Matthew decided that it was time to deal with some unpleasant issues. After explaining his orders to Admiral Lin, he had been assured that no charges would fall on Megan. The only people that would need to know the autopsy results would be Megan, Admiral Lin, and himself. Allowing himself a few hours to sleep, Matt decided that the conversation could take place in the morning when the autopsy was completed and everyone had a nice rest.
"Commander Reynolds to Commander Garrett, please meet me in the ready room in fifteen minutes," Matt said as he tapped his combadge and left his quarters.
(Megan)
Arriving first, Matt replicated some tea and disabled all sensors inside the ready room. This would be a private matter between a CO and his executive officer.
"Commander please take a seat," Matt said as he pointed to the chair," we only have a few minutes before we reach Assailant and I want to have this conversation here."

=/\="Commander Reynolds to Commander Garrett, please meet me in the ready room in fifteen minutes.=/\= the voice of the acting CO requested over the comm.
“Acknowledged,” Megan replied, tapping her commbadge to close the channel. She had known this was probably coming but had still hoped to avoid it. As the current commanding officer of the Jefferson, Matt had a right to know what had happened in that cell. The trick was going to be relaying all the relevant information without evoking any suspicion as to her past. Even the slightest hint of something that didn’t make sense or the tiniest hesitation not played off as perfectly normal and understandable given the circumstances could undermine her anonymity.
Almost exactly fifteen minutes after being contacted, the acting first officer activated the chime to request entrance to the ready room, which was granted almost immediately. Stepping inside, Megan almost immediately dropped her guard in a carefully calculated way. It was always best to use real emotions, if they fit with the situation, to successfully pull of a deception. Looking a little uncomfortable and openly nervous, Megan came to a halt in front of the desk with her hands clasped firmly behind her back. “You wished to speak with me, Sir?” she questioned.
"Commander please take a seat,” Commander Reynolds offered, causing Garrett to comply, sitting in the offered chair with her hands folded in her lap, fidgeting slightly. “We only have a few minutes before we reach Assailant and I want to have this conversation here." he added his tone and expression leaving no doubt as to what this was about due to the unmistakable gravity of his demeanor.
Swallowing hard, Megan glanced down at her fingers before finally replying, “I understand, Sir. I assume you wish to know what exactly happened with the…with Sub-Commander Jombis?” Matt’s lack of response indicated that was indeed what he wanted to know, so with a sigh, the science officer continued. “I…I don’t know what happened. I thought I was being careful. I studied exobiology at the Academy and that included Romulan and Vulcan anatomy. I didn’t mean for him to…”
Megan’s voice stopped as it wavered slightly, seemingly unable to say the word die. Turning her head to glance out the window at the stars flying by, Commander Garrett sighed sadly before continuing. “I knew that the information he had was important and that we needed it for the safety of the Jefferson and its crew and the security of the Federation. I knew enough about Romulan physiology to know how to cause pain to try and get that information from him, but I clearly didn’t realize the limitations...and went too far. I didn’t intend to…do that much damage…”
Glancing back at Matt and meeting his gaze, allowing a few tears to come to her eyes, Megan quickly blinked them away and glanced down before looking back up. “In spite of my mistakes, he did tell me what he knew before he…” still unable to say that word, the science officer pushed back a non-existent strand of her hair before continuing. “The Debrune Ambassador was not kidnapped. He defected in favor of Unification with the Romulan Empire. Jombis indicated that there were others as well, a delegation. The minefield was designed to protect this information. The Jefferson was supposed to be destroyed. He revealed their location as Mu Arae IX. The name of that planet was one of the very last things that he said.”
Allowing a final hint of sorrow to slip through, Megan closed her eyes for a brief moment before opening them once more, determination replacing grief. “I did not mean to kill Jombis, Commander, but even though I did not know where to draw the line, I clearly knew enough to be effective. He gave me this information with his dying breath, and I believe he was telling the truth, completely. I will have to live with what I’ve done, but in spite of the pain this causes me, I know I did the right thing and that this information has the potential to save countless lives. As horrible as this is to say and consider, I would do it again if necessary to protect this ship, this crew, and the Federation. I can only hope that doesn’t make me a monster.”
Slumping backwards into the chair, seemingly emotionally exhausted, Megan met Commander Reynolds gaze sadly and asked, “Is there anything else that you wanted to know, Sir?” Commander Garrett had done everything possible to keep him from being at all suspicious displaying both her emotional reaction to what she had done as well as her inner strength and determination, which were entirely genuine. She had also provided a reasonable explanation as to why she may have been so successful without previous training and used her failure to keep Jombis alive to emphasize her supposed inexperience. She only hoped it was enough.

Matt was more than ready to proclaim Megan the best thing that ever happened to the Federation, but it just didn't feel right. Matt knew of the exobiology classes Megan spoke of; he had aced them all but it didn't explain the perfect technique used to extract information from a Romulan. Her emotions were so genuine that Matt was inclined to try and comfort her, but he had seen this before.
“Is there anything else that you wanted to know, Sir?” Commander Garrett asked.
"Actually there is," Matt said as he handed her what until recently had been Jombis autopsy results," I trust you know what this means?"
(Megan)
"We will release the body back to the Romulan Empire when we return to Assailant," Matt said," Ambassador Tedak is a personal friend of mine. He'll do it quietly."
Matt knew that intelligence would want him to give them the body, but he would not disgrace the man any further. He would need to use the back channels so that his crew remained protected from any charges.
"Commander Garrett, you understand that I will have to inform Admiral Lin of what happened?" Matt asked now able to ignore his sympathy towards the young woman.
(Megan)
"I have already been informed that nothing negative will result of this," Matt explained," all information regarding the Romulans is passed on to the Admiral who is charge of......."
Matt immeditaley stopped himself remembering the trust that had been entrusted to him so many years ago by Admiral Loskene. The Jefferson had almost thrown the Federation into an all out war two years ago and Section 47 had been preparing a contigency plan ever since. The information was currently classified and need to know only.
"Megan I won't order you to see Doctor Thompson, but I highly recommend it," Matt said as he rose from his seat to indicate that the meeting was over. He did not ask all the questions that he had in mind, but something had caught his interest about Megan.
(Megan)
"Commander Reynolds, please report to the bridge"
"Commander after you," Matt said as he waited for Megan to exit the ready room," I assume we are approaching Assailant?"
"Yes sir, we'll be docking within fifteen minutes," Monica said clearly pleased at the realization.
"All hands prepare for docking procedures. Department heads reports are due to Commander Garrett an hour after docking is complete. We'll be at Assailant for two weeks for upgrades and repairs, so enjoy yourselves," Matt said addressing the entire ship," Mr. Tagert take us in slow and easy."
"Commander we are recieving orders from Assailant," Monica reported as she activated the viewscreen.
"Commander Reynolds, Starbase Assailant is evacuated at the moment. Please take the Jefferson to Qualinost where the Debrune have graciously accepted your crew for R&R. They also wish to speak to you about the situation," Admiral Lin said looking more distress than he did a few days ago.
"Mr. Tagert, make course correction and put us in low orbit," Matt ordered.

