Ghes was perched on his seat, leaning forwards toward the viewscreen. He'd accepted Commander Matthew's recommendation to some extent. He had decided not to go down to the planet, having left Saryn and O'Mannin alone in the transporter room. The initial away team would be kept minimal, so they could gauge the planet's environment and what was needed in subsequent visits.
"Where are they?" he asked for a report, hands steepled before him.
"The away team are approximately two kilometres from the beam down point." The officer looked between her console and the screen which showed the glowing red atmosphere and tempestuous tectonic conditions. "They appear to have stopped. There's a concentration of lifesigns nearby, roughly four hundred humanoids, fleeing from superheated air north of their position."
"Too many," Ghes mused. "Perhaps Saryn could treat two or three, get an idea of their physiology. If there are more injuries we can send extra medics." Besides, he thought, he didn't much like having Saryn down there with just one security officer. It wasn't so much the harm the vulcan could do to their chances of negotiation, it was what he could do to himself. Something had seemed wrong about the doctor earlier... physically or mentally, it didn't matter.
"Sir, O'Mannin has requested a beam out," the same officer reported. "He and Saryn are being transported straight to sickbay. O'Mannin reports Dr Saryn is having difficulty breathing."
There was a long pause. Ghes climbed out of his chair, making for the turbolift.
"No, sir. You should let the medical personnel do their job," Matthew stated, doing his work as first officer admirably.
Ghes wiped his face of perspiration, coming back to the front of the bridge. "You're right, Commander. I've been down there too much recently." He glanced at his acting XO once, nodded, then retook the command chair. He hit a button on the arm panel to begin composing a message to the planet, to inform the governing body of the situation. The tenuous link he'd formed was now under strain due to these stop-start relief efforts. Diplomacy was of utmost importance. The Enzio couldn't be seen to get too close to this government, when there was the insectoid species just one planet out, waiting to pounce on the culture they'd already devastated with the planetwide temporal flux. Were the insectoids also responsible for the weapon that'd just annihilated 5% of the world's crust?
Half an hour went by with no news from sickbay, but Tiana called the bridge, bringing unfortunate tidings that the temporal fluxes and such what were causing unwanted stresses on the planet itself. This world was a cataclysm waiting inside an undreamt nightmare. The number of possible realities, temporal uncertainties, were increasing, and equivalently Ghes's options were running down. Soon he would be left with but one choice.
"One team has already been down to the planet, Tiana. Saryn became ill and they've returned. We still need to negotiate with these people, but in light of your report I've decided that we'll leave as soon as there's another temporal incident." The bridge crew were listening in. "We'll withdraw and evaluate before heading to the insectoid world. I believe there's still a way we might negotiate with the humanoids, even if their world is destroyed."
"Sir, their government's requesting assistance again. If we beam aid down now, it may smooth the way for full negotiations."
"Negative, Commander," Ghes replied to Matthew. "I won't send another team til we ascertain atmospheric safety. That might be why Saryn couldn't breathe."

"Negative, Commander," Ghes replied to Matthew. "I won't send another team til we ascertain atmospheric safety. That might be why Saryn couldn't breathe."
Tiana listened to the conversation on the bridge. There had been nothing on the sensors that could have caused respiratory problems but clearly something had. Planets in a solar system would be very consistent in terms of initial constituents so what was here could be on the other worlds as well. Then again, conditions down there could have caused all sorts of things to occur. She would operate under the assumption that there was something on the planet that had externally affected Saryn. If there was an internal affect on him then sickbay would presumably be notifying her very soon.
She left Nick to continue monitoring the planet and went to find his sister. If anyone knew atmospheric chemistry it was Kayln Compton. Actually given the circumstances she would likely need both Drs Compton to sort this one out.

Tired and dejected, Commander Walters leaned against the side of the turbolift and closed his eyes for a moment of rest. For the past several hours he had been glued to the warp core controls trying to figure out how to keep it running despite the sudden inclusion of anti-chronitons into the mix. Main Engineering had been in such chaos that he couldn’t even respond to several requests from the Bridge. In fact, it was only because of a sudden breakthrough that made it possible for him to leave Engineering for the first time.
As the turbolift came to a stop and deposited him on the Bridge Will tried to straighten his uniform a bit while walking over to the engineering console. The ensign manning it started to rise but Will waved it off. “Just grabbing a quick status check.” he explained. Looking at the readouts he was glad to see that things hadn’t collapsed in the time it took for him to get to the Bridge, and it looked like H’riss was a little ahead of schedule in getting systems back up to full.
“Captain?” the engineer called over to The Chair. “I think we’ve got things back under control down there.” he announced when Ghes gave him his attention. “To say this ‘little wrinkle’ has been a massive headache would be an understatement. We started losing warp power because the anti-chronitons have essentially reversed the antimatter reaction. We tried filtering them out but nothing worked. Then someone had the idea of just working around them for the time being.”
Answering the obvious question, “To put it simply, if the new particles reversed the reaction, we work backwards to compensate. It took some rewriting of equations and some massive counterintuitive thinking, but it’s actually working. Unless something else goes wrong we should be back up to full power within the hour, and we’re already getting set up for handling any other systems that get contaminated.”
Moving on, “As for where the anti-chronitons came from, we worked on that too. Despite the initial obvious thought they’re not from this crazy temporally-deranged region of space.” He frowned and lowered his voice a bit. “It’s the damned temporal shields the DTI gave us. Anti-chroniton generation is a side effect, but it’s slow enough that we never noticed it until there were enough of them to start affecting systems. In order to fix the problem we’ll have to take them offline.”

