David reached his quarters, eventually. He'd made a complete fool of himself with Jedda. He'd had no idea whether she was waiting, expecting, him to simply kiss her goodnight, or if she would have slapped him across the face and arranged for him to be scrubbing plasma conduits for the foreseeable future. Dumping himself in a chair, he began to mull over the nights events when the Comm beeped. =^= Crystal to David Tan .. I know you're off duty at the moment David but I need to speak to you .. Can you come to my quarters ? =^= 'Oh my God .. Jedda had spoken to her Cousin, and now I'm going to feel Crystals wrath' he thought, wondering what the punishment for being a complete burk was. =^= Erm .. I can be there in a couple of minutes .. Crystal =^= David replied. =^= Thanks =^= Crystal said. He couldn't begin to gage the tone of her voice over the Comm, so there was nothing for it. It wasn't an order, just a request, so he'd simply, go. ~~~~~~~~~~Taking a deep breath, he tapped the door chime ... Seconds later the door slid aside. "Come in David." the Exec' said, stepping to one side, "Thanks again for coming." "If this is about Jedda, I can expla ......" "It's not about Jedda." Crystal said, a frown forming, "Why ... What's she managed to do now ?" David yanked the proverbial 'foot' out of his mouth and grinned, mainly in relief, that he wasn't here for a 'telling off' .. He explained, using as little information as possible, that Jedda had done nothing wrong. Seemingly convinced, Crystal replayed the message from her friend .. "..... The upshot is I really need to speak to you in person. There's some stuff going on that I can't talk about on a comm link. Hope to see you soon ....." David re-played the message and then gave it some thought .. It was a break they could use, that was certain. But then again, if things weren't how they had been informed, it was more than possible the Olympia was dropping herself right in the middle of something much much bigger than first thought. "You want my opinion ?" David asked, knowing full well that was what he was here for, he took Crystal remaining silent as a 'yes' and began to think out-loud, "Well .. First off, the Captain will need to know about this message. Then I would suggest contacting McKenna and seei ......" "I can't contact him directly." Crystal interrupted. "...... Then my second thought would be to find a way to get to the surface on our arrival and speak to him in person." Tan finished, unconsciously glancing at the bedroom door, wondering if Jedda was asleep, but getting his mind back on topic instantly. Both Officers gave serious thought to his suggestions until he spoke again. "Just how 'accessible' is your friend ? .......... < tag: Crystal / All >

Richard knew he had missed the start of the mission briefing but, to be honest it didn't bother him that much. He didn't have the burning curiosity that appeared to be a human trait, and if the mission effected the ship systems in anyway he would be best down here helping to get the work done rather then swaning about on the bridge with the more senior officers and part of any dangerous away missions. His paranioa may come from his romulan half but it and common lore told him that with his yelow/gold colour such jaunts would not be the safest of ideas. Also the extra engineering team at Utopia Plantia may have been older and more experienced then the youngsters he had been given before them, but they were messy.
Leaving equipment in the Jeffries tubes, inspection hatches open, at the moment Richard didn't feel like the Cheif Engineer, more like the head cleaner of a pre school.
"Lock the plasma flow rate of at 25% lower then their current levels, I don't want to risk fires developing due to systematic overloads", he told the ensign, crewman he was working with, before shouting across enginnering at another,"Rogh I want that Level 1 diagnostic by the end of the day". The call from his, 'former collegue was still on his mind, but Richard was unsure what to do about it. They hadn't contacted him since he had cut off the transmission, while the Olympia was in drydock. But why? Had he been too frank? What did she mean by that last phrase? 'Calm down, and focus', he told himself, 'Focus on the ship's engineering, not your past'.

"Come in David." Crystal said, stepping to one side, "Thanks again for coming."
"If this is about Jedda, I can expla ......"
"It's not about Jedda." Crystal said, a frown forming, "Why ... What's she managed to do now ?"
David brushed off the question and listened as Crystal explained about James' message.
"...... Then my second thought would be to find a way to get to the surface on our arrival and speak to him in person." Tan said Both Officers gave serious thought to his suggestions until he spoke again.
"Just how 'accessible' is your friend ? ..........
Crystal shrugged. "I'm sure that if I'm on the same planet as him I can get a message to him. Might even be able to leave one for him to pick up at his leisure or send him a message from orbit but I don't think hacking the Galfar communications system is a good idea." She gave a wry smile and scrubbed a hand across her face. "Thanks for your help David "
Tag: David if you wish to add anything.
After the SO had left Crystal went back to her work. One of the new messages in her pile was a letter from Starfleet Medical saying that Commodore Smith was returning to duty. It had apparently taken some considerable time to reach the Olympia, just one more thing seemingly over looked by the rush of bureaucracy that starfleet could send out. Crystal did a little dance around her quarters. She was relieved to no longer be in charge. Also it meant that she was able to send herself on the away mission to Galfar II which would make contacting James much easier. In spite of her earlier words to David she wasn't at all sure that James would be easy for her to contact. She was sure he'd do his best but he had sounded like he was in trouble and that did not bode well.
Another message on Crystal's list indicated that quarters had been sorted out for Jedda which was good, now Crystal good have her own space back once more.
She informed Jedda of the developments and then decided to catch a quick nap and then get back up to the bridge before entering orbit.
- An hour or so later -
Crystal walked on the bridge and found Commodore Smith all ready there. She informed him of the message from her friend and then added. "After we enter orbit I propose we send down a small away team to assess what the situation is?"

