After searching the rest of the "town" and finding more of nothing, Will was glad to be returning to the Raven. He and the XO had no sooner settled in on the bridge and heard the report on was apparently the Dua Ceti system when the COO exclaimed:
"Sirs! Someone is accessing the higher command functions from the computer mainframe!"
"What!? Pinpoint source of user."
"Yes, sir..I can't believe this.. sirs, I'm not sure what I'm reading.."
The XO jumped over to the Ops console and looked at the information on Marcus's screen.
"Is this right, sir?"
"Someone is isolating the functions for the self-destruct sequence to one console.. where is it? Track the source, Lieutenant." Blakus told him again.
"Deck 8, Section 34-3 beta. Counsellor Biers' office?"
"You're with me," Will heard as the XO ran past and tapped his arm. They were both in the lift and on their way in less than a second.
They reached the counselors room and Will quickly punched in his security lock override code. He and the XO rushed in with phasers at the ready. As sson as they saw the counselor leaning over the console, the XO wasted no more time. He pressed his trigger and the counselor hit the floor. Will rushed forward to the console.
"What the hell was he doing?"
"It appears as if he was trying to blow up the Raven, sir." Will replied.
"Trying?" asked Blakus.
"Yes, sir. He didn't have time to enter the final code sequence. It looks like we stopped him in time."
Looking down at the body on the floor at his feet, Will tapped his comm badge. =^="Jamison to brig. Sent two guards to Counselor Biers quarters right away."=^=
"Aye, sir." came the immediate response.
While waiting for the men he had requested, Will turned back to the console.
"What's up commander?" asked the XO.
Quickly responding, Will said, "With your permission sir, I will cancel the commands that are already entered. Don't know what he was up to", Will said as he nodded toward the unconsious man, "but if he has accomplices, I don't wanna leave what he already started for them to come finish."
"Carry on, Commander."
"Yes, sir." Will turned back to the console. "Computer. Terminate previous self destruct order."
Please state security code to continue.
"Jamison. Alpha alpha one delta four." Will stated.
This security code is not sufficient enough to cancel previous self destruct command.
Shocked, Will quickly turned to the XO. "Sir. I have a level four, beta one security clearance. The only ones on the Raven higher than mine are you and the captain. There's no reason my command codes shouldn't work."
Just as shocked, the XO responded. "Step aside Commander. Let's see what my codes do for us."

"Sir ... Someone is accessing the higher Command functions from the computer mainframe ...!"
"What ?" Blakus jumped out of his seat, "Pinpoint source of user."
Carl listened as his Exec' worked. There was no need to jump in with something Blakus had undoubtedly already thought of. Mister Marcus located the computer console used to access the mainframe. It took less than a minute then they had the answer. Torek nodded for Blakus to deal with the issue and asked Marcus to do all he could to shut out Commander Biers' access.
"Sir. Phaser-fire in Commander Biers' quarters." one of Jamison's team said from the Tactical station .. Torek hit his Comm badge ..
=^= Captain to Blakus .. What's going on down there Andae ? =^=
"Sir." Marcus said, a slight tremor in his voice, "Self-destruct protocols have been activated."
=^= We're clearing them now Captain .. What .. Let me check ...... =^=
There was a slight hesitation then the Exec spoke again.
=^= ...... Commander Jamison's access code didn't halt the self-destruct .. I think Biers put in something other than a standard access protocol .. I'm imputing my code now ...... =^=
"Self-destruct has been canceled Captain." Marcus said, relief in his voice.
=^= Captain .. Commander Biers is unconscious .. I'm having him moved to the Brig for questioning .. Mister Jamison has now canceled all access for the Councillor =^=
=^= I'll meet you there Andae .. Have someone from Biers' office meet us there too .. Torek out =^= Carl closed the Comm then spoke to Jake.
"Lieutenant Marcus. You have the Bridge. Set heading for the Dua Ceti star system, warp five ... Engage when ready. I'll be in the Brig."
"Aye Sir." Jake replied as Carl entered the turbo-lift ..........

Blakus settled his hands over the keypad of Counsellor Biers' personal console, and prayed that his command codes would be sufficient to cancel whatever mysterious codes the Counsellor had used. Admittedly, the self-destruct had not actually been set, but the protocols that could enable the system with a single vocal command had been. Blakus didn't know about anyone else, but he preferred not to have the Raven a few words away from unavoidable destruction, until they could reach a Starbase and have it deactivated by the appropriate Starbase's SFC general override protocol.
To the XO's, and the onlooking Commander Jamison's relief, the codes worked. Although he was pleased, Blakus was also a bit confused, why would his codes make any difference at all? So Counsellor Biers had used a codes of a security level higher than that of Jamison's but lower than the XO's? Blakus was not aware that such a clearance level existed.
Immediately after the console had been shut out of the self-destruct protocols, the two security guards requested by Commander Jamison arrived in the room. "Take Counsellor Biers to the brig," Blakus said to them as soon as they had entered. The two of them looked around, taking in the situation, then they acknowledged Blakus and lifted the Counsellor up. Their faces were blank, betraying no sign of emotion, but Blakus theorised that they must have been fairly confused.
"I'll join you soon Commander," Blakus said to Jamison as the security chief left with the two guards and the inert Counsellor.
Blakus was left alone in the Counsellor's office. He twisted around, taking in the layout of the place and felt himself smiling a little. He sat down at the Counsellor's desk and brought his attention to the console on it, quickly he looked up the Counselling department's staff manifest. After a brief scan-through, Blakus settled on one name. This will do nicely, he thought. Inexperienced, but perhaps earnest, such a person might add a fresh perspective to whatever the Captain had in mind. Someone not so set in the ways of being a Starfleet officer might help, on the other hand, it could well turn out to be a hopeless gamble by the Raven's relatively new first officer.
Blakus made his way to the appropriate quarters and hit the chime. The door promptly slid open and the Counselling officer stood before him in full uniform. "Acting Ensign.. Ariana Solis?" Blakus asked after checking his PADD to make sure. The officer nodded. She was young, of course.. Blakus observed, but the XO was sure that she would suit the role that she was about to undertake.
The two made their way to the brig in relative silence, although Blakus did make the occasional comment to which Ensign Solis would reply shortly and sharply. Upon entering, Blakus saw that Daniel Biers was already within one of the cells. Captain Torek was present, as he said he would be. Commander Jamison was standing towards the back of the room, close to the wall keeping an eye on things.
"Captain," Blakus nodded at his CO as the latter turned to watch him enter. Acting Ensign Ariana Solis, trainee chief Counsellor," he introduced her to Torek.
<Tag Ariana and Carl>
Blakus stood back, deciding to let others take charge of this, unless of course he was asked to do the 'questioning'. While part of him wanted to take charge, the more arrogant, stubborn area of his personality wanted to watch the proceedings, so that he could analyse the coming exchanges from a separate perspective and draw his own conclusions from there.

