Cyle pushed various buttons looking at the readings on his station. Almost immediately his console beeped, and he spoke up "Sir, we are being boarded. Borg on Deck 12, Section 19."
"Have the closest marines and security teams converge on their position. Status on the shuttle, anyone!"
" Charlie Team, deck 12, section 19, move out. Nick, you may want to put a couple more guys in front of the counselor"
Cyle looked back at his console and he continued to check the progress.
~~~~~
Charlie Team arrived just as the Borg began moving to wards Engineering. Setting up a small blockade, they fired their rifles and dropped the front most. A couple drones appeared behind them and engaged them, inflicting one with nanodrones, turning him slowly to wards the Borg side, another crew member fired instantly, then fought with the Borg hand to hand, suffering a leg injury when another crew member landed behind him, knocked unconscious. "Get him to sick bay, now" the leader called out as the few remaining drones were taken down.
The OPS seat was good to see again ... it have been a while since Jamey had been in it working on the problems at hand. His read-outs showed that everything, so far, was working according to the plan. The shuttle rounded the aft of the ship and turned to head toward the rift. The computer was doing a good job simulating a human pilot and even the Nevada's sensors showed that both Grace and the Admiral was on-board ... giving the allusion everyone was wishing.
The Borg boarding the ship was a bit strange. Everyone knew it was a possibility but still ... why were they here ... was the Borg already on to them? No one had time to contemplate that thought ... a task was at hand ... it was time to lay the cards on the table.
The shuttle entered the rift, "Shuttle is now entering the rift and the shuttle's computers have full control ... we will no longer be able to control it due to the interference of the rift," Jamey told the bridge crew. Jamey's sensors showed that the large Borg Cube started to move toward the rift ... checking his read-out again .. he said, "The Borg Cube is following the shuttle .. its flight path will carry it to the exact place the shuttle entered."
So ... what was the Borg boarding team doing on the Nevada? Why would they send the few Borg they had on the Cube to the Nevada if they believed the people they wanted was on the shuttle? Jamey guessed that the Borg was covering both possibilities.
Seeing that no-one on the Nevada could control the shuttle ... it was up to it to carry out its programing ... Jamey then turned his attention to the power systems on deck 12. Section 19's power grid was working normally. Jamey had an idea.
Talking to Colonel, "sir ... setting up a force field around section 19 will not hold them off for long ... however modulating all fields at each corridor crossing, independtantly, will keep them guessing. However, I believe if we increase the power to that section the resulting energy radiation will not allow the Borg to analyze the field modulations and could possibly interfere with there implants," turning toward the Colonel Jamey said, "they work not only with bio-parts but also with power ... but spoiled milk ... power in this case Sir, isn't a good thing for them."
The Colonel shook his head and Jamey took the cue and isolated section 19 from the rest of the deck and started to erect the force fields and raise the power supply to section 19's EPS conduits; taking the regulators off-line also helped in raising the electro interference in the area.
<tag anyone on bridge ... and tag anyone observing the Borg boarding party>
Grace and mc7 didn't know if the drones were still on the Nevada or if the Cube was following the shuttle.
Mc7 was attempting to break the connection with Grace but she was stronger than she looked. "Grace, I think I should go to the bridge and check on the status of the shuttle. Please release me."
"I'm afraid I can't do that mc7. Breaking the connection could endanger the rest of the crew. If the Borg is following the shuttle, then keeping the connection will ensure they continue into the rift. If more drones had come on board we would hear it over the comm system. We must remain where we are at least until we hear otherwise."
"I am the Commanding officer, my place is on the bridge."
"With all due respect, Admiral, you are a Star Fleet Admiral. Your place is where you will do the most good, which right now is here with me masking our biosignatures in order for the plan to work."
"I don't know how you can remain so calm in the face of the danger that could be outside that door"
"Because I have faith in my fellow crewmembers to do their jobs they were trained to do. They are a great crew."
"Grace, I think that's why the crew trusts you. You care for them and they know it. That's why the crew has trust in Commander Jira, he has faith in their abilities. Don't take this wrong, but I have been made to feel welcome on the Nevada, but the crew has more loyalty to Harrias than to me and that is as it should be. He was their Captain."
"They're a good crew, mc7. They are friendly, but they don't trust easily. You have to prove yourself to them. They will follow who ever is in Command but they will question any decision if it doesn't seem to be a sound decision."
"I noticed that right away. I had a couple question me at first but they asked questions, I answered and they seemed to be satisfied with my answers. And you are right Grace, we shall remain here until we hear otherwise."
Zhukarak really didn't care for the chair. He was still used to being a hands on type of guy. Sitting here in the chair, he felt like he wasn't doing anything but observing.
