A bolt of high-energy condensed plasma narrowly missed the Admiral's head. A second bolt was deftly deflected back towards its originator by a swift flick of Elron's wrist. It was a good job Avari hadn't evolved sweat glands because he was getting pretty hot under these robes - he would have been drenched! With the two techno-army droids effortlessly dispatched to wherever it is droids go when they cease to function, Elron turned his attentions back to Bema. And just in time. A few seconds later and the Admiral would have found a bright green blade uncomfortably placed between his eyes. With a parry, a twist and a forceful shove, Elron pushed Bema back and jumped up to the catwalk above them.
"There's one thing I don't really understand," called Bema from below.
"Oh, just one?" joked Elron, glad of a chance to catch his breath.
"Of course," laughed Bema. "Why are we testing another prototype when Disasterman's ship is clearly capable of faster-than-warp wormhole travel anyway?"
Elron swiped at a power cable which came hurtling down towards Bema and caused the light level to dim for a few moments. "Well for one thing, Disasterman's ship is top-top-secret while the research at the Brunel Propulsion Institute is well known to Starfleet. Even Starfleet Operations don't know much about Disasterman's ship." Bema, having dodged the cable with ease, sent a few cargo crates flying towards Elron, who saw them coming and dropped back down to ground level. "But for another, more practical reason, the technology on Disasterman's ship requires an extremely rare compound which is present throughout its design. A wormhole ship has to be constructed from scratch, so upgrading current ships with the technology would be impossible. There's also a limit to the size the ship can be; that's why Disasterman's ship has such a small capacity. It's not just because he likes travelling alone." While Bema laughed slightly in response to the Admiral's little dig at DM, Elron lunged ferociously at his CNO. "So unfortunately, the current state of wormhole technology is such that it's impractical for use on general starfleet vessels. The Quantum Slipstream drive, on the other hand, is specifically designed to be used on current large vessels - hence we're the guineapigs."
"Fair enough, I can see the logic in that," nodded Bema mid-swing, just managing to avoid having his head taken off by Elron's electric-blue blade.
"I'd like you to meet with the boys from Brunel as soon as possible. They'll show you how the navigation system works and how to control entry and exit trajectories from the slipstream." "And a lot else too, hopefully." "Indeed," agreed Elron, blocking a low swipe from the green blade.
Just then, two more droids ran into the room and began firing indiscriminately at the two Jedi.

Disasterman was walking thru the halls when he noticed one of the holodecks was in use. He didnt realize tht someone was on the ship other than the work crews, much less using the holodecks. Checking the program that was running he realized that the Admiral was the one using the room. Stepping into the control room he pulled up a screen of what was going on in there. He saw the Admiral jumping all over the place avoiding the droids that were programmed to come out randomly. He saw the Admiral dispach the droids and suddenly he saw another person in the area almost get the Admiral with a green lightsabre. Panning the screen around he noticed it was Bema Saberwym. Thinking that maybe the Admiral had added Bema to the program, Disasterman punched a couple buttons to check for sure. Hmmmm, the Commander thought to himself, it seems that this is actually the real Lt Commander. The Commander watched the battle and noticed the two were talking to each other while this battle was going on. He remembered the recent prank that the Admiral thought he was in control of recently during the return to the starbase and he also knew the Admiral was one to use one-liner jokes when he used programs like this one. The Commander turned up the volume to see if maybe he could have a laugh or two. He heard Bema ask about the faster-than-warp technology that he used in his ship. The Commander knew that even Elron with his being an Admiral and high security clearance still didnt have the clearance and knowlege of what his ship could do. It seemed that the Admiral tried his best to appear that he knew more than he did while describing the technology and change the subject to be more about the Tulip. The one thing that the Commander heard and sorta took personally was when the Admiral took a jab at him wanting to travel alone. I want to travel alone?? I'll show you that isnt true" , the Commander laughed to himself. The Commander pushed a couple buttons on the console which sent out two more droids to attack the two men that were fighting each other in the holodeck. As the Commander snuck back out of the control room he programmed the holodeck to send two more droids out every five minutes as long as the program was running. Have fun you two. As the Commander turned to head back to the bridge, he stopped, turned back up toward the entrance to the holodeck and on the opposite wall place a small card with the simple message, "I wuz here". The Commander walked down the hall laughing to himself again because he knew that the Admiral would know what had happened to the program when they finally exited the holodeck. when they came out.