"Put us into standard orbit Mister Pemberton." the Captain ordered.
David knew that SOP, or standard operating procedure, called for the Olympia to 'request' orbital status from the governing body of the planet below, but it was obvious, given the circumstances, that it wasn't going to be asked for.
"Standard orbit mister Pemberton." David repeated when he noticed the Navigation Officers' hesitation.
"Aye Sir."
"Captain." Tan said, looking at the Command Officers, "I'd suggest the highest possible orbit. No point in intimidating anyone into a response, also, I'd suggest a geo-stationary orbit for the time being so we have a better chance of continuous contact with any away-team personnel ?"
David knew that Crystal understood his reasoning exactly. If her 'friend' could be an asset, then one hundred percent contact was going to be invaluable.
Tan began to receive readiness reports from various departments. He glanced at them while awaiting his orbital suggestion.
"Adopt a geo-stationary orbit three thousand kilometers north of the last received transmission." Steven said, "This way we're not sitting directly about you're source." he finished, glancing at the Exec'.
"Captain .. We're being asked to explain our orbital status by the authorities." the Comms Officer said.
"Tell them we are here to 'observe' and we'll do that from the orbit we deem best for the given circumstances." Smith said, almost dismissing the query.
David ordered continuous scans to be done of the visible surface. He wanted to know the second someone as much as twitched during the current situation ..........

Crystal and the small preliminary away team which consisted mostly of security personnel assembled in transporter room one. Lieutenant Granger was a bit twitchy, Crystal couldn't blame him, taking an away team down to a potentially hostile planet was bad enough without having the FO to look after... Crystal knew she did not require as much looking after as she once had but she wasn't a fighter.
Nor was she really a diplomat and that was the skill she thought was going to be tested on this mission. Councillor Tereth was meeting them on the surface. Crystal planned to send a message to James as soon as possible but the political situation had to come first. Councillor Tereth was an interesting character, he was younger than she was and had only been on the political scene for a couple of years. He was also a neutral in the ongoing civil conflict and one of the primary movers behind the peace talks.
The Olympia team beamed down into an open air yard. The Councillor was there with his own escort. He was short, only half a head taller than Crystal with black hair and the typical Galifarian vivid green eyes. He led them in to the building where the talks were to be held. It was supposed to be a true neutral ground having been built for the occasion. There was the odd builder still finishing things off here and there. The whole place was functional rather than ornate but that was an observation rather than a criticism.
"As you can see Commander we have gone out of our way to make this place as open as possible, no sniper perches and no hiding places" He gestured round the space. "We shall be starting the talks tomorrow..."
The councillor's words were cut off by a scream, Crystal whirled round to see that one of the 'builders' had drawn a weapon and shot one of Tereth's escorts. Further builders were drawing weapons as were the security personnel. Crystal pulled the councillor back towards a wall. As he had said there was no where to hide. She tapped her comm badge but was rewarded with crackle.
"They've cut comms, We need to get a message to the ship." Crystal shouted knowing that her action of getting to the wall had put her further from the entrance. Lieutenant Granger glanced at her once and then made some hand signals. One of the other officers ran out the area faster than Crystal though possible.
There was a firefight raging now and Crystal was doing her best to keep her own head and that of the councillor down. She knew he had survived other attacks but this seemed a step up from the hostile acts she had read about. Three more figures in black appeared in a transporter haze much closer to Crystal and Tereth, They approached slowly. Crystal wondered what was going to happen next, if one of them got within strike range they would regret it...
Crystal collapsed to the ground, unconscious from a heavy stun, less than a second later Tereth's body dropped alongside her. Neither of them were in any state to notice the grip of a transporter beam pulling them away for parts unknown.

Ensign Mara Connark
There was a fight on and it went against every instinct Mara possessed to leave but her senior officer was ordering her to so she ran. Being born and raised on a high grav world meant she was fast under Earth approximate gravity. She ran clearing the large room in a matter of seconds, she tapped her comm badge and got crackle. She kept moving trying to signal the Olympia every few steps hoping to get beyond the jamming field.
Eventually it chirped. =/\= Ensign Connark to Olympia, There's been an ambush the FO and Councillor Tereth are under fire. At least ten hostiles. And a comm jamming field in effect.=/\=

The reply to the authorities had been sent. Theew was no lies or untruths about it....the Olympia HAD been sent to observe, and also to mediate, but that would be worked on later. There had been no mention made about the team that had been sent down to the surface, so perhaps they were unaware of that. There was no further contact with the authorities, so it all seemed to be ok.
Steve turned to David and apprioached him. "What are the chances that they will leave it at that and let us get on with our mission?" He said, and just as David opened his mouth to reply an alarm started blaring.
An officer at the station with the alarm called out. "Captain, a jamming field has been erected a jamming field around the area where the away team beamed down. We cannot contact them at all."
Steve just looked David in the eye with mild annoyance. "Sometimes I just shouldn't say words." He sighed and rubbed his head. "David, see if you can find a way around that jam. I don't like the idea of Crystal and the team being there and not being able to contact them. I fear things will just get worse....and I have far too much pain and death for one lifetime."

