Nathan appeared to be about to open his mouth and start talking when the communications chime went off. "Sorry lieutenant, I should get this" Alex apologized. Nathan nodded stiffly and the Captain swiftly acknowledged the comm.
"Raven, this is Admiral Magellan. My yard superintendant has just informed me that repair and resupply for the Raven is now complete. You have your clearance to leave Assailant. Magellan out."
"Thank you Admiral." Alex closed the channel, then tapped his comm badge. "Commander Trek, Admiral Magellan has just informed me that repair and resupply is complete and we have our clearance to leave. Please get the ship out of Assailant and on course to Sector 53. Dixon out."
<Commander Trek>
"Sorry about that, lieutenant. I believe that I was asking you about those marks on your face."
<Nathan Harper>
(OOC Sorry about the abrupt thread change, but the Raven has been invited to participate in a group mission that might start in a few weeks. If we're to have any chance of joining, I thought that we should get this mission started as soon as possible. This is our new mission thread.)

"Commander Trek, Admiral Magellan has just informed me that repair and resupply is complete and we have our clearance to leave. Please get the ship out of Assailant and on course to Sector 53. Dixon out." Dan immediately sat down in the Captain's chair, and tapped the ship-wide comm.
"Bridge to all hands. Report to your stations and prepare for departure. All Starbase personnel, please disembark immediately. You have 5 minutes. Commander Zoarial, please report to the Bridge."
A few minutes later, Zoarial came onto the Bridge. He sat down at his station. Noting this, Dan said. "Helm, take us out of dock, 1/4 Impulse. Once we have cleared Spacedock, set course for Sector 53, Warp 5."
While he was doing that, Brine came onto the Bridge. "May I join you?" he said, walking down to the Command level.
"Certainly, brother. Have a seat," Dan said, indicating the guest chair to his left Dan himself has installed before the last mission.
As Brine sat down, Zoarial said "Ready, sir."
"Take us out, Mr Zoarial," Dan said.

Nathan was extremely relieved when the chime went off. It meant delaying the explanation for a few short minutes. However less than a minute later Captain Dixon turned back to Nathan. "Sorry about that, lieutenant. I believe that I was asking you about those marks on your face." He said. Nathan sighed. Truth? Lie? Truth? Lie? He had not expected this to come up at all. A lot of latinum had been payed for this treatment, all for nothing in the long run... "Lieutenant?" Alex said, looking concerned at the expression Nathan was pulling. Kind of a cross between pain and anger... "I'm sorry Captain. It is rather a long story. Do you have the time now?" He asked. <TAG Captain Dixon> (I apologise for the short post. A long one is coming up, have no fear )

Zoarial was muttering under his breath while he punched in the keycombination to take the Raven out of the spacedock. Would it not already be a perfect time to test the system? At least they were still in the starbase. Should anything go wrong, help was a mere second away.
But Zoarial didn't want to start this mission off complaining, maybe he was just a bit agitated about this partial klingon woman who lectured him. Although Zoarial wasn't that proud of it that sometimes his klingon aggressiveness slipped through. He had been perfectly capable of hiding it, up till the other day. While the ship slowly slided through the door, Zoarial hoped that this would only be a single incident, because he didn't feel that the Raven was in need of a rampaging klingon aboard.
Slowly the Raven drifted away from the spacedock, so Zoarial decided to enter the coordinates of sector 53. Finding no difficulties whatsoever, and suppressing a big yawn, Zoarial got a message from the starbase that he was now outside of the perimeters, so he switched on the warp drive. With no complaints from engineering, Zoarial sat back in his chair, watching the sight of a ship going in warp, something that had amazed him every single time, but became slightly boring too.
Zoarial didn't really know why he felt a bit lifeless, maybe he regretted that he would lose part of his job, although it was a boring part.
"Course and speed set commander Trek, it shouldn't take us that long to arrive at our destination." Zoarial reported, and waited for further orders.

"I'm sorry Captain. It is rather a long story. Do you have the time now?" Nathan asked. "Yes lieutenant, I have the time now. I recall reading your personel profile and it mentions that your race is human, yet it's obvious that you have the blood of another race in you. I'm curious as to how you've managed to hide this from Starfleet for so long" Alex said. (OK Nathan, let's hear it. )