Bema sensed movement behind him while he was talking to Elron. Bema did a back-flip just before he had a grip on what he was doing. Two droids appeared firing their blasters at the two Jedi. Bema deflected three shots at one of the new arrivals before cutting the droid down. After taking note of his CO's posistion he reached deep into himself connecting to the Force. He thrust his hand forward and watched Elron fall as if he had been run into. Bema was in motion almost the second he became disorientated.

As LT. Col. Burgess was returnning from emr. leave from the ship he was wondering what all has changed to the ship in the time he was gone.
<Burgess> Computer locate the command staff
<Computer> Admiral Elron and Bema is currently located in the holodeck and Disasterman in spying on them in the control room.
<Burgess taps Disasterman>
<Burgess> Burgess to Disasterman I've just beamed back aboard the ship and was wondering what was going on in the ship.

As CMDR Disasterman returned to the bridge for his shift in the C[atain's chair. Just as he reached the bridge his comm badge beeped.
Burgess to Disasterman I've just returned back to the ship and was wondering what was going on in the ship.
Welcome aboard Colonel, the ship is still being refit with the slipstream drive. The Admiral and Lt Commander Bema Saberwyn are in the holodeck running a program that I think will beat them soon. Other than that nothing much is going on. When would you like to start your shifts on the bridge? It really isnt necessary since we are docked at the starbase until the refit is done. I was planning on taking the ship out to make sure the impulse drive is still functioning since I was told that it may have been altered some with the refit, even tho it shouldnt have been touched. If everything else fails, I dont want to have to limp back like we did last time.
It seems that the ship is in capable hands. Im not sure when I want to return to shifts on the bridge since I have a few more days of leave. I'll let you know in the morning. Have a good shift.
Thanks you Colonel. My shift ends in about four hours. If you would like, we could meet up at the starbase's lounge and I could fill you in a little about the last time we tried the slipstream drive.

That would be a good ideal Cmdr. i'll meet you in the starbase louge in 5 hours let you refresh first.
As Col. Burgess was making his way to his Quarters on the BT he decided to take a walk around the ship to see if there was anything noticable that has changed on her.
<Computer Locate Senior Marine Officer J'Ka>
<Computer Senior Marine Officer J'Ka is located in Main Engineering>
Col. Burgess <+/taps\+> J'Ka
J'Ka here
Col. Burgess>> J'Ka this is Col Burgess i would like to get with you and talk about the upcoming mission.

CMDRfc Disasterman woke up from his boring shift on the bridge. He checked on the location of everyone and saw that the Admiral and CNO were both still in the holodeck. Wow they are sure glutton for punishment, the Commander thoguht to himself. Disasterman went to his quarters to change uniforms and headed out to Starbase Bellicose's officers lounge. After about twenty minutes, Lt Colonel Burgess arrived.
Sorry Commander, I was in a meeting with J'Ka and let time get away from me.
No problem, I just got here myself. Order watever you want, drinks are on me, this one time.
The Colonel ordered his drink and returned to the table where Disasterman had chosen in a secluded corner.
Disasterman told Burgess everything he could remember about the previous time that they had tested the slipstream. He told of the blown coils that put the Tulips in the far reaches of uncharted space. They happen to replace the colils but the replced ones had been sabotaged by an unkown source. They did manage to return to return to the Gamma Quadrant, but didnt have any mode of propulsion due to having to jettison the warp drive and the impulse was shot. We were able to get a message out and finally someone came along and towed us back to DS9 with their tractor beam. We got the impulse engines repaired and returned to space docks near Earth for the full repairs.
Sounds like you guys were lucky then. How come you didnt use your ship to return to Earth to get help?
Yes we were real lucky. We lost many crew members due to the explosions and some other problems. Only three members of the command staff are still around who were part of that "trip". As for my ship, it didnt exist at that time. In a way the experience with the slipstream helped me develop the concept of the wormhole drive. I know they are two different things, but I cant really get into it due to the high level security of it.
Only three? I would assume that the Admiral and you are two of them, but who is the third?
Commodore ONE was our helm officer at that time. Now he is the CO of the Hepta. The Admiral was going to talk to him to see if maybe he would like to come along for the ride, but I dont know if he has gotten in touch with him or not. Even if he cant come along, I think we will have a better run this time since the crew will be a little better trained and the drive has been tested a little more.
I hope it goes beter also, here's to a safe journey.
The two men raised their glasses, clinked them together, and finished off their drinks. They ordered another round and continued talking when.........

