Three years ago, Matthew Reynolds would have cringed at the thought of attending a formal event aboard the Jefferson. The fact that he was enjoying himself took him by complete surprise. This new feeling was not shared by the entire senior staff most of all Megan Garrett, the all secretive first officer. Even though there were still some doubts in Matt's mind about Megan, he knew that he could trust her with his life and that of his crew.
"It worries me to see you pondering in deep thought this early in the day," Kristin said as she took Matt's hand into her own. Normally this was not allowed, but for the wedding they were going to make an exception," and don't get smart with me either because I know that its 1900 hours but we both know you don't go to sleep until 0300 hours at the earliest."
"It's the only time that I can stop and think about the good things that are going on in my life," Matt said as in between a quick kiss," being captain isn't all that its cracked up to be. You've seen all those reports on my desk."
"Speaking of the transporters need a major overhaul again," Kristin said rather quickly, so quickly that Matt couldn't help but notice.
"You cannot keep upgrading those transporters everytime your team creates a better system," Matt said with a slight smirk," I let you last time thinking that we wouldn't have to do it again for maybe another year."
"Come on, please? Our projections say that we have improved our range by another twenty five thousand kilometers," Kristin said beaming with pride. She had once told her that when she began her career in Starfleet she had been ashamed of being a transporter specialist but she soon realised that the job was as important as any other," I... I mean we don't want another crew and ship to do these test."
"Well, you'll hae to talk to Megan and convince her," Matt said glad that he had standard operating procedure to fall back on in this situation," last time was your birthday present, but unless its our anniversary, which I know it is not, you are out of luck."
"I knew I shouldn't have done that," Kristin said under her breath before she turned her attention to Caleb, who had been playing around with some of the children on board," did you like the wedding?"
"No, there are to many kissing at weddings," Caleb said as his eyes surveryed the entire reception hall," please don't do that with dad. It's gross!"
"You won't be saying that in seven years," Matt said as he gave Kristin a playful kiss.
"Dad! That is so gross!" Caleb said before spotting the kids who apparently were chasing him," sorry got to go!."
"Caleb, I told you no playing tag when there are more than five people around!" Matt shouted after his son.
"Seven years? You told me that you started dating at fifteen," Kristin said as she gave Matt a little jab.
"I did, but my parents are a lot more trusting than I am of kids," Matt said remembering all the trouble he got into at that age," plus I prefer him to stay a kid as long as possible."
"You are a big softie," Kristin said finally spotting the newly married couple alone for a few seconds," come on, they aren't surrounded by a horde of people right now."
"I hope the reception is to your liking? They didn't have that much time to get things prepared, we really didn't give them a lot of time," Matt said as he gave both men a hug," I also hope you like the wedding gift that we got you."

Nathan glided over the dancefloor with his sister, relishing to share at least this much with her, especially since he didn't get to see her that often. "Dad is here too, somewhere," he told her, almost conspiratorily, "probably minding Freddy and a few other children. It'd be just like him to do that especially after what happened recently. He feels so guilty." Quietly, he gave her the outline of the most recent events. "You have another niece," he told her proudly.
Sonak could see the pride in her other brother's eyes, next to his current elation at being married again. She smiled, a smile only reserved for family. "And naturally you will show her to me after all this is done? You too have another niece, though she is almost two years old now, but you finally get to meet her." She patted her brother's arm as the music stopped, so the musicians could take a brief break. "I'm proud of you, and very happy for you."
Nathan grinned, as Jayden joined him again. At that moment, Megan approached, looking none too comfortable, while offering her own congratulations. Both men smiled, but refrained from initiating a hug. "Sonak, this is Megan, she's the ship's first officer," Nathan introduced, leaving out their ranks. "Megan, my sister Sonak. I've told you about her."
Sonak looked her over, knowing instantly that there was more to this woman than she let on. She inclined her head politely. "Please excuse me," she told the woman, "I shall mingle with other guests."
Nathan shrugged. "Not much of a party fan either, that one," he confided. He gazed past Megan, at Tamara. "Giving you a hard time? You should slip out while you still can," he suggested, laughing merrily.
They turned as Matt and Kristin approached. "It was as much of a party as I could expect," Nathan answered, "it was well done and suited our needs perfectly. And, this is exactly what the crew needs, and what you needed. Are you both having a good time?" He ignored the present question, as neither man had had time to even look at any yet. They would unwrap them later, in the privacy of their home.
Nathan's smile brightened as the one person he expected to at least show up, finally approached. "J'Varr!" he cried out, venturing into a very dangerous area when he hugged the man-sized cat tightly. "You have to come visit soon, I'm sure Angel would want to see you again." Not that a baby could make any such wish known, but since the Caitian was the child's godfather, Nathan did expect him to at least devote some of his time to her. "Are you enjoying the party?"

