In transit to Acturus III Lorna was kept busy by an outbreak of Keltish 'flu, nothing particularly serious but 25 cases of sniffles and sore throats throughout the ship. The outbreak was now under control and there hadn't been any more cases in the last 18 hours. On top of the usual burns, strains and cuts expected on a starship it had meant that Lorna and her team hadn't had as much time to devote to preparing for the mission as she had planned. However, despite that she had managed to get the in-water and under-water credentials of all her staff checked and updated as needed. As everyone else was doing the same thing there had also been two cases of water inhalation...
She had also familiarised her team with the planet and the Nahrid. It was going to be interesting. The last time Lorna had been to a water world it had been a colony world and she had spent most of her time in the submerged domes. Arcturus III was completely different .
As for the rest of the mission, due to the classification Lorna hadn't filled her staff in on the details she did have three members of staff looking at treatments for sonic damage but that wasn't entirely unusual. On most days medical staff could be found researching / updating their knowledge of new treatments. All in all it had been a tiring few days but Lorna was feeling pleased with her team. As always they had done well.
She was just finishing up dealing with a fractured hand. PO Tremayne had fallen awkwardly during a training session. =/\=All senior personnel, report to the conference room.=/\= Lorna acknowledged the order and then sighed. She handed Maggie Tremayne over to Meri and tidied herself up a bit. She walked into the conference room 13 minutes after receiving the summons.
The Captain walked in two minutes later.
"Status reports." he said.
Lorna waited her turn and then spoke up, "The Keltish 'flu outbreak is under control. The whole medical staff has updated their underwater proficiency and we've been researching various types of sonic injury just in case."

Will listened as his crew ran through their reports and was very impressed and pleased with each of them.
Aarons had his sub project running at optimal which Will had come to expect nothing less from the young man.
Dr. Holsen reported that the Medical staff was prepped and ready.
"Thank you, Doctor." he said as the reports continued.
After the meeting was over, Will sat there a moment thinking about how talented and skilled the crew was and he was glad that he had been given the chance to command the Rainier and her crew.

Nathan returned to the pool as soon as he was able. He knew Kay might follow him sooner or later but given her fears he didn't expect her to. He made no expectations of her whatsoever, and only had his offer to assist her to give to her. He never backed down on a promise given and he'd promised her he'd stay close when they were going down under.
But, he wanted to gain as much experience as was possible and when he entered the pool carrying the tank over his shoulder he was faced with his instructor, who held out a dagger to him. "I presume you know how to use one of these?" he stated as the counselor approached.
A little confused, Nathan set the tank down and studied it, before taking it in his hand. "Only in a kitchen," he admitted, "what's this?"
"A diving dagger. It's meant for your protection while under water. And not just in case of an attack, but in case of entanglement as well. You need to be able to cut yourself free, and that's what we'll be practicing now. So, get geared up and I'll show you where to put this."
Reluctantly, nathan nodded and got himself geared up, then watched as the man attached the dagger to the inside of his left leg. After that, he let himself drop backwards into the water. Promptly, a net was cast over him and in a moment of panic, he struggled. This only got him more tangled up in the net and he was using more oxygen as his breath quickened in fear.
Someone dove in beside him and signaled for him to take the dagger and cut himself free. He tried but it took him several attempts to grab it from it's sheath and then he managed to drop it. He let the air vent from his vest so he would sink and he managed to pick up the dagger from the bottom of the pool and savagely slashed at the net. The offending object fell away from him and he just floated there for a moment, before finding his way to the surface.
He never made it however as there were more splashes and someone yanked him back down by his right flipper. In reflex, he slashed back with the dagger he still had in his hand but knew he had missed as he was still going down. He kicked with his other foot but it too was grabbed.
A struggle followed where Nathan was forced to defend himself with the only weapons he had: the dagger, and his flippers. And at the same time, try to keep breathing through the octopus in his mouth which at some point he forgot as he gasped for air when one of his attackers tried to get to his airtank and yanked him back.
After a few minutes, he resurfaced, looking flushed and flustered. Three other divers came up beside him, one of them sporting a few scratched of which he had no doubt sickbay could heal. A little tired, he swam towards the pool's edge, the same side where Kay was sitting, but still a few meters away from her. "That's it for today," he panted as his instructor relieved him of his jacket and tank.
"Might want to practice your self defense skills there, and rely a bit more on your survival skills. You dropped the dagger, that could've gotten you and your buddy killed."