Having watched Bema destroy the two new droids, Elron was surprised to find himself thrust violently backwards. Losing his footing, he flew several feet across the floor before coming to a stop. He immediately noticed that Saberwyn was wasting no time and was practically upon him already. Regaining his composure, Elron rolled backwards, stood up and attempted to fend off the demonically-possesed Bema Saberwyn.
No sooner had they engaged blades though when another two droids entered the scene and inconsiderately interrupted them by firing searing hot bolts of plasma their way. Forced to break off temporarily, Elron and Bema easily destroyed the droids. Barely a moment later though, another two appeared. "God damn it!" shouted Elron as he sent one of the droids flying into the other one. Within minutes, the two Jedi found themselves overwhelmed with droids, working in unison and each determined to kill the two Jedi. Suddenly the game took on different rules as Bema and Elron were forced to work together against the increasing numbers.
They lasted a surprisingly long time, having decimated around 87 droids between them, but they couldn't possibly keep it up any longer. Elron suffered a fatal shot to the head, and not long afterwards Bema was shot several times in the back. Determining that both players were now dead, the holodeck program shut down. "What the hell happened there?! Was that meant to happen?" asked Bema. "No. I don't know what that was."
Once they reached the control room though, they noticed the sign and knew what had happened. "Disasterman!" sighed Elron, then he laughed. "He must have been watching us." Elron wondered whether it was his comment about Disasterman travelling alone, or his attempt at describing the top-secret wormhole drive that had sparked it off. Although Elron had a pretty good understanding of how wormhole technology would need to work in principal, given that it was one of his primary areas of research, he had to admit that he had no data on Disasterman's ship and all he could do was speculate about its workings. Or perhaps it had just been a random mood swing? In any case, it was a good joke and they'd enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
They each went to their own quarters to get changed, then met up again in the officers lounge on Bellicose. "I'll have a Romulan ale, a bowl of Lembas and whatever he's having.." asked Elron at the bar, pointing to Bema.
Elron noticed Disasterman and Gary sitting at the other side of the lounge. Assuming that they wouldn't mind being disturbed, he decided to join them. "Ah, Admiral... Bema... good to see you both. We were just talking about what happened the last time we tried a prototype from the Brunel Institute," greeted DM, smiling. "Let's hope it goes better this time," replied Elron, rolling his eyes. Have you spoken to Commodore ONE yet?" "I sent a priorty message to him on Starbase Conqueror earlier today. I haven't received a reply yet, but I'm sure I will soon." "Good, good. It'd be nice to see him again."
"By the way, we will also be having a Commander Doug Branson joining us for this mission. He'll be helping to review the trial by giving us a lend of his technical expertise. He's due for arrival sometime today or tomorrow, so I hope to be able to introduce him soon."

Commander Doug Branson walked quickly across Starbase Bellicose, with Master Chief Petty Officer Jack Grant at his side. Jack was somewhat larger than he was: 6'2" as compared to Doug's 6'0" The light almost seemed to reflect off the gray streaks in Jack's black here, while it just seemed to rest on Doug's brown hair. Jack was more broad than Doug's thin frame. The two strode confidently across the Starbase. As he walked, Jack looked at the data the Brunel Institute had given him regarding the Quantum Slipstream drive he would now be testing. He and Jack had spent the last month at Brunel learning everything there was to know about the Drive, and now would be able to see it work on a real ship, rather than all the simulations they ran almsot endlessly. He looked at Jack as they walked. "It's odd to be working on a Soveriegn isn't it? They rarely use such large ships for experimental drives. They usually don't want to have to move something so large and don't like risking something happnening to a ship as valuable as a Sovereign." Jack nodded. "True, but also remember that this new Slipstream Drive is so powerful that they were worried about overloading a smaller ship with its massive power output. They'll have to scale down the power matrix for smaller ships, or find some way to vent the power into some useful means." Doug agreed. As a Master Chief Petty Officer, Jack had as much experience, if not more, than any starship Chief Engineer. He had headed the Engineering Department on a large Starbase before Jack sought him out back when he was a Senior Chief Petty Officer. They approach their test subject, the USS Black Tulip. As they approached the umbilical, and young red-shirted ensign stopped them. "Hold it, sir. Your names please?" Jack handed him a PADD with information on who they were and their orders to report to the Black Tulip. The Ensign looked at it, checked on his own list, then noted something on it. "Very well, Commander, Master Chief, welcome aboard." "Thank you," Doug said as they continued past him. Once they stepped onto the ship, he called, "Computer, locate Admiral Elron." "Admiral Elron is in the Officers Lounge." Doug and Jack proceeded there. They found the Admiral with two of his Officers. They approached. "Admiral Elron?" Elron nodded. "I am Commander Doug Branson, Starfleet Corps of Engineers' Experimental Propulsions Divison. And this is my assistant, Master Chief Petty Officer Jack Grant. As you probably know, we've been assigned to assist with your test of the Quantum Slipstream Drive." (OOC: Hello everyone. My apologies for reporting in a day late. You're not going to find out who I really am, so dont bother trying )

