OOC: Welcome to the new mission everyone Sorry It's taken me a while to get this together. Crystal finally made it back to her quarters. There she found her cousin sprawled on her sofa and her pile of science papers scattered across the floor. She was about to start yelling at Jedda, she was tired and stressed and knew she had loads of work to do, but the blinking message light on her desk caught her attention and let Jedda off the hook. She sighed dumping her dress uniform jack over a chair and settling at the desk. There were two high priority messages waiting for her. First was a short message from Starfleet Medical saying that Commodore Smith was on mandatory medical leave and she was to continue to run the ship until such time as he felt able to return to full duty. The second message, even more concerning in light of the first was that the Olympia was 'requested and required' to report at once to the Algeran Sector where she was to be involved in some attempted peace talks. Although given the races involved Crystal did not hold out too much hope. =/\=This is Crystal Rose to all Olympia crew. We are leaving the Sol System in two hours, everyone is to be back on board in 90 minutes. Department heads please send your readiness reports to me before we leave orbit. Senior Staff please report to the briefing room in two hours for your mission briefing.=/\= Crystal closed the comm link and then looked at Jedda, "that means you have 90 minutes to get off the ship". Her expression took the sting out of the words. She tapped more buttons on her desk she had loads to do but she wasn't going to abandon her cousin. "I was going to suggest that you stay with Paul Mattise, you remember him?" Jedda nodded. "I've sent him a message, hopefully he'll get back to me soon. Don't worry, if the worst happens you'll just have to come with us although if that happens I make no promises about getting you back in time to start the academy." Jedda gave a half smile. "I'm sure it'll work out."

Jack sat in his office in a very foul mood, and for no explainable reason. He read the PADDs that had piled up on his office desk. After going through five of them, he brought his hands to his eyes and held them there for a few seconds. He was not tired but he did have a slight headache he attributed that to the fact he was stressed out and in a foul mood.
Jumping up from his chair, he walked out to the main sickbay scowling at the nurses and Dr. Janet Reilly indicating to them he was in no mood to engage in small talk or be asked any unimportant questions.
Jack walked straight over to the medical supplies and grabbed a hypospray with a mild pain reliever, injecting his arm the relief from the headache was instant, Jack let out a small sigh of relief and wished his foul mood were as easy to dispense with.
Jack was about to walk straight back in his office when the comm. Channel came to life with the voice of Commander Rose.
=/\=This is Crystal Rose to all Olympia crew. We are leaving the Sol System in two hours; everyone is to be back on board in 90 minutes. Department heads please send your readiness reports to me before we leave orbit. Senior Staff please report to the briefing room in two hours for your mission briefing.=/\=
Jack’s shoulders slumped and his head dropped slightly the news that he could not relax was almost enough to send him over the edge in his foul mood.
He spun on his heels, looked at Lieutenant Commander Janet Reilly, and sighed before saying.
“Check medical supplies, I will make sure our Staff gets back on time.”
Janet only nodded sensing Jack’s mood, she was not about to whine about the boring nature of her assignment.
The medical Staff began making their way back some eager to ship off and get to a mission and others upset that shore leave was over, both attitudes annoyed Jack to no end for no real reason.
After two hours, Jack held the PADD that held the report for Commander Rose stating that all staff was accounted for and the ship was stocked with enough medical supplies.
Jack made his way off to the briefing room practically stomping the whole way there grunting at the crew who said hello to him.
Jack entered the Briefing room with a scowl on his face and sat down, as he did he slid the PADD to Commander Rose who was the only other person in the room at the time. He just sat there with his arms crossed and scowl stuck on his face
After a few seconds of silence, Jack nodded to Commander Rose and said.
“How are you Commander?”

Crystal read and reread the information Starfleet Command had sent, unsurprisingly it didn't change. Things were all arranged for Jedda to go Mars and spend the last couple of days before term started with Paul so that was one thing done on her ever increasing To Do list. Crystal changed into a normal duty uniform and headed for the bridge. She arrived with a few minutes to spare before her self imposed deadline expired. She gave the helmsman his orders and heading before turning the bridge over to the duty ops officer. She headed for the briefing room and was surprised to find it empty. Then again she had set everyone a very tight deadline. She settled nervously at the head of the table, she didn't like speaking to a group and she doubted she would find this mission briefing easier to give than the one the Commodore had dropped on her a while back.
Crystal stared at her PADD trying to gather her somewhat scattered thoughts. The door of the room hissed open and Doctor Crane walked in, he did not seem happy. He slid a PADD across the table to her, Crystal caught it and scanned through the contents.
“How are you Commander?” He asked
Crystal gave what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "Not too bad, up to my eyes in paperwork but then I imagine that everyone is. How about you?"

David followed Commander Rose out of the room. He wasn't fond of funeral's, having attended several of his families burials.
"You anything planned Commander ?" he asked the Exec'
"No ... And call me Crystal OK ... As you know I have a guest so I'll be making sure she's keeping out of trouble ... You ?"
"Nothing." Tan said, almost disappointed that Crystal hadn't mentioned Jedda by name, he wondered briefly if she didn't want the two of them chatting, "There's a bit of a get-together, wake, kind of thing for Arya. I may show my face there for a while."