Jamison and the others headed for the brig carrying Biers along. As soon as they reached their destination, Jamison entered his codes into one of the cells control panel.
"Throw him in there." he ordered.
He began filing his report while awaiting the arrival of the Captain and XO. A moment later, Captain Torek entered the brig. Will immediately jumped to his feet.
"As you were, Commander." said the captain. "Commander Blakus will be here shortly and we will begin."
"Aye, sir." responded Will.
Still to wired up to sit back down, will took his PADD and moved over by the back wall. He was still standing there when the XO arrived with a young woman that Will hadn't met but knew from the Ravens manifest that she was soon to be the new Chief Counselor. the XO began making introductions.
"Captain, Acting Ensign Ariana Solis, trainee chief Counselor."
"Ensign." the captain curtly said with a nod as he turned to his XO.
"Let's get this over with Andae. I wanna know what the hell Biers thought he was doing."
Than turning to Jamison, he added, "Open the cell, Commander and let's bring him around."
"Aye, sir." replied Will.

As Carl entered the Brig, the lone Security Officer stood to a casual attention, this reflected the 'relaxed' attitude the Captain encouraged among his crew .. "He's still unconscious ?" he asked, glancing at the prone body unceremoniously dumped on the cot. "Yes Sir," replied the Officer, "Hasn't uttered a peep since he was brought in ...... Though I did get the feeling a moment ago that he was, maybe, dreaming ?" the woman concluded. "Dreaming." "Aye Sir .. He seemed to be 'muttering' to himself for a second or two, then nothing." At that point the Exec' entered, accompanied by a young Ensign. "Captain ... Acting Ensign Ariana Solis, Trainee Chief Counselor." Blakus said. "Ensign." Torek said, before turning to his Exec', "Let's get this over with Andae. I want to know what Biers thought he was doing ... Open the cell Commander and let's bring him around." he ordered Jamison. "Aye Sir." replied Will. In the Cell, Biers was seemingly in a deep, fitful sleep. Carl nodded to Andae, who for lack of a hypo-spray, leaned forward, and grasping the Councillors shoulder shook him violently awake ... Carl remained silent as Blakus stepped back, deeming the treatment justifiable in the given circumstances, but he wouldn't let the XO go 'too' far. Biers opened his eyes, puzzlement the first expression on his face. He looked around the room, realization that it was in fact a cell in the ships' Brig. "Sir .. What's happening .. Why am I here ?" he said as he looked at Torek, then Carl thought he saw the subtlest of changes in the mans' eyes. But before he could react, Biers launched himself from the bed. he cleared the almost three meters between himself and the Captain before anyone could react. the full weight of the man hit Torek full force, thrusting him backward trying desperately to regain balance, but the bulkhead got in the way of that, and both men smashed into it with a sickening thud ! Carl felt consciousness slipping from him as Biers' full weight landed on him, and his vision clouded. The man was lifted physically from him, but not before Carl slipped into the black of unawareness .......... < tag Andae / Will / Ariana > OOC: OK .. Seems the Councillor has gone all Schizophrenic on us, so step up and let's get him to the funny-farm ASAP .. Oh, and look after your CO too ...

Jamison stood quietly by and at the ready as the XO violently shook Biers awake.
"Sir .. What's happening .. Why am I here ?"
The next thing Will knew, Biers was launching himself at he Captain and he heard the two of them slam into the bulkhead. Will was on Biers in an instance, snatching him off of the captain and sending him sailing into the opposite wall of the cell. "Restraints!" he shouted to the other guard in the brig office. As the second security man entered, Will turned to see the XO knelt down beside the captain. Will quickly slapped his comm badge.
=^="Jamison to sickbay. The captain's been injured. We need a medic to the brig right away."=^=
=^= "On my way, sir".=^= came a reply.
"How's it look, sir?" Will asked the XO with a nod of his head toward the captain.

Remembering the young ensign, Will turned his attention to her next. "Are you alright?" he asked. Trying to lighten the heavy mood, he smiled, nodded toward Biers and quickly added, "Is that what happens when you've been counseling us nutcases for too long?"

"I will be OK Doctor."
"I will be the judge of that Captain." Traks replied, placing a hypo-spray on Torek's neck then administering a sedative.
Carl winced at the hypo send microscopic particles through his skin to enter directly into his blood stream. He needed to get out of Sick-bay and back to the Brig. Whatever had happened to Commander Biers could happen to anyone else on the ship. In their present circumstances, that was the last thing the Raven needed.
"I'm keeping you here for a few hours Captain ..." Traks raised a hand to silence Torek before he could protest, "... You have a concussion and strained neck muscles. You need to rest."
Carl lay back in resignation, then tapped his Comm badge.
=^= Captain to Bridge .. Status report =^=
=^= Lieutenant Marcus Sir .. We're heading for the Dua Ceti star system at warp five as ordered .. Nothing on long-range sensors =^=
=^= Very well .. Torek out =^=
He tapped the badge once again.
=^= Torek to Blakus =^=
=^= Blakus =^= the Exec' replied.
=^= What's happening with Mister Biers Andae ? =^=
=^= He's been sedated and is in restraints for his own good .. It took three of us to drag him off you and one of them is in a worse condition than you were =^=
Carl could see the Security Officer on a nearby bed. He didn't look too good and remained unconscious as several medic's worked on him.
=^= Is it something contagious ? =^= Torek continued.
=^= Ensign Solis thinks not Sir .. She thinks it could be a mental issue .. She still needs to talk to the Commander but as he's out cold we're holding off waking him at the moment =^=
=^= I'll be in Sick-bay for the next few hours .. You have the ship Commander .. Keep me informed =^=
=^= Aye Sir =^= Blakus replied, closing the Comm.
Carl looked at the Officer on the bed close by and hoped he would recover ..........

After shaking Biers awake, Blakus stepped back from the cell and away to the left. He wanted to give the Counsellor as much space as possible to put him at ease. Intimidation of prisoners was one thing that Blakus was vehemently against, only if it struck a nerve so deeply would he warrant such an action.
As soon as Biers had fully regained consciousness, his eyes centred with alarming speed on the Captain, standing directly in front of the cell. The forcefield was still down. In a flash that not many in the room immediately realised for themselves, the Counsellor leapt across the space of the cell and on to Captain Torek. It wasn't long before it became apparent that Biers was in something of rage. The XO, Commander Jamison and a security guard leapt after Biers and the Captain as they slammed into the wall opposite the line of cells.
The Captain grunted as Biers brought the full weight of his body against him, and slumped to the floor losing consciousness. Blakus struggled to grapple hold of the mad Counsellor as he shaped to strike the Captain in the face. The XO was not sure, but to him the Counsellor seemed remarkably strong, more so than he expected, the strength with which he shrugged off his assailants felt superhuman. The security guard trying to grab hold of Biers' left arm was propelled into the wall next to the Captain by the Counsellor's flailing arms. Eventually before any more damage could be done, Jamison's hands found purchase on the Counsellor, and such was the fury and desperation behind the Security chief, he managed to hurl the Counsellor across the room and into the opposing wall.
Blakus patted Jamison on the shoulder as the latter ordered the other guard to fetch bonds to restrain the Counsellor. With a sudden wash of relief that the brutal skirmish was over, the XO leant down beside the Captain and the other guard - who had similarly been rendered unconscious - and called for Traks.
* * *
Blakus was leaning with his back to the wall, opposite one of the cells in the brig. Biers was contained within that cell, he was laid out on the bunk at the back of the cell, still unconscious. A junior medic had been around a few minutes before, she had cautiously entered the cell - under Jamison's eye - and administered a couple of tests. She also checked for any lasting injuries from Blakus's phaser shot and the recent scuffle.
The XO was growing tired of this situation. At first, his reaction to the Counsellor's antics had followed the demands of his job, and he had been reacting on pure instinct. There was, however, only so much the XO could do, his thoughts were beginning to return towards the Raven's overall predicament. Focus was the key now, however hard that may be to keep.
"Commander Jamison, wake the prisoner," Blakus ordered, pushing himself off the wall. "Ensign Solis, let's ask some questions."
The CTSO deactivated the forcefield and drawed his phaser, he nodded to the guard nearby who went up and pressed a hypospray to the Counsellor's neck. Immediately after doing so he jumped back out of the cell and Jamison quickly reactivated the field. Biers' eyes shot open.
"Counsellor Biers," Blakus started, "I have not known you very long, but already you've created a fairly bad impression. Would you mind explaining your actions over the past two hours?" Blakus did not ask it in a derogatory tone, but he could see how he could be mistaken. He could see Ensign Solis give a reaction in his peripherary. The XO nearly grimaced, he had to admit sometimes his interrogatory tactics left much to be desired.
"Over to you Ensign," he said and stepped back. Looking at Biers, Blakus was sure that the murderous rage he had seen in his eyes earlier was gone. Replacing it was the look of someone who was confused, even scared. The XO felt, almost inexplicably, a pang of sympathy.

