On the Surface:
"Oh much much more Commander." Gal said, calming himself with effort then sitting forward in his seat as if about to impart a secret, "We intend to decimate the planet. A much deserved fate for a species of murdering killers, and one I fully intend being on board to witness myself."
David sat in silence, watching the man, the man who in his opinion was completely insane ... He could tell Sandra was using all her self-control not to show her current state. She knew that their lives would end in the next few moments. There was no doubt that Zal'nar would carry out his orders !
On the Olympia:
"Weapons ready Sir." Carron confirmed, his voice shaking slightly.
"Lock on to the transponder location."
"Weapons locked .... Sir .... You can't be considering fir ......"
"I am not 'considering' firing Mister Carron. I am following a direct order. So please attend to your station." Zal'nar said, his voice devoid of all emotion. But before he could continue, Carron interrupted him ..
"Two vessels on approach vectors !"
=^= Federation vessel .. You are ordered to stand down all weapons and depart orbit immediately .. Failure to comply will result in our opening fire on your ship ! =^=
"They are taking up attack formation Sir ... They are bringing weapons on-line." Carron informed Zal'nar, who watched the approaching ships on the view screen with interest. 'Would they fire ?' he asked himself, and would he too fire on his superior ?.
On the surface:
Gal watched the Star fleet Officer with an expression bordering on humorous, and David noticed ..
"Something amusing you ?"
"Amusing .... No. But i do think you are under the impression you have the upper hand." Gal said, glancing at a small monitor built into the table before looking back at Tan, "About now your ship is being secured against the 'attack' you are planning .. I must say, it never occurred to me that you would be willing to give up your life, and that of your crew, so easily."
David looked at Sandra, her expression had changed from one of resignation, to one of determination. It was all David needed. He looked Gal in the eye, leaning forward for effect ..
"You think for one second I'm going to allow you to leave this room, let alone the surface. Believe me, whatever you have up there will not prevent the Olympia firing on this position, regardless of my being present ... So ... Your move !"
Tan sat back, feigning the relaxed posture he was far from feeling ..........

E’Liana found herself back in Sickbay shortly followed by her new patient. For a moment she wondered what had happened in the interim period between sending her first patient on and her arrival, as the atmosphere seemed decidedly thick. She frowned to herself as she saw the Nurse handling the Vulcan’s injuries – not that she thought her incompetent, but what was the point of having another Doctor onboard if she didn’t do any bloody work?
She turned to her patient on the bed and began a full body scan. He was still unconscious and E’Liana didn’t want him wakening too soon. She had no idea how bad his injuries were. She could see the burns to his leg and the metal, obviously, but didn’t want to risk treating those when there could be a more serious underlying problem.
E’Liana then set up the computer to scan a sample of his blood and compare it to the stores onboard to see if he was compatible to any. That would take a while. She only hoped it wouldn’t be too long.
As the scanner worked, the Doctor looked up in surprise at the results. She reached for the medical tricorder she had used on him only minutes ago and there were significant differences. Yes, they were minute but any change would be significant…
“He’s healing himself” She muttered.
Confused at what the results were telling her, E’Liana looked over at the computer screen with the pertinent data regarding his physiology. It was depressingly limited. ~No help there then~ she thought to herself.
She scanned for other injuries that the Vulcan had not picked up and she could tell that her patient was in a bad way. He had broken several ribs and lacerated an organ which, whilst she couldn’t quite tell what it was, could see it was of importance. His ‘heart’ rate was very low indeed.
A couple more minutes passed and the patient was indeed healing his own body. She wondered if this was some sort of self-induced coma, but the questions would have to wait. No matter how good the self-healing process, it should not have to work alone, especially when there was a mass of metal in the way.
E’Liana set about scrubbing up for minor surgery, slowly and agonisingly taking out the metal in his left shoulder. There was bleeding, obviously, but they had no way of knowing yet what blood he could be compatible to – if any.
The biggest piece now removed, she focused on the metal shards. If these were left they could make him even worse as the body attempts to heal around him.
~*~
An hour later and the shards were removed and the burns healed with the ever-handy dermal regenerator, E’Liana could do nothing but sit and wait. The computer bleeped and it had thankfully found a suitable blood donor onboard. Bolian. Boy, was that Engineer going to be happy that he’d put himself on the list. Now only time would tell if her patient could heal himself…

Crystal stumbled aboard the shuttle with tears streaming from her eyes and a burning sensation in her throat. She'd gotten very lucky. She was still on her feet. The hijackers had given up hunting for her and had instead flooded various parts of the ship with a noxious combination of some sort of tear gas and some knock out drug. No doubt her tricorder had recorded what it was but Crystal had not managed to clear her eyes long enough to make out the screen. She sealed the shuttle door isolating it from the ship's environment and then fumbled for the emergency medkit. There wasn't much here and she was in no fit state to use most of it any way but she just needed to keep going. She gave herself a shot of synthetic adrenalin hoping to counteract the anasthetic long enough to launch the shuttle and get out of here.
The Olympia's primary was not in very good shape, the warp engines were locked out as were the weapons array and the shields. She'd also gotten to the gravity generators and varius other subsidery systems hopefully her handwork would hold long enough for someone to locate the Olympia.
Crystal gave a hacking cough as she stumbled over to the pilot's seat. She hadn't flown a shuttle in a while but she hoped she hadn't forgotten how. She focussed on the console in front of her. She could feel her heart racing, maybe she had done the wrong thing maybe it was just spreading the anesthetic through her system faster. She left a trail of algae cross the console as she initiated launch proceedures. She set the controls to travel back to starbase unless they located a closer federation ship in which case vector to approach.