After saying 'bye' both Officers went their own way ..
~~~~~~~~~~
Some time later David was back in his quarters. The wake gone well, with many Officers, civilians, and friends talking about Steven's wife. But Tan needed to rest, so making his excuses, he headed for his quarters. but the Ships' Comm system burst to life while he was on his way there ..
=^= This is Crystal Rose to all Olympia crew .. We are leaving the Sol System in two hours everyone is to be back on board in 90 minutes. Department heads please send your readiness reports to me before we leave orbit .. Senior Staff please report to the briefing room in two hours for your mission briefing =^=
There wasn't many people in the corridor, but the ones that were there stopped in their tracks as the Exec' give her announcement, then all moved as one to their respective area's. Tan headed for his quarters to get out of his dress uniform, and less than ten minutes later, he was stepping onto the Olympia's Bridge ..
Most departments had already sent their reports to him for confirmation. Scanning them briefly, but finding nothing to concern them in regards to departure, he forwarded them to the Exec' as requested.
Science had been undergoing several upgrades. Heubners report stated the departments' readiness, but he decided to contact Joel for his own piece of mind ... Once he was satisfied, he made sure his duty Ops Officer was OK, then headed for the briefing room.
" ...... to my eyes in paperwork but then I imagine that everyone is. How about you ?"
David nodded to Crystal and Jack as she finished talking, he took his seat and waited, not wanting to interrupt the Doctor ..........
"Not too bad, up to my eyes in paperwork but then I imagine that everyone is. How about you?"
Jack leaned back in his chair, he tried to think about what had him in a foul mood but honestly, he could not say.
“Just fine… never been better.”
Jack was not normally one for bold face lying but it was easier to say he was fine than say he was not fine but didn’t know why.
Jack turned his head as he heard the door open, it was David Tan who didn’t say anything as he entered and took his seat.
Jack sat silent for a moment before standing up.
“Excuse me for a moment.”
Jack walked out of the briefing room.
He returned a few moments later with a large glass of cold water, while the pain reliever he had given himself had taken the edge off the headache he knew drinking plenty of fluids would make it even better.
Jack took his seat again, he took a sip of the ice cold water and let out a sigh. He was now regreting his choice of doing paperwork during shoreleave rather than do something fun, but he also knew if he had not of done it then he would have had to of done it now along with the new paperwork he had to do now.
Jack turned to Rose and said.
“I hear you have a family member on board… someone mentioned she was soon to be attending the academy.. does she know what she wants to do?”
Jack only asked to stop himself thinking about his headache, and the work left to do in sickbay that just seemed to keep coming no matter how much he did there was still more to do.
David looked at the chronometer above the door, he thought maybe he'd arrived early as the majority of the Senior Staff had still to arrive, but no, the briefing should have begun almost five minutes ago.
'Maybe she is giving people a little lee-way while the Captain is indisposed' Tan thought, dismissing the idea instantly.
"...... have a family member on board. Someone mentioned she was soon to be attending the academy. Does she know what she wants to do ?"
Tan's ears picked up at the mention of Crystal's cousin. He was glad Jedda was still aboard, but didn't want to push this to the Exec' ... After all, it was possible that Jedda didn't even like him and was just being 'polite' with him, it was totally possible.
"She isn't too sure at the moment ...." Crystal said, noticing Tan taking an interest in the conversation, ".... Did she mention any preferences to you David ?"
"Erm ... No ..." Tan said, caught off-guard for a second, "But I'm sure she will pick an area suited to her, talents." he finished, wondering if either Officer noticed his apparent babbling.
Crystal seemed to be getting some perverse satisfaction from watching the Second Officer struggle, while the comments passed over Crane's head completely, not having been at the said party.
"The briefing 'was' set for sixteen thirty hours wasn't it ?" David asked, by way of a topic switch.
Crystal grinned as she too glanced at the chronometer then tapped her Comm badge.
=^= Rose to Bridge .. Cal all department heads to the briefing room =^= she said, closing the Comm without waiting for a reply. But a few seconds later a ship-wide Comm informed all Senior Staff that they were required at the briefing.
Tan glanced at the PADD in front of him, but didn't bother to activate it as people began to file into the room ..........
After Arya's funeral, Steve had made a very short journey back to Earth to visit his mother. She wasn't able to attend the funeral as she was busy with the restaurant, so Steve wanted to check in with her personally before he returned back to the ship. In a way it was a good thing that she wasn't able to attend the service, as it had only been a couple of years since her husband, Steve's father, had died of a sudden heart attack. The recent service would have brought back the memories, and Steve wouldn't have wanted that to happen.
Steve said his goodbye, and headed back to the Olympia. Starfleet had granted him compassionate leave for an unspecified time. He was given authority to go back to duty whenever he felt that he was up to it.
For the next few days, Steve spent all his time in his quarters. The running of the ship had been left to his XO, Crystal. The first few days were tough, trying to cope without Arya, but he couldn't just sit around feeling sorry for himself, Arya would not have wanted that. As a Starfleet officer and a Commodore at that, Steve had a duty to fulfil and he couldn't do that hiding away from everything.