Carl was figuratively climbing the walls as he waited for Traks' permission to leave Sick-bay. He had been on the bio-bed for over an hour, and felt more than well enough to return to duty.
The questioning of Commander Biers was taking time, more-so due to his switching from one consciousness to his 'alter-ego' ..
=^= Bridge to Captain =^=
Torek said a silent thank you as he glanced at Traks before tapping his Comm badge.
=^= Captain =^=
=^= Lieutenant Marcus Captain .. We've picked up a ship on long-range scanners .. I've informed Commander Blakus =^=
Sitting up, Carl swung his legs off the bed, feeling a momentary bout of dizziness as he did so.
=^= Can you identify it ? =^=
=^= It's the vessel we boarded Sir .. There's more .. We're still showing zero life-signs and whatever we brought over I'm not too sure it was the rift device =^=
Carl frowned at this statement, getting to his feet, glancing at the Doctor, who nodded approval, he began moving toward the doors of Sick-bay.
=^= How so Mister Marcus ? =^=
=^= Sir ...... There seems to be a rift forming 'inside' the ship =^=
Carl stopped dead in shock. "How could a rift be forming in an unmanned ship !" he said out loud, causing several Officers to glance in his direction. But he completely ignored them and began heading to the nearest turbo-lift at a run. He knew that if a rift opened, even at this range, the Raven would be pulled in. It would be a lottery where, or even 'when' they would emerge. Granted they could appear in the Sol system, but could just as easily end up on the other side of the Galaxy !
"Bridge !" he said as the turbo-lift doors closed.
=^= Have Commander Blakus meet me on the Bridge =^=
=^= He's already on his way Sir .. He was going to Sick-bay but re-routed when he knew you were on your way =^=
Carl watched the bulkhead and wondered impatiently just how slow this lift was planning on going ..........

Post by Scott McLean on Dec 30, 2008 23:24:31 GMT
McLean sat slouching in his chair with in the private confines of his office in Main Engineering, his right finger and thumb squeezed the bridge of his nose in an attempt to ease the suffering his brain was feeling.
βWhat is it daddy?β Vanessaβs little voice broke the tense silence of the small office.
Scott looked up at his daughter, her brown eyes pierced through the thick haze he felt washing over his normally clear mind. For the first time today he actually felt like smiling, βItβs complicated honey.β McLean replied in a casual tone.
He had hoped that his comment would end her line of questions, but he couldnβt forget that she was a McLean at heart, and being inquisitive was in her nature, βWell, why donβt you just tell me. I could help.β
A small laugh of sarcasm left McLeanβs mouth which ended in a large smile, βOkay, sure.β He said as he picked up his daughter and placed her on his knee. In front of him was a pile of PADDs, which showed specifically the power loss the Raven was experiencing, but what the PADDs didnβt show was where the power was going.
βOkay, so you see this right here?β McLean pointed to the top yellow line that indicated the normal power levels for the Galaxy Class Starship.
βYes.β
βWell, thatβs where our power is supposed to be at.β
βThen whatβs that?β Vanessa pointed to the hashed red line just several points below the solid yellow line.
βThatβs where our power readings are right now.β
βWell that doesnβt look so bad.β Vanessa observed.
βNormally itβs not,β McLean confessed, βBut normally we know where the power loss is coming from. This time the power just seems to be vanishing.β
βWell, why donβt you just follow it?β Vanessa asked innocently.
βWe canβt just follow it honey.β
βWhy not?β She persisted.
βBecause thereβs no way to track itβ¦β McLean eyes shot open as his brain started to kick back into gear. He eyed his daughter, but not as a father would, but as an engineer who just heard the solution to solving the light speed barrier for the first time. The funny thing was that it was a 10 year old who just solved a problem a crew of engineers couldnβt seem to grasp. βThank you honey.β McLean said as he kissed the top of Vanessaβs head before putting her back down.
McLeanβs feet couldnβt move fast enough for his excitement as he moved to the main console in Main Engineering. His fingers danced over the console and before long fellow engineers began to gather around.
βChief, what are you doing?β One asked.
βIβm sending a low frequency signature pulse through our EPS system. Then Iβm going to calibrate our sensors to detect only this pulse. Once the sensors pick up the pulse it will tell us where our missing energy is going.β
βI donβt get it.β One tired engineer said with a blank look on his face.
βI do.β Another engineer said, his spirits high from the sudden realization of the simply solution to the problem. He began to work along side McLean, working ahead on the sensor grid.
βWeβve been running diagnostic upon diagnostic, and scan upon scan trying to find our losses, but the bitter truth was that our sensors kept coming up with nothing. There just isnβt a way to track power escaping our system. This will give us a specific signal to look for and nothing else.β
βIβm ready when you are Chief.β The junior engineer said from his console.
βIβm initiating the pulse now.β McLean said as he finished working on his console before looking up at the sensor results.
The pulse took just a few seconds to work its way through the ships entire EPS system, before returning back to its point of origin. Seconds ticked by without a single loss of power, but suddenly something happened.
βDid you see that?β One engineer asked in astonishment.
βThere it is again.β
βSo itβs bleeding our stardrive section.β McLean said, βbut where is it going?β
The sweep began to go wide until his eyes stopped on something he hadnβt anticipated. The pulses continued through space into the uninhabited ship the Raven had been towing. What alarmed him now was the increase in power the ship was draining from the Raven.
βMcLean to the bridge.β
βGo ahead Commander.β
βIs there a reason you can think of as to why that derelict ship would be stealing power from us?β