The space doors opened and the shuttle exited. Crystal allowed herself a smile. She had escaped. Now it was a matter of doing what she could to get help. She didn't know what was in the gas she had inhaled, she didn't know how long she had. She knew it was hard to focus.
"Computer record message: This is Commander First Class Crystal Rose First Officer of the USS Olympia to any Federation starship. I need help." She had to stop speaking then as another wave of coughing took her. she leaned against the console gasping air.
"I was abducted along with part of the Olympia on Stardate 2395.0822, I managed to escape the hijackers but am in need of medical help." She fell into another wave of coughing. It was so hard to keep her eyes open.
"Computer end recording. Transmit on loop on federation fequencies." She leaned forward to put her head on the console and rest. She was dimly aware that this mightly be the last thing she thought. Crystal blacked out even as another tear gas related coughing fit racked her body. She was oblivious to the fact that the layer of Veraxian algae on her skin and her tricorder's scrambling signiture were still masking her life signs.

Remar shifted slightly, trying to ease the discomfort of the healing process. He had never had broken ribs before, nor had he ever broken any other bones in his body. As such, the bone knitter was a new experience for him. The right side of his chest was tingling and felt warm. It was decidedly...odd. As he was lying there, a small squad of medical personel came in with a stretcher, Commander BeTor in the lead. On the stretcher was Minister Efoc. He was looking a little better than he had during the trip to the Olympia, but he was still unconscious. He was gently moved onto the central biobed and Dr. BeTor and the others got to work. Remar was ignored while all this was going on, except for one glance that the Klingon Dr. BeTor sent his way. She seemed to be curious and annoyed at the same time.
Remar could see next to nothing of what was going on, so he elected to place himself in a light Vulcan trance. It would allow him to ignore the discomfort of the bone knitter and move more of his resources to healing his injuries. The noises of Sickbay faded away as his concentration increased.
A short time later, Remar came out of his trance. He was feeling much better and his side had stopped troubling him so much. He looked over to where the Minister was. Dr. BeTor was the only person standing there. The Minister was still unconscious and Dr. BeTor was frowning at the medical readouts flashing before her. He was suddenly distracted as Nurse Maxwell came into view beside his bed. "Well, it's been an hour lieutenant. Let's see how you're doing."
She was already running a medical tricorder over him as she spoke, and seemed pleased with the results. "Well, it seems that your repairs are complete" she said, smiling. She took a look at the main medical screen over his biobed to see how the full body scan had went. "Your scan has revaled nothing unusual as well. However, I have to have the results reviewed."
The head nurse turned and walked over to where Commander BeTor was standing, still frowning at the results of her readouts regarding Minister Efoc. Maxwell tapped the Klingon gently on the arm and spoke to her briefly. BeTor glanced around Sickbay, apparently looking for something and irritated that she couldn't find it, then quickly walked back towards Remar.
"Well lieutenant," BeTor said, "My head nurse here says that you have responded well to treatment and should be returned to limited duty. What do you think of that?"
Remar thought for a moment. "What does limited duty mean?"
"No away team missions" the doctor said flatly.
"I find it unlikely that the Commodore will be sending me on an away mission any time soon" Remar said. The last one he had been on had ended in relative disaster. "What is the condition of Minister Efoc?"

"... So ... Your move !"
David sat back in his seat. He played poker, and in some circles was rated on a par with Carl on the Raven, so he knew his 'poker face' was solid. But that didn't always work when going against a complete mad man !
Gal watched him closely, but David noticed he was looking at Sandra too, and she was worried. Maybe that was what forced Gal to speak.
"There are two ships approaching the Olympia Commander. They have orders to destroy your ship should she attempt to open fire on the surface."
"Well I guess it's all down to 'who' calls 'who' ... Isn't it." Tan said casually, "By now, I imagine the Olympia has a weapons lock on my location. I seriously doubt your ships could prevent a substantial portion of this area vanishing from existence, you along with it."
Gal looked at one of the men with him, who spoke quietly into a communicator. Seconds later he nodded silently to his boss.
"It seems you have me at a disadvantage Commander." Gal said, casually getting up from his seat, "But you don't have the facts. Yes, I will be above the planet when we rid the universe of those parasites, and yes, I will be thankful they are gone. I want to ask you to allow me to do that. This is not your fight Commander. It is not the Federations fight."
"Sir, the ships are waiting for permission to open fire." Gal looked at Tan, raising his eyebrows as if awaiting an answer. but getting none turned back to the man who had spoken.
"Proceed ... Transport." Gal said, grinning as he disappeared from view. Before Tan could get up, the guard had passed on the order to fire. David hit him anyway, hard !
Sandra Bewick touched behind her ear and spoke quickly ..
=^= Away team to Olympia =^=
=^= We're coming under fire Lieutenant .. We didn't receive your 'fire' order so engaged the two ships attacking us .. Is Commander Tan with you ? =^=
=^= Belay previous order to fire on my location .. Concentrate on the ships .. Gal has beamed out .. Possibly up to one of those ships .. They must not leave orbit .. Understood =^=
=^= Aye Sir .. Understood =^=
~~~~~~~~~~
Tan paced the room for what seemed hours, but in reality was less than five minutes, before the Comm activated ..
=^= Carron to Commander Tan .. We have one vessel destroyed one incapacitated .. They are going nowhere .. We're beaming you up now =^=
David felt the beam grab him before he could reply, seconds later he was back on the Olympias' tertiary section and running to the battle bridge.
" ... eaving orbit !"
"What was that ?" Tan asked, entering the bridge.
