OOC: as Jack Crane
Jack’s eyes slowly opened and it took him a moment to focus his vision on the person leaning over him. “What happened?” Jack asked softly.
Janet Reilly stood forward and the EMH stepped back. “You collapsed on the bridge according to rumours you were in the middle of yelling at Commander Tan.”
Jack closed his eyes as he remembered his actions on the bridge. Standing up Jack walked over to the medical console to look at his vital signs. The EMH had an annoyed look on his face as he said. “Not even as much as a thank you how rude.” Jack flashed the EMH an angry look as he said. “Computer deactivate the EMH.” The holographic doctor vanished and Jack looked back to the console. He was pleased with what he saw heartbeat and pulse looked fine and he could tell by the lack of pain his arm had been healed properly this time.
Jack looked around sickbay two of the beds were filled one with captain Smith sleeping peacefully and the other with Danar Sala. She was still suffering from the effects of an overdose of Exypolomine Jack sighed as he turned to Janet his ‘Loyal’ assistant chief medical officer. “Have you come up with a way to help her Janet?”
Janet lifted her looked back to Jack as she said. “You won’t like it but the only way I see her ever living a normal life again is a Vulcan Mind Meld.”
Jack lowered his head he had no love for Vulcan mind melds having been through on himself a few years ago, he raised his head again as he said. “Find me a Vulcan volunteer and we will do it.”
Five minutes later Janet returned with a Vulcan ensign who moved over to Sala and began to initiate the mind meld, once initiated he would use his telepathic prowess to change the chemical balance in her mind.
After two minutes the Vulcan removed his hands from Sala and looked to Jack and said. “Sir the problem on the planet is worse than we first believed.” Jack stopped himself from breaking into a laugh ‘How could things be worse’ he thought.
“How is it worse Ensign?” Jack asked with a voice that reflected his exhaustion. “The artefact down there can destroy the Star of any solar system and according to what miss Sala overheard the Romulan dissidents first target will be the Klingon homeworld, and the bad part is they are only one hour at best at being able to transport the artefact of the planet’s surface.”
Jack looked shocked as he said to himself. “We can’t let the dissidents or the Tal’shiar to get their hands on such a device.”
Jack ran out of sickbay and into the closest turbolift. “Deck one.” Jack yelled.
As the turbolift opened Jack ran onto the bridge he received an angry glare from Commander Tan but Jack had no time to deal with his earlier actions.
“Commander Rose during a mind meld with Danar Sala a Vulcan ensign discovered the purpose of the artefact down there, It can destroy the star of a solar system Tomork and his co-conspirators were going to use it against the Klingons, We can’t let the Tal’shiar get their hands on it either I recommend bombarding the structure with all the weapons we can use, A device of that power cannot be allowed to be studied or used by the Romulan empire the balance of power in the Quadrant would shift completely to the side of the Tal’shiar.”

The Bridge was quiet although the alert lights were still flickering. She had had Commander Huebner bring his ideas for anti-cloak weapons to fruition and he and V'Sel were currently engaged in very detailed scans of the Romulan vessels, part of the scan was to determine which vessel the rest of the archaeology team was aboard. Crystal was determined to keep tabs on them. She wasn't planning on starting anything as it seemed they were busy with each other but if either of those vessels started to threatened the Olympia then she planned to finish whatever happened.
She had settled into the centre chair and was doing her best not to harrass 'her' bridge crew too much. They had to be as nervous as she was but it was part of a Commander's job not to show those nerves. She was also very worried about Captain Smith and Dr Crane but paging sickbay every few minutes wouldn't help. She swallowed quietly and looked around the bridge. Everything was as it should be, for the moment at least but no doubt someone would come up with a pronouncement that would change all that shortly.
Doctor Crane arrived on the bridge just then, while Crystal was very grateful to see if on his feet again the look on his fac drained all joy out of the event.“Commander Rose during a mind meld with Danar Sala a Vulcan ensign discovered the purpose of the artefact down there, It can destroy the star of a solar system Tomork and his co-conspirators were going to use it against the Klingons, We can’t let the Tal’shiar get their hands on it either I recommend bombarding the structure with all the weapons we can use, A device of that power cannot be allowed to be studied or used by the Romulan empire the balance of power in the Quadrant would shift completely to the side of the Tal’shiar.”
Crystal managed not to swear although inwardly her stomach sank and she was thinking a lot of words that her predecessor had favoured. She looked over her shoulder at the CTSO and aCScO.
"I want you to work out a way to get a transporter lock on the artefact." She knew they probably didn't have time to work out how to contain it it but then again: although it was against her scientist instincts she would be happy to order it scattered across the system on a wide beam dispersal rather than fall into the hands of someone who intended to use it.

Aboard the IRW Erkana
Centurion Tanara was reluctantly following her most recent set of orders. The two Romulan ships and the Federation ship had been hanging in space in silence for what seemed like forever. Weapons were charged and shields were up, she did not think this would end well.
Commander Dananth had arrived back on the bridge a very short time ago. He was grinning, presumably the result of some private plan that Tanara did not want know the details of. He had then ordered primary weapons locked on the federation ship. Tanara winced as she followed this order. She was tempted to take a stand against him but she knew she would live through that but if they tried to fight both the other vessels then they wouldn't live anyway.
She confirmed the weapons lock and then waited.
"fire," Commander Danath said. His voice flat as if he didn't care about the consequences of his actions.

