William Ford smiled as, fifteen minutes into the class, two young Cadets ran into the room.
"I'm sorry, sir," said Lorian. "We were talking to some people in the Starbust, and we sort of lost track of time."
"We promise not to do it again," said Matt.
"I suppose I could let you off the hook this time," said William, slowly, "but you'll need to catch up fast. Pick up a PADD and get through section 2.1 and 2.2. Then be prepared to discuss the segments in five minutes. I'm sorry, but I can't hold up the class for only two people. However, I can make sure a certain Navigation Instructor doesn't keep you too long anymore."
"Thank you, sir," said Matt, as he and Lorian took their seats.
In the back of the room, Simon Mann shook his head. He couldn't imagine such irresponsible officers as part of a ship. At least he only had one other class with Lorian Smith, and none others with Matt Reynolds. Finished with the assignment, Simon began simulating the debate in his mind.
(OFF: Since you already brought Lorian in, Matt, I figured I might as well introduce Simon. Besides, I've been slacking in my duties as a science instructor. Any other cadets, feel free to join in.)

"Is this quantum?" said the young cadet walking into the room clutching a PADD and tricorder.
"sorry Im late Im just not sure where everything is just yet "
He surveyed the room looking for an empty desk and decided to dive into the nearest.. front row centre
"Sorry sir .... What chapter??"

Matt was so happy that he wasn't the last cadet to enter the class. When Damion walked in Matt turned to Lorian and both of them smlied.
"sorry Im late Im just not sure where everything is just yet "
He surveyed the room looking for an empty desk and decided to dive into the nearest.. front row centre
"Sorry sir .... What chapter??"
"Section 2.1 and 2.2.," Matt and Lorian said automatically before bursting into a laugh.
"What do you find funny, gentleman?" Ford asked.
"Nothing sir," Matt responded as once again started to read the assignment. Matt found this assignment very boring and his attention started to wain, but luckly for him the five minutes were up. William Ford stood up and asked the class.
"Well..... does anyone have any questions?"

"sir" The cadet damion suddenly relised that no one in the class was keen on him raising his hand at this point....
"The energy E of this basic quantum is directly proportional to the frequency ν of the oscillator, or E = h ν, where h is a constant, now called Planck's constant, having the value 6.63×10 but , thats easy , but what I dont get is how Humans Had this tech and decided to use it to make weapons... it seems like it would be easier to put this technoligy to peacful use than a bomb"
The cadet became very unpopuler. This was going to be a long class.

"In retrospect, you can find faults in almost anything," said William, smiling. "But you need to understand a more... unpleasant side of the human nature. There are plenty of people - and not all are humans - who are greedy, power-hungry, etc. Some do not possess those characteristics, but they might believe that a show of force would keep the peace. An example of this is the slogan 'Peace Through Superior Firepower." Anyone know where that's from?
Simon raised his hand. "I believe a species created an advanced program capable of extensive destruction which backfired on them and wiped out their entire civilization."
William nodded. "That's correct. The Minosians had nicknamed their world the 'Arsenal of Freedom.' The Enterprise-D came accross their uninhabbited world a few years ago."
Another cadet raised his hand. "Sir, what does this have to do with the lesson?"
"Well,' replied William, "for one thing, it is an example of how quantum physics is used in practice outside the lab. But the message I want you to get is this; if all you get from this class, from this Academy, is the stuff in the PADD, you're missing out."
William cleared his throat. "Now, Damion, you had a great idea when you talked about using these principles for peace instead of war. Why don't you - or anyone else who wishes to - comment on the oppritunities for peace presented by what we're studying?"

"Quantum theory holds that probability, not absolutes, rules any physical system. Quantum theory also holds that things can materialize out of the vacuum, although they tend to vanish back into it quickly thisprinciple led to the experimentation with particle physics which led to modern technoligies such as warp drive , medical scans , sheilding and matter transporters, Sir"

"Very good, Damion," commented William. "You are obviously well-acquainted with the information. And you have found a good use for it, as well. Mr. Reynolds, would you mind giving us your ideas on the subject?"
"I have to agree with Damion on almost every account," Matt began," but I don't think that quantum theory made Zephram Cochrone build the Pheonix. Quantum physics is a science that will not be fully understood in our time because the probalities that something can go wrong are very real. If quantum theory could be mastered by the Federation we would use quantum slipstream a long time ago."
"But didn't the USS Voyager travel at slipstream," Commander Ford declared.
"Yes but Voyager could not sustain it, and if they didn't stop traveling at the speed they would be destroyed inside the space-time continuum," Lorian said. Another cadet spoke up and the class came alive.
"I also have to disagree with Damion's assement about the drive behind quantum theory. Yes the study of quantum theory had brought the Federation and other civilization great advancement in science but the only reason science continues to work at it is because they want to control it , and not leave it up to nature. Worse of all is like Damion said about the ablity for this technology to be used as a weapon."
"Are you saying that we should stop trying to find out the secrets of this theory?" Matt asked.
"No it's just that according to all the records we have gathered, which includes the Enterprise and Voyager logs every civilization that has mastered quantum has ended up dead," the cadet responded
"Touch'e, " Commander Ford said.