Now that he was actually released and the news had sunk in, Nathan had found his way back to sickbay. He had walked slowly, though if had been able to, he'd have taken a run. Except he knew he had to take things slowly for a while, he didn't want to suffer a relapse of anything. He knew he'd been quite sick, even when Jombis hadn't been in his mind, but it had been a result of that event.
Hannah was already waiting for him when he walked in. "We just woke him up," she informed him, already guessing what he was about to ask. "We're on approach to Assailant and being in stasis for four days helped him. He's actually asked to speak with you."
Nathan stopped dead in his tracks. "He did?" He couldn't imagine Hrisvalar wanting to speak with him.
Hannah nodded. "His orders were quite specific doctor," she said earnestly, "he told me to fetch you the moment you were able to come down. Except he didn't know about your physical condition."
"Ah." He nodded towards the medical ward. "In there?" Hannah nodded again, upon which he swallowed nervously. What he had wanted to do hadn't accounted for the Andorian to be conscious at all. "You wished to see me?" He approached his commanding officer, though stopped at a fairly safe distance from the bed.
Hrisvalar nodded. The Andorian looked pale and weak, but otherwise quite alert. Yet, he didn't say anything for a long time, which only made Nathan even more nervous than he already was. "I heard you went through quite an ordeal," he finally spoke.
This time, Nathan nodded. "Yes sir," he answered, "however I do feel I should apologise to you. I would never have..." He trailed off when Hrisvalar silenced him, and steeled himself for a tirade, which to his surprise never came.
"I know," Hrisvalar finished for him, nodding in understanding. "And you'll feel guilty for a long while yet."
Nathan knew he would, if not forever. "I nearly lost my son over this," he went on, "I would very much like for that to never ever happen again. I've been ordered to partake in defensive and weapon's training." He issued the brigadier a look of pure loathing at the mention of weapons. "And I guess I should learn my own limits and take rest at more appropriate times. However, I truly am sorry to be responsible for your current condition."
Despite his fears, he approached the bed, coming within the Andorian's reach. "How can I ever make this up to you?" he asked.
Hrisvalar didn't answer; not because he didn't want to but because he had none. He remained silent, waiting for the doctor to continue, knowing he had more to say. He listened with mild annoyance when the human continued to explain his dream, sensing through his firelizard the discomfort the human experienced while doing so. "Intriguing," he answered, "but unlikely."
"I know," Nathan answered, squeezing the Andorian's hand lightly. "We shall be transferring you to a medical facility on Qualinost once we arrive at starbase, where you will be receiving better medical care than I could ever offer."
The human walked away, leaving the Andorian commanding officer to his own thoughts. It was getting late, and in the morning he would be reunited with his son, something he was quite looking forward to. He entered his quarters, finding them eerily quiet as his two pets weren't home either. Stiffling a yawn, he decided to still take all the rest he could get. Before too long, he would be busy enough already.

"Actually there is," Matt replied, handing her a padd. "I trust you know what this means?" Glancing at the autopsy report, Megan was taken by surprise. She had given the EMH explicit orders to inform her the minute it was completed. Of course perhaps Commander Reynolds had superseded her orders, but still…
“Someone deserves to be decompiled.” the science officer mused a bit perturbed as she began to look over the file. The details were…horrific and unfortunately made it all too clear that Megan had known exactly what she was doing. While Commander Garrett had never actually conducted an interrogation before, she had been well trained, and the results spoke for themselves. They were textbook…too textbook. Had the former agent had more experience, there would have been some deviation, some indication of style present, but instead it was simply typical.
The only thing that helped was the determination of cause of death. It wasn’t a direct result of the injuries Megan had inflicted, but rather a culmination of shock and stress, something that had been drilled into her as extraordinarily difficult to predict and detect, and often took years of practice to be able to recognize. That made her feel somewhat better. “I do.” the acting first officer replied, handing the padd back to her commanding officer. She wasn’t entirely sure if Matt was able to recognize what it meant, but kept quiet, glancing down at her hands once more.
"We will release the body back to the Romulan Empire when we return to Assailant. Ambassador Tedak is a personal friend of mine. He'll do it quietly." Matt informed her, causing her head to snap back up to look at him. Megan had wanted to find a way to return Jombis’ body to his family but had been unsure if this was possible. She knew Intelligence would not be happy but was secretly pleased he would be given a proper burial. "Commander Garrett, you understand that I will have to inform Admiral Lin of what happened?" Matt added.
“Yes, Sir, of course.” Megan replied smoothly, also knowing that although Lin and Matt would know what had happened, the records would soon vanish.
"I have already been informed that nothing negative will result of this. All information regarding the Romulans is passed on to the Admiral who is charge of…" the acting Captain hesitated then, and Megan silently supplied the end of that sentence. Though Matt would of course be oblivious to this, Commander Garrett was well aware of what he was talking about, perhaps even more aware than he.
When she had been transferred to the Jefferson, Admiral LaPage had briefed her on the current pending operations in the area. If something came up, and she was the closest qualified officer, Megan had agreed to assist in any way she could. Not only that, but with the specific file Matt was referring to, Garrett’s final mission in special ops had actually been part of the response and preparation.
"Megan I won't order you to see Doctor Thompson, but I highly recommend it.” Nodding in reply, the science officer tried to keep a straight face but felt a flash of a combination of relief and disdain. The last thing she wanted was to talk to Tamara, and since he hadn’t made it an order, there was no way she was going.
=/\=Commander Reynolds, please report to the bridge.=/\=
"Commander, after you." Matt said gesturing towards the door as the two officers made their way onto the bridge. "I assume we are approaching Assailant?"
"Yes sir, we'll be docking within fifteen minutes." "All hands prepare for docking procedures. Department heads reports are due to Commander Garrett an hour after docking is complete. We'll be at Assailant for two weeks for upgrades and repairs, so enjoy yourselves," Matt announced.
With a slight nod to Commander Reynolds, Megan headed for the turbolift. She was beginning to feel very good about the meeting she’d just come from, as it didn’t appear as though Matt was in any way suspicious. The science officer knew she had done and said everything she’d planned as well as she possibly could have, so there was no reason to be overly concerned, especially since he hadn’t displayed any skepticism. All Commander Garrett could do was hope it had worked.
Now she had one final thing to deal with…something she was very much not looking forward to one little bit. A few minutes later, a visibly uncomfortable Megan Garrett stood outside the quarters of Doctor Nathan van Breughel. She was aware he was supposed to be resting but desperately needed to get this over with as soon as possible. After taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, Megan somewhat hesitantly rang the chime and waited, hoping this would go well and end quickly.

