Name: Jolene Isandra Hawthorne
Rank: Lieutenant
Species: Human
Place of Birth: Manchester, Greater Manchester, England
Current Posting: USS Victory
Qualifications: Engineering
Personal Details
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: April 12th, 2370
Appearance:
Jolene carries herself in a slim, athletic build due to her love of running and sports in general. Her smooth complexion matches well with her brown hair that she wears just below her shoulders. While on duty, there are two staples to the young engineer. First, her hair is always up off her shoulders but never in the same fashion. While some prefer to keep a tidy bun or ponytail, Jo just usually ties it up in whatever fashion suits her. Second, her uniform is always fresh, but the same cannot be said of her engineering jacket. While off-duty, she has a blatant disregard for her physical appearance, which can be a bit of a shock to those who only know her as "Lieutenant Hawthorne".
History:
Background:
Jolene Isandra Hawthorne was born on April 12th, 2370 to Hugh and Regina Hawthorne who were members of the local nobility in England. She was a surprise to her parents, as they had not planned on having another child after dealing with raising four sons, the oldest of which was fourteen at the time Jolene was born. However, they were happily surprised to welcome their first daughter to the world. She was born without the trademark blue eyes and blond hair of the Hawthorne's, which set her apart very distinctly from her siblings. Due to her unorthodox look, they chose an unorthodox name for her. Jolene meaning, "He will add" in reference to the Hawthorneβs ever-expanding family. Isandra comes from the Greek, meaning "powerful woman", and of course, she bears her family name.
Her early life was one of royalty and privilege, although the Hawthorne's had a different view of what that meant altogether compared to most. They had a family estate located out in the countryside of England, upon which they raised a variety of livestock and crops. It was the opinion of Lord Hawthorne that by learning to work in and of the ground, his children would learn valuable lessons about life and how it should be led. Quite literally, it kept the Hawthorne children grounded and down to earth, despite their royal heritage. However, the children each had their own subtleties that showed through. Hugh, Jr. and Harry, the oldest two brothers, were identical twins that were constantly pranking and playing practical jokes on both their siblings and the farmhands that lived nearby. Robert, the next oldest and Jolene's favorite incidentally, was much more reserved and delved into literature and the arts as he grew older. The youngest son's name was Mark, and he was every bit the physical specimen his father was, excelling at many of the same sports that Lord Hawthorne had claimed records in during his youth.
Growing up with five men in the house, Jolene had the option to either cling to her mother for a sense of security and safety, or delve out into the world with her brothers. She chose the latter, becoming a twenty-fourth century tomboy. She was always to be found adventuring and running about, which she soon became very adept at. Her brothers often picked her first when they split up to form teams for sports simply because she could outrun every one of them. Schooling was done in the home, and it was clear that Jolene would not conform to the traditional mold of a housekeeper or passive mistress. Instead, she routinely outperformed her brothers' marks on math, the physical sciences, as well as astronomy. One by one, the Hawthorne children left for San Francisco to join Starfleet (all except for Robert that is), leaving just the middle son and their youngest daughter at home.
When she turned fifteen years old, her parents allowed her to purchase a hoverbike that she had desperately wanted ever since seeing it a year previous. Black and grey in colour, it was an old, worn-down machine in need of a lot of tender care and restoring. Luckily, Jolene proved to be up for the challenge, saving credits here and there, buying parts where she could and fabricating those she could not. In little more than seven months, she had the old bike restored and in running condition. Nervous and a bit apprehensive, her parents allowed her to take it out for her first ride. Even Jo (her nickname, previously established by her friends) was a bit nervous, wondering if she actually welded and sealed everything to the required specifications. Luckily for her, the hoverbike performed flawlessly, and she soon became the terror of the streets on her black and grey bike. However, word of her prowess with mechanical tools and her seemingly natural talent for fixing things began to spread around, and soon, she had a small business running by the time she turned sixteen. All of this left very little time for what many would consider a proper social life for the daughter of a Lord, but she never missed any of it. Anytime she became jealous of her friends' stories of their dates, she would simply hop on her bike and ride until she cleared her mind.