The meeting nailed down the details of the away mission; Aarons would pilot the sub-shuttle with the Marine Jayden Mitchell taking point, due to the military aspects of their search. Kay would lead the diplomatic team.
The Nahrid cities were found closer to the surface of the water, allowing for the sunlight needed for their aquatic agriculture. However, it was speculated that the weapon would be found at deeper depths, away from prying eyes. The inhabitants of Acturus III possessed the ability to dive without the aid of any artificial apparatus. Like the great whales of Earth, they could survive for hours at depths which would kill most humanoids. Aarons and Mitchell's team would need to be cautious even with the modifications Michael had made. One miscalculation could cause the shuttle's hull to collapse, give all the passengers the bends, or worse.
Kay found herself worrying more and more about her dive. In order to get in more practice time, she left her translating research to log a few more hours in the ship's pool.
She arrived to find Dr. van Brueghel doing the same. She waved politely at him from across the pool. He gave her a friendly wave back as he dropped back-first into the water. A shudder of fright went through Kay as she thought how she could never do what he just did. She had yet to jump into the pool from the side - and that was facing the water. She couldn't imagine falling backwards into it. Trust and water were diametrically opposed antonyms to Kay's mind.
Not wanting to interrupt the lesson in progress, Kay contented herself by sitting on the edge of the pool and dangling her feet in the water.
The diving dagger was lethal looking. Kay's mind flashed through a scenario in which the Doctor, in order to save himself, slashed through their buddy rope as an entangled and panicking Cornette slowly sank into the darkened depths, her arms flailing and desperately reaching out to a disappearing van Breughel.
"Ready to try?" The instructor's question roused Kay from her day-mare.
"Uhh... not especially. Can I watch a bit longer?" Kay bit her bottom lip and comically tried to wipe her sweating palms on her wetsuit.

The Rainier was now three hours out from their destination. So far, everything had been going well. While not quite getting over her fear, Will was impressed by how much Kay was willing to deal with it. She had been sticking to her lessons regularly. Everyone now sat on the bridge waiting to get a glimpse of a completely water covered planet. Teams had been formed and assignments had been given.
"Mr. Aarons. Please put us in a synchronous orbit over their main city as soon as we arrive in the system." Will said to his Navigator.

The staff meeting had been short and Paikea was more than happy to give the captain a full report on everything he had discovered about the Nahrid. Paikea was also pleased that there was progress being made on the translation matrix for the Nahrid language. Pai would not be able to hide his disappointment if he was unable to effectively communicate with the Nahrid. Paikea had also been able to inform the senior staff that he and Katie had started working on a device that should be able to more effectively detect abnormal sonic emissions. In all Paikea had been able to keep himself and his entire department busy with the current mission at hand.
Unable to hid his excitement, Paikea was almost childlike as he waited for the Rainier to get close enough to get a good view of Acturus III. As soon as the Rainier was close enough to begin active scans, Pai began an array of scans in hopes of discovering something new. It didn't take long to discover that the planet's poles somehow blocked the Rainier's scans.
"Captain, I'm not sure why, but our scans are not able to penetrate more than 1000 meters into the water at the poles of the planet," Paikea reported as he doubled his efforts to penetrate the water. Finding that there was nothing else he could do until they reached the planet, Pai assigned a few of his aquatic specialist in his department to help him figure out the problem with the poles. The possibility that the magnetic anomalies at the poles might be a natural occurring phenomena peaked Paikea's scientific curiosity.

Lorna was off duty and for once it had stuck, there had been no emergencies and she had no been called to sickbay. Instead she was now walking slowly back to her quarters with her arm round her wife's shoulders and both of them laughing after a particularly good work-out session. This time they had been focussing on athletics and agility so while both were aching neither of them was bruised. They got back their quarters and Cris flopped on the sofa. "Computer: Music Selection Lieder Three".
Lorna wandered to the replicator as some calming Metzal Jazz started playing. "Two glasses of iced water." She carried the drinks back to the sofa and Cris moved to leave enough visible cushion for Lorna to sit down. As soon as the drinks were safely on the coffee table Cris flopped back down with her head on Lorna's lap. It seemed it was going to be a peaceful evening.

