Joan had heard the news, and chuckled. She couldn't believe her ears and shook her head. She realized what needed done, and she was about to get to the tasks when in walked the new AC himself. She almost choked on her hot chocolate.
Joan was sitting behind his desk with her feet proped up as she read some of the reports coming in. She looked like a chicken who needed to run for its life before being slaughtered for the grille. She put her feet off his desk, and stood at attention. Once allowed she moved from attention and from behind his desk.
"I had heard we would be getting a new bossman, I just didn't realize you would be here already. I will vacate your office immediately," she said and started to gather her stuff.
Hours later, Joan looked around and was pleased with the decorations and the people who had shown up. She had sent a message for Admiral Drew to come as quickly as he could. Joan was positioned like all the rest of those who showed, and waited for the admiral to come in and flick the lights on.
When he did she shouted surprise just like the rest. She smiled and wandered around a little making sure things were going smoothly as she tried to have a good time.

S'reena never was the woman to say no whenever a surprise party would be involved. In fact she was notorious when it came to organizing them herself. People on Conqueror still vividly remembered the surprise party she'd organized when Tony Marcell was promoted to captain. The part-Klingon captain was so overwhelmed by it all that he had fainted on the spot several times. Then there was of course the promotion of Paul Drew to Vice Admiral; the poor man nearly had a stroke when he thought he was being kidnapped.
The Romulan chuckled at the memory as she hid behind the couch in the Academy Commandant's office. Joan had requested all base staff, including the senior staff of the USS Hanson, to report to the AC's office, and be extremely quiet until she said otherwise. She blinked when suddenly the office went dark and completely silent.
"Computer, lights," sounded Drew's voice as he entered the dark office, quite possibly surprised at finding it dark and empty.
At that command, the lights sprang on, and everyone jumped from their hiding places, yelling 'surprise' all at once. S'reena watched Drew jump back, startled and pale. "Aw now," she chuckled as she moved to guide him to his seat, "surely you could've expected something like this, now that you've been promoted yet again?"

"No, it wasn't my doing this time," S'reena said, somewhat more defensively than intended, "it's all her doing." She pointed squarely at Joan, "though I must say she's almost equaled my surprise back when you were promoted to admiral."

Freshly dressed in her formal uniform and well scrubbed after some time on the hydroponics lab with Konal, Brelev arrived at the surprise party just before the lights went out and the room echoed with "shhhh"s and "he'll here you"s.
She found the initial cramptness of the office unnerving at first, finding herself squished against the others, but had relaxed by the time the Admiral entered. Leaping up to shout like the others she felt her nerves once more, but told herself that if she was to live among humans she really needed to learn to relax when inadvertently contact wad made. Perhaps she should speak to Sarek, but that would come later right now there was more important business.
"This new job of your better not keep you from us Admiral." She warned. "Last time you left we got stuck with a very miserable Vulcan and landed ourselves in a klingon prison, surely you have not forgotten?"

Worn out, Paul Drew slumped into the biggest chair in his quarters, and unzipping his uniform jacket leaned back comfortably. Since returning to Conqueror and being named the new Commandant, it had seemed like he had yet to have time to sit down properly and relax. He had been great with reports and transfer requests almost as soon as he had walked onto the base, and then there had been the constant flow of people wishing to congratulate him. One or two officers had even decided to give him a lecture of areas they would like to see developed in the Academy program.
Still, the day had it’s amusements as well. He did not think he would ever forget the look of horror on Joan McCormick’s face when he walked into his new office to find her with her feet up on the table. He allowed himself a small chuckle at the memory; it would be a story worthy of repeating at staff parties.
Just as he was trying to decide what to have for supper, his comm badge chirped for what seemed like the thousandth time that day.
“Drew here, go ahead,” he said wirily, picking up the small device.
“Admiral,” came Joan McCormick’s voice, “please could you meet me in your office.”
“Of course Joan,” Drew replied, “I’ll be right there.”
Closing the channel, Drew let out a small sigh as he pushed himself back to his feet and straightened his uniform. Deciding he would have to wait a while before getting anything to eat now, he took one last look at himself in the holo-mirror and then left his quarters for his office.
Walking out into Ops, Drew pasted several crewmembers whose names he had yet to learn. He nodded politely to them all, and then pressed the control to open his office. He was surprised to find the room in darkness, from Joan’s message he had got the impression she would already be here waiting for him.
“Computer, lights,” he said calmly, then jumped back in shock as beaming faces jumped out all around, yelling “SURPRISE!”
“S’reena!” Drew yelled as he saw his First Officer near the front of the group, “what have I told you about surprise parties? Are you trying to kill me?”
As S’reena protested her innocent, and explained whose idea it really was, Drew noticed the guilty look on Joan McCormick’s face. He decided there and then that his new XO would be just as bad as his current one.
“Thank you Joan for the party,” Drew said, pulling her to one side, “it was certainly a shock, but it means a lot to me.”
“Admiral!” Brelev called out, walking over to them, “this new job better not keep you from us Admiral, last time you left we got stuck with a miserable Vulcan and landed ourselves in a Klingon prison, surely you have not forgotten?”
“Now Doctor, that is no way to talk of Captain T’lana,” Drew replied with a smile, “she is in more than enough trouble already; I suspect she will face a court martial for the loss of the ship.”
Judging by Brelev’s reaction, the Doctor didn’t feel any kind of sympathy for T’lana. Drew could not blame her; he was pretty annoyed with the Captain himself.
“So Joan,” Drew said, turning the subject back onto pleasant things, “where is the food? I am starving.”