"The Borg Cube is following the shuttle into the rift, sir." Was the report from LtCmndr Parker.
"The Borg boarding party has demateriallized. They've apparently gone back to the Cube." Cyle yelled out with happy excitement.
"Good. The plan seems to be working. Looks like they were planning on boarding us, before they noticed the biosignatures on the shuttle. Commander Thelev, put some distance between us and that Cube. I don't want to be too close when they do enter that rift. Captain Jira, what's the status of the shuttle?"
It felt weird asking his captain for a report, but the current situation warranted it.
"The biosignatures are holding up....100 km from the rift...70 km...50...25...10...the shuttle is through. the Cube is following...30km........" Captain Jira continued looking at his sensors while everyone else on the bridge was looking at the main viewscreen. The cube could be seen as a small spot in the center of the scrren, then a bright light appeared before Caotain Jira made his announcemnet. "The Borg have entered the rift. We are clear of the Borg."
A moment of jubilation spread across the bridge as everyone cheered and yelled their hurrays. Zhuk was relieved that they had gotten the shuttle out at just the right moment. He didn't know what kind of casualties the small boarding party had caused. It was time to find out, but first he had to let Grace know that the coast was clear.
"Cancel red Alert....Counselor Mitchel, Admiral Mc7_of_9, we are clear of the Borg. It is safe for you to release your personal shielding. Report back to the bridge." After her acknowledgement, he needed to find out the casualties. "Doctor Lorre, we are clear of the Borg. Report please."
OOC: Let's go home...
As soon as Melain had finished the necessary treatments for the unconsouse security officer the doors to sickbay slid open again. Melain trusted Rachael to preform the triage, but had time to glance over and diagnose the victims herself. Broken ribs, Marine's got a burnt face and left side.... Damn the Bolian patient's pale skin with protruding veins was sure sign of a nanoprobe injection. No triage three: to far gone to even try and patch them up.
"Keep him stabalized Nurse Cutler." Melain orderd one of the newer nurses as she headed over to where Rachel had guided the burned crewmember and the one battling nanoprobes. "Tom take the Marine, I'll take the Bolian."
Melain pulled up the crewmember med file, no allergies, good. She drew up a strong immune booster in a hypospray and gave him the injection. Idealy the nanoprobes would be expelled before doing any damage... idealy.
It seemed that all at once Sickbay was quiet and it took Melain a moment to notice that the red alert Klaxon had ceased. Melain's commbadge beeped triumphantly
=A=Doctor Lorre, we are clear of the Borg. Report please.=A=
Sickbay, both the staff and patients drew a collective sigh of relief. It had not been as bad as they had thought, in a way all their nervouse preperation seemed at that point foolish and paranoid.
=A=We have six patients at present. Three are expected to make a full recovery with relativly minor injuries. One Marine will require extensive reconsructive surgery but I expect he will be ready for duty within a week or so...=A=
=A=and the other two docter?=A= Zhukarak cut her off, Melain realised how insensitive it was for her to leave the worst for last.
=A=One tactical officer has extensive injuries to his torso and back of the head. He's stable now and if things continue to go as well as they have he'll pull through. However at the moment I doubt he'll ever be able to go back to active duty. The other has had a large dose of nanoprobes, I'm hoping that with some help his immune system will fight them off, otherwise I'm going to have to refer him to a specialist=A=
No deaths.. so far. There would still be some injured crewmembers coming in, mostly with minor injuries. Or those with something more seriose who had been overlooked. Melain was most concerned about crewman West.
It seemed everything was over just as fast as it had started: the shuttle took off, the Borg boarded them, both Cyle and Nick staid on the bridge to coordinate their teams, drawing them away from Grace and mc7, and then it was over. The Borg Cube gone, the Borg Drones killed. Luckily there were too few of them to allow them to adapt soon enough to the weapons. And Jamey's force field idea also helped immensly.
Nick heaved a sigh of relief, the adrenaline still coursing through his body. He had never used the rifle slung over his shoulder almost the whole mission, but he was glad it was there anyways: you never know.
He turned to Cyle, "Hey man, thanks. I don't think we could have made it without your Marine Squads. And you've been here longer than I, so you know this ship better." He offered his hand to his fellow officer. Cyle took it and they shook hands. Nick Hoped it continued this way, and didn't degenerate into a Federation Security vs. Marines thing as it sometimes did. But at this moment, Nick's greatest fear of confontation came from Denara. He hoped he could work it out with her. And he wasn't going to back down on his saying he'd call the counselor in on this, unless of course she changed before. He heard the doctor and her had a bit of a friendship, maybe he could ask her when things had quieted down.