They sat at the briefing table one last time.
"So everyone knows what they're doing, right?" said Will.
It was more of a statement that a question. He looked around the table before continuing.
"Number One. You and your team will address the Nahrid. The usual Diplomatic dog and pony show while seeing what you can find out about the sonic weapon."
He turned his head to the only Marine present.
"Corporal Mitchell. You, Comamnder Aarons and the others from your team will take the shuttle sub and see if there's anything you can scan and detect on your own."
He scanned the table once more.
"I want regular reports from both away teams, understood? Good. Dismissed."
The teams headed out and began getting ready to depart.

Jayden walked up to Aarons and gave him a once over. "Ready when you are sir, I've heard you're not a half bad pilot sir. But how are your submarine skills, I'm sure it's a little different than flying in space?"
The marine smiled slightly as he waited for an answer, while watching his husband leave the room with Captain Cornette.
(Aarons)
Meanwhile, Nathan walked with Kaylana to the transporter room. They were to beam down to one of the few islands and from there proceed with their dive. Their necessary equipment was already transported down ahead of them and was awaiting their arrival, along with someone to assist them in gearing up.
Before entering the transporter room, away from the prying eyes of the transporter operator, Nathan reached out to her and gently made her turn around so she was facing him. "Everything will be all right," he assured her, "I have every faith in you and you'll be fine once we dive. I won't leave your side and no matter how you think you should act, if you want to return to the surface for any reason, we will and from there we shall try as many times until you are sure you can reach your goal. I won't let anyone pressure you into going down fast to our destination. Your pace, and no-one else's." There was promise in his voice even though he couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be any pressure. A lot depended on this meeting, and he knew he had to get her there. But he understood her fear, and he wanted her to go at her own pace.
(kay, optional)
"When you're ready, we'll dive," he added, before they entered the room and stepped up to the pad. "Energize."
They were met with a slight humid breeze and the sun beating down on them. Nathan blinked against the bright light, then shrugged it off. It was actually quite pleasant here and he wondered if perhaps afterwards he would be able to spend a few hours here with his family. No doubt they would enjoy such an idyllic surrounding as much as he did now.
Alas, business awaited and he started to strip down to his shorts before pulling on the wetsuit. He didn't know how deep they had to go but a wetsuit was a safety measure anyway as he didn't know the water temperature. He sat down to pull on his flippers, then allowed their assistant to pull him back to his feet and help him into his vest which had the air tank attached to it. Once that was done, he turned to Kay. "Ready?"
(same restriction applies to Jayden that applies to Nathan: do not write my NPC. Only I and those I have granted permission to write him, may do so. And so far, there are none that have been granted such.)

OOC: I hope I haven't missed Lorna being assigned to one or other of the away teams...
Lorna knew that the away teams had been sent down to the planet but she hadn't been sent. Cris was now on duty and Lorna was feeling a bit lost she was worrying, no, she was mildly concerned about her crewmembers, that was one reason she enjoyed going on away missions. That, and as a space brat planet under her feet was somewhat of a novelty.
She found herself pacing in her quarters and imagining how Cris would berate her for stressing herself. In the end Lorna found herself seated at the dinning table reading a journal paper about various treatments for sonic damage. As often occurred when she was a little stressed and reading about nasty things that had happened to other people, the scars on her arms started to itch. Of course the damage from the plasma whip meant that quite a lot of the nerves signals were interpreted as itching. She occasionally read up about new treatments but so far none of them would allow the nerves to be replaced without putting her fine motor skills at risk, she could have got rid of the scars, of course, but she had now had them long enough that she considered them part of her.
She continued to scroll through the paper hoping that she would not have to use any of the treatments.

The away teams were gone and Will found himself sitting on the bridge. He was worried about his XO but knew that she would be okay. She was a very capable officer and he was once again glad to have her aboard the Rainier. The counselor was with her as well and would help as much as he could. The shuttle/sub team had departed a few moments ago and Will was waiting to hear from them. It was weird to look down at the nav station and not see Aarons. Will stood and began pacing the bridge.
"Any word for the shuttle yet?" he asked the communications officer again.
"No, sir. Nothing yet." came the reply.
"Very well. Give them a few more minutes and than began hailing them. I want to know as soon as they are in the water."
"Aye, sir."

