Welcome to the English Academy. This is the place to improve your English. It is completely on a voluntary basis. There are no obligations.
If you are unsure about a grammatical form or a spelling form or a word etc. you can post a question here.
If you want tips on how to improve your grammar, you can post a question here.
Another possibility is that you make a copy of your mission post and post it here as well. I will then look over it and correct the grammar and spelling where necessary.
I won't be childish about the differences between British English and American English or any other form of English. If something is correct English (whether British, American, Australian or whatever other form of English) I won't correct it. If I do correct something because it is wrong, I will often prefer to state the correct British English form, but that does not always mean that that is the only correct alternative. Where necessary, I will indicate a correct American English alternative as well, to give you the choice between the two forms.
This thread is designed for people who want help with their English. If you post here, you agree to get feedback on grammar and spelling. If you don't want people looking at your English with the purpose of correcting it, you shouldn't post on this thread.

While Danny is the English student here....I'm also available to be helping out on correcting posts.
I've lived in Germany for 7 years with Sky and TCC the only non german channels for the first 3 years I lived there (of course non subtitled!) and I've also lived in Australia for a year.
I too prefer to write british english (though I'm told I do use american writing on some occasions..which are usually issues on using s or z in a word....)

Since this is a thread about proper grammar, I figure all posts made here are open targets for grammar correction. Ergo, S'reena's previous post shall now be parsed for proper English grammar... The following is a grammatically correct version of said post (I also corrected a stylistic error or two):

I am, and shall always remain, a foreigner But thank you ONE for pointing it out;) Though, in overall, I think the average dutchman still spells better English than Dutch (ironically). (I said average, I didn't exactly include myself as when I am writing in either language I usually take great care to spell correctly...but even Word doesn't see every typo or misspelled word....I am still human after all)

Thank you, Captain Jira, for that stylistic edit; I do point out, however, that the passive voice is, in fact, quite valid.

It is correct, depending on the circumstances. If you are writing formal English, then it is not correct, if you are merely writing correct English, it is acceptable.

I think all of you are having more fun laughing at this than actually doing anything.
Btw Jira, it's "apparently". At least where I'm from it is. What you could have is the European version of the word but who knows?

This is great. Correct spelling and grammar is one of my pet peaves too.
With that in mind, I wanted to give a piece of advice that may help those who are grammatically challenged, or do not use English as their first language.
I, myself, actually do the following for about 90% of my posts; I open up a blank word document to write my story in. I either use Microsoft Word or Works, depending what PC I'm using. I stay away from the regular notepad or wordpad. When I am done, I go to [Tools] and use the [Spelling and Grammar] function. It helps tremendously. Then I [Cut] and [Paste] my story here onto the storyboards.
Notice: You will find that those word documents actually want you to write star base and shuttle bay seperate, instead of starbase and shuttlebay together. I, personally, don't care about that as the spelling is still correct.
Hope this helps.

Actually, that happens to be my pig word. I never manage to get the damn thing right. neither do I....'cause it sounds like apparantly....I never seem to get such words right, like possebility (possibility?)...among a few. (though..I got an excuse:p) But still, for people who are unsure of their writing, this is a great idea.....and if they don't want to have it known they;re bad spellers, they could also paste the post in an IM to whoever voluneered on this thread to look them over.....(right?)

This is something that always bugs me. Not everyone speaks English as their first language so therefor, do not always know how to spell something. One should not be critized simply cause the can't spell the greatest. Atleast, that is my opinion. Plus this is a startrek forum not an english/grammer forum.

One should not be critized simply cause the can't spell the greatest. Atleast, that is my opinion. Plus this is a startrek forum not an english/grammer forum. That's why I specifically included the idea that it was completely voluntarily. No-one blames anyone for mistakes in spelling or grammar. Indeed, we know that not everybody has English as his/her first language and that's okay. Yet, if there are people who want to improve their English, they can do so here. If people do not want to improve their English, they don't have to submit their posts for review on this thread. This thread (as stated in the opening post) is specifically for people who have decided voluntarily that they want to be criticised.
If you don't post on this thread, you will not be criticised. No-one will blame you for not posting on this thread. And yes, you're right, this is a Star Trek forum, but it's also a forum where people can help each other with anything people want. If we want to establish a thread where people can seek help on a voluntary basis, I think that is our good right. You have of course every right to disagree with the idea, but I'm not planning on debating the validity of the "English Academy" thread. It's there, people like it, it's not offensive, everyone has stated that it is on a completely voluntary basis and everyone has stated that not participating in this thread will not be held against someone, so I really don't see the problem.
Please reserve this thread for on-topic posts (consructive posts, posts for review or questions about grammar or spelling).

I agree with O'Connor too.
Plus if someone doesn't want people to know s/he's a bad speller...it can be send to the person privately and it will be dealt with confidentially.
Indeed not everyone is a great speller...but proper spelling and grammar does improve on the readability of posts. If I can't read a post because of grammar and spelling errors...how am I to properly respond to it...and how will the author feel if s/he's constantly misunderstood because s/he cannot get a message across?
It's very frustrating.

I just wanted to offer my help to anyone with a question on grammar. I am a Technical Writer for a USA based company that manufactures industrial computer equipment. I work in the Training and Documentation department. I am not saying that I know everything; in fact, I still learn new stuff everyday and make many mistakes too. However, I am willing to help; and if I cannot help you, … my Wife is a teacher here in the States and English was one of her studies. I am sure she could help. (This is just a side note) … my company is looking for a Software and Computer hardware trainer in Germany (they would need to speak at least German and English; both very well … any other languages would be a plus. Please send me a personal message and I will let you know who to get in contact with.)( The job would be in Konstanz, Germany but would also need to be able to travel about 25%) If posting jobs is not allowed … please tell me and it will not happen again. It probably isn't unless approved by SA Duke Nova...

is it alright if i join the class? By all means though it's not a class per sé If you're not sure about spelling, or if you wish to have your post looked over for grammar, this is the place to ask questions. If you prefer not to post it publicly, feel free to contact anyone who, on this thread, has offered to assist.

i know nothing about grammer an english but i can handle spelling on some counts unless i never came across the word before. That's quite all right. We have so many non-english natives on this site, there are bound to be english grammar mistakes If you're not sure on how to spell something, or if something isn't a proper place do not hesitate to ask. Though I'd really say: don't worry about it too much. There are also so many posting styles, errors in spelling are easily missed. Just have fun writing..the rest'll come later

A simple tip for learning how to place punctuation is to look at other people's posts closely. Note where capitals appear and where commas and full stops are used. Mainly worry about capitals and full stops and how to use them. If you are from a language that uses paragraphs then use those where you would normally since it probably won't make much difference. But don't copy how I type off character posts, those are written in my own style, not in the normal way.