He was almost finished with the upgrades and repairs to the helm, since he had time with everybody at the party he was reprogramming the lay out to suite him. If somebody else tryed to use his lay out they would be a little lost. He wasn't concerned because the console automaticly reset it self to the standard layout when he logged off. He was making the changes because it would be easyier on him and he had the time. Which was a little odd since he had been pretty busy when he first came aboard.
He was also happy he was missing the party as well, he didn't know any of the crew that well. To him they were still strangers people he didn't know all that well, the crew off the scavenger was a differnt story they were almost family to him. Still the scavenger was gone and this was his new home he would have to make the best of it and give it some time. Maybe things would change and the Jefferson would become a home to him.
Not to mention he really didn't to many people would notice that he wasn't at the party. He hadn't really been introduced to anybody accept a few key officer's of the last mission. Then there was also still the issues with Commander Garret. They were working on building some kind of trust but it was still to early to tell. Who knew what the future held while people worked on time machines to travel back in forth in time. He had long since learned that the future was not set. Things change all the time and that was the problem with trying to see into the future. His people could focus and try but had long since learned the future was to hard to predict because it was constantly changing what might be true one moment could not be the next.
His thoughts drifted back to the task at hand and figured the party would be over soon.

"Sonak, this is Megan, she's the ship's first officer, Megan, my sister Sonak. I've told you about her,” Nathan introduced the officers conspicuously omitting their ranks.
In spite of the circumstances, introduction, and the exclusion of rank, Megan knew who the woman was, and with the rank of Admiral, felt Sonak certainly deserving of the respect due her position. Nodding politely, Commander Garrett tried to honor Nathan’s unspoken desire for no rank and acknowledged her with a brief ‘Ma’am.’
Returning the polite acknowledgment, the Admiral was the picture of calm. "Please excuse me, I shall mingle with other guests,” she stated solemnly, turning to do so.
"Not much of a party fan either, that one," Nathan commented with a shrug, making Megan feel a bit bad that her discomfort was so obvious, but he quickly changed the subject, gazing past her towards Tamara. "Giving you a hard time? You should slip out while you still can," the doctor suggested, and she quite agreed with him.
About to make a wry comment or some sort of joke, instead she saw the Captain approaching from behind Nathan, indicated in Matt’s direction, and when the doctor predictably turned to see who was coming, Megan slipped away into the crowd to head for the exit, her congratulations offered and the mission now accomplished.
~
Laughing breathlessly and sauntering back over the bar, Marina collapsed into her chair and merely waved at the bartender to send her another Mojito. After a slightly awkward dance with Jayden, the security officer had received plenty of requests for dances, and agreed to every one. Her mindset had changed somewhat, and now she was in party mode and determined to enjoy herself. If that meant dancing with every guy who asked and enjoying plenty of drinks, that’s what she would do. She’d see where the evening took her, and if Teyno was there somewhere and he happened to see her having a good time without him all the better, but that was no longer the primary goal. This was a party after all…and she was going to enjoy it.

