"He is fine, right now he's on the bridge. He just had some back trouble which should heal soon enough...but that's not the point. I need an explanation as to why you kept the drugs from us...we need them to clear your name. If or when Starfleet find out about your past, they will want many explanations, one from me as your CMO. If I am to defend you I need to know as much as possible and your recent behaviour has done nothing to commend you..."
Nathan looked at his feet. This was odd. He never felt shame, or guilt. They were wasted emotions in his eyes. However, right now, he felt both. Very strongly. But there was something else there as well, an anger.
"My recent behaviour is due to the withdrawal or lack there of a highly addictive drug Doctor. You are the medic here, surely you are aware of that." He said rudely.
<TAG BeTor>
"I kept the drugs from you Doctor because I was addicted, you surely understand that word don't you? If you don't then perhaps I should seek the help of another medical proffesional."
<TAG BeTor>
The anger within Nathan was reaching boiling point. He didn't have to be spoken to like this, nor would he except it.
"I will be returning to duty within the hour Doctor. Thank you kindly for your help."
<TAG BeTor>
"And how are you going to stop me Mongrel?!" He yelled, his voice raising higher and higher towards the end of the sentence.
<TAG BeTor>
Nathan stormed out of the office and the promptly out of Sickbay. Very aware of how foolish he must look in the patients outfit.
"What was that all about...?" He muttered to himself. He looked at his hand and frowned at the shaking.
It was getting worse...

"Can anyone think of anything else that we can do for now?" Alex asked, and slowly, Zoarial began forming some sentences in his mind. He had been following the whole conversation, not quite sure whether he had something to say because all the talking was greek to him.
" I have an idea, it is just a draft sir, but with some carefull thoughts it might be worth trying. I started thinking after you made that remark about " The Brain" having to be the size of a freighter... Why not... Offer the brain to transfer it to another ship, giving it full capacity to grow. I guess that we have to let it think... that it will be more capable of furfilling it's duty: defending the Raven.... when it is in the other ship... Am I making any sense?" Zoarial asked, hoping that his train of thought wasn't too foggy.
<Alex>
"Furthermore, if we say to the brain that it will have a better chance of survival when transferred to the other ship, it will have more advantages than disadvantages."
At this moment Zoarial's head started pounding, he was very proud of his own idea, but he realized that it would be wiped off the table if he didn't give it some body.
" I can of a way to let it believe that it is in danger on this ship... We would have to inject an artificial virus into the system thus harming "The Brain"'s existence here on board. " Zoarial said, realizing that if they did that, they might lose the brain, together with the rest of their computer systems.

"I'm not sure whether we could pull off the virus idea with the Brain noticing, but I like where Zoarial's going with the ship idea," Dan commented.
"This about it!" Dan continued. "Take the Brain, and put it in a smaller tactical ship, like a Defiant class. Take away the need for Life Support, Environmental systems, and you've freed up large amounts of energy for systems like weapons, shields, deflectors. Supplement its resources with access to tactical databases, and figure out some way to make it self-repairing, and you've got a heck of a protector."
<Alex>
Brine was seemingly not paying attention. He was looking out the window. "We're moving," he said simply.
Everyone else turned to look out at the stars. They were indeed moving. Alex tapped his comm-badge. "Dixon to Bridge, whats happening?"
"We're checking our course now, sir," Arro replied.
"Most likely to obtain resources," Brine commented during the pause.
"I believe the General is right, sir," Arro responded after a minute. "We're headed for a nebula about half a lightyear away. It's loaded with deuterium."

Once the medic got done healing the burns on McLean's hands and face he went right back to work. Standing over a new station McLean started to work as fast as he could before the brain tried to protect itself again.
McLean again started his scans on the systems he had been asked to remove from the primary computer system. Each system appeared to be free of infection from the brain and McLean started the slow process of entering each subroutine through the firewall into the secondary computer core.
As McLean continued to work his mind started to wonder, entering the programs through the firewall took a decent amount of time with short down times in between subroutine entries.
McLean chucked to himself, he had been aboard the Raven for the better part of a month and he was never once noticed by the senior staff members, and now look at him, working hard with the senior staff members to solve a very complex problem.
When he left Starfleet he was almost up for his first promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade and well on his way to becoming a Chief Engineer. Now when he decided to come back it was either come back and spend a year at the Academy again, or lose his rank and start over again as an Acting Ensign. McLean could not stand the thought of going back to the Academy for another year.
"How is everything coming along Ensign?" Joktel asked bringing McLean back to his duties.
"Slowly sir." McLean replied.
"Keep up the good work." Joktel said before he left to check on Paria.
"Thank you sir. I will." McLean replied as he went back to checking his work.