Two more days passed, and Steve felt that he was ready to get back into the swing of things. He had spent a fair amount of time with Renora, and that made him happy. She was growing up so fast, and with him being the Commanding Officer, he didn't get to spend much time with her. That was something he was going to have to work on changing.
Just as Steve put Renora back to sleep, the shipwide com channel opened: =/\= This is Crystal Rose to all Olympia crew. We are leaving the Sol System in two hours, everyone is to be back on board in 90 minutes. Department heads please send your readiness reports to me before we leave orbit. Senior Staff please report to the briefing room in two hours for your mission briefing. =/\=
"Well, now's as good a time as any for us to be sent out." Steve said to himxelf.
Steve had no intention of just taking over command of the ship at the snap of his fingers, but he did want to be at the briefing. Laying back down on his bed, he closed his eyes and waited for a while....just over a hour, to be a bit more precise. Steve then slowly got up from his bed, put on a fresh duty unform and made sure he had the correct number or pips on his collar.
The mission briefing was just about to start, so Steve checked himself over, and then left his quarters for the short journey to the briefing room. Most of the crew that he walked past just stopped whatever they were doing and looked at him, which made him a little uneasy.
Upon entering the briefing room, Steve was surprised to see that only Crystal, Jack and David were present. If he was late himself, then where was everyone else? Crystal looked towards Steve as he made his way into the room.
"Oh, don't mind me. This is your show. Carry on as if I'm not even here." He said, and made his way to stand in he corner of the room and leant up against the wall.
“I hear you have a family member on board… someone mentioned she was soon to be attending the academy.. does she know what she wants to do?” Jack asked.
Crystal gave another wry grin. "Jedda's my cousin, she wants to be a scientist. A family of artists and there now two of us." She shrugged. "She had more a bent towards biology and the life sciences so I have no idea where she'll end up." There was a few moments of silence as the conversation came to rest.
Crystal looked around the nearly empty briefing room, she had no idea where everyone else was she was sure V'Sel at least should be here, the Vulcan scientist was always on time.
The door hissed open again. Crystal looked up she was surprised when the Commodore Smith entered. He was in uniform so it seemed he had been cleared for duty.
"Oh, don't mind me. This is your show. Carry on as if I'm not even here." He said.Crystal nodded although she didn't think it was possible. She could feel his eyes on her as she considered the data on the PADDs in front on her.
"As you wish, sir." She swallowed silently. "It's good to have you here." She then glanced around the room "It looks like we're going to be a bit light on senior staff this mission. If no one knows where anyone else is I guess I shall start."
Chris just arrived at the Olympia hours before and was sleeping in his room. Just as he was passing into comatose Commander Crystal's voice came in,
=/\= This is Crystal Rose to all Olympia crew. We are leaving the Sol System in two hours, everyone is to be back on board in 90 minutes. Department heads please send your readiness reports to me before we leave orbit. Senior Staff please report to the briefing room in two hours for your mission briefing. =/\=
Chris got out of bed and walked over to the shower, he got undressed out of his shirt and shorts. He got in and washed up, he stepped out of the shower and dryed off and put the towel around his waist. He walked out of the bathroom and into his main bedroom. He grabbed his undershirt and underwear and put them on. He then grabbed his new working uniform and put it on. He then walked out into the hallway and walked to the elevator and took it up to the briefing room. As he was in the elevator he turned around and looked at the map on the wall. The door opened behind him and Chris walked out. He then looked to his right and saw the Commodore walk into the briefing room. Chris walked that way and walked into the room. Right before the Commander started Chris walked in and felt all eyes be directed at him.
"Lieutenant JG Chris Pemberton reporting in for Cheif Navigation officer sir."
Just as Crystal was about to begin her briefing the door hissed open once more and a tall blonde young man in a red uniform entered. For a second Crystal was aware that she was the shortest person in the room by quite some way.
"Lieutenant JG Chris Pemberton reporting in for Chief Navigation officer sir."
Crystal's eyes flicked to the Commodore for a second but he was doing very well at pretending he wasn't here. She smiled.
"Good to have you aboard Lieutenant Pemberton. Please take a seat I was just about to give everyone a briefing about our latest mission." She quickly introduced everyone around the table and waited while he settled into an empty seat.
As if on cue, one of the PADDs on the table in front of her bleeped, she glanced at it in irritation somewhat unsurprised to see that it was the assignment details for Lieutenant Pemberton. Starfleet Command were getting worse at sending this stuff through.
Crystal re-gathered her scattered thoughts and finally started the briefing
"We are on our way to Galfar II. A world that has been fighting a fairly quiet civil war for the best part of the last decade. The fight has been mostly political but there have been sporadic outbreaks of fairly serious violence more so in the last few months." She pausing a second.
"The two factions, the Expansionists and the Isolationists have finally agreed to talk peacefully to each other. Of course, neither side condones the violence and each blames a small non approved group on each side." Crystal wondered if the doubt she felt at these words was evident in her voice. "We've been asked to attend as neutral observers and to investigate any further violence"
She looked round the room slowly. "Does anyone have any questions?"
"Right. It seems that everyone will be heading down to Galfar II to observe at least part of the proceedings. Hopefully this will avoid anyone getting too bored."