Commander Rose looked at him with a certain degree of scepticism as she asked.
"You are feeling better aren't you?"
Jack smiled at her for a second it was a fake smile but he hoped it would pass.
“I feel just peachy Commander.”
Jack looked back towards the view screen where two Romulan warbirds were staring each other down the occasional phaser fire scorched across their shields.
Jack took a deep breath as he watched the battle at least they didn’t seem too interested in the Olympia. Just as Jack was about to excuse himself from the bridge he saw something out of the corner of his eye that made him turn back to the screen.
One of the warbirds had turned to face the Olympia it was massive as he approached the Olympia Jack got a better idea of how big it was it completely dwarfed the Olympia in size.
Jack turned towards the bridge as someone said.
“They have locked weapons on us brace for impact.”
Jack turned to see a green torpedo race towards the Olympia as it hit a green flash filled the screen. Jack stumbled backwards as the ship rocked. A few sparks flew out of consoles. The helmsman was laying on the floor with a gash to the head Jack rushed to the closest console and beamed him to sickbay as Jack looked around the bridge he saw no one to take the helm. Dr. Jack Crane took the seat and began evasive manuvers he was by no means a skilled pilot but it was better than sitting still until one arrived.
“Initiating evasive manuvers.” Jack thought for a second before he realized he didn’t remember the name for them and jokingly said, “Crane one.”
The Olympia flew away from the Warbird as Jack waited for Commander Rose’s order or a skilled pilot to relieve him. He smiled as he moved the ship out of the path of an incoming torpedo.
“And the pilots say this is hard.” He said to himself.

"Commander Tan." Crystal said, studying the view-screen intently, "We really need to get the hostages back, could you take over the scans."
David nodded, and moved over to the Science station ..
"I can see them but there's no way to get a positive lock at the moment." he said after a moment, but watched for a break in the firing to see if it would be possible to get through the Romulan shields .. but that option suddenly became moot, as the nearer of the two Romulan ship's began to turn toward them.
"They have locked weapons on us ... Brace for impact !" Heubner suddenly shouted.
The ship rocked, throwing everyone from their feet. Crane beamed an injured Officer from the Bridge, then jumped into the Navigation seat. David could see that Commander Rose was coming round, she had taken a nasty knock on the temple.
He checked his console as the Olympia began to move away ..
"Shields are at thirty seven percent." David said, "We'll suffer if they manage another hit like that one."
Tan could see that the Doctor, while doing all he could, was failing to get the ship clear fast enough. He moved forward, and tapped Jack on the shoulder ..
"Doctor ... I'll take over now. Take a look at Commander Rose please. I think she needs help."
Jack nodded, more in relief than anything else as he almost leapt from the seat, making way for Tan.
David threw the ship into a Zee minus spiral, dropping almost ten thousand kilometers below the plane, then quickly rotated the ship so it was heading almost vertically .. Seeing the Romulan ship getting closer by the second, he waited, longer than he should have, then fired a volley of photon torpedo's into the underside of their attacker.
Banking the Olympia as fast as safeties would allow, he set a course away from the second Romulan ship.
Less than a second later, four of the six torpedo's blasted through the underside of the Romulan War-bird .. Ripping one wing away and destroying all propulsion. That ship was dead in space, but they still had the second ship to worry about ...
And it was closing ..........

Doctor Jack Crane was relieved beyond belief when Commander Tan relieved him from helm. Jack rushed over to Commander Rose who had received a nasty gash to her head.
Jack grabbed the closest emergency medical case and grabbed a tricorder scanning her he saw she was suffering from a mid concussion, jack grabbed a hypospray with pain reliever and injected Commander Rose as she was coming around. Jack held her head steady as he used the dermal regenerator to heal the cut.
“Are you alright Commander?”
<Tag Rose>
Jack helped her stand up and grab the command chair, Commander Tans piloting was better than jacks by far as the Olympia had dodged the last few volleys of weapons fire.
Jack tapped his comm. Badge and said.
“Crane to sickbay whats the situation down there?”
Mike Hall’s voice came in reply.
“A few minor burns and bruises nothing serious we have it under control sickbay out.”
Jack looked back to the view screen as one of the warbirds wings exploded care of the Olympias torpedoes fire.
The second Warbird started to head for the Olympia with increasing speed Jack turned to Rose who looked much better now and said with some alarm.
“They still have the remaining archaeological team on board that ship we have to at least try to rescue them.”

"They have locked weapons on us ... Brace for impact !" Heubner suddenly shouted.
Crystal braced as the CTSO shouted. The Olympia was struck by torpedoes from the warbird. Fortunately only one of them was actively firing on the Olympia. Some struck her temple and the bridge around her dimmed. Crystal blinked heavily suddenly realising that she was now on the deck and had actually been unconscious for a short while. Dr Crane was standing next to her her hyprospray in hand. She called for a status update as her ran a dermal regenerator across her head.
“Are you alright Commander?” Crystal paused for a second and then answered honestly. "I think so, nothing hurts." With that she turned away from the doctor and glanced round the bridge and noticed that David was manning conn.
She knew their shields had taken a beating but one of the romulan ships was dead in space. The other was approaching...
“They still have the remaining archaeological team on board that ship we have to at least try to rescue them.” Doctor Crane gestured to the burning warship on the veiwscreen.
Crystal nodded. "Move us to put that ship between us and the approaching vessel." David started to do as she ordered.
"Commander Huebner, Their shields are down?" She asked without taking her eyes off the screen. He gave an affirmative response. "Transport every none Romulan life sign off that ship. Send a security detail to meet them."

