**Posted in the Point Of View of Dr. Janet Reilly**
Janet had waited anxiously as the Olympia made its final approach to Earth, she had so many things to do and so little time in the hour that it took the Olympia to get to Earth since she sorted out the problem of what to do with Mike Hall, she had thought up a way to convince Rose of Crane’s inability to be Chief Medical Officer.
But her plan had one major drawback she needed to gain access to confidential files stored in the ships computer, she could download them to a PADD but she couldn’t decrypt them no one could except Commander Jack Crane, the files she needed... his Personal logs.
However she had already begun working towards getting access to them, she had been on the comm. Channel for the last twenty five minutes tracking down someone who was rumoured to be experienced in that kind of thing, she spoke to a friend of a friend who had an uncle who knew this guy, until she eventually tracked down the Ferengi, a rather distasteful little creature by the name of Mek. He was working as a waiter in a bar in the city of Sydney Australia, but according to her contacts that was just a cover for his information smuggling business.
After speaking to him he agreed to meet her in the bar in two hours, she had to promise him three slips of gold pressed latinum just for that. Normally Janet was reluctant to spend her money but to finally get rid of Crane once and for all she would pay any amount, although she made sure not to tell Mek that.
Janet returned to her quarters to change into civilian clothing, if she met Mek in her uniform he would no doubt run a mile. After changing and making sure she had the PADD containing Jacks encrypted logs, she made her way back to the transporter room . as she walked down the corridor her heart beating hard in her chest she stopped dead in her tracks, because only ten metres in front of her Jack Crane stepped out of the turbolift.
He didn’t notice her he seemed to busy holding his head, but Janet stood perfectly still non the less, the last thing she needed was Jack enquiring as to where she was going. He turned the corner and Janet waited for a minute before continuing her way to the transporter room.
As she stepped into the transporter room she arrived just in time to see a body disappear in the blue energy of the transporter beam, the transporter chief looked up and smiled politely at Janet as he asked.
“You going to the same place as Commander Crane Ma’am”
Janet raised her eyebrow as she stepped closer to the chief she asked in an innocent way as to not raise suspicion.
“Oh where was the Commander going?”
The Chief smiled as he checked the computer console for the co-ordinates.
“He has gone to.... Starfleet medical.. Said he was late for an appointment or something, I just assumed you may be going with him Ma’am.”
Janet took a deep breath, her plan was in jeopardy Jack was no doubt going to see a counsellor, she had to hurry and find something she could use against Jack, she would give Rose no choice but to permanently boot him as Chief Medical Officer and use her to fill in. Although that was assuming there was something to use against jack in his logs, but she wasn’t too worried everybody had skeletons in the closet they wanted to keep secret. And even if it wasn’t enough to convince Rose to boot him it would probably be enough to blackmail Crane out of his job.
“No Chief I would like to be transported to Paris, France I have a medical conference to attend.”
Janet stepped onto the Padd and waited for herself to be beamed off the ship. Paris wasn’t her ultimate destination but from Paris she would transport the New York and then to Sydney. It should make her movements hard to track, once she had the information she didn’t want to be traced back to Mek, because she doubted he would stay silent if he was questioned by Starfleet security.

"Nothing for you to worry about Commander", Richard replied
Crystal thought he looked a little uneasy as he shook her hand but then having the FO drop in unannounced was probably going to make anyone nervous. It was something she would have to keep in mind. "Umm... we have a problem with some of the plasma relays on the starboard side of the ship, it's nothing serious but I'd like to move the ship over to Uptopia Plantia to receive a minor refit to some of the systems, I won't bore you with the details, could you ask the captain for me?". Crystal smothered a sigh. "I'll take care of it." If she remembered correctly a minor refit like that could be done in hours. She'd sort things out, that was another few hours gone off shore leave.
Ensign Martin was making an effort to be sociable but Crystal's mind was heading else where."Commander can you recommend somewhere on Earth that isn't swarming with politicians?". She smiled at the comment. She often wished the same herself but now she was on the command track she couldn't really avoid them. "If you want some scenery, Lake Victoria's always nice as for general places to go;" Here she paused and thought, it had been a while. "You could try Athens and Berlin."
She gave an apologetic shrug. "It's been a while since I went anywhere on Earth, I'm from Luna. It was good to meet you. I'll let you know when we get the clearance for Utopia Planetia."

A while later Crystal made her way back to her quarters, she had a thousand and one things to do as a First Officer but there was one thing she had to do first. She had never thought that she would actually get here buts she had made. Professor Garner had been very accommodating when she had contacted him to say that she was coming back in system. It had been nearly two years since she had completed her research and several months since she had transmitted her thesis now it was viva day. She had kept it quiet from those on the Olympia as they all ready had enough to worry about, her parents knew but she had given them a short enough notice that they would be able to bring the whole family.
She changed into smart civilian attire collected a copy of her thesis, she had been re-reading it whenever she had a moment on the trip back and walked to the transporter room.
She arrived in Cambridge a short time later Professor Garner was there to greet her and that was when Crystal's stomach started to flip-flop. Seeing the old buildings again had made the whole thing seem real and now she was really nervous. She felt ill-prepared and was sure that she was going to fail. She knew that aside from Professor Garner she would have to deal with Professor Garcia and Professor Tarnak. The latter was a quadrant renowned mineralogist and Crystal new that she was lucky he had been able to spare the time. Of course, his presence made her even more nervous.
She entered the room and settled in her chair, she was trying to calm the feeling in her stomach but she was grateful that she hadn't eaten too recently.
**************************************************** Three hours later Crystal emerged from the examination room, she still felt sick and there were so many things she felt she could have said better, if she could have thought of the words at the time. Most of the viva was pretty much a blur though. She wondered what she was going to do while she waited when a familiar figure in a starfleet sciences uniform approached. It occurred to her to ask V'Sel how she had found out about the viva but the Vulcan started talking first.
"Do you know that they serve proper mint tea in the refectory here?" Crystal didn't but was quite willing to test it.

