"You don't need my permission in my culture."
Thalin smiled softly, nodding as he did so. "I thank you. I realize that Andorians are not exactly known for their emotional output, however, once the bond of friendship is made formal it is a difficult one to break. I am glad that our strife has come to pass."
"we could apply images to your keys?"
He rose a brow for a moment with folded hands and the cold expression of a Vulcan, "I believe that would be an excellent idea. Should I leave you be to it? I thank you again, for your assistance."
He stared down then as she returned, dumping the contents of the materials all over his station. Amused, and shocked in equal amounts, he continued to stare as she organized them across his console. Shaking his hair from his antennae, or what left he had of the one, he tried to visual the console better, though he could not. Still, things appeared monochromatically to him. However, when the stylus was handed to him, he tilted his aforementioned cranium and sighed slowly, "Are you sure that this was not a bother in any sense of the word?"
The young navigator bowed slightly, though she looked very serious. "It's the least I can do."
He smiled, turning back to it to decipher the new code.

Alyana was on the bridge at her station, she had information on the Aquan language displayed on one of the side screens and was trying to master the intricacies of their verb endings. The communications traffic she was monitoring was pretty much routine so she was quite relaxed.
Mira and Thalin were on the bridge and to Aly's relief they seemed to have patched their differences up. Aly still didn't know what had caused the problem and throught it was none of her business, if one of they wanted her to know they would undoubtedly tell her. "Anything from Argo?" Mira asked, Aly shoke her head in response. Things were quiet at the moment. She intended to enjoy it as she doubted it would last.

OOC: It's been really quiet here so.....
The bridge of the Excalibur was pretty quiet, Aly was muttering to herself in a mixture of three languages as she attempted to master Aquan grammar.
The comm station started the urgent beeping that meant it had received an urgent signal. Aly called the message up. Her stomach twisted and she felt cold.
"Captain, We're receiving a message from the Government of Argo, there has been some sort of explosion in the building where the peace talks are due to take place." Aly swallowed. "The message is on repeat sir."

::interlude... sometime between the beginning of time and the present... before we were where we are now... awe fiddlesticks... this is a retro post::
The doors to the transporter room at starbase 4 opened, and Jim walked through. His bags plopped to the deck as he inquired of the transporter chief his destination.
"how long until Excalibur arrives?"
"It will be a few minutes, ensign. Meanwhile, you any relation to Lee Kelso? I met him a few years back when the Enterprise docked here."
"My cousin."
Soon the Excalibur arrived. Jim stepped onto the transporter padd with his gear, and in a yellow shimmer, he was gone.
Once aboard, he checked in with the captain, then went strait to Engineering to have a look at his new workcenter. Later, He'd finish reading the book he'd been working on, entitled "Swimming with the Fish" by Hugh Betcha, and Shirley U. Jest.
::Present::
Jim was in main impulse control. For the umteenth time jim rechecked the ignition points on the plasma injection manifold. Something was definately out of sync, causing a fluctuation when approaching full impulse that shuddered the ship enough to dribble more than a few drinks.
For the moment, the ship was being driven by the backup manifold, but that only gave three quarters impulse at best.
Finally he found the problem... Not all of the protective coating had been peeled away from the thermal sensor before installation, causing the whole point to seat a few millimeters off center.
Not a dangerous condition, but now that he had it corrected, maybe Nurse Klebba could do her rounds without a coffee stain on the front of her uniform.
Then the out of place discoloration wouldnt draw his gaze away from her eyes.
Then she wouldn't slap him for looking where he shouldn't.
Jim switched back to the main manifold then called the bridge.
=/\=Impulse deck to bridge... I've restored full impulse. you can use it without the shudders, sir.=/\=
He then left impulse control and made his way to the bridge.

"Captain, We're receiving a message from the Government of Argo, there has been some sort of explosion in the building where the peace talks are due to take place." Aly swallowed. "The message is on repeat sir."
Zarath stood carefully, trying not to trip, “That building is of incredible archaeological significance. Its presumed destruction could cause mass chaos on the planet’s surface, considering that it is the part of the so called Old City that was utilized as the establishment for the new air breathing Aquan people to separate from their elder brethren.”
He sighed, “Do you believe that we should place ourselves into orbit and beam an away team? If so, I immediately volunteer for this service myself. I believe that it would be for the best to have a scientist along, regardless of my condition. I promise that it would not impede me.”
He then looked back at his console, feeling for the tactile image that had been placed on it to help him view the controls. “Sir, there is a strong power fluctuation…is something going on in Engineering? It is as though we were being controlled only by the manifolds and by nothing else.”
The Andorian then murmured carefully, “No, it seems now that it’s stopped. Are their tests proceeding in Engineering? If there are….I doubt that I would even know what to say. I would have to say that the structure has to be our primary concern…would you agree sir?” He furrowed up his brow, “Could anyone please tell me if they have any information on why it has been bombed? My records do not show any terrorist activity; however, the world certainly has its share of animosity. I would not doubt if this could be the beginning of a land versus sea battle. I pray that it is not.”

