"Sir .... I think we've found her." Marko said from the Tactical station.
"What do you have ?"
Probe three has picked up the wake from a ship .. It's staying outside our sensors but the probe has a lock."
Carl looked at the ready room door. In normal circumstances, he would call the Admiral to the Bridge. But these were far from 'normal' times, and Torek wanted answers ..
"Helm .. Alter course." Carl ordered, "Head directly for probe number five .. Full impulse"
"But the shi ......" Ramius began.
"I know Commander .. But if we turn directly at them they will simply move again .. This way we're simply checking the probes in turn."
"Heading directly for probe five at full impulse." the duty Navigation Officer confirmed.
"OK .." Torek said, standing, "Marko .. Ready all sensors .. Set auto-destruct on probe three."
Ramius quickly figured out just what the Exec' was doing. He set all sensors on the 'area' surrounding probe three. Once it destroyed itself, the shadowing vessel would light up for a few micro-seconds. But that was more than enough for him to get a lock on the ship ..
"Helm .. As the probe explodes .. Turn us to a direct heading toward it's position .. Increase speed to Warp two .. Understand !"
"Understood Sir." said the Lieutenant, making all the necessary settings then double-checking them, "Ready Sir." she said.
"Now Marko." Carl said, watching the view-screen intently.
There was a sudden bright flash of energy as the probe and her ejected fuel vanished into atoms .. But it was enough ..
"GOT IT !" Ramius almost shouted, as the Raven suddenly altered course and jumped to warp, "We have a positive lock on her now Commander .. Hold it .. She's going to warp .. She's running !"
"Get after her ! .. I want to know just who the hell has been playing with us." Torek said, then glanced at the ready room door once again. He took his seat in the command area, then tapped his Comms badge ...
=^= Torek to Admiral =^=
=^= Commander =^=
=^= Sir .. We have a lock on the vessel that has been shadowing us .. We're currently in pursuit =^=
Carl heard the unmistakable sound of a hand banging down on a desk, then the Admiral replied ..
=^= Mr Biers =^= Carl heard the Admiral say, =^= I'm afraid we will have to cut our chat short .. Commander Torek .. I will be on the Bridge shortly .. Out =^=
The Comm went silent, but at least the Admiral hadn't countermanded his orders. Carl knew that whatever was going on, Mc wasn't himself. For some reason or other, he wouldn't or maybe couldn't let his Exec' in on what that was at this point in time .. But one thing was certain, 'Something' was going on ..........

The ready room door opened, and Carl saw the Ship's Councellor enter the Bridge. He silently sat on one of the outermost Command seat's and began to study the PADD before him, 'a little TOO thoroughly' the Exec' thought ..
Carl's eyes flicked to the ready room, only to see the door close, with no sign of the Admiral !
Everyone on the Bridge was suddenly immensely busy, making sure not to make any sort of comment, let alone eye-contact with Torek ... Carl, for his part had simply reached the end of his tether ... They were currently pursuing an unknown vessel .. The Admiral, for whatever 'essential' or even 'inane' reason, was ignoring his responsibilities as Commanding Officer, choosing to leave things to Torek ...
Very well. Carl would proceed as if he had the Admirals' blessing, and deal with the issue later if he hadn't ...
"Helm .. Increase speed .. Warp Four."
"Aye Sir." the duty Navigation Officer said.
"Marko .. Anything yet ?"
"We're getting more through now Sir .. But she's using some sort of 'jamming' equipment."
"Keep trying."
Ramius moved over to the Science station, he could do more from the dedicated console ..
"Sir ....." Marko said, frowning, and making Carl turn to look at him, "Sir .. She's one of ours .. The USS Wolf."
"The Wolf ?" Torek said, eyes flicking to the screen for a second, obviously seeing nothing but stars streaming by as they pursued the distant ship ..
"Are we in Comms range ?"
"Three more minutes Commander." Ramius said, anticipating the question.
"Increase to warp five .. Hail them the second we're within range !" ..........

Down in the stank, hot, and mostly uncomfortable bowels of the ship was Lt. Commander McLean and his engineering teams, each had separate tasks on this shake down cruise which kept all their eyes glued to their consoles. Reports came in every five minutes or so as McLean has specifically requested but what he was seeing he didn’t like.
Although it wasn’t normal for the engineer to request navigation routes during the shake down since the flight paths were normally pre-programmed into the ships navigation computer to optimize engine performance and safely stress the engines, Commander Torek was pushing the engines a little to hard for McLean’s taste.
“Here are the latest.” McLean’s assistant Chief Engineer said as he handed over a stack of new PADS.
“What is he doing?” McLean said to himself. It wasn’t a secret to anybody that McLean had always thought of the engines as belonging to the engineers and that the Command officers were just borrowed them as they just so happen to be attached to the rest of the hull.
“Engineering to the bridge.”
“Go ahead Commander.” McLean heard Commander Torek’s voice come of the COMS.
“Sir, why aren’t we following the pre-planned flight path for the engine performance evaluations? The erratic maneuvers your pulling are putting heavier than normal loads on untested engines and I’m afraid with out the proper load testing for bugs we might break something.”