"Doctor, I imagine they may well need some medical attention as well."
Tag: Jack
Crystal returned her focus fully to the approaching ship. She was about order an offensive action when she heard the chirping of an incoming hail. "The Romulan vessel is hailing us" Commander Hubner announced.
She settled back into the Command chair. "On screen," Crystal said, she was hoping that there was a way to get out of this without killing everyone and destroying the artefact.
The bridge of the Romulan ship This is Commander Voreth of the IRW T'Vana, I want to speak to Captain Smith. I believe I have a solution to our problem.
"This is Commander Crystal Rose, Captain Smith is unavailable at the moment. I am his first officer, you can say whatever needs to be said to me." Her words were crisp and her tone more than a little cold.
There was silence on the the end of the comm. then the Romulan Commander cocked his head to one side. In Crystal's view he either knew nothing about the attack on Captain Smith or he was a very good actor.
"Very well then I wish to meet with you privately to discuss this situation." That hadn't been what Crystal had been expecting she signalled for the sound to be cut.
"Opinions?" she said, addressing the bridge at large.

David threw the ship into a series of evasive maneuvers, before settling on a heading .. Behind them, the Romulan vessel began to gain ground yet again.
Tan turned to speak to Crystal ..
"We're going to have to fight I think Commander."
The Executive Officer, currently in Command, knew that her Chief Operations Officer was right. He had more than enough experience to be able to call this one. She was just about to give orders, when Heubner spoke.
"We're being hailed Commander."
"On screen." Crystal said, mirroring the neutral look on Tan's face.
=^= This is Commander Voreth of the IRW T'Vana .. I want to speak to Captain Smith .. I believe I have a solution to our problem =^=
=^= This is Commander Crystal Rose .. Captain Smith is unavailable at the moment .. I am his first officer so say whatever needs to be said to me =^=
Tan watched the Romulan, wondering if he actually 'knew' of the attack on the Captain.
=^= Very well then .. I wish to meet with you privately to discuss this situation =^=
"Options ?" Crystal said, watching Voreth as he spoke quietly to one of his own Bridge Officers, obviously giving Rose time to consult her own Officers.
"If he's serious about talking, I'm sure he wouldn't object to dropping out of warp and powering down his disruptor's." David said, now stood with Crystal, "We should also insist on his beaming over to us, and not the other way round !"
"The hostages ?" someone else said.
"Well I can't see him bringing those with him." Crystal said, still trying to gage the Romulan's mood.
"So we offer to talk ...... On our conditions." David said, "besides, they will have caught us in less than five more minutes anyway, so what is there to loose." he finished, shrugging.
Crystal nodded, then turned to the screen.
=^= Commander Voreth .. We're willing to talk .. But there are conditions ...... =^=
Commander Rose continued to lay out the ground rules for the meeting, and seconds later the T'Vana dropped far behind as they came to a complete stop ... The Olympia continued on course for a few seconds before Crystal gave her orders ..
"Come about .. One hundred and eighty degrees .. Drop from warp and put us nose to nose with the T'Vana David."
Tan sat back at Helm and began the course change. Dropping out of warp and heading directly for the Romulan vessel ... Leaving it to the very last second before bringing the ship to full stop, with less than fifty meters to spare, and grinning inwardly as he noticed thrusters begin to push the Romulan ship backward, fearing a collision ...
=^= Transporter room .. Set co-ordinates .. Beam Commander Voreth directly to the Bridge as soon as he is ready .. Make sure he is unarmed =^=
=^= Aye Ma'am ...... They're ready now .. Transporting =^=
Crystal, and the rest of the Bridge crew wondered briefly if they were doing the right thing. But it became a moot thought, as a shimmer began in front of the view-screen ..........

Jack watched as the Romulan shimmered into existence in front of the view screen. The junior security officer who was stood beside him raised his phaser but Jack place his hand on the young man’s arm and pushed it down as he shook his head slightly.
The Romulan Commander took a step forward he was short but at the same time he gave the impression of power. His eyes were sharp when he looked at jack for a moment he got the strangest sense he could see right through him.
Jack shrugged off the feeling dismissing it as sleep deprivation, The Romulan Commander stepped towards Commander Rose and said in a voice that made Jack cringe.
“Commander Rose I am here to negotiate a peaceful resolution to our mutual problem.”
Jack didn’t trust him an inch but stayed quite as he watched Commander Rose.
The Romulan looked around before continuing to say.
“Our sensors indicate that you have Sub-Commander Tomork on board we request him back he is a traitor and is wanted by the Tal’shiar.”
Jack stepped forward and said in a voice that did not portray his anger.
“He is being held under charges of murder of a federation citizen and the abduction and interrogation of a Starfleet officer.”
Jack didn’t let on that he was the officer in question but he sure as hell was not going to allow Tomork to get away unpunished Jack held him responsible for the death of Mr. Garret.
He looked at Commander Rose with a fake smile that looked more like a smirk and said.
“Perhaps we should discuss this in private.”

