OLYMPIA SICKBAY Dr Michael Hall had been running tests on the specimen of blood that his new superior officer had sent up he was making good progress when his long time colleague had entered sickbay her name was Janet Reilly Lieutenant, Jg Janet Reilly to be exact Dr Hall had known her nose had been put out of joint when she wasn’t chosen to be Chief Medical Officer, She was a good enough doctor but her compassion could use a little work it seemed she cared more about her career than helping patients. Janet walked up to Dr. Hall and said in a very strict tone.
“Report Mr. Hall”
Michael turned around and looked at Dr Reilly with an expression that could sour milk he hated being called Mr but Janet didn’t seem to mind the look in fact it seemed to amuse her a smirk had formed across her lips she was the kind of woman that no matter the situation her makeup was perfect and her hair pulled tightly in a pony tail without a single hair out of place. Michael responded. “We are analysing a sample of blood sent up from the planet by Dr. Crane where have you been we could have used your help and Dr. Crane was looking for you” For the first time in their conversation Dr. Reilly’s smirk had disappeared it was at the mention of Dr. Crane. She said
“I’m sure he was do you know anything about our new Chief Medical Officer Michael?”
Dr. Hall thought for a moment then responded, “No why”
Janet’s Smirk returned when she said. “According to his records he isn’t even competent enough to save his own wife from an illness Starfleet sure made a mistake by passing me over and I won’t rest until I show them that”
Janet walked away and into one of sickbays adjoining labs Michael was shaking his head he hoped Dr. Crane was ready to defend his job because Michael Hall knew he was in for a fight. GANESH 3
Dr. Crane had been walking for about half an hour when they got to the mouth of a cave in the side of a steep cliff the top of which was covered in perfect white snow Jack looked back at the mouth of the cave and shuddered he couldn’t even see five metres in it was that dark. Jack turned to Commander Rose and asked.
“Are you ready to enter Commander?” As he passed her a wrist torch.

=^= Commander Tan to Engineering =^=
=^= Engineering .. Lieutenant K'noor =^=
=^= Lieutenant .. Get someone up to the Bridge immediately .. The MVAM systems have been tampered with from an 'external' source =^=
=^= I'll get someone there right now Commander .. Engineering out =^=
Joel nodded, he was going to be grateful for the help in this, as Tan suspected, it was a little beyond his expertise .. He set-up a shield harmonic to prevent any further 'intrusions' into the Olympias' computers, then waited for the Engineering Technician ..
=/\=This is Commander Voreth of the IRW T'vana to the USS Olympia. I request a correspondence with your captain to discuss our mutual misunderstanding.=/\=
=/\= This is Captain Smith here. Mutual understanding Commander? I'll tell you what I want to discuss. I want to know why you are still holding Federation citizens hostage aboard your vessel. And more to the point, why are there now TWO vessels cloaked? =/\=
Huebner was immensely grateful for the help of Commander Tan and soon a young engineer in driving out the remote presence in the MVAM. He knew that especially from a tactical standpoint that this system was absolutely CRITICAL.
While still waiting for a response from the Romulan Commander, Huebner saw that the turbolift doors to the bridge opened revealing a young man with a chief Warrant Officer's pip on the yellow collar. Striding up to Tan and Huebner the man introduced himself, "Sirs, I am Chief Kelley, I understand that you are having some programming difficulty and I am here to help."
"Glad to have you here Chief!", Huebner replied and made as much work space at his console as possible for Chief Kelley to work his magic, while maintaining the security of the ship.
After a few intense minutes of incredibly fast work the Chief said, "Commander, Lieutenant, I have completed my programming and I believe that I have removed the remote access of the MVAM system. However the invasion, for lack of a better word may have caused some damage to the system programming. I will move to the second Science station and begin reviewing the program for any flaws. This search will take a while, but it will allow me to verify that the system is fully operational. You should still be able to use the system in a pinch, but I'm not sure how effective it will be."
Commander Tan and Lieutenant Huebner thanked the young chief. Huebner regarded his console and began to modulate the shield frequencies to hopefully prevent a recurrence of the invasion. After a few short keystrokes he made his report to the Captain.
Huebner said, "Captain Smith, Chief Kelley was able to eject the remote access to our systems, though he believes that this "Invasion" may have caused some damage to the system. He is checking the program line by line as we speak, which he reports will take some time. Chief Kelley also reports that he thinks that if necessary we could use MVAM, but he makes no guarantees about it's effectiveness. I believe, Sir, that with the tactical preparations I have made that even if MVAM does not work properly we should still have a fair chance of surviving a battle, should one arise."

Ganash III
Starfleet Command did have an amazing ability to reassign people at the most inconvenient moments, a message had come through saying that Captain Shuarak had been reassigned and had to report to his new post with utmost urgency. Crystal had muttered a few choice phrases under her breath but of course he had gone. Apparently there was a new SMO all ready on route.
Crystal, Dr Crane, Tonja and the marines (except the two who were finishing up the scans at the campsite) headed towards the cave system. “Are you ready to enter Commander?” Crystal had been a bits distracted for a moment, she knew this was a bit of a habit of hers; while it was useful for getting inspiration in the lab it could be a danger in the field. The rips in her uniform showed that all too well. She nodded curtly and accepted the wrist torch the doctor passed her.
One of the marines to the lead and they went in. It took a while for Crystal's eye's to adjust to the new level of lighting but the pathway ahead was quiet clear. They went a couple of hundred meters down the passageway following Tonja'a directions. Suddenly Crystal stopped, looking up the passage way ahead. There was a faint hum in the air and there seemed to be some sort of light ahead.
Crystal directed everyone into a side passage. "Any readings on what's ahead she asked?"
************************************************** Aboard the IRW Erkana
Centurion Tanara sighed quietly to herself not only had her probe into the federation ship's systems been very quickly detected and removed but it seemed that she had also ended up in the wrong system. Such was her unfamiliarity with federation systems. Still she had to press on, she would never get another chance like this.....

Commander Voreth realised that the situation here was more complicated than Imperial High Command had led him to believe. They knew of his ambition and of Danath's ruthlessness it would well suit their purposes to play one against the other to ensure that the strongest and cleverest survived. Still this Captain Smith showed spirit and as the humans said 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. Now it was just a matter of working out which of the two was his enemy.