Ephrem knew that his Andorian officer was speaking, but Ephrem was not listening to anything that had been saying since his communications officer reported that a bombing had just occurred on Argos. All the information that had been given to him by Starfleet Command spoke of general peace on the aquatic planet.
"Commander Thalin, prepare an away team to the planet," Ephrem said regaining some of his poise," Commander Ryat and myself will be part of the team. Doctor Ryan will be in charge of helping those wounded in the bombing."
(Thalin)
"Commander Ryat, I want to speak to the General Regent," Ephrem said hoping that he could give him some answers," I want to speak to him immediately."

The Andorian nodded carefully, "Sir, that would be myself, Ryat, the good Doctor, and yourself. Should we bring anyone else along? Perhaps my scientific assistant, or someone out of medical? Perhaps an engineering, or security, consist will be an acceptable choice."
He then turned to the console behind him, quickly displaying the daily duty roster.
"Hmm, Wundt is not free...nor is Zarok. That leaves..well, lets assign Gold to the mission. I'll meet you in the transporter in five minuets."

Ephrem was truly impressed at the readiness showed by his science officer. Normally it took him a few minutes to come up with a well rounded away team and Thalin had just done it in a matter of seconds.
"Commander please add a full security team, I don't want to be left unprepared," Ephrem said as he turned his attention to his communications officer who had been diligently working on getting the General Regent on the line. With a nod of her head, Commander Ryat informed Ephrem that she had indeed completed her task.
"Captain we are very busy down here, what do you want?" the General Regent asked. The abruptness of his greeting took Ephrem aback but he knew this wasn't the time for pleasantries.
"Regent is it possible that one of your people bombed the conference building?" Ephrem asked.
"Even though we have changed our ordainments, many Aquans refuse to step on land," the Regent said," we had nothing to do with this! If you look at reports we have provided, five of my people were also injured."
"Regent, I don't mean any disrespect, but I had to ask," Ephrem said noticing that the Regent thought the water breathers as different than the air breathers. Ephrem had been assured that the water breathers had come to see everyone as Aquans; nothing more, nothing less. Ephrem now knew that this wasn't the case.
"I have to report to the Ruling Tribunal, there is going to be an emergency meeting," the Regent said," we will take care of this. Please stay out of this."
The abrupt end to the conversation caught everyone by surprise and it took a second or two for normal functions to start once again.
"Did anyone else think that was odd?" Ephrem asked of his bridge crew
(All)
"Commander, we are still going down to the planet," Ephrem said as he got up from his center seat," we will conduct our own investigation. We are missing a crucial piece of information and I don't trust the Regent to give it to us. Barbara report back to Starfleet and tell them that we have a problem."

Aly listened with half an ear to the plans for the landing party. She was pleased to find herself in the group, she was however frustrated by the actions of a junior aide who was currently stalling her polite attempts to get the regent on the comm. Eventually she got hold of him
"Captain we are very busy down here, what do you want?" the General Regent asked. The abruptness of his greeting took Ephrem aback but he knew this wasn't the time for pleasantries.

"I have to report to the Ruling Tribunal, there is going to be an emergency meeting," the Regent said," we will take care of this. Please stay out of this."
There was silence, it Aly a moment to realise that the Regent had closed the channel on his end. Aly did likewise.
"Did anyone else think that was odd?" Ephrem asked of his bridge crew
"I did," Aly said, "He's obviously scared and I'm pretty sure he knew more than he was telling us."

The turbolift arrived at the bridge. As he exited the turbolift, he knew for sure something was up. everyone was staring at an empty viewscreen.
"Did anyone else think that was odd?" Ephrem asked of his bridge crew

Jim looked at his engineering display. Impulse was still operating normally, after his repair.
"Did I miss something?" He asked, as he rushed after Captain Santos and Commander Ryat.