****Posted In the View of Doctor Janet Reilly****
Janet materialized in Sydney Australia, it was late at night and the moonlight was shining in from the window, it cast a dull light on the public transporter pad.
As Janet stepped outside she was hit with a bone chilling cold wind, she started shivering and cursed under her breath for not bringing a jacket. She had never been to Australia before and had assumed like most it was warm all year around, but she wasn’t about to let the cold stop her from her ‘mission’. She had memorized the directions to the bar that the Ferengi worked at; as she travelled the streets she picked up her walking pace she didn’t know how much time she had before Crane triumphantly returned to the Olympia with a counsellor’s approval to return to duty.
She arrived at the bar aptly named; Fun In The Sun. Janet slowly stepped inside and tried to keep as much distance as she could from the drunken people inside. The bar was darkly lit and was filled with people drinking and having a good time. Janet sat at a stool near the bar and waited for the Ferengi waiter to serve her a drink. About two minutes later the short and fat Ferengi made his way over.
“What can I get for an attractive Humaaaan such as yourself?”
Janet leaned in closer to the Ferengi as much as it disgusted her being close to him she didn’t want anyone to over hear her.
“I made an appointment.”
Janet whispered as she shoved the three slips of gold pressed latinum into his greasy hands. He nodded and whispered back.
“See that green door go through and wait for me there.”
He moved off and Janet slowly made her way to the green door, she looked around to make sure no one was looking and when she was satisfied she wasn’t being watched she slipped through the door.
Inside was a small room filled with crates containing bottles no doubt various forms of alcohol, Janet sat on top of a small crate and waited for mek to show up.
Approximately five minutes later Mek slipped through the door and flashed a rather repulsive smile at Janet. He walked over to a part of the wall that wasn’t blocked by crates and pulled off a panel, inside there was a modest amount of Gold pressed latinum no doubt gained by misdeeds. He deposited the three slips Janet had given him and put back the panel; he turned to Janet and smiled again before asking.
“So what do you need Humaaaan?”
Janet handed the PADD to him and said in a low voice. “I need these files decrypted.”
The Ferengi looked at the PADD and seemed to think for a few moments before flashing the repulsive smile that almost made Janet sick.
“Hmmm Starfleet files it’s... going to cost you twenty bars of latinum.”
Janet lifted an eyebrow and stood up she towered over the particularly small Ferengi and looked down at him before smiling a smile that said ‘don’t mess with me’ and said. “Ten bars and no more Ferengi I can easily take my profit elsewhere.”
Mek squinted at her for a moment before grinning and saying. “You drive a hard bargain Humaaaan ten it is... return in an hour.”
Janet sighed and shook her head as she said. “Thirty minutes and not a second over.” She grabbed one of his ears and squeezed hard making Mek squeal. “Or I will remove your lobes.”
Mek was still squirming as Janet held his ear he nodded as he pathetically said. “Yes, yes thirty minutes... wait in the bar.”
Janet released his ear and the Mek scurried out of the room, Janet casually strolled back into the bar and sat on the stool and waited for Mek to return.
Ten minutes later and unknown to Janet Mek had already decrypted files and figured out a way to triple his profits. Mek had contacted someone using the bars comm. System someone in Starfleet, Someone who would be interested in the files Janet had given him to hack into....

David conversed with Star fleet Command as the Olympia settled into orbit.
Steven left the Bridge and entered his ready room.
Tan began to get status reports and requests for repairs or re-fit of newer, more up to date equipment. It happened every time the ship, any ship, began a shore leave. These had simply been delayed due to the Commodores need to get back to Earth.
As Operations Officer, it was up to David to ensure all repairs, re-fits were carried out and tested before the ship needed to leave orbit.
"Commander." Crystal said from behind him, "You're not planning on going down to the surface ?"
David glanced at the gleaming blue green jewel that was his home, but for the life of him, he couldn't find any reason to visit .. At least, not this time .. He turned to the Exec' ..
"No ......" he replied, "Not this time Commander. Mother is attending a medical conference on El-Adrel four, and as you know, the whereabouts of my Father are currently ...... Unknown." Tan shrugged.
Crystal placed a hand on David's arm for a second.
"Still ... Nothing stopping you taking a few days ... Ireland isn't it ?"
"Yes." Tan said, smiling as he remembered his home town, "Just outside Kerry."
"Just remember David ... 'All work and no play etcetera' ... You have the Bridge." Crystal said, heading for the turbo-lift. Tan watched her go, then sat in the Captains seat. Placing the half dozen PADDs on Crystal's seat, he activated the first one. Unsurprisingly, it was a list of spares that were needed. The list was long and would need cropping .. Sighing, Tan began working ..........