Breathing was becoming more difficult by the second and the feeling of being locked inside a suit didn't help matters either. He just didn't feel he was breathing, and for some reason apparently his lungs weren't registering the intake of air. To make matters worse, he couldn't get his gloves off, he couldn't feel whether he was touching anything at all. Floundering like a fish on dry land, he just stood there, trying to draw Trevor's attention. "Sickbay," he breathed, though it was barely audible. "Sa...vin..."
“Yes… right,” Trevor blurted then turned on his heels, “we need help here, Savin The Doctor’s having trouble breathing!” Trevor was a little beside himself. He had little if any first aid experience and the lack of his breathing was puzzling to him. “Your gloves,” he questioned pointing at the man’s hands, “you want them off?”
Saryn merely nodded though there was plain fear visible in his eyes. He watched as Savin approached, looking so smart in his rank-less uniform. "Father?" the younger Vulcan asked, as he got closer. "Sir, can you tell me what happened?" THe latter was directed at Trevor while he pulled out the scanning wand and waved it over the older Vulcan. "Get him out of that suit, and on to bed three. Quickly!"
The security chief took in a deep breath as he reached for the patient's gloved right hand, "we were down on the planet and all of a sudden he seemed to stop breathing. I can't tell you much more." Within a matter of a few seconds The human had the man out of the suit and assisted onto the biobed. The activity was anything but relaxing, not that it was hard work but rather the stress of the situation was beginning to creep into Trevor's mind. "He was in a protective suit I doubt it had anything to do with the environment," he offered trying to stay available yet out of the way of the professionals.
Keeping his eyes on the security chief, Savin nodded in understanding. "You do not seem to be suffering any averse effects so I am in agreement, it is not something that is on the surface." He shifted his attention briefly to his instruments, before looking back up at Trevor. "He is very ill...and your return to the ship may well have saved his life for now. I am going to put him on a respirator, which will breathe for him. I am also going to place him in an induced coma for now."
"Induced coma," Trevor asked worried, "that doesn't sound good." He looked from Savin to the man who had been on the planet with him then back again, "I better notify the Captain."
"Sorry sir, I did not catch that," Savin replied as he pressed a hypospray against his father's throat. Immediately, the indicators on the monitor started to drop until their lowest levels, while the young doctor set up the intubation process with the assistance of a nurse. "I mean, I did not hear what you said sir, literally."
"I," the security chief began again, I merely said I should tell the Captain." He took in a deep breath, "you may need to go with me if we have to go back to the planet."
"That is entirely possible however in that event we need to device a way to communicate as I cannot hear a communicator. I require something with a monitor and or text function." Savin sighed. "I am deaf, Ensign O'Mannin."
"Yes," he said, "I remember that from my physical." He rubbed his chin thinking about the situation, "I'll get with engineering and see what we can get together."
"Apologies, I cannot think clearly, when my father is injured."At that moment a white haired, pale faced girl came bursting into sickbay. "Father!" she screamed as she collided with Trevor, sending them both to the deck.
Trevor only caught a glimpse of the white haired girl before plummeting towards the floor. He was more than a little puzzled as to who and why she was there. Her words before the collision didn't seem to help much. It made him wonder if he was the father though that seemed an impossibility. As his mind tried to take in his new situation it caught sight of a single vial that must have rolled to its present position under a nearby cabinet. The human turned himself on his side from his prone position and looked at the girl, "careful," he chuckled, "you must be Doctor Savin's daughter," he offered as he made an attempt to stand.
The girl gazed at him with pale blue eyes, offering a smile which revealed small fangs. "No sir, Doctor Savin is my brother," she said as she scrambled back to her feet and moved to Savin's side. The young Vulcan wrapped his arms around her but kept his wrists well away from her mouth for now. She looked scared, despite her smile but he didn't want to risk being bitten at this time even when normally he allowed it. "Apologies ensign, this is my adopted sister Numike. She will not bite you, you have her promise." He looked down at the girl. "Does he not?" The pale girl nodded solemnly. "I promise." She pointed at something in his hand. "What'd you find? Will it help father?"
"I'm glad to hear that, " he said finishing pulling himself up to his feet, "with those teeth I imagine you could do a really good job of it." The security chief had seen the fangs and had been further puzzled by them but had not immediate thought they were of any danger to himself. They seemed to indicate that she was a member of another species other than human but he wasn't familiar with which one. Vampires were not something he knew much about. Such idle tales of ancient earth were not the topic conversation among the humans in the failed colony and the Cardassians didn't know that much about them either. "It is nice to meat you anyway," he offered then turned is attention to the deaf man, "doctor, I noticed a small vial that must have rolled under that cabinet over there." He offered pointing towards the piece of furniture and nodded.
Accepting the vial, Savin studied it, recognizing it's contents. "It belongs to the supply my father regrettably destroyed," he stated quietly, "but I will have to examine it to confirm." He held it out to Trevor again. "You may wish to hold on to it for safe keeping. If my father discovers it here, he may choose to destroy it and I cannot allow that to happen." He took a quick glance over his shoulder. "Though he is in no condition to do so. Do you know what happened sir, that he is in this condition?" Behind him, nurses were making the chief medical officer comfortable, while hooking him up to all sorts of equipment and restraining him to the bed just in case he might hurt himself in one way or another. "Can it have anything to do with the destruction of these medications?"
Trevor reached his right hand out and accepted the tube back with a nod, "I only know we were looking for a good place to set up to offer our aid from. I found someone who looked as if he was in uniform and directing the chaos to some extent. When I said I was going to go talk to him when Saryns said he was having trouble breathing. I removed his helmet as the atmosphere was breathable and he was already trying to do that. I also requested the beam out to sickbay." He sighed and took a closer look at the vial, "other than that I really can't tell you.
"I will have a nurse continuously monitor him. My father is never ill, rather not this ill and I am very concerned. He seems to have lost his ability to touch, or rather his sense of touch and it appears to be affecting not only his skin, but every organ in his body. According to the scan, his lungs function just fine but there is also something terribly amiss. The same goes for his stomach. It is almost as if he touched, inhaled and digested the same substance and I have this terrifying feeling that it may be that fluid you hold in your hand." He shook his head. "I dare not analyse it myself, for fear of it happening to me too. And my worst fear is being rendered senseless."
The security chief nodded, "understood, should I notify the science department and have them look into it?"
"Yes, that would be a wise decision ensign. Please do, I am certain Commander Cet will be very pleased to receive a sample." He looked down at the girl who had wrapped her arms around his waist and placed a hand on her pale blonde hair. "Numike will look after father, along with the nurse. I will assume responsibility of sickbay until ordered otherwise. Thank you for bringing him to sickbay sir, it may have saved his life."
"I'll get this over to the science department right away," Trevor offered, He looked down at the girl that had run into him and offered a smile, "hopefully next time I see you I won't be tackled."
"I didn't intend to sir," the girl promised, "and perhaps next time, it'll be in the gym. Savin and I train a lot."
The human smiled, "that sound like a lot more fun than sickbay," he said with a smile. He nodded again at Savin but said nothing turning immediately and heading towards the exit door with the vial in hand.

