"Yes, we can simulate multiple fire scenario's whenever we need to ... Commodore." Karka informed the newly-arrived Alyana Ryat.
The Hybrudean noted with a small measure of interest the dim light coming from the fifth floor window of the building to the west. He stepped back from the pair of officers, reading his tricorder and making final checks on the remote link to the two rifle emplacements. One was situated to their left, while the other was placed to the right and behind them. Satisfied, he moved off in the direction Schirra had indicated.
They worked their way into the building, as he'd expected. The musty darkness seemed to close around them as they creaked their way along the fifth floor passageway. Schirra found the body; Commodore Ryat stood behind him, both of them in shock. Karka stood beyond the two of them, his face impassive as the sticky fluid of Zevek's mutilated body seeped into the flooring. On the Hybrudean's features - near-impossible to discern from the casual observer - was the suggestion of a smile.
That soon faded as he saw Schirra realise the presence of the note on the table. Karka realised he'd have to escape with Schirra and Ryat as both of them would've expected. There would be no beam-out in the midst of the explosion. Else Schirra and Ryat would wonder why he wasn't right behind them as they stole themselves from the building.
He ran after them, suddenly fearing that his life may be cleansed from the records at the hands of his and his partner's trap. The three of them dived down the stairwells, flinging themselves from wall to wall, unconcerned for their physical condition as long as they could escape with their lives.
It was a close run thing; and they only just made it.
Emergent moonlight dripped into the alleyway. Corrugated iron boxes lay obtusely - cubic sentinels standing out amongst the detritus and general dereliction of the area around the cooling plant. A prone figure, limbs spread in an arranagement like that of a Hindu deity, lay amongst the detritus.
It stirred, groaning as it realised its return to consciousness was to be marred with pain. Subprocesses - cluttered and damaged from their time in the light of its subconscious - retreated into the back of the mind and pushed the petrified conscious process back to the fore.
There was serious pain emanating from the lower part of his left leg. He sat up, peering down at the damage and inspecting it with a studied eye. A barb of shrapnel had become entangled in his shin: the projectile from 'Zevek''s weapon. Knowing hesitation would only make it worse, he tore it free; attempted to numb the hurt by cutting off the pain centres of his cortex. It didn't fully work and, unavoidably, he yelped at the sheer horror of it; the glistening, crimson fleshy matter of his leg flapping back as he withdrew the shard of metal.
'Karka' disappeared into the night, down an alley to join with 'Zevek' who had retreated to a point far out to the northeast of the pump station. He'd ensured that Ryat and Schirra hadn't seen him leaving their group. He heard a cry that sounded very much like Psonoir's voice from a nearby alleyway. So... there would be no doubt left to them now of his true identity. He only wished they'd manage to take out the Excalibur's CO and medical officer in that one moment; that fateful, fiery moment when his indecision had nearly resulted in his death.
Psonoir dragged himself from the alleyway, and immediately picked out the two figures - one in red, one in blue - on the other side of the yard. He limped his way across to them, wincing in pain from the wound in his leg. "I was attacked," he reported simply, "Two of them. One looked like Zevek. He shot me in the leg and I passed into unconsciousness. What happened after?" he cast about as he asked the question, and spotted the devastated building lying across the open space as well as the chunks of masonry lying all about them. It was clear to him now what'd woken him up.

"Captain Santos, your presence is need on the bridge. The Captain is on the planet and you are the highest ranking officer on the ship at the moment," Davis said as he cut the conversation Ephrem had been having with a nice Lieutenant short.
"What has happened Mark?" Ephrem asked as he excused himself and made a V-line to the lift.
"I do not know Captain, I was just informed a moment ago," Davis replied. As soon as the doors closed in front of them, the claxons sounded the alarm. Something had happened and something was telling Ephrem that was very bad.
"What has happened?" Ephrem asked as he walked onto the bridge. The bridge crew was perplexed at his order, but quickly recognized his authority at this pressing time.
"We have reports of an explosion on the planet, very near to where the Captain had beamed down," the comm officer reported," the explosion or whatever it was is scrambling our initial scans."