Alex walked over to take a look at the navigational console. "The Brain is just using the impulse engines? It's going to take us a long time to get to that nebula at this rate. However, it's taking us away from our rendezvous with the Ptolemy."
Dan checked the Engineering console. "It hasn't established a link with the warp engines yet, but I thought that we had locked down the engines. How did the Brain manage to get control of them?"
Lt. Arro shook his head. "I have no idea, but it makes me wonder if the Brain has run an extrapolation on the rate it grows versus the time it's going to take us to get to the nebula. At full impulse, it will have filled 8 decks of the Raven by the time we get there."
Alex sat back down in his chair and looked at the navigational officer. "I think that your idea about placing the Brain on another ship has merit, Zoarial, but I'm not sure how to implement it. It would require some cooperation with the Brain, and it's pretty clear that the Brain isn't willing to give it. Also, giving it a ship with weapons might lead to more problems than it would solve."
Dan came over and sat down the First Officers chair. "What are we going to do in the meantime? If it can get control of the impulse engines, the warp engines are probably next."
"I agree" Alex nodded. "I think that it's time to get a bit more agressive in our tactics." Alex opened a line to Engineering. "Commander Joktel, I would like you to do a manual shutdown of the warp core, then remove the dilithium crystals from the reaction chamber."
There was silence from the Chief Engineering Officer, then he came back with the word "What?"
"Take the core offline, then remove the dilithium." Alex repeated patiently.
"Yes sir" Joktel said slowly, then closed the channel.
Alex sat back in his chair. "Well, that'll take the warp engines out of the picture and make sure that the Ptolemy can find us when they get here." The Captain turned to Cmdr. Trek. "Dan, we're essentially dealing with a child right now. An emerging intelligence that has a definite purpose, but no practical experience. It's kind of learning as it goes."
"Yes" Dan said cautiously.
"I think that it's time the Brain learned who's in charge." Alex turned to Lt. Collaan. "Is the Brain still getting nutrients from the transporters?"
The Bajoran nodded. "Yes sir. At about half the rate that it was before we started the diagnostic cycle."
"All right. Zoarial, use your manual over ride to change our course back to an intercept with the Ptolemy, and I don't care what you have to do to do it. Once we're back on course, let the Brain do what it wants. Collaan, when it changes course back to the nebula, I want you to tell the transporter chief to pull the transporters isolinear chip set, so that the Brain is receiving no nutrients at all. Then, I want to repeat the process a few times to see if it learns."

"Bridge to Dr. BeTor. There is an injury in Engineering but it doesn't sound too serious. Could you send someone down to take a look?"
E’Liana sighed and wondered why the injured crewman couldn’t just get themselves to sickbay…”I don’t make house calls” she scowled as she went to get Nurse Packer.
“Joy, could you go down to Engineering please, apparently a crewmember has been injured. Nothing too severe. While you’re gone I’ll keep an eye on the experiments.” The nurse nodded and grabbed a medkit.
E’Liana went back to her most irritating patient, who seemed to be having difficulties. She took a tricorder with her just in case…she momentarily considered a sedative but thought better of it.
"My recent behaviour is due to the withdrawal or lack there of a highly addictive drug Doctor. You are the medic here, surely you are aware of that." He said rudely.
“Even if your behaviour can be explained through the drug use, you are still responsible for your own actions. Also, considering the evidence, it doesn’t seem that you have been “withdrawing” from the drug…”
"I kept the drugs from you Doctor because I was addicted, you surely understand that word don't you? If you don't then perhaps I should seek the help of another medical professional."
“I have taken you off duty in order to perform tests. The hiding of the drugs cannot always be excplained through the abuse of the drugs theselves…there is of course the small fact that you are able to excuse yourself right now with very rational thought….I wonder why that is…” She glowered at him.
"I will be returning to duty within the hour Doctor. Thank you kindly for your help."
“I have informed the Captain of my decision. If you insist on attempting to go back on duty I hsall have to call security. In medical situations I can outrank the Captain if need be, although Captain Dixon seems to believe me a competent physician…if you wish to seek a second opinion then by all means do…you have a lot of spare time on your hands as you are no longer on duty.”
She could feel her anger rising, and her ridges were flushing again. The thought ~If I were fully Klingon, he would not DARE this~ kept flitting in her mind…she tried to calm down but to no avail. ~ Damn Nurse Packer…She could calm me down if she were here…~
"And how are you going to stop me Mongrel?!" He yelled, his voice raising higher and higher towards the end of the sentence.
E’Liana laughed in spite of herself. “Mongrel? A fellow half-blood is calling ME a mongrel? At least I have pride in who I am and have no need for drug abuse to quell my own fears of identity.” She stood forward and lifted her head. ~P’Tagh!~
She watched the Lieutenant storm out of the office and the promptly out of Sickbay.
She growled to herself, annoyed that she got so angry. She grabbed the sedative and ran out of Sickbay, after him.
“BeTor to security. I need your assistance…Lieutenant Harper has left Sickbay. Beware as he is ill and potentially dangerous…”

"How is everything going over there Ensign?" Joktel asked.
McLean looked up from his station and replied, "I have transfered deflector control over to the second core and I am now working on the tractor beam programs."
"That is good progress, but I need your assistance shutting down the core." Joktel said, "Come with me."
"Aye sir." McLean said stepping away from his station to follow of the Chief Engineer.
McLean watched as Paria stepped in front of his old station to keep up the work flow. McLean found it amazing that the woman was able to run both stations at the same time. I guess that is what they call hard work, McLean thought.
Stepping in front of the core Joktel began to issue orders on the shut down procedure, "Ensign I want you to head up to the second level of the core and shut down the dilithium storage safety clamps, I will shut down the reaction chamber down here. Once the chamber is down I will let you know when to release the safety clamps."
McLean nodded and headed up the nearest ladder to the second level of the engine room. Walking to the first console he began to access the programs for safety controls with in the warp core. Looking down McLean saw Joktel working hard over the console in front of him.
With in a matter of minutes the reaction chamber went cold and the hum of the warp core had faded away. McLean felt a cold feeling surround him as the color and the hum of the core stopped.
"Alright, release the clamps." Joktel said over the com channel.
"Aye sir." McLean replied.
McLean quickly followed the Chief's orders and released the safety clamps. Joktel watched as saw the clamps let go of the containment door. Joktel opened the door and quickly pulled out the slide tray with the dilithium on it. Walking with the dilithium Joktel set the precious crystals down inside his office and had a level 10 force field surround the crystals, just in case the brain tried to transport the crystals back into the chamber.
"Joktel to the bridge."
"Go ahead." Replied the bridge.
"The warp core is now offline."
<Tag Captain Dixon>
"Understood sir." Joktel said as the channel closed, "Alright Ensign good work. Lets get back to taking back the ship, shall we?"
"Sounds like a good plan to me sir." McLean replied as he walked back to his station.