"Sir. There's a ship leaving orbit on the far side of the planet. An old Klingon bird of prey. Shall I initiate a pursuit course ?"
"That would be a good idea Mister Carron yes !" David said, dropping into the Command seat. Sandra Bewick took the Exec' seat as the Olympia's tertiary section jumped from her geo-stationary orbit to pursuit in a fraction of a second ..........
Second Year Cadet Jedda Rose
"The shuttle is change vector to approach us, sir." Jedda said. It wasn't technically her job to note this. She was also noting that there were no life signs aboard... well... maybe... there was something but it wasn't strong and it was very hard to get a lock on.
"Shuttle coming to relative rest in tractor range. Bringing it one board now." Jedda only dimly heard the tactical officer talking. Her heart was pounding so loudly that she thought everyone on the bridge could hear it. A medical team were sent to the shuttle bay. Jedda could feel tears starting to form in her eyes.
"Permission to go see if Cryst... I mean Commander Rose is all right." Jedda stammered her voice breaking. Admiral Smith obviously realised that she would be no use on the bridge until she found out as he let her go telling her to report back asap.
Jedda threw herself into the turbolift and soon reached the shuttlebay. She could see medical staff but no Crystal her stomach started to drop further.
Formality was forgotten as she asked the doctor in charge. "What's happening? Is Crys all right?"
Irritated that she couldn’t find her supposed second-in-command, E’Liana turned to her patient who was looking enquiringly at her:
"What does limited duty mean?"
E’Liana sighed inwardly. She always hated telling people this. "No away team missions". She bristled slightly, waiting for the tirade of abuse that would most probably come.
To her surprise, Remar merely cocked an eyebrow. "I find it unlikely that the Commodore will be sending me on an away mission any time soon.” She should’ve known better than to expect anything less than logic from a Vulcan. He moved swiftly on. "What is the condition of Minister Efoc?"
“I’m afraid I cannot tell you at the present time. His condition is…inconclusive. Odd, I know, but we need to wait and see what his body is doing to heal itself. I don’t want to make anything worse by trying to help. I’m sorry Lieutenant. I will keep you informed.” She nodded politely to Remar, as she caught Nurse Maxwell’s eye over his shoulder.
E’Liana walked towards her. “What’s wrong?”
“We’re needed down in the shuttlebay. Commander Rose…is…onboard.” The Nurse looked slightly panicked, her eyes flitting around the room, presumably looking for Reilly. Who was nowhere to be seen.
“Well lets go.” Replied E’Liana. She swiftly made her way with the Nurse, leaving Hall in charge of Sickbay. As they jogged down to the turbolift, E’Liana wondered if it was always like this on the Olympia…
The doors to the shuttlebay opened and E’Liana bristled immediately. Reilly was already there. Glaring, E’Liana made her way to the shuttle, tempted to simply drag Reilly away from the shuttle and have a ‘discussion’ with her. Breathing slowly, Dr BeTor forced herself to be calm. ~Don’t forget the oath you took at medical school…~ she reminded herself, and walked towards the scene.
Ignoring Dr Reilly’s existence, E’Liana called out to no one in particular. “Status of the patient”. Reilly answered, not looking at BeTor. “The patient is in a stable condition, having inhaled some sort of gas, possibly tear gas if we deduce from the cough and condition of the eyes. We shall need to get her to sickbay.”
E’Liana nodded, moving forward to help the woman get up, as Reilly stood back. As she was helping Commander Rose, E’Liana heard the shuttlebay doors open and hurried footsteps. A young woman approached, clearly close to tears but doing what she could to stay in control. Hesitating slightly when she saw both BeTor and Reilly, she went to Reilly and asked: "What's happening? Is Crys all right?"
The look on Reilly’s face was enough for E’Liana to wish she had given in to earlier temptation, as she watched Reilly tell the younger woman of her condition.
Commander Rose smiled faintly at the younger woman as they went past, and E’Liana received a puzzled look. “I am taking her to Sickbay. You can come if you like, but in about half an hour, alright?” She tried to smile kindly at the woman, but she hadn’t been having a good day, so was aware that it probably didn’t look quite right…
"Time to intercept ?" David asked.
"Seven minutes nineteen seconds we'll be in weapons range."
"Bring all weapons on-line ... The second we have a confirmed lock I want that ship disabled !"
"How the hell in a Bird of Prey making that speed ?"Carron asked, puzzled.
"It must have had extensive modifications, and if thats the case what can we expect it we come under fire. It's a given that if they have upgraded the hull, shields and inertial systems, they will have made changes to the weapons' systems too." Zal'nor said from the Engineering station.
"Agreed." Carron said.
There was no way Tan could allow Gal to reach Pelgram .... He never thought he'd be faced with this decision, but apparently, it was here, and he had to deal with it. Looking around the Bridge, he was confident everyone would agree with his decision ...
"Increase speed." Tan ordered.
"Sir." Ensign Carron said urgently, "I've scanned that ship. They out-gun us six to one ..... There's no way we can stop them without pretty much destroying ourselves in the pro ... cess."
The Bridge was totally silent as Carron's words sank in ..........
With both Remar and Crystal now back on board the secondary section of the Olympia, Steve could now concentrate on getting back the missing part of his ship. There was only so much sitting around he could do until his officers came back, so he decided to take a trip down to Sickbay, where they both where.
When Steve left the Bridge, he thought about stopping of at his quarters to change his rank pip to make sure he didn't forget to later. But no sooner had he made that thought then he dismissed it. Aside from him, nobody else on ship knew of the promotion, so there was no need to change the pips over just yet. And even so, if the unthinkable happened, and they weren't able to recover the stolen piece of the Olympia, Steve could well be demoted back to Commodore again....so it's for the best that he stay as he is right now.