"Yessir." Tom said, as he pretty much, just hit the auto pilot. Docking procedures, were mainly carried out by a Doppler radar like the ones in old Navy planes of the late 1900s, updated of course, but not much difference. The Doppler radar sent out a signal, the signal bounced off of a solid Sufus returning a radio signal back in seconds, telling the Jefferson it was X amount of meeter's from the wall/bay door/hull of another ship. Tom set X variable to 50 Meters and Y point, for section 3 Bay 1.
"Commander we are receiving orders from Assailant," Monica reported as she activated the viewscreen.
"Commander Reynolds, Starbase Assailant is evacuated at the moment. Please take the Jefferson to Qualinost where the Debrune have graciously accepted your crew for R&R. They also wish to speak to you about the situation," Admiral Lin said.
"Mr. Tagert, make course correction and put us in low orbit," Matt ordered.
Canceling docking procedures, Tom pulled away from the station and set the Jefferson in a low orbit around the southern hemisphere.

“Garrett to T’Ress, I understand you’ve acquired one of the Romulan mines..."
T'Ress smirked in a cocky manner that was much unlike him. Tapping his badge, he flicked his tail to the back of his seat, "I do not believe you understand correctly, Commander. I do not of course mean to be rude. However, it is not that I have only acquired a Romulan mine...I have been able to manufacture another one...with anolougous Federation technology that is. Would you have any interest in viewing the device? It is currently stored in the weapons storage bay and infact could be ejected from a quantum torpedo launcher should we have any reason to actually use it.
<tag Garrett - sorry for taking so long!> ----------------
The lift doors opened and Tommy rushed out. "Sorry Commander." He said.
The feline nodded slowly as he took his seat back at the engineering console with a gentle sigh, the sound of the pulsating engine core beating behind them as it undulated each photon of light in the turn that it usually sounded off with.
"Are you unwell? Murr, if you are late due to illness, perhaps it best if you return to your quarters." With a shift of his tail, he nodded, "Or purrrhaps even better, you may report to sickbay. I will not hold that absence against you I hope you know."
Being told that the other was not actually ill and simply over slept, the feline laughed, "I will not hold that against you either. Everyone has taken that route once in their life." Smirking once more, he returned to the task at hand...er..paw.
Leaning back again, he shut his eyes, "I trust you, yourself have heard of the mine? I have had some of the data transfered to your helm console so that the controls shall be very easy to demand certain movements from that would permit us to develop an escape route, should any hostilities arise that make use of our enemies trying to plant a field. I hope that is an acceptable...modification. Merrow."

fEarlier that morning
"I trust you, yourself have heard of the mine? I have had some of the data transfered to your helm console so that the controls shall be very easy to demand certain movements from that would permit us to develop an escape route, should any hostilities arise that make use of our enemies trying to plant a field. I hope that is an acceptable...modification. Merrow."
"Yes sir." Tom replied, thinking he had seen the effect of the cloaked mine, but was surprised to see how small they were. Tom didn't know much about the mine, so as J'Varr handed him a PADD with his explanation of how the thing worked he was ready to read. "So. It's a new cloak design, inside a casing the same width of a torpedo but a quarter of the lengs... Its an antimatter warhead?"
Tag J'Varr
"Damn. I guess all this room is for the cloak." Tom said with a grin. He remembered all the damage that the mine had done and quickly tried to look less impressed. Tom cleared his throat before continuing. "Commander I was thinking about the way it acted on the bridge." J'Varr looked puzzled. "I'm sorry, I think I started the first part of that conversation in my head. When I was tracking the mines on the bridge, the cloak was perfect...Except for a faint tetryon corona that looked like random radiation. What if we could find out what the tetryon corona is coming from and set a mine with an inverse tetryon field? I think it would attract the other mines like a magnet. The Romulans will catch on fast but we could get a couple of tries before they figured it out, and It would also be attracted to cloaked ship...Provieded they're using the same type of cloak...Theoreticly." Tom grined again, this time looking a little unsure of his plan.

Nathan had made it halfway between the bathroom and his bed when the chime went off, signaling there was someone at his door. "Come," he called, reaching for his robe. Barefoot, he padded back into the living area, wondering who would be calling in this late. Stiffling another yawn, he headed towards the door then froze.
"C-commander," he managed, when he finally found his voice. "What can I do for you?" He took a few steps back, putting as much distance between himself and the science chief as humanly possible in the confinement of his livingroom.
She didn't look as terrifying as he had last seen her, but the image was burned freshly into his memory. In fact, she looked more nervous than angry. The doctor relaxed somewhat, regaining some of his composure. "Can I offer you anything?" he asked, annoyed that he found himself trembling at the sight of her.
Something told Nathan that Megan hadn't come round at this late hour just to be nice or friendly, and he was quite certain she hadn't come visiting as a friend checking up on another friend. To his knowledge, they were not friends, but perhaps that could change in the future; he didn't know.
The only person he had expected to come visit as soon as he would find out was Cyle, as he felt the two of them shared some sort of connection. The other person would be J'Varr, for a similar reason as well as that he somewhat did consider the feline to be a friend. But certainly not the science chief, even though he knew she was aware that his son doted on her.
Quietly, he took a seat on the longer couch and invited Megan to join him. He remained silent, waiting for her to start talking.