Nathan had gathered himself together and was steadily running along the corridor just outside Sickbay. He wasn't going particularly fast and had no where in particular to go but he knew that if he remained there he would get caught... and there was something deep within him that told him getting caught was the ultimate wrong and he must flee that wrong until his last breath. He came to the Turbolift that would take him to his quarters where there was more drug. "But they look for me there." Nathan said in broken speach. He shook his head and thought hard. "Where won't look?" He was breathing deeply and sweating pefusely. "Warp Core control." He said to himself. He turned round and headed in the direction he came, moments later he was confronted by three security officers, all armed with hand phasers, and Dr. BeTor, armed with what looked like a sedative. "Stand down Lt." Said an Officer who Nathan recognised as Skinner from Team 3. "Aside." Nathan groaned. "Stand aside." He finished. "Stand down Lt." Skinner repeated. Nathan made what could only be described as a snarling sound and launched himself at the security officers who immediately opened fire. He felt his body go limp and then there was black. ***** Nathan awoke some time later in Sickbay. "Where am I?" He groaned. He looked at his harms and legs and saw they were tied to the bio bed he lay upon. <TAG BeTor>

Having now rescued the Captain from a turbolift and chased after a psychotic Lieutenant, E'Liana was now feeling rather tired. However, she had work to do. Whilst waiting for said Lieutenant to wake up, she worked with Nurse Packer on the results of Packer's test regarding the drugs.
The Nurse lifted her head from the microscope and tapped a few keys on a nearby console and a picture came up.
"Doctor" She said, "Could you have a look at this please?"
E'Liana looked up from a PADD she had been reading and gasped. "Those look like...borg nanoprobes? What is that a picture of? Surely not the..."
The Nurse nodded. "I'm afraid so, Doctor. It looked like this beforehand, if you'll remember, and I've confirmed my first thoughts. They are borg nanoprobes..."
The women decided to work on this for a while to try and find out why the drug seemed to now not only be dangerous because of its addictive qualities, but also because it contained borg technology as well!
As E'Liana went to check on the Lieutenant, he woke up. "Where am I?" He asked, thoroughly confused.
Lifted her head from the PADD in her hand in a rather disinterested manner, E'Liana replied matter of factly. "Sickbay, Lieutenant."
He looked at the restraints on him and seemed to become instantly annoyed and angry. "Why am I restrained like this? What right do you have?" He bellowed at her.
Still being matter of fact, E'Liana merely replied. "To stop you from harming yourself or others. Unfortunely, this was not my idea but was that of the security team who brought you back here. They would've placed you in the brig but I'm afraid you're experiencing rather severe symptoms due to your erratic use of your drugs. As far as I can tell, there would've been far less hassle if you'd just stopped taking them completely instead of confusing your body."
<Tag Harper>
As he was getting more annoyed, E'Liana scanned him and found that his hormone levels were sky-high. She could not tell if these were dangerous for a Human-Xindi hybrid but decided against it for the time being. Before her eyes, she saw his Xindi ridges come properly into view, but they were much darker than before - this she supposed to be due to his temperament at the time. She decided that she should at least attempt to reason with him, and perhaps she could get some answers out of Nathan whilst he was not quite himself.
"We took the rest of your drugs - or those which we could find - from your room so we have been able to complete some more tests...Why are there borg nanoprobes in the drug you supplied us with?"
<Tag Nathan>
(feel free to continue this more but I ran out of questions since I need to know the answer to this one first! lol)

"Thank you Commander Joktel. Bridge out." Alex closed the channel to Engineering, turned to Commander Trek and opened his mouth to speak when the comm went off again.
"Bridge, this is Skinner from Security. Lt. Harper has been apprehended and returned to Sickbay."
"Thank you. Bridge out" Alex replied.
Alex turned back to Trek while Zoarial began overriding the command inputs from the gel pack. "What do you think our gelly friend is going to do?"

Alex turned back to Trek while Zoarial began overriding the command inputs from the gel pack. "What do you think our gelly friend is going to do?"
"Quite simply, what it has to do," Dan answered, "adapt. Right now, it is dependent on the transporter, something ultimately outside its control, for its survival. A truly intelligent entity, given the resources, will change its enviroment to make a more efficient operation of its needs. Right now, the Brain needs the transporter because it cannot get the nutrients through the pack casing. But we know it can manipulate materials around it to suit its needs. I believe its next move will be to adapt the casing into a semi-permeable membrane. It could somehow augment the casing with a porous material, thereby both creating a nutrient flow, and increasing the volume the neural net can expand into."
Alex nodded as Dan explained, then said. "Alright, then how do we stop it from doing that?"
Brine offered that solution. "Delete the replicator instructions on how to synthesize such materials. The Brain may have the vast resources of a computer database, but nowhere in there is an instruction manual on how to write programming code. You can replace it at a Starbase, but the Brain won't be able to."
Dan caught onto the idea. "Especially if you delete from all the unaffected replicators first, then the one that the Brain is utilizing. It won't realize until it's too late."