Not knowing if he was just being paranoid or overly cautious, Ephrem made his way towards the turbolift. Alongside him were Commanders Ryat and Zarath and the newest member of his senior staff Jim Kelso. Not knowing much about the young engineer, Ephrem decided that this would be the best time to test him.
"Ensign Kelso, the conference building down on Argo was just bombed," Ephrem said turning abruptly which clearly took the man by surprise," we have contacted the authorities down on the planet, but there answers make no sense. I have decided to conduct an investigation of our own. If you would like to join us continue to follow us."
(Jim)
"Alright lets get going," Ephrem said as he looked at the officer's around him. He knew that a security team would be waiting for the foursome and that once again he would be leading a group of men and woman into the unknown.
"Commander Zarath, I want detailed scans of the entire building and all surrounding space," Ephrem said as he turned to the Andorian officer.
(Thalin)
"Commander Ryat, Ensign Kelso you will try to get as much information as possible from the still operational computer systems," Ephrem said knowing that this order would be harder than it had to be. The Aquans would try to stop them and Ephrem had to make sure that he was there to stop them.
(Ryat and Kelso)
"Captain what are your orders?" the security officer immediately asked when they reached the transporter room.
"Establish a 500 hundred meter perimeter and keep it secure," Ephrem said," once you give the order the medical teams will beam down to help the injured."
"Understood, captain," the officer replied as he grabbed his weapon.
"Something is definitely wrong down there," Ephrem said to his team," the General Regent will not be happy when he discovers that we didn't do as he asked. I want you to be ready for anything."

"Well, explosions do tend to interrupt normal service to some things. I'll have an engineering tricorder and toolkit waiting at the transporter foom for me, asn have my repair staff standing by at the cargo transporters to beam down necessary repair parts."
As they boarded the transporter platform, Captain Santos was giving the indevidual orders to the team. It came to Jims instructions. He was pleased to see he'd be working with one of his fellow department heads....
"Commander Ryat, Ensign Kelso you will try to get as much information as possible from the still operational computer systems," Ephrem said.

"Commander Ryat, Ensign Kelso you will try to get as much information as possible from the still operational computer systems," "Aye,sir," Aly replied. She wasn't bad at dealing with computers but was grateful that the engineer was coming as well
"Something is definitely wrong down there," Ephrem said to his team," the General Regent will not be happy when he discovers that we didn't do as he asked. I want you to be ready for anything."
Aly stepped on the the transporter pad, she was grateful that Ryat was okay with transporters or she'd never have been able to do this. They materialised on the planet, there was a scene of barely controlled chaos on the other side of the compound by here was quite quiet. Aly looked around with interest This planet was truly unusual, so much water and so little land. She had read the reports of course and seen the maps but is was so different actually seeing it especially with so many memories of Vulcan.
She broke into a big smile as she and Ensign Kelso headed off towards the computers. "I apologise for not introducing myself properly when you came aboard, I'm Alyana Ryat but feel free to call me Aly."
She looked at the rather battered and blackened computers. "Any idea where we should start?"

She looked at the rather battered and blackened computers. "Any idea where we should start?"
"Certainly..." He replied. "And since we're disregarding rank, you can call me Jim." He looked for the main power disconnect, which he used to shut off electrical power to the computers. He then began to scan the wrecked computer consoles. and compiling a list of parts he'd send for from the ship. So far, two relays, Crystal circuit interupters, about twelve yards of number six-seventeen wire signal cable, and two viewscreens with couplers to interface with this system. And that was just this computer console and communications array. He'd have to see to the mainframe afterwards. Jim sent the parts list to the ship directly through his tricorder. He then turned to Aly.
"It will take them a few minutes to get all of the parts to the cargo transporter room after they adapt the viewscreen couplers. Meanwhile, where are you from?"

Aly watched as the CEO wrote a list of parts and sent up top the Excalibur for them. She was happy to be of use translating labels and passing things.
"Meanwhile, where are you from?"
Aly grinned, she had become quite good at answering that question since she had joined the Excalibur's crew. The spots down the sides of her face clearly marked her as not human.
"I'm a Trill." She stated simply. "There aren't many of us in starfleet, I have to say that the majority of my people aren't keen on leaving the homeworld." Aly sighed, remembering all the hoops she'd had to jump through to be allowed to do this. She gave a slight shrug. "I was bored at home though." Aly paused again. "So where do you come from?"

"Oh, a pace called burton, in Washington County Texas. I've always been facinated with fixing things. That's on Earth, in the continent of North America.
The other side of the room hummed, and in a yellow glittery glow, the parts arrived. The first thing Jim hooked up was the connection to the mainfraim, which in turn, he attached his portable diagnostics computer. Good news.. The mainframe was in another section of the building untouched by the explosion. He got to work installing the various components he had called for. As he worked, he continued his conversation with Aly.
"I've never heard of trills before. What planet are you from? What can you tell me about your people?" He had no idea that a trill was a symbiant race, with each individual being made up of two life forms instead of one.