Upon entering Sickbay, it seemed quite busy. He quickly noticed Crystal, Remar and another person either sitting or lying on the biobeds. "Remar, Crystal...it's good to see you. I am glad you are both safe."
He walked up to Crystal. "What happened to you?" He asked. "Im sorry to do this so soon, but do either of you have any more information about what's going on that can help our situation?"
The Vulcan glanced over upon hearing the main door to Sickbay open and close. Surprisingly, Commodore Smith had just entered. Remar couldn't recall a time that he hadn't seen the Commodore on the bridge. Smith quickly walked over to where he and Commander Rose were. "Remar, Crystal...it's good to see you. I am glad you are both safe.""What happened to you?" He asked. "Im sorry to do this so soon, but do either of you have any more information about what's going on that can help our situation?"
Crystal opened her mouth to respond, but was suddenly overcome by a wracking cough that seemed about to tear her lungs directly out of her chest. Nurse Maxwell came over and helped Crystal sit up, scanned her with a medical tricorder, then administered a fast hypospray. "Give it a minute to get into her system" the head nurse said. Maxwell continued to hover nearby in case she was needed.
Smith nodded and turned to Remar. "What do you have to report?" Smith inquired.
"Sir" Remar said, "While on the planet, I completed an analysis of possible hiding places for something as large as the Olympia in this system. That information is still aboard the Fraser as far as I know. As for the attack on the surface, it would appear that the threat to the Pelgram delegate elect is multi-directional. That was a very direct attempt to take Minister Efoc's life. Assuming that someone did steal the Olympia to kill Minister Efoc and his family, there is no logic to the attack on the surface. The scale of that attack was too small."
Smith nodded thoughtfully. "True. Unless there were more attacks on the surface that we don't know about."
"Yes Commodore" the navigation officer agreed. "And the Pelgrams might not be interested in telling us of those as that kind of internal dissent my derail their attempts to join the Federation." Remar thought for a moment. "If there were more attacks, that would indicate that there are a large number of beings attempting to destabilize Pelgram. There have been small scale attacks on the surface to eliminate Minister Efoc, and a large scale effort to steal the Olympia, presumably to do the same." Remar stopped again. "There is one thing I do not understand sir"
"What's that?" Smith replied.
"Assuming that Bezel 4 is responsible for all of this, what is their reason? It seems an awful lot of trouble to go to to stop Pelgram from joining the Federation. Assuming that Pelgram is accepted, they will be bound by the Prime Directive as we are" Remar said. "In many ways, being a member of the Federation is extremely restrictive. Pelgram would be able to do very little to Bezel if it were a member of the Federation."
"Yes lieutenant" Smith said patiently, "but perhaps Bezel is planning an attack of their own very soon. If Pelgram were a Federation member, we would respond to any attack. Bezel seems to lack their own deep space ships, but they seem able to steal ours. Perhaps the Olympia isn't the only ship that they have appropriated."
Remar considered that. "Yes sir. In that case we could be facing a large number of ships, not just the Olympia primary hull." Remar hesitated again. "If they have more than one ship, it still is not logical that they are only going after the Pelgram designate elect and family. It's a waste of resources to use a large number of ships for such a small target."
The Commodore nodded again. "Yes, it would seem that the Starfleet Commander who passed information to us either neglected to tell us the full extent of the problem, or didn't know himself."
The Vulcan nodded. "It seems that we could be facing a large number of ships. We need the Olympia primary hull back."
Both Remar and Smith looked over at Commander Rose.
Crystal Rose, Sickbay Crystal was dreaming, she was back on the Olympia and had see Jedda. the chances of that were... well, if she wasn't dreaming she would probably be able to calculate what the chances actually were. She closed her eyes dreaming once again. It was better than registering that whatever she had inhaled was probably slowly killing her. She opened her eyes. If she was dreaming she ached, especially her ribs. She wasn't dreaming. She had made it back aboard the Olympia. Crystal broke into a smile and then sat up too quickly for her battered system to cope with, dizzily she lay down and then made another attempt to get into a seated position. As she did so she noticed Commodore Smith come in. "Remar, Crystal...it's good to see you. I am glad you are both safe."
He walked up to Crystal. "What happened to you?" He asked. "Im sorry to do this so soon, but do either of you have any more information about what's going on that can help our situation?" Crystal tried to respond but found herself racked with another bout of coughing and then fussed over by a medic. When her lungs had finally decided that they were going to stay inside her rib cage Crystal caught the tail end of the Remar's comments. "Yes, it would seem that the Starfleet Commander who passed information to us either neglected to tell us the full extent of the problem, or didn't know himself."
The Vulcan nodded. "It seems that we could be facing a large number of ships. We need the Olympia primary hull back."That Crystal agreed with. "I don't exactly know where the primary hull is, sir, but the shuttle will." Crystal slid slowly off the biobed and was relieved to find stand did not provoke a further round of dizziness or coughing. "I decided to catch a nap in my quarters before going on shoreleave and when I woke I found the Olympia had left space dock. There were 22 other life signs aboard her but they apparently simply assumed that the whole crew was ashore." Crystal paused trying to order her thoughts. In the end she span the tale as quickly as she could. "I locked out the warp engines, weapons, shields, gravity generators and a few other secondary systems. I don't know how long the lock-outs will hold though I had to improvise." Tag: Smith / Remar "Permission to return to duty, Sir?" Crystal asked, hoping she'd been medically cleared. She couldn't be that sick still, could she?. Tag: Doc
The seven hundred thousand tonnes of the tertiary section closed steadily on the Klingon vessel.