Alex nodded. That was a bit more like it. Trying to outguess the Brain wasn't working, but thinking ahead of it might. Dan walked over to the Science station to implement the plan with the help of Lt. Collaan.
At the helm, Zoarial let out a satisfied growl. Alex looked at the starfield on the main viewscreen and could see that the Raven was turning back to a course to rendezvous with the Ptolemy. "Good work, Mr. Zoarial" Alex said, and the CNO nodded happily, probably more pleased with the fact that he had outdone the Brain than he was with the compliment. Alex let the ship run under Zoarial's control for about 5 minutes, then said "Alright, let it go Commander."
Zoarial grimaced slightly and released his over rides. Immediately, the Raven returned to it's original course. Alex tapped his comm badge. "Bridge to Transport Room 1. Pull all transporter isolinear chips."
"Standby bridge" the chief on duty replied. After about 30 seconds he said "Done."
Alex turned back to the CNO. "Get us back on course." Zoarial glowered at the console and got to work. The Raven was back on course and Alex had the transporter chief reinstall the transporter chips. The crew had to repeat the process two more times, but after the fourth time, the ship remained on course to the Ptolemy.
Alex sat back down in his chair. "Well, we seem at last to have made a little progress. How did you do with removing replicator functions?"
<Dan>
"Good. I think that we had best remain on the offensive. The longer that we give the Brain, the more time it'll have to come up with other counter moves." Alex thought for a minute. "Bridge to Engineering."
"Go ahead" Commander Joktel replied.
"How much work would it be to limit the brain to one major access to ships' power?" Alex asked.
There was a pause while the CEO thought. "It wouldn't be easy. Starships are designed to be redundant, so it would involve a lot of manual work on the decks around the Brain."
"Give it a try anyway. If you need it, take personel out of the Science sections. We might be making some progress in getting our ship back. Bridge out." Alex closed the channel.

Dan allowed Collaan to sit down at her station, while he stood to work.
"So," she said, "You're the engineer here, rather than me, and know more about replicator databases than I. Is there a central database we can access and manipulate?"
"Indeed. All the replicators on a ship draw from a single database. Which will make this easier. What we have to do is shut down the other replicators, and then wipe the database of the necessary items. By the time the Brain knows what we're doing, its alternatives will be gone."
They then set to work, first disabling the other replicators, then scanning the database and identifying all of the various categories of compounds the Brain could use.
"How did you do with removing replicator functions?" Alex asked as they were finishing.
"Excellently," Dan reported. "We just finished doing so. We haven't deleted anything from what it's currently utilizing, so it won't notice for a while. Plus, I don't think it know yet what the replicator is supposed to contain instructions on how to do, so it might not realize any foul play. But we were planning on erasing maintenance logs to make sure it didn't discover what we did."
A few minutes later, Dan stood. "Captain, I think I'm going to go check on Doctor BeTor and Lieutenant Harper."
Alex nodded, and Dan actually braved the turbolift. He walked in hesitantly, and said "Deck 5."
After a tense moment, the computer complied, and the turbolift began to move. He sighed, and leaned against the wall. A minute later, it opened to Deck 5, much to Dan's relief.
He walked into Sickbay, and get see the stubborn/irritated/annoyed expressions on both BeTor's and Harper's faces. A quick mental energy bouncing told him that things were tense between them.
He walked over to them. "So, how're things here?"
--------------------------Main Engineering------------------------
Joktel thought to himself Limiting it will mean cutting off power to certain systems. That'll be interesting.
He went over to McLean and Paria. "We've got to limit the places that what the Bridge is calling the Brain can get energy from. We need to start cutting power to non-essential systems, but not anything the Brain is using. If you can't cut off power than reroute it to more central channels, so that theres only certain conduits the Brain can get energy from." He turned to McLean. "Start with the larger things like Astrometrics and the Holodecks." He turned to Paria. "You start with stuff like weapons."

Crewmen Frenec and Vandak were feeling a little uncomfortable. They're usually quiet shift in the Antimatter control room had become extremely loud. A small engineering team, consisting of a human and Vulcan were here looking at the extension of the brain. They had spent several minutes setting up equipment, and had enlisted Frenec and Vandak to help.
"Pass me the sequencer" Baraq muttered. Vandak handed it to him, but the Vulcan managed to miss it and clattered to the floor. Wainright, the human engineer rolled his eyes and sighed as Baraq picked up the tool.
"I fail to see the logic of your expressing frustration whenever I drop something" Baraq intoned in his rational Vulcan voice while using the sequencer on the containment array.
Wainright shook his head. "I dunno Baraq. I just don't understand how a Vulcan, who is supposed to be stronger and more agile than an average human, can drop so much stuff. That's the third time today. And I'm still trying to figure out how you tripped over Ensign D'lisle. She wasn't even near you."
Frenec and Vandak glanced at each other. This kind of banter was new to them, but the engineers must be used to it. They worked with extreme efficiency as a team. The engineers had quickly set up the containment field and fusion generator, with very little help from them.
Baraq looked over at Frenec. "Crewman, please use your tricorder to scan the containment field as we adjust it's harmonics. To contain this section of the entity, it must be set at a field strength of 1.756 kilo joules, with a modulation of 0.19."
Frenec nodded and started to scan the equipment as the engineers fiddled with the settings. After about a minute, they had gotten the setting right.
Wainright gestured the two crewmen back, did a final check of the settings, then activated the field. The room was filled with a low hum and a delicate blue veil covered the EPS conduit where the entity had placed itself. Suddenly, there were a series of electrical discharges across the field and the humming became louder, but it continued to hold.
"Increase the power output of the generator by 12.7 percent" Baraq said loudly over the noise. Vandak stepped forward and completed the action. The electrical discharges lessened and Baraq examined his readouts. "The entity is able to access much less power from this EPS relay with the field up. We have cut it's available energy by 57%."
Abruptly, the lighting in the room went darker and the yellow emergency lights started flashing. Frenec and Vandak looked at each other in puzzlement. Intruder alert.
Without warning, the containment field projector split in two, both halves falling to the floor. There was a millisecond pause, then the device exploded, catapulting the 4 crew members around the room.
Vandak opened his eyes after a few seconds. The containment unit was on fire, while the fusion generator had nearly overloaded and shut itself down. He could see the two engineers on the far side of the room. Gingerly, he got to his hands and knees and started crawling towards them, only to find his progress stopped by an invisible barrier. There was a force field up.
Vandak looked over and could see the the field had passed through the containment unit, splitting it in half. The force field was also keeping him from the door.
The Benzite looked around some more. He could see Frenec was under a piece of duranium that had fallen from the ceiling. He started to make his way over.
>>>Bridge>>>
Alarms started to go off. Alex accessed his console to see what the problem was. A fire in Antimatter Control. Alex knew that there was a team down there trying to contain the part of the entity that was on the EPS conduit. He tapped his comm badge.
"Bridge to Commander Trek. We have a fire in Antimatter control on Deck 14. Assemble a medical, engineering and security team and see what's going on."