Nathan had been hoping that Captain Dixon hadn't got the time to listen to Nathan's story, however apparantly he did. Well there really was no lie for this one, it would have to be the truth.
He took a deep breath and immediately began to rattle it off. He was probably in some amount of trouble but his mother more so...
"I suppose it makes sense to start at the beginning." Nathan said. "However, I need a certainty here Captain." Nathan said.
"Go on." Alex replied, showing no sign of emotion.
"That my mother will not be arrested."
If Captain Dixon was shocked by this statement then he did not show it.
"I can not, and will not gaurentee anything Lieutenant, but right now I do need an explanation."
Nathan was prepared to stand up and walk out there and then. Leave Starfleet and hide away again but then he could never be of any help to his family...
"My mother met my father at a Festival of Trade on Mars, this was about three years before I was born." He started. "She had never seen anyone of his race before and was intrigued, much of the history that linked humans and my fathers species had been kept hidden away. Protected you might say. Well, you can figure out for yourself that they fell in love and married. Three years later I was born, with these markings." Nathan said motioning to his forehead and along the side of his neck. "At first my parents were happy that I showed signs of the two species, they thought that I would grow up to be a diplomat between our two peoples. Perhaps making way for a more sustained peace and communications. However, their relationship did not last. My father was arrested on charges of treason and my mother was taken to an institute on Jupiter Station to see if anything had been 'done' to her. I was then taken into care and did not see my mother again until I was six. By this time my markings had become more obvious and it was apparant that I had recieved more of my fathers genes than my mothers. For one thing I was stronger and faster than most of the adults at the care home where I was living. On my sixth birthday my mother came to pick me up, I never found out where she had been all that time and she would not tell me where my father had been taken and to this day I still dont know."
Nathan paused but Captain Dixon showed no signs of intrupting so he continued.
"I lived with my mother for 6 years until it became obvious that I was experiencing a hard time at school because of the markings. She withdrew me from that school and we moved but not before we made a trip to an Andorian who lived in South America. He informed my mother that for a price I could recieve medication that level out my skin, effectively removing the markings without surgery. However, the price was high and it was of course an illegal operation. I never found out how my mother got enough latinum for the medication but she did and within three days of the first injection my markings had dissapeared and since that day i have been injecting myself with 3 hyposprays daily until today. It appears that the medication no longer works and whatever sacrifices my mother made were in vain."
Nathan stopped. He had nothing more to say but he knew what question was coming.
"Nathan, you have yet to tell me what species your father was." Alex said.
"I would of thought it would of been obvious Sir." He replied, bitterness clear in his voice. It was not bitterness towards Dixon, but bitterness towards his very heritage.
"Sir, my father was of the Primate Xindi."

"Course and speed set commander Trek, it shouldn't take us that long to arrive at our destination." Zoarial reported.
"Thank you, Mr Zoarial." He tapped the comm-circuit. "Bridge to Engineering. Mr Joktel, bring the Autopilot system online."
"Yes sir," came the reply by the familiar voice. Dan had to admit, hearing Joktel's reply over the comm instead of in person like usual. "Autopilot engaged."
"Excellent. Mr Zoarial, alter our lateral heading by 2 degrees," he called to his slightly bored-looking Helmsman.
"Sir? That will take us significantly off course." Zoarial replied.
"I know that, but there is a known gravitational eddy in the direction. We're testing our Autopilot. Stay sharp, Commander. If the system fails, you'll need to pull us away from it yourself."
"Testing our new system, Commander?" came the Captain's voice.
Dan turned, and he and Harper were coming out of the Ready Room. "Yes sir. I thought a little gravitational eddy would be a good, relatively safe trial for it," Dan said, as he moved over to the First Officer's chair. Alex sat down, and Dan chuckled slightly, looking at him sitting there, flanked on either side by men twice his size.
The turbolift door opened. Joktel came onto the Bridge, and went and sat down at the Engineering station. "I wanted to see this thing in action, and thought this would be the best to do that."

Alex's eyes narrowed slightly as Nathan made his admission of being a Xindi/Human. He had done the required Academy Starfleet history classes and did remember the references to the Xindi. They had initiated a war against Earth just after the beginning of interstellar exploration had started. They had been duped by a group known as the Guardians, who for reasons of their own had told the Xindi that Humans were going to destroy them. It had started a war that had cost many lives on both sides and nearly brought humans to extinction.
However, that had been over 500 years ago, and the Xindi had been heard from rarely since. Alex hadn't even heard of the Xindi until he had come to Starfleet. Humanity had been in a large number of brutal conflicts since against the Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans, Borg, Dominion and many, many others.
Well, lieutenant, that's a very interesting story. I'm sorry to hear about your mother and father. I'm not aware of any other Xindi in Starfleet at the present time, and your being half-Xindi doesn't concern me too much" Alex stated. He paused for a second, then continued. "What does concern me, however, is your ability to hide this fact from Starfleet. I have read your record. It states that you are human. By regulation, I am required to report this to Starfleet Command. In the meantime, I want you to report to Sickbay for a full medical workup. And you will explain how you managed to hide this for so long to Dr. BeTor. Have I made myself clear, Lt. Harper?"
<Nathan>
"Good. Dismissed." Alex waited until Harper left the room, then tapped his comm badge. "Dixon to Lt. BeTor. Nathan Harper is on his way to Sickbay. I want him given the most complete physical that you can give. The lieutenant will explain when he gets there."
<Dr. BeTor>
Alex closed the channel and sat back in his chair. The problems this was going to cause Lt. Harper went beyond his ability to keep track of.