The walk to the transporter room may have well been a walk to the executioner’s block. Kay, steps measured and slow, searched for a distraction to ease her worried mind. So far, nothing was working.
Nearing her destination, she looked up to find Dr. van Breughel. She was about to give him a cordial nod and enter the transporter room when he gently ushered her aside. He spoke so kindly and assured her that she could resurface if she needed. Kay really hadn’t thought of it that way. Taking her time, descending at her own pace may very well make it doable. “I appreciate your help so much. Truly, I do. I don’t think I could face this right now if you weren’t along. Thank you.” Kay clasped his hand warmly.
Now on the surface of Acturus III, the team was ready and assembled. If the surrounding were a beautiful, idyllic setting, Kay didn’t notice. Her fingers trembled slightly as she readied her equipment. Telling herself over and over again that she could do this, wasn’t helping either.
Kay looked at her team and acknowledged each of them; Lt. Patricia Griffith, marine biologist, Lt. jg Arvid Milliken, communications specialist, Commander Paikea Apirana, Dr. Nathan van Breughel, and Lt. Cmdr. Edward Motz, security officer. She kept her opening words to them succinct, more to avoid them seeing her lower lip quivering than for brevity. “Stay close. No wandering off to investigate. Commander Apirana and Lt. Milliken will be recording our meeting in hopes we can quickly pick up their infrasonic language. Hopefully, we won’t make any diplomatic faux pas before that happens.” The majority of the diplomatic talks would be dependent on Kay, but Kay would be counting on Milliken and Apriana to feed any newly discovered words into the UT. Their quick skill would turn any new sounds into useable language. And she would need all the useable language she could get.
Nathan looked to Kay. “Ready?”
Kay blinked up at the bright sun as if she may never see it again, took in a long, slow breath of artificial air and willed herself to nod ‘yes’ at him.
The good doctor took her hand and led her to the water’s edge. Kay waded in on her own terms and went at her own pace. As the water’s edge became level with her eyes, she hesitated and glanced at van Breughel. His kind smile encouraged her more than words and Kay slipped under the surface.
“This isn’t so bad,” she thought as she trudged along the sandy bottom of the ocean. Soon, however, the solid ground beneath her fell away into a deep ravine and she was free-floating. The sensation caused her to gasp sharply. She continued breathing too fast and heard the internal alarm calmly prompt her to breathe normally.
Nathan, true to his promise, was right at her side. He moved a bit closer and gave her hand a solid grip. Kay’s breathing slowed enough to squelch the alarm.
The water grew darker as the team floated farther into the depths. As the surroundings took on the look of early twilight, they could see the outline of some type of dwellings. The architecture resembled the conical shape of a swallow’s nest, but with well-planned ridges bulging out here and there for an aesthetic design. There were also glittering sparkles sprinkled into the building material. Kay guessed it was used to help accentuate any natural lighting, or maybe just to look pretty. Some structures were tall and on pylons while some were flush with the ocean floor. Entry ways into the buildings were at the top of each structure, even those built on the bottom. Kay thought this practical since the ocean, like space, wasn’t as dependent on up remaining up, and down remaining down.
Just ahead, a party of Nahrid was apparently waiting to greet them. The sight of them was strange to say the least. They were large; nearly the size of Earth’s orcas, but with features more like that of Earth’s manatees. Their faces were whiskered and had very large eyes. Darkness obscured many of the details of skin color and pattern, but it was easy to see the intelligence in their eyes. Front ‘flippers’ were held out horizontally from their pudgy bodies and Kay could see how the tips had tapered ‘fingers.’
Thinking you could never go wrong with a bow, Kay bent her body low in greeting and tried out the only line of dialogue she had rehearsed in Nahrid-speak.