"Strengthen them, we need to know where the captain is," Ephrem said as he took his former chair. "Davis, I want you and a security detail to get a transport shuttle ready. Make sure you are ready for whatever possibility."
"Understood, sir, we will be ready within ten minutes," Davis replied.
"Once you are ready, just go, do not wait for my order," Ephrem said as he saw his closest friend Mark Davis walk out of the bridge.
"Captain, we are being approached by two ships, I do not know the ship configurations, but they have taken attack positions," the tactical officer reported.
"Shields up, wait for my order," Ephrem said knowing that very soon the Excalibur could find itself in a firefight. "Hail them!"

It took less than fifteen minutes for Star Fleet Security and Medical Divisions to get people to the refinery. The place suddenly seemed too crowded for Dan's liking, but it was out of his hands now, the Commodore had rightly taken control of the situation and was directing people where they were needed, whether they liked it or not !
Karka and Dan sat restlessly being attended to by Medic's, but both were itching to get into the rubble and find Zevek's body. They needn't have been so enthusiastic ...
"Ma'am ......" one of the Medic's said, addressing the back or Commodore Ryat's head, but the look he received when she turned made him instantly revise his address, "Commodore ... We have checked the 'structure' and have found trace 'DNA' but unfortunately, nothing big enough to take back to Medical ... We did scan the 'remains' and the reading confirms the deceased is in fact one Zevek. Confirmation via his arrival scans leaves no doubt."
"Thank you Lieutenant." Alyana said, steely eyes focused on the area they had just left.
"Speculation here Commodore." Daniel said, musing on an idea as the Medic treated his injuries, "It's a given that the Halanan caused all this. To get us all, or to kill Zevek after my failure to do so, is debatable. But why did they not simply set a device large enough to ensure 'ALL' our deaths, they wouldn't need to worry about where the hell the Excalibur was going to be sent then, at least untill Command could assign a new Commanding Officer and 'departed' crew !"
< tag : Alyana / Karka >
"SIR ! ... will you 'PLEASE' keep STILL !" the Medic insisted, turning Dan on his side, a little more roughly than was required, "There is something in your lower back. Whatever it is it is inert, want me to leave it there ?" the woman said, sarcasm oozing from every word, making Alyana and Karka grin.
"Hmmm ..." Dan said, "Take a stab in the dark." regretting the comment instantly, as the Medic pushed him roughly onto his face and used a hypo-spray to numb the area. Dan yelped as his elbow landed on the tip of a jagged piece of masonry, numbing his arm.
"There you go ... Brave soldier, would you like a lolly-pop ?" the Medic said, handing the small capsule to Ensign Psnoir, before gathering up her gear and departing before Dan could think up one of his rapier-like retorts.
"The Halanan must have ships, or at least, 'A SHIP' in orbit, or close by." Dan said, glaring at the retreating Medic, "We need to contact the Excalibur."
"What can they do ?" Karka asked quietly, "The ship is still in space-dock undergoing her refit."
It was a question on all their minds ! ..........

Karka finished conferring with Commodore Ryat and Commander Schirra and returned to the engineering corps HQ, situated close to the Presidio. He hadn't envisioned the two officers' reactions when he'd told them what had happened in the alleyway. He was 'mildly' surprised to find out they believed he'd been walking around with them for the last twenty minutes.
Whoever the impostor had been, he was now clearly implicated in the murder of Zevek, and probably in the entire setup. Karka didn't fully comprehend the situation, but Schirra had mentioned people who could metamorphosise into, or at least imitate the appearance of, any lifeform of their choosing.
Karka found this surprising. The Halanan certainly weren't the only species with that capability, but the way they'd chosen to employ it on Earth so close to the heart of the Federation's Starfleet was a great cause for concern.
By the time he reached the engineering corps, he had already heard the news of the two mysterious craft approaching the Excalibur's drydock. He reached his station and accessed the communication logs from Starfleet Command. The two ships had been spotted taking off from an old launch pad near San Francisco. They were small, 50 metre-long craft; unknown capabilities, but probably quite agile, and well-armed enough that they'd risk an attack on a Constitution class starship.