James started to examine the patient; Oh MY!!: Nurse prep this patient for emergency surgery, she has several ruptured blood vessels in her brain and is hemorrhaging. What happened down there? She has all the signs of a forced mind meld."
As James began the surgery, it turned out to more complicated than it first appeared. "Ok the vascular regenerator is not working, fast enough; give her 30cc's of Benzocyatizine."
The nurses head snapped around; "But Doctor she is not Betazed."
James replied; I know but she has isoboramine in her system, and it is interfering with with the regenerator."
The Nurse administered the injection and the isoboramine levels began to subside allowing the Vascular Regenerator to do it's job. As James finished up he turned to the Nurse; "I am pleased that you know your drugs but if you want to question a medical order in my sick bay do it while you are following the order. You will learn that I generally know what I am doing. If I am unsure of something I will be the first to admit it; at least out of sight and hearing of the patients. Now move her to recovery and keep a close eye on her vitals and brain wave activity."
As James exited the surgery suite a triage team brought an injured Co into sick bay, Traks moved to the bio bed and began to scan the Co. Injecting the Co Traks laid his hand on Torek's chest as the Captain tried to sit up. "I'd lie flat for a few minutes to give the injection time to reduce the swelling or you mite just end up on the floor. If this keeps up I will have to give you a discount rate." Turning to his nurse he whispered; "Keep him here for another 90 minutes or so, and release him if his vitals are still normal.
Returning to his office Traks noticed a message waiting on his screen. As Traks exited sick bay he addressed his nurse "Well another house call."
After arriving in the Brig and listing to the Counselor's questions; Well counselor I seem to rember reading about a Vulcan diplomat who was turned into an assassin after returning from a mission evolving the Romulans. At first everyone thought him a Romulan impostor, until the Adepts of Mt Selia took charge of the case. I will contact a friend in inelegance as well a Klingon General who seems to keep a close eye on the Romulans. In the mean time I will send a nurse to preform a psycotricorder base line reading on you."
Returning to sick bay Traks watched the Co sitting on the bio bed looking like a caged tiger. Just as Traks was ready to tell the Co he could leave, the comm;
=^= Bridge to Captain =^=
After listing to the report from the bridge Traks looked at the Captain and nodded jerking his thumb over his shoulder. "Go I'll follow to make sure you get there." Traks followed the Co to the bridge.

"Commander Blakus, this is the bridge." Ensign Solis's questioning of the former Counsellor had been in full swing, Blakus had been listening intently to all of the Biers' answers or lack there of. He did not know what was going on, or so it seemed. But now the XO had received a call from the bridge, he moved out into the corridor, not wanting to interrupt the proceedings any further.
"Go ahead Mister Marcus," he said into his commbadge, knowing that the COO had been given control of the bridge.
"We're picking up a ship up on our current heading to Dua Ceti. You won't believe it, but it's the ship we found the 'rift-device' on, and another rift is forming by itself."
"I believe you Lieutenant, I've become used to things not making sense on this little adventure. I'll be there shortly after I collected the Captain from Traks' clutches."
"No need, sir. I'll comm him," was the quiet reply from the bridge.
"Thank you Marcus," Blakus said evenly, re-entering the brig. "Join me on the bridge Commander?" he asked Jamison. "It appears our little ship is back." After telling Solis to continue, and for the security guards present to watch Biers like hawks, Blakus made his way to the bridge.
He must have been in the turbolift behind Torek because the Captain looked to be just settling back in as the XO arrived. The CMO was present also, evidently keeping an eye on Torek. "Traks," Blakus nodded to the CMO as he walked past him, making his way down to the command arena. The Doctor stayed a while longer before returning to sickbay. Jamison took back the Tactical rail.
"Mister Marcus, range to the ship." Blakus requested as he sat down in the first officer's chair. He perched forward in the seat with one hand on his knee and the other loose by his side.
"0.04 parsecs, sir. Another thirty minutes at warp 9.5." The Ops officer reported.
"Is it possible to escape the rift if we turn the ship around?"
"Negative, if it opens it will be impossible for us to escape," Marcus reported, furiously tapping away at his console, "We will be dragged in just like before."
"Fantastic," Blakus muttered sarcastically. He stood up, the chair was making him jittery, he was not accustomed to sitting in the middle of a crisis, he never had when he was in charge of the Engineering department back on the Victory. "Then the key is to prevent the rift from opening," he deducted. "Captain, I recommend we increase speed, the sooner we get to that ship the sooner we can do something about this rift."
<Tag Torek>
We can also, Blakus thought, figure out why the ship seems to be forming a rift all by itself...
βMcLean to the bridge.β Blakus blinked, that had caught him off guard.
βGo ahead Commander.β Torek said from the Centre Chair.
βIs there a reason you can think of as to why that derelict ship would be stealing power from us?β
Andae looked back at Torek. There certainly was a reason. "Commander McLean," he spoke, "The ship is forming another dimensional rift.. Are you suggesting that that ship is draining our power?"

"Join me on the bridge Commander? It appears our little ship is back."
At first, Will was hesitant about leaving the counselor with Biers but he decided that he had to have confidence in his men. If a situation arose, they would handle it.
"Aye, sir." Will replied.
After accompanying the XO topside, Will took his place at Tactical.
He listened to what everyone was saying as he was checking his own readouts.
"Mister Marcus, range to the ship."
"0.04 parsecs, sir. Another thirty minutes at warp 9.5."
"Is it possible to escape the rift if we turn the ship around?"
"Negative, if it opens it will be impossible for us to escape, we will be dragged in just like before."
"Fantastic. Then the key is to prevent the rift from opening. Captain, I recommend we increase speed, the sooner we get to that ship the sooner we can do something about this rift."
Will noticed a few heads looking around nervously and simply stated what he knew some of them were thinking.
"Sirs." Will said "It may mean destroying the ship in order to prevent the rift from opening. If that's the case, we loose our only chance home."
βMcLean to the bridge.β
βGo ahead Commander.β
βIs there a reason you can think of as to why that derelict ship would be stealing power from us?β
"Commander McLean. The ship is forming another dimensional rift.. Are you suggesting that that ship is draining our power?"
Will knew that pretty much sealed it. There would be no way in hell the captain would let that vessel to continue draining power from the Raven and risk leaving them all dead in space. He began preparing torpedoes and phasers. He wanted to be ready the second the CO gave the command.
He also noticed the look on everyone elses faces and knew that some of them were already thinking about how to take control of the situation. Was there a way to once again, board the ship and figure out how to stop the rift from opening? If not, and the rift did open and send them somewhere else, where would it be this time and would the Raven have enough power left to travel?
As they raced toward the vessel in order to reach it before the rift completely formed, Will began to wonder if maybe Biers had had the foresite to know that self destructing the Raven was the only way out of this.
"Sir. We'll reach the vessel in 10 minutes." Will said.

"Zero point zero four parsecs Sir. Another thirty minutes at warp nine point five." The Ops officer reported. Carl watched as the gap slowly closed on the other vessel. "Captain, I recommend we increase speed ... The sooner we get to that ship the sooner we can do something about this rift." Blakus said. "Increase to warp nine point seven." Torek said, knowing full well that they couldn't hold this velocity indefinitely due to the power drain, "Time to ship ?" "Sir we will reach the vessel in ten minutes." Jamison said ... ~~~~~~~~~~"Match speed." Torek said as the ship appeared on the view-screen, "Is there any way we can safely board her without dropping from warp ?" "Sir. The power levels are dropping exponentially as we close the distance. We will need to either get over there and stop the transfer, or stop the rift from forming." Will said, double-checking his information. "Could we slow both ships ?" Carl asked. "Without firing on her I'm not sure." Blakus said with a frown. Carl was obviously deeply concerned at the prospect of beaming a team over at their current speed. There was every possibility that they would materialize half in, half out, of a bulkhead. He didn't want to loose anyone, least of all that way. But they were running out of time !... "What about extending our shields around the ship and making a hard dock using the umbilicals ?" he mused. Several people went silent at the suggestion, the logistics of holding two ships as close as twenty meters at impulse were tricky enough, and Carl could see that the idea was something approaching daunting for Ensign Warren. "If we only take essential personnel. Two, maybe three Officers ......" Blakus said. "You prefer to risk a beam over Andae ?" "We're limited with our options Captain ......" the Exec' began. < tag: Andae / Lewis >"OK ... We'll go with that. Mister Warren. I need you to ensure that both ships remain in formation. Zero deviations. Do you think you can do that ?" "...... Aye Sir." Lewis said, turning back to his console, trying hard not to swallow. Carl nodded to Blakus .......... < tag: All >Come on All, let's get to work ...