As Bema asked Col. Burgess about his old trips on the Black Tulip Col. Burgess started thinking back to the Borg, Romulan and other races that they incounted on there missions of peaces. Bema i sure hope we don't met any Romulans on this mission. all the other memorys of the Tulip is fuzzy due to a Injury that he incurred during there last mission.

[OFF]: I think we were actually in the crew lounge of Bellicose rather than the Tulip, Doug, but we can easily overlook that . [ON]: With the arrival of Cmdr Doug Branson and Master Chief Petty Officer Jack Grant, a fresh round of drinks was ordered and the conversation took a friendly but polite course for a good hour. There was a broad mixture of reminiscing about old missions, asking about each other's family background and pondering about how faster-than-warp travel actually worked. Elron had just ordered a glass of Berellian whiskey when he received a communication from the Black Tulip. =/\= Installation team to Admiral Elron =/\="Go ahead," he replied, tapping his commbadge. =/\= The procedure's complete. You can take the Black Tulip out for a spin at your earliest convenience. My men are packing up and returning to Bellicose. =/\="Thank you, Chief. You've worked incredibly quickly. My compliments to you and your team. Elron out."The Admiral calmly finished his drink, determined not to show how eager he really was to get onto his bridge, and gently placed the glass on the table. The other five officers were waiting patiently to see what his next action would be. Elron said nothing for several minutes, seemingly letting his mind wander. They sat there in silence, each looking at their glass as the bustle of the Officers' Lounge continued around them. Slowly a smile spread across Elron's face, which broke into a grin as he spread his arms wide and said "Well, shall we go see what she can do?"The three Black Tulip officers grinned back; they knew full well that he wouldn't be able to wait any longer. Cmdr Branson nodded enthusiastically. Elron stood first while Gary drained his glass, and together they strode out across the main thoroughfare of the Starbase. "Colonel, could you contact Lt J'Ka please and ask him to meet us on the Black Tulip." Gary nodded in acknowledgement. As they boldly marched through Bellicose, it suddenly occurred to Elron that if this mission proved successful it could give the Federation a decisive advantage in galactic exploration. "Admiral, I have a few concerns about conducting this trial with so many of your officers on board. Do you mind if I ask why did they decided to run this trial on your ship?" asked Doug, frowning slightly. Elron turned to face him as they walked. "You're right, it doesn't seem to make sense to conduct such a risky trial on such a largely crewed ship, especially after what happened the last time. As I'm sure you're aware, the drive requires a significant amount of power which at present only the upgraded Sovereign warp-core can supply. If they'd been able to, I'm sure the scientists would have preferred to conduct the tests on an unmanned vessel but given the nature of the prototype that's not something they could risk, ironically. We've had independent computer-controlled craft go AWOL on us before, so the last thing you want is the most advanced piece of Federation engineering sitting in God-knows-whose territory waiting to be picked up. By the very nature of the drive it would be far beyond rescue by any Starfleet ship, and we really can't risk someone like the Romulans finding it.""I can understand the logic behind that, but couldn't they have used a moth-balled or new Sovereign? I mean, you're the Fleet Commander."Elron chuckled. "It gets better - Commodore ONE has agreed to join us as well. He'll hopefully be arriving in the next few days, in time for our tests of the long-range capabilities."Doug looked rather surprised, but Disasterman and Bema were delighted at the thought of seeing their old First Officer again. "The reason that we were chosen, of course, is that Disasterman and I have a particular expertise in this area, and our crew are the most experienced. The ship still has many of the modifications made last time too, though obviously they had to be significantly improved upon." By this time they'd reached the docking ring. At the sight of Admiral Elron, the guards on duty immediately let them onto the Tulip. "Cmdr Branson, you have the shake-down list I believe?" asked Elron once they were on board. "Aye sir," Doug replied, holding up the padd. "Someone will need to give Bema a full tutorial on how the navigation and helm control system works. I believe Disasterman wants to give the impulse engines a thorough testing before we go any great distance, though I'm sure that's on the list already. Lt Colonel Burgess and Lt J'Ka will be organising security on the ship and making sure we're prepared for any situation. Cmdr Branson and I will be going over the QSD and monitoring its performance in each test, with Branson and Grant running engineering.""Are those our orders, Admiral?" asked Disasterman, smiling. "Yes. I'll be in my