"David, see if you can find a way around that jam. I don't like the idea of Crystal and the team being there and not being able to contact them. I fear things will just get worse...."
Tan was already working on getting through the communication problem. He found it quite easy to manage, mainly due to the fact that they didn't have today's technology, but were still using equipment from almost a decade ago.
Suddenly, out of no-where the comms opened:
=^= Ensign Connark to Olympia .. There's been an ambush the FO and Councillor Tereth are under fire .. At least ten hostiles .. And a comm jamming field in effect =^=
Now things HAD got worse.
=^= Did anyone else manage to get away Ensign ? .. Hang tight .. We will bring you back to the ship .. It's no longer safe to stay where you are =^=
David was already working on the problem. He was just about to inform the Captain he'd got it, when he noticed something .. Yes, he could easily get through 'jam' they were using, but whatever they had that was preventing a solid transporter lock, certainly was well above their current level .. It meant only one thing .. They had 'acquired' technology from elsewhere. but who would want to help these people, they didn't have anything worth fighting over. Just two factions fighting to overcome differences ...
"We can't beam them back Captain." Tan said.
"What !" Steven said.
"They have some sort of blocking system. there's no way we could get a positive lock on anyone in the away team." David said, thinking furiously, "Hold on ... We could modify our phasers to deliver a stun to everyone on the fire zone. OK, we wouldn't be able to beam down to help, but if we target the beam accurately enough, it's possible some of our people will be spared."
"Just as much an alternate outcome." Joel said, working on the targeting, "We could leave some of 'them' conscious !"
David knew it was the Captain's call, so he waited patiently while Steven ran through the options ..........

Ensign Mara Connark
=/\= Did anyone else manage to get away Ensign ? .. Hang tight .. We will bring you back to the ship .. It's no longer safe to stay where you are =/\=
Mara shook her head in response to the Commodore's question. Then replied formally over the comm. =/\=Lieutenant Granger ordered me to leave, sir. We had one officer down when I left and two members of the Coucillor's guard. The FO and the Councillor were still on their feet.=/\=
She paused expecting to be back on the Olympia any second. The transporter beam failed to materialise.
She was told that there was a transporter block in effect as well. Mara cursed savagely. Then suddenly aware that she had an open comm to Commodore Smith, she spoke again.
=/\= Sorry, sir. With your permission I'd like to go back and investigate. If the comm jamming is down I'll be able to fill you in on what happened.=/\=

Crystal's head hurt. She had a dull taste in her mouth that she put down to the after affects of the stun. She carefully opened her eyes, grateful that the half light of wherever she now was wasn't enough to assault her head any more. She looked around, she was slumped in the corner of a bare room. A feeble glow panel in the ceiling was the only source of light. The door appeared to be metal. In another corner lay Councillor Tereth. Crystal pushed herself to her feet and walked slowly over to him. She could see he was breathing.
Now the question became, had whoever snatched them been waiting to get the Councillor and had just grabbed her as a bonus; or had they been objecting to Starfleet being here and it was the councillor who was the bonus... She thought the first more likely but could not rule out the second.
Crystal looked down at her tunic and was surprised to see her comm badge still in place. She tapped it was wasn't at all surprised to just hear static. She pulled the badge off her jacket and put it in her pocket. If she could keep it it would make it easier to get out of here.

The young man lifted himself off of the biobed and rubbed his stomach, before he looked up and said. “Thanks Doctor.”
Jack Crane smiled as he patted the ensign on the shoulder and said. “No problem ensign just be more careful next time, your lucky it wasn’t worse.”
The ensign walked out of sickbay and Jack turned and looked at Janet Reilly and asked.
“What did you say to him to get him to dislike you so much Janet?”
Janet rolled her eyes as she scoffed and said. “He came in with a bad mood.”
Jack shook his head as he looked at Janet and smirked. “Somehow I still believe you said something.”
Before long news had spread that there was trouble down on the planet involving Crystal, Jack rolled his eyes as he heard the news. “Never get told anything I got to hear it from a maintenance officer who overheard a conversation.”
He grabbed his uniform jacket off of the back of his office chair and made his way to the bridge.
When he arrived, he walked up to the captain and Tan and asked.
“What’s going on down there.. Is anybody hurt?”

Commander 1st Class Crystal Rose
Time passed slowly but at least Crystal's head had stopped hurting. Councillor Tereth was still unconscious but his breathing was fine. No one had come to visit them yet. Crystal was dreading what would happen when the door finally slid open...
She had been over every millimetre of the cell and there was nothing that would allow them to escape it was a very well sealed box. Air was filtering in through a small grill in the door but there was no way she could pry that open. She had debated pulling off a couple of her rank pips and playing ignorant if they asked her anything about the Olympia but in the end decided against that. It was probably better to be a 'valuable' hostage that they could use in negotiation for what ever it was they wanted; not that the Commodore would negotiate with terrorists least of all ones that had abducted his FO.

Ensign Mara Connark
Mara made her way back area at a marginally more sedate pace than she had left it. She did not know what she would find. The hostiles had gone. Two of the Councillor's guard were down and as they were being ignored in the general bustle Mara knew they were dead. Ensign Porter was also laying unmoving in the dust.
Lieutenant Granger walked up to her, his uniform was dusty and scorched. "You got the message out?"
Mara nodded. "The Olympia busted through the jamming. I've got an open line to the Commodore."
"Commodore this is Lieutenant Granger, It was an ambush, sir. We've got one officer dead, two injured. They took the XO and the Councillor. I await your orders."