Jack rolled his eyes and fought the compulsion to sigh, another civil war the federation had to help put an end too. Nothing Jack hated more than seeing people from the same world fight each other over things that could be solved with discussion.
He fought the compulsion to start smacking his head against the table until he passed out, which would have been much more preferable to him rather than listen to another mind numbingly simple problem that some unenlightened race couldn’t solve without violence.
He did however speak up to ask a question that was relevant.
He looked to Commander Rose and asked.
“What level of technology do they posses? And do they require medical assistance of any kind?”
Jacks mood had only gotten worse since he sat down in the briefing room, he couldn’t explain to himself why but he was feeling pensive and increasingly agitated. His headache had returned which didn’t help matters. He almost felt sorry for the next person to get on his nerves.. which he knew was likely to be Janet Reilly once he got back to sickbay.
Steve stayed perfectly still throughout the entire briefing. His gaze was focused on the centre of the room. Just by being here he was keeping his mind off Arya and her recent memorial service. Only in time was it going to get any better, so he was thankful to be able to get the opporunity to take his mind off it now. When alone in his quarters he can let his guard down....but not in front of the crew. He still has his image and reputation to uphold.
Commander Rose finished the relaying the brief that had been sent by Starfleet and asked the rest of the staff if there were any questions.
'So...yet another brushfire to settle. I wonder if anyone else remembers when we were explorers?' He thought to himself with a smirk.
Steve made a mental note to go over the briefing himself again once everyone had been dismissed, just to properly re-acquaint himself with everything.
While Crystal explained the Mission Chris wondered the exact warp engine specifications are here, he decided after this he is going to have to check the databases about it. He knew his pad was taking ever word down of what Crystal said so he can review it later, he learned to do this while he was on the Jefferson, if he missed anything during a briefing he can review it later on. Crystal asked for questions, and the Doctor answered.
“What level of technology do they posses? And do they require medical assistance of any kind?”
A valid question from the Doctor, especially since you would usually of seen that coming from a Security Officer. Chris wondered at the same time the same thing, if there technology was anywhere near advanced they would have trouble with this being a scouting mission. He sat waiting for Crystal to answer.
Doctor Crane was the first person off the mark with a question. “What level of technology do they posses? And do they require medical assistance of any kind?”Crystal relaxed a bit, technological questions she could cope with. "They achieved warp about fifty years ago, first contact was in 2346. They were considering joining the Federation but the current political situation has put that on hold. Generally their technology is fairly advanced but there has been some suggestion of them obtaining some of it from a third party." She paused considering the rest of the doctor's question. "I don't know about medical assistance. The information I have says that some of the attacks have come close to overloading their medical capabilities. They have been trying to get a cease-fire in place but ..." The rest of her sentence dissolved into a vague shrug. Crystal looked round the table once more. Tag: anyone else who wants to ask a question "Right. It seems that everyone will be heading down to Galfar II to observe at least part of the proceedings. Hopefully this will avoid anyone getting too bored. keep your eyes and ears open everyone. Meeting dismissed." The rest of the staff returned to their duties. Crystal stood on the bridge trying not to pace. She was very uneasy about this mission. She was worried that they were walking in to a powder keg. She was worried that there was more going on here than Starfleet knew and that an outside force was interfering with Galfar II. She walked over to the CNO, "Hi Lieutenant, my apologies for not introducing myself properly when we first met. My name is Crystal Rose. I'm sorry to have to put you to work straight away. I hope you are settling in all right." Tag: Lt Pemberton ****************************************************** The Olympia had just left Earth orbit, Jedda Rose had completely ignored her cousin's directions about leaving the Olympia. Not that she had anything against Crystal's friend Paul but there was no way she was going to leave a starship behind now she was on board. She didn't even mind if she was late for the Academy, besides she could probably get extra credit if she could convince someone to find her something to do aboard ship.... She looked at the comm panel hoping that Crystal had arranged it so she could sent intra-ship messages. "Umm, Hi Crystal, It's Jedda. I'm still on the Olympia. Didn't make it off in time. Sorry. I was hoping there was some way I could help out while I'm here." "Computer please transmit message to Commander Crystal Rose in two hours." "Hi David, it's Jedda. I'm still on the Olympia and would very much like to meet up with you." "Computer please send message to Commander David Tan." Jedda waiting hoping that David would reply. Tag: David
Doctor Jack Crane left as soon as the briefing ended and made his way back down to sickbay. His mood just as foul as when he left sickbay to go to the meeting.
He quickly walked into sickbay and started walking at a quick pace for his office hoping no one needed to speak to him.
“Doctor Crane?”
asked a voice from behind Jack stopped and turned his head slowly with a look of annoyance and anger plastered on his face.
“What is it… Quickly out with it I am a busy man.”
The young nurse swallowed hard nerves taking over she had not been on the ship long and had not yet had the chance to report in to her new boss.
“Sir… I… am Nurse Karen Black… I am new here.”
Jack sighed as he got a look at the young human nurse she must have only been in her early twenties, and normally Jack would have engaged her in light conversation to make her feel at home, however his headache and stress levels got the better of him.