*After following the CO to the bridge Traks had taken up station at Science console two; after hearing the exchange he approached the CO.*
"Sir I can see you seem to be ok; if you need me I will be in the transported room in case all does not go well. Having ones molicules broken and reassembled is bad enough without throwing warp mechanics into it. You are beginning to sound like a Klingon I once served with."
With that Traks left the bridge to prepare for what the worst.

Andae saw it as his duty to go back to the smaller vessel, that was not far ahead of them now and still draining their power, because there was no perceivable way of preventing further power drainage. The communication with Commander McLean had been short and simple. The Chief Engineer had confirmed that the vessel was stealing the Raven's power. Blakus had asked what he planned to do about it, McLean had said he would get back to him. That had cut off one avenue of thought, and Blakus knew that they were left with very few others.
"You prefer to risk a beam over Andae ?" Torek asked him, asking for confirmation of Blakus's earlier defiant statement.
"We're limited with our options Captain," Blakus said matter-of-factly, already starting to move towards the turbolift. "I don't think we can risk a hard-dock with that ship, the exponentially increasing drain on our power would mean we'd run out of that commodity fairly quick, that close to the ship."
"What do you suggest?" Torek asked as Blakus moved to the bridge's upper level.
"We should close to five hundred kilometres and hold as steady as possible once there, then we'll beam over. Any closer, we may start losing too much power, any further away and transportation would be exceedingly tough." Torek nodded and turned to Ensign Warren, telling him to keep the Raven as still - relative to the smaller ship - as possible.
Blakus almost felt like going alone. He did not know what force was telling him to, but the strong urge was there. Becoming a first officer at last, Andae? he asked himself as he got into the turbolift. He knew Torek would probably not agree with it though, which was why he had the obligatory Tactical and Security officer with him. He also informed Commander Traks over the comm that he was wanted for the away team, the CMO had seemed.. well, not willing when he was on the bridge earlier, but he had indicated that he expected to go.
Also, if Blakus wasn't mistaken, he would find Traks ready and waiting in the transporter room. Blakus and Jamison arrived in the transporter room, and along with Traks, transported once again over to the smaller vessel that was again threatening to open up an interdimensional rift. "Commander, good to have you with us," Blakus said offhand to Traks. "There is a chance, Traks, that we may find a certain engineering Lieutenant on this sojourn. He may need your medical assistance."
At least, we can only hope we'll find him... Blakus sombrely thought as the transporter effect cascaded around his body, and took him to the paradoxical enigma that was the rift-ship. It did not occur to the XO that he was more concerned about Lieutenant Moore than he was about the possibility of beaming into a bulkhead. The transporter operator looked on with trepidation as she pressed the controls, this was a very dangerous beam out.
It was as soon as they had fully materialised on the other ship that they felt it. Blakus's first thought was that something had gone wrong with the transport. A moment of panic ensued as he checked to see if any part of his body was not now fused with the material of the ship's hull. Nope, all fine there... what's that sound? he asked himself.
Ensign Warren and the transporter chief had done their jobs perfectly, none of the away team were dead, it was something else. The three of them stumbled forward a little. "Let's.." Blakus began, but he could barely hear himself. He gasped with pain. It was an extraordinarily high pitched tone, incredibly amplified as well, it could barely be heard in the human audial range. Blakus felt it piercing into his temples, giving him a terrible headache and aggravating him no end.
"Commanders!" he yelled, he was only just heard by the two others. Although the sound of it itself was not enough to drown out his voice, the numbing headache and sensory overload it gave them all was. "Commanders, we need to get to the rift device, that is what's doing this surely!"
The two nodded and they stumbled forward again, holding there temples, trying to stop themselves collapsing on the deck and losing consciousness. As they progressed, Blakus felt his vision going blurry and he started seeing red in his periphery, his eyes were vibrating so badly that they were becoming hopelessly bloodshot. The XO just mustered the strength to keep looking up every now and then, luckily he found that he recognised his surroundings, the room which held the rift-device was not far away...

Will heard the noise and began feeling the effects of it as soon as he was completely released from the transporter. Pressing the palms of his hands against his temples in an effort to try to thwart the noise, he could barely hear the XO talking to the doctor and himself.
"Commanders! Commanders, we need to get to the rift device, that is what's doing this surely!"
All Will could do was nod. Making their way ahead, Will began to notice that they were close to where the device had been the last time they were here.
"Stop thinking!" he told himself. "It just makes the pain worse."
It also felt as if the noise was getting louder and no matter how hard he pressed his hands to his ears, it didn't stop. He did realize that it lessened the noise, however. He quickly reached down, and as the doctor watched and wondered what he was doing, Will began ripping his uniform shirt at the bottom. He quickly rolled the pieces into small balls and inserted them into his ears.
"Yes!'" he said excitedly.
He quickly rolled out two more clothe balls and passed them to the doctor. "NO SENSE IN RUINING ANOTHER UNIFORM!!" he shouted.
Apparently noticing the commotion behind him, the XO spun to see what was going on just in time to see the doctor place the pieces of shirt into his ears.
"WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING?" he shouted as Will extended out his hand, palm up, offering the XO his very own pair of hearing protection.
"IT AIN'T PRETTY BUT THEY WORK." Will shouted before adding a mumble, "Somewhat."
With the noise dampened, the pain slowly began to subside enough to where they could actually stand it. They started forward once again in an attempt to reach the room that held the device.
They quickly found the room and as they entered, Will noticed Lt Moore laying off to the side of the room and he appeared to be unconscious. At least Will hoped that was the problem. He and the Doctor both made their way over to the young lieutenant and knelt beside him.
"How is he Doc?" Will heard the XO ask from across the room.
Since Commander Traks had things in hand, Will stood and made his way over to Commander Blakus.
"So what's the plan, sir?"