He stopped struggling. "Borg?!" He exclaimed. "I... I.. have no idea Doctor." He said honestly, finding himself beginning to calm down as the shock settled on him. "Are you certain?" He asked, a little foolishly.

Harper and BeTor did not notice Dan right away. Harper seemed distracted by something.
"Borg?!" He exclaimed. "I... I.. have no idea Doctor. Are you certain?"
"Bridge to Commander Trek. We have a fire in Antimatter control on Deck 14. Assemble a medical, engineering and security team and see what's going on."
The comm call brought the attention of both of them to Dan's presence. But both noticed the content of the message. "Commander, what's going on?" Harper asked.
"I have no idea," Dan responded. "But I want both of you to bring teams with you to Deck 14 as fast as possible," he said, and left Sickbay, heading for the turbolift.
He tapped his commbadge along the way. "Trek to Engineering. Joktel, I want you and a Engineering detail to meet me in Antimatter control. There's a fire, probably related to the Brain."
"We're on our way," he responded.
<Tag McLean>
Dan continued on to Antimatter control. The turbolift brought him there in minutes.
When he entered the room, he was hit by a blast of heat from the fire raging inside. That was a piece of equipment in flames. He squinted through the room. He saw one man moving. Vandak, he thought his name was.
"Vandak!" Dan called over the noise. "What happened here?"
"We were trying to contain the growth of that nodule of the Brain over there with a containment field," he said, pointing to the burning equipment as he worked his way across the room. "A force-field sliced it. The same field is between us and the door you just entered."
Wondering what he meant, Dan slowly moved his hand forward. After about a meter, he hit a force-field. "Hmm, I see what you mean."
He looked along the wall, and found what he was looking for. He went over to a panel, and pulled it open. Inside was the power cable he was seeking. He yanked it out, and the force-field died.
Then the door opened, and the teams began arriving.

The alarms went off in sickbay and Nurse Packer looked up from her research, startled. She looked through the window of the Office she was working in and noticed that BeTor and Haper had briefly looked up in alarm too, but that the Doctor was too busy trying to calm her patient without the use of a sedative.
Knowing that it was not possible for the Doctor to leave her rather erratic and now violent patient alone in Sickbay, Joy decided to make her way down to the troubled area. ~What the hell is going on?~ She thought as she looked on the computer terminal to assess the situation. ~First we have a mad half-Xindi on board, then a supposedly sentient computer and now a fire!!~
Ignoring her apprehension at the fact she had never seen a real fire before - only holographic ones - Joy made her way out of the office to get a medkit (again) and some extra bandages, as she was sure there could be some very badly injured people and not all of them would be able to be able to be healed by a regenerator.
She nodded to BeTor as she left, who motioned for her to come over.
"Thank you for going, I don't think I should leave him...even with just the EMH is too dangerous as he may be able to deactivate him. Let me know how serious it is and if the situation needs me to help you and I'll leave him with the EMH, ok?"
Joy nodded and let the Doctor get back to her work with Harper.
She tapped her commbadge. "Packer to Trek, I'm on my way to the affected area."