“Fine Miss. Black you reported in.. now get to work or you will find your stay here very short.”
Jack spun on his heel and marched into his office, he stood in the middle of his office until the door closed behind him.
He let his shoulders slump and a heavy sigh escaped his lips, he slowly walked to behind his desk and let himself fall into his chair, picking up a small stack of PADDs he began reading them.
After only five minutes of reading the last person in the universe Jack wanted to see stormed into his office.
Janet Reilly stood in the doorway her arms crossed and a scowl on her face.
Jack didn’t even bother to look up knowing exactly who it was. “It is customary to wait for permission before entering my office.”
Janet let out an angry sigh before saying rather loudly.
“What is your problem?... You almost made that new nurse cry.”
Jack closed his eyes for a split second before he slammed the PADD he was reading down on the desk. He stood up and squared his shoulder, his face now red with anger.
“Just who do you think you are Commander?... do you see these?” he yelled as he pointed to his collar.
“More means I outrank you… and that means you don’t get to speak to me like that.”
Janet was about to say something but Jack was not going to let her get a word in.
He pointed angrily at the door.
“Your dismissed… and if so much as a hypospray is in the wrong place out there.. I am coming down on you like a ton of bricks.”
Janet knew fighting back was futile with Jack in his current mood so she just turned and left without saying a further word.
Jack stayed standing looking at his office door that had now closed; he looked down at his desk as he muttered to himself.
“Should have taken the job on earth.”
He sat back down and picked up the PADD again and continued to read.
Doctor Crane was the first person off the mark with a question.
"What level of technology do they posses, and do they require medical assistance of any kind ?"
David listened to the Exec' as she ran through the information she had. He glanced at the Captain, noticing that he seemed more interested in the stars than the briefing itself. But Tan knew he would be taking every word in, and would more than likely be double-checking the data at some point.
Crystal dismissed the briefing and Tan entered the Bridge.
Leaving the duty Operations Officer seated, he glanced over the departmental status log, pleased to see there was nothing pending but minor service items across the board.
He noticed a small green light flashing in one corner of the panel. This was his private Comm notification. Picking up his PADD he scrolled down to the message and opened it, smiling as he saw Jedda ..
"Hi David, it's Jedda. I'm still on the Olympia and would very much like to meet up with you."
'Jedda is still on-board ?' David thought, first puzzled, then happy to know she was still here. He moved to on side, affording him a little privacy, then tapped the reply tab ..
"Hey Jedda ... Wow. how come you are still on the Olympia. i thought Crystal said you were staying with a friend on Earth. Oh never mind, it's good to see you and yes, I'd love to meet up. I'll contact you as soon as we're underway and secure."
Closing the Comm he instructed the computer to send it before placing the PADD down. With a slight grin he hoped no-one noticed, he moved to each department console in turn making sure the Olympia was running at one hundred percent ..........
Commander Jack Crane had been left alone in his office undisturbed for about an hour, and he had calmed down but only a little. His headache was still running rampant in his head and he had gotten sick of reading the many medical reports and requests from his staff.
Jack had thought about returning to his quarters, but decided his location would make no difference he would feel just as awful and foul tempered there as he did in his office.
Nursing a hot cup of coffee in his hands he tried to release his stress and built up tension, however his attempt was in vain and after five minutes of deep breathing he still felt as restless as he did before.
The door beeped and Jack let out an anguished sigh as he looked up, and said loudly.
“Enter.”
Janet Reilly entered slowly half-expecting Commander Crane to fly into another fit of rage, but he did not he only seemed to sit there waiting for her to speak. Had she not been so used to reading his face for signs of emotion she would have thought him in a perfectly reasonable mood. However, her time working with Jack had taught her enough to recognize the face as saying ‘I don’t want to be doing this right now’
Janet cleared her throat before saying in a low voice that was calm and collected with very little hint of emotion one way or the other. “Commander.. may I take a seat?”
The sudden politeness coming from Janet Reilly had Jack suspicious already however his face and body language remained neutral as he nodded his head and looked toward the chair in front of his desk.
Janet sat down and looked to Jack and then his desk, she reached out and took the only personal item of Jack’s that he had put on his desk. His office was rather Spartan for her taste, it was impersonal very little indication that it was being used apart from the Padds now strewn across the desk and a few that had fallen on the floor. She looked to the picture frame she had picked up and noticed something in the picture she had not seen herself in person. It was Jack truly smiling he was younger in the picture and standing next to a woman with long brown hair who appeared equally happy.
She didn’t have to ask she new it was his deceased wife, she turned the picture and showed it to Jack.
Jack looked at the picture she held up fro a split second before looking back to Janet and saying in a rather cold and sarcastic tone. “Surprisingly Janet I have seen it before.”
Janet let out a small sigh before saying. “You once said that after she died was the most painful and confusing months of you life.”
Jack was not in the mood for games or walks down memory lane especially that particular neighbourhood of memory lane, not in his current mood. “If you have a point get to it fast.” He said losing the sarcastic edge to his voice but keeping the cold tone.
She placed the picture back on his desk in the same position she had found it in before looking back up to Crane and saying softly. “My point is that you have been through it you know what it is like… Someone else on this ship is just beginning to go through the pain and confusion… don’t you think you could be of some small comfort to him.”