The trio entered the room, it was a moment of nostalgia, if that was the correct word, for Blakus and Jamison. Not so for the Raven's CMO who immediately rushed to Lieutenant Moore's side. Blakus was shocked that the engineer was still here and alive, anything could have happened to him, and there was no guarantee that they would have found him here, in this odd dimension on this equally odd ship. How was it draining power from the Raven when it was unmanned?
Blakus asked how Moore was, he only just realised that he didn't know if Moore was in fact alive or not. Traks confirmed that he was alive, and that he was merely unconscious. Strangely though, the Doctor was unable to bring him around, why was that? What had happened to Moore that he should be undisturbable?
=/\=Raven, this is Lieutenant Moore! The device is... working. I didn't do anything.. I can see something, something bright.=/\= Moore stopped, for he had become transfixed by what he was seeing. Besides, the distortions and noise from the device was probably starting to block out his communication.
The device was rotating at incredible speed, too fast for Moore to be able to follow, it blurred in his vision. From the device's centre, a light, bright enough to blind.. akin to alighting magnesium, but in the centre of that light was something.. darker, he could not make it out. Moore shielded his eyes with a hand, and averted them elsewhere in the room. The spinning device cast its light off the dark walls of the room, illuminating the shadowy recesses of the place's corners with fantastic patterns of light, spinning so fast...
Inexplicably, the walls of the place started to become translucent, letting through the light of the device, as well as the light of the surrounding space. Suddenly Moore was afraid, his earlier captivation giving way to feelings of abject fear. This was utterly alien, utterly unknown to him. Who knew what would happen to this ship, he was probably going to die, he realised with a calm that took him by surprise. The engineer could now see the Raven through the translucent/transparent bulkhead, the form of the Galaxy class ship was becoming blurry, Moore reasoned that he was beginning to pass into the rift, if he had not already done so.
But if the rift was forming from inside the ship, what was going to happen? Ideas of the vessel being turned inside out flashed through Moore's mind, but that didn't occur. He happened to blink, and when he opened his eyes, he was standing on a plateau of white. Indeed, white was all around him. Was he dead?
No, he was not. There was a dark patch ahead, it looked surprisingly similar to the device's light before.. something, had happened. He approached it, it grew only slowly, slower than he would have expected given common perception of depth and speed. His feet did not make a sound on the white 'floor'. As he got closer and closer, the dark patch's size suddenly leapt up several orders of magnitude. It was huge! He backed up, and it shrunk to a patch no longer than a centimetre in his vision. This was a dream surely, for some reason, he could not look at the shape directly. All he knew for sure, was that it was alive.
"So what's the plan, sir?"
Blakus looked at Jamison, he almost felt as if he'd been in a sort of trance, staring at the rift device, and the very small, but interestingly (and alarmingly) growing patch of light at its centre. It was powering up, and would soon envelope them, and the Raven. "We need to destroy this thing," he said to Jamison, pointing at the device, "Transporters won't do it, we tried before and couldn't get a lock. Let's hope these pattern enhancers work." Blakus had just remembered to bring the pattern enhancers that he now had slung over his back, it was impressive for him considering they had been in such a hurry. He tapped his commbadge to check his plans with the Captain.
=/\=Raven this is Blakus, Captain I know there is a terrible noise, I recommend you dampen high frequencies on your commline, just hope we don't have to scream soon or you might not notice the significance.=/\= Blakus smiled at his quip, that predictably fell on deaf ears. =/\=We are going to proceed with trying to beam this device off the ship, hopefully then you can destroy it with phasers, sir. Also we've found Lieutenant Moore, Traks recommends he be beamed to sickbay, he's unexplainably unconscious. Just make sure the transporter operator doesn't get confused what or who he's beaming where.=/\= Blakus ended dryly, this time not smiling.
<Tag Torek & Raven>
There was no guarantee this plan would work, Blakus knew. They had, of course, recently found that it was - now - perhaps more to do with the ship itself rather than the device, that generated an interdimensional rift. Still, they had to exhaust all possible options.
"Ok, let's fit these pattern enhancers around this device, Will. May I call you Will?" Blakus said to the CTSO. They had to get this done quickly, having no idea when the rift would form.
<Tag Jamison>
As they set about fixing the enhancers in place, Blakus spoke to Traks who was still trying to tend to Moore. "Doctor, would you prefer to return to the ship with the Lieutenant, or do you want to stay and experience the fun?" he asked him.

Carl could only wait to here from his away team, and he knew better than to pester his Exec' for a report. "Sir. I've increased power to the inertial dampers to compensate for the tremors caused by the rift." Marcus said. "Acknowledged." Torek replied, immediately noticing the reduction in vibrations. =^= Raven this is Blakus .. Captain I know there is a terrible noise I recommend you dampen high frequencies on your comm-line .. Just hope we don't have to scream soon or you might not notice the significance =^= Carl grinned at Andae's dry wit as he continued. =^= We are going to proceed with having the Raven beam this device off the ship .. Hopefully then you can destroy it with phasers .. Also we've found Lieutenant Moore .. Traks recommends he be beamed to sickbay .. He's inexplicably unconscious .. Just make sure the transporter operator doesn't get confused what or who he's beaming where =^= =^= Stand-by Commander =^= Torek ordered the transporter Chief to lock onto the device and Mister Moore. The Rift device would be beamed twenty thousand kilometers off their Starboard, and Moore to Sick-bay. =^= Energize =^= Several things happened at once then ... The device began to shimmer as the transporter beam took hold, then both it and Lieutenant Moore vanished. But the rift remained almost fully formed ! Blakus began to yell a warning but it was too late. The explosion caused by the Raven's phasers was tremendous. Sending both ships tumbling through space .. Raven fought hard to regain her stability but Carl could see, through the view-screen interference that the other ship wasn't doing as well. =^= RAVEN TO BLAKUS =^= Torek yelled. =^= Rif ..... orming ..... et us off th ..... breaki ..... =^= Carl jumped out of his seat. He could see the rift expanding beyond the confines of the vessel before them, but his first priority was to get his Officers to safety ! =^= Transporter room .. Get a lock on the away-team and get them back here now ! =^= Agonizing seconds passed as Carl waited, but his patience ran out. =^= Transpor ...... =^= =^= Got them Sir =^= the Chief interrupted. "Mister Warren ... Get us the hell out of here. Any direction, maximum speed !" "Aye." Warren replied. Already the massive ship was turning on her axis and beginning to jump to warp. But the brilliant white light put a halt to that .. Everyone and everything on the Raven froze, as time itself seemed to stop. The event horizon of the rift gently, almost tenderly caressed the Galaxy Class vessel .......... OOC : OK all. I'm going to leave it to your imaginations as to whether we have gone into the rift and got closer to home, or found ourselves with a much longer journey ahead.
(Kind of a 'first come first served' thing) So I'm eagerly awaiting the outcome ...

"Ok, let's fit these pattern enhancers around this device, Will. May I call you Will?"
Will couldn't remember the last time someone had called him Will instead of Jamison or by some rank.
"By all means. Will would be a change of pace from what i'm normally called." he said smiling.
Will sat about placing the enhancers and than stood by as the XO informed the Captain of the situation. He heard Captain Torek give the command.
=^= Energize =^=
He watched as the transporter beam took hold of Moore and the device. Just as they vanished, all hell seemed to break loose. Will found himself tumbling around the ship as if it were spinning through space. He than felt the transporter take hold of himself but not before he banged his head on something really hard.
"DA....." he started to yell as he was enveloped by the beam.
"MN!!!!", he finished upon materializing on the transporter pad.
He glanced over and saw the XO sprawled out on the pad next to him. As he try to stand to go help him to his feet, the room began to spin and he promptly dropped back down onto his rear end.
=^= Got them Sir =^= he heard just before a set of hands took his arm.
"Are you alright, sir?" the chief asked.
"I'm find. Let's get the commander to his feet."
They both walked over and began helping the XO up.
"Are you alright, sir?" Will asked Commander Blakus.
<Tag XO>
As the Commander finished his response, Will once again noticed the room becoming fuzzy and he wavered before catching his balance again.
"Are YOU okay?" the XO asked.
"I'm fine, sir. I think I just need to get to the bridge."

