Treknology Project: Warp Core Redesign

As we are all familiar with, as seen in the series and movies, the Federation Warp Core has a high tendency to breach, overload, or explode…A LOT. This says to me that there are significant flaws in its design, and I would like to design a new version, one that isn’t quite so hazardous. My hope is to offer this improved design to the COs of the Fleet as a safer alternative to what is currently a fairly dangerous engine.
In this and future redesign projects we undertake, our work will be done in two main phases:
1) Identify what’s wrong with the known design
2) Determine how to address the flaws
Both of these phases will likely challenge what you know about a given technology or science/engineering. To help yourselves with this, I recommend Star Trek resources like Memory Alpha for the former and Wikipedia for the latter. Don’t hesitate to do research and seek out other people’s explanations or criticisms of a given design and bring them up here. However, if you do this, please cite your sources. Give us a link to where you found the information. I don’t want us plagiarizing anyone else’s work.
As examples of the caliber of work I’m looking to produce, see the library entries I’ve already posted.
Warp Core Redesign – Phase 1: Identifying the Flaws[/u]
Here are some of the things I’ve noticed that are bad about the current Warp Core design:
1) That it can, on its own produce more energy than they want it to and overload
2) Coolant leaks allow the warp core to get too hot, causing an overload (the warp reaction shouldn’t be allowed to continue at all in the event of the coolant leak)
3) That’s its possible for a coolant leak to flood inhabited areas of the ship with coolant, forcing the evacuation of that area
4) That it is possible for the warp core ejection system to not work when needed, threatening to destroy the entire starship if the warp core overloads
So…what else is wrong with the Warp Core that anyone else has noticed? (For now, stick to identifying flaws; we’ll move on to how to correct them once we’re done with that)