As soon as the Olympia docked, Steve gathered his things and his thoughts and began to leave the ship in all immediate haste for Earth...more specifically, Starfleet Medical. He placed Renora in her little carry cradle and left his ready room. He walked onto the empty bridge and stoof behind his command chair. Placing his hands on the chair he softly spoke: "You're going to miss this." He shook his head gently and turned to exit the via the turbolift.
He went down to the transporter room and was beamed to Starfleet Medical shortly after arriving. He asked several nurses which way he had to go to locate Arya and headed in that general direction. A few minuted later Steve found Arya's room and gently and quietly opened the door to her room. He wasn't too sure why he did it slowly and quietly...Arya was in a coma, so it wasn't likely that she would wake up because he made too much noise.
Steve picked up the nearby seat and placed it next to his wife, and sat down. He picked up her hand and began rubbing it gently. "Hey sweetheart, I made it...I'm here for you. And look, I brought Renora here to see you too." Steve spoke to Arya softly, already tears welling in his eyes. "Please don't leave me. And don't you dare leave our daughter. Please....just hang on." Steve bowed his head against Arya's chest, put Renora down next to her and allowed himself to let all his emotions out. Starfleet captain or no, he was still a human being.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door, and a doctor came in.
"Sorry Captain, I just need to check on your wife's vitals."
Steve wiped the tears away and sat up straight, yet still held Arya's hand. "Of course, go ahead." After a moment or so, Steve asked the question didn't want to ask: "How long does she have?"
"It seems you got here just in time, sir. Judging by these readouts, I am afraid that your wife has no more than a few minutes left with us. I am so sorry."
Steve choked as he tried to take that in. "Is.....Is there...." He cleared his throat. "Sorry...Is there anyway we can wake her?"
"There is, but I wouldn't advise..."
Steve cut the doctor off before he could say any more. "I don't care if you advise or not. My wife is lying here dying. If you wake her up, she will die in a matter or minutes...if you don't wake her, she will still die. What's there to lose, other than me being able to say goodbye to my wife and mother of our child?
The doctor started at Steve, giving no quarter. Finally, he spoke; "Alright, alright. I will wake her. But I mist warn you, when the consoles stop beeping, there will be NO reviving her. Arya will be gone. Ok?"
Steve sighed, trying to keep composed. "Ok, lets do it." He watched as the doctor prepared a hypospray and then squeezed it into Arya's neck. Mere moments later he eyes flutterered open and she looked at Steve.
"Hey you." She said, weakly after a while. "Where are we, and why am I in bed?"
Steve moved closer to her, never once letting go of her hand. "We are at Starfleet Medical....but you don't need to worry about that now. Anyway, look who I brought to see you." Steve picked up Renora from her little cradle and gave her to Arya, still holding her as well, just in case.
"Hello my little darling." Arya whispered to her, "I hope you arent causing your daddy too much trouble." Arya then felt her arms weakening. "What's happening?" She asked.
Steve gulped, "We're here to say goodbye." Tears falling from both him and Arya now.
"Goodbye? You mean I'm?...." Arya didnt even need to finish the question, as she could see the answer in her husbands face.
"Im so sorry. I just want you to know how much I love you...how much WE love you."
Arya was getting weaker and weaker every passing second....it wasn't going to be long now.
"And I love you both too..more than anything in existense." All of a sudden, Arya began blinking and looking at random directions. "My vision has pretty much gone Steve, I can't see you."
Steve stroked her hair. "We are here still...we will always be here. Just be strong."
"Easy for you to say." Arya chuckled, and fell silent for a short while. ".....Oh my." With those last two words, Arya closed her eyes, and loosened her grip on Renora. Steve tightened his own grip on her to make sure she didnt fall. Steve couldn't hear the beeping anymore, and realised that Arya had now gone.
He was now crying uncontrollably. "Goodbye." He managed to get out. "I love you."

I would like to thank Commodore Smith for inviting me to participate in this thread: (Please note: My invlovement in this thread is seperate to Raven's timeline)[/color][/i] The Raven had been at Star base forty seven for over a week. The repairs were going better than expected and they would be ready to depart on their next mission within the next ten days. Carl was pleased with this, He had be given permanent Command of the USS Raven-B only a week earlier. Admiral Mc7_of_9 taking a position on Star base Assailant. In truth, he was eager to get out on his first 'official' mission. Checking through reports in his ready room, his Comm came to life .. =^= Captain .. We have a Comm coming in from Earth .. Marked 'Personal' .. =^= Carl frowned, not sure who would be trying to contact him, but told them to put the Comm through to him. The screen cleared, and he was a little surprised at who was looking back at him ... "Steven ?" Carl said, puzzled at the Comm.
"Carl ... Good to see you again. I'm sorry it has to be under such circumstances."
Torek remained silent, it was dawning on him suddenly way his friend might be contacting him, but Steven voiced the words first ..
"It's Arya ......" Steven said, tears beginning to form in his eyes, "She's gone."
"Steven ... I'm so sorry. she never deserved this illness. Was it qui ......"
"She went quietly. Renora and I were sat with her ... I need to ask you something. You served with Arya, I'd like you to be here for the funeral if possible."
"Well Raven is in no condition to move, but there's always something coming your way, hold on ..." Carl said as he checked the ships currently docked, the Miami was leaving in four hours, she could divert to drop Carl off, "OK .. I'm on my way. Is there anything you need ?"
"Just get here. That will be enough."
"When is the funeral ?"
"Two days."
"I'll be there in one ... Steven, all my thoughts are with you and Renora. Again I'm so sorry."
"See you when you get here Carl." Steven closed the Comm without a goodbye. Carl re-checked the Miami then contacted her Commanding Officer. Six hours later, he was traveling at warp seven toward Earth ..........

Crystal and V'Sel were sitting in the refectory each with a glass of mint tea. Crystal was swirling hers around in the cap rather than drinking it. She was still feeling sick with nerves, not that there was anything more she could do now. She didn't know how long they had been sitting there, she would have guessed that it was approximately forever. No doubt V'Sel could have given her an exact answer but Crystal hadn't bothered to ask.
They had started a conversation but it had now faded into silence.
"Congratulations Doctor Rose." Crystal whirled round knocking her chair over in the process. She wasn't sure she had heard Professor Garner correctly but the look on his face told the story. She hugged him.
"You did good kid," He said, "No let and old man go, I can barely breathe" Crystal let her mentor go and finally broke into a proper smile. She managed to restrain herself from hugging V'Sel but noticed that the Vulcan had let her cool façade slip enough to so a touch of smile.
"Thank-you, for everything." Crystal said as the three of them walked back towards the main building. She knew that she had caused her mentor a lot of frustrations over the years. Still, she had made it this far. Now she had to thank her examiners, tell her parents, her family and her crewmates; although the latter could probably wait given why they had come back.
A while later. Crystal had finished the whirl of congratulations and celebrations at the university. There was a party planned at her parent's home later in the day but now she had a couple of hours to tend to the other things that needed tending to. She went back up to the Olympia taking with her the list of minor changes that needed to be made to her thesis. She was lost in several layers of thought as she walked the ship's corridors. Fortunately most of the crew were planet side so the corridors were near empty.

