Mission 19: Isle of the Sane
Sypnosis:
The USS Raven is currently deployed deep in the Draconian Gulf, on exploratory duties. After successfully completing a scientific investigation on a cataclysmic variable star, the ship receives a call from an insignificant star in a quiet and little-known system. The transmission is being sent out in all directions radially from the planet.
So the Raven delves deeper into the gulf than anyone ever has before in recent times, and as they approach the mysterious system, the transmission they're constantly receiving grows more and more powerful, drowning out any other transmissions they can receive. When they arrive in orbit of the place that the signal is originating from, the crew of the Raven find themselves face-to-face with a truly idyllic world. The physical composition could not be more perfect, a place with exactly the right balance to support humanoid life. The planet's surface is 80% water, with a string of small to mid-sized land masses spread obliquely across its face, and stretching right around what is roughly the horizontal axis. The lands appear lush and green, with dashes of yellow-brown scattered across them. The ship registers much forestry, with exotic biological patterns and conditions, and the planet is teeming with life.
Perplexingly, the Raven can not find the precise origin of the transmission they had picked up, all they knew that it was coming from the planet. They send an away team to investigate, and on landing discover a hitherto unseen group of structures. As the Raven reports to the surface that other structures have revealed themselves around the world, the away team suddenly fall out of contact.
Andae: Ok, so I've started this one off. I have us starting from the point where we've just arrived in orbit of the idyllic planet, but you are all free to effectively back post the things that have happened to your character before that. More sypnotic developments will follow after we get the away team down there. Enjoy and let's make this a great mission!

"I wish I'd read those new orders when I first got them," Blakus said. He scratched his head as he sat back in the chair, letting the seat rotate on its balance near to the floor.
Lieutenant Frost vocalised a sound of amusement and folded his arms. "It was supposed to show the accretion properties when we closed to within four million kilometres, but I mucked it up," Blakus continued, tutting to himself gently.
"It's over now, sir. Besides, it was the helm officer's fault." Frost consoled the inconsolable Executive officer, the expression of amusement not fading from his face. Blakus continued to shake his head but this time neglected to deliver a response. They'd been over it several times with a slightly different tack, but the truth was that the Raven had failed to monitor CQ Draconis correctly during its 'mini-IA nova'. And while, as Frost said, it was true that they still gathered some very useful information, and that the assignment had overall been considered a success, Blakus could not get away from the fact that he had let his own side of things down, it was a personal failure that translated into something much larger, and it would not be forgotten in a hurry.
Cataclysmic Variables were very interesting phenomena that had been known of for centuries, it was rare for a ship to be able to observe the flash of the accretion disk as its material spiralled circularly into the white dwarf of the variable's centre. Blakus's reading up on this particular variable, to refamiliarise himself with the phenomenon's properties, had turned out to be almost for nothing. And now the Raven was off, exploring elsewhere in the Gulf, tracking the mysterious transmission that appeared to be originating from a nearby star system, a few days' journey at appreciable warp factor...
"Approaching system 9 Draconis, undesignated except the catalogue number seemingly..." the helm officer trailed off and looked back to the nav console.
"Thank you," Blakus said, handing a PADD off to a waiting crewman and beginning to step around to the command arena from the upper deck. The viewscreen displayed the familiar black of space punctuated with point sources of bright light, but one of those points was just resolvable as a 2-D projected sphere, and was obviously part of the foreground. 9 Draconis...
"Reference with the transmission source and bring us to those coordinates."
"Aye, sir."
"Sir," said Sharp at Ops, "The transmission is becoming stronger, much stronger. Analysis indicates an exponential increase towards the source.. correlating with the second of the two bodies in this system."
Blakus nodded, "Take us there, Helm. Sharp, continue to monitor that transmission."
Minutes later, in orbit of 9 Draconis II...
It was not stunningly high-pitched, but the incredibly aggravating and invasive squeal still assaulted the ears of the Raven's bridge crew. It came in on the speakers, seeming to transcend every surface's solidity and permeating all of them with unremitting voracity. Holding his ears and wearing an expression of extreme discomfort, Blakus spoke out against it, "Cut the channel, Will." In seconds, the sound was ceased.
At Ops, Sharp was shaking his head. "It's still transmitting. Relentless, it doesn't stop and it's coming directly from that planet. Can't seem to pinpoint the exact source though..."
"I wouldn't be surprised if they started denting the hull with this comm bombardment," Blakus muttered, as he jabbed a finger at a button on the armrest. "Captain Torek to the bridge."

After spending a large part of the morning running through the Raven's new orders, Carl asked Andae to oversee the final preparations as he had something to do on the Star base.
"Give Sarah and the baby my best wishes." Blakus said, grinning at Carl's obvious embarrassment.
~~~~~~~~~~
Sarah looked a thousand times better than she did the day before, though of course he wasn't stupid enough to actually point this fact out. She was dressed in a pink outfit that complimented her eyes, her red hair tied back in a ponytail ...
Carl stopped dead in his tracks ! 'What the hell am I thinking, this woman has just lost her husband, and I'm responsib' ......
"You going to stand in that doorway all day ?" Sarah asked, breaking his chain of thought.
"What, no, sorry." Carl said, entering the room. He looked at Nadia, asleep at the side of the bed, then smiled at Sarah, "You're looking rested today."
"Is that you're way of saying I no longer look like some demented she-devil ?" she said, then laughed as Torek reddened, "Only joking." she reassured him.
Carl remained silent, trying to think how he could break the new he was leaving. But Sarah was apparently much more observant than he thought.
"You're leaving." she said, making it a statement.
"Yes. Tonight." was all Carl could reply.
"So I ... We, won't see you again."
Carl realized that he didn't want that. He 'wanted' to see her again, and if it was what she wanted too, then he didn't see there being a problem. They could stay in touch during the mission, and Carl knew that she wasn't going to be allowed to leave, not for the time being at any rate ..
They sat, talking quietly so not to waken Nadia, but the baby had other idea's, one being that getting fed had precedence over mere conversation ... Carl checked the chronometer above the bed. He needed to leave, and yet again Sarah got there first.
"I hope you keep your promise time too." she said.
"I will." he said, leaning to kiss Sarah on the cheek. Then gently kissing Nadia on her forehead, he moved toward the door.
"I hope so." Sarah said as he left ... Carl fully intended to keep his promise ..........
~~~~~~~~~~
=^= Captain Torek to the Bridge =^=
=^= On my way =^=
Carl put the last few words to the letter he had been writing, thanking Sarah for the photos of both her and Nadia. He let her know things had gone as expected with their arrival in the system, and they hoped to have the scans completed soon, then ordered the computer to send it ...
"So that's Nine Draconis Two." he said, taking the seat vacated by his Exec' and looking at the image on-screen.
"I still can't understand why I can't pin-point the source of the signal." Sharp said, a frown set deep onto his face, "But if I didn't know better, I'd say it was directed right at us."
"Not out into space ?" Torek asked, a little surprised.
"Originally, the signal seemed to be being sent omni-directionally, but as we entered the system, it reorientated, and is now definitely directed at the Raven herself Captain." Ensign Parkin said from Science.
"Standard orbit Mister Cavit." Carl said, a wry shrug manifesting itself as the ship neared her destination.
He watched the blue green planet below as they approached. If someone down there wanted to say 'hello' they certainly had a strange way of going about it. Though it was always possible they were unsure of the Raven, considering her a possible hostile. that would account for their caution, but then again, why make contact if you don't want to talk. 'Wouldn't you simply remain silent ?' Carl thought ..........