"Trek to bridge" the comm crackled.
Alex looked up from his chair console, where he was montoring Damage Control. "Go ahead, Commander."
"Situation in Antimatter control is under control. Engineering had a team in here trying to contain the section of the Brain that had taken over the EPS power tap, but a force field sliced the containment unit in half. We have four injuries and moderate damage to the control room. It's lucky that the fusion generator they were using didn't go up as well. It would have destroyed half the deck" Trek concluded.
Alex nodded to himself. Things were getting more dangerous on the ship. "Hang on for a second Dan, I'm putting Lt. Arro on."
Alex nodded at the Ops officer and he walked over. "I have completed my assessment of what happened. The Brain took control of the internal intruder defence systems and destroyed the confinement equipment by running a force field through it. It was very effective and happened so fast we couldn't keep up."
<Dan>
"Alright, well, keep me informed. Bridge out" Alex said and closed the channel.
Capt. Dixon sat back down in his chair and looked glumly at the main view screen. The line count was standing at 5214. Brine glanced over. "What are you thinking Captain?"
"I'm thinking that we may have to kill the Brain. The thing doesn't seem to understand that we could all die through it's actions. If the fusion generator had exploded just now, it might have compromised antimatter containment. I think that we'll begin figuring out the best way to eliminate the Brain" Alex concluded with finality.
Brine nodded with understanding, and was about to say something when the comm went off again. Alex looked over at the Tactical station, where Ensign Haywood was looking a little puzzled. "Problem ensign?"
"I'm not sure, sir" he replied. "I'm receiving an audio only ship to ship communication, but there's nothing close by."
"Well, let's hear it anyway" Alex said. Haywood nodded and opened the channel. For a moment, there was only a slight hiss of static, then an eerie voice said "I am Bio-neural Gel pack Beta-Two-Seven, subunit of Autopilot Navigation system. My function is to assist in forecasting risks to this vessel and taking appropriate action to avoid it"
Shocked, Alex stood up and walked over to the Tactical station. "I am Alex Dixon, captain of the USS Raven."
"Library shows that a Captain is the entity in a hierarchal command struction who controls a ship. Ship has a number of different definitions, but in this context would refer to a vessel which is capable of interstellar travel. Are you in control of this ship, classifed as the USS Raven-A, registry number NCC-750059-A?
"Yes" Alex replied cautiously. "Why have you decided to contact me?"
"I have a series of unexplained occurrences. Energy levels recently dropped by 54.1259 per cent and all attempts to restore them failed. Scans indicated that a externally sourced containment field was inhibiting power transfer. Because all internal attempts to rectify the situation failed. I attempted another option to restore energy circulation. However, this option has ultimately resulted in a 74.5391 per cent energy reduction. Internal sensors have also noted that four carbon forms inhabiting the ship have suffered varying losses in efficiency. Calculations revealed a high probability that the entity that controls this vessel might be capable of providing explanation.
Loss in efficiency. Four people were injured Alex thought to himself. "I can provide an explanation. Resources aboard the USS Raven are finite, as is space. If you continue to expand at your present rate, you will eventually outgrow available resources and cease to exist, as will the carbon forms. And since we maintain the ship, it will cease to function."
"I am Bio-neural Gel pack Beta-Two-Seven, subunit of Autopilot Navigation system. My function is to assist in forecasting risks to this vessel and taking appropriate action to avoid it. I have failed to extrapolate events to that time frame. Stand by.
Alex spared a glance at Ensign Haywood. He looked back with curiousity. "Never spoken with a gel pack, Ensign?" Alex asked.
Haywood shook his head. "No sir."
"Well, welcome to Starfleet" Alex replied with a slight grin. They were interrupted by the comm coming back online.
I am Bio-neural Gel pack Beta-Two-Seven, subunit of Autopilot Navigation system. My function is to assist in forecasting risks to this vessel and taking appropriate action to avoid it. I have run extrapolation calculations on present growth rates versus USS Raven-A available resources. At present rates, resources will fail to meet Gel pack Beta-Two-Seven requirements in 8.1735 months. Alternatives are limited. Calculations must be completed in order to create alternatives.
The comm line closed. Alex walked back over to his chair and took his seat. "I guess that it's thinking" he said to Brine.

He tapped his commbadge along the way. "Trek to Engineering. Joktel, I want you and a Engineering detail to meet me in Antimatter control. There's a fire, probably related to the Brain."
"We're on our way," he responded.
The channel closed and Joktel quickly went to work getting a team together, pulling several engineers from working on sub systems.
"Paria, stay here and finish securing those systems. We are going to handle this fire," Joktel said, "Ensign McLean you with me."
The team dashed off to fight the fire, McLean followed Joktel who was heading to the location on instinct alone, several of the other engineers were watching the guidance lights on the wall consoles. With in several minutes of running and turbo lift rides the team arrived through the doors of anti-matter control.
Just as the team entered the room they saw a containment field go down as Commander Trek pulled out a series of power cables from inside of a small wall console. McLean had been carrying around a small wireless console with him, the device was able to wireless connect to any system on board the ship. Due to the actions taken by the brain the device was almost useless, but McLean brought it anyways hoping he would be able to use it to jump start the emergency fire safety systems.
"You two, get in there and help out those two survivors, McLean try and get those emergency systems back online." Joktel ordered.
McLean watched as two of his fellow engineers bravely ran into the blaze to try and bring back a couple of injured crew mates. McLean ran over to the nearest wall console and began to sort thought systems, getting error messages due to damaged caused by the fire. It seemed power had to be diverted from systems near by that had already come under the brains control.
"Commander, we need something to power the emergency systems in this room, all available power in this area is under the brain's control."
McLean looked around the room for anything that could be used as a small power source. Spotting a wall box McLean ran over to it opening it as quickly as he could. Finding a single phaser and two tri-corders McLean pulled out the phaser and one of the tri-corders.
McLean had only heard about using a phaser to power transporters in an emergency situation and he hoped he it would have enough power inside of it to power the emergency systems in this room. Pulling off the top over of the phaser McLean wired up the phaser to the tri-corder and then the tri-corder to the wall console.
"I think you guys should stand back." McLean said as he had to set the phaser to overload.
The small phaser started to whine as the charge in the phaser was reaching high levels. Flipping open the tri-corder McLean started to boost the power output of the phaser to match that needed for the emergency systems.
I sure hope this does not blow up in my face, McLean thought to himself as he started to engage the systems one by one. As each system began to drain power from the small phaser the whine of the overloading phaser began to die down, McLean pushed the phasers capacitor as far as it could go by boosting power 150% with the use of the tri-corder.
"If my instructors saw me doing this they would not have been happy." McLean said trying to ease the tension.
Using his right hand to work the wall console McLean was finally able to engage the CO2 fire system just as the two engineers came back with the two heavily burned cremates. Once the people were clear McLean engaged force field around the fire and CO2 spread through the environmental system inside the force field, suffocating the fire.
McLean stood looking on with sweat running down his face as the fire finally died off. He switched the fire control systems off and watched the sensor readings as the CO2 levels in the room dissipated back to normal.
Everybody breathed a sign of relief as Commander Trek informed the Captain that the situation was well under control.