“... It’s the damned temporal shields the DTI gave us. Anti-chroniton generation is a side effect, but it’s slow enough that we never noticed it until there were enough of them to start affecting systems. In order to fix the problem we’ll have to take them offline.”
"Unbelievable," was Ghes's instant response. He looked aghast as he turned away from the CEO, scanning the bridge as if searching for some reassurance. "The very thing we're using to protect against temporal incursions is the same that's riddling us with anti-chronitons?"
It was of course, a rhetorical question. The answer could only be affirmative. Chief engineers, indeed Starfleet officers, didn't make mistakes like that. Ghes slid into his chair and conferred with second officer Matthew. They came to an agreement - it was time to leave orbit.
"Take the temporal shields offline, Petty Officer." Ghes directed the NCO at the tactical console, manning the station while O'Mannin was assisting the stricken CMO in sickbay. The Deltan officer did as instructed.
Ghes faced Walters, his eyes speaking a thousand words - far more than anything he could say that would make sense as a set of orders. "You'll have to find a way to fix those shields. Of course I don't need to remind you that every second they're - "
The ship rocked as if caught in a rogue wave on the high sea. Ghes hit the deck, along with half the bridge staff. The vessel seemed to crack at the seams, consoles creaking and sparking as multi-directional forces tore through the structure attempting to shear the duranium. The CO frowned as he spat Denobulan blood from his mouth. He thought they'd fixed that problem.
"What was that?" someone asked, as they drew themselves up.
"That was me taking the shields offline," the Deltan tactical NCO spoke tentatively, after a lengthy pause. Ghes spun, demanding an explanation. "It seems there were certain temporal... instabilities, shifts in causality the shields had been compensating for. Taking them offline has affected our personal timeline since we arrived in the system."
Ghes rubbed his eyes. "Right. I see..." He looked around. "That's why we must leave planetary orbit. We'll climb to a wide elliptical orbit of the Harlequin star, roughly at the radius of that asteroid belt. That'll lessen the chances of being subjected to a temporal incursion while our shields are down."
"Walters, get to work on the shields. Get Galwyn to assist you if she's able. Commander Matthew, you have the bridge. I have a date with a cargo bay."
<Tag Walters & All>
A despoiled hall, like a city of splintered glass, rose ominously before Ghes. The lift whirred to a halt and he was deposited on the lower level of the cargo bay. In truth, it was just a little under half of the cargo bay that'd been trashed. The rest lay untouched and unmoved, illicit weaponry and maintenance tools dormant in their containers, blissfully ignorant of the kaleidoscopic carnage that'd been enacted next to them a number of hours ago.
It would revolt him, if he didn't feel the smallest amount of empathy for Dr Saryn and the actions he'd taken. His commbadge chirped. "Captain, this is Walsh. We're receiving a hail from the surface. The administration demands to know why we've ceased our relief effort and broken orbit."
"Thanks, Lieutenant. Tell Councillor Talt I will hold conference with him in under an hour... Also," Ghes added quickly, bending to collect an unmarked vial from the floor. He rolled it between his thumb and forefinger, "Inform him we'll be beaming down another team very shortly."