Daniel looked nervously out the window as they neared the raven, Daniel had up until seven minutes ago not been able to stop pacing back and forth in the shuttle on the entire trip from earth to the raven. Daniel was afraid of the welcome he would receive when he arrived, having left under very strained circumstance, having almost set of the ships self destruct. Evan who had been sitting quietly listening to Daniel’s constant worrying spoke “Danny, you have got to calm down, the worst that could happen is the XO or the captain will throw you in the brig at first realising Daniel Loire is you.” Daniel turned to his nearly wed husband with a look that mixed anxiety and announce “Oh right, very helpful” Daniel smirked a little before returning to his pacing having given it a minute as the pilot had asked. “When we get there, I will go to the captain, hopefully he will give me five seconds to explain before shooting me .... on second thoughts i am going to our quarters and refusing to come out” Daniel tried to show Evan that he was joking, or at least he bad version of a joke when Evan stood up “If you even try getting out of this i will personally drag your [word deleted] up to the bridge and throw you into his ready room is that clear!” Daniel tried to read him but all he got was a forceful look that told him he was not kidding. “Fine, but if i end up in the brig i want you to join me so i can kill you myself”. Both men smirked before the pilot turned round ”You two have been married what 10 days and there are already death threats ... we are in visual range of the raven, i have sent our docking request so we should be there in a few minutes” both Daniel and Evan nodded before sitting down and waiting.
Having spent several minutes waiting for a reply to realise that a signal from the nearby planet was interfering with every and all communication method short of tapping on the hull Daniel and Evan prepared to be beamed aboard, thankfully for them the Raven’s shields were not raised to full strength and so they could punch though. “Are you sure about this, their security system might consider this an attempt to board, could their sensors be affected by this signal?” Daniel looked at the pilot who shook his head “Unlikely or we would be unable to register the raven as well, and we tracked her here, i would say they have kept the shields low so that we could beam over” Daniel did not feel reassured by this but had little else to say, turning to look at Evan who simply smiled as at that moment the transport gripped them.
Daniel looked around to find himself in a transporter room on the Raven, the Lieutenant that was manning the controls looked a little shocked to see them arrive, Daniel was about to explain when Evan beat him to it. ”Sorry Lieutenant but the interference blocked our comms. so we decided to pop in without warning you. Could you tell me where your captain is?” Daniel now knew why Evan had spoken first, so as to stop Daniel trying to worm his way out of seeing the captain, ”Well, i believe he is on the bridge, like most captains are” Evan accepted this answer and was behind Daniel like a flash “I know, no need to push” Daniel, resigned to the fact that he was very likely in ten minutes to find himself back in a small room again he walked as calmly as he could, which at this moment was like a nervous reek, making his way the bridge.
Leaving the turbolift Daniel looked around to find the captain looking at the view screen with a look of curiosity, Daniel felt weak and tried to walk backwards into the turbolift when he felt Evan push him gently out. Daniel looked at Evan before giving up as he knew he was not going to win this argument, “Captain Torek, Commander Daniel Loire reporting in sir, shall i go to the brig then?” Daniel did not know why he added the last bit but he felt he could at least annoy Evan before the captain had time to react.

When the Raven began tracking the unknown transmission, Will had thought that it would turn out to probably be nothing and so he had turned the tactical station over to one of his men and went to the gym to work out. He had returned to the bridge just as they arrived at the mysterious location and it seemed none too soon. As they approached the planet, the transmission turned into a high pitch. Will quickly but loosely covered his ears. It was one of the worst noises he had ever encountered.
"Cut the channel, Will."
He quickly killed it and the Ops officer informed them that the transmission was still occuring and that there was still not a definite fix on its location.
The XO called the captain to the bridge and after determining that the signal was directed at the Raven, they went into standard orbit around the planet.
"Sirs. Whatever is causing the signal, it's so strong that it's blocking out any and all other communications. I'm not reading any communiques anywhere else."
"What about live forms, Will?" asked the XO.
"Sensors aren't picking up anything down there, sir. Just the planet itself." he responded.