=/\=The Imperial High Command sent me to oversee Commander Danath's actions. They believe he is a little irrational=/\= Voreth paused trying to decide how much he could safely reveal. =/\=If Commander Danath has your people then I will try to help you recover them, I do not hold out much hope for their survival though.=/\=

David too knew the value of the effected system, and could remember when he too was a new young Lieutenant .. As they began work, an Engineer arrived.
"Sirs .. Chief Kelley .. I understand that you are having some programming difficulty and I am here to help."
It took Kelley less than fifteen minutes to re-initialize the MVAM systems, and the Engineer began to gather up his tools, but David asked the Warrant Officer to remain at the system control for the time being .. If there was another attempt, he wanted someone on it in seconds .. Tan remained quiet as Heubner made his report to the Captain. Then informed both Officers that he was returning to the Bridge, Heubner stating he would do the same ... As they left, Kelley was again removing the panels to give him access .. 'May as well be ready' he thought, sitting on the deck and double-checking his equipment ...
As Tan and Heubner reached the Bridge, David was surprised to see the Captain speaking to a Romulan Commander ..
=^= ...... utual understanding Commander .. I'll tell you what I want to discuss .. I want to know why you are still holding Federation citizens hostage aboard your vessel .. BUT more to the point .. Why are there now TWO vessels cloaked ? =^=
David took his position, and after a nod to the Captain, looked at the Romulan on the view screen ..
He seemed less than eager to reply to Smiths' query that was certain .. But when he did, the reply was surprising ..
=^= The Imperial High Command sent me to oversee Commander Danath's actions .. They believe he is a little irrational =^= Voreth paused, trying to decide how much he could safely reveal, seemed to make up his mind and continued to speak, =^=If Commander Danath has your people then I will try to help you recover them .. I do not hold out much hope for their survival though =^=
The consequences of two Romulan vessels firing on each other was too serious to think about, it could, and possibly would, lead to civil war on Romulus. But the consequences if the hostages are had not survived, were deadly ! ..........

Dr Jack Crane walked alongside Commander Rose behind a Marine and Tonja when a faint hum and a light hitting the wall Jack couldn’t see what was causing the noise or what the source of light was because there was a bend in the passageway. Commander Rose ushered the group into a side passage and asked.
"Any readings on what's ahead" she asked?
One of the Marines holding a tricorder responded with. “We can’t get any readings all I can tell you is there is a faint energy signature Ma’am” Commander Rose said. “Lets check it out”
As They continued down the original passage two marines were in front of Commander Rose and Jack Crane behind them were the remaining Marines and Tonja, as they turned the corner Jack heard a machine power up just in time to see two Romulan phaser turrets that were hanging on the roof turn and point at the group. Jack grabbed Commander Rose and dragged her down as he dropped to the floor just as he did the two phaser turrets fired over them and hit a Marine in the back she was knocked back about three metres the Marines standing next to her pulled up their phaser rifles and fired before the turrets could fire again. The turrets exploded in flames.
Jack was on his knees when they exploded and his shoulder was hit with a piece of shrapnel that went flying when the turrets exploded he gripped his left shoulder and looked at it as the blood started to seep through his shoulder he thought about treating him self when he turned around to see three marines gathered around a Marine female who was laying on the ground Jack got up and ran to her as he dropped to his knees to check he didn’t need a tricorder to see she was dead the phaser pulses had hit her square in the chest Jack turned to Commander Rose who had come up behind him and Jack sadley shook his head. Jack stood up and looked at her Marine comrades and said.
“I am sorry there is nothing I can do”
Commander Rose pointed to Jack shoulder wound and said. “Are you okay Doctor”
Jack looked again at his shoulder but before he could answer a Marine from up ahead called out and said.
“We have a person over here I think it is one of the archeological team she is badly hurt”
Jack and Commander Rose ran up the pathway and the walls began to get further apart and they entered a small circle shaped area that had two pathways leading upwards on the left hand side lay a Bajoran female Jack ran over and ran his tricorder over her and stood up to tell Commander Rose that she needed to be transported to the ship when Jack felt light headed and collapsed to the floor from the blood loss he had lost more than he thought the last thing Jack remembered hearing was Commander Rose yell.
“Pick them up we can’t transport them tho the ship in these caves”.
Jack felt himself being picked up by a marine and he passed out.....

Crystal stood at the mouth of the cave, she new she should be in shock but she was functioning okay, no doubt the shock would come later. =/\=Commander Rose to Olympia, beam Dr Crane and the nearest life sign to him directly to sickbay.=/\= She paused and waited as they vanished in a transporter haze. =/\=Apparently the Romulans left us a surprise down here, some automated gun turrets. Doctor Crane is injured and Corporal Marta Hains is dead.=/\= The flatness of her voice surprised her, she hoped she hadn't become used to violence. She was also surprised that she could remember the dead woman's name. =/\=We have recovered a Danar Sala but she too is badly injured.=/\= The dead marine vanished in a transporter haze as one of her comrades organised transport to the morgue.
Tag: Captain Smith / Someone on the bridge
If Crystal was honest she was angry with herself, it had been her idea, her orders that they proceed. Now there was one dead and one injured. Crystal felt the weight of Corporal Hains's death and knew she would be writing a letter to the woman's next of kin at some point soon. She had been warned that that was the worst part of command, she hadn't expected to experience it so soon. Doctor Crane had only been caught with the shrapnel because he had taken the time to knock her out of the way, so his injures were on her conscience also.
=/\=I'd like to continue investigating, the Romulans obviously have something to hide down here and I want to know what it is. We'll be more careful now.=/\=

It took no more than a few moments for the Romulans to reply to Steve
=/\=The Imperial High Command sent me to oversee Commander Danath's actions. They believe he is a little irrational. If Commander Danath has your people then I will try to help you recover them, I do not hold out much hope for their survival though.=/\=
Steve was beginning to get a little irritated. =/\= We WILL get our people back, and they WILL be alive Commander. What I am unsure of is how exactly you plan to help us to recover them? Not wanting to sound like I don't trust you, but.....well, I just don't trust you. To have one, and then suddenly TWO ships appear in our vicinity, both of which are cloaked...that doesn't sit well with me at all. We will work on a few solutions and get back to you in due time, unless you come up with something first. Olympia out. =/\=
Before the Romulan commander could reply, Steve had the communications cut. He let out a deep breath. "Anyone got any ideas how to get our crew back, WITHOUT firing on either of the ships?" Steve asked the bridge crew in general, adding the last bit for Joel's benefit, just in case he came up with a solution that involved a fire-fight.