Will had just finished signing off on some department reports when the comm officer addressed him.
"Sir. Commander Delik is hailing us from the shuttle team."
"Delik." Will muttered as he imagined hitting himself in the forehead. In the anticipation of the mission, Will had completely forgotten that Commander Aarons had taken ill and was now recuperating in his quarters and Lieutenant Commander Delik, the Rainier's Acting Chief Tactical Security Officer, was piloting the shuttle.
"Onscreen." Will replied.
"I'm afraid it's audio only, sir." answered the young officer.
"Very well. Put him through."
There was a brief second of static before Deliks voice came through.
"Shuttle craft U.S.S. Queen Anne to Rainier. Can you read me Rainier?"
"We got you Delik. Report." Will said.
"Sir. We've submerged about 100 kilometers outside the main city that Captain Cornette and her team were heading for. I must say that Commander Aarons did a fine job with the modifications here. We're ready to fire this thing up and begin our search, sir." Delik said enthusiastically.
"Very well. Corporal Mitchell is in charge. You just keep'em all safe and bring'em back."
"Aye, sir. Queen Anne out."
The transmission broke and Will returned to his seat. Now all he needed was to hear from Kaylana's team."

On board the shuttle....
Delik turned his head as the transmission with the Rainier went out and smiled at the young Marine.
"You heard him, Corporal. This is your show. Where to?"

The Nahrid at center squeaked, squealed, then uttered a long rumbling sound which Kay could feel vibrate around her. The Universal Translator interpreted the noises as "We welcome you." Then, it failed to decipher the next bit. The Away Team only heard partial tidbits.
"New.... have never seen....maybe come....why not?"
Kay looked worriedly at Pai hoping he could fill in the blanks for her.
<Pai>
"It is our pleasure to meet you," Kay tried. "We know that you may not understand all our words and we may not understand all of yours either."
She waited to see if the UT gave them the gist of her conversation. The Nahrid floated, expressionless in front of her.
A series of guttural grunts, moans and gargles ensued from the center Nahrid as he motioned the Away Team to follow.
Kay nodded to her team and they all headed off for one of the structures ahead of them in the darkness.
As they paddled furiously to stay up with the agile Nahrid, Kay realized she hadn't thought about how much water was all around her for for at least a minute or two. A quick glance to her side told her that Nathan was still there, watching her carefully, but not overwhelming her with attention.
It wasn't too long before they reached the structure and all headed into the dark opening, single file.
Kay wanted the building to open up into a large room with adequate illumination. It did not. The room just beyond the opening was barely big enough for the Nahrid's large bodies, let alone all of the Away Team. And it was dark. Very dark. Kay activated her suit's exterior light. Suddenly, the Nahrid all screeched loudly. The light obviously bothered their sensitive eyes and Kay immediately doused it.
"My apologies," she offered, not knowing if the UT got it right.
The Nahrid circled close and began chattering away to one another. Kay, in kind, gathered in her team. "Well, we know that lighting at a comfortable level for us is not comfortable for them." She looked to Pai. "They are talking up a storm over there. Make sure we get that recorded. We need to speed things up if we're going to make any progress with establishing diplomatic relations."

"There, keep the strapping on for at least 24 hours, come back immediately if your elbow starts hurting again and next time use a proper ladder."
Ensign Millar nodded frantically with each comment but Lorna actually thought the chances of him following them was about 50:50 at least until it really started hurting. It had been been a complex surgery rejoining two and a half tendons. She was actually quite impressed that he had managed to do so much damage to himself simply falling off a chair. Still, Lorna was long past the point of being surprised at the ways people could injure themselves. Still, it was better than seeing the damage they could inflict on each other; and, she had seen plenty of that.
It had been a pretty quiet shift actually, Ensign Millar had been the only serious injury. Of course, the shift wasn't over yet so there was no way she'd say that out loud. With the away teams still away anything could yet happen.

