Commodore ONE was swamped with new arrivals. Shortly after Joan McCormick transferred to the Starbase and took up the Public Relations Officer's post, this new civilian, Arthur Cline, had returned from his trip to Earth and asked for a job! Being that he had authorization from an unspecified Federation intelligence agency, ONE was obliged to grant Mr. Cline's request. Then came Dr. John Storey, the Starbase's new Chief Medical Officer. (Interesting side note: Dr. Storey came from ONE's old ship, the Black Tulip.)
And now there was Acting Ensign Jere Opet, who was to assist the new CMO. It occurred to ONE that AE Opet had been on the Starbase some time now, and had not yet reported in. Just as he was thinking that, the door chimed. "Enter." ONE looked up to see -- speak of the devil -- AE Opet.
Jere stepped up to ONE's desk, stood at attention, and recited that age old phrase: "Acting Ensign Jere Opet, reporting for duty, sir!"
"At ease, Ensign," ONE said after a moment. "Welcome to the Starbase Conqueror, Mr. Opet, I was just wondering when you were going to come and see me. I take it you have met Dr. Storey, and seen our Sickbay? What do you think of our facilities here?" ONE grinned ever so slightly, knowing that most new officers were very impressed with his starbase.
<AE Opet>
As Jere left his office, ONE noticed someone else waiting outside his office. He didn't recognize her, and she was wearing civilian clothing. "May I help you?" he asked as she lingered just outside his door.
This woman introduced herself as Lucy Kanz, and told her story. ONE pulled up her Starfleet bio, including the classified sections. When he finished reading, he looked her in the eye.
"You'll pardon my bluntness, Ms. Kanz," he said matter-of-factly, "but why are you here and why is this the first I have heard about it?"

Jere was glad to finally have made it to the Commandants office. The wait outside his door seemed long, far too long. A voice on the other side of the door spoke, the doors opening to the command "Enter."
"Acting Ensign Jere Opet, reporting for duty, sir!" He was nervous knowing he had taken too long to report to him and hoped he wouldn't be too upset.
"At ease, Ensign," ONE continued. "Welcome to the Starbase Conqueror, Mr. Opet, I was just wondering when you were going to come and see me. I take it you have met Dr. Storey, and seen our Sickbay? What do you think of our facilities here?"
"Thank you Sir." Jere said, relaxing slightly but not totally in front of the Commadant. "Yes I've seen the facilities and I am impressed. I don't think I'll have any problems finding my way around though."
After a few minutes and more chatting the Commadant dismissed him. Jere left his office, taking a deep breath after the door closed and he was on his way down the corridor back to the turbolift. He felt strange being on his first post and being the assistant CMO already.

I am Leena, Joan's companion. I was sleeping in our shared quarters, when suddenly I awoke with a start. Something felt completely wrong, and when I asked for Joan through our telepathic link, I couldn't find her at all. I have searched for her with my mind, and there is nothing. That can only mean something is very wrong, or I would be able to find her through her own response or by our link. I can't do either, and I went searching for her by foot. I am lost somewhere in the Officer's Offices, and I don't know what to do. Who is this? Help me, please.
John thought, and said to Leena ... "I am Doctor Storey the Chief Medical Officer of this Base. Can you find your way to sickbay? If so come to there, and we will get Security to help to search for her"

Yes, I do believe I can backtrack to the turbolift. I will be there as soon as I can. Leena thinks, and then opens her eyes pushing off the wall heading for the nearest turbolift. This time no one is inside, and she enjoys the silent ride not letting her thoughts about Joan plague her.
She found sickbay a little easier than trying to locate Joan's office. She notices a man in a uniform.
"Hello, are you Doctor Storey? I am Leena." She says quickly not letting anyone yell about a pet being in sickbay.

"Why are you here and why is this the first I have heard about it?"
Lucy shifted her feet from side to side, one of her few nervous habits. "I'm sorry, Sir. I wasn't expecting to be here. I finished work experience with the USS Vesuvius, and decided to travel round for a bit. When I arrived here I didn't expect to stay..."
"... So you never had to report in." ONE finished for her. "However you should have made your presence known to me as soon as you arrived at the Starbase."
"Yes Sir." She paused to think for a moment. "Is it still okay for me to be here? I'm used to being a security issue by now and it doesn't normally make much difference..."

The Starbase Conqueror was a relatively secure facility, but ONE didn't want to take any significant risks if he didn't have to. He stared at the young woman's readout on his personal LCARS display, but didn't really see why she would be a security risk.
"What do you mean exactly by 'security issue'?" he asked, just to clarify. "Please elaborate." As Lucy started her story, ONE motioned for her to sit in one of the very comfortable chairs along the wall (after all, he was the CO). ONE himself folded his arms across his chest and leaned back slightly in his own chair, listening intently to her answer.

Jere stepped into the turbolift and settled against the wall. That hadn't been that bad, he'd lived through reporting in. For some reason that always worried him, like he would be turned away or something.
He left his mind wander over the hours since his arrival and he had to laugh low. Things were sure were interesting. He was silent, partially due to being the only one in the lift and because he was busy mulling over his own thoughts, that when the doors opened onto the medical deck he just stood there for several seconds before stepping from the lift and heading for sickbay.
Jere had work to do and knew the stack of PADDs in his office would not get any smaller if he didn't get on top of them right away.
[Sickbay]
He entered sickbay and looked around, not sensing the CMO anywhere and frowned. Oh well that put him in charge while he was away. That was afterall what he was here for ..... right.
With that thought he made the rounds going from one patient to another and checking their records or with the attending medic before stepping into his office, which sat next to the CMOs larger more spacious one.