"How the hell have they managed to make so many modifications. I'm surprised they're not breaking apart." Tan mused.
"Well the Klingon's were never big on creature comforts." Sandra said from Opps, "It looks like they have removed pretty much all the living quarters to re fit with torpedo launchers. This ship was meant for one thing, and one thing only !"
It didn't need pointing out, but David had to say it.
"We will need to stop that ship."
Everyone knew it, and remained silent as Tan watched the image of space on screen. There was no need to magnify the image. He knew Gal was ahead of them, and that it was going to be minutes before the Olympia could do anything. He'd already decided that if he was unable to stop the ship or at best disable it's weapons' systems allowing the other section to destroy it on arrival at Pelgram, then he was left with one option ..
"Bring all weapons on-line ... Raise shields." he ordered.
"We are within firing range Sir." Carron said, "I'd suggest getting a lot closer before we try anything though. That, unfortunately will leave us open to attack ourselves."
"Klingon vessel arming weapons." Beswick said.
"Increase speed. I want to come up on them quickly, try to hit them with what we can. Hopefully, before they can stop us." Tan said, seeing rather than feeling the increase in speed as the Olympia edged closer to her target. Their only real chance was to come up behind the Klingon ship, unload a volley of torpedo's into her warp nacelles and drop back before they get chance to get a lock ..
Carron's head suddenly shot forward as he scrutinized his board. then he spun to face Tan.
"They have dropped mines !"
"ZEE MINUS TEN THOUSAND KILOMETERS ... NOW !" Tan yelled.
He knew full well that the mines would spread out on the plain and no ship could maneuver fast enough to avoid hitting at least one of them.
The tertiary section dropped instantly, Inertial dampers straining to their limits. the bulkheads groaning under the stress. Just as they thought they had got away with it, the shields brushed against the nearest of the mines, it detonated !
The Olympia almost shook apart as the explosion buckled the shields almost to destruction, hull plates ruptured, several decks opened to space as the dorsal shields failed for a few seconds.
Survival was paramount, but stopping that ship was too ..........
E’Liana listened to the drivel of her fellow officers and found herself annoyed at their commanding officer for interrupting a healing patient.
~Why am I surprised?~ Thought E’Liana. ~All Commanding Officer’s do this…it’s part of the job, just as it’s mine to make sure no one goes off the rails…~
She raised an eyebrow in response to Rose’s hacking cough and watched, smiling, in wry amusement as Nurse Maxwell fussed over her patient like an over-protective mother.
Observing her patient, E’Liana failed to hear exactly what was being said by her colleagues and was startled to realise that Rose was directing a question towards her. Even before E’Liana heard the question she didn’t like the hopeful look in Rose’s eyes.
"Permission to return to duty, Sir?"
E’Liana sighed loudly, looking over in exasperation at Smith. ~This sort of dedication to getting oneself killed must be a ship-wide phenomenon…~ E’Liana thought, now shooting a sideways glance at the recently-cured Vulcan.
“Well….” She said, hating to be the bearer of bad news, leaning over to grab her tricorder. “I don’t like the sound of that cough – and don’t try to tell me you’ve always had it”. She quelled the still-ill woman with a look that her own mother would have been proud of.
Everyone stood in silence, listening to the occasional beeps of the tricorder, E’Liana trying to stop herself from making disapproving noises at the results on the scanner.
“I’d rather keep you in for observation” She said, finally. Closing her eyes to the onslaught of the irate officers and the ever-logical Vulcan.
When they finally finished their protests, E’Liana opened her eyes, thinking. “I need to run more tests to check that you’re fit for duty. AFTER that, then perhaps you can go…the health of my patients is paramount, so there’s no point arguing with me…” She added, casually glancing in the direction of her superior officer.
Crystal's heart sank when she heard the doctor's pronouncement. She wanted to get back to normallacy as quickly as possible and for her that meant returning to duty. If she was honest, she didn't feel that good, she was well enough that she would have coped had she been allowed back but... She knew better than to argue. Besides everyone else pitching in her voice probably wasn't up to it. She settled back on the biobed as Doctor BeTor checked her over.
"Could I get a PADD, I need to make some notes and would it be possible for someone to tell Jedda that I'm okay." Crystal knew that if she talked to her cousin then orders or no Jedda would be in sickbay checking on her. It would be far better if someone else told her.
Tag: anyone in sickbay.
Crystal swallowed hard a couple of times trying to make sure that she didn't end up in the midist of another coughing fit. "What happened to me," Crystal asked the doctor."I'm guessing that I inhaled some sort of anesthetic and something a little more toxic but I'm curious about exactly what...." If she was going to stay in sickbay she was going to ask questions it was her way of dealing with both nerves and encroaching boredom.
"Dorsal shields are back on-line, but we are open to space in several places." Carron yelled over the noise.
"OK .. Where's the Klingon ship ?"
"Continuing on their previous heading." the Helm Officer said.
"Bring us up .. Lock all weapons on the vessel." David said, feeling the inertial dampers strain under the turn.
The tertiary section arrowed back toward the celestial plane of the universe. Heading straight for Gall's ship. Phasers discharged, photon torpedoes crossed the void and impacted the Klingon shields. The Olympia passed her foe to port and began to level off her assent, but Gal had been ready for the maneuver and sent a volley of torpedoes. They smashed into the shields, causing severe damage to several decks, but importantly, not managing to destroy any vital systems. Tan knew he had little time, he couldn't allow Gal to evade him or Pelgram would suffer the consequences.