As the Raven began to close on the Wolf, Carl was anxious as to what they were going to come up against. The Wolf was an Intrepid Class starship, and clearly had some ability, but what were they playing at at the moment .. The Comm suddenly came to life .. =^= Engineering to the bridge =^= =^= Go ahead Commander =^= Carl replied. =^= Sir .. Why aren’t we following the pre-planned flight path for the engine performance evaluations .. The erratic maneuvers your pulling are putting heavier than normal loads on untested engines and I’m afraid with out the proper load testing for bugs we might break something =^= =^= I'm sorry about that Scott .. But something has happened and we're currently trying to find out what's going on .. I'm sure you're engines will perform beyond their specifications if the need arise .. But I'll keep our speed and maneuvers as limited as possible =^= =^= Well I'll do my best to ensure they stay attached to the hull then =^= McLean said, with feigned concern, but Carl knew him better than that now. =^= I'm sure you will Commander .. With you down there I'm certain we'll have everything we need should we need it .. Torek out =^= Carl grinned, Engineers always regarded Engineering, and especially the engines themselves, as their personal property, and as such not to be messed with by Command types. Scott was no different, but his advantage was he knew full well that Carl wouldn't force too much, even in the current situation, he'd be aware that they were still testing .. Or at least, they were at the moment !.. "Sir .. We're coming into Comms range." Marko said suddenly. "Open a channel." "Channel open." =^= This is Commander Torek to the Commanding Officer of ship ahead .. Drop out of warp and come to a complete stop =^= =^= .................... =^= no reply was forthcoming. =^= USS Wolf .. You have been shadowing us for the last day .. We would like to know why .. If you are not willing to drop out of warp .. I will have no choice but to engage you .. You have thirty seconds to comply with my order ! =^= Carl looked at Marko, then ran his thumb across his throat in a gesture to cut the Comm. "Raise shields .. Arm all weapons." Torek said, not quite believing his own order. He was contemplating firing on another Federation vessel, unheard of in normal circumstances, and if the Admiral didn't make an appearance soon, one that he might have to follow through .......... < tag : ALL >

As the doors to the ready room parted Mc7 overheard Carl order the ships shields raised and weapons armed.
Commander, that will not be necessary.
Looking over to Traks, the Admiral ordered him to disregard the Executive Officers previous order. Mc7 could see that Carl was aghast at being overridden so publicly by his Commanding Officer. Talking to the duty helmsman, Mc7 ordered the Raven to come to a stop and hold position.
Seconds after the Raven had come to a stop, Ensign McElroy who was manning the science station reported,
Sir, the Wolf is now entering our full sensor range and is on course to the Raven
Carl, please join me and the other Admirals in the observation lounge. Commander Ramius, you have the Bridge.
When the Admiral had finished talking he did not wait for a response to his request, but rather headed straight for the lounge and expected Carl to be in tow. Entering the Lounge, he seen what he already knew to be true, a set of four high ranking Admirals already sat at the elongated table which dominated the room. Nodding to each of them, Mc7 took his customary seat at the head of the table.
Carl, please take a seat. The Admirals here have some information that they think is relevant to not only the Raven’s security, but that of the entire Federation.
An hour after the CO and XO entered the lounge, both Officers appeared back onto the Bridge.
Sir, the Wolf pulled alongside us around 40 minutes ago and has refused to answer any hails.
Marko reported to the two new Officers to the Bridge. Sitting down in the Captains chair in the centre of the Bridge, mc7 tapped a few commands on his armrest and opened a channel to the USS Wolf, sitting stationary on the Raven’s port side.
USS Wolf, this is Vice Admiral Mc7_of_9. Security code Alpha 947 Gamma. Please respond immediately.
There was silence on the Bridge, with no one expecting the Admiral to succeed where all others had failed so far. A minute passed, followed by another and another, and then the silence was broken by a deep male voice coming over the comm channel,
Admiral, this is the Commanding Officer of the Wolf. What can I do for you?
Thank you for finally responding to our hails. I know I am speaking to the CO of the Wolf, but what is your name and rank?
Sir with respect, I am not able to provide that information.
Mc7 was beginning to tire of people beneath him in the Chain of Command thinking that when he asked a question or expected something to be done that it was, to coin an old earth phrase, for the good of his health, and not a direct order from a superior officer.
Let me rephrase that. You are being given a direct order by a superior officer to identify your name and rank. If you do not comply you will be committing a court martiable offence. I will not ask again, state your name and rank.
Admiral, Captain Janice Worthing, Commanding Officer USS Wolf reporting.
The reply was laced with resentment at having been presented with such an order, which was something Mc7 was beginning to notice more and more over the course of the day, and he had the feeling there was much more of that in store in the hours to come.

The meeting had taken an hour .. An hour in which neither Admiral Mc7_of_9, or Commander Torek had spoken a word. Mc had sat at the back of the room, silently watching Carl.
It was a little unsettling that Mc was letting the two other Flag Officers do all the talking, but Carl was sure he'd be informed of Mc's part in this in due course .. As quick as the meeting began, it was called to a halt, and the two Raven Officer's re-entered the Bridge ...
~~~~~~~~~~
"Sir." Marko said to the Admiral, "The Wolf pulled alongside us around 40 minutes ago and has refused to answer any hails."
Carl sat down, watching the Nova Class star ship less than one hundred meters off their port as Mc opened a Comm ..
He was less than happy with the response he got, and resorted to making the 'request' an order.
=^= Admiral .. Captain Janice Worthing .. Commanding Officer USS Wolf reporting =^=
=^= Please activate visual Captain =^= Mc said, and several seconds later, the screen adjusted to show the Wolf's Bridge ..
Captain Worthing was clearly less than happy at being ordered around, but she'd just have to live with it, because for now, Mc wanted some answers ..
=^= Captain =^= the Admiral said, making his voice and speech as 'casual' as possible, =^= I'll expect you in my ready room in five minutes .. Please don't keep me waiting =^=
Torek had not heard the Admiral talk to Officers in such a manner before, and was still putting it down to the current situation, 'whatever the hell that is' he thought, as he watched the Commanding Officer on the Wolf seemingly weigh up her options, which were pretty much non-existent, as she obviously realized and got up from her seat ..
=^= I'm .. On my way .. Admiral .. Wolf out =^=
As the Comm closed, Mc got up and headed for his ready room ..
"Show the Captain in as soon as she arrives Carl."
"Sir." Torek replied, then as the Admiral left the Bridge, Carl spoke to the Operations Officer ..
"Play back that Comm .. Visual only."
Marko did as he was asked, a little confused, so watched the replay along with the Exec' .. Carl wasn't sure just 'what' was unusual about the conversation, but now that he'd seen it again, he noticed something odd .. While all the Wolfs Bridge Officers were getting on with their jobs during the Comm, one Officer, a Commander, and former Borg, never took his eye's from the Admiral ..........