"Set it up as best you can David." Steven said, "We'll look at cleaning up the mess once we can get down there in force !" Tan began the phaser modifications. He knew full well that people could be hurt, but it was better than all the away-team perishing on the surface. For some unaccountable reason, David thought of Jedda .. Grateful that she wasn't directly involved with what was happening with the Olympia. His concentration snapped back to the job in-hand as he realized he'd almost been day-dreaming. It shocked him ... A lot more than he realized. "Captain .. I can put phaser-fire down over a one hundred meter radius ... That should, stun everyone in the area." Tan said. "What's going on down there ... Is anyone hurt ?" the doctor said, causing Tan to turn round. "We've got casualties Doctor ....." Tan began to say. "Then I need to get a team down there !" Crane interrupted. David looked at the Captain. He knew his plan would inflict more casualties, though thankfully no deaths, on both sides, rather than simply giving them a 'quick-fix' solution to all this. "Is there any possibility we could come under fire ?" Steven asked, looking at the Doctor. "We're clear at this point in time." Heubner said. Suddenly a Comm broke through the static interference .. =^= Commodore .. This is Lieutenant Granger .. It was an ambush Sir .. We've got one Officer dead with two injured .. They took the XO and the Councillor .. I await your orders =^= Tan had already aborted the firing sequence before the Commodore could tell him to do so. Smith wasn't going to open fire when the was the slightest possibility of another option. "We still have no way of getting a lock Captain." Heubner said. "Captain. If we reduce our orbital height to say, two hundred eighty kilometers, we can get a better, but still not a one hundred percent lock. We'll be more accessible to ground fire, but I think we could risk it." Tan said, trying to give his Commanding Officer every option. "Two eighty .... Won't we be visible from the surface ?" Steven said frowning. "If we adopt a Geo-stationary orbit, it's possible we'll remain undetected by the naked eye. We'll light up every scanning system they have down there in seconds though." David said, "But we could at least get 'some' of our people back aboard before we get blown out of the proverbial sky." Tan said, a casual but serious shrug escaping. He, and the rest of the Bridge crew waited for their Commanding Officers' orders .......... < tag : CAPTAIN >

"Two eighty ..... Won't we be visible from the surface ?" the Captain said, the slightest hint of sarcasm in his voice.
"If we adopt a Geo-stationary orbit, it's possible we'll remain undetected by the naked eye. We'll light up every scanning system they have down there in seconds though." David said, "But we could at least get 'some' of our people back aboard before we get blown out of the proverbial sky."
"We can't hold a geo-stationary orbit at that altitude Commander." the Science Officer said.
"We adopt the geo-orbit from here, then drop vertically until we can establish a positive lock." David said, convinced it would work. But it became a moot point of discussion as the Comms crackled to life ..
=^= Olym ... pia ... Lieutenant Granger ... They know you are going to try a res ...cue beam-out .. They will kill eve .. ryone on the surface if you try to tra .. nsport =^=
David just managed to resist punching the panel before him as he heard the garbled communication. It was a good idea, but whoever had the away-team had obviously thought of it too.
"Maintain our current orbit." the Captain said, a look of disappointment on his face ..
"Mister Pemberton." Tan said, with a nod to his CO, "I want options for getting the Olympia into the atmosphere and making a successful beam-out of our away team."
"Aye Sir." Pemberton said.
David watched the image of the planet as it slowly rotated below them, and wondered what the hell the Olympia had got herself into this time ..........

Commander First Class Crystal Rose
Crystal didn't know how long she had been waiting in the cell it felt like hours but she doubted it was actually that long. The door to the cell suddenly opened and a figure was propelled through it. Crystal managed to avoid having the new 'arrival' crash into her but did not see anyone beyond the door. It clanged closed again.
Crystal looked at the new 'arrival' although his face was badly bruised and his hair was centimetres shorter than when she had last seen him and black rather than its natural light-brown she had no problem recognising James McKenna. He opened one eye and looked at her.
I guess you found the problem here on your own. I should have known. His eye closed again. He was barely concious. Crystal struggled to move him into a better position. The Councillor hadn't moved and hadn't spoken Crystal had almost forgotten that he was there.
She was more concerned about James anyway. Clearly there was trouble on Galfar II and (as was often the case) she was neck deep in it. Not that she had any idea what that trouble was ore even which side was holding her hostage....
A short time later.....
James Mckenna gingerly opened his eyes, his head hurt and he ached in places that he hadn't known he had. Still, so far he hadn't told them anything. To his surprise he saw a familar face in a starfleet uniform bending over him. "Hi Crys, I thought you were a dream."
Crystal was relieved to see her friend awake. "I'm not a dream." she said simply. "So... you've got me face-to-face, care to tell me what's going on?"
That was the comment James did not what to hear. Yes it looked liked Crystal and he really wanted it to be her (barring the hit about his friend being held hostage of course) but he couldn't take the risk, not without testing the water first.
"Crys, back at Uni, do you remember that Quantum Theory exam Professor Galveson set us?"
A shiver went down Crystal's spine; that exam had had the entire first-year in panic-mode for weeks. Fail it and you'd be retaking... "Of course I remember, how is that relevant?"
"Tell me about the day before the exam, Crys. I need to know it's really you."
Crystal understood the need for secrecy even if it often frustrated her. She sighed. "Okay then. Let's see. It was a sunny summer's day, I'd got about five hours sleep the night before you 'd got even less. We met up outside the library after breakfast. Then just as we were about to go inside your girlfriend, Lisa, showed up and had a massive fight with you. I went inside at that point but I seem to recall that you'd said you couldn't meet up with her that day and she was angry that you were spending the day with me...."
James shrugged. Lisa had been a bit of a mistake on his part; a fun girl but she had believed that the whole galaxy should revolve around her. Heaven forbid that he should decide to study rather than see her... They'd broken up in the argument that Crystal mentioned. He shook his head to clear the memories and was rewarded with a slight ringing in the ears.
"Go on." he encouraged.
"well..." Crystal continued as she went on to detail the day as well as she could. She had to give James points for thinking on his feet. The day before an exam wasn't something either of them were likely to have discussed with other people, not least due to the stress they were both under at the time, and yet it remained distinctive enough that they could remember it.
James listened to Crystal's story, he was desperate to temper his desire for her to be real with rationality and the knowledge that he couldn't take risks. Sure is captors all ready knew what the problem here was (they were one of the causes of it after all) but he had other knowledge that he would willingly give Crystal (under other circumstances as he was sure they were being monitored) that he did not want their captors to know.
He held up a hand. "Okay I'm convinced. I'll try to fill you in on what's going on here."