Nathan had always thought that if he had ever ended up telling anyone about his past it would be a comforting and liberating feeling... right now he felt awkward and stangely imprisoned, imprisoned in his own thoughts and emotions.
Nathan payed no attention to his journey to Sickbay and got there without evern noticing.
"You must be Lieutenant Harper." A female Doctor said. "I am Doctor BeTor. We met briefly at the dinner."
Nathan snapped out of his dream-like state and looked at the officer that had adressed him.
"Captain Dixon sent me down here for a complete physical." Nathan said gloomily. "Where do you need me?" He asked.

OOC: I’m afraid I don’t know too much about Xindi-Primates nor could I find a lot of information on them, so I used both what I’ve read and a little artistic license here. If you know anything that I’ve written here to be wrong then please let me know and I’ll edit as appropriate. More details to follow when I talk to the Captain (hint hint).
IC: "Dixon to Lt. BeTor. Nathan Harper is on his way to Sickbay. I want him given the most complete physical that you can give. The lieutenant will explain when he gets there."
Startled, E’Liana replied. “Acknowledged, sir”
Deciding that it was a rather odd request, E’Liana looked up Nathan Harper in the medical records. However, her search seemed rather unsatisfactory as nothing appeared out of the ordinary with him.
~I guess I’ll just have to wait and see~ She mused.
“Joy, could you come here for a moment please?” The Nurse came out of the Office. “Since Mr Anderson is off duty now, I would like your help with a physical please. I’ve been asked to perform an extensive physical on a Mr Harper but I can’t do all the tests on my own as I need them all to be set up. So while I do the rudimentary scans could you set up some of the more complex tests please?”
She heard the doors swish open and admit who she could only assume was Mr Harper. However, he looked about as human as she did. Hiding her surprise, she cleared her throat and walked up to him, tricorder in hand.
"You must be Lieutenant Harper." She said. "I am Doctor BeTor. We met briefly at the dinner."
Nathan snapped out of his dream-like state and looked at the officer that had addressed him.
"Captain Dixon sent me down here for a complete physical." Nathan said gloomily. "Where do you need me?" He asked. She pointed to the biobed.
The man sat down and kicked his legs against the bed like a small child.
“Ok, so I’m going to ask you a few questions about the…discrepancies…in your medical file.” Harper looked up, surprised. “I’ve already looked up your file you see. It says that you are fully human but you’ll forgive me when I say that I don’t think that’s the case.”
Nathan nodded. “My father is a Xindi-Primate.” He said simply.
E’Liana looked alarmed but refrained from commenting, other than. “ah. Well, let’s get on shall we? So your mother is human and your father is Xindi. I personally am not aware of hybrids of that nature although cross-cultural children were a minor of mine at the Academy. Have you been told of any others like yourself or are you the first?”
<Tag Nathan>
“Aha, well that’s interesting. Ok, so on with the tests.”
She scanned him with a tricorder. “I’m afraid I have hardly any knowledge of Xindi physiology, so I’m going to have to rely on what you and the computer tells me. Excuse me.” She went into the Office and downloaded the information about Xindi-Primate’s onto a PADD and went back outside.
“The information I have here is somewhat limited but I’ll see what I can do.” She scanned him again, checking his vital signs for any differences. “Your heart rate seems somewhat accelerated but from what it says here on my PADD that can be expected from Xindi Primates. I’m also going to allow for apprehension here.” She added.
“I’m going to use the pulmonary scanner. It’s nothing to worry about, all it does is monitor your blood content and various other pulmonary readings. However, due to its sensitive nature you’ll have to lie down and keep still okay? I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
<Tag Nathan - if you want to add your thoughts and feelings etc>
After various scans and pokes and prods, E’Liana and Joy had compiled a detailed report of their new hybrid crewmate. “Well, we’re all done for now. However, I haven’t yet shown this to Captain Dixon. I’m going to speak to him now. Everything seems to be fine as far as I can tell. However, there seems to be traces of some sort of chemical In your system? I assume it was to hide the ridges?”
<Tag Nathan (again)>
“Well I can tell you that your body has now adapted to the chemical, and I suggest you stop using it incase it now has negative side effects. I don’t see why it would really but you never know. Also, you may suffer from some withdrawal as your body was dependant on it for quite some time. If you feel you need some medical intervention then please come by ok?” Anyway, the Captain didn’t say if you were fit for duty or not but I can’t see why not so why don’t we go to the bridge together?”