ready room for a while organising the duty rosters with Colonel Burgess, so if anyone needs us you know where to find us."With that, each of the senior officers went straight to their respective departments. After receiving his orders from the Admiral, CMDRfc Disasterman headed straight for the bridge and to the seat he once occupied full time ..... the Captain's chair. He looked at the chair for a bit before sitting in it and observing to himself that he and the Admiral used the same setting in the chair design. After a few minutes, a full crew of Ensigns were at their positions on the bridge. Disasterman wasnt really concerned about the use of training Ensigns for this run since they wouldnt be going over Impulse or leaving the solar system, plus it would give them time on the bridge in working conditions. "Ensign Hayes, prepare to leave Bellicose. Be sure to check the blinkers, rearview mirror and windshield wipers." the CMDR said with a chuckle. The CMDR noticed the look of worry on the Helmsman's face when he couldnt find the buttons to check those items. Disasterman realized that maybe this wasnt the crew to joke with. Nevermind that. Close the airlocks. Release docking clamps. Back us away slowly. When we are a safe distance away, turn us about 180 degrees and set course for the far end of the solar system. Slowly, and I cant stress that I mean slowly, bring us up to Impulse speed. When we reach the end of the system, turn us around and head to the other end. We should be at full Impulse safely by then. I want to make two full passes across the system to make sure those engines are good.
Aye sir
Disasterman called to Engineering and told them to watch the readings and tell him if anything went out of range. He then called the Admiral and told him that the Impulse test was about to start. The Admiral wished him hood luck on his tests. Disasterman wasnt real worried because he knew they werent going to be to far from rescue if anything did go wrong.
Alright Ensign, I guess the only thing left to say is.... Engage.
Disasterman listened for the nearly silent thump of the airlocks closing and the clunks as the docking clamps realeased. He watched in the view screen as Spacestation Bellicose started moving away. He felt the same butterflies start building up that he used to everytime they left but he didnt know why this time. By the time they turned to head out, he was calm. He just added this one up to the fact that it was an Ensign pulling out of the starbase and not that he was actually nervous.
Disasterman sat in the Captain's chair watching the readingings that he knew many other were watching down in Engineering and he felt almost sure that the Admiral was also, even tho the Admiral was busy with Col Burgess working on the upcoming duty rosters. The multiple passes thru the solar system went off without a hitch , so Disasterman ordered the Tulip to return to the spacestation. Easy us in slowly. Remember, they will tractor us in when we get within range. As he said that, the tractor beam turned on and pulled them into their berth. Docking clamps on, prepare to open airlocks.
Disasterman waited for that welcomeing clunk that he knew was the clamps securing themselves both to the station and to the Tulip. CMDR Disasterman to Elron, tests on the Impule engines are sucessful and we have returned to the station. I will be releasing the Ensigns to continue their training in the holosuites and I will be staying on the bridge to finish out my duty shift.

Bema sat in the main briefing room adjacent to the bridge with his navigations crew. Master Chief Petty Officer Jack Grant was giving a full presentation on the QSD technology. "Slipstream puts incredible stresses on a starship's hull, so special structural plating has been designed to reinforce the hull and work in tandem with a specialised integrity field. The mathematics of the theory had to be severely refined and improved upon to properly calculate the phase variances in the slipstream.... At best it causes helm control and shields to go offline due to quantum effects; at worst it results in the destruction of the ship. A great deal of care must therefore be taken when exiting slipstream and deactivating the QSD, much more so than with warp-drive," Grant was saying as he brought computer displays. Bema took an open interest in the presentation. "The necessary components for using QSD are: hull material capable of withstanding the quantum-level stresses of the slipstream, a quantum matrix to produce the quantum field layer of slipstream space, a proper emitter of the field (deflector array), sensors designed for slipstream space to adjust the field for phase variant imbalances and prevent premature collapse, and some form of "braking" impulse drive to automatically hold your position and attitude when exiting slipstream space. Now any questions?" Grant asked as he finished the presentation. Lieutenant Ben Pierce raised his hand. "Is there any effect on the existing warp drive?" he asked. OOC: Thank you for the QSD tutorial Admiral. I hope you don't mind me using it in this post. Tag anyone.