Andae sat in his chair scratching at his chin. He'd recently shaved, and thus the area of his skin was smooth; it was quite pleasing to sense that smoothness and ponder on recent happenings at the same time. Somehow, it offered him a quiet place for thought, the motion of his hand on his face dispelling any potential elements of disquietude that might come from the outside.
So... he thought, The communication is only focussed on the ship now.. The radial transmission must have begun converging on to just the Raven as the ship neared the planet, he reasoned, perhaps once whatever intelligence was behind those transmissions realised that there was a craft approaching their planet.
"No lifesigns at all?" he asked Will. "Is it that our sensors are reduced in capability because of the transmission or is there just nothing down there...?" he trailed off, not really sure that Jamison would be able to give a full answer to that query at this stage in proceedings.
There was a moment's silence on the bridge, a slight lull, poignant amidst the norm of the usual busy voices and the quietly frenzied activity.
After conversing quietly with the Captain, Blakus spoke issuing those orders he'd just had confirmed to him. "Sharp, Jamison, this way please." He led them to the side of the bridge. "I want you to work together to try and decipher what the source of that transmission is. It must have a source other than the planet itself, because this isn't making any sense at present. If you find anything, be it transmitter or perhaps a building, report it back to me or the Captain."
<Tag Will, Robert>
No structures at all on sensors at the moment, how very odd all this was. This system was not even on their list for exploration. They were meant to be due to complete the cataloguing of two more systems in the Gulf, 9 Draconis was not one of them. But something like this could not be ignored, simply for the sake of human curiosity and the will to explore the universe, a lease was given to all Starfleet officers, especially the Command officers of starships. And the starry-eyed duo that were the senior most officers of the Raven were certainly those to exercise that exploratory right.
As Blakus pondered the absence of anything meaningful on the surface, an officer he had not seen in a while arrived on the bridge, his shuttle finally having arrived and his orders seemingly having gone through. "Commander Biers, or Loire, good to have you back with us," Blakus said once the Captain was done with him. "The Counselor's seat is yours," he said welcomingly, spreading his hand to the chair on the Captain's left.
<Tag Biers/Loire>
Blakus retook his seat, glancing at the viewscreen. In its left corner, the blue globe with the obliquely stretched islands glowed in the light of 9 Draconis. The seeming paradise of the planet was no disguise either. The sensors had managed to find that the atmosphere was a delicious combination of oxygen and nitrogen, no quantities of harmful substances in the air... What else was down there?
"Captain, if Sharp and Jamison turn up with something an away team might be in order." The XO shifted in his chair to watch Torek retake his seat.

Carl stood in front of the massive view-screen, looking down an the blue green planet below as they entered orbit as Commander Biers approached.
"Captain Torek ... Commander Daniel Loire reporting in Sir. Shall i go to the brig then ?"
"Sorry ?" Torek said, pulled from his contemplation, "Welcome aboard Mister, Loire ... There's no need to report to the Brig. We're in the middle of something as you can see, let the Exec' know you have reported. Oh, and please ask your, partner, to leave the Bridge." he finished, wondering briefly what the Councilor was talking about.
"Aye Sir." Daniel said, relieved.
"No life-signs at all ?" Blakus asked Will, "Is it that our sensors are reduced in capability because of the transmission or is there just nothing down there...?"
"I don't understand it." Will replied.
'Is it possible the signal is automated ?' Carl wondered.
"Sharp, Jamison, this way please." Andae said, proceeding to give instructions for what he wanted done as Torek went back to the Command area.
"Captain, if Sharp and Jamison turn up with something an away team might be in order." Blakus said as Carl sat.
Torek looked over to the two Officers working on the problem. He knew what reaction his next comment was going to get, but Carl felt there was something down there that warranted his attention.
"I'll be joining the away team Andae."
There was a few seconds' delay, obviously the Exec' was formulating something other than the standard reply to the Captains comment.
"Sir ... Regulations aside ... I think we need ......"
Carl listened to his Exec's argument in silence. He hadn't expected him to simply say 'OK' at the idea his Commanding Officer was planning to step into a totally unknown, possibly unsafe, environment, and when Andae had done, Carl conceded that he would remain aboard until the Exec' deemed it safe for him to come to the surface in person.
This was the one aspect of command that infuriated Carl at times, he'd never lost the eagerness at beaming into the unknown, and now he was reduced to waiting for permission ..
"Yes mother." Carl muttered light-heartedly, feigning a sulk, "Anything yet Commander ?" he said, turning to Jamison and Sharp at the Tactical station ..........

Jamison and Sharp spend the next three hours trying everything they could think of to pinpoint the signal but to no avail.
"Sirs." Will finally began. "I'm sorry to report that the closest that we can determine to the signals location is the Northern continent, if you will. A rough bearing of 186.3 by 76.9. But according to our sensors, there's nothing there."

Oh how he hated the thought of being a CO. Blakus's Captain continued to hold his the same insistent look that had accompanied his vocalisation - the one that confirmed he intended to join the away team. And Blakus felt sorry for him, not because he wouldn't be able to go, for surely despite whatever argument he was able to come up with, Torek would eventually find a way of getting himself down to the surface. But his sympathy was with the man, for simply the position that command had and would again put him in: Having to face a very difficult situation, everytime he mentioned the words 'away team' and 'I' in the same sentence. Regulations bound him, XOs advised and were even given leave, in some circumstances, to physically bar him from stepping near that transporter pad. And Blakus had to play his part. "Sir ..." he began, "Regulations aside ... I think we need to consider the fact that we have detected very little of anything down there, and yet we have this incredibly strong transmission emanating from it. From my own personal viewpoint, nothing to do with the rulebook, this is already a potentially very hazardous away mission." Torek seemed to bite his lip and then purse them together, clearly gaining in agitation but not willing to start a debate with his XO for whatever reason. And if he did wish to do so, Andae was sure he'd give Commander Jamison the bridge and lead him to his ready room. "Yes mother." Torek muttered, in a change of mood that, unusually, caught Blakus offguard. "Anything yet Commander ?" the Captain asked Jamison. Jamison looked down over the tactical rail, Sharp glancing down as well by his side. "Sirs." Will finally began. "I'm sorry to report that the closest that we can determine to the signals location is the Northern continent, if you will. A rough bearing of 186.3 by 76.9. But according to our sensors, there's nothing there."Blakus leant over to make the gathering of officers a quartet. "Which means that it could be originating anywhere along those coordinates right to the centre of the planet." An odd thing to say, he admitted, but it was a valid point. "Get an assistant on it, Will." He told the tactical officer and then quickly glanced at Carl before standing up. "We're going down to the surface. Cavit, Sharp.. Loire, and Jamison you're with me."
The away team took a while to assemble. Blakus didn't want to be short on personnel as was so often the case, so, as usual, he went a little overboard. In addition to the four bridge officers, he requested that they brought members of their departments whom they thought would be fitting. He also had the chief medical officer accompany them from sickbay. Eventually they all started arriving, and once all were assembled, Blakus, standing on the pads, gave them instruction. "Ok, Commander Sharp, as soon as we arrive I want you and your team to spread out and start scanning the surrounding area meticulously. Of course, focus your efforts around the set of coordinates you and Will found." <Tag Sharp>"Will, I'd like you and your security to set up a perimeter in the general vicinity of the coordinates. Be extra vigilant." <Tag Jamison>"Mister Loire, the reason for you accompanying this away mission is that if there is something down there that our sensors can't detect, an empath might come in very handy." <Tag Biers/Loire>Finally the XO turned his eyes to those of the Raven's new helm officer, "Commander Cavit, you will be with me." Blakus kept to himself the real reason for her accompanying the team, that as she was a new crewmember he wanted to test her proficiency on offworld missions. With that, they stepped on to the pads and beam out commenced... <Tag Cavit> OOC: Please, please post your starting of the away mission! >