"Sir .... Shields are down to thirty one percent. We won't survive another direct hit like the last." Mike Carron said from Tactical.
Tan had an idea.
"Target their life support systems." he ordered, then continued before the obvious arguments could be raised, "I know they are protected. Make the beam as narrow as possible, set to continuous fire."
"That will deplete weapons' reserves in minutes Sir." Carron pointed out, "We'd be sitting ducks if it failed."
Tan knew this of course, but he figured that if they couldn't breathe, it was going to be very difficult for them to carry out any kind of attack.
The Helm Officer raised the Olympia above the Klingon vessel, cringing as beams of phaser-fire slammed into her shields.
"Fire." Tan said, then leaned forward in his seat as the beam crossed open space, first smashing into the shields, then seconds later, the outer hull of the vessel. This was a one-off shot, and if it didn't work he would be defenseless against anything Gal could throw at him, "Come on .. Get through !" he muttered determinedly.
He saw the two brilliant points of light as they arced up from the Klingon ship .. Torpedoes .. He felt a seconds' nausea as the ship suddenly rolled to starboard, allowing the torpedoes to pass below their port quarter, then as they regained their level flight Carron yelled ..
"We're through ! ..... Their life support is off-line. Barely in time too. We had less than five seconds before the phasers went out ... They are decreasing speed."
"Drop back to one hundred thousand kilometers then match speed. Try to get the forward shields back to full power and make sure the forward torpedoes are ready. Open a channel." David ordered.
"Channel open." Carron confirmed.
=^= Klingon vessel .. You have no life support .. Power down all weapons and prepare for a course change .. You will accompany us to the nearest star base where charges will be brought against you =^=
=^= I don't think so Commander Tan .. Unfortunately I have a prior appointment =^= Gal replied.
=^= Alas you are going to be missing that appointment Gal =^= Tan said, hoping the man wouldn't call his bluff and start another attack, because even with life support disabled, he would have plenty time to finish off the tertiary section of the Olympia before he ran out of air ..........
"I don't exactly know where the primary hull is, sir, but the shuttle will. I decided to catch a nap in my quarters before going on shoreleave and when I woke I found the Olympia had left space dock. There were 22 other life signs aboard her but they apparently simply assumed that the whole crew was ashore." I locked out the warp engines, weapons, shields, gravity generators and a few other secondary systems. I don't know how long the lock-outs will hold though I had to improvise" Crystal Rose said.
"Excellent work Commander" Smith said and turned to Dr. BeTor. "May I at least have my navigation officer back?"
"I have already cleared Remar for duty Commodore, but restricted only. No away missions or heavy physical activity. Stay out of dark alleys and ground combat" the doctor ordered.
"Fine" Smith said. "Remar, get up to the bridge, download the data from your shuttle and Crystals, and find me my primary section."
"Aye sir" Remar said. The Vulcan stood up and left Sickbay and quickly made his way to the bridge. There was another lieutenant sitting at his station. Remar relieved him and sent him on his way.
Once seated, he established connections between the Olympia's main computer and the data banks of the two shuttle and quickly downloaded the relevant information. Remar decided to tackle Commander Rose's data first as it would give directions to the primary hull. He accessed the data and started sorting through it until he found the course taken by the shuttle. Downloading the data was easy and he examined the shuttle's plot track on his display monitor. The track led like an arrow to the fifth planet in the system.
Remar opened a comm channel. "Remar to Commodore Smith. I've access Commander Rose's shuttle data. Her ship came here from the fifth planet in the system. From the research I did on Pelgram, this planet has an unusually strong magnetic field, with high density plasma storms in the upper ionosphere. The primary hull could easily be hiding anywhere in the area of the planet.
Rose looked up at the Doctor. "Could I get a PADD, I need to make some notes and would it be possible for someone to tell Jedda that I'm okay."
E’Liana smiled at her patient. She seemed to be one of those who couldn’t ever stop working. <I’ll have to keep an eye on her…> she thought. But then she said aloud: “That’s no problem, I’ll get you one in a minute.”
Crystal smiled her thanks. "What happened to me…I'm guessing that I inhaled some sort of anesthetic and something a little more toxic but I'm curious about exactly what...."
“That’s what I’m here to find out” replied E’Liana, gesturing towards her tricorder. I may need you to be scanned more thoroughly than this” she said, gesticulating towards the biobed. “The results from here aren’t too detailed and if we want to get rid of that cough…” E’Liana looked at Rose apologetically.
Rose seemed to wilt slightly in response. E’Liana didn’t like what she had to say next… “We may need to restrain you to ensure you don’t move.” She thought she saw Rose’s eyes widen momentarily in alarm. “Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. Obviously, we won’t be able to sedate you, so you’ll just have to think of something to occupy your time I’m afraid…”
Steve stayed in Sickbay when Lt Remar left for the bridge. He could see the Doctor giving him an accusatory glance, and he was not happy about it.
"Doctor, what sort of person do you take me for? I know that my crew takes precedence over the mission. Without them, we pretty much fail. Crystal is to stay here for as long as is necessary, and not one minute before. Besides, we have served together in the past, so surely you would know all that anyway."
He began pacing. "After Arya......after Arya died, I vowed not to let anyone else die on my watch. If that means being cautious then so be it. So don't ever think I am willing to sacrifice anyone just to get the job done."
He knew he was getting angry and backed off. At that moment Remar called him from the Bridge.
=/\= Understood Lt. Set a course and engage at maximum warp. I'll be there shortly. =/\=
"Aye Commodore" Remar replied, and glanced over at Lt. Jenkins, who had assumed the bridge in the Commodores absence. The lieutenant nodded and Remar started entering course commands into his console. He then looked at the Ops officer, who had already made the necessary entries into his system. "Course plotted and laid in sir" Remar reported.