Daniel was mildly annoyed at the timing of it but he accepted it, leaving the admirals ready room Daniel re-took his seat at the side of the bridge and continued to watch things from there he hoped the admiral would seriously consider his suggestion. Before Daniel had a real chance to relax the Padd that was on his lap received a new message from his Assistant, worried what had her sending a message to him he opened the message and read it while trying his best to listen in to what was happening on the bridge.
FROM: Lieutenant Lilly Collins, Assistant Chief Counsellor TO: Commander Daniel Biers, Chief Counsellor SUBJECT: Reports
Sorry to bother you sir, but I have several reports here for you to read at some point and it seems one of the counsellors got himself into an argument with one of the engineers. I will not go into detail but Lt Dar is not in sickbay with a mild nose injury (which I think is quite an improvement) and will not be out for at least a day.
I will have my daily report on your desk when you return. Ps attached is a personnel file that just came in, seems we have a new CTSO <Message Ends>
Daniel smiled as he read his assistants comment, ‘you leave them alone five minutes and they are already angering the engineering staff’. Daniel had read Elliot’s report from his previous posting and if it was to be believed then this little incident was most likely his fault, something Daniel would have to look into later. Daniel then opened the attached file and began to read, ‘pretty normal for a security officer’ Daniel noted the death of a friend note that had been made on his file by a medical officer for a future counsellor to look into, which Daniel made a mental note to do when he finished trying to half drag the command staff into a closed room.
As Daniel’s full attention returned to the bridge he heard a statement that made Daniel worry. =^= USS Wolf .. You have been shadowing us for the last day .. We would like to know why .. If you are not willing to drop out of warp .. I will have no choice but to engage you .. You have thirty seconds to comply with my order ! =^= Carl looked at Marko, then ran his thumb across his throat in a gesture to cut the Comm. "Raise shields .. Arm all weapons." Torek said, Daniel almost had to pinch himself to make sure he was not dreaming, ‘did Carl just order us to prepare to fight one of our own ships, what the hell is he thinking’ Daniel was thankful that the Admiral at that moment walked onto the bridge and relayed the order. After MC took Carl into the observation lounge Daniel looked around at the rest of the bridge crew. Most were quite shocked at what had happened, though few showed it. Opening his mind to see if he could sense anything from the bridge and more importantly the observation lounge he found himself unable to even do that ‘that overload must have blocked me up again’. Resigned to the fact that he would just have to read them as they came out Daniel started reading though the new CTSO’s records again.
As an hour passed Daniel began to wonder what was going on, this was meant to be a routine shakedown trip and now it seemed to be turning into a minor conspiracy. Daniel was relieved when both officer returned to the bridge and took up their normal positions. =/\=USS Wolf, this is Vice Admiral Mc7_of_9. Security code Alpha 947 Gamma. Please respond immediately.=/\= everyone on the bridge went silent, most had been trying to hail the wolf for some time without success, most were now listening intently for any sound that would suggest that the ship was friendly. Finally their thoughts were answered as a male voice came though on the comm. channel =/\=Admiral, this is the Commanding Officer of the Wolf. What can I do for you?=/\= Daniel listened as the conversation started going dangerous almost immediately with the admiral pulling rank on the CO of the wolf. Daniel was relieved when the view screen showed the wolf’s bridge, he looked at all the faces on the bridge of the wolf, most seemed uninterested in the view screen on their end but there was another man looking at them and seemed not to be in any rush to go anywhere ‘their XO probably trying to work out if we are a threat or something’ Daniel dismissed it and continued to watch his own command staff. As the conversation ended and Mc returned to his ready room, Daniel noted that Carl looked concerned, and when he asked Marko something Daniel could see that Marko was visibly confused.
Daniel became very worried where this was all going, he could not help but feel he was going to have to make a decision on getting both the Admiral and the commander down for an evaluation soon before they got themselves in over their heads. Daniel did not want to have to make it an order but as the admiral has done today Daniel was not ruling it out. Hoping that Mc or Carl would give him some time later Daniel returned to reading everyone and was not to surprised that most on the bridge were starting to get confused as to what was going on between the Admiral and his XO.
Phaser blasts flew over head. And park flew as the blasts missed their intended target and hit rock. The Cave Jack and hi security team were in was swarming with Klingons. Jack fired a blast and hit one of his klingon counterparts which knocked him off his feet and to the ground dead. This shocked the rest of the force into retreating. Jack’s Second in command stood up waving his arm to his comrades to follow suit.
“Come on lets get them while their running” Then he stood up and ran on, nobody followed.
“Williams Get back here!!” Jack shouted but it was no use. Jack had noticed that one of the klingons on the pretence of being dead had an explosive at the ready and had just let it go. Williams ran straight into the blast and fell to the floor dead.
Then the hordes of what must have been a small Klingon Army came running round the corner.
“Ready phasers!!” One junior security officer shouted.
“No!!” Jack shouted “it’s no good. Computer end program”
The Klingons blurred out of existence then the Cave went and all they were left with was a black room with conduits running across the wall. Jack stood up from his prone position and made his way over to Williams, he offered the man a smile and a hand up. Williams was a younger man and he blushed as he accepted the help.
Jack turned to his security team. “Now does anybody want to tell me what went wrong?” He asked knowing the answer was obvious.
A young recruit volunteered “Well we should have stayed put”
“Correct” Jack replied turning to Williams “You can’t always take the offensive in battle or security situations” He winked at Williams knowing the two men had planned the exercise as an example for the new recruits “Okay, exercise over. You can take the rest of the afternoon off barring any security issues”
As the crew piled out of the holodeck, Jack turned to Williams. “Well done”
“Really I thought I over acted the death a bit.” Williams laughed “Next time can you be the lesson learned?”