"When I got moved back in time, Admiral Martens left instructions on the temporal prime directive for me to read. In my case nothing about changing the future really mattered, especially since there's no chance of me being born again..."
Lucy realised she'd started to babble even more off track than usual. "The main issue would be what people might do if they found out I was from the future. You see, I grew up with a Starfleet that was at war. The advances in weapons were immense. I may only be 17, but I picked up quite a lot of information."
ONE nodded in acknowledgement, "So you're worried that someone will try to get this information out of you. As long as you're sensible enough to keep your cover story straight that should never happen."
"Yes Sir" She lingered for a moment, debating whether to persue a different angle. "Sir, while I'm here, I think I should probably tell you anything you might need to know about me for the safety of this station."
"Go on" the commanding officer said, obviously intrigued.
The Betarite tried to think how to phrase what she was about to say. "It doesn't say this on my file, but my mother used to work testing new systems for the Federation. I used to help them out. I knew my way around all those systems. My job used to be to test encoded areas. They reckoned that if I couldn't hack into them it was probably safe."
She paused for a moment, well aware of the fact that she was talking too much and taking up a lot of the Commodore's time. "The only problem is that now the systems aren't as advanced. If you're computer ever gets locked out then I'm your girl to fix it. But the rest of the time, I could probably access most of your systems..."
Lucy shifted her feet nervously, completely unsure what sort of a reaction she would get. And suddenly she was doubting whether honesty was the best policy.

Jere had been working on the reports for those currently in sickbay as well as past patients, getting them all in order for a while.
He stood and stretched, his stomach growling as he did. He muttered and looked at the console on his desk. Meal time had long since past.
Jere left the PADDS on the edge of his desk after sending a communique to the doctor letting him know they were ready for his signature and stepped from his office.
After a quick walk through sickbay he headed for the turbolift and his quarters.

Commodore ONE looked Ms. Kanz in the eye. Great, he thought, another hacker. It was bad enough to have to deal with Arthur Cline and his stunts, but at least Cline had the security clearance. ONE didn't even know if he could trust this anachronistic girl.
"I'll let you stay on one condition," he finally said. "You will under no circumstances gain or attempt to gain unauthorized access to any computer system on this base, or in this fleet."
Lucy nodded in agreement. "Yes of course." She was relieved, but continued to shift slightly.
"And I want you to come to me directly if you have any additional security 'issues,' agreed?" he said, still looking her in the eye, and waited for a response.
<Lucy>
When she left, he sent a message to Arthur Cline to report to him as soon as possible.

"So, doc, what are we going to do, and where do we start?" Leena says still very much worried about her friend.
"That could work, maybe we should try that. Unfortunately the last place I remember her was in our quarters, so that doesn't work." She says her hopes risen and then dashed. She isn't sure how this doctor can help, but she wonders what Joan could have been doing. She also wonders why Joan hadn't returned to their quarters recently as the computer stated.
"Just out of curiosity, couldn't the computer track her last known where-a-bouts?" Leena says wondering why no one had thought of this before.

"And I want you to come to me directly if you have any additional security 'issues,' agreed?"
Lucy nodded, "Of course, Sir." She decided that the conversation was probably over, and left the office.
Wandering round the starbase again she felt a little more comfortable with herself. At least she knew she was allowed to be there. She considered going back to sickbay to see if she could check in yet, but decided to leave that for another day.
Instead, Lucy went to explore a few areas that she hadn't seen yet. It didn't matter how long it took, she was determined to know her way round the entire starbase.
She came across an open door and decided to look inside.

OFF: Joint post with ONE.
ON:
Art Cline was in his quarters, studying for a big test he had coming up in his remote graduate studies at M.I.T., when he got a message from the starbase commander to see him at his earliest opportunity. Art sighed. What now?... He finished up the chapter he was reading, then decided he needed a break anyway.
-- Academy Commandant's Office --
Art walked into the outer office and up to the door of ONE's inner office. "Hello Debbie," he said as he passed the secretary, though he didn't bother to stop and ask permission to see the Commodore. He rang the bell and went in as soon as the door opened.
"Thank you for coming, Mr. Cline," ONE said as Art sat down. "I'd like you to do me a bit of a favor."
Art raised an eyebrow. He thought he was already doing favors for ONE -- writing holodeck programs, teaching cadets... But he lent an ear anyway.
ONE handed Art a PADD with a bio of Lucy Kanz, the starbase's new arrival. "This young woman has just come to the Conqueror. You can see from her bio there that she is slightly... unique. She is concerned she may be a security risk."
"Mm-hmm," was Art's muffled reply. "And what's this gotta do with me?"
"I'd like you to keep an eye on her," ONE replied. "You are one of the only people on this base that has the security clearance to know about her situation. Plus, you are a civilian and it will be easier for you to stay close to her. Get to know her, befriend her, and make sure she stays out of trouble. Come to me as soon as you suspect something is wrong."
"A'ight," Art said casually, handing the PADD back to ONE. "That it?" Art stood up tentatively.
"That is all. Thank you, Mr. Cline, I will see you later."