"Commander Trek, Commander Zoarial, could you both step into the Ready Room for a moment?" Alex said aloud. He waited for a moment or two until both officers stepped in, looking at him expectantly.
"Lt. Harper has just informed me that he is half Xindi." Zoarial looked at Dixon in a puzzled way. "They are a race that humans had a war with just after earth started exploring the galaxy. They brought humanity to the brink of extinction before things were figured out. The new markings on his face are the result of the cross breeding."
"But why did they just become obvious today? I don't think that I've ever seen them before" Trek asked.
Alex sighed. "Because he has been taking injections that he obtained illegally to supress the genetic markers of the Human-Xindi mix. He must have been the target of racial slurs when he was much younger."
Both Treks' and Zoarial's eyes had widened with this revelation, but Alex went on. "I don't think that Harper had any real negative intentions with what he has done. I'm more concerned now with the way that Starfleet is going to react. He's been hiding this since he enlisted, for 10 years or more, successfully from Starfleet Medical. I think that with our recent experience from the Changelings will cause some distress at Starfleet. Any opinions?"

"I know no others like me, Humans and Xindi were nearly at war around 2150, my parents producing offspring was an unlikely match indeed."
Nathan sat very still on the bio-bed, a lot had happened in the last hour or so and he was still trying to process it all. Would his mother be prosecuted? If he could accept responsobility instead of her then he would, she hadn't been the same since Nathan entered Starfleet, something had changed.
After various scans and pokes and prods, E’Liana and Joy had compiled a detailed report of their new hybrid crewmate.
"Well, we’re all done for now. However, I haven’t yet shown this to Captain Dixon. I’m going to speak to him now. Everything seems to be fine as far as I can tell. However, there seems to be traces of some sort of chemical In your system? I assume it was to hide the ridges?"
Nathan nodded. " I have been injecting myself with three compounds daily since I was around 12, I have no idea how they worked but they masked my ridges."
"Well I can tell you that your body has now adapted to the chemical, and I suggest you stop using it incase it now has negative side effects. I don’t see why it would really but you never know. If you feel you need some medical intervention then please come by ok?” Anyway, the Captain didn’t say if you were fit for duty or not but I can’t see why not so why don’t we go to the bridge together?"
"Well I am sure that I can return to duty, let's go up to the bridge and see shall we?" Nathan said.
The two officers left together and walked to the bridge in silence. Nathan felt like he had nothing to say and silence had never bothered him.
Soon the two of them arrived on the bridge and Nathan took his post, noticing that Alex, Dan and Zoarial were not on the Bridge.

"Any opinions?" Alex asked, after this shocking revelation.
"That, although illegal, the doctor responsible for this treatment was quite brilliant, able to hide such distinctive features for so long. Although obviously his work was somewhat flawed, or didn't take all factors into account when designing the chemical, as his body as grown accustomed to it," Dan said.
Alex and Zoarial's faces each had a quizzical look, as if surprised that Dan was choosing to focus on the treatment itself rather than its ramifications.
"Sorry, just the scientist in me I guess. I will admit, I have my reservations about this new development. My own race have had disputes about the Xindi as well, though not nearly to the extent that Earth had to deal with, though a Xindi-Aquatic cruiser was responsible for the destruction of a sizable fleet just under 200 years ago."
"How do you think Starfleet will react to all this though, Commander?" Alex asked, reasserting the previous question.
Dan sighed. "None too positively, that's for sure. As his superiors, we should try to advocate his position. After all, he has served this ship well in his time as CTSO, brief as it has been so far. He guarded me well right after the Vampire incident. And though it was to my annoyance at the time, he performed his duty to the best of his ability."
He saw Alex's discomfort at the mention of the incident. It was quite understandable, as Dan and Alex had opponents for its majority. He had uncomfortable around Dan for quite a while afterwards.
"The point is, we should do our best to prevent him being dismissed from service, or worse, imprisoned."