It seemed that Commander Voreth was serious about talking as he agreed to the conditions Crystal laid down. Crystal hadn't heard about the hostages yet but her guess was that they weren't on Voreth's ship. She was hoping they managed to loacte some non-Romulan lifesigns on the other ship. Now though, her concern was the Romulan Commander. She snapped out orders.
"Come about .. One hundred and eighty degrees .. Drop from warp and put us nose to nose with the T'Vana David."
=^= Transporter room .. Set co-ordinates .. Beam Commander Voreth directly to the Bridge as soon as he is ready .. Make sure he is unarmed =^=
=^= Aye Ma'am ...... They're ready now .. Transporting =^=
A shimmer formed in front of the view-screen. The Romulan Commander took a step forward, he was on the short side but still about half a head taller than Crystal
“Commander Rose I am here to negotiate a peaceful resolution to our mutual problem.”
Crystal clasper her hands behind her back and stood squarely in front of the Commander. She knew that there were armed security officers in the back half of the bridge and was careful not to block their line-of-sight. She looked calmly at the Romulan, waiting; he would not intimidate her (especially not on her own bridge).
Crystal raised a hand and the doctor lapsed into silence, maybe he had finished making his point, maybe he had realised that it wasn't his place to speak or maybe he had caught her silent order. Crystal didn't know. She understood the Doctor's opinion on the matter but he had just made things harder for her.
“Perhaps we should discuss this in private.”
Crystal stayed silent a moment longer then spoke in a tone that could have frozen water "We could if that would make you feel more comfortable. As for the Subcommander, my Doctor was quite correct when he state our reasons for holding him."
Crystal paused for a moment. This was a dangerous game, she did not what the Commander to be angry with her but she did want to be taken seriously.
"There are a number of Federation civilians being held by Romulan forces. I want my people back and to ensure that the artefact down there does not fall into the hands of anyone who will use it to start a war."
Crystal didn't think she could have stated her position any clearer.
Voreth looked at the young first officer. He had thought that she wopuld be easier to deal with than Captain Smith, who in Voreth's opinion had anger issues. Now though he wasn't so sure. The Doctor was also an unknown quantit, he did not think either of them would actually attack him, Starfleet were mostly too weak stomached for that. What he wanted from this was quite simple. He wanted to win, who he had to beat to achieve that he was no longer sure. Certainly it would serve his purposes to ensure that Subcommander Tomork fall into Tal Shiar hands, Commander Danath fall into Federation hands and the artefact fell into no ones hands.
Voreth made his decision. "Then I believe we can work together Commander. I will trade you the Subcommander for those Commander Danath is holding hostage. I will contact you shortly."
He tapped his subdermal tranceiver sending a signal to his ship and then disappeared from the Olympia's bridge in a transporter haze as he was taken back to his ship.
Crystal took several steps backwards and dropped into the Captains chair. "Well, that was fun." She said "So what do you think of his offer?" She directed her words to the bridge crew.

Jack stepped forward and said in a voice that did not portray his anger.
"He is being held under charges of murder of a federation citizen and the abduction and interrogation of a Star fleet Officer." Crystal beat David by less than a nano-second as she silenced the Doctor, Tan knew full well that he was referring to himself with the comment, "Perhaps we should discuss this in private !" Crane finished, looking directly at the Executive Officer.
The Conversation was less than sedate, and Tan knew that it could become worse at any moment. But Vorath seemed to be pleased at what he had seen.
"Then I believe we can work together Commander. I will trade you the Sub-commander for those Commander Danath is holding hostage. I will contact you shortly."
With that, he De-materialized ..
"Well, that was fun." Crystal said, sitting with a loud sigh, "So .. What do you think of his offer ?"
"Well." David began, "Firstly, I think the Doctor needs to know when to speak. He should have taken no part in that exchange."
Crystal listened to Tans comments, then spoke.
"OK .. Doctor, you should have let Myself or Commander Tan take the lead in the conversation. I too understand your situation, but getting our people back is the highest priority."
"Courting resentment could have caused us more problems than we could cope with." David said, touching the Doctors arm for reassurance, I think if we're going to get out of this, we need to do it quickly. Get our people back then send him Tomork ... We can warp out of here while they're figuring out how to torture him !"
"You wouldn't recommend negotiation then ?" Crystal said to Tan.
"No ... Have him beam our people over ... Send the Romulan back ... Then get the HELL out of here !!" Tan said emphatically.
Commander Rose held eye contact with the Second Officer for a long moment before speaking ..
"Anyone beat that idea ?" ..........