Looking around his section of the office, the place seemed surprisingly calm given the minor state of emergency - or at least confusion - at the Presidio. He looked out the panoramic windows at the side of the room, staring at the azure sky. Beyond the opacity of that atmosphere lay Earth Spacedock, and the drydocks situated around it. He needed to get back to the Excalibur, but the ship's shields had been raised to protect it from attack.
He scanned the Excalibur from the nearby listening post, being assisted by three junior personnel and supervised by a lieutenant (even though he wasn't technically a direct part of the corps anymore and wasn't subordinate to that officer).
Nothing seemed amiss with the ship. Schirra's concerns over the ship's safety as a whole only seemed to apply to the craft approaching her. But there was something odd about the way the two small craft were behaving... They were keeping their distance. If they wanted to make themselves a hard target they should've counter-intuitively come much closer to the Excalibur, to use their agility to dart abeam of her, too fast for the starship to acquire a weapons lock. But they were keeping their distance, meaning they were presenting themselves as an easy target for a torpedo strike.
There had to be some reason for their behaviour... Perhaps they were avoiding the Excalibur like they'd avoid an unstable explosive.

Daniel was sat in the transport with Commodore Ryat. They had left the ruins behind and were heading back into San Francisco and Star Fleet Headquarters ... Both of them needed to get more information, not that there was much, on the Halanan. The fact they could compel anyone to see them in any form they so wished, was a frightening prospect !
The transport was travelling fast, only meters from the ground. Standard practice when the threat level was raised ... Commodore Ryat was in contact with the Excalibur, getting an update on the situation with the two unknown vessels ...
< tag : Alyana >
David was looking at the spires reaching skywards that denoted the center of San Francisco. Beyond them the bay, and Headquarters. Schirra was a bit of a maverick when it came to regulations, and one of his pet hobbies was flying. He was a qualified combat pilot, and was rated up to and including the Excalibur refit. But he was a little concerned at how their pilot was handling the transport ... He glanced at the Commodore, who was deep in conversation with both the ship, and Ensign Psonoir ...
"Pilot ... You can ease off on the pace, we're not in that much of a hurry." Dan said, grinning at the back of the woman's head, expecting one of the caustic retorts the flying corps tended to have at the ready, but he got nothing back ... Looking around the crew area, he realized that the Commodore and himself were the only passengers. Unusual given the number of personnel attending the incident ... He looked at the terrain, level, clear of anything they could slam into. But the transport was making an almost lazy turn to port, heading toward the old city outskirts, and there were plenty of buildings above the three meters they were currently at !
"Pilot ... Reduce speed and take us to one thousand meters ...... NOW !" Alyana frowned at her companions tone and asked if there was a problem, "I think we may have, yes." he said, standing and walking forward. He only managed a couple of steps when the pilot turned around ... Daniel found himself looking at the business end of a phaser weapon. He didn't recognize the design, but that hardly mattered.
"Sit down ..... HUMAN ..... I would hate to have to explain your premature deaths to my superiors."
The fire extinguisher, accurately thrown by Alyana, slammed into the woman's forehead, knocking her against the console, it was all the distraction he needed !
Lunging forward, he grabbed at the weapon, pushing it away from his body as the Halanan fired. The shot burned into the upper panel and warning sirens began to sound. The second shot scorched Dan's neck below his right ear before hitting the navigation control overrides. The transport began a series of rapid changes of direction, throwing it's occupants around like rag dolls. Thankfully, the height above the ground remained constant.
Alyana reached forward to grab the weapon, but another direction shift flung Dan and the Halanan backwards and both slammed into the bulkhead as the phaser fired. The woman vanished in a haze of destroyed molecules as her body took the full impact of the resultant beam, but so did the cockpit area ... The transport increased speed to it's maximum and climbed rapidly, then slowed to a stall just as quickly. Their flying, or to be precise, falling, coffin, approached the ground at a steadily increasing velocity !