He was sweating, and not just the usual amount caused when he was working hard on repairing something. At that moment, Nathan was on his back and attempting to take off the back of his console, his scans had shown him that one of the targeting sensor chips needed replacing. However, instead of being able to just take off the panel Nathan found his hands shaking and as a result he was getting more and more frustrated. Eventually he managed to remove the panel but removing the damaged chip was another matter.
After several failed attempts Nathan eventually managed to replace the spent chip but as he stood up he became extremely dizzy. The Bridge began to spin around him and the shaking intensified, but it soon stopped as fast as it had started.
Nathan shook his head and rubbed his eyes, using the sleeve of his uniform to wipe his damp forehead. He composed himself and continued working, hoping that no one had picked up on what had just happened...

Alex noted Zoarial's unusual silence. Usually his Chief Navigation Officer had something to say, but not on this subject, it seemed.
"I agree Dan. Nathan has been an excellent security officer to this point, and if he were a Xindi spy and his cover was blown, I imagine that he would have found a way off of the ship." Alex paused. "On the other hand, we can't be too careful, and I imagine that Starfleet isn't going to be happy about the situation. I think that we should put up some protection around our vital systems, like Engineering and Navigation. That way, if Nathan is a threat, or if his getting off of this drug has negative side effects, we'll have some defence against his clearances, and I'll have something cautious to say to Starfleet. Can the two of you quietly initiate that?"
The two commanders nodded positively, so Alex indicated that the meeting was over. The three of them left the ready room and stepped onto the bridge. It was humming along in its' usual, efficient manner. Alex eyes automatically went to the tactical station. To his surprise, Nathan was at his post, and he didn't look very well. Dr. BeTor was also on the bridge and it was clear that she was also keeping an eye on the Tactical officer out of the corner of her eye. He was about to say something, then decided against it. Medical wasn't his strength. That's why he had a doctor. He was glad that E'Liana was here keeping an eye on things.
"Joktel, how's the test going?" he asked the Chief Engineer.
The man shrugged. "Everything proceeding normally. There's nothing to report so far."
"Good" Alex replied, then checked the time. "Commander Trek, I see that it's still your shift. I'm going down to the mess hall."
Trek nodded and Alex boarded the turbolift.

E’Liana noticed Nathan shaking slightly and noted that he looked rather hot and flustered. She briefly considered asking him if he was alright but decided against it for the time being. So far, E’Liana had her rather limited medical report on Mr Harper, but needed to both discuss this with the Captain and Starfleet Medical. She had requested more information about the Xindi from Starfleet Medical, conveniently forgetting to mention the reason for her request. She did not wish to alarm anyone before the Captain was ready.
She had left Joy in Sickbay with the task of examining samples of blood from Mr Harper in the hopes of discovering the reason behind the sudden adaptation to the medication, as well as any other possible information about the Xindi
E’Liana’s ‘task’ had been to keep an eye on Nathan. She had not asked him to wear a Neurocortical monitor as she knew he would not consent to it, seeing as he felt isolated at the moment because of his facial features. However, E’Liana failed to see what the fuss was about. Yes, he was half-Xindi and yes, the Federation had in the past had disagreements with them, but so what? The same was true with almost every culture, including her own. And that was a far more recent conflict…
Deciding that such musings would get her nowhere, and noticing that he had paled somewhat, she walked up to Nathan.
“Mr Harper? How are you feeling?”
He looked at her wairily, but she feigned ignorance of what had just occurred. “I’m…fine.”
She smiled. ~I guess I can give it a shot…~ “I would like you to wear a Neurocortical monitor, if that’s alright? All it does is monitor your vital signs for any improvement. As I don’t know what you’ve been taking, and therefore I don’t know how you will react I think it’s best. Also, do you have any of the drug left? I need to analyse it if it is at all possible…”

"Commander Trek, I see that it's still your shift. I'm going down to the mess hall."
Dan nodded. "Aye sir," he said, and Alex left the Bridge.
Dan once again sat in the Captain's chair. Brine leaned over. "What was all that about?" he asked in a low voice.
"I'll tell you later," Dan whispered, then straightened. "Mr Zoarial, how long until we hit the gravitational eddy assuming the Autopilot does not take over?"
Zoarial checked his console. "Approximately two minutes, sir."
"Excellent. Keep sharp, Commander. We don't want to actually fall into this eddy. Mr. Harper, open a comm-channel to Commander Szalai at Starbase Assailant. Route the visual to the Engineering station," he said.
After a moment, Harper said "Aye, sir." After a few minutes, Szalai's face appeared at the console, looking at Joktel. Dan came over.
"Commander Joktel, what can I do for you? Any problems with the Autopilot?" Szalai asked. He then saw Dan. "Ah, Commander. How goes the test."
"Just fine, Imre. That's why I called you. We're just about to test it for the first time. We're headed straight for a gravitational eddy."
"Ten seconds to eddy," Zoarial said. Then noting a change in readings. "The autopilot is altering course to avoid the eddy.....We've cleared it."
"Excellent," Dan said. "Restore our original course. Take us to Sector 53. Well, Imre, looks like it worked."
"Glad to hear it," Szalai said, smiling. "Let me know how the rest of it goes."
"Will do," Dan said. "Raven out."