The brief look of terror that crossed the doctor’s face at the sight of her devastated Megan. It was little wonder he was afraid of her, after what she’d done to him, but it hurt nonetheless. He clearly hadn’t been expecting visitors, as the bathrobe would indicate, and the science officer felt a brief moment of panic; she shouldn’t be bothering him right now… "C-commander…what can I do for you?" Nathan queried as he stepped pretty far back, clearly not wanting to be very close to her.
Now feeling even more uncomfortable, Megan took a tiny step back herself and replied, “I apologize for disturbing you. If this is a bad time, I can come back later...”
Nathan shook his head, appearing less afraid of her now. Every second that passed he looked a little calmer. "Can I offer you anything?" he asked politely.
Still feeling awkward, Megan took a single step inside, just enough to clear the door allowing it to close behind her. “No, thank you,” Commander Garrett replied, fidgeting slightly with her fingers. Nathan nodded before moving to sit on the couch, motioning for her to join him. “Thank you,” she repeated, sitting on the other end of the long seat, hoping to give him as much space as he might need or want between them.
When Doctor van Breughel remained silent, clearly waiting for her to say why she was here, Megan swallowed hard and glanced down at her fingers. This was extremely difficult for her, and it showed. “Doctor…I…I came here to…apologize to you...for what happened to you…in the brig. I...I didn’t mean for that to happen. I had no idea that was even a possibility or I never would have…”
Breaking off and having to glance back down at her hands, the science officer took a deep calming breath before looking back up to meet the doctor’s eyes directly. “I am so sorry for what I put you through, and I want you to know that in spite of my lack of intention to cause you pain, I don’t take what happened lightly. I feel absolutely horrible, and I hope you can find a way to forgive me, though I would completely understand if you couldn’t. In fact, if you don’t feel comfortable working with me anymore I...I’ll request a transfer if that will make it easier for you.”
Nathan had remained absolutely silent, listening with growing horror to what she was telling him. However he was a doctor first and as a doctor he could see how greatly this disturbed her. Overcoming his terror, he reached forward and took one of her stone-cold hands in his own.
"I can see how this troubles you," he offered, "and though you cannot imagine what I went through, I can see you're sorry. Don't let this burden you any longer, I won't. Perhaps we can work this through together, as collegues and perhaps in the future as friends. I have nothing against you, personally, but that person I saw when I was confined, she terrorised me, I was so afraid of her. Who I see now though, is not her. The way I see it, you couldn't have known Jombis would project it to me. It was, after all, quite hard to believe to begin with, wasn't it?"
Megan flinched slightly at the touch of his hand on hers, but didn’t jump or pull away. Nathan was trying to comfort her, but she didn’t deserve comfort right now. The science officer hadn’t realized he had seen her after his heart attack, and now felt even guiltier. She hadn’t wanted anyone to see her like that because in a way that was almost an entirely different person. The doctor was right about one thing…it was still very hard to believe that pain could have been transmitted like that, especially enough to cause physical damage. Even though they both knew this was true, the fact that it was so hard to accept showed just how impossible it would have been for her to predict. This certainly hadn’t been on purpose…
“You’re right…it’s still hard to believe, even though it’s the only explanation and is supported by the facts. I may not have intended for this to happen, but I’m still terribly sorry for putting you through this. But…thank you for being so understanding and forgiving.” Megan replied, managing a slight smile. Even though she still felt really bad, Nathan had managed to help her feel a little bit better. “I should probably get going; I don’t want to keep you. Thank you again, Doctor. You…I...” unable to find the words to convey how grateful she was and how much he had helped her, the Commander glanced down at her fingers before finally adding one last thank you.

"So. It's a new cloak design, inside a casing the same width of a torpedo but a quarter of the lengs... Its an antimatter warhead?"
The feline nodded slowly, "Yes, yes that is correct. It works based on fusion of matter with anti-matter as the way flooding the bulkheads with warp plasma is used during a self-destruct aboard a Federation starship...murr." He sat back into the seat, yawning slowly as the conversation continued.
"Damn. I guess all this room is for the cloak."
With another nod, J'Varr admitted his agreement, "Yes, the entire main concourse of the weapon consists of a cloaking device, murr..it is as if they were using a silencer. As I know your familiar with weapons of a prior age, then you understand firearm suppression? They use a similar concept. Layered tachyon grids to attempt to disguise the cloak as common radiation."
"...Except for a faint tetryon corona that looked like random radiation..."
Again, he nodded, "Aye, that's exactly what I am speaking of. They use a layered system so very little else can be emitted. What you are talking about with the magnetic theory, however, seems to be a purrfect way to combat it. In fact, the prototype that I had constructed could be easily converted into a system that could be replicated. Merrow, with a store of replications we would have a viable mass. We could deploy it in such a manner as to have a protective grid. In fact, with the addition of a very small propulsion system, they could operate as a shield for proverbial depth charged. Generally undetectable. I can only hope that the Romulans do not site any legal concerns of the entire operation, however."

The next morning, Nathan was rudely wakened when his son jumped upon him, screaming with joy. "Daddy, you're home!" he cried, hugging his father tightly, trapping him beneath his blankets.
Nathan just smiled and allowed the boy to continue for a little while, then gently shoved him aside so that he could sit up. "I see there's nothing wrong with your eyes," he said, still smiling. "I got home last night but you were already asleep." He sneezed twice. "And you've been near plants."
Dutifully, the boy reached into a drawer and handed his father his medications. "Tanis got very nice flowers in his quarters," he explained happily, "just too bad we can't have any."
"We can, as long as they don't have flowers," Nathan corrected him, "so, what did you want to do today? We're near a planet I think, do you want to go sightseeing?" His expression darkened for a second while he wondered if he was at all allowed to leave the ship. Nearly all charges were dropped and he had a compulsary month of vacation, so what would he do?"
"I want to go to this planet," Freddy called, visibly delighted, "oh please can we go down?"
"I'll check with Commander Reynolds. Perhaps he and his son would like to join us? You and Caleb get along all right?"
Freddy nodded. "Oh yes, we're mates I think?" he looked thoughtful. "Can I call him?"
"Of course. And while you do I'll get dressed and start breakfast." The doctor rose from the bed and padded into the bathroom, preparing for a busy day ahead; a busy day relaxing that is.
Meanwhile, Freddy tapped his own combadge. "Caleb Reynolds, are you there?" He paused a few seconds. "Dad and I are going to see this planet...do you and your dad want to come along?"