There was jubilation across the bridge, now that the Borg were gone. But, things quieted down when the casualty reports came in. Even though he had yet to personally meet most of his team, he never-the-less felt responsible for their injuries. He prayed the two in the worst shape would come out of it. He dreaded the possibility of having to write the letters to their parents, a job he would do instead of the captain, as they were under his command.
As things calmed down a bit, Nick turned back to his console and put all systems on standbye, though shields were left on. Just in case something else happened. He wanted to wait until he was sure it was safe before he turned it all completely off.
"Cancel red Alert....Counselor Mitchel, Admiral Mc7_of_9, we are clear of the Borg. It is safe for you to release your personal shielding. Report back to the bridge."
Grace acknowledged Zhuk and released the shield from Mc7 and herself. They looked at each other, then Graced hugged Mc7. "It worked. They are gone. Thank goodness. I can't hear the Queen anymore, can you?"
Mc7 looked so relieved "No, but I haven't been able to hear the Queen since you put that shield up, did you."
"Yes, but only intermitten words that I couldn't make sense of."
"Let's go to the bridge and get an assessment of the damage." Mc7 directed.
The two of them left Grace's office and headed to a turbolift without the armed guard. Mc7 commented on this "Finally, no more guards. I was starting to feel claustriphobic."
"Is this something we should talk about, Sir." Grace said with a smirk.
"Very funny Counselor. Do you miss your guards?" Mc7 asked as they entered the turbolift "Bridge"
"Well, they gave me someone to talk to. It turned out one of my guards has an interest in another crewmember so he needed advice on just how to approach that person. Basically, I did my job while he was doing his job."
The turbolift doors opened at the bridge, mc7 stepped on the bridge and said in a commanding voice "Report, Colonal."
As Zhuk reported to Mc7, Grace stood by and listened, then excused herself from the bridge to go to sickbay and counsel the injuried. She had a fleeting thought that some of the crew could blame her and the Admiral for all that happened on this mission since the Queen had been after the Admiral and her. No, not this crew, they were reasonable and would not put blame to any one person.
"Congrats on a good job done Nick" Cyle said as he shook his hand. Cyle sighed in relief when he heard there werent deaths on either his or Nicks teams, and actually smiled.
Hannah joined the cheers that filled the bridge as the report came in. She felt a sigh of relief that the Borg were finally gone and the plan had actually worked. She listened in silence as the medical report came in of the casualties from engaging the Borg and released that they hadn’t gotten of scoot free. Hannah turned to the Andorian commander.
“Permission to leave the bridge and return to engineering to co-ordinate repairs,” Hannah said.
“Permission Granted,” he responded. Hannah headed into the nearby turbolift passing Grace and the Admiral who had just entered the bridge.
“Engineer,” she said as the turbolift door shut behind her. She knew there would only be minor damage where the battle with the Borg had occurred, it could have been a lot worse if they had got into a firefight with the cube.
Hannah entered engineering a few moments later, she noticed the Zardon officer standing over a control panel. She quickly searched her memory for his name.
“Ensign Terman, you’re with me, we are going to access the damage done on deck 12 by the fire fight,” she ordered him know that the politeness would just offend him.
“Understood,” he said and followed Hannah to get a couple of tool kits.
They headed out of engineering and back towards the turbolift. Hannah decided that she need to learn about her engineering team and that Ensign Terman was the first one she would start with.
“So, tell me a bit about yourself,” she said to him as they entered the turbolift.
“Deck 12,” she ordered. He thought for a moment.
“I was born on Zald, I’m the youngest of three brothers,” he said uncertain of what his new boss wanted to know, “I enjoy swimming, what else would you like to know?”
The turbolift stopped and they both stepped out.
“Why did you join Starfleet and become an engineer?” she asked him as she took her tricorder out of the box and began to run scans of the wall and look for any damage she could see herself. Ensign Terman scanned the other wall also looking for any damage.
“I’d learnt about other worlds at school, about how much more land they had. I was curious and wanted to see them and becoming an engineer was because I showed talent for that field of work,” he explained, “Why did you?”
“My mother’s ambition was for me to become a pilot in starfleet and she use to take me up for a flying lessons in an old shuttle,” Hannah explained, she felt sadness when talking about her mother, “One day the shuttle broke down and I helped my uncle fix it and that’s where the interest began, as I got older and older I learnt more about engineering and found I had a knack for it. I did a bit of work experience on Utopia Plantia and that’s when I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”
She looked at the computer interface that had a burnt hole in it and pulled it of the wall checking the circuits underneath. She then lifted out PAD of her toolbox and recorded the damage so they could pick up all the replacement parts and needed equipment when the survey was done and begin work on repairs.