Nathan’s hand was shaking again, he presses it against his console in the vain attempt that this would stop it.
He looked up as Dr. BeTor approached him, he glanced at her and then continued to work.
“Mr Harper. How are you feeling?” She asked.
She must’ve seen what just happened. He thought to himself. “I’m fine.” He said warily.
“I would like you to wear a Neurocortical monitor, if that’s alright? All it does is monitor your vital signs for any improvement. As I don’t know what you’ve been taking, and therefore I don’t know how you will react I think it’s best. Also, do you have any of the drug left? I need to analyse it if it is at all possible…”
Nathan frowned. If it was just there to monitor his vital signs then that was all very well but what if it wasn’t? What if it was part of an elaborate plan to get him unconscious… or worse kill him?
He shook himself. Paranoia was not something that Nathan usually experienced. He assumed it was because he was withdrawing from the drug.
“I will consent to the Neurocortical monitor, only if I too get to see the results that it displays.” Nathan said.

“Very well, and yes I do have some of the medication left. At least three hyposprays - will that be sufficient?” He asked.
<TAG Dr. BeTor>
“Well I have one hypospray on me. The other two are in my quarters. Here.” He said reaching into his pockets and pulling out the spray. “This is it.”
<TAG Dr. BeTor>
"Excellent. Keep sharp, Commander. We don't want to actually fall into this eddy. Mr. Harper, open a comm-channel to Commander Szalai at Starbase Assailant. Route the visual to the Engineering station," Dan said.
It took a moment for Nathan to realise it was he who was being spoken to. “Aye Sir.” He said tapping a few buttons on his console.
After he had done that he turned to Dr. BeTor. “When do you need to fit the monitor?” He asked.

Alex was headed down the corridor toward the messhall when the door to that room opened a puzzled looking Andorian walked out. He looked back over his shoulder as the door closed.
"What's the problem Crewman Walz?" Alex asked.
The Andorian turned his puzzled expression towards Alex. "Berraine is acting a little odd. She asked me if I had managed to hide the disruptor shipment. I'm a fusion generator technician."
"Maybe she was joking, crewman. Carry on." The Andorian nodded and went on his way, while Alex walked into the messhall.
It was uncharacteristically empty. There was usually at least a few people here. Berraine was behind the main serving area, stirring a large steaming pot of something. It didn't smell very good.
Alex walked up to the serving area, selected a bowl and spoon from the pile and stood in front of Berraine. She looked up and said "Good food today, we managed to catch some marons" as she dumped a ladle of the stuff into his bowl. Some slopped over the side and onto the counter. She leaned towards him to clean it up with a filthy rag. "Cardassian supply convoy" she whispered. "Ravine Road. Two o'clock. Disruptors in the usual place. Be ready." She leaned back casually while Alex stared at her in surprise. What did that mean?, he thought.
As he stood there confused, Berraine twitched her head to the left and looked over at the chairs, as if she were telling him to sit but was afraid someone would overhear. Shrugging he walked over to a table and sat, facing the serving area so he could watch what she was up to. Berraine returned to stirring her pot, occasionally looking up and moving her lips as though she was speaking to someone in front of her.
Suddenly, a door swished open and Ensign Williams from Engineering walked in with a PADD in his hand. He glanced over at Berraine as if checking how she was doing, then looked at Alex with satisfaction and said "Ah, there you are Cap..."
Williams was interrupted by Berraine screaming the word "CARDASSIANS!!" at the top of her lungs. He and Alex jerked their attention to the serving area, where Berraine had efficiently launched a large, heavy looking metal bowl at the Ensign. They were both caught completely off guard and Alex could do nothing except watch as the bowl hit Williams precisely in the middle of his forehead, causing a metallic bong sound. The force of the impact knocked Williams off balance and backwards towards the wall, where the back of his head met the solid duranium. Williams fell to the floor.
A blur of movement caused Alex to look back over at Berraine. With a dexterity he hadn't thought possible of her, she leaped over the serving area counter and ran out the other door.
Alex rushed over to fallen man. He was looking around groggily, blood oozing out of the front and back of his head. Alex tapped his comm badge and snapped "Yellow alert. Medical and security teams to the crew messhall. Find and detain Berraine."
Gently, Alex placed his hands over the Engineers' two injuries and applied pressure. Then, having nothing else to do besides wonder what the heck was going on with his cook, he waited for help to arrive.