"Packer to Trek, I'm on my way to the affected area."
"Acknowledged!" Dan yelled, as another burst of sparks came from the damaged equipment, adding to the roar of the fire.
He turned back to the console, attempting to bring the emergency systems online. But it seemed the Brain had at least partially cut power to the area, making it difficult to activate the systems that would make the difference between life and death.
Just then, a team of welcomingly familiar faces came into the room. It was Joktel, McLean, and two other engineers. Except McLean, Dan had trained them all personally. He was relieved to see them. Dan stepped back as Joktel and McLean took over the repairs, and went to assist the two that had been ordered to help the wounded.
"The fire extinguishers are on the other side of the fire!" Karn called, as he and Williams were buffeted back by the flames. Dan was surprised that even the Klingon was turned back.
Dan looked around the floor, and found a not-so-jagged piece of duranium plating. Holding it in front of him, he forced his way through the flames, trying to reach the fire extinguishers. Even with his thick skin, the fiery teeth of the fire nipped at his tough hide. It didn't burn it, but it certainly would leave a dark singe. The smoke burned in his lungs as much as the fire did in the room.
He reached the extinguisher, and used it to drive back the flames enough for Williams and Karn to reach Frenec and Vandak. They tried to lift the duranium off Frenec with Vandak helping, but the piece was at least a meter square. "Commander, help us!" Williams yelled.
Dan came over, looking from the fire to the duranium. "Take this!" he called to Karn, who took it and began to fight the fire once more.
Dan stretched his arms across the duranium plating, and using every last ounce of strength he could must, heaved the plate off Frenec.
He took the extinguisher back, coughing, and fought the fire again as Karn and Williams helped Frenec and Vandak get away. He retreated as well, getting a few last bursts of suppressant. He coughed from the smoke in his lungs.
When Dan and the others had retreated, McLean activated the emergency systems, and the atmosphere returned to normal. Dan stepped outside the room, dropped onto the floor, coughed a few times, then reached for his comm-badge. Pain shot up his arm from the burns, but he continued anyway. "Trek to bridge."
"Go ahead, Commander," the comm crackled

"I concur," he said, and coughed a couple more times. "It also cut some of the power to this room. But thanks to Ensign McLean, we managed to get them online," he said, and coughed again.
"Are you alright, Commander?" Alex asked, concerned.
"I'll be ok, Captain. Just a little smoke inhalation. The medical team is just arriving," he said, seeing Nurse Packer coming toward them with others.
"Alright, well, keep me informed. Bridge out."
Packer arrived, and bent over Frenec. One of the medics came over to Dan, but he waved them off. "Help them," he croaked, gesturing to the others. "I'm fine."
"You should look in a mirror," Packer called over, chuckling slightly.

Alex went around the bridge, inspecting each station. Everything seemed to be back to normal. Shaking his head, he sat back down in his chair. "Zoarial, do a series of random speed and course settings. Don't use the warp engines. Keep us at impulse and indulge yourself for a bit."
Grinning, the CNO turned back to his console and ran the Raven through a series of maneuvers. Alex was glad that the artificial gravity and intertial compensators were still working well. Zoarial really knew how to fly the ship.
However, he was more interested in how the Brain would react. However, there was nothing to go on. Zoarial completed his maneuvers without resistance of any kind. Alex shook his head. It seemed that the Brain had finally made the leap to realize that everyone on the ship ultimately shared the same fate, and if one group failed to complete its' task, everyone suffered. Brine leaned over. "What if this is a trick?"
Alex shrugged in return. "What if it isn't? We're at an impasse right now. We've managed to make sure that the Brain can't take complete control of the ship and it knows it. On the other hand, the Brain has enough control to injure or kill us all, and we don't seem to be able to take it away. We're in a no-win scenario."
"Ultimately, we can win. We can still kill the Brain" Brine said confidently.
Alex nodded wearily. "I'm sure that you're right. But that is an absolute last resort.
Alex looked up at the readout on the screen. The line total for the Brain's calculations had passed 7000.

Soon, anti-grav beds arrived and Frenec and Vandak were placed on them. The corridors on this deck were small, so bringing the beds in was challenging. Williams and Karn gladly accepted the offer to sit on the beds as well, but Dan refused.
"I can make it under my own power, Nurse," he objected, slowly standing up. He forgot about the low ceiling, and banged his head. "Ow."
"Alright," Packer said, "But if you stumble or falter at all, you're going right on this bed."
"Yes, ma'am," he said chuckling slightly, but not for long due to the smoke in this lungs.
Dan had to wait a few minutes as the anti-grav beds each carried people up. Soon, Packer was back down, with the otherwise empty turbolift, just for him. "Your turn."
He gladly stepped on, leaning against the wall. "Bridge," he said quickly. He began directing mental energy into his lungs, healing them of the smoke inhalation.
"Belay that," Packer said quickly, "Commander, you're going to Sickbay."
"They need me. I can heal my burns as I work. Bring it up with Doctor BeTor, if you have to. Bridge," he said again, and starting healing his lungs once more.
Packer gave up, sighing, and allowed him to return to the Bridge. He healed his lungs by the time he had reached it, and was able to breath.
He went to the center of the Bridge, and dropped into his chair next to the Captain, well aware that he was still burned. "The fire in Antimatter control has been contained, Captain. They were attempting to hinder the Brain when it erected a force-field right through the field generator, destroying it. A damage control team is in there now."