<Bridge personnel>
Steve was about to reply when the comms opened. =/\=Commander Rose to Olympia, beam Dr Crane and the nearest life sign to him directly to sickbay. Apparently the Romulans left us a surprise down here, some automated gun turrets. Doctor Crane is injured and Corporal Marta Hains is dead. We have recovered a Danar Salar but she too is badly injured.=/\=
Steve dropped his head to his chest and after a moment he got out of his chair, tapping David on the shoulder and signaled for him to contact the transporter room
=/\= Acknowledged Commander. Transport will be underway within a few moments. I was hoping that we didn't have any casualties...but unfortunately, sometimes we just cannot prevent everything. =/\= Steve could sense that Crystal wasn't happy. =/\= I am sure there wasn't anything you could have done, so try not to take it too hard on yourself. Is there anything else to report? =/\=
=/\=I'd like to continue investigating, the Romulans obviously have something to hide down here and I want to know what it is. We'll be more careful now.=/\=
=/\= Understood, proceed. Hopefully you will find some more of the missing people. We may get a bit busy up here soon, but don't worry about us. Good luck, Smith out. =/\=
Steve reclaimed his seat, with neither the XO nor the Counsellor there, it seemed quite lonely in the command section. As he sat there, a stray idle thought rushed through his head about Arya. He was trying to stay optimistic about her condition and was hoping to have some good news about her when the Olympia returned to the Starbase.

SICKBAY
Dr. Mike Hall was about to leave sickbay to go to the mess hall when a message came through over the COMM. Channel.
“Sickbay we are transporting an injured crewman and one of the archaeologists from the planets surface directly to sickbay”
Dr Hall tapped his Comm. Badge and said.
“Can you please contact Dr Crane and ask him if he has any further information on the chemicals used on the archeological team please”
The voice over the comm. Channel grew soft as the man replied.
“I am sorry Mike Dr Crane is the injured crewman” Just as the comm. Channel closed three bodies were beamed onto the sickbay floor Mikes eyes immediately locked on to his superior officer who had a wound in his left shoulder Mike and a few nurses rushed over and lifted the two living bodies onto the biobeds. TWENTY MINUTES LATER
Jacks eyes opened to see Dr Hall looking down at him Jack swung his legs over the bio-bed and stood up and asked.
“My condition Mike”
Mike smiled as he replied confidently.
‘We removed a piece of metal from your shoulder you lost a lot of blood but you will be fine the archaeologist you sent up on the other hand is a different story”.
Jack and Mike walked over to the main bio-bed where the bajoran woman was sleeping. Mike continued to explain her situation
“She is suffering from exypolomine overdose she got violent so we sedated her the only thing she said was it was too powerful to lets the romulans have it”
Jack sighed heavily and walked out of the main door and made his way to the bridge.
BRIDGE
As Jack walked over to the centre of the bridge Captain Smith looked up and asked how Jack was feeling.
“I am better Sir thank you I am sorry about corporal Haines” <Tag Captain Smith>
“Sir Danar Salar didn’t give us much she only said that something the Romulans were searching for is to powerful for us to let them find”
<Tag Captain Smith>
“Permission to rejoin the away team”
Captain Smith nodded and Jack made his way off the bridge and to the transporter room.
GANASH 3
Dr Crane beamed down at the mouth of the cave and flashed his light into the cave Jack ran down the passageway until he heard the team up ahead he had ran abou two kilometres in when he approached the team the marines wiped around and pointed their phasers at Jack he raised his hands as he said.
“Don’t shoot it’s just me” Jack walked up to Commander Rose and asked
“Have you found anything else in here Commander” <Tag Commander Rose>

=^= Commander Rose to Olympia .. Beam Dr Crane and the nearest life sign to him directly to sickbay .. Apparently the Romulans left us a surprise down here .. Automated gun turrets. Doctor Crane is injured and Corporal Marta Hains is dead .. We have recovered a Danar Salar but she too is badly injured =^=
David was already contacting both Transporter room and sick-bay as Steven placed his hand on his shoulder ..
=^= Acknowledged Commander .. Transport will be underway within a few moments ...... =^= The Captain spoke to Crystal as Tan arranged for the dead and injured to be transported from the surface ..
"Sir .." Tan offered an idea, "Given our targeting capabilities .. We should be able to lock-onto and destroy those turrets."
Smith thought about it for a second, then nodded. Let Crystal know what you're doing, then destroy all you can David. The Captain said, throwing a look of annoyance at the view-screen, before taking his seat ..
=^= Commander Rose .. I need you all to find as much cover as possible .. I will be firing on the automated turrets in thirty seconds unless you state otherwise =^=
=^= Oh .. I'm sure thirty seconds is more than enough time for us to find cover Commander ...... Just ...... Make sure your aim is good ! =^=
~~~~~~~~~~
=^= Ten seconds =^= Tan said, glancing at the Captain, who silently nodded confirmation.
=^= We're ready =^=
The Olympia fired twenty two times in rapid succession to the surface of the planet. Tan was pleased to confirm twenty two direct hits ..
=^= Captain to Rose .. You still with us Commander ? =^= Steven said, edgily.
A few seconds delay, then a cacophony of choking and coughing sounds filled the Bridge ...
=^= Yes ...... Olympia ...... We're still ...... Here ...... Though one or two of those shots came ...... Closer than we thought =^=
=^= Good to hear you Commander =^= Smith said, relieved, then turned to Tan ..
"Keep a close eye on those Romulans David .. There's no saying how they will react now we've taken a few pot-shots at their armament."
"Aye Sir." Tan replied ..........
The casualties had gone back up to the Olympia, Crystal had received permission to continue the investigation. She was however wary and not keen to go blundering into a situation blind again. She, Tonja and the remaining marines had circled round the cave system, they had found another pair of gun emplacements, the Olympia had taken those out before any further damage could be done to the away team. Despite this they had found nothing else, they had to go back ito the caves. Crystal wasn't sure she wanted to. Well, she was sure she wanted to find out what on Earth was going on here but she wasn't sure she was able to risk anyone else's life to do so.
She swallowed hard, hoping that no one noticed although she guessed that Tonja could tell she was worried; the half bajoran knew her too well. Everyone was on high alert.