As Col. Burgess and Adm. Elron was finshing up with there duty reports Col. Burgess was paged over the comms that he had a incoming message from Lt J'Ka on Starbase Bellicose.
Starbase Bellicose patch it throw to Admiral Elrons waiting room.
At that moment Lt J'Ka faces appeared on the screen it appeared that he was outside the airlock of the Tulip
Lt J'Ka>> Can you inform the Guards that am allowed on boarded the ship
Col. Burgess>> Lt J'Ka let me talk to the Ensign on duty.
Ensign Johnson>> Sir Lt J'Ka has no security pass for the Tulip.
Col. Burgess>> Ensign he is my Security Officer he has all the security clearences needed so let him on the ship Lt J'Ka i need you to report to engineering as soon as possible.
Lt. J'Ka>> aya sir I'll be there in 5 mins.

[OFF] Can I have a list of who is real and who is NPC and what each person's position (CNO, CMO, etc) is . Im getting a little confused on each persons role. I know Bema, Elron, Burgess, and Holi and their roles/positions. I guess what I am really asking is for a role call on who is here and who isnt so maybe we can get this thing going soon

[OFF]: Real players include myself, Gary, Bema, J’Ka, yourself, Doug Branson and hopefully Commodore ONE. Anyone else can be assumed to be NPC. Doug and ONE are participating as guests on this mission. Bema – no problem with using my specs. That’s why I wrote them. [ON]: Elron scrutinised the display intently. A permanent frown had attached itself to his forehead in the last twenty minutes as he strove mercilessly to understand what the hell the diagnostic feedback was telling him. "Delta rho?" he muttered to himself angrily. "What the heck is that supposed to refer to?!"Having finished scheduling the duty rosters with Lt Col Burgess, Elron had turned his attention to reviewing the system diagnostics of the propulsion drive. It was the first time he'd seen anything other than theoretical analyses, so it was taking him a while to get his head around it. For a horrible moment he thought that the Pauli exclusion principle had been violated, until he remembered that the Dekyon was in fact a boson and not a fermion. After another couple of minutes he concluded that everything was probably fine, and Branson would tell him if it wasn't. In any case, if he had to spend any more time reviewing data he'd probably throw his chair through the wall, so it was best to press on. Now that DM had successfully tested the impulse engines, they were ready to begin the preliminaries of the shakedown cruise. He walked out onto the bridge, immediately noticing that although everyone was aboard, it was a lot quieter than usual. Most of the Ensigns were down in the holodecks, and Starfleet had taken the decision to leave all non-essential personnel on Bellicose for a fuller LOA. They had no intention of running the usual surveys or investigations that were routinely conducted in the background on most missions, so this reduced the potential risk to life and meant no one was left without something to do. The master systems display monitor at the rear of the bridge glowed blue where the warp-core was, indicating that the quantum reactor was online. He walked straight past Bema, who was still familiarising himself with the controls, and stood in front of the Captain's chair where Disasterman sat. Col Burgess was with Lt J'Ka, reviewing the security measures for the Black Tulip. As the Liaison Officer moved to rise, Elron raised his hand and motioned him to sit. "Don't bother getting up, Commander. I'm going to sit at Science I to begin with. I can monitor things better from that console." He tapped his commbadge. "Bridge to Engineering, is everything ready at your end?"=/\= Affirmative, Admiral. All systems go! =/\= replied Doug. Cmdr Hancock moved to Science II as Elron took over the primary science station. He logged into the necessary subsystems, some of which required security clearance 9 in this case. "Bellicose have cleared us for launch," declared Bema from the conn. Disasterman looked at Elron. The Admiral smiled back. "You have the shakedown task-list, Commander. Take us out at full impulse and chart a course to Starbase Assailant. We’ll start with a route we can be picked up on if anything goes wrong."The call was announced throughout the ship that the Quantum Slipstream Drive would soon be engaged for the first time. As the officers jogged to their stations, an almost tangible sense of anticipation gripped the bridge. Elron crossed his fingers and hoped that the engines wouldn’t explode like last time… “Cmdr, on my mark,” urged Disasterman quietly to Bema. Then, with his finely honed sense of dramatism, he began to count slowly backwards down to zero. Bema held his breath as he waited for the order. “Mark!”As the navigational deflector warmed up and the quantum field approached maximum, a blue corridor opened up before the Black Tulip and she manoeuvred slowly into it. With a rush of energy she was thrust forward at tremendous speeds and they no longer had any view of the outside world. All they could see was the long blue vortex stretching in front of them, seemingly endlessly…