"I can only hope that the Romulans do not site any legal concerns of the entire operation, however." J'Varr finished. "Well if we can excuse their act of war, surely they can ours." Tom said with a wink. Tag J'Varr"Yes Sir." Tom acknowledged. "I'm gonna to get to the bridge, Commander. If that's alright?" Tag J'Varr"Thank you sir. We should be arriving at Starbase Assailant within the hour." Tom said with a salute and a smile. "Hey." Tom said in a little higher pitch, that made the Catian, want to turn his head and find out, where the sound had come from. "What are you planing for your shore leave? I've got a new Western program about some of Earths Wild west hero's. Wild West: Stories Untold VI. Should be fun." Tag J'Varr"Well if you get done with your work, Holodeck 1, Twenty Hundred hours Tomorrow." Tag J'VarrTom stopped by Sickbay, finally getting his Beard suppressor from Hannah. Then continuing to the bridge to prepare for docking procedures.

Caleb Reynolds was usually a very laid back ten year old. In the two years since meeting his adopted father many things had changed in his young life. Most of those changes were positive and bettered both of their lives, but his father's promotion to acting captain worried Caleb. He knew that his father was ready to lead the Jefferson in the Brigadier's absence, but a prolonged stint as commanding officer was something Caleb didn't feel his father was ready for. The last time he was in command of a starship a few members of the crew had lost there lives and the guilt had been unbearable.
"How is Brigadier Hrisvalar?" Caleb asked happy to see that his father had finally gotten off work.
"He's doing better, but he will require extensive care for a while," Matt replied as he removed his uniform for something more casual," I heard that you and your classmates sent him a get well card."
"Yeah, I hope he liked it," Caleb said as he handed his father his finished homework.
"I hope so, but you know how marines can be," Matt said as he inspected his usual outstanding work.
"Caleb Reynolds, are you there?" He paused a few seconds. "Dad and I are going to see this planet...do you and your dad want to come along?"
"Stop being so formal Freddy," Caleb said already planning the execursion in his head," when do you want to go down to the planet?"
(Freddy)
"Alright, we'll meet you and your dad later today," Caleb said before turning his attention to his dinner.
"Glad to know that I don't have to make the important decisions," Matt said with a knowing smile," and no to every question you are about to ask."
"Come on dad, I want to see if the Debrune can laugh," Caleb said knowing the relationship between the Debrune and their cousins the Vulcans.

After talking to Nathan, Megan felt a whole lot better. There was still plenty emotional fallout remaining from what happened, but the Commander felt like she had more control over it now. The last and final remaining thread to tie off was the transport of Jombis’ body back to Romulus. While the science officer was dying to get back into her normal, shoreleave routine and focus on the variety of experiments currently being conducted aboard the Jefferson, including J’Varr’s work with the Romulan mines, she knew well enough that she wouldn’t be able to entirely put this behind her until every last facet of this whole ordeal had been thoroughly processed. Thus, the body of the Tal Shiar agent needed to get sent on its way as soon as possible.
Commander Reynolds had already contacted his friend, and the Romulan Ambassador was scheduled to beam aboard shortly. Although part of Megan was tempted to just allow him to retrieve the body to be sent for burial back home, she needed to deal with this...even if all that really needed to be done was to escort the diplomat to the morgue and provide the necessary data and proper authorization for beaming the Sub-Commander off the Jefferson. ‘This is almost completely over. Then things can go back to the way they were before.’ Garrett reminded herself as she stepped inside transporter room two and nodded to the operator to energize.
As the figure of the Romulan coalesced on the padd wearing his robes, the sight of him automatically kicked Megan into a friendly, diplomatic mode. “Welcome aboard the Jefferson, Ambassador Tedak, although I wish it was under far better circumstances. I’m Commander Megan Garrett, Chief Science Officer and Acting Executive Officer. We should probably wait to discuss further details until later.”
Tedak nodded once in reply as the two left the transporter room for the turbolift. As Megan fell silent, the momentary kick of energy from her training fading fast as her mood became much more somber. This was no casual matter, but something very serious. The trip to the morgue was eerily quiet, and once at their cold destination that tension was only heightened. As the door closed behind them, the science officer quickly sealed the door, having already disabled any surveillance. Her mask now firmly in place, Commander Garrett crossed the room to activate the control to release the body from stasis, standing motionless as the still form covered in a white sheet emerged from the alcove in the wall before coming to a halt.
“I can assure you, Ambassador, Sub-Commander Jombis’ death was an accident. There was no intention on our part to end his life, and we had no part in bringing him here. He was beamed to the bridge without our knowledge or approval. Dying while in our custody is...unfortunate but unintentional.” Megan assured the Romulan almost emotionlessly, before a hint of guilt slipped through her control. “Please convey our condolences to his family...and my deepest sympathy as well.”

"Commander Reynolds, you wanted to be informed when Ambassador Tedak arrived onboard," the ops officer reported over the comm.
"Yes, where is he now?" Matt asked as he quickly found a clean uniform and waved goodbye to his son.
"He's in the morgue with Commander Garrett," the ops officer replied.
"Thank you, Crewman," Matt said pleased that he would be able to see his friend again. The last time he had spoken to Tedak he was expressing his condolences on the death of Tedak's adoptive son. Many things had changed in the past few years, but Matt was certain that Tedak would always be there to help him in jam.