Slipping in shortly after Brelev, Konal felt a little awkward. After all, she had never met Admiral Drew. Hopefully he was more tolerant than T'lana was with the instructors, but in case he wasn't, Konal would be able to adjust. Noting that a party was being held in his honor, he was likely a well-liked CO.
"Suprise" was yelled, and Konal joined in, putting no effort to exert any excitement in her voice. She was still really disturbed about her meeting with Shraka, however the Cardassian woman had no problem hiding her fears and worries. Konal went about mingling with the other crew members she had already met.

Joan was happy with the turn out and how they surprised the admiral. She had heard rumors that he wasn't one for surprise parties, but she thought that was exactly what they were. She realized S'reena just handed her the credit and she wondered what was wrong with doing that since she had. Joan didn't say anything though, and smiled.
"Brelev, do you really think I wouldn't let him have fun and hold down the fort while he is away? I thought you knew me better than that," she said teasing the other woman a little.
"Konal, it is good to see you are around. Are you liking the party?" she asked.
Only after Konal had answered did Drew look back to Joan for some food.
"Men, honestly, you put something in front of their face and they never find it. Food is right over there on the tables," she said chuckling a little. Joan knew she was in for an earful from either Drew, her mom, or both on that one. She didn't care though, and hoped to get to know the admiral a little better than what she did.

After the traumatic events he experienced while attempting to overcome S’reena’s fear of water, Salek managed to stop by his quarters before going to this "surprise party" that was being held to celebrate his return. These illogical species never ceased to surprise him. They took every chance they could to throw a party and stuff themselves with food and drink. But he was never one to avoid a chance to observe their interaction during these events so he decided to attend. After all this way he could have a private word with Brelev.
When he finally arrived to the party, the food was already on the tables and glasses were being refilled. He noticed Drew right away and made way to him.
"Admiral", Salek began, "I understand Starfleet command finally awarded you with the position you deserve", he said, "Congratulations", he said

After finishing his convo with Drew, Salek made way to Dr. Brelev.
"Doctor", he said, "I would like to have a private word with you"
<Tag Brelev>
"I am certain you are aware that S'reena has been wanting to solve her problem of being afraid of water. Therefore in the light of that i held a session with her earlier and slowly we have made some small progress. However she will need much more time in order to overcome this fear altogether", Salek said

Brelev nodded. "I understand Counselor, however I think it is imperative that she continues to try. Water is present on many worlds and she cannot avoid it forever. Is there anything I can do to assist you?"
<Tag Salek>
"Alright. I'll look into another fitness regiment for her then, something she can begin immediately." Brelev decided as she looked over at the Romulan First officer. She could hardly critique S'reena's fear of water, she had her own irrational fears. Of course, when she brushed against someone she did not exactly run away in fear...
"Something bothering you doctor?" Salek asked. He seemed very talented at knowing when his services might be required.
"I was justing comparing my own fear of touch to hers of water." Brelev replied. "I like crowds, but I get antsy when other's brush against me."
"That's a common fear among your species correct?"
"Well, I have yet to meet a Denobulan who rushes around hugging everyone in sight." Brelev smiled.

"I'm doing well. Yourself?"
Joan was always rather perky, which Konal had learned to find engaging, if not enjoyable. Before Joan could reply, Admiral Drew came over, asking about food. After finding his food, Konal introduced herself
"Hello Admiral." Konal smiled politely. "I am Lieutenant Manto. Konal Manto. I am the new Chief Science Officer aboard the Hanson... which I hear didn't fair too well."

"Perhaps you should suggest an alternate exercise schedule for her. Although the swimming schedule motivated her to attempt and solve her fear of water... it will be some time before she will be able to enact it therefore the logical answer is to suggest another program", he said
After Brelev expressed her reply to his suggestion, he noticed she had something else on her mind as humans say. It appeared Brelev wanted to resolve her natural instinct to avoid close contact with people.
"This is a natural instinct doctor", Salek said, "However i just may have something that might be helpful. I am sure you are not aware of this yet but I am getting a transfer and am going to be taking over the CMO position therefore i would advise that you use this fear of close contact to establish a connection with S'reena and her fear of water. I trust that the two of you could help each other with your fears, even if it does not look like you might at first."

The Admiral acknowledged Konal. The conversation seemed to go by quickly as the festivities around heated up, and everyone was bidding for some of the Admiral's time.
"I'm sure we'll have more of a chance to talk when we are back on the Hanson. It was nice meeting you." He acknowledged, and was immediately swooped into someone else's direct line of questioning.
Konal made her way over to Commander Brelev. "Thank you for inviting me here... but the food is not doing it for me, and my stomach is starting to feel upset. I think I am going to go have some tea on the promenade... and I cannot stand this dress uniform!" Brelev gave a smirk, which Konal registered as empathy, and dismissed herself.