Jedda Rose.
Jedda was worried, she had been due to meet Crystal for lunch that was half an hour ago and it wasn't like Crystal to be late. However as Jedda was learning, it was exactly like a starfleet officer to be called away on some mission. Especially as her cousin was the FO.
Jedda ate her lunch on her own trying not to worry too much. She'd give it at least an hour and then try to track down where Crystal was.

David's shift had finished some time ago, but with the Exec' on the surface, he felt it his duty to remain with the Captain. He glanced at Commodore Smith, worried that the man was getting tired, too tired to concentrate.
"Sir ..." Tan said, leaning close to his CO, "... Could I see you in private ?"
Steven looked at his Second Officer.
"My ready room." he said, getting up.
Once inside, Steven sat down heavily behind his desk. David went to the replicator and ordered two cappuccino's. Placing one in front of his Commanding Officer, he sipped the hot beverage while watching the seated man closely.
"If I may Sir, you need to get some rest." Tan said, vaguely wondering what manner of response he was going to get from the comment, "There's not a lot we can do from up here at the moment, Ensign Pemberton is looking into ways of getting us lower, and we're monitoring all frequencies for Comms."
"I can't leave the Bridge at a time like this David." Steven said, finally noticing the steaming mug and picking it up, "You of all people should know that."
Tan decided to use their long friendship put the conversation on a more personal level.
"Steven ..." he began, then continued when the use of the mans first name got no reaction, "... We've served together for a long time. I'll remain on the Bridge while you get some rest. I'll Comm you the second there's any developments from the surface."
"Coffee's good." the Commodore said, appreciating the warmth of the fluid as he drank, "OK ... I'll stay here and try to get some rest. I'm NOT leaving this office, or going to my quarters. You will need to stay on the Bridge for the time being. Give me an hour to rest up then we'll switch places."
"An hour is only goin ......"
"One hour Commander." Steven said, making sure Tan knew it was his final comment on the subject.
After a moment, David sighed. he was beat and knew it, but at least he'd managed to get Steven to rest, if only for the one hour.
"Aye Commodore." he said, turning to re-enter the Bridge.
"David ..." Smith said, causing Tan to turn, "... Thank you .. I appreciate this."
Tan nodded and walked onto the Bridge, the ready room door closing behind him. he sat in the Command seat and watched the view-screen.
They had people down there ... Somewhere ..........

They had people down there ... Somewhere ...David was getting frustrated by siting idle. There was nothing the Olympia could do of course. They were totally dependent on information from Crystal Rose and her away team.
The status quo would, of course change. The Commodore wouldn't allow the hostage situation to continue indefinitely ..
The turbo-lift doors opened and David was a little surprised to see the Marine Commander striding purposefully toward him .. Before he could speak, the Marine launched into his comments.
"We need to get down there and save our people Commander."
"Take a seat Lieutenant." Tan said, motioning toward the Exec's chair, "You won't be beaming down. We're doing all we can at the moment, but the situation is delec ......"
"Delicate my Arse !" the Marine interrupted, point blank refusing to sit, "My men could have our team back on the Olympia in short order. I request permission to beam down now."
David had remained quiet during the Marines' outburst, but now he needed to calm the man down.
"Mister Murdoch. Keep your voice down please. I told you you are not going to the surface. Take that as an order. When we hear from the surface we can re-assess the situation. It's possible you and your men will be needed, but for the moment they need to stand down."
Murdoch glared at Tan for many seconds, then he spoke quietly.
"I think that decision needs to be made by someone with more ... Seniority ... Commander." and with that he turned and re-entered the turbo-lift.
Thinking that the end of the conversation, David watched the view-screen as if hoping to spot the away-team by sight alone.
=^= Commander Tan .. Please come to my ready room =^=
Entering, David wasn't the least surprised to find the young Marine stood to attention in front of the Commodore ..
"I was just explaining to Mister Murdoch that while his concerns are noted, we have decided to wait for news from the surface."
"Aye Sir." Tan said, his eyes locked on th Marines.
"Lieutenant. This is your first deployment as a Marine Commander off-world ..." Steven said, addressing the Marine, "You need to understand the chain of Command aboard a Star ship. Commander Tan is the Second Officer. In the absence of the Exec' he takes on that role too ... I have every confidence in his decision making, and I hope you will defer to his experience and rank when making comments or recommendations ..."
"Aye Sir." the Marine barked.
"OK ... Dismissed."
Murdoch snapped a razor-sharp salute, before turning to head out onto the Bridge. David raised his eyebrows in frustration at what had happened, then with a nod to the CO, followed the Marine out.
Once on the Bridge, David followed the man to the turbo-lift. As he entered, Tan spoke.
"Mister Murdoch ..." David said, waiting calmly as the Marine slowly turned to face him, "DO NOT let that happen again .. Do you UNDERSTAND !"
"Sir .. Yes SIR !" Murdoch said as the doors closed.
Looking at the view-screen he tapped the Comm badge on his chest ..
=^= Bridge to Engineering =^=
=^= Engineering .. Ensign Martin =^=
=^= Richard .. I need you to look into way's we can get our people up from the surface .. Is it possible there's anything we can do to protect the ship from surface attack if we need to go down there .. anything you can come up with would be helpful =^=

Sighing, David sat in the Command seat and wondered what the hell was happening on the surface ..........

Councillor Sarath (the leader of the expansionist faction) was angry, he had liked COuncillor Tereth even if their policies didn't always agree certainly the young man had done nothing to warrant being abducted by the Isolationists like this. It was obviously an attempt to drive the Federation ship away.
He pressed buttons on his desk and requested a connection the Olympia, he needed to know that they wouldn't leave.
"Commodore Smith, My greetings to you and my apologies that you find us in these troubled times. I am saddened to hear of the abduction of your crewmember but it is Councillor Tereth's loss that concerns me more. The Isolationists have always disliked him for his openess and it is obvious that they have taken him to ensure that the conference does not go a head and thus you are no longer needed here. I need your assurance that you will not leave this system until the peace talks have gone ahead."