After calling Lt Stevens to the bridge to replace him at tactical, Will ordered a dozen more of his men to meet the away team in the transporter room. He was giving out assignments as the others were arriving. Once everyone was there, the XO started giving out his own assignments.
"Will, I'd like you and your security to set up a perimeter in the general vicinity of the coordinates. Be extra vigilant."
"Aye, sir." Will answered. He than turned and with a simple nod, 2 of his men joined him, Sharp, Commander Blakus and Commander Cavit on the transporter. He wasn't about to let the XO beam down without some security. His other men had their assignments. There was a security guard for each group of the away team in case they needed to separate and 6 others to setup the perimeter. Will would be free to move around amongst them.
"Security detail all set, sir." he said to Blakus as they awaited his order to energize.

"Yes mother." Carl muttered light-heartedly, feigning a sulk, "Anything yet Commander ?" he said, turning to Jamison and Sharp at the Tactical station ...
Jamison updated the Captain, but what he had to say was less then encouraging. Someone, or something, down there wanted the Ravens' attention, and had got it.
"Get an assistant on it Will." Blakus told the Tactical Officer, then quickly glanced at Carl before standing up, "We're going down to the surface. Cavit, Sharp, Loire, and Jamison .. You're with me."
Carl watched the Senior staff file into the turbo-lift. Their replacements taking station.
"Ensign Parkin." he said to the woman at the Science station, "Ensure we have a solid lock on everyone in the away-team. I don't want any slip-ups."
"Aye Sir." she said.
Torek stood, walking slowly toward the view-screen. There was nothing to do now but wait for a report from his Exec' on the surface.

Semia Cavit heard her name called as the away team is called, she got up ffrom her station, she became part of the crew under the fact that Andae Blakus saved her life so she followed him from the starbase to the Raven and joined the crew, she still yet had to look into the St James incident but for now she was to serve and stay by Blakus's side, She followed Sharp.Loire, and Jamison to the Transporter pad , Stepping up on it a yoemen handed her , her pink tricorder and hunting knife, he gave his instrictions to the others and then turned to her and looked into her cool grey eyes, "Commander Cavit, you will be with me." , then Blakus paused and looked at the pink tricorder in her hand, "what the ..." She smiled and held it up "You lke it" He poked at it "its ......Pink....." Crane entered the transporter and nodded "commanders" As they stood on the pad she straighed herself out, this was her first away mission in 4 years since he temporaily left Starfleet, "Everyone Ready?" Everyone comfirmed they where ready, and Andae gave the order "Energize" As the cool blue transporter took them she felt excited to be back, when they materialized they ended up on a sandy beach, right near a clearing with tress and bushes , she couldn't see past the tress if there where buildings they where so high

"Sir. Transporter room two confirms first team has materialized on the surface .. Second team transporting now."
"Thank you Ensign." Carl said, still looking at the blue green planet below them.
"SIR .." Parkin said suddenly nervous, "Team two has failed to materialize at the designated co-ordinates .. Scanning the surface now !"
Torek turned to look directly at Erin Parkin. She was a junior Science Officer, and had stood in for the absent Chief since leaving the Star base. But she could feel everyones eyes on her now, waiting for answers. She had re-routed sensors to her station to keep a closer lock on the away teams, but never expected one to go astray.
"Ensign !" Torek said, then changing the tone of his inquiry. 'The last thing the young woman needed was him yelling' he thought, "Take your time Ensign, find them."
It took less than ten seconds, but it must have felt a lot longer to Parkin before she could confirm success.
"Got them Captain ... They have materialized almost sixteen kilometers from the first team. They are on a peninsula jutting into the large bay we spotted."
Carl tapped his Comm badge ..
=^= Transporter Chief .. Can you get a lock on team two ? =^=
=^= I'm trying Captain .. I'm having difficulty getting a positive lock and I'm reluctant to transport with what I do have =^=
"Open a channel to the away team." Carl ordered and received a nod of confirmation.
=^= Raven to Blakus =^=
=^= ..................... =^=
=^= Raven to away teams =^=
Again there was no reply.
"Helm ... Put us in a geostationary orbit above the away teams' location. I don't want to loose our tentative lock on them !"
On the view-screen, the planet below began to slow it's rotation as the Raven moved to a higher orbit and slowed her travel. Less than one minute later the ship was directly above her Officers, seemingly motionless above what a moment ago seemed an idyllic planet ..........