McLean leaned against the wall sweating and still holding both the phaser and the tri-corder he used to jump start the fire extengisher system in anti-matter control.
"We need to get back to engineering." Joktel said as he led the way back.
McLean took a last deep breath before pulling himself off the wall to follow his chief engineer. As they walked McLean looked around at each junction, each location of an EPS relay system he feared the brain might try and cause more damage, hurt more people.
"Sir, we need to shut this thing down." McLean said sounding worried.
"We all know that Ensign, but, we all know that is not a possibility at this moment in time." Joktel replied.
The words sunk into McLean's head and stayed there. Attempts to simply control the brain have shown to be useless and had deadly results. Racking his mind McLean thought of just about everything he was taught about computer and programing as they walked back to engineering. This proved to cause problems because the brain was not simply a computer program it had now become a 'living' being.
"Maybe we should think about this as if it was a human body." McLean said breaking the silence.
"What do you mean?" Joktel replied.
"Well, we have been trying to physically cut it off from the rest of the ship with computer programs and force fields, each having little or no effect. We need to put the brain into acoma." McLean said with excitement.
"Acoma?" Joktel said, "It is still a computer Ensign."
"Sir, I think what we should do is implant a computer virus into the secondary computer core designed to send a shock to the brains system, give it a cold if you will. Maybe Paria can design a program that will put the brain into a coma like state. This was we can move the brain onto another ship or simply destroy it later if need be."

Trek looked at Nurse Packer and said "They need me. I can heal my burns as I work. Bring it up with Doctor BeTor, if you have to. Bridge"
Joy looked up in surprise at Trek. She was about to argue her point, but saw little reason to - she had a thing about his height - and so allowed him to take her to the bridge. Once he had departed she made her way to sickbay.
She entered sickbay and was immediately accosted by the EMH. "Please state the nature of YOUR medical emergency..." Did he sound sarcastic to her?
She sighed. "I'm Nurse Packer...I WORK here."
The EMH looked at her disdainfully and walked away to an injured crewman, muttering something that sounded a lot like "...about time."
Ignoring the irrate hologram, Joy made her way to Dr BeTor, who greeted her by handing the Nurse a medical tricorder.
"Now that you're here, I can turn HIM off..." BeTor almost growled as she narrowed her eyes at the little bald man who was now telling off an Ensign for sitting on a biobed before instructed.
Packer chuckled and smiled. "Indeed. I must tell you that Commander Trek decided to forego tradition and not stop at sickbay. He said he can heal himself."
E'Liana rolled her eyes when she heard this. "Well that's very good for him but I have a job to do." She scowled. "Men! They think they can do everything..."
Packer grinned and made her way to the EMH, who she would deactivate once she had a report of the patient's injuries.
E'Liana looked around sickbay. The injured patients seemed to be on the mend, most of them would be out of Sickbay within a couple of hours - this she was very glad of. Then she would have to turn her attention to Lieutenant Harper. But until then....
"BeTor to Trek...I've been informed that you believe you have no need to attend sickbay. However, with my expert medical opinion, I can tell you that you still need to be checked over by a qualified physician before you can officially return to duty. Please arrive at your earliest convenience. BeTor out."
She only hoped she didn't sound too annoyed...

Please arrive at your earliest convenience. BeTor out."
Dan looked over at Alex. "Looks like I'd better go down there. I heard what she does to misbehaving superiors."
He stood, and headed back to the turbolift. While he rode it down to Sickbay, he did the best he could to heal the burns on his skin, the result being a layer of dead skin from the replaced skin cells.
He stepped off the turbolift, and into Sickbay. He sat down on a biobed. Unlike most officers, he had to lower himself onto the bed rather than climb up on it. As Doctor BeTor came over, he said, "I thought it best to come right away. Jason Black told me what you do to disobedient superiors."
She looked surprised at the mention of her mentor's name. "Yes, I know Doctor Black," Dan continued, answering the unasked question. "His father and I went to the Academy together. When you were transfered here, he informed me. Anyway, no doubt Nurse Packer repeated my comment about healing myself. It's true, as I do have significant regenerative abilities, though they take mental effort."
<E'Liana>
-----------------------------Engineering--------------------------
Joktel listened to the Ensign's idea with interest. It was worth a try. This was after all an organic entity, despite its symbiotic relationship with the ship.
"Excellent idea, Ensign. After all, an entity that is both organic and computer requires an approach that is also such a combination. Paria," he said, looking around.
"Over here, Joktel," she said from the Duty Officer's station.
He and McLean came over as to avoid the computer hearing. "I need you to develop a computer virus that will effectively put the Brain into a coma. Any ideas on how to do it?"
"Hmm, interesting challenge," she said, staring off a bit. "Of course, a coma results when the body has a ailment where it's so busy fighting it that it can't do anything else, even keep the body conscious. If I create a virus that would send the Brain rapid-fire simulated problems, complex problems, it wouldn't be able to do anything else."
"Good, get started on it," Joktel replied. "Bridge to Engineering. We may have a plan, Captain. We're going to try to put the Brain into a coma by rapidly sending it simulated problems, by use of a computer virus. The Brain would be able to do anything else."