Dr. Jack Crane had watched the exchange between Commander Rose and the Romulan Commander silently after his small outburst. After the Romulan had beamed back to his vessel Commander Tan was the first to give his opinion.
"Courting resentment could have caused us more problems than we could cope with." David said, touching the Doctors arm for reassurance, I think if we're going to get out of this, we need to do it quickly. Get our people back then send him Tomork ... "No ... Have him beam our people over ... Send the Romulan back ... Then get the HELL out of here !!" Tan said emphatically.
Commander Rose held eye contact with the Second Officer for a long moment before speaking ..
"Anyone beat that idea ?" ..........
Jack was horrified by Commander Tans blatant disregard for the life of Sub-Commander Tomork.
Jack looked at both of the officers as he said with an impassioned voice.
"I can't believe you would be willing to send a man to his most certain death, I for one strongly disagree with that course of action."
Jack took a deep breath realizing his medical ethics were getting the best of him something to which neither Commander Tan or Commander Rose could relate.
"You know what send him to his death, do whatever the hell you like I just don't care."
Jack pulled off his comm. badge and took a quick second to look at it before he threw it to the ground.
"I Resign I am not cut out this."
With that Jack left the bridge and headed back to his quarters. Entering his room Jack turned on his computer console and looked at the picture of his wife.

Janet Reilly was standing in sickbay when the news of Commander Crane’s outburst on the bridge had made its way around the ship. A small smile began to form as she thought of his resignation. She had always known he wasn’t right for the job and now they had no choice but to promote her to his position. She had to stop herself from breaking out in laughter.
She put down the PADD she was working on and made her way out of sickbay, entering the corridor she asked the computer the current location of Lieutenant Commander Crane. The computer responded with.
=/\= Commander Crane is in his quarters section five deck two =/\=
Janet smiled again as she made her way to the closest turbolift. As the turbolift sped to deck two Dr. Reilly couldn’t help but smile a smile that stretched from ear to ear. The turbolift came to a stop and Janet stepped into deck two. As she made her way to section five her heart began to beat faster, her mind was racing with things to say to Crane.
She stood in front of his door and pressed the comm. Panel.
Jack had sat for the last five minutes in the darkness of his quarters looking at the picture of the woman he loved, the woman he killed. The beep from his door surprised him he hadn’t expected anyone from the bridge to be finished with the Romulans never mind have the time to lecture him on Starfleet protocol. He yelled “Enter.”
The light that came through the door hurt his eyes as he turned to see who was standing there. Jack was less than happy to see the smug smile of Janet Reilly greeting him. Janet took a step in his quarters and said. “Computer lights.”
The lights in Jacks quarters came to life and Jack was forced to squint as his eyes re-adjusted to the light. “What do you want Janet?” Jack said not hiding his contempt for the woman.
Janet smiled a cold and calculating smile as she said. “I knew you wouldn’t last Crane.”
Jack smiled back at her but it wasn’t a smile of kindness it was a smile that fully portrayed his foul mood.
“Well good for you Janet but why are you here I would have expected you to be moving your stuff in to my office by now.”
Janet smiled again as she moved closer to Jack her eyes caught the picture of Jacks deceased wife on the computer screen. “It’s because of what happened four years ago, you are mentally unstable I know it and you know it.”
Jack angrily slammed his fist into the computer pad the picture of his wife was replaced by the federation logo he turned back to Janet and said. “Your skills in medicine are wasted Janet you should have been a counsellor.”
Janet scoffed at Jacks comment and took a seat on the couch. “I made it no secret that I wanted the CMO position and yes your resignation would make it mine but I didn’t want it like this.”
Jack let out a laugh here she was she had gotten what she wanted and yet she still wanted more. “Well what do you want Janet?”
Janet sat back in her seat before saying. “I want people to see I am a better doctor than you, I want people to see it was me who should have been made CMO not you, I want them to take the position from you, not you throw it away.”
Jack was no longer smiling now he made no attempt at portraying anything but his true feelings. “Your not a better doctor than me Janet we both know that.”
Janet stood as she threw a comm. Badge at Jack. “Prove it or are you a coward, scared that I am right.”
With that Janet left without saying anything else. Jack was left in his quarters holding the comm. Badge he had caught Jack placed it on his uniform and stood up turning back to the computer he switched the picture of his wife back on.
“I know what you would say, It’s time to move on, perhaps your right.”
With that Jack turned his back on the computer and left his quarters. He walked slowly to sickbay nodding at the people as they walked past him. As he entered sickbay he saw Janet hovering over Captain Smith as she took scans. He walked up to her and said with true gratitude. “Thank you.”
Janet turned around as she said. “I didn’t do it for you I did it for me I want to win fair and square.”
Jack smiled and this time it was with amusement. “We shall see.”
With that Jack walked into his office and sat in his chair he put his feet up on the desk and leaned back it wasn’t long before the sleep he so dearly needed consumed him.

"I can't believe you would be willing to send a man to his most certain death, I for one strongly disagree with that course of action." Hearing it spelled out like that made a chill run down Crystal's spine. She did not like the idea but she had to prioritise the lives of federation civilians over the life of one who had attacked them and was apparently a criminal of some sort to his own people. There was logic top the decision but that didn't make it easier. Then again, no one had ever said command was easy.
Doctor Crane paused for a moment. "You know what send him to his death, do whatever the hell you like I just don't care."
Jack pulled off his comm. badge and took a quick second to look at it before he threw it to the ground.
"I Resign I am not cut out for this."
Doctor Crane stormed of the bridge leaving silence in his wake. Crystal could empathise, she'd felt like that herself some days. She slumped further into the command chair feeling dwarfed both by it and the decisions she was having to make. She hoped Doctor Crane would change his mind when he had calmed down and slept for a bit.
Crystal looked at David "I suppose that could have gone better." her voice was flat and resigned. He own tiredness was catching up with her. "I don't know when you last slept, but as we seem to be playing a waiting-game at the moment I'd advise you to get some rest. The same goes for you Commander Hubner." The tone of her voice made it clear this was a bit more than advice but a bit less than an order.