Zoarial had carefully listened to everything Nathan had said, but didn't really understand what all the fuss was about. After all Nathan was still as Nathan as he was before, and there seemed to be no threat at all... why it should be a problem to contact starfleet about the slight error, and just get his record adjusted and get it over with.
But before Zoarial could vent his thoughts, it already seemed that the meeting was over. So he went back to the bridge. The testing of the gelpack was in a crucial stage now, since Zoarial had only seconds to act himself if the gelpack didn't avoid the eddie.
Luckily it did, and while Zoarial expected that the maneuver would adjust the course back to it's original setting, the ship just went a completely new course.
"Autopilot is altering course to avoid the eddy," Zoarial said, and added after a couple of seconds, "We've cleared it but we are now on a completely different heading commander Trek."
"Excellent," Dan said. "Restore our original course"
"Affirmative," Zoarial responded, "I'll make a report about the inconvenience and send it back to the starbase."
It didn't take that long for Zoarial to finish the gelpack malfunction report. It seemed that he was at that moment unable to send it from the bridge, so he had to find another subspace transmitter. He glanced at the readings to make sure that it was okay to leave the bridge and went through the doors to send the report.
All of a sudden the lights grew dim and Alex' voice could be heard through the corridors. "Yellow alert. Medical and security teams to the crew messhall. Find and detain Berraine"
This message came only a split second too late, because Zoarial was at that moment knocked over by a female crewmember which he didn't recognize.
=/\=Zoarial to captain Dixon, I have just located our fugitive on the flightdeck, I am waiting for your instructions sir.=/\= Zoarial immediately reported when he finally got up again.

"Yellow alert. Medical and security teams to the crew messhall. Find and detain Berraine," came the Captain's voice.
Dan stood immediately. "Where is Berraine now?"
Harper checked the sensors. "She's on the turbolift, and it's going up, sir. It just past Deck 5."
"I thought Berraine had been in the Mess Hall. She must have been moving fast. Stop the turbolift, Mr Joktel," Dan ordered.
"Aye sir," he said, executing the instructions. "I've got it stopped at Deck 3," he said.
"Mr Harper, I want an armed Security detail on Deck 3, yourself included. Brine, join me. I could use your input on Berraine's state of mind," Dan said. Grabbing a phaser, he started towards the other turbolift.
"Do you think that's necessary?" Brine asked, indicating the phaser as he followed him. "She's just a cook as I recall."
"Yes, but we both now what zthr does to the Vochai. We have no idea what to expect from Berraine's behavior," he said as they stepped into the turbolift. "Deck 3."
A few minutes later, the door opened on Deck 3, and they went around to the other turbolift shaft. Brine stopped a few meters from it. After a moment, he said, "Her mind is erratic, confused.. Her response to the zthr is not unlike that of a Vochai given a mild dose. She's also paranoid, and angry. Most likely the result of being confined like this."
In the intervening time, the rest of Harper's security team had arrived, armed with phaser rifles. Dan tapped his commbadge. "Trek to Captain Dixon. I've got Berraine contained in a turbolift on Deck 3. According to Brine, she's confused, and angry. I've got an armed security team with me. How do you want me to proceed?"

=^= Yellow alert. Medical and security teams to the crew messhall. Find and detain Berraine =^=
This took Nathan by surprise. Nathan could have sworn that Berraine was the ships cook...
BeTor exited the bridge, obviously to gather her medical team together.
"Where is Berraine now?" Dan said standing up.
Nathan pressed a few buttons, checking the sensors.
Nathan used the sensors to give him Berraine's medical readout. Elevated pulse and stress levels... what was going on here?
"Mr Harper, I want an armed Security detail on Deck 3, yourself included. Brine, join me. I could use your input on Berraine's state of mind," Dan said. Grabbing a phaser, he started towards the other turbolift.
Nathan moved to the back of the Bridge and entered in his security code. Withdrawing from a cabinet at the back one Type 2 Phaser Rifle. It was an over precaution but when did he get to use one of these?
He tapped his comm badge. "Harper to security detail 2, meet myself, Commander Trek and General Brine on Deck 3 besides turbolift 4A. Arm yourselves and be prepared for resistance, have the rifles set to stun and stun only."
Nathan knew that security detail 2 was more than a little trigger happy but team 1 were off duty at the moment.
Nathan, Dan and Brine entered the turbolift and were soon stepping onto deck 3. It was a shot walk to the shaft where the halted turbolift lay and soon after Security detail 2 joined them.
While Nathan was informing his team of the situation Dan contacted the Captain. Nathan positioned three security officers by the door, including himself. The other three were to stay about 10 foot back, just in case... He knew he was over-preparing for this but in some ways it gave the Security detail a good practice, organising strike and capture practices on a starship was often difficult.
"Commander Trek." Nathan called. "The security team is ready. How do you wish us to proceed?" He asked.