The Nahrid's home world was everything that Paikea thought it would be. The surface deceptively camouflaged a thriving culture and diverse ecosystems. The scientist in him wanted to explore every crevice of the ocean floor, but the floating bodies of away team reminded him that they were here for another reason. As the team made its way to the rendezvous point, Paikea let out a small gasp of amazement as he saw the Nahrid for the first time with his eyes. They were magnificent.
"We welcome you" were the words said by the lead Nahrid before the universal translator failed to decipher the rest of the words. Paikea began to immediately work on the UT; it seemed his translation matrix was not complex enough to do the trick. It would take them a lot of practice and spoken Nahrid language before these talks would be able to begin.
"Something about meeting and working but I'm not sure about the rest. I'm sorry, Captain, the UT is deciphering as fast as it can, but this language is extremely complex, I'm tweaking it as we go, but it might take a while," Paikea said knowing that this wasn't the news that Captain Cornette wanted to hear.
Even though she didn't get the news she was hoping for, the Captain was an able diplomat and apologized for our lack of understanding. Paikea knew that if it was him, he would have not had given that a second thought.
With the initial pleasantries now over, the Nahrid instructed the away team to follow them into a rather menacing enclosure. Paikea quickly realized that it would be rather difficult for them to keep up with the Nahrid, as he was quickly out of breath trying to keep up. AS they walked through the corridor, Pai realized that it was getting dimmer and dimmer as they approached the building. Before he had the chance to activate his suits lights, the captain had done so much to the dismay of the Nahrid. Their eyes were well adapted to the dark and anything much brighter than that was overpowering to them.
"They are talking up a storm over there. Make sure we get that recorded. We need to speed things up if we're going to make any progress with establishing diplomatic relations."
Not wanting to show any kind of disrespect, Pai approach the group of Nahrid slowly. Captain Cornette was correct right, the Nahrid were talking up a storm because his UT was barely catching any of the conversation. Pai just had to remember that progress would be made much slower than he was accustomed to.
“Pet…..small….funny…appearance” were a few words that the UT was able to pick up and Paikea realized that they were talking about the away team. At that moment, Paikea realized that the Nahrid could very easily eat any of them and at that exact moment he wished he was back on the Rainier.

Patience. A virtue Kay often had to remind herself to develop.
As she hung there, floating in the black waters, waiting patiently for the talented Commander Apriana to collect more data, she placed a purposeful smile on her lips. The Nahrid were foggy shadows in front of her. The lack of light intensified the growing uneasiness in her gut. The imagination can run amuck in the dark. But, the smile remained on her lips. Kay had no idea if a smile was translating as friendly to the Nahrid... or if they could even see her expression through the faceplate of her underwater helmet. Still, she smiled on. And waited.
As the Nahrid continued to prattle on, Kay marveled at how complex their language was in comparison to bipeds. Small reverberations rippled through her body in response to their infrasonic speech. The room they were in seemed to be built to amplify the effect. When several of them spoke at once, the result felt a bit like billions of marching ants crawling over your body. It was hard to grasp that what she heard, and what she didn't hear, was all part of their everyday speech.
Suddenly, the Nahrid encircled the team, spreading out their limbs with flippered fingers barely touching. Whether or not the move was menacing, their size and posture made it feel as such.
Nervously, Kay looked to Commander Pai. "Uh... do you have any idea what's going on? Are we being formerly greeted and invited to lunch... or are we lunch?"

OOC: Michael Aarons is used with permission
Cris was once again on duty in sickbay. The current patient was Angelique Hudsen aged 3 years 1 month who had had her fingers slammed in a cupboard door leading to three broken broken fingers and one finger that somehow hadn't been broken but had been bruised right down to the bone. The damage was being worked on and Angelique was currently enjoying a bowl of lime jelly with custard and sprinkles.
The doors hissed open and Petty Officer Wanderman walked in he had Commander Aaron's arm across his shoulders. The Commander was sweating heavily.
"I found him wandering near his quarters." Commander Aarons looked up when Wanderman stopped. He took in sickbay. "Greetings all, do you want to come to a party?"
Cris went to the Commander's side. He was obviously running a fever. With K'Lana's help they got him on to a biobed. He needed fluids now. His temperature was 40.89, no wonder he wasn't completely rational.
He put his arm around her shoulders and leaned forward, apparently attempting to give her a kiss on the cheek. However, as he nearly fell off the biobed she never found out what his intentions were.
Once Commander Aarons was laying down and started on fluid replacement he passed out. Cris was not surprised his system was severely stressed she was actually impressed that he was ambulatory and at least partially coherent.