Ensign Martin was making an effort to be sociable but Crystal's mind was heading else where. "Commander can you recommend somewhere on Earth that isn't swarming with politicians?". She smiled at the comment. She often wished the same herself but now she was on the command track she couldn't really avoid them. "If you want some scenery, Lake Victoria's always nice as for general places to go;" Here she paused and thought, it had been a while. "You could try Athens and Berlin." She gave an apologetic shrug. "It's been a while since I went anywhere on Earth, I'm from Luna. It was good to meet you. I'll let you know when we get the clearance for Utopia Planetia." "Thankyou for the suggestions Commander but I'll be happier staying up her sorting the Olympia out", Richard replied curtiously, keeping a smile on his face until the commander had left engineering. there was no-one on Earth for him anywhere so it would have ben pointless following up eitther of her suggestions. Sighing he returned his attention back to the master display table. Though the refit was minor and would only take a few hours at tops, Richard wanted to make the most of the opportunity at being in space dock. Complete warp nacelle overhauls was top of the list, (heck every Cheif engineer wanted their nacelle's overhauled even if they had only warped around two sectors, but it was better safe then sorry), then a few micro fusion generators, and a spare anitmater storage pod for the, 'upper saucer section' would be nice. As he picked up one of the diagnostic PADDS, Richard felt a stinging pain begin to travel up his spine. Roughly he shook it off for a while checking over his subordinates Level three diagnostic, but it came back. This time stronger, again he tried to ignore it but it just kept building, to the point where he fell to the deck unconsious by the master display. Quickly a Lt. tapped his comabdge, "Engineering to sickbay we need help here straight away". Tag: Doctor

***Posted in the Point of View of Dr. Janet Reilly***
Janet was getting frustrated she had been waiting in the bar surrounded by strange drunks for the last thirty five minutes and still no sign of Mek. She was beginning to worry that she had been ripped off when he finally made his way over to her.
“The files are decrypted.... that will be fifteen bars of latinum.”
Janet was not happy he was late and now he was demanding more money, though she did know better than to expect a fair deal from a Ferengi. She was about to argue over the price when she realized Jack would probably be out of his session now and back on the Olympia. So instead of arguing she gave the Ferengi his money and took the PADD.
As she walked back to the public transporter PADD she was reading through Jack’s log entries, mostly boring recounts of his day nothing that was of any help. That was until she reached a passage from six years ago, while Jack was working for a hospital in New York as a civilian doctor.
She stopped walking and read more it was just what she needed her heart started pounding she had it, a few more hours and Jack would be no more. The passage in question made heavy reference to a board of enquiry regarding a death caused by malpractice. The logs didn’t show how the trial ended apparently they just stopped, as far as she could tell Jack got away with it. Janet could only assume Jack pulled some strings and promised a lot of favours because one day he stopped going to the hearings. While it wasn’t concrete evidence against Crane it would be enough to convince a lot of people he shouldn’t be in Starfleet let alone a Chief Medical Officer.
Janet began running back to the transporter PADD the sooner she got back to the ship the better, she couldn’t wait to see his face as she blackmailed him out of a job, and if he refused she would just anomalously send the document to Starfleet medical and let them find out what happened.
*** On the Olympia*** After going through the transporter pads in different cities she eventually made it back to the Olympia stepping off the transporter padd smiling from ear to ear she nodded politely at the transporter chief as she walked out of the transporter room .
As she turned the corner she found herself face to face with Jack Crane. Janet tried to move around him but Jack stepped in front of her. Janet was nervous as she asked. “Something I can help you with Dr.?”
Jack only raised an eyebrow as his eye locked onto the PADD Janet was carrying. “Doing some reading Janet, is that the new medical journal mind if I take a quick look?” Jack snatched the PADD from her hands and didn’t have to read more than a line to see the Ferengi had been telling him the truth.
Jack sighed heavily as he looked back up at Janet. “Why Janet what did you expect to find in my logs?”
Janet smirked as she looked at him. “I found what I needed to get you booted, an inquiry... negligent death of your patient sound familiar, once it gets out that you squirmed your way out of it your gone.”
Jack had to think back a bit, he shook his head. “You got one thing right Janet I was asked to appear in front of a board of inquiry... but as a witness not a suspect.... I can’t believe you could be so foolish.”
Janet squinted at him. “You are lying.”
Jack shook his head again. “No Janet.. do you really think I would have been given this job if I were guilty of negligent death... think about it.”
Janet stayed silent, the more she thought about it the more it made sense, the realization hit her that her plan had failed and now Jack was going to get rid of her or worse, arrested.
He looked at her for a moment, he could see she was now scared. “What you have done could get you court martialled.... Your lucky Mr. Mek contacted me and not Starfleet security, now get back to sickbay... I want all the medications and equipment accounted for so I know what to request form Starfleet.”
Janet looked confused; her voice was showing worry as she asked. “You aren’t going to turn the PADD over to security?”
Jack shook his head as he pressed some buttons on the PADD he waited a moment before giving her the PADD back. “Why would I there is nothing on here?” With that Jack walked off toward the turbolift.
Janet looked down at the PADD it memory had been erased, but she wasn’t happy she now knew Crane would be watching her closer than ever..
Jack had almost made it to his quarters when Nurse Williams voice came through his Communicator. =/\=“Doctor we just got a call from Engineering they need someone down there right away, sorry to bother you on shore leave but the most of the medical staff are off the ship.”=/\=
Jack sighed as he tapped his comm. Badge. =/\= “I am on my way send Jenkins to meet me there Crane out.”=/\=