Ever since she had arrived on Excalibur Aly had been intrigued by Earth. She had never been there but from what she had heard and read it sounded a varied and very interesting planet, not to mention the number of languages there.
Jim continued"I've never heard of trills before. What planet are you from? What can you tell me about your people?"
Aly swallowed for a second trying to work out exactly what she could say that would not get her into trouble back home. "My people are very scientifically adept especially medical sciences. Despite that most of those who've gone off planet are involved in diplomacy some how or other. My grandfather was an ambassador to Vulcan for many years. He told me such wonderful stories that I wanted to get out among the stars myself."
Aly sighed silently to herself she hated lying but she could do nothing else if she wanted to stay in starfleet.

Jim smiled as he worked and listened to Aly. "I know what you mean about relatives inspiring you to want to see the stars. I myself was inspired by my cousin Lee. From time to time he would write and tell of his exploits. He too was an Engineer, but that wasn't enough for him. He got his bridge qualifications at the Navigation console so he could be right in the thick of things as it happened. He was lost to an accident while salvaging repair parts from some dilithium cracking station somewhere."
Jim finished hooking up the couplers to the view screen. After re-energizing the system, he watched with relief as all became operational.
"Here's where you come in, Aly. I'm not to savvy with languages, so you'll have to take over with the upload to Excaliber."

"Did anyone else think that was odd?" Ephrem asked of his bridge crew
“The Aquans are a people of tradition,” said Thalin, puzzled, “This is most peculiar. To see both air and water breathers as Aquans was a command of the elders – the fact that there was a commandment to do something, and it was not done, makes me believe that some kind of partial break down of social order may have occurred. I am not suggesting total anarchy; simply that some kind of upheaval has happened.”
As was typical with Starfleet’s science officers, he had a way of making the sensational seem common place and mundane.
”We are missing a crucial piece of information and I don't trust the Regent to give it to us.”
The Andorian nodded, “I understand fully, sir. I will prepare our away team, and meet with a full security team in transporter room one.”
Zarath then turned back to Ryat, nodding, “If he does indeed have fear…then it would only serve to feed my darkest premonitions.”
"Commander Zarath, I want detailed scans of the entire building and all surrounding space," Ephrem said as he turned to the Andorian officer.
Commander Zarath nodded, looking to him, “I will then pause here; I would ask politely that you continue down into the transporter room. I will provide the scans and have them delivered into a tricorder.”
He turned back to his console, noting gladly that he was starting to be able to see the colors of it. He would soon no longer have need of the makeshift tactile display that was on it. Running his bluish hands across it, he was able to provision a line drawn map of the area and have it placed into a data slate assembly that he carried along with his tricorder.
Finally he placed himself in the turbolift, ready to leave.

Aly listened to Jim's story, she was sorry about the death of his cousin but she had seen too many people die to get truly worked up about it. Not to mention that he seemed to be coping all right. Aly pushed the thoughts away as she saw the computer screens light up.
"Here's where you come in, Aly. I'm not to savvy with languages, so you'll have to take over with the upload to Excalibur."
Aly leaned over the screens her eyes quickly scanning through the curving aquan script. She was pleased that she had gone to the trouble of working on the language because it seemed the one part of the computer that had not come back up was the universal translator. Still after some fiddling and much tapping opf buttons Aly convinced the computer to link up with the Excalibur's computer. a few more key strokes had a universal translator functioning again. It was the one she had had to partially rewrite on the Excalibur's last mission so she was sure that it worked properly.
"Here you go," she said stepping back slightly "should make sense to you now." she leaned forwards and touched a few more keys. "There should be video of the area that was affected by the explosion but it would let me access it...."

"Yes, of course." he said stepping in beside her and hitting a few keys on the control pad. "I have thae map now. The edge of the blast radius isn't too far from here. The shock wave from the explosion must have shook this building to cause the damage to the console." he looked up at aly and smiled at their success. The Escalibur now had a working map of the area, and complete log entries of the timeframe leading up to the explosion.
It was then that everything began to go wrong. Outside the building there arose the sound of shouting in a language Jim didn't understand, followed by a pounding at the door. Whoever it was wasn't knocking politely. They were trying to beat the door down.
Jim flipped open his communicator. =/\= Kelso to Excalibur... We're in a bit of a spot here... I think we've been found out... Come in Excalibur...=/\=
=/\= ...(static)... ...Kelso... ...(more static)... ...Ryat... ...(louder static)... ...unable... ...(high pitched whine, then loss of signal)...=/\=
"Damn..." He said, almost to himself. "we're being jammed." Then, remembering the unknowns beating down the door, "I'm an engineer. Not a marine." He pulled his phaser, set it for stun-wide beam. He would defend himself, but not start a war. After taking a defensive position, he turned to Aly. "Alrightee then, you're the ranking officer here. Any suggestions?"