The turbolift doors parted and Trevor stepped into the moving room. He turned as his habit was to face the doors as they closed behind him glanced down at the medication he needed to deliver to the science department. Generally he would have kept it for evidence. The Doctor should face charges for such an act of destruction of Federation property and jeopardizing a mission but the Vulcan was now going to be placed in medically induced coma in hopes they could save his life and his death would benefit no one, at least that Trevor knew.
“Please state destination,” the female computer voice asked.
“Science department,” the human stated abruptly rolling his eyes more upset at being distracted than at the computer.
The lift began to move towards its destination the Chief of security looked up at the ceiling just as the room rocked. Trevor had little time to react as he was thrown to his left against the wall and down onto the floor. He realized the danger and did his best to protect the vial and sighed when he realized the motion had stopped and the vial was still intact.
He pulled himself to his feet and the doors parted to reveal the corridor outside the science department, “O’Mannin to Bridge,” he began, “what is going on?” Trevor stood awaiting a response as he might need to head to the tactical station to address whatever had just occurred.

“O’Mannin to Bridge,” he began, “what is going on?”
"It was a temporal..." Ghes trailed off, looking cluelessly at the on duty science officer. While he'd used to be one in himself, quantum mechanics and causality hadn't been his areas of expertise.
"Lieutenant O'Mannin, we hit were hit by a wave consisting of temporal instabilities in the zero-point fluctuations of the hard vacuum in the region - " the science officer began.
The CO, amused, rose a hand from the Captain's chair to silence the assistant. "Let's not blind our new recruit with science just yet, Lieutenant. He's a tactical officer remember. Everything is under control for the moment Lieutenant O'Mannin," Ghes addressed the open comm line again, "You're presence on the bridge isn't required now, but I'll keep you informed of any developments.
"I understand from your turbolift coordinates that you're en route to the science bay. I suggest you keep your appointment with Commander Galwyn and then report back. The CScO probably won't appreciate having more dumped on her plate, as the humans like to say, but - with the CMO incapacitated and the XO on leave - we are short staffed."
<Tag O'Mannin / Galwyn Cet>
"Also, be prepared to take another trip to the surface. The world may be cracking up, but we may need to assist with refugees." At this point, Ghes leaving the comm line open, addressed the whole bridge crew, "This is a delicate diplomatic situation. The humanoids have asked for help, but they're also at war with the insectoids. We follow Starfleet procedure (Ghes had an idea that Saryn may scoff of that last statement) and give help where it is requested, but do not give any more than we are asked to in affairs we have no business in."
"But the insectoids may have instigated the fallout on the humanoid world. We already know they've put the humanoid planet in a state of quantum flux," Matthew interjected.
Ghes conceded the point. "With them we need a different approach. We need to be appear hospitable and receptive, but also challenging, without quite demanding to know what they have or haven't done to the humanoid world." He sat back into his chair, a hand under his chin and seemingly idly pondered the next course of action - but such was only his manner. "For the moment we need to keep our distance, in the case of another temporal incident. I don't want to suddenly find I never existed, if you get me.
"But, let's saying we can engage in diplomacy with the 'potentially' more warlike insectoids... Who's up for it?"
<Tag All>
Meanwhile, deck 12...
Deflector control emitted a low ominous tone, throbbing, ascdending and descending in its utilisation of its vastly complex network of power systems, that protected the ship from interstellar dust that - at warp speed - had the potential to put holes in the ship the size of doors.
The deflector, Ensign Haparis knew, also had the ability to emit wide-angled beams of a multitude of different particle constituents, in myriad combinations. Unfortunately, with the anti-chroniton interference in the region, the use of such emissions was fraught with danger. Even the best minds in the Federation wouldn't be able to tell what quirks of physics would occur, if anti-chronitons came into contact with the types of exotic matter a deflector could conjure up.
But Haparis did have an idea. A tetryon beam aimed at that asteroid field - which cut off the inner humanoid and insectoid worlds from the outer planet, the mysterious, cold glib of a planetoid - might illuminate the Enzio as to some of the asteroids' properties.
He'd make the proposition to the Ops officer or the Chief Engineer, and see if his theory held any weight in the eyes of the senior staff. If he was right, he would be able to show that the asteroid field hadn't been a phenomenon in the system until very recently. And this wasn't thinking galactic timescales - a rough coagulation of planetary matter forming over several hundreds of millennia - but literally the last few months!