They entered the chamber where they had found Danar Sala and examined it carefully, aside from the still slightly smoking remains of the gun emplacements that the marines had destroyed earlier there was nothing here certainly nothing the Romulans would be so keen to protect. They pressed onwards. Crystal wondered how far these tunnels went, their seemed to be alcacite in the rocks that was limiting the scanning range of their tricorders.
Suddenly there was the sound of footsteps in the tunnel. Crystal turned drawing her phaser in a surprisingly smooth movement. The marine beat her to the aiming but then they all had weapons out ready.
Doctor Crane, walked into the room, Crystal was pleased to see him on his feet again but worried how close he had come to being shot. “Don’t shoot it’s just me” Crystal gave him a wry look. "How about calling ahead next time?"
“Have you found anything else in here Commander”
Crystal sighed "don't yet, we were just about to move on. Do you have any information for us from our rescued victim? How is she anyway?" Crystal looked at him critically for a second "And how are you, don't tell me you got medically cleared?" She didn't intend to scare the Doctor but she did need to know if he was still feeling any after effects from his injury.
The comm signal cut of and Commander Voreth settled back into his chair again. the human captain certain had spirit and would certainly make this mission interesting. However, Voreth knew Captain Smith was underestimating Commander Danath's viciousness. Coming out and telling him that he was trusted was a good sign. Voreth though he was going to enjoy conversing with the human captain.
Aboard the IRW Erkana
Tanara was very worried Commander Danath was raving again, somthing about what the federation crew were doing on the surface. She didn't know for certain what had been going on on Ganash III and she wasn't sure she really did want to know. She didn't know what would happen to the Commander, the Erkana or her crew once Commander Voreth started on them. There was sure to be violence and she did not want to be involved.
She continued her work hoping to stay out of the way of the Commander, he had been convinced at some expense, not to do anything to the federation ship while Commander Voreth was here. Of course that meant he wanted to 'deal with' Commander Voreth and that Voreth would not take lightly.
She had finally tapped into the comm system of the federation starship and sent her message, she knew this was probably her only chance to do this. =/\=USS Olympia this is Centurion Tanara aboard the IRW Erkana. I may be able to help you, I would like to defect. Please respond on this frequency.=/\=
The die was cast now she had to hope the Commander didn't find out or she would be executed.
After Dr. Crane lowered his hands Commander Rose asked.
"not yet, we were just about to move on. Do you have any information for us from our rescued victim? How is she anyway?"
Jack noticed the Commander look at him with some scepticism before asking.
"And how are you, don't tell me you got medically cleared?"
Jack smiled a fake smile before answering
“Danar is sedated at the moment she got violent with my staff effects from the exypolomine, the only thing we got out of her was that there is something down here we can’t let the Romulans get a hold of Dr Hall is with her know I have full confidence in his ability to find a way to get her on her feet again, He has more training in Bajoran medicine than I do”
Jack walked closer to Commander Rose and pointed to a little distance from the group Dr. Crane and Commander Rose walked a small distance from the main group when they got there Jack lowered his voice so the main group could not hear him.
“I have lost some mobility in my left arm it is harder to move than usual the only way to fix it is micro-surgery unfortunately the only one on my staff qualified to perform such delicate surgery is me as long as the surgery is performed in the next two weeks I will regain all mobility in my arm any longer an I run the risk of it becoming permanent”
<Tag Commander Rose>
The group continued down the pathways until they reached an exit as they walked into the sunlight the group was greeted by the sight of a large structure that appeared to be very old it was about one hundred and fifty metres away, The structure was at least five stories tall and the base of it seemed to have been largely dug out of the ground by the Romulans or the Archaeological team Jack couldn’t tell. At the entrance stood four Romulan guards Jack pointed to them and asked.
“What do you think Commander as he looked at Commander Rose.
OOC: This post does not contain Jack Crane please read the above post for what Jack is up to ;D
USS OLYMPIA- SICKBAY
Dr. Mike Hall stood in the Chief Medical Officers office looking through Dr. Crane’s medical journals, searching for a way to help the Bajoran female whom he had learned was named Danar Sala. Mike knew he didn’t really have the expertise to treat her Mike’s expertise were in general medicine not psychological medicine. However Mike was determined find a way to help the poor woman, she had been seriously mistreated by the Romulans and helping her was the least they could do, that and if Mike could get some information out of her it may help the away team down on the planet, Dr. Crane had already been injured and there was still a marine whom needed an autopsy, Mike would be doing that but Jack Crane had specifically said he would tend to the death certificate Mike knew that Dr. Crane was the most ideological and sensitive person that he had met. Mike also knew that Jack took his job of protecting the crews health very seriously and when he failed to save someone he needed to be the one who dealt with the sad consequences.
Mike had found some journals on the effects of exypolomine that Jack had in his office the only problem was most of the journals dealt with the effects on Romulans and Vulcans, no Bajoran had been exposed to the truth serum before never mind overdosed on it. Mike knew what he had to do but he didn’t like it he reached up and tapped his comm.. badge and said.
“Mike to Dr. Reilly I could really use your help with Danar Sala Ma’am”
Mike waited a moment before he heard Janets response.
“I will be down in a moment”
Mike could have sworn he heard anger in her voice she was probably off scheming a way to become CMO at the moment. Mike left Jacks office and entered the main sickbay treatment area only to see Lt. Jg Janet Reilly standing there with her arms crossed and a very sour look on her face.
“where is Jack”
She asked demandingly.
“Dr. Crane rejoined the away team Ma’am”
Mike answered emphasizing his use of Jack Cranes title.
After a short while of talking the problem over and ignoring Janets insults towards Jack and himself he knew he had the only solution to Danar Sala’s problem Mike looked at Janet and said.
“Dr Crane won’t like it”
Janet sighed a frustrated and disgusted sigh before saying.
“I am not authorising it if it doesn’t work he should be the one who’s neck is on the chopping block”
Janet left and Mike turned and looked at the Bajoran woman and let out a small sigh he knew it was her only chance at normality again, he only hoped Jack Crane would be brave enough to allow the procedure even with it’s risks....
“Danar is sedated at the moment she got violent with my staff effects from the exypolomine, the only thing we got out of her was that there is something down here we can’t let the Romulans get a hold of Dr Hall is with her know I have full confidence in his ability to find a way to get her on her feet again, He has more training in Bajoran medicine than I do” Crystal nodded, she wished there had been more information but they had to go with what they had. She waited for him to answer the rest of her question.
