I dont' think so. and I dont' thnk we're going to use latin. We might make up something by an alien, but the name attached shoudl be supposedly a historic figure or somesuch.

It was a good idea, but we already went over the Latin thing ... it was shot down because it's been done so many times before. Nothing personal.
I still champion the lit or military quotes ... but there is a good chance that these things will never be decided as such things have yet to be even slightly narrowed down.

the idea I'm chamipooining right now is an "alien" quote. We throw out philosiophy, nad then when we decide on one, we decide on some made up alien to credit it to. Adorian, Bajorian, ect.
here's an idea for a quote like that.
"Destiny and fate is dark, yet there is the occasional beam in the darkness, guiding up to serenity."
"You may destroy our bodies, our minds- but the dreams that they are made of live on."
"Today is a new journey of wonder"
find something we like, and credit it to whoever. But I HATE the idea of a millitary quote on this ship, simply becasue it's not a millitary ship. this is going to be built for exploration, not destruction.

The military is not all about destruction. After all, if it wasn't for the military we would have never had the resources to jump into space. Also, military discipline and order are what make a starship run properly and they also help to create lasting bonds and comraderie within the crew. Few other things have the ability to bring out the best in people.

Okay, let me put it this way: on a ship of exploration into the beautiful reaches of sapce, would a poet's words about sapce or a sttigist's millitary inspiration be more apporopriate? the former, I would think. that's why most of the quotes on canon ships are NOT millitary in nature. Tennyson is on Voyager, masefeild for the definat 9the most warlike of them all) as for millitary quotes, there are NONE 0, zippo, nilch, None! leading me to belive we shouldn't use one either.

forgive the double post, but I found what I belive to be the perfect quote for a s 47 ship.

That doesn't mean that a military quote could not be used. That also does not mean that the military is a soley destructive organization.

If it wasn't for the military we wouldn't know half of what we do about the Classical era in North Africa. The French Foreign Legion recon photographs are still the commonly used ones since paranoid governments won't let aerial photography take place. I believe the only reliable maps of the various currents and channels around England is still the Royal Navy's and in Greece the national map is made by the army. Also, Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote the Charge of the Light Brigade which was a tribute to the bravery of the men involved, not the actual war.

"I am obliged to sweat them tonight, so that I may save their blood tomorrow."
"Under a good general there are no bad soldiers."
"The hammer shatters glass but forges steel."
... very Kirk, very Picard.
All three are military quotes and do more to encourage people to do their best and be the best ... and do not revolve around destruction.

Raleva, I really like that last quote you gave, I know you gave it a while ago, but I haven't looked through the posts recently..and I agree that a military quote doesn't mean the ship is going to be charging into battle without thinking about it ahead of time.
So if I were to vote for one of the quotes I would do the one just given: "The hammer shatters glass but forges steel."
And because someone mentioned narrowing down choices and I think it's a good idea I'm going to list all the ones I like enough to be proud to serve on a ship with this as their Motto/Quote.
Of course, as I mentioned: "The hammer shatters glass but forges steel." Then, as others I like: "The road ahead never gives away a promise" (2nd favorite) "When you are the anvil, be patient. When you are the hammer, strike." (3rd favorite)
Perhaps others can also list 3 to 5 of their favorites?

I really like the hammer quote too ... but the first one I have there ... ("I am obliged to sweat them tonight, so that I may save their blood tomorrow.") is a family mantra, I come from what could be considered a military family. I kinda dislike the general assumption that military=destruction and devastation ... my family got enough of that stuff during and after Vietnam.
And I have two cousins at the Virgina Military Institute that want to be aviators because military pilots have the inside track when it comes to joining the astronaut core. I had to say something about them ... just 'cause I tend to be rather proud of them both ... and 'cause one of them is nearing his graduation. Gotta show that family love ...
Oh, I am also Raleva ... for those that are curious ... lol.
Since we are limited to up to five quotes, here are my other three top choices:
No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. John Donne
How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't! The Tempest, 5. 1
The friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel. Hamlet, 1. 3

I realise this thread has been dead for half a year, but I just couldn't help myself.
"The battle is not over until you have won it" (The Farseer Trilogy)
"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more" (Henry V, Act III, Scene I)
"Long live the Federation" (Paraphrasing Kor from DS9: Once More Unto the Breach)

I think if we continue with this, we should do a narrowing down tread- take the ideas we like (use something there, make up something and credit it to some alien in fedaration history) and decide wich ideas we like. then get the individual quotes from those Ideas and Vote. Or Wait till the ship's almost done and start debating these things then.

everyone. we take all the catagories on here, exept for the ones that general consensus has ruled out. While I don't like millitary quotes, I seem to be the only really opposed to them right now.
I would see a poll like this:
Literature/ religious quotes inspirational quotes millitary quotes make up our own and attribute it to a fictional person in ST universe.
I may be missing some, but that's the gist. Then we would debate within the categories that we chose. top 2 I would think. That would help narrow this thing down a lot. And it would be a new thread, so people would only bother pulling the good ones out of here, because those would be the ones worth pulling out.
The thread is a beast, that would narrow it down.

It's not just you, Jeff. I also think that one of the top two would be preferable to a military quote. That's just my personal opinion though. The result should be reached through consensus.