"I assume you know that the Tal Shair wants his family killed," Matt said as he handed him all the information he had been able to gather on Jombis," Tedak this needs to stay between us."

ooc: double posting on SBA and Jefferson, with permission of Commander Reynolds
~the next day~
Tedak watched from a little distance as his ex-wife waved her husband off. Doctor Stuart Mercy was going on a private mission, he was told, and would be back in a day, possibly two. Stuart though, as usual had turned to the Romulan diplomat with the request to look after T'Val, as he had promised he would. There no longer was any bad blood between Human and Romulan, as both had accepted their own part in the life of a woman they both loved.
Turning back, the Romulan left the Vulcan woman to be on her own for a little while. "Look after her," he told Govan, "and see if there are any more leads on Vebn's whereabouts. You'll be the first to know if V'Shal contacts me again, and this time we'll find her if she does. I have some business to conduct on the USS Jefferson."
Tedak paused briefly, fond memories of the ship coming back to him. He had served there for a while as diplomatic observer, even clashed with the then operations chief, Matt Reynolds. They'd been arguing over a woman, if he remembered correctly. A woman he had ended up loving and caring for, but also a woman who had left him to pursue a career on Earth. "I won't be longer than a few hours," he promised, "if I'm not back by this evening, you can come fetch me if it so pleases you, but you're not coming with me just now, is that clear?" He nodded towards the retreating Vulcan. "You are to keep her safe at all cost, she is important to Doctor Mercy and important to me."
Leaving Govan to fume for a while, Tedak stepped upon the transporter pad, delivering him to the Jefferson a scant few seconds later. He was met by a very young and businesslike woman in a teal uniform and though she was very polite and diplomatic, his intelligence instincts told him she was far from what she appeared to be.
However, since she was not indicating she wanted this to be commented on, Tedak pretended not to have noticed and followed her to sickbay, where he listened to her explanations regarding Jombis' death. She was barely finished when his old acquaintance entered the morgue. “Please convey our condolences to his family...and my deepest sympathy as well.”
"I shall commander, and thank you for your explanation. It was most helpful." He turned to face Matt, a slight smile appearing on his face, then bowed slightly.
Tedak, thank you for coming so quickly," Matt said as he waited for Megan to finish," I see that life on Assailant is as dangerous as ever."
"Indeed," the diplomat replied as he shook Matt's hand. "And one of our diplomats have been abducted and I am attempting to find out where he is. You will have to excuse me if I say I am on a tight schedule, though I have a few hours to spare for you. My...aide is following a few leads as we speak. I see, however you wished to inform me of something else?"
"I assume you know that the Tal Shair wants his family killed," Matt said as he handed him all the information he had been able to gather on Jombis," Tedak this needs to stay between us."
"I can't give you any guarantees, but I'll do what I can to keep his family safe," Tedak promised, "I do assume Admiral Lin has been informed? If so, than I shall make certain he knows that I'm doing all I can, as long as he keeps this under wraps from his side."
He paused. "Is there anything else? I had promised T'Val to keep her company, now that Stuart is away on an errand. I doubt my aide is pleasant company to her." He chuckled at the very idea. "He is, actually my bodyguard rather than aide, but he's very helpful, if not a complete nuicance!"

"T'Ress Alpha-Three-Five," Tamara said to the computer outside of the holodeck. The screen flashed "Fading Sun" as the title of the simulation. The fact that the file wasn't locked didn't surprise her. The program, as Tamara had entered it, had some variance to that of J'Varr's program, specifically, those parts of the program that required access to his personal files. She didn't wish to breach his trust - she just immensely enjoyed the relaxation aspect of the program, and with everyone busy and finding herself with some off time now that Nathan and Freddy were offboard, it seemed to be a perfect way to unwind.
The bridge of the USS Fading Sun was just as she remembered it last time with the exception of crew. She hadn't started the simulation yet, but just turned it on.
She wore the rear-Admiral's uniform she had replicated the last time she had visited with J'Varr. She had since let down the hem somewhat so as to not show so much of her dark legs. It was moot, since nobody would be seeing her in the simulation anyway, but her old-fashioned nature made her feel uncomfortable with wearing such provocative clothing.
Tamara started the simulation, and swiftly made her way to the cargo bay- the bay with the large forcefield window. If she remembered correctly, it was a relaxing scene. She felt it the perfect place to unwind, and hurried herself before anyone on the simulated ship could stop to schmooze with a Rear Admiral.
It took a long time for the Counselor to open the payload doors, but finally found the appropriate sequence of buttons and levers. At one point, prior to their opening, she had activated decompression. A different time she had accidentally opened the payload doors without activating the force field. Both times, she was saved by the Holodeck's Safety routines.
The nebula was swirling, just as it was before. The smoothness of it, due to it's slow and imperceivable rotation, was beautiful. Tamara laid down on the floor, watching it out the tall payload door while on her back, before closing her eyes and falling asleep in the simulation.

"We both know that T'Val can take care of herself," Matt said happy to see that Tedak had not changed since he served on board the Jefferson," Tedak I would be forever in your debt if you gave me all the information you have on the Empire. I know that I'm asking a lot, but something is not right here and things that are out of our control have been set in motion. The Debrune don't want anyone to know, but a Debrune Elder has already defected to the Empire. It was a trap Tedak and we almost didn't make it!"
Matt had never known Tedak to stop and think before he acted. He usually acted on instinct and faced the consequences later and he was seriously giving Matt's request some thought. Matt had long ago realized that Tedak would always have the Empire's interest in mind, but he was able to see both sides.
"I'm not asking you to betray the Empire, which they think you have or they wouldn't have a babysitter following you around everywhere," Matt said," I'm no Admiral Lin, but we're out there on the front lines. Jombis death was a tragedy, but we were able to obtain a lot of valuable information. We both know that the Federation will not allow a Romulan/Debrune alliance so close to Federation space."

"Well if we can excuse their act of war, surely they can ours." Tom said with a wink. "Do you not recall what was the last mission, murr? I do not know for how long you were with us last time, however, there was a great deal of cloaked technology on the part of Starfleet. That was a major crux of the last operation. The Romulans did not call us out on the treaties then, I doubt highly that they shall now." "Yes Sir." Tom acknowledged. "I'm gonna to get to the bridge, Commander. If that's alright?" The feline shut his eyes gently, "Murr...if you do not mind, I would much prefer to accompany you. I have my own tasks to be accomplished there, and if it should not be of any offense, I should join you upon the bridge. How long until we reached Assailant?" "Thank you sir. We should be at Assailant within the hour." With a nod, the feline made his way into the turbolift alongside their helmsman. Raising a brow to him, he pressed the tactile interface that was before him as his tail slowly found its way into his forepaws. "...new Western program about some of Earths Wild west hero's. Wild West: Stories Untold VI. Should be fun." He smiled with a bit of a nod, "Well then, would you care for me to join you? Or was that not an open invitation? Sometimes, it is difficult for me to tell to be honest." "Well if you get done with your work, Holodeck 1, Twenty Hundred hours Tomorrow." A raise of the brow was a non-verbal issue by the feline as if to query that as an affirmative answer. His mind then started to wander, and he began to think of the USS Fading Sun simulation he had become so attached to. Muttering inside his mind, he made note that he would have to remove the levers that controlled the payload doors since they were too dangerous and easy to compress. After all, a simple command would open those doors anyways, and various Constellation captains did have them removed. [Sorry Tamara, I had to ]