He pointed a little way away from the main group, he obviously didn't want to share this information with anyone, Crystl couldn't blame him for that and obliged by moving away with him.
“I have lost some mobility in my left arm it is harder to move than usual the only way to fix it is micro-surgery unfortunately the only one on my staff qualified to perform such delicate surgery is me as long as the surgery is performed in the next two weeks I will regain all mobility in my arm any longer an I run the risk of it becoming permanent” Crystal pondered that for a second and then went with her initial judgement. "If you feel up to it you can stay on the away mission," Doctor Crane nodded in response. "I doubt you'll need the encouragement but in thirteen days time if you haven't had the surgery I'll be suspending your duties until you do." She smiled intending her words as a promise to help him rather than a threat. She was pretty sure he understood.
The group continued down the pathways until they reached an exit as they walked into the sunlight the group was greeted by the sight of a large structure that appeared to be very old it was about one hundred and fifty metres away, The structure was at least five stories tall and the base of it seemed to have been largely dug out of the ground. At the entrance stood four Romulan guards Jack pointed to them and asked.
“What do you think Commander".
Crystal gave a somewhat feral smile, it seemed that they were going the right way and their was something very important down here. "I think they are in our way." The Romulans hadn't noticed their approach and were seemingly rather bored of gaurd duty in a cave this far from anywhere. "Let's go," Crystal said aiming her phaser. The guards never knew what hit them all four dropped from multiple heavy stuns.
Crystal walked slowly forward. "Everyone keep your eyes open," It wasn't necessary but it made Crystal feel better to say something. The doctor check the four Romulans over and confirmed that they were unconscious rather than dead, maybe now they would be able to get some answers.
Crystal collected some transporter tags from Toja and attached one to each Romulan. she tapped her comm badge. =/\=Commander Rose to Olympia, We have four unconscious Romulans down here. Please beam up the active transporter tags. Maybe they'll let us know what's going on when they come round. =/\=
=/\=The Imperial High Command sent me to oversee Commander Danath's actions. They believe he is a little irrational. If Commander Danath has your people then I will try to help you recover them, I do not hold out much hope for their survival though.=/\=
Steve was beginning to get a little irritated. =/\= We WILL get our people back, and they WILL be alive Commander. What I am unsure of is how exactly you plan to help us to recover them? Not wanting to sound like I don't trust you, but.....well, I just don't trust you. To have one, and then suddenly TWO ships appear in our vicinity, both of which are cloaked...that doesn't sit well with me at all. We will work on a few solutions and get back to you in due time, unless you come up with something first. Olympia out. =/\=
Before the Romulan commander could reply, Steve had the communications cut. He let out a deep breath. "Anyone got any ideas how to get our crew back, WITHOUT firing on either of the ships?"
Huebner understood the meaning the Captain had, especially for him. Huebner so far hadn't shown the softer side of himself, partly because of his professionalism and partly because he was still getting to know the crew. It seemed sad that he might not get to know some of them because of the injuries on the the planet's surface. Huebner felt the anger blossoming in his gut, but knew that what he wanted to do would not solve any of the problems at the moment, perhaps the time will come. Pushing the anger back down Huebner decided that when this was all over he would show the rest of the crew the gentler side of himself, but the current circumstances just wouldn't allow him to do so at the moment. The thought of losing crew-mates was troubling to Huebner and besides the anger he thought, "That could have been me...Then who would take care of my family?" Quickly he pushed the thought aside, "I don't have time for this right now, I must stay focused on my job and ensure that no one else gets hurt.
After dropping shields momentarily for a transport Huebner quickly brought them back on-line, just in case things went south. "Damn", he thought, "What are the Romulans guarding down there, that they needed those kind of defenses?"
Huebner punched up the command to track and fire upon the Romulan planet-side defenses. After scanning the surface he was pleased to see that his systems appeared to be in great working order and his aim was true, as always.
Even though he hadn't targeted one of the Romulan ships Huebner took great pleasure in exacting some small revenge on the Romulans for what they had done. Smiling to himself he mentally repeated on of his mantras, "The best defense is a great offense", he thought to himself.
"Captain, the planet-side defenses are down. I will continue scanning for any possible defenses that were overlooked.", said Huebner
Captain Smith Replied, "Very good Lieutenant, proceed. Any sign that the Romulan ships have reacted to our barrage of fire?"
Huebner checked his display and replied, "No Sir, no apparent reaction at this time."
=/\=USS Olympia this is Centurion Tanara aboard the IRW Erkana. I may be able to help you, I would like to defect. Please respond on this frequency.=/\=
Huebner started at the message coming across his panel. What in the nine hells was this? Oh this is just what we need now, a DEFECTOR. While he may be useful, Huebner couldn't help but think that this was some kind of trick. Huebner had always had an undying loyalty to the Federation and he couldn't understand how anyone could turn on their own... While historically those few who did could have a huge impact on events, it was just so out of character for Huebner that he couldn't fathom why someone would do that.
Captain, I have just picked up a message from one of the Romulan ships. It was directed to my console only. I think you should take a look at this.
Commander Rose smiled a smile jack hadn’t seen cross her face before she said.
"I think they are in our way."
The marines and Commander Rose raised their phasers Jack decided not to as he really didn’t like shooting people even if it was only on stun, The memory of shooting a Cardassian hologram on his training mission on starbase conqueror flashed into his mind.
"Let's go,"
Commander Rose said with a deal of confidence he hadn’t heard from her before Jack felt more determined to see this mission through too he had not wanted the poor marines death to be in vain either. The group fired at the rather bored looking guards and they fell. Jack moved slowly towards them, knelt down and began scanning them minor injuries on one of them no doubt by being shot multiple times, Jack stood up and told Commander Rose the group of stunned Romulans were okay and she ordered they be beamed up to the Olympia. The Marines set up transport enhancers and the Romulans shimmered away.
Jack stood up and moved towards the door of the building when he heard someone close by say.
“Grab the doctor”
Jack turned to look at Commander Rose and he felt arms grab at him the last thing he saw was Commander Rose’s shocked face before he and his kidnapper shimmered away in a Romulan transporter beam. Jack was scared as he shimmered into his new location he was in a big old room he knew he was somewhere inside the old building but where he did not know.
“Hello Doctor Jack Crane I need your help”
Said the Romulan who had captured him, he had moved to stand in front of Jack and in Jacks opinion he looked far too smug.