Primary school physics taught children that if you step off a moving walkway travelling at one meter per second, onto a motionless surface, 'YOU' are still moving at the same one meter per second, and need to compensate or fall on your face. It was the same reasoning that said you can't transport from a ship at warp to the surface of a planet. You would reappear doing the same speed as the ship you just left. Not that your mind would be able to realize the fact before it ceased to exist ... 'Soooo, stepping off a craft moving at almost four hundred kilometers per hour, is let's say ... Unwise ? .....' Dan thought. But as the ground rushed up to meet them he realized he had seconds to act .....
~~~~~
Materializing two meters above the ground, and despite his hurried calculations, moving forward much too fast, Alyana and Daniel slammed into the sandy soil. The wind was knocked out of them both, but that wasn't the end of their journey. The second hit was less traumatic, fractionally, but nevertheless no less painful. The two traversed over one hundred meters before thankfully coming to a halt ... Pain, confusion, and frankly, astonishment, were some of the things both felt as they lay looking up at the sky.
"Someone really should look into that spacial refraction coefficient equation when transporting organic objects." Dan said, coughing out lung-fulls of dust. He looked over to his Commanding Officer, who thankfully, was trying to get to her feet, but not quite managing it, "We deserve a pay rise !" he said, grinning.
~~~~~
Fifteen minutes later a Medical shuttle and several Security Officers arrived. Alyana and Dan were lifted onto mag-lev gurney's and pushed into the Med-shuttle.
"Hmm ... Is it just me, or are you two gluttons for punishment !" the Medic asked, sarcasm oozing from every syllable. Daniel looked up through his concussion-induced haze and realized who it was:
"Do I get my lolly-pop now ?" he asked, before slipping into unconsciousness ..........

Karka's attention had moved away from the Excalibur - although it obviously remained the priority - and had focussed on the situation with Ryat and Schirra. Their shuttle had crashed somewhere outside the city - after the pilot had apparently decided to take the ship on a joyride.
There was some confusion over the shuttle's identification. People weren't sure whether it was the same transport that'd set down at the site of the abandoned plant, where Karka had been imitated and the body of Zevek had been found. It was possible the two Excalibur officers had been coaxed into boarding the wrong shuttle, because there was still an Excalibur security presence at the plant.
Psonoir idly wondered whether he should've stayed with the two of them. He was sure his Hybrudean insight would've prevented them from making such a mistake. The main question now was, had that shuttle come from the Excalibur - hence indicating the ship had been infiltrated, possibly by Halanan - or had it come from somewhere else on Earth?
He decided to take action. He shouldn't have returned to the engineering corps; he was doing little good here. Placing a request for a shuttle ride, he exited the newly-modernised building and headed as quickly as possible to the nearby landing site. He spotted another Excalibur crewmember as he entered the pit that was the shuttle landing pad, standing sedately at the edge presumably waiting for his own shuttle.
"Ensign Brennan? Excellent to see you again." Psonoir said, lining up alongside the red-shirted officer but avoiding his eye.
Brennan was caught off-guard. "Psonoir! What are you doing here? I thought you were on the ship."
"I made a visit to the surface to visit the family..." he sighed... "Then I was called by Commander Schirra to assist him with a personal matter. Turns out it was a bit more than a 'personal matter'."
"I see... So it was you who killed Zevek?" Brennan looked at Psonoir now, apparently sizing him up, regarding him with a studied eye. In the background, Psonoir could see the shuttle - a grey dot in the heavens - on landing approach.
"Negative," Karka said quietly. "There was an impostor. It might have been him that killed Zevek but we don't know for sure. All we do know is that it was probably one of the Halanan; it's probably Halanan ships on approach to the Excalibur; and probably the Halanan who hijacked the transport shuttle."
"You've been quite involved, haven't you?" Brennan said sarcastically, moving towards the shuttle that'd just touched down. Karka followed him.
They took rear seats in the craft. Karka paused briefly before sitting down, moved quickly up front and sat next to the pilot. A frown developed on the pilot's face. He regarded Karka out of the corner of his eye, raising an eyebrow. Karka grinned oddly, "From the Excalibur, right?"