Ghes entered sickbay some hours later. The Enzio had pushed into a much higher orbit by now, almost passing into a wider elliptic trajectory of the Harlequin star itself. This would, or should, keep them out of range of the temporal excursions that'd plagued them since their arrival in the system.
"Savin," the Denobulan addressed the vulcan as spritely as possible. "Is your father stilll...?"
One look at the biobed confirmed the situation for Ghes. The man was stretched out on the primary biobed, his domain that he ran now becoming perhaps his only chance for salvation.
"How is his condition... I understand he's lost his sense of touch?" Ghes's question was neutral and forthright, but the thought of what he'd put to the Doctor's son was terrifying to the Denobulan. While Denobulans - like vulcans - refrained from physical contact with non-intimates, to have that sensation removed utterly would be a dismaying blow to Ghes's senses. Touch - when with intimates, family, his one remaining wife - was one of the most highly-valued means of Denobulans's interaction with reality, and one of the most meaningful ways of conveying Denobulan emotion.
The young Vulcan's expression was grave as he nodded in confirmation. "He has lost all manner of sense," he clarified, "he does not feel. He does not know when he touches something, but he also does not know that he breathes. I have ordered an induced coma but I can wake him up on your orders. He is very sick captain, and I believe it has to do with the medications he has destroyed. It is affecting his skin, but also his airways and his organs. I presume some came in contact with his skin, but also through inhalation and digestion. I cannot be certain, but it is my theory."
Ghes was somewhat stunned. He'd heard the report on Saryn, but hadn't known the extent of the affliction; he certainly hadn't envisaged something like this happening. A small, malignant part of his mind told him that this is what Saryn deserved, for his destruction of the bargaining tools, but he quickly dismissed it.
"I'm sorry, Savin." Ghes leaned on the biobed slightly, surveying the comatose CMO. "Is there some way to tell for sure how this happened? Have the assistant CMO study the inventory of medicines. See if any of the pathogens are capable of causing such symptoms..."
"I do not know yet. Perhaps it is something that affects just him specifically, or maybe Vulcans in general. We are already looking into it. And captain.." The younger Vulcan hesitated before producing a small vial with a pink-ish fluid. "This was recovered, it apparently escaped destruction so if needed I have no doubt we can replicate it as soon as we know it's contents. However, given my father's condition, I am very hesitant to do so."
Ghes eyed the vial... "Take steps to see to its replication," he said, after not too long. "But handle with extreme care. Naturally, as soon as you discover the contents of the vial and are in a position to replicate it inform the bridge or someone in authority."
In all likelihood, the vial would turn out to be insignificant; valueless as a tool of negotiation with the Harlequin species'. But while the chance remained it might have some use, Ghes felt a strange compulsion to have it multiplied, despite the risks to the sickbay staff responsible for the replication, and to the whole crew.
"We're currently maintaining our distance from the humanoid planet," he said to Savin, preparing to leave, "I want to minimise the chance of temporal incursion, especially if you're studying that pathogen. One more thing, Savin..." Ghes almost felt awkward, "Could you wake your father? If only momentarily."
Reluctantly, the young man nodded. He put the vial away, out of sight, then prepared a hypospray. "I do not know what condition he will be in, or for how long. It was for his safety that I made this decision. I will put him under again when his health is compromised." Carefully, he pressed the tip of the device against the older Vulcan's throat and pressed the release trigger. A soft his indicated the fluid was shot home.
On the bed, Saryn stirred and opened his eyes. They searched sickbay until finally settling on the Denobulan captain. "Captain..." The words sounded muffled due to the mask that covered his nose and mouth.
"Saryn," Ghes nodded, "You understand what has happened? I'm sorry for this." He moved closer, Savin moving back so that the Captain could better hear the muted CMO's response. "I can empathise with your reasons for destroying the medicines. While I wasn't able to support your decision - and I'm not sure I'd have done the same thing in your position - I can certainly understand why you did it."
Surprise registered on the Vulcan's face. "You can?" The answer was wheezed out and barely audible through the rebreather mask.
"You should've listened to me," he smiled slightly, but instantly regretted the quip. "You don't deserve to have this happen to you, all this for standing for your principles. Get better, Doctor." He nodded once at Savin, who was wielding the hypospray.
Before Saryn could respond, Saryn had pressed the hypospray against his throat and the doctor's readings started to drop again, indicating a comatose state. "We will get him better," the younger man promised. "And I am certain if able, he will make amends, but with something more...suitable."
"Thank you, Savin," Ghes said, facing the young man. "I'll return to the bridge now. Keep me informed of your father's condition, and of course that vial. If you need assistance from any other departments, feel free to enlist Commanders Walters or Galwyn."
Ghes nodded and departed sickbay and returned to the bridge, where he unexpectantly encountered Lieutenant O'Mannin.

All other modifications were almost ready as well. Progress on the physical side of the alterations had been extremely easy due to the Prometheus class’s extremely adaptable deflector dish.
However most of the trouble he'd had was programing it to produce a stable tetryon field without blowing up.
It would require insulation of half the components in the grid and the inter-connecting sections of the EPS grid.

OOC: Sorry all, RL's been a bit crazy.
Tiana had been rotating her staff to make sure they got adequate meal breaks and rest. It was now her turn. She was intending to go back her quarters, get a meal, a shower and a clean uniform. She was not expecting to find Lieutenant O'Mannin standing there with an odd looking vial in his hand deep in conversation with the bridge. The conversation was no doubt related the tremor that had just run through the ship.
=/\=I understand from your turbolift coordinates that you're en route to the science bay. I suggest you keep your appointment with Commander Galwyn and then report back. The CScO probably won't appreciate having more dumped on her plate, as the humans like to say, but - with the CMO incapacitated and the XO on leave - we are short staffed.=/\=
The Captain's voice over the comm link was pretty clear. Tiana didn't appreciate handing more dumped on her plate but it was clear that it was her and her team or no one. She waited for the Lieutenant to finish his conversation.
=/\=Also, be prepared to take another trip to the surface. The world may be cracking up, but we may need to assist with refugees.=/\=
The Captain's tone on the comm link changed indicating that he was probably addressing the bridge at large.
=/\=This is a delicate diplomatic situation. The humanoids have asked for help, but they're also at war with the insectoids. We follow Starfleet procedure and give help where it is requested, but do not give any more than we are asked to in affairs we have no business in.=/\=
=/\=But the insectoids may have instigated the fallout on the humanoid world. We already know they've put the humanoid planet in a state of quantum flux,=/\= Matthew interjected.
=/\=With them we need a different approach. We need to be appear hospitable and receptive, but also challenging, without quite demanding to know what they have or haven't done to the humanoid world. For the moment we need to keep our distance, in the case of another temporal incident. I don't want to suddenly find I never existed, if you get me.=/\= Tiana was reminded that the Captain had a science background himself. =/\=But, let's saying we can engage in diplomacy with the 'potentially' more warlike insectoids... Who's up for it?=/\=
There were some further comments from the bridge crew.
When the conversation was over. Tiana turned to O'Mannin. She did not know him very well, yet. It was inevitably that working together on a starship would mean that sooner or later they would probably come to know each other quite well, particularly with Cet's ideas about defense.
"Afternoon, Leiutenant." Tiana said. "At least, it's afternoon in my personal chronology and we've all seen how relative time is round here. How can I help?"