“Why would I help you I am your prisoner? And how do you know my name?”
Jack asked in a less than happy tone of voice he wouldn’t let it show but Jack was scared out of his mind. The Romulan let his smile slip from his face before he said.
“I know who you are because my ship tapped into you ships computer core and you will help me because if you don’t you and him will die”
The Romulan smiled as he finished his statement and moved aside to show Jack a man lying on the floor Jack recognised him from his medical file he was Peter Garret. Jack rushed past the romulan and knelt beside Peter. Jack felt for a pulse there was one but it was weak. Jack stood up and yelled angrily
“What the hell did you do to him? What are you here for?”
The Romulan raised his disruptor at Jack and said.
“I ask the questions here Doctor now treat him he has information we need”
Jack looked at Peter and sighed he had work to do....
Crystal had just finished talking to the Olympia when she heard someone call out
“Grab the doctor” She whirled round, for a second she locked eyes with Jack and then he and the Romulan who had grabbed him from behind. He looked as shocked as she felt and then they both vanished in a transporter haze that was not federation in origin.
Crystal felt as if she had been stunned, then her mind started working again. "Turn those transport enhancers off," She yelled. She gathered the rest of the away team and did a quick head count making sure no one else had been spirited away. They hadn't, Crystal breathed a silent sigh of relief, this away mission was going from bad to worse.
=/\=Commander Rose to Olympia, The Romulans just abducted Doctor Crane.=/\= It was a simple statement but Crystal could imagine the chaos it was causing up on the ship.
Steve approached Joel and instructed him to play the message.
=/\=USS Olympia this is Centurion Tanara aboard the IRW Erkana. I may be able to help you, I would like to defect. Please respond on this frequency.=/\=
Steve wasn't sure what to think. First of all you had a Romulan commander on one of the ships offering to help, and now there was a centurion on the other ship wishing to defect. If he was sure about one thing, that was that he wasn't going to be rushing into anything. By doing that he could be putting the Olympia and her crew, and even the dig team at risk.
He sighed and went to his command chair, contemplating their next move. Before he could even begin to think of a reply, the comms opened:
=/\=Commander Rose to Olympia, The Romulans just abducted Doctor Crane.=/\=
Now Steve was completely lost for words. After a few moments of silence he tapped his combadge to reply
=/\= What? Why would they take the doctor? We seem to have a very complex situation going on Commander. We have one of the ships wanting to help us, and a Centurion on the other wanting to defect. I'm not sure how genuine either is, but if something can be done to get the doctor AND the rest of the hostages back alive, then I am all ears. Have you managed to find anything else out down there that we could turn into an advantage? =/\=
With three things going on at once, something was going to have to be set in motion, and soon.
Steve walked over to David. "Any suggestions? It seems a bit too much of a coincidence that this all happens in such quick succession." With Crystal on the surface, David -in his capacity as Second Officer- was the most senior person on board, aside from Steve himself, so his suggestions were always welcome...and quite often, needed.
Jack stood up from the from kneeling next to Peter his injuries were seriuse but he would survive, Dr. Crane looked at the Romulan who was standing three metres away still pointing his disrupter at Jack.
“Why do you need me to save him? You must have doctors of your own?” The Romulan looked smug as he responded.
“We do but they are not trained in the treatment of lesser cultures”
Jack rolled his eyes before saying.
“I will need some medical equipment.”
The Romulan walked out of the room and left Jack alone with peter Garret Jack dropped his head in despair he was trapped in this room and he was sure that after he saved Peter he would get the treatment that put Mr. Garret in his current health crisis. Jack’s eyes opened wide as he saw that he still had his comm. Badge on he was shocked he didn’t even think about it he assumed the Romulan had taken it when he was grabbed Jack tapped his comm. Badge.
“Jack to Captain Smith and Commander Rose I don’t know how long I will be able to talk all I can tell you is that I am in the ancient structure, A Romulan has asked me to save Peter Garret they have tortured him for information, Captain I must tell you the Romulan knew who I was and he has my service record he has access to the Olympia’s computer you have a breach of security up there”
<Tag Captain Smith or anyone on the bridge/ Commander Rose>
Jack listned to the response from the Olympia and then halfway through Commander Rose’s response The Romulan returned and grabbed the comm. Badge.
“Thank you I didn’t know if you would take the bait doctor.”
Jack must have looked shocked and confused as he said.
“You wanted me to talk to my crew why.”
The Romulan smiled again as he said. “my ship is sending your crew messages and the other Romulan ship is sending messages I want your Captain confused My crew are defecting from the empire we have come here to claim what is here for ourselves I need your ship to deal with the ship that has been sent to get us by the Tal’Shiar, The Romulan Empire has grown weak me and my group are going to use what is here to build a stronger empire and the Romulan star empire Or the federation won’t be able to defend themselves from technology that is buried here.”
Tan was still checking that there was nothing on the ground, apart from personnel, that could be detrimental to the away-team, when the Comms burst to life ...
=^= Commander Rose to Olympia .. The Romulans have abducted Doctor Crane =^=
Tan spun to look at the Captain, who had all but leapt from his command seat.
=^= What ... Why would they take the doctor .. We seem to have a very complex situation going on Commander .. We have one of the ships wanting to help us and a Centurion on the other wanting to defect .. I'm not sure how genuine either is but if something can be done to get the doctor AND the rest of the hostages back alive then I am all ears .... Have you managed to find anything else out down there that we could turn into an advantage ? =^=
Smith walked over to Operations ...
"Any suggestions David ...... It seems a bit too much of a coincidence that this all happens in such quick succession."
Tan thought for a moment ..
"Between Tanara and Vorath .. I honestly can't see a way out .. I wouldn't allow one of the Romulans to beam over here on the pretext of 'Asylum' .. We will rapidly find ourselves in the middle of a Romulan civil war .. Get all the information we can from Tanara 'before' we allow him to come aboard .. Whoever has taken the Doctor is from one of those ships out there so we need to establish which ship and target that one."
"But antagonizing the Romulans isn't number one on my 'things to do list' David."
Tan nodded ..
"I think we need to remove the threat of anyone else getting lifted from the surface .. Take the Olympia to the Romulan ships .. If we position ourselves correctly they will move back .. Out of transporter range .. If they attempt to launch an attack on surface personnel .. We'll be able to prevent it ..... Hopefully."
Steven looked at the view-screen. He knew he couldn't afford for anyone else to vanish, and he was still no wiser as to 'who' had his people.