Movement ... Stillness ... Then ... Carl watched, almost from a distance, as the Raven seemed to shrink away from him ... In the background, if indeed it could be called that, a bright white light grasped every iota of his attention. But the ship, his ship, his crew, were still there. Almost on the periphery of his attention.
He couldn't understand what was happening to him, but he knew that his first and only thought was for the crew and ship .. struggling forward, as if walking through syrup, he tried to reach for the Helm, 'so far away' he thought, but then the scene before him changed. He was looking down on an alien world, greens, reds, blues, and all colors between, shimmered as if in the haze of a hot sunny day. Still the Raven was there. He could see the land masses and sea's below him, but something else was there too. Something inexplicable, moving, alive ..... Then. Nothingness spread it's deathy shroud over the jewel of the Sol System ..... As fast as it had started, the phenomenon abated, as if only a dream or distant memory .. Carl checked the view-screen, hoping almost beyond hope that he would recognize a star system. but nothing looked familiar from here. "Helm. Where are we ?" "Checking Sir ....." the disorientated helm officer said. Torek hit a switch and spoke. =^= All departments .. Damage reports to the Exec' as soon as viable .. Captain out =^= "Well Mister !" "Sir ....." Ensign Warren said, after a moments double-checking, "The only recognizable system is Dua Ceti, almost, one hundred and eighty light years away." The Bridge was totally silent as they tried to take in the information ... Almost two hundred light years would mean two months at high warp just to reach a point where they could aim for the Sol system. Torek was in no doubt that the Galaxy Class star ship could make the journey with consummate ease, but considering what he, and no doubt other members of the crew had just gone through, he was more than uneasy they would suffer on a mental, concious, even sub-concious level in their current situation ... "Set course for Dua Ceti ..." the Exec' said, glancing at the silent Torek, "Warp nine." "Course laid-in." Warren acknowledged. With one last glance at the immobile Captain, Blakus gave the order to engage .. The massive ship made her graceful leap into warp and the stars began to stream past the view-screen ... Carl remained still, his eyes locked on the image projected before them. Carl couldn't vanquish the image of Earth he had seen .. Not the image of the planet, their home, but what the blackness had done to their world ... Every living thing, from single-celled organisms, to the most advanced being on the planet, had been wiped out in seconds. Leaving a scorched, barren, DEAD husk of a once thriving planet. A single tear, just one, because that was all his body had the energy to supply, began it's slow traverse down his cheek. The salty taste as the fluid touched his lips almost caused him to faint in surprise, but he gathered himself and began an excruciating walk toward his ready room. No-one spoke as the Captain left the Bridge ... No-one needed, or cared to ... Because each and everyone of them had suffered in their own private hell. All of them hoped that their Captain hadn't suffered 'too' much ..........

Will and the XO made their way to the bridge just as Captain Torek spoke.
"Helm. Where are we ?"
"Checking Sir."
The CO then hit a comm switch and spoke once more....
=^= All departments .. Damage reports to the Exec' as soon as viable .. Captain out =^=
He turned his attention to the helm once again.
"Well Mister !"
"Sir .....The only recognizable system is Dua Ceti, almost, one hundred and eighty light years away."
After a brief silence, Commander Blakus stepped toward the helm.
"Set course for Dua Ceti ...Warp nine."
"Course laid-in."
"Engage."
Will watched all of this, and his panel for any new signs of anything, in silence. He watched as the Captain left the bridge with a mournful look upon his face. He could only imagine what the man was feeling but if it was anything like what Will was feeling, than it wouldn't be good for the crew.
Will thought back to the last mission when they had gotten caught in a rift than and didn't know if they would ever see home again. He couldn't believe the odds of being caught once more on the very next mission would have been this low. He himself had been in StarFleet for a while but there were several new people on board the Raven that had just come aboard right before the last mission. He was sure there would be some that were scared to death. But Will had served with Captain Torek for a while now and believed that if anyone could get the Raven and her crew through this, it was him.
Will was brought out of his daze by the sound of the XOs voice.
"Commander? Everything okay?"
"Fine, sir. Just a little dizzy. Guess I bumped my head harder than I thought."
"Do you need to report to sickbay?" asked Commander Blakus.
"No, sir. I'll be fine. Besides. My place is here for now. There's no telling where in space and time we are and if we'll come across that damn device again. If something starts to happen, I wanna be here for it."
Will went back to checking his station and began wondering once again.
"With the device apparently destroyed, what do we do if this isn't the right system this time?"

It did not surprise Andae one bit that something had gone wrong, but the thing that made it even more unbearable for him was that he should have seen it coming. Destroying the device that close to the Raven now seemed ludicrous. The benefits of hindsight.. he thought as the transporter grabbed him from the wildly spinning ship a second before he impacted with one of the walls.
The transporter beam's cool, caressing tendrils withdrew themselves from his body, and Blakus felt as if he'd been released from a spring, for he had been in mid-air when he was transported.
A white field, as far as the eye could see, fading away to unknown grey in the far distance, unreachable by foot, Blakus knew immediately. He did not know how he could, but his pure instinct told him that that was the truth. This was familiar. The drop to the white surface before the Raven's XO was precipitous, but what he was actually standing upon, he did not know. He blinked, and to his confusion and horror saw the transporter room. It was like some distant image, abstract and removed, only visible by the eye happening upon it, rather than seeing being able to turn and watch it directly. The abstract forms of Commanders Jamison and Traks were there, and so was the transporter operator in the background, his hands about to grab hold of the CTSO. They were all frozen there in space and time, their faces and uniforms an inexplicable, bizarre mix of false colour and shade. And again the room was gone from his perception, back to the white.. But there was nothing else, nothing at all. Was this it? Blakus did not know why it shocked him, but for sure, something was missing.
The XO dropped to the floor near to the wall of the transporter pad with a thud. He stayed on the floor facing the wall, and all he thought about was how much is left shoulder blade and hip were hurting from the fall. He heard talking behind him, and next, Jamison was helping him up.
"Are you alright, sir?" the concerned Security chief asked.
Irritated that the other two in the team seemed unhurt, Blakus gently shrugged Jamison off. "I'm fine," he muttered, brushing off his uniform jacket. Jamison didn't look much better himself, even though he had materialised on the pad standing up; maybe that hadn't done him any favours, the CTSO looked light-headed. Blakus asked if he was okay and checked on Traks too, and after they had recovered departed the transporter room. Blakus was last out. Before he left, he realised that he was missing a couple of pips from his collar. Searching around quickly, the XO found them in the corner of the transporter pad. Bending down, he picked them up and carefully reattached them to his red command collar. Briefly he wondered what would have happened if he had not found them, would the crew recognise him as their first officer with only the pip of an Ensign adorning his collar? Blakus would not blame them for it, he had hardly had time at all to get to know the Raven's crew on a personal level. Sombrely and slowly, he made his way back to the bridge.

The ship was at warp now, and heading for the distant Dua Ceti in what would be a two month journey. That was at least, better than things had been before. Not long ago, the crew had no idea where they were, or how they could get home. Now they had a beacon, a distant beacon yes, but it made them feel infinitely closer to the safety of Federation space, and that provided the crew with some timely and much needed solace.
Blakus sat in the central seat once more, observing the bridge's activity. How far he had come since arriving in the fleet of this sector! It felt like a lifetime ago now, that first day on the USS Victory.. fresh from the academy as a Lieutenant and commanding the engineering department. Had he changed that much in the time between? Andae wasn't sure, but what had changed was his wealth of experience. After surveying the bridge, his eyes finally turned to the door of the Captain's ready room. Not long ago, Captain Torek had made his way unsteadily to that door, to the calming reclusion of the chamber beyond. Seeking privacy, space for personal thought, was something Blakus could eminently relate to, but there was something that needed talking about.
"You have the bridge Will," he announced to Jamison at the tactical console. "Call me at the first sign of any trouble."