Councillor Sarath was frustrated, couldn't they see that it was obvious who was responsible? he sighed and tried to be dipolmatic. "Of course you must investigate. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you. I shall start by sending you information you requested." With that he signed off and sent an aide to dig up the relevant data.
Councillor Nereth (the leader of the Expansionist faction) was very worried. Councillor Tereth was a nice you man, a little to out-spoken for them to agree all the time but certainly he did not deserve being caught up in a mess like this, particularly not one so obviously designed to give those Federation types the chance to poke in to all aspects of Galfaran life. He wished they would simply go away. It was with great distaste and a heavy heart that he requested a communications link to the Federation ship in orbit. He had hoped that having them here as neutral observers would help but it was now clear that that was not the case.
"Commodore Smith", he began formally. "Regarding the abduction of Councillor Tereth, I would suggest that you allow the Galfaran authorities to conduct our own investigation. It is after all an internal matter. I sincerely hope that he will be located quickly and that the peace talks will go ahead on schedule."

Sarath winced internally wondering how he had managed to overlook that a Starfleet officer was also missing; that meant that there was no way that Starfleet would keep out of the investigation, and, if he was honest with himself, no way he could deny them.
"Of course you should proceed with your own investigations. I shall instruct my people to offer you every co operation within reason. I shall start by sending you the information you require." He signed off and then called an aide to gather the necessary information. Of course, he would go through it carefully before allowing outsiders to see it.
Doctor Alison Fenland was terrified. She knew that their investigation here was supposed to be top-secret but obviously someone had found out about it. She had just returned to their camouflaged base after a three day mission checking out strange energy readings in the ocean trenches. This had turned out to be several new species of fish but nothing more dangerous than that. The base had quite obviously been broken in to. Things were smashed and tossed everywhere. Worse, was that James seemed to be missing. He had been checking out some other energy readings in the southern polar region but he should have been back days before her.
Alison quickly checked the computers it seemed that their encrypted files were still here, maybe they had been copied but she doubted that. The good sign was that the Olympia had arrived and better yet it seemed that it was the ship that had James's friend on board. She quickly arranged a comm link, yes, it did mean that she was breaking cover but she felt the situation demanded it.
"Commodore Smith, Is this a secure line?" As soon as he had assured her that it was she continued "My name is Alison Fenland. I work for the Federation Scientific Investigative Agency my ident code is beta-three-three-six. My college and I have been assigned to investigate the appearance on non native technology on Galfar II. Now though our base has been attacked and my colleague and the senior investigator on this assignment, James McKenna has disappeared. I need your help. I can't stay here any longer as it is obvious our work has been compromised."
Tag:
"I shall see you shortly then." Alison said. "I shall bring all the data from our investigation with me but I will ask that you try to keep the FSIA's involvement here on a need-to-know basis."

After the conversation with Alison, Steve sat back in his chair. "Anyone else want to contact me?" He said out loud, rhetorically. It was all well and good telling Alison that he would send some people to get her, but finding a way to do so without being detected was going to take some thought.
He had been rudely awoken from his rest by the communications, and was now feeling worse than ever. It didn't help that in the short time that he was asleep he had a nightmare about Arya, which made him wake up sweating. The events that had transpired were NOT what Steve had expected when he returned to duty following Arya's death, but for the moment he just had to grin and bear it and get on with things.
Steve shook his head as if to remove the feeling and get back to reality. Almost as soon as he did that, he had an idea. 'If you don't think about it, the answer will appear.' He thought to himself as he stood up. He straightened his uniform tunic and walked up towards David.
He leaned in to David and spoke so people couldn't hear and get their hopes up. "I think I may have an idea." He said, pausing. "How about we search for any oncoming storms, or natural occurrences from the planet that may cause scans from the surface to be dispruted? That way we could get a shuttle in, grab Miss Fenland and hot foot it back to the Oly. Think that would work? If so, I want you on that shuttle to go and get her."

David had watched his Commanding Officer, and Friend, walked out of his ready room as the first of several Comms came from the surface. Tan stayed out of earshot as he could see Steven getting annoyed. He then took the third of the Comms and frowned intently as he listened ..
Then the Comm closed and Steven got up from his seat, moving over to Tan stood by the view-screen.
"I think I may have an idea." He said, pausing at David's side, "How about we search for any oncoming storms, or natural occurrences from the planet that may cause scans from the surface to be disrupted ... That way we could get a shuttle in, grab Miss Fenland and hot foot it back to the Olympia. Think that would work .. If so, I want you on that shuttle to go and get her."
David knew it would work, given the right atmospheric conditions .. He moved to the Science station followed by the Commodore.
"Ensign ... Bring up all readings for the upper and lower atmosphere. I need something to fly into, and then get back to the ship without detection."
"There's a geomagnetic storm that will disrupt power and communications throughout the western hemisphere." the woman said, "It will hit in the next twenty two hours and last for approximately six hours ... There's a weather front building in the same region ... Severe lightening."
"That'll do !" David said, "I'll have a shuttle prep'ed."
"Go." Steven said, happy 'something' was happening ..
~~~~~~~~~~
Breaking through the thermosphere, the shuttle was trying it's best to break itself apart, but David had one hundred percent confidence in his pilot .. The mesosphere caused their inertial dampers to fluctuate, but then they were in the Troposphere and in heavy rain. David hoped this would be enough to shield them from ground radar systems, and then they were on the ground ...
"Heading two two eight .. Alison is three hundred and seven meter's that way ..Let's go." Tan said, drawing his phaser.
The rain wasn't helping their progress, but Tan was grateful it was masking their bio-signatures ..
"HELLO ..." he shouted over the storm once they reached the co-ordinates, "Alison Fenland !"
"I'm here." a voice said, then David saw the woman, girl. 'She can't be older than her teens' he thought.
The six Marines formed an almost inpenatrative shield around the two as they made their way back to the shuttle .. Once in the air, the pilot decided that discretion wasn't the better part of valor, and once they reached six hundred kilometers, slammed the shuttle into full impulse and headed back to the safety of the Olympia ..
~~~~~~~~~~
Entering the Bridge, David asked the duty Officer where the Captain was ..
"He's in the observation lounge Commander"
David and Alison walked to the door and stepped through as it opened. Steven was sat at the long desk in silence ..
"Commodore .. This is Alison Fenland."
Steven got up and shook the offered hand, then sat down, looking at the planet slowly rotating below the Olympia.
"So what can you tell us Alison ?" ..........