"Touch'e, " Commander Ford said. "However, you should amend that statement to - 'every civilization we know of has either destroyed itself or achieved a state beyond that of corporal existence." You see, that's not the only reason for their destruction. I wouldn't consider that a valid argument. However, to each his own."
Damion spoke up. "And when I said warp drive, I didn't necessarily mean Cochrane. I meant warp drive in general."
"A good defense," noted Simon from the back of the room.

"I have to agree with you there Damion, the Federation is all about exploration, but sometimes our curiosity can lead us to far," Matt said.
"Yes of course," Commander Ford said. Matt still felt bad for the cadet who said that complete mastery of quantum theory would lead to destruction, since Commander Ford and the rest of the class didn't find the argument valid. Neither did Matt, but you know you can still feel bad for someone.
The same cadet who said that quantum theory would lead to destruction raised his hand once again.
"Yes cadet," Commander Ford said.
"How would Star Fleet or the Federation be able to insure that this science didn't fall into the wrong hands, when other powers in the alpha quandrant are trying to do the same thing?" the cadet asked.

Realizing she has no idea in any science above high school, she enters the class very late, and sees everyone looking at her.
"Is there someing I can do for you, Lietenant?" Ford says looking over at her.
"I thought it would be a good idea to join your class. I may be a Lieutenant, but I have no idea on any science above high school level. I can catch up in need be. Unless you don't want any non cadets in here?" She says hoping she isn't booted.

Fenel slipped into the class and headed toward a desk on the right side of the classroom near the back. Thinking she was safe she let out a sigh of relief and sat down.
"Another late student, you people need to set your alarms earlier." Commander Ford Commented.
"Sorry Commander, My ship just docked less then an hour ago." Fenel apologised as she grabbed a PADD from her bag and looked over at the student beside her. 2.1 and 2.2, I missed all of 1! she hated catching up.
"Cadet.. Yevar, what is your opinion. How should Star Fleet prevent Science from falling into the wrong hands?" The Commander asked.
Fenel searched her brains for a good answer and thought she'd found one. "Well for one thing we have the prime directive, which helps insure we know the species we are handing the information to. We also take steps to only trade with species who have shown themselves to be responsible. I supose we could take further steps to make out technology difficult to adapt and therefore difficult to "steal"." Fenel did not expect to have these kinds fo discussions in class, these where the types of things she rememberd talking about around the family dinner table.

Glad that He was infact not the last person in the room Damion was content to lean back and listen to Fenel talk .. and as he sat there he relised that the bolian was a very attractive young women..
"I agree" he said half a second before his chair reached maximum lean and dissapeared below him... Hitting the floor with a thud he looked up to see two cadets laughing at him ...

Matt automatically got up and went to help Damion from the floor and gave the two cadets who laughed a look of extreme loathing which shut them up real quick.
"Damion are you okay?" Matt asked.
"Yeah, I guess, but my ego took a huge hit," Damion smiled weakly. Matt just helped him up and told him to go sit with him and Lorian.

Fenel was startled at her fellow cadet's fall, and found herself giggling at his predicament. She had seen many students make the same mistake, and wonderd when having a pair of feet on the back of the chair would become mandatory. Matt's angry glare cut her giggling and she went back to the section on her PADD. She was relieved to see that Damion was okay, although he could probably look forward to a nice bruise the next morning.
"Now that we've all been entertained, would anyone care to summerize the reading I assigned yesterday?" Commander Ford asked.

Joan heard the thud and looked up to see damion on the floor, and guessed what had happened. She shook her head chuckling softly to herself, and made sure no one noticed she was chuckling. Several noticed her shaking her head, and she wondered what they were thinking. She turns back to her padd as well trying to catch up on the reading assignment. She hears the question asked by Ford, but decides to keep quiet, as she has no idea what was read yesterday. Before he can get his answer, he is called away from class to an emergency of some sort. Since the cadets now don't have their instructor, Joan gets up and head to the front of the class.
"I think it best if you answer his last question. I also want to know what the reading assignment was." She says looking for someone who will answer. It doesn't take long for the answer to come, and then she decides on something, and tries to hide a cringe as she will also have to do this. "I want you all to sum up what you think science is really. I want it in paper due tomorrow. It should be six or seven paragraphs long, and that is the minum." Joan says quickly, then leans up against the desk to start her writting assignment.