"OK ....." he said finally, "Start to move us 'slowly' toward the Romulan vessels .. They will want to know what we're up to but don't answer their hails .. We'll speak to them once were well and truly in their way !"
Smith sat back down, this situation was escalating rapidly into something he'd rather not be a part of .... But his crew were missing, and the only people who had anything to do with it were less that two hundred thousand kilometers away .... And VERY heavily armed ! ..........
=/\=Commander Rose to Olympia, The Romulans just abducted Doctor Crane.=/\=
Huebner thought, "What the ..., why would the planet side Romulans want to abduct the Doctor?" As he wrapped his mind around the possibilities it became clear to him that the Romulans wanted the Doctor to treat the scientists. He was sure of that because the Romulans would be able to treat their own, but have historically viewed the other race of the galaxy as lesser beings. As such they would have limited if any knowledge of treatment information or techniques for other races.
Huebner spoke up, "Captain, I believe that the Romulans have abducted the doctor to treat the prisoners. Based on the sensors I have not detected any transports to either of the ships, which means that the prisoners are on the surface somewhere."
His speech with Captain Smith was suddenly interrupted.
“Jack to Captain Smith and Commander Rose I don’t know how long I will be able to talk all I can tell you is that I am in the ancient structure, A Romulan has asked me to save Peter Garret they have tortured him for information, Captain I must tell you the Romulan knew who I was and he has my service record he has access to the Olympia’s computer you have a breach of security up there”
Relief flooded through Huebner's mind as he heard the message. At least Doctor Crane and Mr. Garret were in the same location, now if only he could locate them. Hopefully if he could the other prisoners would be close by...
Huebner rechecked the computer systems and was please to learn that the breach of computer security the Doctor referred to must have been the earlier incursion.
Huebner quickly resumed scanning the planet for any life signs, after completing a quick request of Commander Tan for more power, he programmed a search routine, but where to start? After a moment he replayed the Doctor's transmission and amazingly with the additional power he was able to trace the location of the Doctor's signal. The area was a site of ancient ruins, which matched the Doctor's brief description of the location. Initiating the life sign search he was pleased to find that he had punched through the planet's interference and had located life signs. Expanding his search he located the away team's position. Refocusing his scans on the ruins he has disturbed to discover that in addition to the prisoners a sizable force of Romulans was guarding them. Even more disturbing was the fact that many of the Romulans seemed to mingle with the prisoners, meaning that any attack from the ships weapons would risk killing the prisoners as well. The location of the Ruins was only about 10 kilometers from the Away Team's location and based on the scan results the Romulans had placed Transport Inhibitors around the complex. Well, that ruled out simply beaming the prisoners out... Nearly 100 Romulans against the away team, now that was not going to work, there had to be another way. Perhaps a detachment of Security Personnel would be able to assist the Marines in breaching the perimeter. Alerting Ensign Walsh, Huebner's second in command, he ordered the Ensign to prepare an assault team with phasers, phaser rifles and, checking his armory inventory, yes we have them aboard, concussion grenades. Walsh also happened to be a demolitions expert so Huebner ordered him to bring whatever explosives he deemed necessary to the mission.
Huebner opened a channel to Commander Rose and spoke to both her and the Captain as he made his report. "Captain, Commander, I have located the position of the Doctor and the other prisoners, however they are guarded by a force of 100 Romulans. They are located in some ancient ruins about 10 kilometers from the away team's current position and have transport inhibitors in place and on line. Since the prisoners are mixed with the Romulans, a shipboard weapon assault is out of the question. Unfortunately, they have also located the inhibitors around the prisoners, so we won't be able to directly beam in to that location. Commander, I am sending the coordinates to you now... Captain I believe that the marine force on the ground may need some assistance in breaching the defenses of the ruins. I am prepared to send a force of my Security personnel to assist them. I have already put them on alert and have authorized them access to the armory to retrieve phasers, phaser rifles, concussion grenades and explosives. My demolitions expert, Ensign Walsh, is assigned to the team. I can have them join the away team within 10 minutes with your permission. I would like to lead the team personally, but I believe that my presence here will be more useful."
Jack had begun his treatment of Peter Garret he may be a prisoner of the Romulans but he was still a doctor, and would do everything in his power to save Mr. Garret. Jack was worried about the internal damage that would require surgery, Jack felt himself getting increasingly angry with these Romulans he couldn’t understand how they could justify such treatment to their prisoners from Peter Garrets physical injuries to Danar Salas mental injuries. Jack was not a violent person but at that particular moment at time he would have given anything for a phaser if only just to wipe the smug smile of his Romulan guards face.
Jack stood up and turned to the Romulan who was standing over him watching Jack very closely. Jack had a look of disgust on his face as he said.
“Mr. Garret will live but he needs surgery and soon.”
The Romulan began laughing and he looked at Jack with such disgust as he said.
“Thank you doctor but he will not be getting surgery his interrogation will continue and yours will begin now.”
Jack took a step back but was powerless to stop the romulan pointing his disruptor at Jack and firing Jack crumpled to the floor and the next thing he knew he was tied to a chair in a very small room with only a light in the ceiling and the same romulan guard standing with the same look on his face.
“Tell me the tactical capabilities of your ship”
Jack let out a nervous chuckle before replying with contempt.
“I am a doctor I have no knowledge of my ships tactical abilities I have never even seen it in battle before you should know that you have my file or can’t you read.”
The Romulans smug face faded and was replaced with unadulterated rage as he backhanded Jack across the face, Jack could taste blood in his mouth and guessed the Romulan had split his lip, Jack spat at the Romulan and said.
“You will have to do better than that, but as I said before I have no knowledge of my ships capabilities, I can tell you the colour of the carpets in sickbay is cream I don’t care for that colour myself I was thinking of changing it to blue what do you think, do cream walls and blue carpets go together?”
The Romulan let out an angry grunt as he punched Jack in the stomach, Jack let out a moan of pain Jack was telling the truth when he said he had no knowledge of the tactical abilities of the ship and he could only hope the Romulan would give up or Captain smith and Commander Rose could rescue him before he sustained such injuries as Peter Garret.