Matthew Reynolds, a Starfleet brat, had never been scared of rank but the moment he was told that his direct superior was going to be on the Jefferson for Nathan's wedding. Rear Admiral Reckus was a well known throughtout the fleet and admired by almost all that knew her. A person that hated the Vulcan Admiral was Matt's close personal friend, Paikea Apirana, her Chief Tactical and Security officer.
"I wonder what she did to [word deleted] him off?" Matt thought far away from the Admiral so that she could not hear him or pick up on any of his other thoughts.
"Stop being a wimp, Matt!" Kristin said loudly enough that the people around them smiled knowingly," I've seen you talk to the Section Admiral like he was a friend. She's only a Rear Admiral, plus you speak Vulcan fluently. You should be able to talk about something."
"Yeah, I know," Matt said as he fixed himself up and approached the Alpha Squad Commander," Admiral, I hope my crew has treated you with the upmost respect on your visit?"
"They certainly have. Please this is a social occasion, let us forego on the ranks. I am here for my brother, not to upset the social structure of your vessel."
"I'm glad to hear you have brought those pirates to justice," Matt said trying not to show his aprehension," congratulations on your promotion as well, its well deserved."
"Thank you. The pirates did not give us too much trouble, they went fairly quietly and another taskforce has taken over from is to keep Mayem safe. My new chief engineer has a good time repairing the damage done, but he is quite skilled."
"Admiral, sorry to ask, but do you know what our next mission is going to be?" Matt asked with a bit of bitterness. His request had fallen on dead ears and he could only think the worse. Had Admiral Lin finally lost faith in Matt's ability to command? Did Admiral Reckus even like Matt? The none answers and silence were driving him mad," all I know is that the Romulan ship is headed towards Assailant."
Sonak sensed the bitterness in the younger man, but had no satisfying answer for him. "I regret that I have no information beyond you already know. Not that I do not wish to share it, but because I know no more than you do." She paused at the mention of a Romulan vessel. "Govan Echal, perchance?" she queried, bitterness now in her own voice. "I will take my ship before he arrives, I prefer not to meet with him again. He nearly killed my other brother." Her eyes flashed dangerously. "Do not inform Nathan of this, he does not know."
"Once again, I'm sorry for bringing work into this joyous event," Matt said pilotely," your brother is a great asset to this vessel and brings joy to all of our lives."
"That is good to hear. Nathan is a passionate man, and very passionate about what he does. Not to mention very protective about the ones he loves." She added the last part with a hint of mock-chagrin. "You are fortunate to have him captain. Then again, all doctors are quite passionate about their professions, trust me."
Feeling that his conversation with Admiral Reckus went smoothly, Matt was able to breathe again. He didn't intend to make the conversation about work, but it was about time he was allowed some basic information. It was also at this time, that Matt was able to observe his crew for the first time today. The wedding had been Nathan and Jayden's big day, but everyone needed this.
"I so need a shrink," Matt said to no one in particular and went about his business and enjoyed the party.

== Next Morning ==
Nathan woke when his son bounced onto the bed, carrying a platter with two sandwiches. He mumbled something under his breath, but Freddy was quite persistent. "Dad, wake up, I brought you breakfast!"
"Not now," the doctor murmured, trying to turn over, but his path was blocked. On one side say Freddy, on the other side, lay his new husband, still fast asleep. Groaning, Nathan sat up and took the plate. "Why don't you wake Jayden?" he suggested, smiling slyly.
"Can I?" The boy cast him a curious look, echoing his father's smile. Nathan nodded, at which point the boy hopped over, shaking the sleeping man. "Wake up, wake up!" he called.
Jayden turned over, opening one eye to peer up at the person who intruded so rudely on his slumber. He grinned and ruffled the boy's hair. "Good morning to you too little one."
"I'm not little, I'm -"
"Almost six, I know." Jayden laughed as he wrapped his arm around his mate's waist, leaning over to the plate. "Smells good. Got any coffee too?" He smiled. "Did you have a good time last night?"
"Oh yes, quite a ceremony and so many people too. Too bad Dad and Sonak had to leave so soon, but the Vesuvius was called on a mission and she actually didn't really have the time to stay. Dad had business on the starbase, before he'd return home. Mom's probably getting a little lonely at home, she's too fragile to travel. We'll go to Earth on next shoreleave, or we could ask Matt if he can take the ship to Earth at some point.
"Too bad," Jayden agreed, "I liked your sister, she was very...accepting of me. Odd, to receive such openness from a Vulcan."
"That's my sister," Nathan smiled. "Don't move, I'll be right back. Freddy, sit still." Minutes later, he returned with Angelique in one arm, and two mugs of steaming coffee and a bottle with baby formula in the other hand. Jayden reached out for the baby and the bottle, but got the two mugs instead. "Baby first, then daddy," Nathan chuckled, settling the infant on his arm. "Daddies, I mean. And then we're going to spend the day right here at home. No excitement, just family. Except, we do have to go thank Matt later."
"We should do that first, and then have him know we can only be disturbed for emergencies? After all, aren't we supposed to be honeymooning?"
Nathan nodded. "We'll go visit after lunch, I want some time for ourselves first. We barely get any time together at all, what with you leading your company and me working in sickbay."
"Lunch it is." He tapped the combadge lying on the cabinet next to the bed. "Captain, this is Jayden Mitchell. Could Nathan and I please meet with you at lunch? It's important. Thank you."