Jack shook his head as he said. “Absolutely not… for starters I hardly know the man,, and secondly he has plenty of friends on the ship to help him.”
Janet sighed before saying. “and how many of them have the experience dealing with the pain such as you do.”
Again Jack shook his head. “the circumstances are completely different… It was different for me as it will be different for Smith.”
Janet stood up and sighed in defeat. “If you say so doctor.” She turned and left Jack’s office without saying another word even though he said no.. she knew she had succeeded she could read it on his face.
She went back out to the main sickbay and resumed her duties.
Five minutes later she heard Jack’s office door open and a small smile appeared on her face as jack walked out.
Jack noticed the smile and frowned back as he said. “I am going but I doubt it will do any good.”
Janet smiled wider and replied. “you never know.”
Jack muttered something under his breath before he resumed his walk out of sickbay.
Janet strained to hear what he said and asked out loudly as Jack walked away. “Sorry Commander what was that?”
Jack didn’t stop walking but he did say out loud. “I said You annoy me.” He made it out of the door before Janet could reply.
After a quick stop to his quarters to pick up something important Jack made his way to a turbolift. The ride to Smith’s quarters seemed to take longer than a usual turbolift ride did and when it did eventually stop at the correct deck, Jack sighed one last time before making his way to Smith’s door.
He stood in front of the door for a while as he straightened his uniform and made sure he looked half decent, finally he did push the control padd and waited for Smith to answer.
The door opened after a few seconds and Jack stepped inside, he looked around to see Smith reading a Padd and Jack straightened his shoulders before saying.
“Captain… It is regretful we have not had much time to get to know one another the last mission was rather hectic and I think it is important for the ships medical officer to know the captain... So if you will indulge me for a few moments”
Jack held up the item he had retrieved from his quarters a bottle of real earth bourbon.
“It’s the real stuff.. Not replicated.. I have a feeling you could use a glass.. I know I sure could.”
The journey to the Algeran Sector was going smoothly. The Captain, Executive Officer had been going through what they could expect when they arrived.
From what David could gather, before a complete update was given to him by Commander Rose, was that they were there to mediate in peace talks. but Tan wondered if they would find themselves deeper than thought.
On the second day of travel, Tan had been on the Holo-suite during his off-duty time, and had gone back to his quarters to change. He decided he could do with a little company, so he tapped his Comms badge.
=^= Tan to Jedda Rose =^=
There was a few seconds pause, where he wondered if she would answer, and was just about to close the Comm when she did.
=^= Jedda Rose .. Hello David =^=
=^= Hi .. Erm .. I was thinking of grabbing a snack and a drink in ten-forward .. I wondered if you weren't to busy you migh ...... =^=
=^= I'd love to David =^= Jedda interrupted. After arranging to meet in thirty minutes she closed the Comm.
He was off duty, so no need for a uniform. He changed into something less formal and headed out of his quarters. arriving at ten forward, he sat at a table next to the massive windows. The stars streamed by as the Olympia traveled at warp toward her destination. Ten minutes later Jedda walked in. She glanced round the room, smiling as she spotted Tan. He stood as she approached the table, followed discretely by a steward. David pulled back her chair, pushing it slightly forward as she seated herself.
"Hmm .. Very gallant." she said, a warm smile appearing.
Tan felt himself reddening, and concentrated on the steward, hoping not to seem too lame.
"Saurian brandy .. Jadda ?" Tan said.
"I'll just have a coffee if thats OK."
"Right ..." Tan said, "Make mine a cappuccino then." and as Jedda nodded her consent, he ordered one for her too.
David watched the young woman as she stared at the stars, she had the same look on her face as he had the first time he'd seen a ship at warp. He suddenly found himself stuck for something to say, and self-consciously looked at the stars too for a moment.
The steward arrived with the coffee and Jedda tasted hers before looking up and smiling.
"Nice .. I've not had cappuccino before, what's this on the top ?"
"Chocolate." David said, thankful they were talking rather than sitting in his usual total silence ..........
Steve was sitting at the desk in his quarters going over the usual crew reports. As the Olympia was en route to its destination, he didn't see the need to stay on the bridge for the entire journey, so it made sense to get some work done in his quarters.
Since his return to duty, Steve made sure he didnt jump right in with both feet. He took things slow at first and allowed Crystal the freedom to take care of a few things that he would normally deal with.
Just as Steve was finishing the last report, the door chimed. Placing down the PADD, Steve called out: "Enter"
The door opened after a few seconds and Jack stepped inside, he looked around to see Smith reading a Padd and Jack straightened his shoulders before saying.
“Captain… It is regretful we have not had much time to get to know one another the last mission was rather hectic and I think it is important for the ships medical officer to know the captain... So if you will indulge me for a few moments”
Jack held up the item he had retrieved from his quarters a bottle of real earth bourbon.
“It’s the real stuff.. Not replicated.. I have a feeling you could use a glass.. I know I sure could.”