The class as one person gave a moan of disapproval. Matt had known Joan to be a prankster but this was just wrong.
"Well lets just get started," Matt said as he started writing onto the PADD.

It doesn't take her too long before she has part of her paper written. She looks around the class to see who is actaully doing the project. She still has a couple paragraphs to write. So far she has:
There are several reasons I love science. What is science? Why do we need it? How does it affect others?
What is science? Well, I find science to be a wonderful explination for what goes on in the universe. Everything is made up of atoms and they can be used to help create or destroy something.
Why do we need it? Well we can't really get rid of it, and besides it surrounds us. Science is a part of everything, from medicine to flying a shuttle. We have science in just walking.
How does it affect others? Well, back a little while ago, Einstein created the atom bomb which destroyed a nation, who was against a people who did nothing to them. Just recently a bomb, in the form of a missle, heading straight to a solar systems sun. With science, we were able to stop it.

Damion wasnt sure about what to put about science .. but after a few mins came up with what to start with and then just followed it through ....
Science permeates our lives and informs our actions. Physics, for example, teaches us how mirrors work, how glasses can aid one's vision and how heat is treated by various household materials (plates and utensils). Chemistry discusses the principles of matter, like atoms, molecules and compounds. It discusses the countless different substances that can arise from the minutest variations within compounds. These atoms, molecules and compounds make up the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the medicines we take when we are sick. Some we can't possibly live without.
Biology, the study of life, teaches us why we are the way we are, why we need what we need to survive, how all living things are categorized, when we all came from. These, and countless other questions and answers are all related to science.
Going deeper into the concept of science and it's importance, you can understand why it is essential for Star Fleet to have a clear idea how will students are doing in this subject area. Why? Students are the future of Star Fleet.
There have been so many tremendous advances in technology over the last decade or so, in fact the pace is accelerating. Everyday new things are discovered and with the increase in scientific knowledge, a future for us is looking better , thanks to Science.
There is another important aspect of science that I have saved for last. Science is fun. Fun in many ways. Learning is always fun but it's especially rewarding when it has something to do with the things going on around you. There is a satisfaction that comes from learning about these often complex matters that goes far beyond merely getting a good grade. It helps you to understand the world around you and to appreciate it's complexities. It teaches you that we can't possibly understand everything about the world ever, but we go on trying anyway, engaging in the never- ending search for truths... and why? We do this because science is fun and exciting. The more we learn, the more we want to learn, the more we feel ourselves pushed towards the answers and towards further questions, towards the future...
He got up , before anyone else , And left his report on the Desk

Fenel though for a few minutes before organising her ideas. She jotted them down on her PADD before beginning the paper. Writing was one of her strong points and she was anxiouse to show off her skills in something. The paper took her a little over half and hour. Once finished she re read it to check for any spelling errors, spelling was not her strong point.
Science is discovery and understanding which is why it is so important. How can we live when we do not understand the world around us? How do we understand unless we take it upon ourselves to explore and discover?
Science has led our ancestors to comprehend the night skies, later to map the stars and eventually explore them first hand. Science is what has allowed us to cure life threatening diseases, improve food and water supplies and protect ourselves from the dangers of the universe. We owe science a great deal.
To some research is simply a necessary step toward a goal; trial and error must be untaken before an answer can be found. However research is the backbone behind the field of science. In the past important breakthroughs have been discovered through the research of something completely different. To quote the Terran Inventor Thomas Edison “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Every step in science is a step forward not backwards.
English dictionaries define science as “The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.” Or, in a version I prefer “Knowledge especially that gained through experience.” Experience is something many of us at the academy have not gained, it is a goal, science is a goal.
Some would say that being the CScO on a starship is one of the most boring positions, but it shouldn’t be. Who would pass up the chance to discover new phenomenon? Explore the bounds of physics or discover how other species have learned to understand their worlds? To be the CScO on a Starfleet ship is a privilege, a gift that should be treated as such.
The paper was only 5 paragraphs and she hopped that would suffice. She seemed to be a little off topic near the end, but her strong points had all been used up near the beginning. Tempted to re wright it she realised it was a good paper, and if she'd been back on Bolarius IX she would have handed it in without a secound thought. Gathering up her things she slipped them into her Bag and left the PADD on Commander Ford's desk before leaving for her quarters, or maybe the promenade, she had not really decided.