“Look I’m new here, and I see this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, to make a quoted” Jack smiled but obviously the young Ensign was not familiar with 20th century entertainment. “but I need to gain the respect of the men, so I can rely on them to do the correct thing in a real situation. So for now… I’m sorry but I have to demean you”
The two men exited the holodeck and walked the hall of the USS Raven B for a while in silence. Williams looked a bit disappointed so Jack made a decision he only ever made when women applied. He turned to his second and smiled.
“Tell you what I’ll buy you a drink. And we can get to know each other better”
Jack and Ensign Williams had just finished having their drinks, Jack had a Tea and Williams had a Coffee. While they talked Jack had learned that Ensign Williams had been born on earth in San Francisco. Hence Jack drinking tea while the young ensign drank coffee. They had also been talking about culture and different species, jack had talked about his past in Starfleet. Achieving so much at a young age was amazing to Williams.
“I hate the J’hem Ha’dar. I have fought too many battles, some of which they have killed unarmed civilians and some good friends of mine.” Jack said in the flow of conversation “ Now Klingons, I can respect, they kill honourably. I have no hard feelings against the Klingon empire.”
“So you’ve been in a few battles then?” Williams smirked
“Just a few” Jack Joked.
They sat there for a few moments talking about everything from their favourite colour to the teacher they first had at the academy. Then Jack noticed the time, said his farewells to Williams and began to make his way to the bridge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As Jack stepped off of the turbo lift into the bridge area, Admiral Mc7 had just left the bridge, he reported in for his shift to a preoccupied Commander Torek, who waved the man away as he studied the viewing screen. Jack realised the man must have been busy so he just went to his Tactical console and began running a few tests on the shields and weapons arrays. As he looked up he heard Toreks voice.
"Play back that Comm .. Visual only."
Jack looked at the screen from behind his position, he thought he saw something strange, everyone on the bridge were muffling about doing their tasks aboard the ship. But there was one officer, he was just staring at the captain. He didn’t know what to make of it, but the officer had the remains of an eye piece above his left eye. He must have been a former borg.
Jack felt a sudden chill blow across his neck as he met eyes with the image. He knew something was up, but so, it appeared, did his first officer. Jack stepped down from his console and moved next Torek, never taking his eyes off the borg officer as it was played back again. As he moved it was almost as if in slow motion. The operations officer Marko Ramus was looking rather Confused as to why his second officer was being so insistent but Jack thought he knew what it was all about.
Jack stood there realising that his first assignment was not just going to be a shake down cruise, but he realised they might be looking at a possible hostage situation.
“Sir” Was all Jack could manage, as he waited for orders to prep for a possible security breech.
"Marko .. Replay and freeze on time index two two one eight point seven five."
The playback dutifully froze at the requested point, it showed the Officer, seemingly looking, directly at the Admiral ..
"Computer .. Identify image of the Officer currently on the view screen."
"Officer is Commander Jonathan Kirk .. Human .. Former Borg drone .. Assigned Chief Engineering Officer USS Scavenger .. Currently on secondment to the USS Wolf."
'What is he doing on the Wolf' Carl thought to himself.
"Sir !"
Turning, Torek noticed the new Tactical Officer ..
"Not yet Mister Baltimore." Carl said, with a small smile, anticipating the Ensigns' request, "We're all .. Friends .. At least for the moment .. But ensure we are ready if the need arises." he finished, making sure that Baltimore was active.
The information given to both Mc7 and himself by Admiral Kimmel and Admiral Willard, was confidential. At least it was at the moment, because neither Mc or Carl believed in keeping the Senior staff in the dark on any matter concerning the ship and crew.
Carl tapped the Comms badge on his chest ..
=^= Torek to Admiral Mc7_of_9 =^=
=^= Go ahead Commander =^=
=^= Are you .. Alone Sir =^=
=^= Give me a moment =^= Mc said, moving to one side, =^= OK you can speak now Carl =^=
=^= Sir .. During the Comm with the Wolf .. I noticed an Officer in the background .. He seemed to be concentrating on you personally .. I have replayed the Comm and checked on his identification =^=
=^= Go on .... =^= the Admiral said, almost knowing what was coming.
=^= He's also an ex-Borg .. A Commander from the Scavenger .. Jonathan Kirk =^=
There was a noticeable hesitation from Mc, Carl almost repeated the information, but Mc beat him to it ..
=^= I'm on my way to the Bridge Carl .. Out =^=
The Comm closed, and Carl looked at the image on the screen. Another Borg .. Taking his seat, he told Baltimore and Ramius to check their boards, he wanted to be sure the Raven was ready if need be ..........
Jack knew Commander Torek was right about not organising a security team right away. But Jack’s experience said different, he decided to go about readying his security team anyway but he would do it discreetly. He finished recalibrating the shields via help from engineering. Then he asked permission to leave the bridge and stepped into the turbo lift. When he arrived at his destination, the canteen, Williams who he had contacted had rallied the recruits. They were all sat down around a table. Jack surveyed them and then took a seat at the table. Looking into the eyes of his fresh recruits, most of whom were still wet behind the ears, he wandered if he was making a mistake but he decided these preparations were necessary. He took a deep breath and let it out.
“Right men” He started “we may have a possible security breach onboard the USS Wolf, so I want to make preparations for a possible security situation, discreetly. I don’t want anyone visiting the armoury without my say so. But just keep your eyes and ears open”
The men took the info then began looking to each other as if the man next to him would know what to do. Then Williams looked to me. “What sort of security breach, I mean what could we be up against?”
“It is possible that a former borg officer onboard has become active again” He said to a rumble of voices “ No remember I want discreet nobody does anything without the permission of me or the captain is this clear?” that was followed by a chorus of ‘yes sir’. And jack dismissed them from the canteen.
He sat there thinking if the situation would arise or not, how would he take on the borg with a compliment of fresh recruits as security officers. It was nerve racking to think that it might happen, but it might not still happen. He decided to go back to the bridge. When he arrived Jack stood behind the tactical console and got ready for what was going to be an amusing day at work.