Aly's knowledge of spoken Aquan wasn't complete but she could understand enough to hear the words 'defilers' and 'terrorists' amongst the insults being hurled at them.
=/\= Kelso to Excalibur... We're in a bit of a spot here... I think we've been found out... Come in Excalibur...=/\=

Aly looked around, there wasn't really anywhere they could go. She swallowed slightly and looked back at the trembling door. Muttering a few choice Klingon phrases to herself as she did so. "If our comms to he ship are being jammed, how about ground based? CXan you hack into the local communications net? If we can get someone who isn't part of a rampaging mob on line I might be able to talk us out of this. If not.."
Aly drew her phaser and set to wide beam stun. She'd seen mobs before and they scared her every time. In fact over the Aquan shouting she almost convinced herself she could hear another voice belonging to someone she (well Zedan) had known a long time ago, but there was no way he could be here.
Jim worked on the comm, Aly held her phaser ready and watched the door continued to shake.

Thalin turned to Kelso with a nod before sighing and looking to his tricorder, “I actually believe that we could eliminate this jamming with a very easy method.” He grasped his phaser and set it to kill, much out of policy. Then, aiming his phaser at the rock outcropping behind them, he fired it trusting that there was a beacon in that vicinity.
“Kelso, are you able to activate any transponder aboard the vessel? At all? I can continue to fire, however, I am unsure of the exact direction…” He then suddenly snapped back to the door that was shaking.
It appeared that they would not hold out against the motions much longer. He held his phaser up to the door as he had with the other outcropping. It immediately fired a spread of three beams of light that seemed to generate a presence that also had a certain amount of effect to it as it caused the door to evaporate in the place that it once stood in.
There and then did he stare into the face of whatever had been assaulting them…

Ephrem had ordered his officer to conduct surveys of the area affected by the explosion and it hadn't taken long for the Regent to send his men to try and scare them off. He knew that his officer would stand thier ground, but he was afraid that someone would get hurt.
"Lieutenant get your men over there. I want the situation to be under our control!" Ephrem ordered as he stopped his investigation and ran towards the pounding sound of the Aquan mob.
"Santos to Excalibur, what are you seeing?" Ephrem asked expecting to get an immediate response. When none came he knew that the Regent was now jamming thier communication and that things would become hostile really quickly. With sweat collecting on his brow, Ephrem joined his officers who had all taken defensive positions. The door finally gave way and a group of a dozen angry Aquans stepped through screaming things that no one understand, but clearly weren't nice. "No one fires unless I give the command. Is that understood?"

Ephrem was hoping that the Excalibur was monitoring them, but for all purposes they were alone without any backup. As he approached the mob, he lowered his weapon and spoke the few words he did know of thier strange language.
"Our purpose is peace and friendship," Ephrem said in native Aquan," we ask for understanding."
"Do not patronize us Captain," the apparent leader of the mob said," we understand your language. We want you gone from here."
"We will not leave," Ephrem said," people have died and I want to know why. Inform the Regent that he must cease the jamming of our communications. My first officer will see this as a hostile action. My communications officer will confirm that this is done before I order my men to back down."

The Mob made it into the area where Aly and Jim were. However they did not attack. Aly could hear the Captain talking and was relieved to think that they would be getting out of here without violence. It was also a relief to have someone else be the one to talk her out of a dangerous situation.
Aly looked across the mob and her eye lighted on a a rather dull looking individual with greying brown hair. He was here. It wasn't like Ryat would ever forget that face. When Zedan had first met him Harad Gilles had been stirring up mobs on Thellis Beta but that had been nearly thirty years ago. Of course Harad would have spent at least 12 of those years on a penal colony. The Thellis Betans had not taken well to finding out that someone had been deliberately stirring up trouble. Aly knew Ryat would always remember the trial, Zedan had been a witness and Harad had made some rather nasty threats towards him.
Of course, there was no proof yet that he had done anything wrong here but Aly was going to watch him very very carefully.