At first Steve thought he was hearing things, and was about to go into a speech about Starfleet protocols and procedure, but then he thought: 'What the hell'
He gestured towards the spare chair on the other side of the room. "Please, take a seat." He waited for the Doctor to sit down. "So...what would you like to discuss then Doctor?"
Crystal First day out of Earth orbit.
Crystal got back to her quarters at the end of her shift wanting to do nothing more than collapse into bed and sleep for at least eight hours. It wasn't so much that she was tired more that she was simply drained. She hoped the Commodore would be returning to duty soon.
She was unsurprised to see the message light flickering on her desk, with a sigh she put off thoughts of sleep, sat down and tripped the messages. The first was audio only.
"Ummm Crystal," Crystal recognised the voice as Jedda's and knew that given the tone there was going to be nothing good in the rest of the message. "I'm still on the Olympia. I hope you don't mind..."
Of course Crystal minded. The last thing she needed right now was her teenaged cousin underfoot and possibly in danger and the Olympia and her crew headed into what promised to be a complicated if not dangerous situation. Crystal cursed, using a few choice phrases she had picked up from her predecessor and then sighed. She also wondered whether Jedda had come up with the idea of staying on her own... Crystal would have to have a word with Commander Tan
It was certainly going to complicate matters, she had to make sure that Jedda was kept occupied. She commed V'Sel and posed her current problem to the Vulcan CScO.
"Computer, locate Jedda Rose." Crystal said "Jedda Rose is in ten-forward." The computer replied.
Crystal got to ten-forward and quickly located her cousin. "Jedda, you need to come with me now."
Jedda knew better than to argue when she saw look in her cousins eyes. This wasn't cousin Crystal, this was C1C Rose giving an order to a first-year cadet. "Aye, sir." she replied without a hint of irony.
Crystal led the way briskly to the Science labs, she hadn't been down here in far too long and even now wasn't going to get to stay. Instead she introduced Jedda to Lt Commander V'Sel and let the latter assign Jedda some lab based duties that would keep her occupied for several hours a day.
Crystal walked back to her quarters intending to get the sleep she now felt she more than deserved.
****************************************************
Jedda Second day out of Earth Orbit.
Jedda was quietly working away in one of the secondary science labs. She was in honesty a bit scared of the CScO, she knew V'Sel and her cousin were friends but that had not softened the Commander's attitude. Still she had been issued with her own comm badge now and felt that she was doing something useful. Admittedly she was currently engaged in checking a series of data records and noting down the dates and conditions of each one. When Crystal had cooled down a bit Jedda intended to ask her about getting academy credit for her time on the Olympia.
=^= Tan to Jedda Rose =^=
For a few seconds Jedda did not respond. This was her first call to her comm badge.
=^= Jedda Rose .. Hello David =^=
=^= Hi .. Erm .. I was thinking of grabbing a snack and a drink in ten-forward .. I wondered if you weren't to busy you migh ...... =^=
=^= I'd love to David =^=
She tidied up her things and sought permission from the CScO to leave and went to ten-forward. She met up with David and accepted the coffee drink he had chosen for her.
"So, how are you? I guess you've been busy..." She was babbling a bit but very pleased to be here.
Doctor Jack Crane, sat down on the chair Smith had pointed out. After a few seconds he closed his ayes dor a moment and took a deep breath trying to block out his headache which had refused to go away.
“Well Sir, to be honest I was sent down here to see if I could help you through your difficult time… But having been where you are now I know that’s the last thing you want… and I know it’s the last thing I want… So I thought we should just try to get to know each other better… After all I have been here a while and we have only said about three words to each other in that time.”
Jack stood up and moved to the replicator. He ordered to small glasses with ice he went back to sit down and opened the bottle. He poured to small amounts of the bourbon and then handed Smith one.
“Can’t remember where I got this… Probably a form of payment for my services back when I worked for profit.”
Jack took a small sip from his glass, and began to cough. “Now I know why I didn’t open it until now… So how long have you been in Starfleet sir?”
David watched Jedda pick up the wide cup. It was wide, the froth containing sprinkles of chocolate almost brimming over the rim.
She took a sip, seemingly savoring the taste for a few seconds before smiling.
"So, how are you. I guess you've been busy ? ..." Jedda asked, noticing him trying not to grin, "... What ?" she said.
"Erm ..." David said, picking up a napkin and handing it to her, as she accepted it, he pointed at her nose, "... You've got some erm ..."
Jedda realized what he was talking about and wiped the froth from her nose. Both of them reddening at their awkwardness. Tan wondered why the hell he was so nervous. She was young, very pretty, and sat opposite him ..
"You were asking if I'd been busy." he said, changing the subject, "Well I've had things to do yes. The Opps Officer tends to be running round ensuring all the other departments are OK, but then it's basically down to the Department Heads."
He waited for her to take another sip of her cappuccino before attempting to pick up his own drink. At the moment he didn't trust himself not to shake it all over the table, and Jedda.
"Is Crystal going to be sorting something out for you to be doing while you are on board ?" he asked, relaxing more by the minute.
"Yes. She's arranged for me to do some time in the Science labs. I'm doing some work for Commander V'Sal."
"Ahh, good." David said, taking another drink as their small talk continued.