"Good. Engage, and go to Red Alert. There's no telling what we're going to find there" growled Lt. Jenkins.
The Ops officer nodded and changed the Olympia's alert level, then engaged the engines and the ship jumped to warp. As the planet where Commander Rose's shuttle course ended was in the same system as where the ship had been, the trip was very short.
"Bring us out of warp. Put the planet up on the main viewer" Lt. Jenkins ordered. On the main screen Pelgram 5 became visible. The planet was a gas giant. In the upper layers of the planet's atmosphere, fierce plasma storms raged, and wild discharges of red, orange and blue could easily be seen. Remar started pulling information off of his navigation sensors.
"Sir, extremely high levels of interference from the plasma storms. They are interefering with sensors. I am not able to scan deeper than a few kilometers beneath the upper atmosphere. Atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium, but with high levels of methane, ammonia and phosphine." Remar frowned at this readouts. "Pelgram 5 is also an unusually massive gas giant. Gravimetric levels are almost twice the level of what they might be for a gas giant of this size. It must have a massive planetary core. The gravity is affecting our course. Attempting to compensate."
"Fine" Jenkins said. "Tactical report."
The tactical officer never looked up from his readouts as he spoke. "There's no sign yet of the primary hull. The plasma storms are severely reducing our sensor range. The storms are throwing out extremely high levels of charged ions and H-Band radiation. Sensor performance has been degraded by almost 60 percent."
Lt. Jenkins sighed with frustration. "See if you can compensate." Then he turned to the Ops officer. "Prepare a series of 10 Class 7 probes. If we can't get the sensors to work around this planet, we'll send the probes out and have them snoop around for us." Jenkins shook his head. "Whoever stole the Olympia primary hull hid out here for a good reason. It would be very difficult for another ship to find them."
There was silent agreement around the bridge as the crew grappled with the problems that Pelgram 5 was giving them. The silence was suddenly interrupted by the chime that indicated a message. "Sir, we're receiving a distress call! Audio only." the tactical officer said.
"Put it on" Jenkins said tersely.
The tactical officer nodded. Almost immediately, the bridge was filled with the sound of static, that was barely interrupted by a voice. "This is the Olympia to any ship. We are trapped in the atmosphere of Pelgram 5. We have been sabotaged. Main engines out, as are many of our primary systems. We are maintaining our position with navigational thrusters, but we are slowly being sucked down to the core of the planet. Please assist."
Jenkins excitedly turned to the tactical officer. "Bearing to source of transmission?"
"175.51. I'm not picking them up on sensors though" he said.
Jenkins shook his head. "It doesn't matter. Remar, plot a course and proceed at one half impulse."
The Vulcan laid in the course and the secondary hull started moving slowly along the bearing provided by the tactical officer. The science officer broke the silence. "Sir, I think that I've come up with a series of sensor filters that will reduce interference generated by the planet and improve performance."
"Excellent" Jenkins said. "Put them in place and activate. Put whatever you get up on the main screen."
"Aye sir" the science officer said. A view of murky fog came up on the main screen, then slowly cleared. "Ship located sir. We'll have to view it through the filters though. I'll put it on screen."
A vague image of the Olympia primary hull appeared, surrounded by swirling gas and dust. "They must be running the navigation thrusters past capacity to generate that much gas. Commander Rose must have really done a number on them if they couldn't get away from the planet by themselves" Remar said.
Jenkins agreed. "Yes, she must have. However now the problem is that the secondary hull doesn't have enough power by itself to drag them clear. Not sure how we're going to get them out of there." Jenkins shook his head and activated the intercom. "Bridge to Commodore Smith. We have located the primary hull. Report to the bridge please."
Crystal was not happy. She wanted to be out of here but she wasn't going to get out any quicker by being a bad patient. There was something in the Doctor's gaze that suggested to Crystal that she wasn't going to like what came next. “We may need to restrain you to ensure you don’t move.” Crystal didn't like that comment. Being confined brought back unpleasant memories. She felt a shiver go down her spine. Still if the doctor thought it was necessary she would live with it. She would have to. “Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. Obviously, we won’t be able to sedate you, so you’ll just have to think of something to occupy your time I’m afraid…” Crystal's mind had all ready started to wander by the time she was given a PADD. She found it very easy to become lost in a problem so spending a few hours planning some experiments wouldn't be too bad, unless she lost it and started thing about her time on Galfar II...
"I think I can cope with that, Doctor. Please let me know when you wish to begin."
E’Liana looked over at her Commanding Officer and saw that he didn’t look happy with her: "Doctor, what sort of person do you take me for? I know that my crew takes precedence over the mission. Without them, we pretty much fail. Crystal is to stay here for as long as is necessary, and not one minute before. Besides, we have served together in the past, so surely you would know all that anyway."
She did of course realise that, but her overriding nature (she liked to think, anyway) was that of being a Doctor. In reality, of course, she was overly-Klingon, perhaps to make up for her Mother’s side.
Smith began pacing. "After Arya......after Arya died, I vowed not to let anyone else die on my watch. If that means being cautious then so be it. So don't ever think I am willing to sacrifice anyone just to get the job done."
E’Liana noticed that he was getting a little red in the face. Had it been anyone else, E’Liana would have probably retaliated in kind. But this was Smith. She decided to try and let it go, he was obviously upset. E’Liana didn’t trust herself to say anything, deciding instead to bow out as meekly as she could (which wasn’t very, as she was too proud, but she tried nonetheless).