"No. From headquarters. Get back in your seat. I don't let people ride up front." The man flicked some switches, thoroughly irked by the Ensign's behaviour. Karka jumped out of the seat, returning to the rear to join the surprised Brennan, now satisfied they were on the right plane.
"To the Excalibur," Brennan muttered drily. "Let's hope he avoids getting us blown up on approach."

It took the best part of an hour to process the Commodore and Daniel through Medical. But they were still not allowed to leave. Both had been treated for thankfully superficial injuries, but needed rest while the concussion was monitored. 'Astonishing' one of the Doctors commented when he heard they had beamed off a moving shuttle and slammed into the ground ...
"How are you feeling Ma'am ?" Dan asked when they were finally left alone to rest.
"I'd feel a 'LOT' better if you didn't call me Ma'am Daniel." Alyana said, grinning, but twinging as pain raced up her legs once more, "So ... Now you have managed to get Zevek killed, what's your next move ?" she asked, closing her eyes.
For a few seconds, Daniel wasn't sure how much sarcasm the Commodore had put into the question, but he plowed on anyway:
"Well we know they beamed to a vessel in orbit, and have since beamed back to the surface ... So, my thinking is that we ne ....."
"Sorry for the interruption Commodore." a nurse said, "I have been asked to inform you that two ships are approaching the Excalibur. Captain Santos is dealing with the issue. You can use the terminal in the corner to contact the ship." the woman said, stepping back as Alyana swung her legs off the bio-bed.
< tag : Alyana / Ephram >
Daniel sat patiently listening to the conversation between the Excalibur's Commanding Officer and the Diplomat assigned to the ship. In the corner of his eye he noticed the nurse. She was watching the Commodore intently ... Slowly, she began to approach Alyana:
"Nurse, is there a problem ?"
The woman completely ignored the question, concentrating on moving ever closer Alyana. It was then that Dan noticed her right arm was stiffly at her side but she was raising it every step. Dan got down from his bio-bed and almost lost his balance for a second before making his way across the Medical Bay. Then he saw it ......A knife !
Running now, he slammed his fist into the woman's temple, knocking her off her feet. Alyana spun at the sound of his fist impacting skull. Dan jumped on the woman and grabbed at the weapon, but the Halanan was too strong for him. She threw him off to the side as the Commodore landed a well-aimed kick to the woman's midriff and she spat orange blood across the floor ... Her appearance suddenly wavered, as if she was having difficulty holding illusion. Glaring at Alyana, the Halanan suddenly jumped to her feet and drew back the blade. The phaser beam hit her in the chest and she, it, screamed in agony, before her body disintegrated into nothing but atoms.
Both Daniel and Alyana turned to face the door. A red-clad Security Officer was entering the room, phaser held ready. He scanned the room quickly before turning to the two Officers.
"Commodore, Commander, are you injured ?" ..........

OOC: Thank you all. This is me playing catch up. Please be aware that the new mission Fire and Mercy has started.
At the refinery
"Bio-signs." he said, puzzled, "I'm pretty sure those readings weren't there the last time I scanned the area. So ... I need to go check out that building." he said, taking out his phaser and double-checking it was in working order and fully charged.
Aly raised her eyebrows and then nodded. "Be cautious and try to start the shooting. But if the shooting does start be standing when it's over"
It wasn't much of a condition but she didn't want to limit him or give him too much to think about which might distract him at a critical moment. She all ready knew he wasn't the type to start shooting without thinking, she'd have been shot herself if he were.
************
"Run Now!". Aly had never been a particularly good sprinter but she understood the implications of what they were seeing. She turned on her heel and ran. Her lungs burned and she felt heat on her back and a push that knocked her flat to the dusty ground.
****************************************************
In the medical bay
"Speculation here Commodore." Daniel said, musing on an idea as the Medic treated his injuries, "It's a given that the Halanan caused all this. To get us all, or to kill Zevek after my failure to do so, is debatable. But why did they not simply set a device large enough to ensure 'ALL' our deaths, they wouldn't need to worry about where the hell the Excalibur was going to be sent then, at least untill Command could assign a new Commanding Officer and 'departed' crew !"