Kirk could feel the Admiral in his mind, just as he felt all the other former Borg drones when he came into a close proximity to them. The Admiral’s thoughts and concerns became Kirk’s thoughts and concerns; something the former drone did not particularly like more of the time.
“Sir, the Raven is moving awfully close to us.” Announced the Navigations officer.
There are coming for me, Kirk thought. He had just escaped detection at the last Starbase, but now, some how he had been found. During the last several months the Borg had been making bigger and more noticeable pushes into Federation space, which of course had put more of the Starfleet brass on high alert. The last thing they needed was a bunch of front line officers being in constant contact with Borg ships, giving away their starship positions, tactical strength, and any of the countless facts any one officer might have locked inside of his brain.
Paranoia spread like wildfire among humans, it was a natural reaction to something they did not fully understand or want to understand. All they saw was an enemy, and with the increased number of freed Starfleet and Federation citizens trying to reestablish their careers or their lives, the Federation suddenly saw an enemy form within.
“Sir, I suggest we raise shields.” Kirk suggested form the Engineering console.
“On what grounds?”
“The Raven is behaving rather erratically and in such a case the Starfleet protocol dictates an increase to at least Yellow Alert.”
“I don’t need to be lectured on Starfleet protocol Commander.”
“Of course you do not sir. It is just my observation and suggestion based upon the Raven’s current actions.”
“Noted.”
Jack heaved a sigh of relief from behind the tactical console, now at least they were prepared for the worse case scenario. He couldn’t bare being caught unprepared again. He stood staring at the blank view screen, there didn’t seem to be much he could do, he just had to stand ready for any situation that presented itself. He knew the end of his shift was coming up, although being chief of security and tactical his shift was never up, if they called he had to drop and go. But he hoped he would at least get some time off to get used to his new ship and crew.
The time seemed to drag, he decided he would go to the canteen and file a report of the current security status. At least then he could be bored out of his skull with a tea and a bacon sandwich to keep his company. After a few more agonising hours his relief came it was a junior officer who had also selected to be tactical and security at the same time, poor sap, if he reached the point in his career where he was in Jacks position he would soon realise the error of his ways and not be selfish in choosing both like Jack. Not only did he have two reports to file. He also had two sets of officers to keep busy, not to mention rosters and rotors for the shifts.
He gave the young man a wry smile, and made his way to the canteen. When he finally arrived and his stomach was aching as he had skipped breakfast. He approached the replicator and ordered then sat down with his padd to start the reports. He took a bite out of the bacon sandwich and realised the replicator needed some adjusting, it tasted more like a cheese salad sandwich. Opening the bread revealed that it was in fact a cheese salad sandwich. He made a mental note to have Commander Mclean have someone look at it later. But he settled in the end for the cheese salad sandwich and the lukewarm cup of mush the machine had produced.
Now he went to his reports, simply put it could be summed up in one sentence: No security issues to report, full crew compliment still. Shields and weapons functioning normally.
Then he went to the rotors this somewhat took more time, he tried to make it as even as possible trying to keep at least twelve security members on duty at all times, then the others would always be on call if necessary. He now took a sip of his now cold tea, pulling the cup away immediately and frowning and making funny noises with his mouth as he tried to get rid of the taste.
“Not the best tea in the world” He muttered to himself. Standing up he brushed the crumbs off of his uniform and walked out of the canteen. Then he walked to his quarters to get a few hours sleep before he was called to resume his duty.
As normally was the case he was always called in the middle of a really good dream. But when he arrived in his quarters he put the padd down on the table and slung himself on his bed.
A dream is what you make of it. And jack made this one last as long as he could. He was on a beach on earth with two beautiful under dressed females, which were serving him drinks. He understood it was a dream because in his mind he was thinking I don’t want to wake up from this. He was just getting to the good part where they both offer themselves to him and then start arguing and fight with pillows, when a strange beeping sound came out of no where. The image of the girls disappeared as he opened his eyes to darkness.
He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and made a half groan half yawn noise as he stretched. “what is it?”
=/\= Encoded incoming transmission received=/\=
He sat up and requested lights, then he swung his legs over the side of his bed and made his way to the communication screen on his coffee table. He pressed a button and a familiar face appeared. It was his sister Gemma a member of star fleet intelligence. So she could encrypt a transmission so no one would know it even arrived on the ship.
“Hi sis” Jack sighed “and what is so important that you had to interrupt me at….. Jeez two in the morning.”
“I’ve done it, I think I may have found Simon” She replied with enthusiasm. Jack hated seeing his sister like this it was upsetting, to see her setting her self up for a fall.
The first couple of times Jack had traipsed to the planets on the edge of various galaxies to help her search for their brother, but then he had realised his brother must have been dead. But Gemma couldn’t grasp the fact she kept looking and dragging Jack with her. Jack rubbed his hands over his face and through his hair, and left them resting on his head.
“Look sis, he’s dead, we would have found him by now.” Jack knew his sister could sense the frustration in his voice, he suddenly realised and sat up straighter, “ I’m sorry but I can’t keep looking in vein.”
“Prisoner camps” She stated simply. “Illegal ones run by mixed race, and containing people.”
“Look I’m on duty and in the middle of a mission, I can’t just drop everything and go.”
“All you need to do is talk to your CO, tell him to contact Starfleet intelligence and request a shuttle and…..”
“No!!! I’m not taking a shuttle just on one of your hunches….” he stopped himself when he realised he was shouting, “Look” he said his voice calmer now “just wait we’ll be back in a few weeks and then we can take a leave of absence and go home to earth and spend some time as a family. Ok” “Ok” Jack didn’t believe her.
“Promise you won’t go there alone” He said
“I promise” His sister conceded
“Ok see you in a few weeks” He said confident she wouldn’t go “End transmission” He watched his sisters face disappear from the screen then he went back to his bed. Falling asleep he did hope that his sister woul not do anything stupid.