The XO walked to the ready room and chimed the door. After a ten second wait, he heard the Captain's voice beckoning him in, he entered. The Captain was at his desk. "Sir," Blakus nodded solemnly. The CO suggested he sit down, Blakus lowered himself into the seat opposite Torek. "It would seem we have a long journey ahead of us," he said after a while, not really sure how to ask what he wanted to ask. Torek only nodded in response.
Another minute's silence.
Eventually, the XO spoke again, "When we went through the rift," he started saying slowly, but stopped. He found himself looking out of the window behind the CO's desk, at the stars flying by, their bright points distorted by the ship's warp bubble. "What did you see, sir?"

Sitting at his desk, he activated his screen .. Scrolling down the menu manually rather than using verbal commands, he found what he was looking for ..
Earth ...... A blue green jewel floating serenely in the blackness of space. It was a recorded image of course, there was no way to get a real-time image from this distance, but it was reassuring non the less.
The door chime activated, and after what seemed an eternity, he allowed the person to enter. Blakus walked into the spacious room, with it's ornate antique desk that Carl had had shipped from Earth, it was his piece of 'home' he always said.
"Sir ..." Andae said quietly. Torek motioned toward the seat opposite, and Blakus seated himself then continued, "It would seem we have a long journey ahead of us."
Blakus watched his Commanding Officer in silence for almost two minutes, then spoke again ..
"When we went through the rift ..." he started saying slowly, but stopped. He found himself looking out of the window behind the CO's desk, at the stars flying by, their bright points distorted by the ship's warp bubble, "What did you see, Sir ?"
It took Carl almost another minute for the question to sink in, the images in his head were real, or as real as something could be to the mind. He turned the Comm screen round so his Exec' could see ..
"It's all gone ......" Torek said, his fingers touching the screen for a fraction of a second, "That's what I saw Andae. Family, friends, my ten year old goddaughter, I was supposed to be watching her in her school play you know, all gone. Earth is nothing but a scared ball of ash and rock now ......"
Carl was finding it hard to swallow, and Blakus got up and used the replicator to get him a glass of water. After taking a sip, Carl continued ..
"They burned Andae. Men, Women, Children, CHILDREN !" Torek shouted, slamming his fist into the Victorian mahogany desktop, "Chloe ...... My goddaughter Andae, she ... Cried SO much as the flames bur ...." Carl couldn't go on, the images were unbearable.
Tears were flowing freely down the Captains' face. Andae let the man grieve, then spoke.
"Capt ... Carl ... It wasn't real. We all felt, saw, experienced, 'something' ... Earth, Chloe, everyone, is still there, you have to believe that. Do you want me to get the Doctor up here, he could give you something ?"
Carl wiped the tears from his face, more than conscious that his Exec' was concentrating on the large window behind the desk, thus giving him time to compose himself.
"No .... No Andae, there's no need to bother the Doctor. I'm sure he's got enough to be getting on with if my 'vision' is anything to go by. I'll be fine now, What's our status ?"
Blakus knew that the so called 'vision' had effected his Commander more than he was letting on, but decided to give him the benefit. He updated the Captain on the Raven's status, then said he was going to return to the Bridge before going off-shift. He informed Torek that Mister Jamison had the Bridge and all was well. Carl nodded, thanking his Exec' silently for his concern, then stood to look out at the stars as the door closed behind Blakus ..........

The Captain's anguish was terrible to see, frightening, upsetting even. Blakus wasn't sure what to say at first, he felt as if his Commanding officer, his new Commanding officer, had delivered a sucker punch to his confidence. Is this how the crew had really been affected? Looking around the ready room, Blakus tried to build up a line of words to form into an actual sentence, anything to reassure the suddenly stricken Captain of the Raven.
"Capt ... Carl," he called him by his first name for the first time, just as he had recently done with Commander Jamison. "It wasn't real. We all felt, saw, experienced, 'something' ... Earth, Chloe, everyone, is still there, you have to believe that. Do you want me to get the Doctor up here, he could give you something ?"
Carl shook his head, shaking and wiping away the tears, trying to regain some form of composure in front of his second in command. This had really hit home, more so than Blakus's 'vision' had... "... I'll be fine now, What's our status ?" Carl was saying.
Seeing that the Captain had recovered somewhat, Blakus looked back at him, "The ship has been repaired of most of its major damage, just a few holes in the hull still to fix.. and all the minor problems."
Torek nodded, finding something to focus his attention on perhaps, deflecting attention away from the fact that he was still suffering from his troubles. "I'll return to the bridge for now sir?" Blakus asked, "I'm almost off my shift but I would like to check back there." Torek nodded slowly. Andae made his way to the door, and just before the sensor registered his approach and slid the door open, he turned back, he wanted to say something that he felt was very important, but what came out of his mouth was completely different to what he had planned. "Commander Jamison is a capable bridge officer Captain, he has the bridge he's doing a fine job." Carl acknowledged and Blakus finally left him in peace.
"Nothing amiss, Commander?" Blakus asked, appearing to the bridge from the Captain's ready room. Jamison shook his head and moved to stand from the command chair. "No need to get up Will, I shall turn the bridge over to you while the Captain is still in his ready room, and shall retire to my quarters for now."
Jamison nodded and flickered a smile as he lowered himself back into the Centre Chair.

Entering his quarters for the first time in an age, Blakus's first thought was of how much more action they would see on this 'mission'. With the rift device, or what they hoped was the rift device, destroyed, hopefully not much. "Two months though.." he said aloud as he took off his uniform jacket and chucked it in the recycler. The black and grey uniform had been sweat-soaked, covered in dirt from the planet that was apparently Dorvan V, and who knew what manner of chemicals from the rift ship.
He collapsed on his near-unused bed, slept in only once by the Italian born officer since he started his occupancy of these quarters. There had to be a way of speeding up that journey to Dua Ceti, surely. Staring up at the blank grey ceiling, he strained his mind, but nothing would come forth. Andae would wilt on this trip, that he knew, and all he had to muse was the lasting affect that the last journey through the rift would have on the crew. How long would it take them to recover, and why was he himself left feeling strangely empty, devoid of feeling as pertained to said trip? The Raven's Captain had seen a vision of a burning Earth, consumed by a fire instigated by an unknown force that may well have been the figment of the Captain's imagination. On the other hand, the Raven's first officer had seen nothing of the sort. A field of white was what he had saw. Full of light, near-pure light of the full visible electromagnetic spectrum. Why? What was that supposed to mean? Effectively, he had seen nothing, or maybe, he thought, he had seen everything. Nothing would be black, would it not?
Blakus dismissed the whole argument as pointless and trivial; had he not imagined it all, like the rest of the crew had? Hallucinogenic effects were not uncommon in unknown phenomena, any sort of radiation could affect any kind of experience. Still though.. Then he got an idea, a worthy test perhaps, but it may prove fruitful. Blakus got himself a new commbadge and used it to call on Sickbay.
=/\= Doctor Traks, this is Commander Blakus. Tell me, is Lieutenant Moore well enough for a visit? =/\=