"I don't know Lieutenant. It may be that they wanted us to survive. If you die they lose their hold on you and if they still consider you useful...." Aly did not like where her thoughts were taking her but it was at least a distraction from her bruises.
****************************************************
On the transport.
Aly's fingers tapped the arm of her chair impatiently. It was wrong that her ship was in danger and she was here. Still there was nothing that could be done about it. If anyone could be trusted to take care of the Excal it was Ephrem but that didn't help.
"Pilot ... Reduce speed and take us to one thousand meters ...... NOW !" Alyana frowned as Dan's words dragged her away from her conversation. "Have we got a problem?"
"I think we may have, yes." She saw the glint of the phase a moment before the pilot raised it point at Dan. Taking advantage of the woman's singular focus, Aly silently unhooked the fire extinguisher from the wall next to her seat.
"Sit down ..... HUMAN ..... I would hate to have to explain your premature deaths to my superiors."
She threw, her missle struck the woman's forehead providing enough of an opening for Dan to act.
******************************************************
Planetside
Aly had never had a never had a problem with heights but that really had helped.
She hadn't landed right on the first bounce and now her ankle was complaining and then she had inhaled what felt like several hundred grams of dust on the second.
"Someone really should look into that spacial refraction coefficient equation when transporting organic objects." Dan said, coughing out lung-fulls of dust. He looked over to his Commanding Officer, who thankfully, was trying to get to her feet, but not quite managing it, "We deserve a pay rise !" he said, grinning.
"We should probably get hazard pay as standard." She couldn't put her weight on her left ankle. It didn't feel like a break but she knew from experience that sprains could be a lot more annoying and take longer to heal.
*****************************************************
Medbay again
"How are you feeling Ma'am ?" Dan asked when they were finally left alone to rest.
"I'd feel a 'LOT' better if you didn't call me Ma'am Daniel." Alyana said, grinning, but wincing as pain raced up her leg once again. She had stuck to a small dose of analgesi with the aim of knowing when she was at risk of damaging her ankle further. "So ... Now you have managed to get Zevek killed, what's your next move ?" she asked, closing her eyes. That hadn't come out quite the way she had meant it, pain made it harder to think.
The walk to the terminal didn't hurt at all. "Commodore Ryat here, how are things up there Captain Santos?"
Tag: Ephrem + All
There was a thud from behind Aly and she turned to see Dan engaged in a fist fight with the nurse would was brandishing a knife. She hated shapeshifters.
She approached carefully. Just as Daniel was tossed to one side she lashed out a side kick which caught the Halanan in the midrift and made Aly gasp in pain.
Their attacker disappeared in a phaser shot, Aly wished they had a prisoner but knew the security officer hadn't really had time to do much if he wanted to stop the knife being thrown. Then again he probably shouldn't be walking around with his phaser set to kill. Then again it was implied that Halanans were a bit more resistant to phaser fire than humans. "Commodore, Commander, are you injured ?"
Aly shrugged. "No more so than I was. Jarred a sprain but I'm all right." she looked over at Dan.

Twelve hours later:It transpired that the failed attach on Commodore Ryat coincided with the disappearance of the two Halanan vessels that had approached the still-docked Excalibur ... Despite extensive investigations over the last few hours, no sign could be found that the Halanan had even been on Earth, let alone been the major cause of the destruction and injury to Star Fleet personnel. Commodore Ryat had had her sprained ankle fixed and had been summoned to Command, Daniel hoped it was for assignment reasons, and not for some sort of chewing out ...... When the Doctor finally released him 'Fit for Duty' Dan went for a drink, then, after some rest, checked on the status of the Excalibur. He was wandering aimlessly when an Ensign approached him: "Commander ..... Message from the Excalibur ..... All Senior Staff are to transport back to the ship and report to the Commodore at sixteen hundred hours." "Thank you Ensign." Schirra said. ~~~~~~~~~~* To be continued on the mission thread *