Crystal cast a critical eye over the bridge crew working out which members of the crew had been on duty the shortest time. "I will be in the Captain's ready room if there are any developments. In any case wake me in two hours."
Crystal wondered why she had chosen to nap in the ready room, it wasn't the most comfortable of places despite the sofa and she had never really spent much time in here anyway. Still she wanted to be ready and this was the best place for that.
Two Hours later Lieutenant Harrison woke her. Crystal downed a large mug of coffee and returned to the bridge it seemed the waiting was still going on. David and Joel were back on the bridge.
Crystal looked at Commander Huebner thoughtfully. "Have there been any developments locating our people?"
(Joel)
"Is it possible that Subcommander Tomork would be willing to give us further information rather than be handed back to his own people."
(Joel)
Crystal settled back in the command chair. "Computer what is the location and status of Doctor Jack Crane?"
"Doctor Crane is in his office and he is asleep." Crystal smiled to hear this. Her hope had survived.
There was silence for a moment. Then Crystal looked at David and Joel again. "I know we haven't yet worked out a way to beam our people off the Erkana, but do we have enough information to send a team over there and take them back?"

Steve slowly woke up and opened his eyes to find that he was once again in Sickbay. 'I've spent more time in here than what I have on the Bridge, it seems' he thought to himself and smiled. He was aching all over, and more so in his chest. He very gingerly started to move, in case his efforts were rewarded with pain.
He managed to get into a sitting position, and just sat there for a while, attempting to get his bearings, and clear his head. The ship was still in one piece, figuratively speaking....so that was a good thing. 'I still have a ship to command...so far so good.'
He looked around for any medical personnel, and waved one of them over.
"Forgive me, but my mind is still a little bit fuzzy....what's going on, and why am I in Sickbay for the second time?" He asked, hoping to get to the bridge sometime soon to find out first-hand how things are going.

Jack slowly awoke from his sleep his back was sore no doubt from because of the chair he was in. He leaned in close to the computer screen which was turned off and checked his reflection. He was relieved to see no blood. It took him several seconds to remember all of what had happened. Standing up Jack looked down at his uniform the singes and tears in it looked terrible. Grabbing the spare uniform off the couch he quickly changed. He placed the light blue coat over his uniform and attached the comm. Badge Janet had given him to it.
Jack left his office and looked around sickbay he was a little surprised to see Captain Smith sat up. Walking up behind the captain he heard his question to one of the nurses about why he was in sickbay again.
“You fainted on the bridge sir due to blood loss.”
Jack looked at the nurse who’s name escaped Jack for the moment and said.
“You’re dismissed.”
Walking around to where the nurse had stood Jack smiled as he scanned the Captain. Nodding in approval of what the scans showed Jack said.
“Currently Commander Rose is negotiating the release of the archaeologists, One of the Romulan ships has been disabled, and the remaining ship wants to trade our people for Tomork the Romulan we captured on the planet’s surface. As for what else has happened in the last three hours I don’t know.” Jack took a breath as he looked back down at the tricorder, looking back up he said.
“You are fit to return to the bridge, but do not over do it, I will relieve you of duty if you force me too.”
<Tag Captain Smith>
Jack reached down and grabbed the hypospray containing a mild pain reliever. Jack injected Captain Smith as he said.
“This should make you feel better, now let’s get you to the bridge.”
Walking to the closest turbolift Jack and Captain Smith waited for the turbolift to come to a stop. When it finally did Jack waited for the captain to exit first. An eager ensign had spotted the pair and jumped to attention and yelled.
“Captain on the bridge.”
Causing everyone to turn and look at the open turbolift doors. Jack smiled as he said quietly to the captain. “So much for a quite entry.”

"...... We haven't worked out a way to beam our people off the Erkana yet, but do we have enough information to send a team over there and 'take' them back ?" Crystal said, looking from David to Joel then back.
"Well ......" David began, moving to the science station and pulling up what he needed, "We do have all the schematics for Vorath's ship ... We can pretty much surmise the location they will be being held, so in my vie ......"
"Captain on the Bridge !" an Ensign interrupted.
David, Joel, and Crystal, all turned at the announcement, to see the Captain and ships' Doctor exiting the turbo-lift.
"Captain." Commander Rose said, stepping back slightly, so Steven could see the image currently showing.
"My ready room Crystal. I think I need to be brought up to speed." the Captain said, looking at the Romulan vessel seemingly ready to come through the massive view-screen, "David .. You have the Bridge."
"Sir." Tan replied, watching his two senior Officers leave the Bridge.
"Do you think they will just stand by and let us beam a team onto their ship, and leave unhindered ?" Joel asked, skeptically, once the Captain and Exec' had gone.
"We're looking at options thats all." David said, looking at the Erkana, "But I'm not one hundred percent sure I'd trust Vorath to keep his side of the bargain ... After all ... He's a Romulan !" ..........