*****************************************************
Biohazard procedure had been followed and examination was underway. Tiana now had to face facts that she wasn't really in a fit state to help anyone. She remembered an incident that had occurred while she was doing her PhD, someone had got tired in the lab and had forgotten to put a vial back in the containment field. Of course it had only contained a very mild version of Talfi 'flu which had been killed when it warmed to room temperature but it was close enough that all the researchers had been lectured. There were things that she would do tired and things that she wouldn't. Three of the five members of the bioanalysis team had just come on shift.
Tiana was now able to head back to her quarters and get that shower and meal and maybe a nap...

“Is that why my stomach has been arguing with me,” the human male stated. Trevor tilted his head trying to make a little light of the situation, “you can take this thing from me before we go for another bumpy ride.” There was only a faint smile as he lifted the vial from his side and offered the liquid filled vial to Tiana, “this is what is left of the medicine we were to deliver. It is evidence but Doctor Saryn has taken a turn for the worse. As I understand it Savin is placing him in and induced coma.”
For a moment the Chief Security office looked downwards and then back at the science officer, “please do whatever is necessary Commander. We need answers to his condition but please take all the precautions you feel are necessary to keep everyone safe while the research is performed.”

"Ah Mr O'Mannin, you've been to the science lab?"
<Tag O'Mannin>
"Ah excellent." Ghes settled back into the command chair. He was feeling in an unusually buoyant mood, given the darkness passing about them. "I ran into Savin in sickbay and he told me the pathogen vial had already been given to you, so that clears things up."
The Enzio was still manoeuvring - thrusting gently and with exacting precision - to the outer system, and the ghostly asteroid belt that ringed the Harlequins' star. The staff were still coming to a decision on how to handle the Insectoid half of the Harlequin species and their possible role in the semi-destruction of the humanoid world. Ghes's thoughts were swinging towards prepping an away team for the insectoids' HQ. They had had an invite after all, prior to arriving at the system, but in light of recent events this sort of diplomacy had to be handled very delicately.
"Mr O'Mannin..." he spoke quietly to the tactical officer, signalling him to come closer to the back of the bridge, "What would Cardassian tactics dictate in a situation like this? We have a planet that may have enacted a genocide on another - several may have taken place on both sides in fact - yet we're trying to stop this war between the two of them?" He felt no hesitation in questioning O'Mannin on his past. If it best served the situation, the officer's unique experience and expertise could become of use.
<Tag O'Mannin>
The situation was becoming untenable. The Enzio couldn't remain out here, orbiting the Harlequin star in a loose ellipse while in-system exotic physics had their play. Temporal-instigated devastation wracked one world; a shroud of mystery clouded the other - a world populated by faceless insectoids whom the Starfleet crew had no experience of.
"Something must be done..." Ghes mused, surveying the bridge. His CMO was comatical in sickbay, his head engineer was attempting to heal the warp core of its anti-chroniton affliction, and his CScO was buried in research into what was happening in the region. But they needed to gather their thoughts, collectively.
Ghes hit the intercom, "All senior staff report to the conference room for a briefing. We must debate our next course of action."

"Ah Mr O'Mannin, you've been to the science lab?"
“Yes Sir,” he offered the captain in response to his question. He nodded as he spoke but did not move passed the superior officer, “I delivered a vial of medicine to the Chief Science Officer. She has agreed to do a series of tests on it.”
"Ah excellent." Ghes settled back into the command chair. He was feeling in an unusually buoyant mood, given the darkness passing about them. "I ran into Savin in sickbay and he told me the pathogen vial had already been given to you, so that clears things up."

He felt no hesitation in questioning O'Mannin on his past. If it best served the situation, the officer's unique experience and expertise could become of use.
Trevor moved closer and leaned in to ensure he heard every word. He didn't hesitate with his reply, “they would befriend whichever they felt was the strongest and offer to assist them. After defeating the weaker and gaining the trust of the stronger party they would attack and defeat the stronger one.” He smiled a little as he continued, “remember Captain, a Cardassian tactical plan is a plan within a plan within a plan leading to a trap. I’d say at least one." The human lowered his head but not his eyes, "I would not rule out the fact that the two parties here in question might try something similar to us if we are not careful."

Tiana had slept for five hours and had eaten, showered and changed into a clean uniform she had been expecting at every minute to be interrupted by either more work or the results of one or more of the tests, that she hadn't was a good sign in terms of the work but a bad sign in term of the tests, they should have been complete by now.
She could have commed the lab but she was about to restart her work so there was no real point she could find out what was going on from those who were doing the work. As she left her quarters she noticed the message light was still blinking, she hadn't even listened to Haven's message, let alone responded to it. It had waited this long, it could go on waiting, she had more important things to do.
The lab was a hive of activity Kalyn and Nick Compton were both leaning over the central workstation and both looking animated and in need of sleep. Neither they nor the other six scientists in the room looked up when Tiana entered and walked to the center of the room.
"So, people, what's happening?"
Nick was the first to look up and register the presence of the CScO "Hi Tiana. We've got a lot of data coming in at there are definitely some patterns to the temporal damage and we starting to get somewhere with it."
Kayln picked up where her brother had left off. "We're also been analysing the agent that Dr Saryn was exposed to. It has elements of a virus and a temporal corrupted signature. It also appears to be neurologically active but we're still working on a way to counter it and reverse the damage done.
Tiana rubbed her hands together and moved to stand between Kayln and Nick this was going to be interesting.