Cyle had spent as little time as possible at the ceremony, leaving as soon as he thought he wouldnt be noticed. Making his way to the bridge, he spotted another officer, the navigations officer judging by the fact he sat at the helm and was customizing it. Unsure weither or not he had actually met this man, Cyle just stood in front of the turbo lift, looking around the bridge. Not really one to strike up a conversation, Cyle looked down at commander, before turning to leave again.

He heard the turbo lift open but no one came out he turned from his station to see a marine officer he hadn't seen before. He noticed the gold oak leaf and assumed he was the marien senior officer. He was very quite just looking and not saying a word, well might as well say hello
" Hello Major I'm Commander Pride the ships new pilot, I dont beleive we have been introduced."
" I came aboard during our last mission, I ended up on away mission so I really haven't been aboard that long."
He waited for a response to gage Major, he didn't want to push to hard trying to get to know people. He figured in time he would get a chance to meet everybody.

Cyle looked over at the Navigations officer, and before answering he thought to himself for a moment, 'Aw, how cute, he's trying to be friends' Cyle nodded his head in a form of response, then added in a grunt, "Johnson, pleasure" not at all pleasureable. Trying to find a reason to leave, Cyle searched his mind, and with a sigh found nothing.

Looking at the Marine officer named Johnso he could tell by body language he was not comfortable around him. It almost seemed like he couldn't be bothered with him at some point sombody might find this rude. Since he himself didn't know any better he let it go and assumed it was a normal interaction.
" Mr. Johnson you are man of few words something I find a little strange. Since I haveing nothing to compare it to I will assume its a normal human interaction. I do not wish to keep you from any duties as it seems you have no desire to remain her on the bridge or converse with me. I was only trying to make small talk a skill that appears needs more work" <Tag jonhnson.
Looking back down at his station he decided to ask his next question before the Marine left" Mr. Johnson one more question if you will indulge me. I was just wondering our last mission when the childern were taken. Any idea's on how the enemy knew how and when to grab them. I'm in no way impling you are at fault or failed in your duties. Its Quite simple the oppsite in fact. Any body and I mean anybody can be fooled, beaten or tricked. So with that being said how would you have planned that to accomplish that if it was your goal."

Matthew Reynolds was not a heavy drinker but for the first time since becoming captain of the USS Jefferson, Matthew found himself drunk. Everyone left at the reception was respectful enough to avert thier eyes.
"Captain, I think you have had enough to drink," Commander Hayes said as he quietly stopped Matt from taking another drink," it would be prudent for you to call it a night sir."
"Greg, I think you are right," Matt said as he stumbled a few steps forward before being caught by the commander," I used to be able to hold my liquor."
"Yes sir, I'll help you to your quarters," Hayes said trying hard to make thier departure unnoticeable," I'll have a pot of coffee waiting for you when you wake up sir. I've already informed Kristin that Caleb is going to be spending the night with my son."
"Since when are you this responsible Greg? I remember that you used to party more than me," Matt said between slurs.
"It's because I partied myself out sir," Commander Hayes replied," I did it for so long that there is little need for me to do it."
Matt partically understood what his beta shift leader was saying to him, but did not ask anyother questions. He was feeling ill and just wanted to sleep.
"Alright, sir we have arrived," Greg said as he put Matt on the bed," the computer will wake you up around 0600 hours. Sleep well sir."
"See you later, Greg," Matt said and once he was sure that he was alone," computer change wake up call for 0900 hours."
"Captain, this is Jayden Mitchell. Could Nathan and I please meet with you at lunch? It's important. Thank you."
At first, Matt thought that he was only hearing things, but once he realized that Jayden was talking to him, Matt woke up and answered that he would meet them.

Cyle was a little taken aback by what the commander in front of him was asking, unsure how to respond, he simply thought for a few moments before replying."At that moment in time, there was a lot of things going on, it would have been rather easy to trasnport oneself aboard without being noticed right away, and leave just as fast. I'm not sure i would have done anything different, if that was my only entention, to capture the children." Cyle waited until he thought the commander was finished with him, before leaving the calming silence of the empty bridge.

Looking back up at the major " Thank you Major you have been most informative, I hope I did not cause any offense or implie anything. It was not my intention I was just trying to confirm that a large part of what happened was luck and not just skill. I to was fooled I missed the obivious trail that was left and followed the hidden. Sometimes its best to ask people more skilled in these matters then to guess"
Looking back down at his station he too was ready to get going the repairs were complete. He had the itch to get moving and wondered if any of the crew felt the need to get the Jefferson out there looking for things to explore.