“I will consent to the Neurocortical monitor, only if I too get to see the results that it displays.” Nathan said.
Thinking that this request was a little strange, but valid nevertheless, she agreed. “You do of course have the right to, although I should warn you that there will be a slight delay in the reading you will receive as I have to patch them down from sickbay…”
“Very well, and yes I do have some of the medication left. At least three hyposprays - will that be sufficient?” He asked.
“It should be, for now at least…”
“Well I have one hypospray on me. The other two are in my quarters. Here.” He said reaching into his pockets and pulling out the spray. “This is it.”
She looked at it, holding it up to the light and sqinted her eyes. ~Interesting…~ “Thank you Lieutenant. This shall be very useful.”
E’Liana listened as the Bridge crew got on with their work, although felt she should stay a little longer. After all the discussion was finished, Nathan turned to her and asked. “When do you need to fit the monitor?”
“I can bring it down here and ask Nurse Joy to check that it’s being linked up to Sickbay properly or you can come up to sickbay when you’re ready, whatever is easiest.”
<TAG Lt Harper>
The next thing she knew, the lights had gone down and a yellow glow had covered the room.
=/\= "Yellow alert. Medical and security teams to the crew messhall. Find and detain Berraine." =/\=
E’Liana made her way out of the Bridge, and to the messhall, calling Sickbay as she went.
“Joy, get Anderson in Sickbay. I need you to join me in the messhall with a medkit as soon as possible, I assume you heard the announcement?”
“Yes Doctor, I’ll be there soon. Packer out.”
E’Liana got to Sickbay and saw the commotion. “What’s happened?” She asked, approaching the injured man with her tricorder in hand, glad she had needed to check up on Nathan.
“Berraine has been showing signs of some sort of reaction to the food. She thought Ensign Williams was a Cardassian and threw that at him” replied the Captain, pointing to the object in question.
“I’m afraid I can’t do too much until Joy gets here, but from what I can tell it looks worse than it is. However, - “ She rose her voice. “I need everyone who doesn’t need to be here assist to get out. Please come back later, I don’t need people crowding around me, ok?”
She looked up and saw people casting her annoyed looks as they went back to their posts. The Captain was sitting down next to the Ensign, feeling for his pulse. “Is it just me, or is this slow?” He asked. E’Liana checked herself whilst scanning the rest of him. “He’s unconscious and yes it is rather slow but I don’t think we need to worry just yet.”
Joy came in and handed the medkit to the Doctor. “How can I help?” She asked.
“Can you sort him out while I go with the Captain to search for the cook? His injuries don’t look too bad, do you think you can handle it?”
Joy looked at her patient and the readings and nodded. “Of course, but shouldn’t you do this?”
“I need to find Berraine and find out what’s wrong before she hurts someone else. If she thinks there are Cardassian’s on the ship she may hurt more people. I need to make sure that this is just a reaction to that food first…when Ensign Williams is stable beam him to Sickbay and keep an eye on him there whilst looking at Harper’s medication.” She handed Joy the hypospray. “I’ll be back in a little while, I’m sorry to dump this all on you two.”
The Captain meanwhile had got up, looking concerned. “You think Berraine could injure someone else?”
“I don’t know, but we didn’t think she would attack anyone at all. Right now, I’m as clueless as you…”

Alex sat with Ens. Williams as Raven crew members made their way in to the messhall. After about a minute, Dr. BeTor showed up as well. She quickly got things in the room organized and did a quick examination of Williams. She seemed to think that he was alright and handed him off to Nurse Packer for transport to Sickbay, then communicated her concern for Berraine to the Captain.
Just as he stood up, a message came in. "Trek to Captain Dixon. I've got Berraine contained in a turbolift on Deck 3. According to Brine, she's confused, and angry. I've got an armed security team with me. How do you want me to proceed?"
Alex thought for a second about what Dr. Betor had said to him regarding Berraine's condition then answered. "I'd like you to detain her using the gentlest means possible. Make sure that she doesn't hurt herself or anyone else. The doctor and I are making our way there now. Dixon out."
He looked at BeTor. "Standard security protocols for this situation require that the turbolifts be locked. We're going to have to climb to Deck 3." She nodded and they proceeded to the nearest emergency access ladder. "As long as we have a few minutes, could you update me on Mr. Harper?"