"I would not rule out the fact that the two parties here in question might try something similar to us if we are not careful."
Ghes realised the CTSO was right. At first, he had balked at what O'Mannin seemed to be suggesting, that the Enzio should employ the Cardassians' plan within a plan tactics. Of course to take such a course of action would be a gross misuse of the Enzio's power, and a blatant violation of Starfleet's mandate. However, that the insectoids (in this case clearly the stronger faction) would use similar tactics on them was well within the realms of possibility. They'd have to tread carefully when starting the negotiation process on the insectoid planet.
"Acknowledged, Lieutenant." Ghes called for the staff briefing and O'Mannin followed him to the conference room. The Captain helped himself to a drink from the replicator, waiting for the other senior staff to arrive. "Can I get you anything, Lieutenant?" he asked Trevor sitting patiently at the table.
Ghes brought the man's drink over and took his chair at the table's end. His eyes wandered to the chronometer on the wall. The staff were taking an abnormally long time to arrive. "We could still utilise Cardassian tactics, Mr O'Mannin," he said suddenly, surprising himself almost. "If we were to make the insectoids think we were treating them as the stronger faction, then they would be more willing to listen to what we have to say. If they believe we've omitted the humanoids from the situation, they won't be as worried about our intentions."
The first of the senior staff arrived with Gheskori mid-sentence. "We can play our way in, then once they've made their concessions, we can propose a peace settlement for them with the humanoid species. It'll be harder for them to refuse once we've begun negotiations to offer them supplies and war materiel.
"Of course, we're not actually planning on giving them any weapons... That'll just be another part of our deception. As you say, Mr O'Mannin, we will have to be very careful what we say, and careful to ensure that they won't be able to deceive us in return."
They were still a few staff members short, with just four officers present including Gheskori. He started pacing, pausing now and then to gaze out the portal at the distant insectoid world. "What's taking them so long? I did make a shipwide comm...?"

"All senior staff report to the conference room for a briefing. We must debate our next course of action."
Tiana sighed and stared at the fresh cup of coffee in her hand. It was hot enough that she couldn't really gulp it down and it really wouldn't do to turn up at the staff meeting with it in hand. She returned the coffee to the replicator and took a moment to check her appearance in the polished surround. She was tidy enough.
She hurried to the conference room and was unsurprised to find that the Captain and Lt O'Mannin were all ready present. There were also drinks on the table. The Captain was talking, Tiana hurriedly took her seat and hoped she wasn't late.

"That will do," Ghes surveyed the assembled senior officers, feeling rather downcast in spirit. Seven were present. Of course, Saryn wouldn't be able to attend, his induced coma being sustained in sickbay. Still he'd thought the medical department would've arranged for an assistant to stand in at the meeting.
"Good for you to join us, Commander," Ghes chirped. Acting XO Matthew took his seat at the table, earning a mischievous grin from his CO. Perhaps Ghes wasn't feeling as despondent as he'd thought. "Right, as I was saying to O'Mannin we have a new set of tactics to put to use against the insectoid species. If we treat them as the stronger faction and don't question them on the humanoid disaster, which they may have been responsible for, I think they'll have good reason to trust us."
An officer pushed a PADD towards him. Ghes looked over it cursorily as the officer started speaking. It was the latest list of casualties from the fighting on the insectoid world. While the humanoids' homeworld had been struck with disaster, they still maintained a foothold on the insectile enemy's planet.
"Captain, if the conflict continues much longer on the insectoid planet, its inhabitants are still going to have their own agenda in dealing with us. Not to mention what the resident humanoid combatants might think of our methods of negotiation with their enemy."
"They'll be in no position to argue," Gheskori said, interlocking his fingers. "If the humanoids want to continue their war they can have no complaints at our methods of negotiation. If they want to withdraw from the insectoid world, then we can progress the negotiations without fear. In fact, withdrawing from their foothold might hasten any peace settlement."
"We can be in orbit in fifteen minutes," the helmsman said, looking around the table.
"Ah, wonderful. Some enthusiasm for our plan," Ghes beamed, "Plot a course, Ensign. Everyone, once we reach orbit, I want us assembled in the following teams. I and Commander Walters will beam down to the designated coordinates, the insectoids' HQ. There I'll meet with their negotiators to assure them that we regard theirs as the dominant faction. Walters, I'd like you to look around and try and determine if their technology shows them as capable of carrying out the temporal attack on the humanoids."
"Lieutenant O'Mannin, appoint a security detail for the away team. You will remain on the ship." The CTSO seemed about to object but Ghes waved him down, weary with this kind of misunderstanding, "I've noticed you've built some kind of rapport with the CMO's son. Perhaps if there's someone the CMO can feel more at ease talking to when he next wakes, you can do so through his son."
Ghes had almost trailed off, his eyes briefly stolen by the growing orb of wispy grey through the conference room portals. "We'll be in orbit soon. Tiana, I'd like you to liaise with Commander Matthew in his capacity as the sensors operator to comb the region for anti-chronitons. Keep tabs on the temporal stability, warn us of incursions and that sort of thing. I'd rather not be caught unawares while me and Walters are on the surface."
"Any questions, suggestions?"