Sighing, Tan began working.
He'd been going through the requisition requests for well over an hour, then as he picked up the next PADD in the thankfully dwindling pile, he noticed the shore-leave rota was already open on it. Puzzled for a moment, then remembering that Crystal had been approving requests. He was a little surprised to notice 'his' name on there though. especially as he'd not requested any leave. Then he recalled his conversation with the Exec'
"Sneaky." he said quietly.
But it did get him thinking ... He wasn't even supposed to be up here, his duty shift had ended hours ago. Crystal had mentioned Ireland, and he found himself thinking of home, for the first time in, well, a long time ..
The funeral wasn't going to be for another two day's, so he came to a decision. He'd go down to the surface and visit home .. Well not 'home' exactly, but his home town. there were friends that he could look up, have a few drinks, and maybe even relax a little.
Getting up, he looked round the Bridge, Lieutenant K'lear was running diagnostics on the navigational controls, so he walked over to her.
"Lieutenant. I've decided to take Commander Rose's advice. You have the Bridge until her return."
"Aye ...... Sir." K'lear said, with both a surprised and puzzled look vying for her expression of choice.
~~~~~~~~~~
One hour later, he was entering the transporter room. Now dressed in civilian clothing, but still wearing his Comm badge, he was carrying an overnight bag.
"Chief." he said as he stepped up onto the pad.
"Destination Sir ?" the man asked.
"Lackabane .. Kerry .. Ireland." Tan said,then changed his mind, "Better still, put my one thousand meters from the golf course there."
"Golf course." the man said, slightly confused, but found the co-ordinates and entered them, "Ready Commander."
"Energize."
Seconds later, David found himself in hot, bright sunlight, looking up a long, tree-lined roadway. At the top, two stone pillars, each bearing the crest of the Lackabane Golf Club .. Owned by his closest friend for many years. Smiling, and pleased at his decision to take a short leave, he began the walk to the gates ..........
"Thank you for the lift Captain Bryant." Carl said as he entered the ready room.
"My pleasure Captain Torek." the man behind the desk said as he stood and offered his hand, which Carl took.
"Call me Carl."
"Rich." the man said, "Drink ?"
"Well ... Normally I'd say cappuccino, but as I'm not 'officially' on duty, I'll take a Brandy." Carl said, hoping the drink would help him sleep.
Rich halted his walk to the replicator, and changed direction to a small cabinet in the corner of the room. Reaching in, he produced a small bottle and two glasses. Carl was surprised to see the bottle, Armganac ... Not only was it impressively rare, but in financial terms, would have been classed as priceless.
"This was a gift ......" Bryant said, as he almost tenderly poured the liquid into two exquisitely decorated bauble's, "I think .. In the circumstances, it deserves the best."
Handing one glass to Carl, he lifted the other in a toast.
"Captain Steven Smith .. Deepest sympathy." Rich said.
"Deepest sympathy." Carl echoed, as both drank ..
~~~~~~~~~~
Almost twenty hours later, the Nebular Class Star ship, approached Earth ..
Carl wasn't exactly sure how he felt about being back here, but given the circumstances, his worries, if they be that, would, should, be forgotten for the time being.
=^= Ensign Pelle to Captain Torek =^=
=^= Torek .. Go ahead Ensign =^=
=^= Sir .. The Captain asked me to inform you we are entering high orbit .. Olympia is below us =^=
=^= Thank you Ensign .. I'll meet with Captain Bryant shortly =^=
Closing the Comm, he picked up his bags and headed for the Bridge ... Once he had thanked the Captain, he went straight to the transporter room ..
"Olympia is expecting you Captain." the Lieutenant said as he entered.
"Thank you." Carl said, stepping onto the pad, and nodding.
Less than a second later, he felt the tell-tale grasp of the transporter beam, and the Miami faded from view ..........

Doctor Jack Crane ran into Engineering to see a small group of people crowded around the incapacitated body of an acting ensign Jack had not yet met.
Jack ordered one of the young engineers to get him the emergency medical kit. As he returned with the med kit Jack grabbed it out of his hand and pulled out the medical tricorder, Jack scanned the man and was relieved to see he wasn’t in to much danger, although Jack did see something strange in the readouts that he wanted to get an answer to.
“Transport us to sickbay please.”
Jack said to a lieutenant who was watching what was happening, before Jack could say anything else Engineering vanished and was replaced with the familiar scene of sickbay.
Jack helped lift the ensign whom he had been referred to as Ensign Martin onto the closest bio bed. Jack placed a hypospray against the Ensigns arm and extracted a small amount of blood to test Jack wanted to know what the strange readings were about.
~~~ 1 hour later~~~ Doctor Crane pressed the hypospray against Ensign Martins arm and a few seconds later his yes opened.
“Welcome back Ensign.”
Crystal had been catching up with her slightly neglected FO duties (including getting the necessary clearances for Utopia Planetia) and noted that Dr Crane had returned to duty (to her relief) and she was just about ready to head home to that party when her comm badge chirped.
=/\=Commander Rose, Ensign Galway here. Captain Torek of the Raven is just about to arrive at the Captain's request however I can't raise him. Could you come and meet Captain Torek?=/\=
There was a touch of panic in the young woman's voice, no junior officer liked to be stuck without warning with a Captain to look after. Of course, FOs and Commanders weren't that much different. Crystal sighed and smothered her initial thoughts and replied.
=/\=On my way Ensign, Commander Rose out.=/\=
Crystal made it to transporter room one only slightly out of breath just as Captain Torek was solidifying. She swallowed hard and then stepped forward to greet the visitor.
"Hello Captain Torek, welcome to the Olympia. I'm Crystal Rose, Captain Smith's Exec."
(Captain Torek)
"Captain Smith went to Starfleet Medical as soon as we docked. He hasn't contacted the ship since." Crystal's words were quiet and sympathetic, she knew exactly what the Captain's silence meant and even though she was his FO she felt she had no right to intrude. Maybe the arrival of his friend would help.
~~~ 1 hour later~~~ Doctor Crane pressed the hypospray against Ensign Martins arm and a few seconds later his yes opened. “Welcome back Ensign.”. Ensign Martin felt his eyes slowly open and the hypospray leave his neck. "Thankyou doc", he said sitting up on the biobed still a little bit wuzzy from his faint in Main Engineering. 'Surely it wasn't necessary to bring me to Sickbay surely?' , Richard thought looking about him whilst inside he panicked slightly. His Vulcan mother had suffered from faints alot before she died, Richard hoped that his mind was only playing tricks on him. He looked aound the sickbay as he sat up gently, the wooziness fading as he did so, it didn't look like they werew waiting for him to die. 'Just another dead ensign', his mind told him, but he shrugged it off. "So doc, how long do I have?", he asked Dr. Cane the of his voice jovail. “You are going to be fine, you collapsed due to fatigue and Toblerths disorder a blood disorder that affects those with Romulan ancestors, if you return tomorrow we can get it treated for you.. Until then I order you to take some shore leave.” "Well I do have some shoreleave on Utopia Plantia planned I guess I...", Richard began his sentence smilling before what the doctor said sunk in. His facail expression then changed to one of concentration, it was either that or he showed his anger. A Romulan blood disorder? Romulan? 'No ... he's made a mistake, surely he's made a mistake', Richard told himself in his mind keeping his anger inside for now, there was no way in the galaxy that he was related to a Romulan, not after what they did to his felow crewman on the USS Charleston, 5 years ago. The interrogations, the torture, the pain, it was all embedded into his mind forever. The screams of his ship mates still haunted him at times during the night, the last time he ahad seen her face. In a quiet but warning tone,his teeth grinding he said, "Doctor i think you have made a mistake, there are bno Romulans in my family, only the one Vulcan, please check your scans again". He looked Doctor Crane straight in the eyes.

