Like I said elsewhere, I think the primary sickbay should be a two-storey facility. There should also be smaller secondary sickbays dotted around the ship. Perhaps it should have a waiting room?
Maybe we should also give the FO a ready room near the bridge? Since the ship is so big, might be best to have his office near the CO's and the centre of the action. Just a thought though. If the ship's going to seperate, a secondary command facility is a must.
Depending on the size of the ship, it might be nice to have something similar to Deep Space Nine's promenade on the ship, but having a bunch of merchants on board might make it harder for the ship to carry out some missions. Of course, they would probably be the same kind of missions that the families might cause difficulties for, so maybe it could work, I'm not sure, it could add something to being able to simm on the ship though, as well as emphasizing that it's not primarily a battleship, if that's what we decide on.
Illito, that's a good and original idea. I'd thought about it myself. There is the slight problem of there being no money in the federation, but there are still other ways we could fill up with a promenade.
I think first officers have had offices on federation starships for a while?
When interacting with alien cultures the federation has used money, since they sort of have to be able to pay for things if the other culture doesn't accept the whole 'we're over that now' explanation.
* Kirk stated that Starfleet had a lot invested in both he and Mr. Spock. In fact, Starfleet had 122,200-plus credits invested in Spock by the year end of 2267. (TOS: "Errand of Mercy", "The Apple").
* Uhura offers to purchase a tribble for 10 credits. (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles").
* When interacting with alien cultures, Federation citizens simply inform the aliens that they will be "paying" in Federation credits and the aliens get their true compensation through trade agreements between the two governments. Thus, Federation officers could buy drinks at Quark's Place without owning a single bit of latinum. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
* Beverly Crusher buys a roll of cloth, and has her account on the Enterprise-D billed. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")
* The Federation offered a sum of 1,500,000 credits for the Barzan wormhole. (TNG: "The Price")
* Quark sold his damaged shuttle Quark's Treasure for scrap, in the Sol system, and was given enough to pay for passage back to Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Little Green Men")
* The Bank of Bolias was a major financial institution, and Bolarus IX, a Federation member planet, apparantly has a market economy. (DS9: "Starship Down", "Who Mourns for Morn?")
* When he first entered Starfleet Academy, Benjamin Sisko beamed back to his home in New Orleans so often that he later claimed to have used up a month's worth of "transporter credits." (DS9: "Explorers")
What if we had non-Federation merchants who were offered the opportunity to do business on a Federation starship, not only with the crew, but with planets they go to, and other people, I'm not sure though.
I don't think having merchants on board would work, but there could be a centralised area with: A messhall (with a real cook) Crew lounge with bar (Like Ten forward) Holodecks Hairdressing and beautician (As seen on TNG) Arboretums Sports complex (off some kind)
According to design plans, the Sovereign class had a mirror of the Ready Room for the XO. Presumably it was for the CO on duty who was not the captain as well. That way the other three shift CO's had a ready room without comprimising the Captain's privacy.
what about an officer's lounge? a off bridge relaxation lounge for bridge officers- same idea as the captian's ready rokm, just for everybody else. Put it in front of the bridge, and the confrence room to the back, with the ready room to one side and the XO's office to the other.
The bridge itself should have layers, lie the TOS movie one. much better then the sloped bridges we see in TNG- it centralizes things. Also, One chair in the middle, and nottwo off to the side of it, bu lower and a bit farther away from the center chair. All stations should face forward, like on voyager.
Main enginering: big. powerful. and manual overides for just about everything. Warp core in the center, three decks, main one on the center with a paltform extending to the core with the pool table and such.
No, this would just be for the bridge officers- a ready room ro brige officers, basically. easy chairs looking at the stars, a little cordoned off area for private conversations.... But it serves the same function as a ready room, just for everyone else- a room just off the bridge to relax in. Remember that the days can be boring on a starship.
I think the idea of a two-storey Sickbay is awesome! I wonder why it's never been thought of before, it would look really cool and would allow for a larger medical team/ science team. I also love the idea of an FO "ready room" as it were. It's a pain in the neck having to trudge all the way down to my office... lol... I like the concept of an Observation lounge on the top of the ship, however, if this is to be more of a military vessel (it may not be of course) then I don't think that kind of set up would work. On the sci-fi show "Andromeda" most vessels in the High Guard fleet have an Observation Deck, it does not necessarily take up an entire deck however it allows for relaxation, ambassadorial functions, meeting of the crew etc... If we had this sort of thing on Deck 2, then I think that would work.
No, put the distinguished persons seat there too. center the captian. Elevate the captain on a platform- look at TOS of ideas- steps, not ramps. Captain at the top in the center of a pit, outside stations the same level, but a rail. distinctly seprate. Helm in center, two stations like on TNG.
My idea about the bridge would be more along the lines of the Voyager ... with the helm in the front middle CO and XO behind ... stations around the edges. I do not think that there should be a pit ... the helm should have a much of, if not more a view of the view screen as any other seat.
One idea that I had is that the helm would be forward of the main circle of the bridge with the view screen surrounding him/her ... kinda like if the helmsman was sitting in an imax type theater.
