~ Mission 21: One Second of Eternity ~
In the sixteenth century, scientists and theologians, like Galilao Galilei, hypothesized that there could be multiple separate universes, each running a parallel existence ... In the twenty forth century, we have seen evidence that this is correct, with species from other 'realities' making their presence known. One notable incursion to our dimension would be Species 8472, who battled the Borg.
In one of those multitude of dimensions, a race we will come to know as the Vezi, had been attempting for many generations, to harness the limitless power of their Suns ... Using an uninhabited system, they began their final tests before putting their technology to the ultimate test !
But things went devastatingly wrong ...
The Vezi race had miscalculated somehow, and instead of a steady, unlimited source of energy, the Sun expended it's billion's of years' worth of life-giving matter, in a fraction of a second ... The system, along with all the most eminent scientists, scholars, thinkers, ceased to exist. The destruction of their experiment had set in motion a chain reaction nothing could stop. Because the explosion, so unbelievably immense, caused each neighboring Sun in turn to self destruct in the same manner, burning away beyond the atomic level in a minuscule fraction of it's expected lifetime ... In less than a minute the dimension had ceased to exist and the shock-wave still expanded. Traversing beyond any physical or natural barriers, to other dimensions, destroying the Suns there too as the blast eventually dissipated ... But before nature, time, divine intervention, could settle into some form of normality, multitudes of dimensions had gone, trillions upon trillions of life forms extinguished in less than a single heart beat .....
Is humanity, along with countless billion's of other sentient species destroyed, about to be handed a life line, a second chance, or was this some cosmic joke ... Douglas Adams once wrote a book entitled:
'Life, the Universe, and Everything'
But the phrase was less than meaningless now, as our own dimension was one of the first to be obliterated, ceasing to exist less than a second after the Vezi blast ..........