"I shall commander, and thank you for your explanation. It was most helpful." the Ambassador replied before turning to speak to Commander Reynolds who had just entered the morgue, surprising Megan slightly by his prompt appearance.
As the two men talked, Commander Garrett remained quiet and observed. While Matt had said they were friends, Megan hadn’t quite counted on just how friendly a Romulan ambassador and a Federation Commander could be. She had been expecting Tedak to grill her about what exactly had happened with Jombis, as the death of a citizen of the Romulan Empire and a Tal Shiar agent aboard a Starfleet vessel was kind of a big deal, and a potential diplomatic nightmare. However, he didn’t seem particularly concerned or curious, which surprised Megan immensely.
However, in spite of this surprise, there was no way Megan was going to bring it up. Getting Jombis to his family and keeping them alive was in Tedak’s hands now, and there was nothing more she could do. It felt…strange to be trusting another Romulan with this, and the Commander’s training and past experience practically screamed that he couldn’t be trusted, but this wasn’t her call. The Ambassador seemed…amicable enough, but she still felt it best to never trust a Romulan.
Megan carefully listened to every word exchanged between the two friends, even though she didn’t know enough about what was going on to really understand the meaning or importance of what was said. Still, the former agent made note of the names mentioned and any vague details for future reference before starting to interject, but Matt beat her to it. “Tedak I would be forever in your debt if you gave me all the information you have on the Empire. I know that I'm asking a lot, but something is not right here and things that are out of our control have been set in motion. The Debrune don't want anyone to know, but a Debrune Elder has already defected to the Empire. It was a trap Tedak and we almost didn't make it!"
Shocked, Megan’s mouth dropped open as she stared at her commanding officer. Never in a million years would she ever have even imagined that he would be so open…with a Romulan! When he first asked for information, Garrett hid a smile at the idea of Tedak actually providing intelligence voluntarily, but when Reynolds mentioned the Debrune defector and practically handed what Jombis had died giving them over to the Ambassador, the science officer felt her heart almost stop. It was too late to say anything now, but the acting first officer was stunned.
"I'm not asking you to betray the Empire, which they think you have or they wouldn't have a babysitter following you around everywhere. I'm no Admiral Lin, but we're out there on the front lines. Jombis death was a tragedy, but we were able to obtain a lot of valuable information. We both know that the Federation will not allow a Romulan/Debrune alliance so close to Federation space." Matt continued, deepening the hole he was digging them all into in Megan’s eyes.
Glancing hesitantly, but with an almost morbid curiosity, at Tedak, Garrett waited for his response, feeling in her heart that her superior had just made a big mistake but hoping somehow they hadn’t all just been doomed. If the Ambassador wasn’t to be trusted, Jombis’ parents were as good as dead and any advantage they might have had during their next encounter with the Romulans was just as dead.

"It's good that you're not asking me," Tedak replied, though there was anger seeping through into his voice, "and Major Echal is not my babysitter. He was assigned to me for protection, as there have been several attempts on my life. Or so Major Echal claims, and he has saved my life twice now. He is only not here because I told him not to come. I convinced him that I am quite safe aboard this ship, unless I misinformed him?"
The Romulan paused, knowing his words were well below the provisional belt. "You questioned a Romulan citizen, who died in your care," he continued, "I will not be able to avoid further investigation into this, but as diplomat I shall endeavour to persuade them not to. From the injuries inflicted, I can tell his death was not accidental, however as you also explained he came into your care unwanted and unexpected. And did he not assault people of your crew?"
Seeing the surprise flicker across Megan's face he nodded. "I have my sources," he explained, "Commander Jombis was not the only one who once was in the service of the Tal Shiar. And, as far as a Debrune/Romulan alliance goes, I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to comment on that, especially since my interests in this matter are somewhat conflicted."
Tedak turned to Megan, to include her into the conversation. "As Commander Reynolds may have told you, I was once married to a Vulcan healer, of whom it was discovered she is of Debrune ancestry. As such, we were able to adopt an orphaned Debrune infant who was said to be the Divine Child. We raised him as though he was our own son, and even after our divorce we both cared for him, also teaching him what we could about his Debrune history. Sadly, a few months ago, our son was killed in a tragic accident. As you can see, my own feelings are involved in this matter, thus I must distance myself from it."
Now, he turned back to Matt. "However, I shall convey your concerns to all diplomatic parties involved, upon our next meeting. In the mean time, perhaps you could enlighten a somewhat disgraced diplomat with a few tales of this magnificent vessel? I already saw you have a few new crewmembers; didn't I see a huge cat earlier? And who took command after dear old Loskene disappeared? Rayna, one of T'Val's nurses if you remember, can't stop wondering."