The announcement caught the engineer by surprise. Only half-paying attention to the meeting, he had been thinking of the craziness down in engineering and possible solutions to the various problems. They had made some progress in the past few hours, but nothing spectacular. “Me?” he asked, head turning at the mention of his name.
“I can certainly look around, hopefully they won’t mind me poking around. Want me to do anything about any temporal weapons I happen to find?”

Savin hurried into the room, carrying a medical tricorder and a PADD. "I apologize for being late captain," he murmured as he took his seat, well aware of the fact that he probably already missed most of the briefing and would require a summary afterwards. "We were analyzing the compound that my father destroyed, and have started the replication process going on the one vial that we found in sickbay."
He took a deep breath as he glanced around the room, not really used to speaking in front of a group of people. Especially not since his speech was rather animated as he made use of sign language almost simultaneously, more out of habit than anything else. "We have been able to establish that it is dangerous to copper-based species. Investigation shows that my father had skin contact with the compound, as well as indigestion and inhalation. He has lost all sense of touch and from the inside his body is made to believe that it cannot exchange oxygen because the receptors in the alveoli are not detecting it's presence. Equally, the acids in his stomach are also unresponsive and will not digest food. I can continue onwards but basically my father's body has ceased to function as it should. There is no cure, the body will need to digest it itself, and well...flush it out the natural way somehow. He is on full respiration at the moment and we are helping his body by administering drugs to keep his digestive system going."
He connected his tricorder to the viewscreen to show a turning molecule. "This compound is not dangerous to the two species below, in fact it will enhance their lives if they receive it. Further tests show that while illegal, they will benefit from receiving it. I am pushing our findings to Starfleet Medical to get them approved as soon as possible."

Tiana thought for a moment. "We've got time to reconfigure the sensors to give us better coverage, anti-chronitons are pretty difficult to detect." It was a statement of intent, she glanced over at Commander Walters who no doubt would not relish his sensors being fiddled with.
It was going to be tricky to monitor the planet and the atmosphere for things that barely showed up because they weren't always there when you were looking for them.
Tag: Walters / rest of meeting.
The planet filled the viewscreen. Part of Tiana wanted to be down there exploring but it was a small part as she knew that the safety of the away teams depended on her and her team.

“Water please,” the young lieutenant (JG) said accepting the offer of his commanding officer, “thank you sir.” Trevor sat with his right forearm resting gently on the edge of the table. The cuff of his sleeve rode up slightly off his wrist. His hand pulled up in a partially closed manor. More out of nervousness than discomfort he used his other hand to pull the cuff back into place.
He still wasn’t that comfortable in meetings of this nature. It had only been a short time that he had received the promotion to the head of both Tactical and Security, something he had wanted but had not dared to believe would come so quickly. As members of the command entered he looked and nodded saying nothing and from time to time raising the glass of clear liquid to imbibe a small portion being careful not to over fill his mouth and spill a drop that might cause embarrassment.
Trevor nodded at the man in charge of the meeting. As he listened to the commands given him they seemed logical though disappointing. He had hoped for a position on the front line but understood how important it might be to keep him at his position aboard the ship. Under the circumstances he felt all precautions should be taken to ensure the success of their mission, even if that meant he didn’t have his preferences.
When Walters commented on what he planned to do O’Mannin shook his head, “with all due respect sir I ask that you be extremely cautious with your observations. Most hosts get a little upset with guests that seem too nosy.”

Ghes was about to reply to Walters to affirm what O'Mannin had said, when a young vulcan entered the room quietly. Ghes went on with the meeting once the CMO's son had settled down, pretending to be irked at the interruption but secretly amused.
"I advise you not to touch the weapons," he said to Walters. "I recommend scanning at the most. Anything you do find report to the ship immediately rather than myself because I'll likely be debating with the negotiators. If it turns out the insectoids are using temporal weapons of sufficient calibre to have caused the catastrophe on the other world, we might have to reevaluate."
<Tag Walters - O'Mannin>
Gheskori sat back, rotating in his seat to face the display behind him. Savin spoke as an image rotated on the screen. "This is the substance from the vial?" he asked quietly. Savin nodded and explained how they were obtaining clearance from Starfleet Medical to use the compound.
"How will it enhance their lives? I ask because if it is something they can't turn to a tactical advantage, we could bypass gaining HQ approval until after the mission."
"Press on with the replication of the compound. If it can be ready to give to the inhabitants below, in bulk, within six hours, then you'll have my congratulations. Tiana, keep me appraised of your anti-chroniton scans. And James... have their been any developments with that crippled freighter that was towed to the Beta Hydra Outpost?" Ghes inquired. "That will be all, unless there's anything further..." he looked each member of staff in the eye.
"Commander Walters, meet me in transporter room 2 in ten minutes, recommend unarmed. Lightly armed security should be enough. We want to show we're strong without appearing too aggressive."

Tiana raised her eyebrows slightly as he cut the comm link before she had acknowledged the statement. She gestured to where a member of the engineering department was working with CPO Tremayne to integrate the retuning of the sensors. She received two thumbs up in response and Martha Hernandez moved to monitor the output. Stellar Cartographer she was but she had the best eyes for spotting small slow consistent changes in a visual field. She was better at it than the computer (unless you set the change criteria so low that you were constantly checking false alarms) and the science department had proved that one quietish trip about a year back.