Doctor Alison Fenland
Alison was twitchy, she knew this planet was dangerous and seeing Starfleet take the danger seriously enough that they had sent a squad of marines to collect her managed to both reassure her and make her more nervous.
She felt one of the many knots disappear from her shoulders as the shuttled touched down on the Olympia. She would have liked to rest and maybe freshen up but Commander Tan had hurried her straight to Commodore Smith. She got the distinct feeling that something was wrong but no one had told her what. The Commodore Smith waiting in the observation lounge. Alison dutifully offered her hand when she was introduced and then the three of them, settled at the table.
"So what can you tell us Alison ?"
Alison shrugged. "James and I were assigned to Galfar II a 23 days ago. It was rumoured that someone had been supplying off-world high-level technology to the planet with the aim of reigniting the civil conflict. We've seen evidence of jamming devices but so far have not been able to track back to the source. We believe the suppliers are on world somewhere and we were investigating unusual energy signatures. James went to the southern polar region five days ago and he should have been back two days ago. It is strict protocol to leave a message if you end up delayed and it really isn't like him to break protocol. I know something has happened to him."
Alison paused and looked at her hands trying to collect her thoughts she had James had become close during this and other assignments, she was desperately worried about him.
"I returned from my investigation a matter of hours ago and found that someone had invaded our base and damaged a lot of things. They shouldn't have been able to find it. Not without off-world technology anyway."

The Commodore was waiting for them, and got up to introduce himself as Alison and David entered the Observation Lounge.
Offering the young woman a seat, he and David sat down.
"So what can you tell us Alison ?" Steven asked.
David was a little bemused at the fact that Alison seemed to shrug before she began to speak, but he let it go as she began to tell them the circumstances of their situation.
"...... I returned from my investigation a matter of hours ago and found that someone had invaded our base and damaged a lot of things. They shouldn't have been able to find it ... Not without off-world technology anyway." she finished.
"Is it possible he is being held by the same faction that has our Officer ?" the Commodore asked.
Again the shrug, David decided it was nerves rather than indifference.
"How would I know who had your Officer ... All I know is that James is missing and I need you to find him." she said, almost in tears.
"We'll do all we can Alison." Tan said, retrieving a box of tissues and handing it to her. he went to the door and motioned to the Security Officer to approach, "Lieutenant, Please find this young lady some quarters. have someone posted outside, in case she needs anything."
"Aye Sir." the man said, waiting for Alison to join him then leaving.
"I think we should get the Transporter Chief to make whatever modifications necessary to get a lock, however tentative, on Commander Rose and this James, then get them the hell out of there. Hand this over to Star fleet. we're getting no-where fast ... As for the off-world technology ..." David said, slumping into one of the seats round the table ..........

=^= Bridge to Engineering =^= =^= Engineering .. Ensign Martin =^= Richard pressed his commbadge to reply to the captain, keeping his voice neutral. =^= Yes captain what is it? =^= =^= Aye sir I'll see what can be gone, Richard out =^=. Richard tapped his combadge again to break the link, sighing as he did so. Quickly he moved to the engineering systems master display, thinking. 'Obviously using shuttlecraft was out of the question, as they would be just as vunerable to enegery blasts from the planet's surface as the ship. Deploying the Multi Vector Assualt Mode was a posibility... The Promethus class was basically three impulse ships in one,the two remote controlled parts of the vessel could easily neutralize the threat from the surface... but only the, 'saucer' section had transporters. But those lower sections contained the main deflector and some phaser arrays'. 'If we established a low orbit of the planet using the phasers strips on the ventral section to bombard the planet surface with tetyron particles', Richard thought to himself, hurriedly grabbing a red engineering PADD, 'then their energy waepons should be rendered useless giving us time to transport up the crew stuck down there, it all depends on where those enrgy weapons are' He didn't like the idea of seperating the ship partly because of the large number of, 'checks' he and his team was obligated to carry out every time, and it never felt good, to use a metaphor, it felt like being an athleleite but with no legs. Very distrubing. He gestured to two of his engineering team to join him. "Mekko, T'kel, Go down to deflector control and use it to reinforce the shields using pulses", Richard told them hisoice neutral. "Why not just raise the deflector shields instead of intermitant pulses from the array", Mekko asked him. "Because Mekko, if we raise the deflector sheilds we can't use the transporters", Richard replied trying to keep the annoyance from showing on his face,"The pulses may not enhance the sheilds as much but it should protect us long enough to and till allow us to transport our missing crewman outa there, so get going, NOW!". "Johnson you and Rhiana go down and remodulate the venteral phasers couplings to emit a tetyron particale feild, I'll be on the bridge", Richard said handing Rhiana the engineering PADD as he passed her open his way out of engineering and down the corridor to the turbolift, grey PADD in hand to help explain his idea to the captian. "Deck 1 Bridge", he told the computer as he stepped in to the turbolift. As he left the turbolift he went straight to the engineering station and activated it. Tag: David Tan