All too soon he needed to leave. it was the last thing on his mind, if truth be told, he'd willingly sit here all night, but he was set for a duty shift at zero six hundred and needed to get some rest. He offered to walk Jedda to her quarters and she accepted. They chatted about everything and nothing during the walk, but then they were at Crystal's quarters.
"Thank you for having a drink with me Jedda, I really enjoyed it." Tan said, again self-conscious.
"I did too David ..." Jedda replied, stepping into the quarters but not far enough to allow the door to close behind her.
"So .. Erm .. We'll I'd like us to erm ..."
"Goodnight David." Jedda said, a warm smile on her face as the door closed.
"What the hell's up with you David !" Tan said as he walked away, "You're the Second Officer on a Star ship for goodness sa ..."
Tan realized he'd been speaking out loud as two female Lieutenants stopped to watch him, bemused looks on their faces.
"Lieutenants." Tan said, increasing his pace, now totally embarrassed ..........
They were hours away from entering orbit of Galfar II, Crystal was running on tired and had been since Earth. Commodore Smith had apparent not yet returned to duty although she was ever hopeful that he would soon and then there would be a load off her shoulders.
She made it back to her quarters and was unsurprised to she her message light blinking yet again.
"Hi Crys, I hope I remembered right and the Olympia is your ship. If not... no worries. I'm on Galfar II don't worry about why at the moment. The upshot is I really need to speak to you in person. There's some stuff going on that I can't talk about on a comm link. hope to see you soon."
"Well," Crystal said to herself as she settled at her desk. "That complicates things." She had recognised the distinctive tones of her old friend James McKenna immediately and wondered what he had got himself involved in now. They'd been undergrads together but Crystal hadn't seen him in years. Last she knew he'd been working in some sort of fairly hush hush R&D.... Possibly.....
Crystal did a quick search. Her Starfleet clearance was enough to get her to some of the information she was after. It seemed that as well as doing R&D the company James worked with also did some investigative work tracking leaked inventions and treaty violations.
Crystal tapped he comm badge =/\=Crystal to David Tan, I know you're off duty at the moment David but I need to speak to you. Can you do by my quarters?=/\=
When David arrived Crystal informed him of her friend's message.
Sometime later.
Crystal had slept for a few hours buts she had things on her mind. She was trying not to think about what might be going on on the planet. She was walked on to the bridge and relieved the duty officer. She looked across to where Lt Pemberton sat at conn. She paced on the bridge for a couple of minutes and then walked over to him.
"Have we got anything further on Galfar II, I don't want to set off a political powder-keg by parking in the wrong place." She was trying to be light-hearted but her tension level was obvious in her words.
Tag: Lt Pemberton, have fun.
Steve eyed Jack closely as he took a sip of his drink, and the reaction that followed make him think twice about taking a gulp of his own. He put the glass down on the table and swirled it around.
"I've been with Starfleet for a number of years now. I don't keep track of exactly how many, I just let them come and go." Steve replied, and looked down at his glass. 'Oh, go for it. You've had worse.' He thought, as he picked up the glass and downed some of the liquid. Sure enough it was strong and had him coughing a bit.
"Maybe that should have stayed unopened!" Steve said to Jack, half laughing while coughing. "I originally joined Starfleet in order to make a difference, Before, I worked in my parent's restuarant back on Earth, but that just wasn't enough for me. So by joining the Academy I was able to go out and do my bit. Not much of a story really."
Setting the glass down, Steve paused. "So, how about yourself Jack. How did you start out?"
Jack watched the captain took a swig of the bourbon and coughed aswell, Jack was relieved it wasn’t just him overreacting.
“Now I think of it this was a gift from a patient… looks like he wa trying to poison me.” Jack remarked as he laughed.
He listened to the captain explain why he went into Starfleet, it was a story shared by many.
"So, how about yourself Jack. How did you start out?"
Jack looked up from his glass, and replied.
“Well I got my medical degree in the civilian system, I then got married and decided instead of join Starfleet I would join her on her expeditions in archaeology… well that didn’t last and after some unpleasantness I fled to Vulcan where I spent two years studying and hiding from the galaxy… eventually the Vulcan’s great sense of humour and fun was enough for me and I left… it took me a while to join Starfleet for a while I traded my services to passing cargo ships just to get from place to place.” Jack took another sip of his drink this time it went down much easier.
“Then on a whim I joined Starfleet.. mostly to help me forget about the pat and do some good while I was at it… and I was assigned here.”
Finishing what was in his glass Jack placed the empty glass on the table and looked back to Smith.
“you will find I am not like most Starfleet Officers.. I don’t care what my rank is… I don’t want to Command a ship one day… I just want to use my skills to heal people whoever they may be… What about you did you strive for command or did it jut happen one day?”
<Tag Smith>
Jacks comm. Badge came to life.
=/\= Reilly to Doctor Crane… there is an ensign here who is insisting he wants to be treated by you… apparently I am not good enough. =/\=
Jack rolled his eyes. And tapped his comm. Badge and said.
=/\= On my way. =/\=
Jack looked to the Commodore and said.
“Excuse me sir duty calls… No doubt Reilly is making a pain of herself as usual.”
Standing up he nodded politely to Smith before exiting the room.