As Carl's perception of light and time began to coalesce, he began to recognize solid objects. Less than two seconds later, he was aboard the USS Olympia ..
"Hello Captain Torek. Welcome to the Olympia. I'm Crystal Rose, Captain Smith's Exec."
"Hello again Commander." Carl said, stepping from the transporter pad.
"Captain Smith went to Star fleet Medical as soon as we docked. He hasn't contacted the ship since."
Torek could hear and see the concern for her Commanding Officer, in both her voice, and expression.
"OK ..." Carl said, thinking, "I'll need to get to the surface and arrange quarters, but firs ......"
"Captain ..." Crystal interrupted, "We have diplomatic quarters, they're vacant at the moment, I'm sure the Captain would be pleased to have you stay with us."
Carl nodded.
"Just find me something in Officer territory Crystal." Torek said, "I'm hardly Diplomat material."
"Leave the bag there." Crystal said, "I'll have someone take it to your quarters."
Carl put the bag down, then followed the Olympia's Executive Officer from the transporter room. They entered the nearby turbo-lift and Crystal stated the destination.
The doors opened to the Bridge and both Officers stepped out. Rose making her way directly to the ready room. Carl followed, looking at the image of Earth on the view-screen ..... After talking with the Exec' Carl said he would be beaming down to the surface. Once back in the transporter room, Crystal had the Chief set co-ordinates .. Yet again, he felt the tell-tale caress of the beam as it moved his body through hundreds of meters, then he re-appeared in the large foyer of Star fleet Medical ..
Approaching the reception desk, he spoke to the nurse ..
"I'm looking for Captain Steven Smith. His wife, Arya, passed away here ..."
"Captain Smith is in a private room, it's on the seventeenth floor Captain, room number one seven three six. Turbo-lifts to you right Sir." she finished, motioning toward the far wall.
Carl entered and requested floor seventeen ... As the lift rose, he closed his eyes for a few seconds, this was by far the 'ideal' way to meet up with his former Commanding Officer, and he wondered 'how' he would find Steven ..........

Seconds later, David found himself in hot, bright sunlight, looking up a long, tree-lined roadway. At the top, two stone pillars, each bearing the crest of the Lackabane Golf Club .. Owned by his closest friend for many years. Smiling, and pleased at his decision to take a short leave, he began the walk to the gates ...
Reaching the club, he asked about Phil and Michelle, but the steward said they had left for Europe the week before. He was slightly down-hearted, he didn't want the shore-leave in the first place, but Crystal had persuaded him that it would be for the best.
"David ... David Tan ... Is that you !"
David spun on hearing his name, and got the shock of his life ..
"What the HELL are you doing here ?" he asked the newcomer.
"Visiting .... Jenny's here too." the man said, an almost hypocritical grin on his face.
David didn't wait to hear more, if Collins was here, then it was possible they were looking at him again. He didn't want, or need that. His past was just that .. Past .. As for Jenny ....
Picking up his bag, he headed for the door.
Collins said something, but he neither heard, or cared precisely, what it was .. Heading down the long drive-way, he almost kicked himself for taking the shore-leave in the first place. What the hell was he thinking of. his life was with star fleet, and on the Olympia.
Less than one hundred meters down the path, he fished out his Comm badge from his bag ... Looking back with regret and remorse, he tapped the badge ..
=^= Commander Tan to Olympia ... One to beam up ... =^=
'What a complete waste of time' Tan thought, then his view of Ireland vanished as the transporter beam engulfed him ..........