Not a linguist by a long shot, Nathan had no idea what to make of the sounds and movements of the Nahrid. He kept close to Kay, needing her to be calm for the sake of everyone in the team. "You're doing great," he encouraged her over a private line, while trying his best to sound optimistic.
He didn't like the idea of being lunch anymore than anyone else might, and he too felt a little ill eat ease in the large room. "Remember, our air supply doesn't last forever, at some point we do need to surface and exchange tanks if we wish to remain. Or someone has to send down extra oxygen to us and we can help eachother exchange them."
(Kay)
From the submersible shuttlecraft, Corporal Mitchell did his best to keep tabs on the away team, while taking the necessary readings that he was told to take. He turned to look at Delik. "Well, I suppose we should explore these waters, and make sure things remain safe for the away team. But if you've any suggestions, I'll gladly hear them."
(Delik)
"If I seem overly worried though, I expect you to tell me. I'm not really liking the fact that my husband is out there, totally dependent on just a tank of air, and the experience of an officer who is afraid of being under water. Not to mention a species that we have no way of knowing whether they are friendly or hostile, because we can't understand them."
(Delik)

Continuing
Cris did not see Commander Aarons wake up and get off the biobed. She did however hear Nurse Tiller.
"No Commander you can't leave"
Cris looked over to see Commander Aarons striding out of sickbay. It would have been a perfectly effective exit, marred only by the diminutive Mariah Tiller latched on to one of his arms and towing a medical trolley behind her. Obviously she had been trying to stop him leaving, the trolley rolled over Ensign VeKel's foot as he knelt sorting out the contents of one of the storage cupboard. The thud his head made as it connected with the top of the cupboard was clearly audible and made Cris wince.
She moved to intercept Commander Aarons. Cris would afterwards swear that she saw a smile flickering across the Commander's face as he scooped up the bowl of jelly and custard left to one side while Angelique had a nap. He took a step towards her. It was such an audacious act that Cris's brain could not really process it. She had time to close her eyes before the bowl full of yellow and green goo was smashed with some degree of force into her face. There was a loud crash.
She peeled the bowl off her face feeling the unpleasant sensation of custard sliding down the back of her neck. Cris wiped her eyes and was pleased to see that Mari and K'Lana had managed to catch hold of Commander Aarons and were in the process of escourting him back to bed. His skin had developed a greyish tinge, obviously he wasn't as recovered as he had thought.
Lorna walked into sickbay and blinked. Cris was standing near the doorway dripping bright yellow goo and lumps of something translucent and green that Lorna didn't want to think about too hard. Ensign VeKel was staring somewhat vacantly off into space and rubbing his head. The contents of one of the emergency trolleys was scattered across most of the floor. Three of her nurses seemed to be wrestling someone on to one of the biobeds and a little girl was sitting on another bed watching what was going on.
"What's going on?" Lorna looked round the room again. "On second thoughts, why do you get things cleaned up and sorted out and then tell me what was going on."

Wildly aware of her most basic autonomic function, Kay breathed, trying to slow her inhale and exhale cycle to something that imitated normal. Breathing; something so simple, so taken for granted was now so thought-driven.
The Nahrid continued their hostile-looking posture as Commander Apirana worked furiously at translating the barrage of inaudible sound still rippling around them all. The itching-powder-feeling caused by the Nahrid’s language, coupled with the claustrophobic aura of the room, and topped off by the cherry of Kay’s growing panic, were all contributing to her feeling like she was going to faint.
“You’re doing great,” Nathan’s words soothed.
It was as if he knew just when Kay was about to lose it. She smiled weakly at him and consciously took in a long breath. Her elongated exhale fogged her view for a few seconds which caused her fear to rise again.
“A greeting!...” Pai nearly shouted. “It’s only a welcome or a formalized greeting.”
The Commander’s words couldn’t have come at a better time. Kay visibly relaxed at the news and the color returned to her cheeks. She turned slowly in a circle, trying to address each of the Nahrid and looking into their large, black-blue eyes. “We thank you for your kind welcome and hope to become your friends.”
“Friends?”
Kay spun around to face a Nahrid who had moved in close to her, its huge eyes blinked at her. Its head titled slightly to one side, strangely reminiscent of human behavior when waiting for an answer.
“Yes,” Kay answered, backpedaling a bit to keep some distance between them. “We are very interested in being your friends.”
“Then why do you have others who are searching our city? They have not been greeted. They have screeeech-scraaaaw-blurp-blurp without greeting us first.”
The UT was finally kicking in, thanks to the very skilled Commander, and it was obvious the Nahrid knew about the shuttlesub investigating nearby. And they seemed none too pleased about it.