Turning now to her patient, E’Liana could see that this person wasn’t happy either. Inwardly sighing to herself – she wasn’t having a good day – E’Liana smiled hesitantly at Rose, aware that her bedside manner was slipping today.
Nonetheless, her patient managed to say: "I think I can cope with that, Doctor. Please let me know when you wish to begin."
E’Liana nodded and went to get the machine ready. After tinkering away for a few minutes, she gestured to Rose to come over so that they could begin.
“If you become distressed at any time, just let me know and I’ll stop the procedure. I can’t stop it often; otherwise we’ll have to start again.” Attempting to reconcile her bedside manner and her actual mood, E’Liana patted Rose awkwardly on the shoulder, hoping it would be interpreted as reassurance, but she wasn’t too sure…
There was no getting around it, Crystal was nervous. She'd once had a fear of heights but a long climb through the Jefferies Tubes of Starbase Bellicose had broken that fear; now though she wondered if she was developing a fear of confinement. Still, the Olympia's sickbay wasn't a bad place to deal with such a fear.
"thanks, Doctor," With that Crystal closed her eyes and started laying plans. She dimly heard the doctor start running the tests. Crystal experimentally tried to move her hand and found herself held in place by the restraints. A shiver ran down her spine and she took a deep breath trying to imagine herself somewhere else, somewhere where she could move. She knew her unease must have been entirely obvious on the display of her vital signs. She could call a pause to proceedings but on an intellectual level, that is a level where she wasn't scared she was intrigued to see how far she could make herself block everything how. To see how far could she go.
=^= Klingon vessel .. You have no life support .. Power down all weapons and prepare for a course change .. You will accompany us to the nearest star base where charges will be brought against you =^=
=^= I don't think so Commander Tan .. Unfortunately I have a prior appointment =^= Gal replied.
=^= Alas you are going to be missing that appointment Gal =^= Tan said, hoping the man wouldn't call his bluff and start another attack, because even with life support disabled, he would have plenty time to finish off the tertiary section of the Olympia before he ran out of air ...
"Helm. Bring us round to face them. Keep us at one thousand kilometers."
The young Helm Officer began to carry out his orders. The Olympia moved off to starboard, executing a wide turn through almost two hundred degrees. Finishing the turn, she let the tertiary section move forward under her own momentum, watching the distance between the two ships close. At the specified distance she halted all forward motion ..
Now, the two combatants faced each other, neither willing to make any further move at this point, but Tan hoped he looked like he had the upper hand in this stand-off, because if Gal chose to, he could call the bluff.
"What's their status ?" Tan asked.
"Weapons are still on-line. Shields at approximately thirty eight percent and rising slowly, nothing we can't punch through if need be." Carron said.
"Open a cha ......" David began, but Carron spoke again.
"Sir they are moving !" Tan looked from Mike to the screen and sure enough, the Klingon vessel was indeed moving, straight at them, "Sir they have impulse only, there's no chance of them getting their core on-line. It will take them days."
"Back us up. Hold the original distance, and open a damn channel."
"Open." Mike Carron said, watching the screen intently.
=^= Gal ... Where do you think you are going ? =^=
=^= I told you Commander .. I have an appointment .. One I am going to be somewhat late for thanks to you .. But not to worry .. They won't start without me =^=
=^= Come to a stop and disengage your engines .. I am not going to ask twice .. You have thirty seconds to comply then I'll shut your engines off for you =^=
=^= Oh I don't think you will Commander .. The consequences could be dire, very dire indeed .. Because I have a guest .. Two actually, and to prove my sincerity I think I am going to need to let you see just how much conviction I have =^=
The view widened to show several more people. Tan was speechless as he recognized one of them. It was Ambassador Freeman, the man sent to resolve the initial Pelgram situation. The other was his aide Adam Reymonds ... As Tan watched, Gal took a phaser from one of the men guarding the two. He adjusted the setting, then satisfied, he placed the weapon against the Ambassador's head. As if having second thoughts, he looked at the setting again, nodding in satisfaction, he raised the weapon again, but this time aimed, then, without hesitation, fired the phaser point blank at Reymonds ... The aide vanished instantly. His atoms scattered on the sub-atomic level ... Gal turned to face the view-screen, a grin forming ...
=^= Now .. Commander .. Would you like to test my resolve further ? =^=
Tan looked at the man, the cold-blooded murderer, and wondered what the hell to do next ..........
Crystal was busy planning out a whole series of zero-g xenobontany experiments that she would probably never have the time to carry out. The duties of an FO meant that her time in the lab was very limited. Still, if she could get her ideas down maybe V'Sel would be interested in them...
The scan progressed she could hear vague sounds from Doctor BeTor but as she could only see the ceiling of sickbay she tried to tune the sound out. Maybe it wasn't the most sensible thing to do but then Crystal had never really been one for sensible.
When the tests were over and Crystal was released, with a big sigh of relief on her part. However when she looked at the read outs, peering round Doctor BeTor as she did so, her stomach dropped. Crystal was no medic but she had studied biochemisty and was pretty adept at recognising chemical fomulae. However one of the chemicals indicated on the screen. Part of the chemical cocktail she had breathed, was like no chemical she had observed before. She swallowed. As she hadn't been pounced upon by a gang of medics it seemed likely she wasn't going to die, but... Crystal shivered.
"Forgive me, I was a science officer before I was an FO and..." She pointed at the display "That chemical, it's not natural is it? Someone bioengineered it" Crystal paused and swallowed suddenly realising that these people were in possession of a complex bioengineered toxin and one third of a Federation ship. If she was right in her judgement of course.