The team had materialised on the skirting edge of a beach under the shade of some trees. Blakus, Sharp, Cavit, Jamison and his security detail and a couple of science officers.
The XO watched Will's retreating back as the latter immediately led his security away to set up the large-radius perimeter. He blinked in confusion once the Security chief passed out of sight over a hedge, on to a grassy plain that sloped up to higher ground. He twisted around and saw the slightly odd coloured blue sea. He turned back around, glanced at Cavit and then looked to another group of trees that concealed whatever was on the other side of them.
Now his initial look of confusion developed into a manifestation of utter bewilderment. For the time being, he disregarded Cavit's attempts to ask him what was wrong, and stepped forward towards the edge of the beach, stooping to the sand and checking it for depth, then walking right to the edge of the beach and trying to get a better perspective on his surroundings. Blakus had to figure out why they hadn't materialised at the beam-down coordinates.
"This isn't our landing site," he observed to Cavit, standing behind him. Blakus supposed the possibility had existed that something sinister would reveal itself before long. He needed to contact the ship; either this was a transporter error or it was the planet that was responsible for scattering them from the destination.
He heard Commander Sharp on his commbadge already, and in listening he delivered to himself another shock. Now communications were out with the ship as well.
"Commander blakus no response from the ship or commander Jamison." Sharp said as he headed towards him.
Blakus nodded. "Keep trying both the ship and the other teams. If we don't hear anything, then we'll use this site as a base camp; I'd like you to set it up, Commander. As well as that also start scanning the surrounding area. We may be out of contact but while we're here we may as well see if our sensor equipment still works."
<Tag Sharp>
The XO watched Sharp go off to set up the base and then turned away, kicking at the ground absently. "Well this is annoying," he said to Semia, "We've been scattered from the beam down coordinates, and we're probably far from the transmission source that Commander Jamison discovered.
"Let's hope he realises that comms are down sooner than later, and that he can make his way back. Sensors would help..." He took out his tricorder and cursed silently when he found that it wasn't working all that well either.
Sharp and company seemed to have found that out too, as Blakus saw how the remaining security officer was gesticulating wildly at the Ops chief, with a tricorder in his hand and saying something he couldn't quite hear. He sighed and looked around, eyes eventually falling on Cavit's pink tricorder. He had an idea. "Do you mind?" he asked pointing to the tricorder in the CNO's hand. He shrugged as he took it, "You never know..."
To his surprise and 'delight', the tricorder turned out to work much better than the standard issue. "What did you have done to it?" he asked jokingly. "Let's see if we can find anything." They headed up to the edge of the beach and started scanning the area inland.
<Tag Cavit>
Making their way back down the beach, Blakus headed over to Commander Sharp. "Report," he ordered. Sharp told him that the base was all but set-up, and that one of the science officers had headed off to explore some of the surroundings.
"Good," said Andae. "We need to find out where we are. We have a tricorder working better than the others, it's not ideal, but it worked enough to find some routes leading inland... We should all explore," Blakus eventually decided, "Sharp, take the other science officer and explore the left route by those tall trees. Me and Cavit will go to the right, where Jamison took his team."

The Raven hung majestically above the southern hemisphere of the blue green, seemingly, idyllic planet below. But things were not going as expected ..
"Do we have a positive lock on them yet ?" Torek asked, keeping the frustration from his voice.
"The Transporter Chief is still having problems Sir." Parkin said from the Science station, "I looks like there's some kind of dampening field or similar. There's no readings to suggest the variation in beam-down locations was manufactured."
"Sir ... All contact has been lost with both teams now." the duty Comm Officer said.
He realized he was running out of options.
"Sir. I should take my men down there, they could be in .. Trouble."
"I think it may well come to that Major." Torek replied to the Marine Officer, then tapped his Comm badge.
=^= Torek to McLean .. Please come to the Bridge Commander =^=
Moments later the Chief Engineer stepped out of the turbo-lift. It wasn't that he was unfamiliar with the Raven's Command center, but rather that he'd much prefer to be in his own element. Engineering suited him just fine, and being ordered to the Bridge usually meant he was going to be doing something he'd prefer to leave to those better suited.
"Captain. Still nothing from the away teams ?" Scott asked, obviously keeping up with events from his office as he approached his Commanding Officer.
"Scott. I'm taking Major LaGrange and a te ......"
"Sorry Captain, but reg ...." Scott interrupted, a millisecond before the Marine could.
"I know the regulations Scott. But there is something wrong on the surface and almost all my Command staff is down there." Carl held up a hand to silence his Officers, "I know this is unorthodox, but we need to find them. I'm leaving the Raven in your hands."
McLean had been required to Command on other occasions. He wasn't over thrilled at the idea, but he also knew that his good friend had made up his mind, and if need be would throw his Engineer, and anyone else voicing their 'opinion' in the Brig to get to the surface.
"I'll transfer Engineering to the Bridge." Scott said.
"Get one of your people to do that, you need to be there." Carl said, pointing at the center seat ... McLean tapped his Comm badge as the Captain arranged a team with LaGrange. As Carl passed the engineer, he felt a cold touch on his shoulder and turned. Scott was holding up a hypo-spray, an Innocent look on his face.
"Sub-dermal transponder." McLean said, shrugging, "Stopped by Medical, you don't think I was going to let you off this ship without 'some' kind of guarantee we could get you back do you. Besides, Vanessa would kill me if you missed her party."
"The ship is yours Commander." Carl said, a wry smile appearing.
~~~~~~~~~~
=^= Transport complete =^=
=^= Thank you Chief .. Ensure a positive lock on the Capta ...... =^=
=^= SIR .. I've lost the lock ! =^=
McLean jumped out of his seat.
=^= You should still be picking up the signal from the implanted transponder .. Scan for that ! =^=
=^= I am doing Sir .. There's nothing to scan for =^= the man replied, a little frustration and annoyance creeping into his voice.
=^= Keep on it =^=
"Lieutenant ... Aim every sensor we have on the surface. I wan ......"
The ship lurched violently to port. it was so unexpected that several people fell to the floor, the inertial dampers not coping with the torque. Scott almost dragged himself to the Command seats, climbing painfully into the center seat. On the view-screen, the stars were spinning wildly, almost too fast for even twenty forth century technology to cope with. For three long minutes McLean was convinced that the ship was going to fall apart, she wasn't built, nothing was built, to withstand these forces. But then the rotation slowed, finally coming to a stop ...
"Where the HELL are we !" Scott said.
~~~~~~~~~~
Carl materialized, phaser in hand. The Marine contingent had climbed onto the transporter pad in compass point stance. Each man or woman having a small arc to cover. The instant the transport was complete, they moved forward, difficult given the circumstances, but effectively covering a three hundred and sixty degree radius.
"Doesn't look much like a beech to me." LaGrange said, eying the thick wooded area they were now standing in.
"Not a deckchair in sight." Carl said, looking into the trees.
"Sir." a Marine Corporal said, "I'm picking up a reading on heading two four nine degrees. Approximately seventeen kilometers."
"Let's go." Carl said. Waiting as the Marines ensured he was out of harms' way with people in front and behind him. he sub-consciously touched his shoulder where the transponder rested just below the surface of his skin. He wondered if it was still working, though considering things, he rather doubted it ..........