Carl sat patiently watching the USS Wolf .. Her Commanding Officer was following protocol, for the moment at least, and not raising shields, or bringing her weapons on-line. That suited Torek. "Marko .. Whats the distance between us and the Wolf ?" "One hundred forty seven thousand meters and closing." Ramius replied, "On our current heading .. They will pass us on our starboard." "Helm .." Carl said, "Adjust our course to head directly for the Wolf .. No increase in speed .. Let's see how they react." he finished, glancing at the Opps Officer. Everyone on the Bridge watched the Nova Class vessel on the massive view-screen in silence, no-one wanted a confrontation, especially with another Federation ship ... "Distance ?" "Sixty two thousand meters Commander." the duty Navigation Officer reported. Her hand hovering above the control that would halt their forward motion. Carl had to admire Captain Worthings' nerve. She should have raised shields by now. "Bring us to ten thousand meters and hold there." "Sir ?" "Ten thousand meters Helm .. Keep our shields down and all weapons off-line." Torek said, leaving no room for misunderstanding. "Aye Sir......" said the Helm Officer, and Ensign Baltimore at Tactical. "...... Ten thousand meters .. Answering all stop." It was almost unheard of for two Star ships to be so close in open space. Not without the prior consent of both Commanding Officers. 'Worthings Tactical Officer must be pulling his, or her, hair out about now' Carl thought, as he glanced at the chronometer above the screen .. 'Where is Mc !' he wondered, annoyed. "Computer .. What is the current location of Admiral Mc7_of_9 ? ...... Cancel request." Torek said, past caring what his CO thought of his actions, "Computer .. Get a lock on Admiral Mc7_of_9 .. Prepare to beam him directly to the Bridge .. Authorization Torek-Alpha-Two-Two-Gamma." "Lock established." the computer stated. He would give Mc7 another five minutes .. Then he would find himself on the Bridge whether he liked it ..... OR NOT ! .......... < tag : Mc7 >
Daniel had become very worried about both of his senior officers, but if he thought things could not get any worse he was about to watch an XO lose what little shielding from him that he had left "Helm .." Carl said, "Adjust our course to head directly for the Wolf .. No increase in speed .. Let's see how they react." Daniel could not believe his ears, his XO had just ordered them to move into a collision course with another Federation ship. Daniel looked around the bridge to find that he was not the only officer shocked by this order. "Bring us to ten thousand meters and hold there." Daniel almost felt like getting up and relieving Torek of his duty there and then but he could see where he was going. Daniel made a few more noted on his padd, when he looked up they had come to a stop without being shot at, "Computer .. What is the current location of Admiral Mc7_of_9 ? ...... Cancel request." Torek said, "Computer .. Get a lock on Admiral Mc7_of_9 .. Prepare to beam him directly to the Bridge .. Authorization Torek-Alpha-Two-Two-Gamma." Daniel just dropped the padd at hearing this, he had never heard of a XO dragging his CO to the bridge by such means, a CO dragging an XO yes but never the other way around. Feeling it was time to step in Daniel rose from his seat and made his way to the operations consol. “Commander, may I have a word with you?” Daniel felt the soft approach was probably the best way
<Tag Carl> OOC: following bit is either at the consol or where Carl decides
IC: Daniel looked at the XO trying to watch for any signs that he was going to need security “Commander, I would like you to come to my office now, so that we can have a chat, Commander Ramius can look after things and we can call Acting Ensign Baltimore up here from a tactical side.” Daniel hoped Carl would listen to reason but if he did not Carl would not give another order until he had been cleared.
I watched from my comfortable position at my science station as we ever so slowly approached to the meandering USS Wolf. The tension on the bridge was as thick as it came that day, and as the old saying goes, ‘you could cut it with a knife.’ Sadly I hadn’t a knife with me to try out the old saying but it was the thought that mattered.
I don’t remember running any background scans or any of the other numerous amounts of standard scanning I was supposed to be doing. What struck me most about that day was the sweat that had built upon my brow, as gross as that sounds it’s what I remember the most. It was also abnormally hot, so hot on the bridge that I almost walked right over to the OPS station just so I could double check the environmental control, more specifically the air conditioning!
Commander Torek and various other faceless officers were rushing about as they always do on the bridge, but they seemed to focus on one officer aboard the USS Wolf in particular. He looked human from where I was standing, but these days you can never tell who’s actually human and whose say a Betazoid. When I found out how many people actually look human it shocked me, and I had to rush back and rethink my ideals and beliefs. So anyways, they are focused on this officer aboard the Wolf and I find him very striking with his dark hair and piercing eyes.
I wish I were a Betazoid right now. It would be nice to know the inner thoughts of the overly stressed and taxed bridge officer. I wonder if they ever want my job, or are they completely happy being stressed out? I want to know what the striking officer aboard the USS Wolf is thinking, does he see me? Should I wave? No that would be unprofessional, even for a science officer. I probably should get back to my work. You can never tell when Commander Torek will call for a ship wide update.
"Commander .. May I have a word with you ?"
"Go ahead Councillor." Carl said, relaxing back into his seat. Making Biers hesitate slightly at the Commanders casual reply.
"Commander .." Biers continued, "I would like you to come to my office now .. So that we can have a chat .. Commander Ramius can look after things and we can call Acting Ensign Baltimore up here from a tactical side."
"I don't think now would be the time for me to leave the Bridge Commander ...." Carl said, making it plain that he meant it, then continued before Biers could interrupt, "It may have 'escaped' your notice Councillor .. But we have neither raised shields .. Armed weapons .. Or make any 'aggressive' move .. So would you mind explaining why you need my presence in your 'office' .. Because if you think for a second that my locking on to the Admiral constitutes an unstable act from an Executive Officer .. I would like to hear your reasoning !"
Carl seemingly relaxed even more, smiling at the Councillor, all but daring him to contradict ... This man had no idea of how Command worked on a Star ship, and on top of that was new to the Raven. Torek simply didn't have the time to fence words ..