Having already completed the equivalent schooling of a grade school graduate, Jolene's sixteenth birthday came with a huge decision to make. Either she could stay and assist her favorite brother Robert with running the estate, or she could leave and follow her other brothers' footsteps in joining Starfleet. Jo could not imagine being stuck in one place for her entire life, so she packed up and moved to San Francisco, enrolling in the Prerequisite Academy in 2386. Her life lessons from her hard work in the ground soon paid off, as she adjusted extremely well from her life of royalty to the relative equality that all of the recruits shared. The toughest adjustment for Jo was living in a dormitory around the year without the comfort of her home and especially without her home cooking. This is where her unhealthy eating habits began, as she would eat voraciously if she found something to be appetizing, but not at all if she disliked the cuisine or she was too busy doing something else. Luckily for her, she was a compulsive snacker, so nothing serious ever came out of her eating issues.
Jolene found the Prerequisite Academy to be below her level of aptitude, and she flew through the required courses, passing at the top of her class. Passing the entrance exam for the real Academy on her first try, she proudly told her adviser that she wished to pursue a career in Engineering, at which her adviser raised an eyebrow. Commodore James Finch had a good reason to, as since the advent of the Engineering discipline, the vast majority of its inhabitants were male. Finch warned Jolene of what was to come, as the recruits were roomed together with respect to their career paths. She barely batted an eye as she dared the Commodore to come up with anything worse than growing up with four Hawthorne boys. At the recognition of the name "Hawthorne," Commodore Finch's visage showed a flash of horror. Apparently, Hugh and Harry had left quite the legacy - one that Jolene would never hear the end of until she graduated from the Academy.
Her first year of classes ensured her that she indeed wanted to become an Engineer. Often made fun of for her accent, it was here at the Academy that she became more withdrawn to those she was unacquainted with. Ignoring several requests for dates from men and women alike, she moved forward with her studies, focusing herself. She found the study of propulsion systems and power generation to be particularly fascinating, and this is the field in which she specialized in. Jolene did however find some very close friends at the Academy with whom she keeps in contact, even to this day. Heather Neal and John Cooper were fellow engineering students and the three of them terrorized friends, foes, and tests alike. They held three of the top eight graduation ranks among them, with Heather graduating at the top of her class, Jolene in fourth, and John in eighth. With Heather, Jolene, and another woman by the name of S'lin graduating in the top ten of the Engineering Department, the class of 2391 set a record that still stands for women graduating at the top of any field.
Alas, Jo's glory days at the Academy were over, and she was faced with the sobering hangover of applying for her first post. The drawback to her friends being top graduates was that the chances of Starfleet affording a single vessel two or three of its best students was next to zero. Indeed, Jolene was assigned to the Sovereign class USS Independence-B. Heather stayed and took up a research and development position, and John was sent to Starbase 24 to begin his career. The Independence was captained by Gregory Radich, a cold Terran who showed no signs of gratitude or affection towards anyone. He expected the best, and nothing but the best. Jo struggled at first on the ship as she had to maintain a professional demeanor at all points in time. Radich even enforced a strict dress code while off-duty, a no-alcohol policy, and limited holodeck usage to training simulations only. To make matters worse, Jo's department chief, Chief Engineer Timothy Burchfield developed a serious affection for her which she refused to return. This placed her further under the magnifying glass, and she was often punished for the smallest missteps that others would get away with. Such suffocating restrictions did not sit well with Jolene, and after her two year assignment was up, she bolted back for Earth.
It was now 2393, and many of the Galaxy class starships were returning to Utopia for their major, mid-life overhaul. Seeing an opportunity to become acquainted with the latest and greatest in engineering technology, she signed on and was accepted as the Propulsion Specialist aboard the USS Panther City-A. Finding the policies aboard the ship much more suited to her style, Jo began to flourish and show signs of her engineering genius, starting with the ship's first warp run after the refit. The Panther City set a new speed record for the ship's engine configuration, all thanks to Jo's algorithm that found a way to somehow further compress the stream of matter/anti-matter that powered the ship's engines. Her career began to slowly take off as she rose through the ranks, wearing the title of Engineering Officer before becoming appointed the Assistant Chief of Engineering in 2396. Her raw, unrefined style and manner of solving the ship's engineering concerns earned her respect from her superiors, and it was a recommendation from a now Rear Admiral James Finch that Jolene was transferred over to Starbase 47.
From there, Jolene was appointed as the Chief Engineering Officer, her first position as department head, aboard the Intrepid-Class USS Grayson. During her tenure there, she was promoted once again to Lieutenant. At the end of the Grayson's mission, Jo was once again reassigned, this time to the USS Victory.