As soon as they materialized, Will wasted no time in taking his men out to set up the perimeter. He brought up his tricorder as they began descending a small hill that they had just topped and stopped when he realized that it wasn't working. He quickly tapped his comm badge next.
=^=Jamison to Commander Blakus.=^=
There was no response.
"Back this way." he called to the two men with him as he turned to head back in the direction in which they had came and tried the ship while he ran.
=^=Jamison to Raven=^=
Again, he was met with silence.
When they once again reached the top, Will looked down in the direction in which they had come and saw noone. Not even the beach where they had landed.
"What the hell is going on here?" he asked more to himself as he brought the worthless tricorder up one more time. It still read nothing. No power source from the signal. No other members of the away team. Just a blank screen.
Without a moments hesitation, he made the decision to keep moving the way they had been going.
"But what about the others?" asked the young ensign accompanying him.
"We don't know what's going on back that way." he answered with a nod of his head. "Or what will happen if we return. The rest of the party is apparently no longer down there so our best bet is to find out where they went. Let's go." he ordered as they once again began moving down the other side of the hill. ****************************************************** Without a tricorder, Will and his men had no way of knowing where they were headed or for how long they had traveled. At his best estimate, Will had figured they had been traveling about 2 hours. He had continuously tapped his comm badge in hopes of reaching someone else but was still met with silence the whole journey. They came across an outcrop of boulders and Will called for them to take a break. Lt Delik, a Bajoran officer whom had served with Will for about a year now, offered to scout ahead. Will allowed him to continue but only after he had rested for about 15 minutes also. Will gave Delik about 20 minutes and than he and the ensign that was still with him continued climbing the hill they were on. Just as they reached the top, they spotted Delik running back their way.
"Sir. There appears to be some sort of town just down there at the bottom of this hill." he reported.
"Could you see people? Anyone from the away team?" asked Will.
"No sir. I wasn't close enough. I'm sorry." replied the Lt.
"It's okay. We'll just have to carefully make our way close enough to see what we can find out without getting caught." Will replied. "I find all of this very strange. The last scan I saw before we beamed down, didn't show any towns or life on this planet."
Will stood there a moment lost in thought. "Follow me." he finally said when he reached a decision.
They moved a little ways back down the hill to where they had been resting.
"Nothing else seems to work here, so I want to test our phasers before we get any closer. Hopefully, we won't need them but with the way things are going around here, I want to be ready."
They had set and fired each phaser and were not surprised to find them as dead as the rest of their equipment.
"I guess that helps decide how close we get." Will joked trying to lighten the mood. "Let's move out, fellas."
The climbed back over the hill and began heading down toward the town take precautions not to be seen.

The deeper they travelled in land, the more and more Blakus started to regret splitting up the team. Commander Sharp and the science officer with him had already fallen out of contact, and the only knowledge they had on his position was given by Cavit's quirky tricorder: a fuzzy reading of two lifeforms approximately two kilometres to their left.
They had passed out of the forestry after about an hour and a half's trek. The trees were deciduous, or mainly pine, but surprisingly were not that untamed and wild. It was very hard to tell, but Blakus almost got the impression that they had been cut back, leaving what was perhaps an artificial (if quite naturally-appearing) path through the plantlife.
Now they were on open land, a grassy slope, rising up to the highest point, a knoll with a scattering of rocks. They stopped by another grouping of rocks about halfway up the slope, where the relief of the knoll melded with that of another rise off to their right. Blakus was dejected as he sat down on one of the rough surfaces. They were getting nowhere in their search, if Jamison had stopped and gone to head back then he would have done so at the start, which meant that the XO and CNO would have encountered him by now.
As it was, they were chasing after a group who were likely travelling at the same pace as them, and still not on the limited tricorder's sensors.
Andae got a yearning for food, or rations of some type at least. They hadn't been expecting to need such things on this away mission, but the break had turned his mind to such things he usually associated with a period of rest. He examined the ground and their surroundings again. He looked towards the forests, now below them and having grown more distant, and felt a slight whip of a wind through his hair; that of an onshore sea breeze. He winced in the wind.
"You know," he said to Cavit, "This is definitely one of this world's milder temperate zones. If we assume an Earth-like biome, then we're above the tropics, high latitude. Our beam-down site was supposed to be close to the planetary equator." He roughly chucked a stone to the ground in sorry contemplation.
A tricorder beep broke him from his self-pity. He looked around for Cavit's pink scanner, it had fallen into the long grass behind one of the rocks. It beeped again as he picked it up; again the reading was fuzzy, but there was something there. Sharp's group were now barely registering, right on the reduced sensor range apparently. But this new signal was much closer, ahead and to their right with respect to the direction they'd been travelling.
Blakus had to wonder why it hadn't been there as soon as it got into tricorder range.
The two of them rose instantly, heading for the top of the rise and once there looking down the drop in the land to the right. "Still on your tricorder," Blakus commented, but still could not see the reading visually. Then it appeared quite suddenly from behind a collection of shrubbery, a black uniformed humanoid.. Starfleet. At first expecting it to be one of Jamison's party, Blakus was momentarily surprised to find that it was the science officer, initially sent out for scouting. He waved to the officer, who, as soon as she saw them, ran up the knoll quickly.
"Sirs," she said, "It's good to see you both, I've been searching for a way back to the beach a long time." Blakus frowned which allowed the science lieutenant to explain. "There is no way back, once you travel any distance things become.. chaotic, confused. Paths seem to change."
Blakus raised both eyebrows, "We'll come back to this, Lieutenant. Have you seen any sign of Commander Jamison?"
"No, sir. But there was another thing. I've seen structures."
"Structures? Where?" Blakus asked.
"A kilometre or more away to the right, whether they'll still be there next time is another question. They overlook a valley, no other buildings are around them, it's just one giant interlinked structure. White walled, no doors but some portals. It seems possible that it could've been built by humanoids."
"So no other signs of people?"
"None," she shook her head.
The XO scanned the horizon, now opened up for them somewhat atop this knoll. He saw nothing but wild grass plains interspersed with dark patches of trees and shrubs, and the sea and the forest behind them. Hills hid the location of the structure that the Lieutenant spoke of.
"Ok, let's have a look." Blakus decided. "Cavit, your tricorder again." He was passed the device once more and he scanned for Sharp. Yes, still there... "Let me try a trick I learnt in a specialist engineering course at the academy..."
Blakus reprogrammed the tricorder to transmit a message to Sharp's group, relying on the COO's tricorder at least functioning, if not picking anything up.
Commander Sharp, Blakus here. We have located our scout volunteer, she has discovered a structure. Still no sign of Jamison. We are investigating. If you discover any signs of habitation yourself, under 'no' circumstances must you attempt to communicate with them. We still don't know what's going on here...
<Tag Sharp>
The structure was present, and Blakus still found himself off-guard that the science Lieutenant was so surprised. "I can't believe it," he heard her murmur. It made little sense for her expectation to be opposite to what was commonly accepted. In the XO's experience, land relief, no matter what wonderful world it was situated on, did not shift and change like the wind. And so far, for him at least, it was not.
They rounded a corner, coming out of a glade in the shadow of some thick trees, to see one end of the smooth, white building. It was serene in its simplicity, and modest, quite pleasing to the eye and not a sore stand-out amongst the greenery. Yet there was something, Blakus realised as they drew as close as they dared, that did not feel right to him. The place gave him a slight chill, as if its presence was almost too alien, and the walls forbade a wayward thought to the obscene and extravagant.
"Readings?" he asked quietly. Cavit shook her head and showed him the tricorder's scan results. The uncertain, distorted reading told them all that they saw. A wall of one face of the large structure, no lifeforms. "The building would seem to suggest.. habitation," he said obviously, shrugging. "Let's pull back."
They retreated to a distance of a few tens of metres, out of sight of the blanked-out portal that punctured the nearest side of the silent construction.
After minutes of waiting, watching and scanning, trying to find clues, Blakus spoke, "Cavit, stay in the shrubbery, head around to the other side of the buildings. It's not a short walk, so be cautious and go slowly. See what you can find. If you see anything that moves, or anybody, you must not attempt to communicate."
<Tag Cavit>
Another fifteen minutes passed by, in which time Blakus had grown to feel blind without the only working tricorder. He'd sat himself against the rock, facing away from the collection of buildings with his head rested back. The science lieutenant remained silent. He still had all of his normal senses though, and that's why he reacted with such a start when he heard a loud scream, he was only frustrated because he could not identify the person behind the scream.