David waited patiently for something to happen. The Commodore was reluctant, not unsurprising given the circumstances, to go jumping in too quickly. There was always an unknown element in situations like this one.
He heard the turbo-lift doors open, and turned to see the Olympia's Chief Engineer enter.
Getting up, Tan walked over to Richard ..
"You've got something ?" he asked, then watched the display as Ensign Martin explained what he had come up with.
"...... I think we should be able to get away with it." Martin finished.
"The Tetryon field should mask us as we near the surface, but as soon as we complete the beam-out we'll be vulnerable." Tan said.
"That's true." Martin conceded, "But assuming we can make orbit, we should be able to head out of the system with at least a minimum head start." the Engineer said as Commodore Smith approached the two.
David brought him up to speed re the idea Richard had come up with.
"They have ships in orbit." Steven said.
"I think if we wait until we move into the dark side of our orbit, then get down there, we should be in position to beam Crystal and James from the surface and get free of the atmosphere before the y can react. It's going to be close, and if we're detected approaching we'll be in trouble ....."
They waited in silence as Steven went over the Engineer's calculations once again ..........

Commander First Class Crystal Rose
"... and then I opened my eyes and saw you." James finished. He had filled Crys in on as much of his story as was safe for other ears. The Councillor had come around somewhere in the middle of the story although he was still woozy. The three of them were now sitting on the floor in a rough circle. From James's perspective he might as well have been telling camp-fire stories, he ached and didn't dare try to move fast still, as long as he stayed still things were okay.. He, however, doubted things looked as good from the others perspectives, the bruising across his face (which must haver been quite something given the sidelong glances Crys kept giving him) probably spoiled the mood somewhat."
Crystal looked at her friend, she was worried about him, he was too pale. Possibly he could have spent the last three months away from UV light but knowing James Crystal doubted that. She knew he had lost blood, he wasn't talking about what had happened to him and she wasn't going to press, she did not feel that this was the time or the place.
She was worried about James and she was worried about the Councillor, she decided this was a good thing as it stopped her worrying so much about herself. It was then that door to their cell opened. Crystal was half-expecting to see a swarm, of Starfleet security personnel, she was more disappointed than anything else when to black clad beings stepped into the doorway. They weren't Galfaran, that was obvious, they were each about as tall as Crystal was but about twice as broad. One of them gestured her towards them. Crystal thought about ignoring the gesture but then decide against it. If they got 'upset' there was no guarantee they'd take it out on her. Crystal got slowly to her feet and walked towards the door. She kept her chin up and her face front she didn't want to look back.
James watched in silence as his friend was led away, He didn't know what they captors would do to her but doubted it would be pretty. He and the Councillor sat in silence neither one seemingly wanting to mention what might be happening.

Steve was mulling over his options on the Bridge. If things weren't timed right, then they could well end up in a firefight with the other ships. All of them against the Olympia could be a problem, but with the MVAM enabled, it would at least level the odds and buy some time.
His first priority was to rescue Crystal, but that didn't mean that he wasn't going to rescue the others as well.
Looing over to David, Steve beckoned him over.
"I want you to go and get prepared for the rescue David. You and me and a group of security personnel are going to rescue our people and get this finished once and for all. And before you say anything, there is no stopping me on this one....I am not losing any more of my crew on my watch."

"Make sure the crew know what's at stake here. I want them ready should things turn south. I'll be in my Ready Room for a short while, then we will depart."

"I want you to go and get prepared for the rescue David. You and me plus a group of security personnel are going to rescue our people and get this finished once and for all. And before you say anything, there is no stopping me on this one .... I am not losing any more of my crew on my watch." the Commodore said, almost jumping out of his seat, "Make sure the crew know what's at stake here. I want them ready should things turn south. I'll be in my Ready Room for a short while, then we will depart." David watched his Commanding Officer stride purposefully into his office. Tan could tell that the Bridge crew had noticed it too. Once the CO made a decision, he usually acted on it with haste, but good planning too. David hit his Comm badge and reeled off a list of people he wanted on the away team. He told all of them, including the Olympia's Marine Commander and his 2IC, to be in the observation lounge in ten minutes ready for a quick briefing before going planet-side ... ~~~~~~~~~~ "OK ..." Tan said, looking around the now slightly crowded room, "You all know the stakes here ... We are going down to the surface. We're going to be getting our Exec' back along with a friend of hers. There's an image of him on the PADD's in front of you all, so familiarize yourself, because believe me we won't have time for long introductions ..." The door had opened while Tan was speaking. The Commodore entered but remained silent, nodding to his Second Officer to continue the briefing. "Commander Rose and a civilian, Mister Trantor .." David said, refreshing his memory from his PADD, "... Are being held under a portable shield, and by the looks of things, under guard at all times. So, I'll need you're Marines to take out the shield first Lieutenant Murdoch, then have men secure our perimeter. The Commodore, Myself, you and the Security teams, will grab our targets and set up pattern enhancers so we can beam direct to the Olympia ... Then we run like hell !" Tan finished. He noticed several of the group do a double-take as the Commodore joining the away team was mentioned. But to give the crew credit, no-one poined out the obvious .. He looked at the determined expression on his Captain's face. "Commodore, do you have anything to add before we leave ?" Tan asked .......... < tag : ALL >