She shrugged fully aware that the Captain couldn't see her =/\=Not yet,=/\= she replied simply =/\=Have the prisoners said anything yet? Possibly we could exchange one of the for Doctor Crane?=/\=
The CTSO added his piece to the communication =/\=Captain, Commander, I have located the position of the Doctor and the other prisoners, however they are guarded by a force of 100 Romulans. The fact that the Doctor was not on one of the Romulan ships certainly made things easier and right now Crystal was certainly in the mood to shoot something.
=/\=Lieutenant, I suggest you use the phaser rifle specs in file Rose three beta, it's a set of modifications I made a while back. The power cells burn out quicker than usual but the range, focus and power are all improved. Up to 139% standard power.=/\= She sighed realising that this would be audible of the comms =/\=Sounds like well need every advantage we can get. Please bring rifles down for myself and Lieutenant Erikson=/\= The marines were all ready armed
Crystal checked that she had received the rendezvous information and led the away team towards it.
"Keep us in contact with the Away-team." Tan said as the ship eased out of orbit.
Slowly the Olympia closed the distance between her and the two Romulan vessels.
"Sir .. You do know we're heavily out-gunned." Heubner said from Tactical.
"Yes Mister Huebner." Steven said, as Tan watched the screen.
"We're being hailed." the Helm Officer said.
"Ignore it !" Tan said, "Bring us to one hundred thousand meters and on a direct line between their ships and the planet."
"Aye Sir." she said, edging the Olympia closer to the Romulans.
"Sir ... They are hailing us again .. This time adding that if we do not halt our approach they will open fire on us."
"You were told to ignore the hail Ensign .. Please do so." Smith said, looking from the screen, to Tan, and back again.
"One hundred thousand meters." Helm informed them.
"All stop." Tan ordered.
"The Romulan vessel to port has raised shields and armed her weapons ... The starboard ship has followed suit .. Should I raise shields ?" Heubner said, a worried edge to his voice.
"No .. Not yet." Smith said, then looked at Tan, "David ? ......"
"Open a channel to the nearer of the two ships." Tan ordered.
"Channel open."
David took a deep, silent breath before speaking ...
"Romulan Vessel .. We require you to cease all firing on the surface and recall ALL ground personnel .. Immediately."
The silence was un-nerving, as the Olympia awaited a reply ..
"Weapons and shields Sir ?" Heubner asked again, but got only a shake of the head from the Captain.
They waited almost thirty seconds, then Tan repeated his statement ... This time he got a response, but not one that he, or indeed the Captain expected ....
The IRW Erkana began to move. Not away, but toward the Olympia. Danath wasn't in any hurry to close the gap, but he was, never the less, closing it ..
"Distance ?" Tan said.
"Seventy five thousand and closing."
David looked at Steven in the Command seat. The Erkana's Commander was either attempting to call Smith's bluff, although Romulans were hardly known for their poker expertise, or he was going to cause the Olympia to withdraw ..
"Fifty five thousand ..."
Tan, sat in Crystals seat, watched the approaching war-bird ..........
Jack Crane had been tied to the chair and interrogated by the Romulan for fifteen minutes now, his jaw and stomach ached beyond belief but still the Romulan learned nothing of the Olympia’s tactical capabilities the reason for that was because Jack didn’t know the Olympia’s specifications. The Romulan took a step a back and looked Jack in the eyes before saying.
“okay Mr. Crane perhaps another line of questioning might yield more cooperation, for your sake I hope it does I am running out of patience.”
Jack shot an angry look at the Romulan whom Jack had come to thoroughly despise before saying in a tone that showed all his anger and hatred.
“Doctor it Dr. Crane not Mr. Thank you very much.”
The Romulan sneered before hitting Jack across the face and yelling.
“I have had just about as much of your insolence as I can take.”
The Jack heard something unexpected phaser fire and the sound of footsteps as they ran, Jack looked up filled with hope and confidence before saying top the Romulan whos face was now filled with worry and fear.
“Sounds like you have some uninvited guests if I were you I would run those are no doubt the marines I was with and I am sure they are very angry one of your traps killed one of their friends so I doubt they are in the mood to take prisoners.”
The Romulan turned to face the door before saying to himself.
“I have to protect the artefact or the whole plan will come unravelled.”
He pressed something on his forearm and a transporter beam was activated and he was gone. Two minutes went by of what sounded like heavy fighting before the shooting stopped and the door to the room opened and jack let out a huge sigh of relief when he saw Commander Rose flanked by two marines enter with their phasers up.
“I have never been so happy to see you Commander what took you so long”
<Tag Commander Rose>
After one of the marines untied Jack he stood up and accepted the water one of them held out to him and drank until the water was gone that made Jack feel a lot better he turned to Commander Rose and said.
“We should keep going we have them on the run whatever is down here we can’t let them activate it Ma’am”
Huebner waited patiently for the anxiously awaited command to raise shields and open fire. His anticipation practically oozed out of his pores as an unexpected rivulet of sweat ran down into his eyes. Suddenly his console chirped, looking down he read the message that Ensign Walsh had sent. Huebner started to pump his fist in the air, started to whoop, but then remembering where he was, decided better of the idea. Quickly putting his hand down and looking to see if anyone else saw him, he was pleased to see that everyone else was so focused on the events that no one seemed to notice.
"Captain, good news, the away team has liberated the prisoners including the doctor. They didn't have time to explain much as they are attempting to track down some kind of artifact on the surface that the Romulans seem VERY concerned with."
Suddenly another chirp
"Captain the range to the Erkana is now 35,000 km and closing. The other Romulan vessel is holding position, both vessels still have shields raised and weapons charged."
Huebner really wanted to ask the Captain if he could raise shields, but over the course of the mission had developed a deep respect for the Captain, so he wisely held his tongue.
Suddenly another alarm chirped, Huebner glanced down at it. "Captain the Erkana has a phaser lock on us!" Then the alarm went away. Rechecking his console Huebner realized what was happening, "Captain the Erkana has targeted the other Romulan vessel...and we are right in their field of fire!"
This mission kept getting messier by the minute, what was going on here? Why would a Romulan ship want to shoot at another Romulan ship, unless....Wait the defector. This was also getting complex and confusing. Checking the intelligence database Huebner realized that the Erkana was known to be a vessel used by the Tal'Shiar, the Romulan intelligence agency, which could only mean that this could get even more ugly and really fast too. But which ship had crew on the surface, the defector or the Tal'Shiar? Either could be very bad. Huebner suddenly realized that he was sweating heavily, "I'm going to need a long sonic shower when this is all done, not to mention an ice cold brew." he thought to himself.