Aboard Raven:=^= Vanessa McLean to Da ... Commander McLean =^=
Scott was rapidly developing a massive headache. he had hit his head when the Raven was flung wherever the hell they were now. He had already ordered medical staff to the Bridge to tend to the injured, and knew his Daughter was with the babysitter in their quarters. So the Comm almost stopped his heart..
=^= Comman .. Vanessa .. We're busy .. Are you OK ? =^=
=^= My arm hurts .. Ally is on the floor .. She's not waking up Daddy =^=
Scott could hear his Daughter trying so hard to hold back the sobbing, but she was failing. Ally was the Daughter of one of the Science Staff, and had been looking after Vanessa when he was on duty. But now she was hurt, his daughter was alone and afraid, and 'HE' was running the ship ! Even he knew that leaving the Bridge now would be tantamount to desertion ...
=^= Sweetheart .. Medical are on their way .. I can't get there righ ...... =^=
=^= I know Daddy .. I'm looking after Ally like you showed me .. It's OK .. I'll talk to you in a little bit .. I love you Daddy =^=
The Comm went dead, and Scott found he needed all his willpower not to let his feeling show or his desire to run to his little girl ... But her Comm was replaced by at least ten others, asking for information, details, anything, that could explain why they were no longer in orbit around one of the most serene planets found in the known universe so far ....... ~~~~~~~~~~On the surface:"Sir ... This is getting ridiculous ... There's no way we are going to simply walk our way out of this forest." La Grange said, sweat pouring from him, "Nothing works, or I would have simply had my men cut a path using their phaser-rifles." "How far have we made ?" Torek asked, wiping sweat from his eyes. Well, going off conventional methods of measurement in our given situation ..." La Grange replied, glancing through the undergrowth, "I would say we have made no more that three kilometers." Carl was about to yell out loud at their lack of progress, but La Grange put a finger to his lips, silencing the reply that he surely expected to explode from his CO, "With all due respect Captain .. We've no Comms, Tricorders are inoperable or sporadic. There is no way of knowing whats behind the next tree, let alone the next kilometer. So digression would be a prudent choice of action." "Sirs .." the Marine Corporal said, "We're in the southern hemisphere of this planet, so using the moss as a direction indicator. I think if we head maybe thirty degrees north we should find it easier to traverse the distance ?" he finished, making it a question. Carl agreed. "OK ... I think the Corporal has a good idea. We can head north west for say three hours. If we find anything, all well and good. If not, we divert another thirty degrees." La Grange agreed. "Take point Corporal." he ordered instantly, and the relentless trudge through the forest continued .......... < tag : All ... C'mon ... Post your individual problems in finding your Colleagues > ;D

Sharp looks at the tri corder and notice it has gone dead and puts it away. "OK everyone i want you to find something and use it as a weapon we have lost all communication with everyone and i am declaring this a hostile planet. As Sharp works on a bow and arrow Sharp hears someone calling his name. Sharp grabs his head and says "not again".
After the away team finishes making their weapons they star to explore more of the area to find out whats going on and Sharp hears more voices in his head. After a few more miles They see movement near the tree line Sharp Fires an arrow at the movement.

OOC:
I'll let that be the Captains group seeing as I have reached a settlement.
IC:
Grateful for the numerous outcroppings, Jamison and his men were able to make their way down the mountain side to spot about 100 meters behind the tallest structure without being spotted.
"What now, sir?" asked Ensign Murray.
"Well. Since Commander Blakus said no contact, for now, we observe. And remember." he added. "Seeing as our tricorders are currently useless, it will be up to use to report any useful findings we may see."
As they watched the settlers move about their "town", Will noticed that there seemed to be at least one building that never got a visitor.
"I noticed that as well, sir." responded Lt Delik when Will pointed it out.
With 20 minutes and a little back tracking, the 3 Starfleet officers were able to make their way around to the back of that structure. They sat in their hiding spot and watched it for another 20 minutes insuring that no one entered. When Will was satisfied that they were safe, they began making their way to the entrance that they had spotted in the rear. Once inside, they began looking around for any clue that might be helpful.
Where was that signal coming from? thought Will. Who are these people and why didn't the Raven's sensors detect them?
These were just a few thoughts going through his mind when Murray returned from another room.
"Sirs." he began in a whisper as to not be heard. "I think I found what might be a galley."
"Good." replied Will as his stomach growled. realizing how long it had been since their last meal, he turned to the young ensign. "See if theirs anything that looks like it might be edible for us and gather just a little. We don't want anyone noticing the missing food."
"Aye, sir." he said excitedly before turning a disappearing through the doorway once again.
When Murray returned, they made their way back up the mountain to their spot. They sat quietly for a few moments, filling their stomachs. Than Will looked at the 2 men.
"Thoughts, gentlemen?" he asked.