Huebner replied, "I agree Commander. I have a proposal for you. You see while I have been attending my duties I have also been preparing for this initiative, but I'll need your help. As Operations Officer only you, the FO or CO has authority to transfer power to different systems. Now I'm not foolish enough to believe that the Romulans will hold up their end of the bargain. I've lost several comrades to their treachery in the past. If you can divert enough extra power, from say the sensors or some other source I can use the deflector dish to generate a large tachyon burst which should disable all systems on the Erkana for a short period of time, say about ten minutes. During that time my Security forces and the Marines will spearhead an assault on the Erkana with multiple objectives.
First we need to locate and remove the hostages from the ship. With them scans I have completed I know the exact location of all the hostages. I had planned to use the Marines to spearhead this objective as they are the best equipped to deal with heavy resistance. Secondly I will utilize my security teams to systematically neutralize the Erkana's propulsion, shields and weaponry systems. This action will basically make them a "toothless dragon", sir. This will buy us the time to evacuate the hostages and remove the Olympia from the situation with as little conflict as possible. While our assault would not destroy the Erkana it would leave them in a bad position. On a personal note I really don't care what happens to the Romulans, they have brought it upon themselves, but professionally speaking I realize that perhaps this action could have lasting negative implications on our relations. To help prevent this we could have Engineering transport enough spare parts so that they would have a decent shot at repairing the vessel quickly. With the Olympia's speed we should not have a problem evading their pursuit with enough of a lead. Of course the CO and FO would be in the loop too. What do you think of my plan, Sir?

Captain Smith and Commander Rose walked into the captains ready room and Jack watched the captain closely as he left the bridge, Jack nodded to himself as he thought the captain looked fine. Jack turned and entered the turbolift again. The doors closed and Jack was about to return to sickbay when he had an idea. “Brig.” The turbolift sped towards the deck where the brig was located.
Jack walked down the corridor not exactly sure where the brig was, after flagging down a crewman Jack asked for directions. Finaly Jack found the brig and walked up to the only occupied cell.
Tomork looked up and saw Jack his face changed to that smug smile Jack had found so distasteful.
“Here to gloat Doctor.” Tomork asked in a voice that seemed to really get on jack’s nerves.
“What would happen to you if you were turned over to the Tal’shair?” Jack asked Tomork whose face changed from a smug smile to one of sheer panic he stood up and walked towards Jack stoping before he hit the force field.
“I would be tortured for information before executed for defecting from the empire.” Jack looked at Tomork for a moment before he said. “We want our people back and if we have to we are willing to trade you for them of course if we had information on the weakness of the warbirds shields we may be able to come to some arrangement where we get our people back and you serve time in a federation penal colony which as you know is basically a holiday resort compared to the treatment you will receive from your own people.”
Tormork turned around and looked at the ground as he sighed heavily and said. “I will tell you what you want to know.”
“I will be back.” Jack said as he turned and headed for the door, He may hate Tomork but he couldn’t just stand around as he was transported to his death.
Entering the bridge again Jack walked up to Commander Tan who was still in charge of the bridge. He heard the tail end of Huebners plan and he knew enough to know the massive tachyon pulse would also disable the Romulan life support systems.
“We also have a prisoner who is willing to give us information on the weaknesses of Warbirds in exchange for his serving time in a federation penal colony; it would seem Tomork likes the idea of his execution less than I do sir.” Jack looked back to the view screen and shook his head as he saw the massive warbird staring them down.
“Any plan the Captain chooses to use it may be beneficial to get the information from Tomork we may never get the chance again.”

Crystal was listening to plans for an assault on the Romulan ship, it wasn't her first choice for action but she wasn't ruling anything out at this stage. "Captain on the Bridge !" an Ensign interrupted.
David, Joel, and Crystal, all turned at the announcement, to see the Captain and ships' Doctor exiting the turbo-lift. The Captain seemed well enough but then (apparently) he had seemed that wasy before until he had collapsed. She was going to keep an eye on him. It was an FO job to do that after all. Crystal was also pleased to see Doctor Crane, he had apparently decided he wasn't going to quit starfleet but she was going to make certain that he saw a counsellor when this mission was over.
"Captain." Crystal said, stepping back slightly, so Steven could see the image currently showing.
"My ready room Crystal. I think I need to be brought up to speed." the Captain said, looking at the Romulan vessel seemingly ready to come through the massive view-screen, "David .. You have the Bridge."
Crystal followed the Captain into his ready room as the door closed she started ticking off points on her fingers filling him in on their prisoner and Doctor Crane's suffering at his hands; the shooting that had been going on between the two Romulan ships; the recovery of two of the missing archaeologists and everything else that had been going on.
"So what's your opinion, Capatin. I've been trying to work out a way to get our people back without relying too much on our 'ally' ", Crystal asked.

When the Captain and his FO had finished talking they returned to the bridge.
******************************************************
Aboard the IRW Erkana,
Smoke was filling the bridge and they were going no where fast. Why neither the T'Vana nor the Federation ship had tried to finish them off Tanara didn't know. She was however perfectly willing to take advantage of this 'oversight' by carrying on living.
Commander Danath wasn't on the bridge, he was down in the engine room, Tanara was just grateful she wasn't there. She sighed deeply to herself. She did not believe that she was going to get out of this alive, her Commander's actions had probably condemned them all to death even if he didn't kill them first. She glance around and then tapped a few buttons on her panel.