Outgoing Message To: Dr. Baron Thompson
Baron,
It has been a while since I have been able to write. As you can imagine, things can be quite hectic aboard a Starship. I assure you, had I been given the opportunity earlier to just drop a line to you, I would have. It has finally come to a lull in the activity- at least, relating to my position as Counselor, that has finally allowed me to sit down and send a few words out.
How is Dabnus? Have you heard from him? I know I wasn't the happiest when he left for the Marines, but I am proud. Now, seeing what the marines do (we have a few on our ship... the CO of our ship, nonetheless!), I am even more proud of him. He is a hard worker, and hopefully will be rewarded for it. I look forward to hearing any stories he has shared with you. I miss you both terribly.
I, myself - I've been keeping myself rather busy. My job role aboard this ship is very loosely defined, but I believe that has been purposeful. When I was assigned to my position, I was thrown into the midst of a chaotic crew, and had to hit the ground running. I ran, but not in the direction I had intended.
Brigadier Hrisvalar (the marine CO I mentioned above) is very demanding, but not in the normal sense. He insists upon my opinions, but constantly second guesses me to the point I end up discouraged. And you know me- I'm hard to discourage. Still, something tells me that he needs me aboard, but just won't admit it to himself, or to me. Why else would he have requested a Counselor from command, and why else would Command wish to enlist me instead of the Counselors that are already a part of Starfleet? I can't help but think this job was meant for someone with my attitude. Armed with that knowledge, I have made the best of things here.
I have made a few friends, but perhaps they are better defined by the term 'acquaintances' since we are forced to interact on the job. There is a nice Caitian engineer by the name of J'Varr- he is one of the relative few that nods politely when we pass each other, and has a sensitive side that I had been privy to see while Counseling him. With recent events, though, he has been busy, and our paths rarely cross.
I spend most of my time (I can't believe I am admitting this) with a four year old, being tugged around at his every whim. I think I've eaten enough chocolate cake in the last six months to last me a lifetime! 'Freddy' is the boy's name. He's the son of chief doctor on the ship. The Doctor is a single father, and tries his hardest to be there for his son, but hard work is hard work (as I remember your father always saying). I take the form of a nanny sometimes to be nice... most of the time, though, it's because it is just plain fun. You know how I've always loved kids... and chocolate cake!
As for others on the ship, I haven't really interacted much with them. Most divert their eyes when they see me, probably figuring that I will want to do some sort of psychoanalysis on them. Truth-be-told, though, I would very surprised if anyone on this ship was deemed 'normal'. It takes a special quirk to want to live this lifestyle. I'm just here to make sure those quirks don't get out of hand. I wish I was seen first as just a normal social interaction, and second as a Counselor.
I suppose I should close this letter, seeing how I have a pile of data logs to read through. I have taken it upon myself to create some pet projects with this crew. I'm considering writing a paper or two while here, maybe submit something to the Board when I get back. We'll see.
Take care, Sweety. I'll try to write to you more often now that things have settled down. I can't wait to hear from you!
Love, 'Mara

Matt knew that he had committed a tactical error in relaying all the information that Jombis had told Megan, but he knew that Tedak wouldn't do anything to hurt the Jefferson or her crew. Matt could sense Megan's frustration and anger at his decision to confine in Tedak, but she would have to deal with it.
"Thank you my friend," Matt said knowing full well that his investigation into the Romulan Empire would not end with a few Ambassadors. Matt was relatively young but even he had a few connections that no one would suspect," Commander Garrett would you like to join us?"
(Megan)
"Tedak, have you found anyone special?" Matt asked hoping his friend's romantic life had preformed better than his political one," I'm happy to say that I'm still seeing Kristin Hope, the Transporter Chief."
(Tedak)
"When Loskene left, Zhukarak Hrisvalar, a marine took command of the Jefferson," Matt responded remembering the first time he had met the Andorian," he demoted me because I punched you. I would have thought you would have remembered that."
(Tedak)
"He's a good man, but doesn't know when to lighten up sometimes," Matt replied sincerely," he demands the best and weeds out the weak. And yes that was a Caitian you saw earlier, the Jefferson is lucky to have amazing chief engineers."
(Tedak)
"I would like your opinion on something Tedak," Matt said making sure he understood that this was private," its concerning my chief medical officer."
(Tedak)
"He's an amazing doctor, as good as I have ever seen," Matt said wholeheartedly," but he doesn't always follow the rules. I know, irony at its finest but I don't know how to proceed. The doctor is a civilian and doesn't fall under Starfleet's jurisdiction. You served aboard this ship in a similar civilian capacity, what would be the best way to get through to him."

The Opps. Manager turned to the helmsman and said. "Tom the Transporters are down for repairs. You think you could get someone to shuttle personnel down for shore leave?" "Well, I would be more than happy to. Do we have anybody ready to leave now?" Tom asked. "Yes. Lt. Hernandez is in the main shuttle bay." "Tell him I'm on my way."
Tom headed for the lift and made his way to the shuttle bay. As he entered the shuttle bay he noticed Lt. Hernandez. "She" was a short girl with rather wide thighs and a cute face. (OOC: Sound familiar?) The Lt. blushed and Tom felt the funny smile come to his face. "Howdy Miss Hernandez." Tom said. "Good morning. Sir." Hernandez replied. 'Well I guess I finally know her name.' He thought. 'Jenna even her name is beautiful.' "Well let's get going." "Yes sir." Jenna said. "Now you can stop that "Sir" BS right now." "Yes sir" Jenna said as she made a funny face, sticking her tongue out of the side of her mouth and scrunching up her nose. Tom crossed his arms rolled his eyes then shook his head like he dissaproved...then chuckled and they both entered the shuttle.
"So where ya from?" Tom asked "I was born on Mars colony, but I was raised on Earth." Said Jenna. "Where at?" "Colorado. How long is the trip to the surface?" "10 minuets. Why? You want me to circle the block? I see a good place to park if your just wanting to wait till your ready for shore leave." "Won't they come looking for us." "No of course not." Tom smiled. "Well aren't you my superior office?" Jenna asked playfully. "Yes I am. And that means that I can order you not to tell anyone about what I'm about to do to ya." "I promise." Said Jenna
Tom Smiled as he put the shuttle on auto pilot. He lifted himself out of his seat and over toward Jenna. She rose too as Tom reached for her lower back with his left hand, holding her close to his body. Tilting his head to the left, he reached in and touched his lips to hers. His right hand rose to the back of her head as he stuck his tongue in her mouth. His cheeks were tingling as they both went over on the floor.
Twenty minuets later The shuttle bay called in. "Tom. Is every thing OK? Why are you still in orbit" Tom cleared his throat, "Ahem. I was...having a problem with my...landing struts." "Your shuttle doesn't have landing struts." "Oh...Ok...Problem fixed...I'm on my way down then to deposit Miss Hernandez on the planets surface for Rest and Relaxation." He looked over his shoulder at her and smiled. She giggled and Tom made the funny face with his nose scrunched up.
Ten Minuet later Tom returned the shuttle to the bay, and headed to the pilots lounge to wait for more people to show up ready for R-N-R. "Hot Coffie..Black..no sugar." He sat at a table with a funny smile on his face, watching the cargo bee's come in and out of the bay doors and disappear down a Cargo Bay access alley way.