"I can assure you Councillor .. That neither you .. Or the ship are being placed in any danger .. 'IF' you want to report this incident in your logs please do so .. But if there is nothing else I'm certain there are more 'pressing' things for you to be getting on with in your office ....."
Carl was making it perfectly plain that he didn't like what Biers was trying on, and more annoyed that he was naive enough to think the required two Command Officers needed to relieve a Captain or Executive Officer would be willing to do so on events so far .. Glancing at the chronometer briefly, three minutes until he would bring the Admiral to the Bridge .. Carl looked directly at the Councillor, then raising his eyebrows, spoke ...
"Well ?" ..........
Jack had just returned to the bridge after a couple of hours rest, he decided to relief the young ensign who had relieved him earlier. A couple of hours had worked wonders for him he now felt fresh as a daisy. They were still waiting for the captain of the USS Wolf to come aboard.
"Ten thousand meters Helm .. Keep our shields down and all weapons off-line." Torek said, leaving no room for misunderstanding.
"Aye Sir......" said the Helm Officer, and Ensign Baltimore at Tactical
Keeping a monitor on the shields and weapons, he kept them offline and watched to see what would happen as the approached the Wolf. But nothing happened. He was surprised that even though there was no intention to harm the Wolf, the Raven had looked threatening and they hadn’t received a hail requesting what they were doing.
"Computer .. What is the current location of Admiral Mc7_of_9 ? ...... Cancel request." Torek said, past caring what his CO thought of his actions, "Computer .. Get a lock on Admiral Mc7_of_9 .. Prepare to beam him directly to the Bridge .. Authorization Torek-Alpha-Two-Two-Gamma."
"Lock established." the computer stated
Jack was shocked at the forwardness of the XO, and he looked across to the Councillor. Maybe he had just become frustrated by the CO’s absence, in a situation like this he really should have been here to over see things, but Jack gathered he wasn’t even on the bridge.
“Commander, may I have a word with you?” Commander Biers asked and took the captain to one side.
Jack breathed deep and let it out again, thank god Commander Biers had stepped in. Now Jack waited to see if the concillor could calm the situation.
“What the hell is going on up there.” McLean cursed into the console directly in front of him down in the depths of Main Engineering. There were two major pet-peeves for the sometimes grumpy Chief Engineer, one of them already had happed today and the second was just about to.
“Engineering to the bridge. I imagine you already know you’re getting far to close to that ship.”
“Everything is under control Commander.” Torek replied over the COMs.
“I just don’t want to have to perform a space walk because some snot-nosed pilot on either ship messes up.”
“Your concerns are duly noted Commander.”
The COMs closed with McLean pacing about Main Engineering while Commander Torek and the rest of the Command staff were playing Chicken with another starship, “I’m going top side.” McLean belted out as he rushed out of Main Engineering on his way to the bridge.
Carl hoped that the Councillor knew the limits of his position. It would take the Chief Medical Officer, along with a second Command grade Officer to remove him, or indeed the still absent Commanding Officer from the Bridge of a Star ship. Torek was giving the Councillor every opportunity to fix what he started. Either by apologizing, or leaving the Bridge. Carl wasn't actually concerned as to which it was, when the Comms burst to life ....
=^= Engineering to the bridge .. I imagine you already know you’re getting far to close to that ship =^=
=^= Everything is under control Commander =^= Torek replied, still watching Biers.
=^= I just don’t want to have to perform a space walk because some snot-nosed pilot on either ship messes up =^=
=^= Your concerns are duly noted Commander .. No-ones going to be scratching the paintwork =^=
The Comm went silent, it wouldn't surprise the Exec' if Scott wasn't already heading to the Bridge to see for himself how close the two massive ships were. Carl turned in his seat to watch the Wolf as she hung a mere ten kilometers away ..........
The doors to the Bridge parted as Mc7 made his way from his ready room onto it. As soon as he crossed the threshold onto the Bridge the tension he could feel was palpable. Looking around the faces of the officers at stations around the ships command centre only confirmed the Admirals initial thoughts.
Carl, what have you found out about the Officer on the Wolf then?
As Carl brought the Admiral up to date with their literal head to head with the Wolf, the usual calm that displayed across Mc7’s face evaporated, to be replaced with a distinct look of unease. When Carl had finished briefing the CO, an eerie silence fell across the Bridge. It was one of the few moments in Mc7’s entire career when he had absolutely no idea what to do.
The senior officer was spared, albeit temporarily, from having to decide what to do by the Chief Op’s Officer, Marko Ramius when he announced that the Wolf’s CO was beaming over to the Raven, as per Mc7’s request.
Mc7 nodded to the officer to acknowledge him, before standing and turning to speak to Carl.
Commander, will you join me and the Captain in my ready room please. I think it’s time the three of us brought each other up to speed with this situation.
The two officers made their way from the Bridge to the ready room, and were followed minutes later by Captain Janice Worthing who had been escorted their by a security officer.
Thirty five minutes later, the doors to the Bridge parted and the three officers emerged back onto the Bridge. Nods were exchanged and Captain Worthing left the Bridge to transport back to the Wolf. Mc7 and Carl had only just settled back into their Command seats when the turbolift door opened and Admiral Kimmel stepped off. Mc7 looked around, and upon seeing who had just entered the Bridge, stood up.
Admiral Kimmel, what can we do for you?
The Admiral continued to walk from the turbolift to stand in front of the Raven’s CO before speaking.
Vice Admiral Mc7_of_9, it is the view of Starfleet Command that you present a clear and present danger to the safety and security of not only the USS Raven and her crew, but the to the entire United Federation of Planets. I am hearby relieving you of Command and placing you under armed guard.
Nodding to the two security guards who had accompanied him in the turbolift, they stepped forward, placing on hand on their side arms.
Sir, if you’ll come with us please.
The sound of silence deafened all of those on the Birdge.