Her last message had not been detected so she hoped this one would get through also. Of course, each message increased the risk.

Entering the bridge again Jack walked up to Commander Tan who was still in charge of the bridge. He heard the tail end of Huebner's plan and he knew enough to know the massive tachyon pulse would also disable the Romulan life support systems.
Crane brought this up to Huebner and Tan. Huebner replied, "Doctor, I understand your concern about the life support systems, and I assure you that though they will be disabled, they will remain so for ten minutes or less. The air on board the Erkana should remain breathable for about 30 minutes after the system is disabled. Also the Life Support system is not a target my teams will strike at during the assault."
Crane replied, “We also have a prisoner who is willing to give us information on the weaknesses of Warbirds in exchange for his serving time in a federation penal colony; it would seem Tomork likes the idea of his execution less than I do sir.” Jack looked back to the view screen and shook his head as he saw the massive warbird staring them down.
Huebner replied, "Thank you Doctor. Since you seem to have rapport with Tomork would you please obtain any information about the Warbird specifications, locations of key systems and the locations of the prisoners. All this information will make any assault more precise with fewer opportunities for collateral damage or injuries to either Romulans or our crew. I will have Ensign Chell meet you in the brig to assist you. She is a Ktarian Security Officer and is an excellent investigator and interrogation specialist. Feel free to utilize her expertise."
“Any plan the Captain chooses to use it may be beneficial to get the information from Tomork we may never get the chance again.”
Huebner replied, "I agree, and the Captain will need as much information as we can obtain to help him decide on a course of action."
<Tag Crane>
Tan nodded his head, "Joel it sounds like a good plan, but lets explore the information that Tomork holds before rushing into a full out assault. When the Captain and Commander Rose return I will recommend your plan as a contingency plan for rescuing the hostages."
Huebner replied, "Thank you Commander. I will keep you apprised of any new developments from my end."
Suddenly the doors to the Captain's ready room opened with a hiss and Captain Smith and Commander Rose walked out onto the Bridge.

"We're looking at options thats all." David said, looking at the Erkana, "But I'm not one hundred percent sure I'd trust Vorath to keep his side of the bargain ... After all ... He's a Romulan !"
Tan listened as both the Doctor and the Olympia's Tactical Officer both came up with good arguments, but it was all down to the Captain and Exec' as to their course of action.
"Joel it sounds like a good plan, but lets explore the information that Tomork holds before rushing into a full out assault. When the Captain and Commander Rose return I will recommend your idea as a contingency plan for rescuing the hostages."
"Thank you Commander." Heubner replied, moving back to his station. The doctor was about to leave the Bridge, hopefully to get the Romulan in the Brig to give up some usable information, because Tan's idea to get in, get out, and run ! certainly had it's merits, when the ready room door opened ..
Both Senior Officers came onto the Bridge ..........

Crystal and the Captain returned to the bridge. Crystal was determined to get the hostages back and was hoping that the crew had some plans that seemed more viable that her last resort method of storming the other ship.
As they reached the gathering of other senior staff members the comm system crackled to life =/\=This is Centurion Tanara, I believe I can release the hostages if you are willing to transport us away on my signal. Please respond text only on this frequency=/\=
Crystal sighed audibly. "That complicates matters somewhat. I guess we have to decide who to trust." She looked around the bridge, trying to find a better answer in the flickering lights.

Jack nodded in appreciation and replied.
“I will get right to it.”
Jack turned and began heading toward the turbolift, he was formulating a line of questioning he was going to use on Tomork when the Captain and Commander Rose entered the bridge. Jack noticed Commander look around the bridge when the comm. Chanel opened.

Jack raised an eyebrow, the plot thickens he said not to anyone in particular. Jack began running through the options they had in his head. A Romulan who was willing to give information, A way to disable all systems on the Romulan ship, to hand over Tomork or trust this new unexpected ally.
Jack took a deep breath as he thanked his lucky stars he went into medicine and not command this was not a decision he would want to make. Jack wasn’t headed toward the brig anymore he had a gut feeling that the Captain and Commander Rose would make their decision soon, no matter what they decided Jack made up his mind he would support it even if it meant handing over Tomork.
Jack had had enough with the Romulans and couldn’t wait until the situation was over, although he had a feeling a forced counselling session was coming his way, Jack shook his head as he thought about it, he had been to counsellors before and hated every minute of it.
Jack wanted to speak up with his opinion on the situation but instead stood still and bit his tongue as he waited for a decision to be made.

David stood with the Captain and First Officer ..
"Is there any possibility that anyone else picked up that transmission ?" Tan said.
"I don't think so Commander." the duty Tactical Officer said.
David shrugged at his two superiors, it was their call, but he himself felt they should just take their people by force, while they had the opportunity. The longer they hesitated, the more chance of failure of whatever plan they decide on.
Tomork could be an asset, but the newcomer was still aboard the Romulan ship. he could, possibly, cause enough disruption to delay their pursuit should the Olympia be forced to run.
Tan, along with the rest of the Bridge staff waited for the Captains decision ..........
