accually, I like that. not a perfectly round saucer, but thin, and blunted. I like that shape, and it looks fast.
If you want, you can draw more, but that looks good to me... a very clean design, with obvious influinces from starflet, yet it's distinct. Too bad the Titan design contest is over... that's a pretty ship.
However, more phaser strips would be nice for better coverage....
Accually, they look pretty good on that ship I just don't like how they look on the Galaxy I guess... That ship wasn't very wel designed, IMHO. If I could redesign it, it would have had a very different saucer, and the naccles would have beenon struts tapered back and extending above the saucer... I guess the bend doesn't look tooo bad if done right.
What I'm getting at is that ship is really pretty, and don't let my earlyer post get in the way of it... I like that ship.
Phaser banks and so on I didn't really think too much about. I just put those more obvious ones on and there's a torpedo launcher on the little pod above the bridge. Beyond that I assumed you'd have at least another launcher on the bottom of the saucer and under the rear large shuttle bay. Also you'd have phasers elsewhere (like under the saucer as well) but I didn't bother too much with arming it yet.
Deflector would be under the saucer somewhat like the Intrepid but wouldn't detach with the saucer. I suppose the pod with the torpedo launcher could in fact have the secondary one for the saucer but no launcher at the front.
But I do really like Jared's ship. I just thought I'd put out there what I made...
It's a good try there and does look like something that could easily have come from TOS. Maybe with some refinement you could give the design to the ERA people to come up with a name for and use as an NPC ship if it's not taken as final design.
If you want it drawn into the same style as my one then just say and I'd be happy to give it a go.
The one on the curren t design is sort of rounded... it's blunted, but it's sleek and sharp at the same time. the phasers and such can be wored out later- I'll take your drawing and use paint or something to add a few where they would be located... and transporter emmitters... I'll do that soon.
the black ar phaser srips, the yellow are transporter emmitters, the red are the impulse exausts, the blue is the aux. deflector, and the red and green dots are formation lights. Red are port, Green, starboard. also, I put a shuttlebay entrance on the pod on top- I don't know if we want to use that or not, but considering how large we're considering, I think an aux. shuttlebay on the saucer isn't a bad idea.
then one question: do we like what we're seeing so far with the design? should we go in that direction?
I like it and think we should continue in that direction. we got a lot of ideas out during the brainstorming. this shouldn't be brainstorming II- this is the design thread... present designs, and ask, 'do we like that?'
I spent ages trying to make the saucer fit right as the shape and after some modification now have found a way, namely by adding the deflector dish to the front of the saucer, not the engineering hull.
I've done a general redesign of the ship because it occurred to me that we're designing in the wrong scale since this is meant to be a huge ship by Starfleet standards. Given that the Intrepid classes have trouble targetting shuttles, a ship of this size would have trouble targetting Intrepid classes and similar small starships. It would also be woefully outmanouevred in any field of battle because of the sheer size compared to the usual. Starfleet ships are small because they dogfight. This would be a bomber by comparison with all the same weaknesses.
I still need to upload the pictures, but the basic structure is now that of a battleship/carrier, not a fighter. As well as the usual phaser banks/torpedo bays, the design now features pulse turrets, large anti-capital ship (something the same size as this)/anti-ground turrets, protected bridge, saucer nacelles, different main nacelle structure and a hexagonal 'engineering' hull with a large fly through fighter bay.
The rough shape remains the same and the design from before might well work as a standard size ship, but I do think here we should look more at the less conventional designs due to the much larger size.
My point was about performance in a fight, not the focus of the design. Basically its size makes its manoeuvrability and ability to target so poor that it would lose any given fight. The only answer is quick firing turrets as seen on bomber aircraft which suffer from similar combat problems. That way each turret can be manned by trained staff and not have to rely wholly on the computer's less than perfect targetting, although that would be an option as well.
As for general focus; the appearance should always be something of a battleship. Combat is the only guaranteed time the ship would be involuntarily in danger so is the only scenario it MUST be as prepared for as possible. Since scanners and sensors tend to be fairly discreet and don't need to be mounted all over the ship, the outside is essentially the combat area. Thus the outside will look aggressive but the interior may have a wholly different focus. On standard size ships the phasers are equally discreet be design, but as mentioned before, this ship needs a wholly different approach.