As he made the decision to use the transporter to get the Admiral, the turbo-lift doors opened ... Mc entered the Bridge, which was eerily silent as Torek briefed him. The uneasiness was broken by Ramius informing the two that Captain Worthing was about to come aboard. Mc requested Carl's presence in his ready room. ~~~~~~~~~~Re-entering the Bridge thirty five minutes later, neither man spoke as they took their seats. They were a little surprised to see Admiral Kimmel step out of the turbo-lift, Captain Worthing acknowledging him as she entered the lift, while Kimmel walked toward the Command area. "Admiral Kimmel .. What can we do for you ?" Mc asked, but Kimmel didn't speak until he was in front of the two Senior Officers .. "Vice Admiral Mc7_of_9 .. It is the view of Star fleet Command that you present a clear and present danger to the safety and security of not only the USS Raven and her crew but the to the entire United Federation of Planets .. Therefore .. I am hear-by relieving you of Command and placing you under armed guard." "What !" Carl said, almost jumping from his seat .. But Mc placed a hand on his arm, it was enough to silence the Executive Officer. Two Security Officers, looking embarrassed as they stepped forward, refused to look in the direction of the Security chief, but seemed to be looking into the middle-distance as one spoke .. "Sir .. If you would come with us .. Please." a hint of apology in his voice. Mc stood, giving a slight squeeze of Torek's arm as he did so .. No-one could quite believe what was happening, the silence almost deafening .. "Commander Torek ......" Mc said, not taking his eyes from Kimmel's, "...... Admiral .. Are you taking Command or will my First Officer ?" "Commander Torek will be in Command .. For the moment .." Kimmel said, with a brief nod to Torek, "We have .. Things to discuss." "Wait a moment !" Carl said, not liking this one bit, "You can't just relieve someone of Admi ......" "Do you wish to join the Admiral ?" Kimmel interrupted .. "Carl." Mc urged, "Look after the ship .. I'll speak to you shortly .. Be hospitable to our guests." his eyes flicking toward the view-screen, then looking at the two Security Officers, "Gentlemen." he finished, moving toward the turbo-lift that was being held open by one of them. Kimmel followed the three into the lift and the doors closed .. Opening a flood of questions .. "QUIET ...... Please ...... We have a ship out there and a LOT of things to consider .. Least of all what just happened .. OK .. We'll get answers just not at the moment .. The Admirals 'arrest' is a mistake I'm sure .. But for now .. Please do your jobs .. Keep speculation to zero .. And do not .. I repeat DO NOT speculate on what has occurred to anyone else .. It will get round soon enough without your help." Carl watched the faces of the Bridge Officers. he knew he could count on them .. Even now ... "Marko .. Whats the status of the Wolf ?" Torek said, looking at the ship on screen. "No change Commander." Ramius said. "OK .. Contact Captain Worthing .. Do it on a secure channel and pipe it to the ready room." he said, then headed for the ready room showing much more confidence than he actually felt ... 'Hells Bells' he thought to himself as he left the Bridge than sat at the Admirals desk waiting for Captain Worthing .. And he hoped ... Some answers .......... < tag : ALL > ... OK things are starting to happen .. Enjoy ..
As the two security officers took the admiral into custody and left the bridge. Jack couldn't help but feel some rage over not being able to command his team overwise. He stood in awkward silence as the XO was about to cause a raucus but then was calmed by Admiral Mc7. Then he just stared at the two junior members of the security team, who were unable to bring themselves to stare back.
Jack had wanted to question the officers taking his CO into custody but he knew it would do no good. As Mc was escorted off the bridge, Commander Torek gave the order to contact the Wolf’s CO and he was going to take it into the ready room. Jack wanted to go in there and demand to start an investigation for himself to prove the CO’s innocence, but he knew it would do no good as Commander Torek had requested that Speculation be kept to zero. That meant no poking noses in until ordered, Now though Jack just monitored the Wolf as they tried to make contact.
Carl drummed his fingers on the desk while awaiting the Comm. He reached for the screen as it activated ..
'SECURE COMM - ACCEPT'
"Computer .. Accept Comm .. Torek-Alpha-Two-Two-Gamma."
The screen cleared to show Captain Janice Worthing. She was in her ready room, looking ill at ease.
=^= What can I do for you Commander ? =^=
=^= Admiral Kimmel has just relieved Admiral Mc7 of duty =^=
Worthing remained totally silent on the screen, so Carl pushed for information ..
=^= You are fully aware that certain 'factions' within Star fleet are eager to rid the Federation of Borg Officers .. I want to know where you stand on the subject =^=
=^= I think the 'extent' of what i know is my concern .. Commander .. Please do NOT forget you are speaking to a Captain =^=
=^= Come off it .. CAPTAIN ! ...... You were over here less than an hour ago discussing this with Admiral Mc and myself =^=
He didn't give Worthing the chance to speak ...
=^= Did you know Kimmel was here to get the Admiral ? =^=
=^= No .. Not exactly .. In fact ...... I was under the impression they were here to arrest my Chief Engineer .. Mc arranged for the Wolf to play war games with the Raven .. Commander Kirk heard that Kimmel and Willard were on-board and started to worry .. I think it best if I take the Wolf as far away as possible in the circumstances =^=
=^= Can you give me time to speak to Admiral Mc7 ? =^=
=^= We'll remain here for the moment Commander .. Speak to Mc and re-assure him that whatever the issue within Star fleet command .. It will be investigated fully =^=
The Comm closed, It was plain that Worthing wasn't going to help Mc, at least, not willingly !.. Carl just about restrained himself from punching the desk in frustration ...
"Computer .. Current location of Admiral Mc7_of_9 ?"
"The admiral is currently in his quarters."
'Well there's a break' .. Torek thought, at least he was comfortable, and not confined to the Brig, so leaving the ready room, Carl headed for the turbo-lift ...
"Mr Ramius .. You have the Bridge." he said, as the doors closed ..
"Deck Two !" ..........