She notices two cadets have already finished. Joan writes the rest of her paper, and then sits down again at her desk looking over a few things she brought with her. She was glad she always carried a padd or two around with her as she will never know when she will need them. She watches the rest of the students writing, and smiles a little.
OOC: Yes Matt, I know I am the prankster, but that is not why this paper was assigned. I would never ask anything of a cadet that I wouldn't do myself. Fenel, good reply... don't worry about the last two paragraphs... it was good without them.

OFF: How odd... it seems I am shown as being logged in, but I'm not. Anyway, thanks for covering me, Joan. ON: William hurried out of the room, with the hope that the class was civil enough and mature enough not to dismiss itself or wreck havoc. Soon he was at the docking area, where he had been summoned. A small, Venture-class ship, had been damaged while on a mission. The Venture-class ship had hit one of the walls of the docking bay as it came in. Luckily, it wasn't traveling too quickly, and it didn't bounce very much after it impacted with the wall. It was obvious the pilot was not the best in the Federation, but when he looked at the ship, William couldn't blame him. In addition, the official pilot of the ship might have been injured. Based on the fact that three medical officers were climbing into a shuttlecraft to board the ship, William could see why that theory could prove true. William hopped into the shuttlecraft with the three medical staff and two security guards. "Commander Ford, we've been given orders not to leave the ship until I am certain that there are no sorts of viruses, bacteria, or other dangerous medical issues on board the ship," said the highest-ranking medical officer. "The transmission we received from the USS Gregorian was garbled, and no visual transmission was available. We suspect their communications were damaged in some sort of battle or collision," said on of the security guards. He handed William a phaser. William nodded. "Keep your phasers on stun, and try not to shoot anything. The Gregorian looks like it will fall apart with another phaser blast." "Aye, sir." The shuttle docked with the Gregorian and the team hurried inside. "This is Commander Ford, of Starbase Conquerer!" William shouted as loud as he could. The ship was extremely small, so William was almost completely sure everyone on board could hear him. "If you are inured, stay where you are! Everyone else, please come to airlock B!" The ship was so small it had only three airlocks, William recalled. He wouldn't have liked to be assigned to such a small ship. Three people ran towards Commander Ford and the others. Several of them had minor injuries. "The CMO is in Sickbay, attending to Commander Wiles and the others," said one, breathing heavily. "Our Chief Engineer is in Sickbay, too, along with most of the others. I'm the Science Officer." "And you Ops, Security and Navigation officers?" asked William. "Where are they?" "Its such a small ship, sir." said the science officer. "Ops and Security are rolled into one. She's on the bridge still. Protocol. We've got only three engineers, a medical officer, a Captain, myself, the navigations officer - he's in sickbay, too - and two security guards." William shook his head. "I don't know why this type of ship was ever approved," he muttered. "What happened?" he asked. "Got into a little trouble with the... well, I can't pronounce their name. But they have only six or seven ships with warp capability. Apparently, we entered their space. Its the Federation's, technically, so we'll enter an official report of the whole thing once we recover. Not fatalities...yet. We were forced to destroy two of their vessels - which are about our size, but with no shields - before we got away." The medical officers William had brought along had left. One returned. "I've left the others to lend a hand in Sickbay. There are no medical issues as far as viruses and the sort go, so its safe to head directly back to the Starbase." William smiled. "First good news I've head. Mr...?" "Redbay, sir," said the science officer. "Mr. Redbay, there is a shipyards close by. Omicron. I'll have the Gregorian tugged over there and repaired. In the meantime, we'll find you and your crewmates some quarters." "Thank you," said Redbay. An hour later, the mess had finally been cleared up. everyone who had been injured would pull through. Redbay filled the official report, since the CO was still recovering, and William returned to the classroom. He passed several students from the class on his way back to the classroom, but they were all talking excitedly about what they were going to do later, or rushing off to their next class. Joan was about to leave when William entered the room. It took him about five seconds to realise what had happened. He smiled. "Thank you, Lieutenant." Joan smiled back. "No problem. I had us all turn in a short essay on what we had discussed. I hope that was the right thing to do." "Perfect," said William. "I'm glad you were able to take charge after I left." (TAG: Joan) OFF: Good job, everyone! If anyone feels inclined, I'd be perfectly happy holding another class 'tomorrow.'