The room that Steve was located in was pretty sparse. It was just a small room for people to sit or wait in while they were at the medical facility. With Arya having passed away less than hour beforehand, Steve was in this room collecting his thougts while his wife was taken away and prepared for her impending funeral. He just stood and stared out of the window, not moving an inch. There were no tears from his eyes...in fact there wasnt any emotion at all.
Sitting on the desk at the side of the room was a padd and a small box. Inside the box was a small gold rank pip. Aooarently, according to the padd, Starfleet Command had promoted Steve to the rank of Commodore for his exceptional service to Starfleet. The padd and box had been sent earlier on during the day, so Command was not to have known about Arya's recent death at the time. When they arrived, Steve had answered the door, but was looking out the window exactly as he was doing now. He hadn't turned to see who was there, or even answered them. Truth be told, he didn't even hear them. When he eventually looked at the door, he noticed the things on the table and went and inspected them.
Right now, Steve just left the pip in its box. Now was not a time for celebrating...it was a time for mourning. He couldn't bring himself to accept it all...not just yet. Not until he had said his final goodbye to his wife.
He finally shook himself out of his trance and decided to go for a walk. He approached the door and was just about to step through when he almost bumped into a familiar face.
"Carl. Thank you so much for soming." He extended his right hand to Carl.
"Please, come in."

Crystal organised quarters for Captain Torek and then spoke to a couple of people who hadn't got back to her about the Olypia's scheduled trip to Utopia Planetia. Finally she checked her chrono and realised that she had less than an hour to get to her family's celebration. Her parents had encouraged her to bring some of her crewmates but Crystal hadn't passed on the invite knowing most of the crew were all ready busy and that a 'request; from a First Officer could be seen as an order even off duty.
She changed into a pair of loose black trousers and a satin shirt a couple of shades brighter than science blue. She tucked her communicator into her pocket knowing that with the Captain out of contact she was the one people would call about the ship. She headed for the transporter room and met Commander tan just leaving. He seemed a little down.
"Are you all right, David?" Crystal asked

She shrugged in response. "I finally finished my doctorate, my parents are hosting a party. I don't suppose you'd be interesting in a attending. Probably be fairly dull and quiet, excepting my cousin, lots of arty types but the food'll be good." She wouldn't be at all bothered if he turned down the invitation she wasn't at all sure she wanted to go herself but she didn't have a lot of choice. "They told me to invite everyone, but I don't think they really grasp how many people serve on a Prometheus class..."

Jack Crane was taken a little by surprised but if Ensign Martin wanted him to check the results again that is what he would do. Jack handed the PADD that had the results of the first blood test to the nurse who was stood next to him and said.
“Re-check these results please.”
The nurse mad her way across sickbay to the main sickbay console and began her work Jack turned back to Ensign Martin and said.
“Ensign I am happy to check the results as many times as you like but I am confident in the first results you are part Romulan.”
<tag Martin>
The nurse returned with two PADDs in her hands and Jack nodded as he looked down at them both one was the original results and one was the second, and as Jack had expected they were both exactly the same results. Jack handed both PADDs to Ensign Marin and said.
“This is the first set of results and this is the second, I am sorry to tell you but the test was right you are defiantly part Romulan, you are free to head down to earth and book a session with a doctor at Starfleet Medical to get a second diagnosis if you like.”

Richard didn't want to listen, he wasn't part Romulan he couldn't be, his mother was a Vulcan. T'pau the third, born in the Sity of T'pol. She was the only alien and she was Vulcan. Vulcan!Logical, patient Vulcan, now she was a cold, calculating Romulan. It was like he wanted to rip half of him apart, and tear it to shreds. He couldn't be a Romulan Hybrid, he just couldn't be. Though he had admired their technology and battle tactics, Ensign Richard couldn't think of a single good thing about them. The screams, her face, Alexanderia's face as she was pulled away from the cell, from him forever. 'He wouldn't be lying, doc isn't one for practical jokes', Richard thought to himself dismissing the possibility. He was half Romulan and there was nothing he could do about it. why didn't his mother tell him? Did father know? As a member of Starfleet intelligence, he should have done, but he didn't say anything about it. Quietly Acting Ensign sat there on the biobed watching the nurse rerun the scans, praying it had been a mistake. He stopped hiself from doing or saying anything, a stay in the brig wasn't what he wanted or needed on top of all this. The nurse returned with two PADDs in her hands and Jack nodded as he looked down at them both one was the original results and one was the second, and as Jack had expected they were both exactly the same results. Jack handed both PADDs to Ensign Marin and said. “This is the first set of results and this is the second, I am sorry to tell you but the test was right you are defiantly part Romulan, you are free to head down to earth and book a session with a doctor at Starfleet Medical to get a second diagnosis if you like.” Ensign Richard looked at both PADD's seperately at first, before comparing them directly side by side. They were the same, no fdifferences at all. Toblerths disorder, a simple blood disorder had just wrecked his life. His pointed ears, and the slight arrow like dent in his head were dead give aways now when he felt them with his fingers. Hi,'mother' had always explained the dent away by reminding him that vulcan's and Romulans were biologically simular, and that their were bound to be a few, 'coincidences' in both races's physical appearances now and again. No wonder his second name was Lucifer. "No thankyou doctor", he said trying to smie as he hopped of the biobed, "I have some leave booked on Utopia Plantia, I'm just waiting for the captain's approval". Refitting the Olympia was tko him a nice break from the usual rountine of syatems maintiance, and batle damage repair, not to mention the sharp jerks of the ship, work was the best thing for him right now after this news. 'Doctor Crane though probably wouldn't class refitting the ship as a, 'break', he thought to himself, waiting for Cane's reply. -Tag Doctor Cane and Crystal Rose-

The doors opened and Carl stepped into a brightly lit corridor.
He checked the board opposite and began to walk toward room one seven three six to find his friend. Checking the door numbers, he almost bumped into someone as they stepped from the closest room.
"Carl ..... Thank you so much for coming." Steven said, holding out a hand for Torek to shake. Both men stood silently during the handshake, and Carl broke that silence ..
"How are you Steven ?"
"Please come in." Smith said, moving to one side to allow his friend to pass, "I'm as well as can be expected .. Given the circumstances."
Carl entered the room, he was in the equivalent of a living area, with a room off to the side. The door was closed, but Carl knew the room contained a bed, along with all the medical paraphernalia to attempt to sustain a life. That, unfortunately, wasn't always possible ..
"Can I get you a drink Carl ?"
"Cappuccino please." Torek replied, then sat quietly as Steven got them both drinks and sat in the chair opposite.
The two men began to talk quietly ..........