It was getting late in the day when Torek and his group found the structures.
Buildings really, rather than structure in the true sense of the word ... They had pushed hard for the last few kilometers, and everyone was grateful, though a little wary, when the vegetation began to thin out enough so they could see more than a few meters ahead.
Major LaGrange slowed their progress to a dead slow crawl as they reached the edge of the forest. There were several buildings here, non, it was noted, that had shown up on the scans from Raven. But the more surprising thing was the fact the 'town' was populated.
Taking into account the planet had an Earth-type atmosphere, it wasn't surprising that the inhabitants would be Humanoid in appearance. They seemed similar in height, build, coloring, to Humans. Nothing in their dress code seemed to indicate anyone of higher or lesser importance than the next person. In fact, unless pushed for details, Carl would have said both men and women were dressed identically. His mind racing to make sense of what they had come across, he wasn't prepared for the next comment ..
"Major ... Off to the left, approx ten o'clock." one of the Marines said, "Isn't that a Star Fleet uniform !"
Carl's head spun to look in the direction indicated, and sure enough, three uniforms could be seen. There was too much distance to signal vocally, and it stood to reason that anyone who could hide a town, and god knows what else, from a star ship, would pick up any Comm signal instantly ..
There was nothing to do for the moment but watch the three men enter the structure ..........

With the slightest air of desperation, Andae tried his standard, and last he checked, disfunctioning tricorder to see what was going on on the other side of the interlinked complex. It was a long way 'round, forty metres Blakus predicted, so he couldn't very well pop his head around there to have a look.
As expected, the tricorder was dead, just as it had been a few hours ago. The screen was blank, and not even the power light was functioning anymore... it was comprehensively disabled.
Pushing aside the running thoughts he was having on why the tricorder had changed from being useless but powered, to useless and unpowered, Andae nodded to the science officer and made to stand up. There was some intelligence at work here, but for now his priority was to assure himself over the safety of the Raven's new CNO.
"Shall I head around on the right-hand side, sir?" asked the science officer.
"No," he told her. "We need to stay together, I've already broke up this team twice, all that's resulted in is loss of contact. The last thing we need is three individuals having lost each other around this building."
They headed around together, sticking to the bank of shrubbery that dropped away on the left hand side. On their right was a small lawn, running the length of this side of the complex. The open space made Blakus feel uncomfortable.
Having made the journey in good time, Blakus and the science officer sat crouched behind a hedge. Beyond it another open expanse of green grass, bordered by another line of wild looking shrubbery, that seemed to dictate the border of the complex's grounds. Past it, the land dropped away still further, into even more wild, faded green and bracked brown pastures. Before that however was another gathering of trees that obscured some of the view. Commander Cavit was standing at the border of these, seemingly staring intently above them.
With relief, Blakus crouch-ran over to her position, asking for a report once he was in normal talking distance. Semia indicated she'd heard the scream from somewhere in the forest.
"It sounded humanoid.." Blakus observed, "But unbridled, quite wild in fact." He searched the wood visually, trying to see through the heavy dark provided by the canopies of the statuesque pines. "We head into the forest." He commanded, "The possibility of finding a person can only mean progress, and we're not getting anywhere at the moment."
He pushed into the dark oppression of the trees, sensing that the CNO and science officer were reluctantly following behind him. He looked back, past the two of them, at the partially visible white building, rapidly fading from sight. "We don't venture too far from the structure," he decided. "We need a reference point and if you're right," he looked at the science officer, "We don't want the landscape changing beneath us."

Aboard Raven:
"I want to know where we are and where that planet is !" Scott said, unable to take his mind off his Daughter.
"Working on it Commander .. Sir." Parkin replied.
Scott looked at the view-screen. The stars were unfamiliar, but that wasn't too surprising. He spent ninety five percent of his time decks below the Bridge, and window space was non-existent.
Suddenly every alarm system began to make itself known ... Klaxon's went off all over the ship, almost deafening the Bridge crew.
"Shut those off." McLean yelled, "What the 'HELL' is going on ?" he finished, running to the Engineering console. The warp core was shutting down .. The fall-out from this happening was way too serious to even contemplate.
"We're loosing power .. Down to fifty three percent now !"
Scott couldn't work from the Bridge. He made a snap decision.
"Lieutenant ... What's your name ?" McLean said waiting for the instant reply before continuing, "Lieutenant Parkin .. OK .. You have the Conn .. I'll be in Engineering if needed. But please don't need me. I have the ships' heart to see to !"
Erin was completely silent. Dumbstruck, as the Ranking Officer ran from the Bridge of the biggest ship she had served on, let alone had cause to Command ... She looked round at the people around her, wondering how half a dozen 'children' could end up with almost five hundred million tonnes of ship to Command ...
"Where ... Whats the status of our systems ?" the twenty two year old asked nervously.
"We have no drive systems. Shields inoperative, as are weapons .. Life support is at ninety three percent and holding, for the moment. As for astrometrics ... We're lost."
Erin looked at the Command seats, then chose to stand. 'Hell i cant sit there' she thought. She tapped the Comm control.
=^= Par ... Bridge to Engineering =^=
=^= What do you want Lieutenant ? =^= McLean replied, in no mood for chatter.
=^= Can we erm get underway ? =^=
=^= You have one quarter impulse power for now .. I'm using all our reserve to keep people alive Lieutenant .. I'd suggest you aim the ship toward the center of this system and hope .. Because sitting on your hands is NOT going to do anyone any good .. Undersood ! =^=
Parkin stood in silence for long moments as the Comm closed abruptly .. The thought of traversing a complete system at that speed was nerve-wracking. It would take even a ship this size, years to traverse those distances ...........