Lifting his bag from the transporter pad, David headed for the door. he barely acknowledged the transporter operator as he passed, and didn't even notice a woman stood just outside the doors.
"Are you all right David ?"
Tan had taken two full steps before the comment registered. He turned to see Crystal looking at him, a look of concern on her face.
"What ... Sorry Commander, just ... The past coming back to haunt me. You going somewhere ?" Tan asked.
"I finally finished my doctorate, my parents are hosting a party. I don't suppose you'd be interesting in a attending. They told me to invite everyone, but I don't think they really grasp how many people serve on a Prometheus class ....."
David was hardly in the mood for any sort of gathering at the moment, let alone a party. But Crystal looked as if she needed the company more than he needed the solitude.
"Have I got time to dump this ?" he asked, raising the bag to eye level.
"Yes, I'll meet you back here in ten minutes ?"
"OK." David said, heading for his quarters ..........

“Well I wouldn’t really call repairing the ship shore leave but as long as you don’t overdo it you can spend your time however you wish, just remember to return here tomorrow for treatment.”
Jack sighed as Richard Martin walked out of sickbay, Jack knew he should really be taking his own advice and take some shore leave of his own, the only thing was he really had no where he wanted to go. Jack thought about going to New York and trying to look up some old friends but ultimately decided against it deciding to let the past stay in the past.
Jack walked over to his office and sat behind his desk, he needed to fill out a bunch of paperwork and sort out the duty roster and a bunch of smaller things that needed his attention.
Jack Crane was still relatively new to the Olympia and had not yet made any friendships so he knew it was very improbable anyone would notice he was working through shore leave, and with Sickbay staffed with a with half the normal amount the chances of being interrupted was also minimal, in a way Jack found that rather depressing but shook of the feeling as he began work.
After an hour Jack was now putting the finishing touches on the duty roster. Jack again found himself thinking of ways to kill time but still nothing came to him so he stretched back in his chair and raised his feet on the desk and tried to slip into sleep.

Crystal and David beamed in to transport station nearest Crystal's parent's house. Crystal was unsurprised to see which of her relatives had turned out to escort her to the party. It was Jedda. She was surprised to noted that the young woman had grown several centimetres since they had last met, then again that had been nearly two years ago and Jedda was 18 now. It seemed Crystal was going to remain the short one in the family.
"David, this is my cousin Jedda Rose. Jedda, this is Commander David Tan the Olympia's Chief Operations Officer."
Crystal thought for a second that Jedda was going greet David with a hug but in the end settled for a handshake.
"Nice to meet you Commander," Jedda said. "I don't know if Crystal mentioned it but I'm planning to go to the Academy in the autumn." She grinned. "Of course my parents don't really get it. Tell me what's the Olympia like and" she paused and glanced sidelong at her cousin. "What's Crystal like as an officer Dad said she'd never be able to focus on one thing long enough."
Tag: David.
Crystal blushed somewhat although it was true neither her parents or Jedda's had really 'got' the reason their daughters wanted to be out among the stars. She debated poking her cousin but in the end settled for a wry grin. "Now, now, you don't want to get him into trouble. Wait until I'm out of the way before you ask questions like that..."
Jedda continued to babble as she led the way to the marquee Crystal's parents had had decked out for the party. There was a banner hanging across the middle saying 'Congratulations Crystal' and a barbecue and buffet laid on. It seemed they had been busy in the hours since her viva. Crystal noted that the banner was decorated with her mother's distinctive artwork. There were maybe twenty people present.
Crystal turned to David. "Thank-you for coming. A warning; if anyone asks your opinion on a style of art say that 'you feel the artist's emotion through their work'. Do not say you aren't familiar with that style or you will get a hour lecture on it." Jedda laughed.
"Don't worry they're mostly harmless." She looked round quickly. Checking none of the more long winded of her relatives were around. "Crystal your mum said to send you to her as soon as you arrived." Her cousin sighed.
"You could have warned me." It was a vain protest of course her mother would want to see her. She noticed her parents in once corner. "I suggest you two escape now. I'll catch you up when my parents let me go."

As they approached the house, a young woman came toward them, David could see Crystal relax a little at the sight ..
Once the introductions were out of the way, Jedda linked David and began chatting away, seemingly unaware that she was embarrassing her cousin.
" ...... What's Crystal like as an officer. Dad said she'd never be able to focus on one thing long enough."
Tan noticed a slight reddening of Crystal's cheeks and wondered how mischievous he could make his reply .. He settled on an 'official' tack ..
"Well .. She's turning out to be a much better Executive Officer than I think I would. She doesn't work me too hard too, that's always a bonus." he said, grinning.
He wondered if he'd made some sort of error as he noticed both women looking directly at him in silence, then relaxed as they laughed in unison before continuing to the party itself.
"Thank you for coming David." Crystal said quietly, "A warning though. If anyone asks your opinion on a style of art say that 'you feel the artist's emotion through their work'. Do not say you aren't familiar with that style or you will get a hour lecture on it." Jedda laughed at this comment and promised to steer him clear of anyone 'interrogating' him.
"Go get a drink you two." she said, nudging them toward the bar, "Crystal, Mother will want to see you at some point, but you could always escape while you have the chance." she said, glancing back and smiling at Tan as she walked away.
Crystal picked up two small glasses, handing one to David.
"Drink this. Everyone is expected to try Mothers punch, then we'll go find the real stuff ... I may need it before today's out."
Tapping the glasses together in a toast, David looked round at the assembled family and guests, not knowing which was which, but cheered that he was in good company ..........