[OFF]: This is just to answer Bema's question in the Navigation Dept briefing, so consider it a back-post. Sorry for putting so many words in Doug's mouth [ON]: "Now, any questions?" Grant asked as he finished the presentation. Lieutenant Ben Pierce raised his hand. "Is there any effect on the existing warp drive?" he asked. Doug tapped the panel on the conference table and the large display changed again. A detailed schematic of the warp-core appeared. "Since the Quantum Reactor has been fully integrated into the warp-core, we'll be totally unable to use warp drive at all during this mission. If anything goes wrong, all we've got left is our impulse engines. The Reactor requires a great deal of energy, as do the integrity field and sensor matrices, which means that they'll be consuming the majority of the core's output. Matter/Antimatter reactions will still be used to produce energy in the traditional way, or we wouldn't have any way of powering the rest of the ship, but it won't be used directly in the propulsion system. Only the resulting power will be channeled into the Quantum Reactor to fuel it.""So warp travel is completely out of the question, then?" asked Ben, a little concerned. "Yep, but don't worry. I'm sure everything will go according to plan..." smiled Cmdr Branson.

CMDRfc Disasterman was still sitting in the Captain's chair on the bridge of the Black Tulip when Admiral Elron emerged from his ready room. The Commander started to rise from the chair when the Admiral said, "Don't bother getting up, Commander. I'm going to sit at Science I to begin with. I can monitor things better from that console." The Commander thought this was odd, but he knew that the Admiral was correct. The Commander once again got comfortable in the chair and pulled up the shakedown task-list that he was going to have to go thru over the next little bit of time. The only thing different than what was programmed was for him to release his ship and send it to a pre-programmed safety point just in case something unfortunate did happen to the Tulip. The Commander punched some buttons on his wrist PADD and set the auto navigation for the ship and also set the auto destruct for 5 hours. He knew that would be enough time for the Tulip's test run and plenty of time to send the stand-down code to his ship. Disasterman launched his ship just as Elron said, "You have the shakedown task-list, Commander. Take us out at full impulse and chart a course to Starbase Assailant. We’ll start with a route we can be picked up on if anything goes wrong."
"CMDR on my mark," Disasterman said to Bema. "Mark" The Tulip launched into the blue-veined vortex of slipstream. Disasterman knew the trip wouldnt last very long, but it seemed to last an eternity. Bema was concentrating on the controls while Elron was doing the same with the readings at Science I. This strong concentrating was broken with Disaterman saying, "Exiting slipstream in 5 ...... 4 .... 3 ...... 2 .... 1 ..... mark"

When the ship exited slipstream Bema was launched into his console. "Status report Commander," Cmdr1fc Disasterman inquired as he sat back in the Captain's Chair. Bema sat back in his station and took a quick measure of the Tulip's posistion and of the ship's systems. "We are in one piece and on course. The systems held up well and we are now sixty lightyears to Starbase Assailant," he said with a grin as he waited for the Commander to reply to the report. OOC: Tag Commander Disasterman.

As the Tulip exited slipstream, CMDRfc Disasterman forgot one main thing from the last time they had tested the slipstream drive, eiter hold on tight or get flung forward.[/b] Forgetting this simple thing became very apparant as he had to pick himself off the floor. He noticed that Bema had been thrown forward also, but didnt go as far since he was behind a console. "Disasterman to sickbay, Holi be prepared for some possible injuries. You may need to start Disasterman N-2-3 if you get overwhelmed. This will provide you with some nurses that I have been working on to help you out until we get a crew down there." "I understand, I willl program myself with the Disasterman-N-2-3 for future reference." Holi, the EMH, replied. Disasterman turned to Bema and said, "Remind me to have the crews install some restraints in the forward facing chairs. I dont think I want to fall out of it again, especially when we have a full crew onboard." Bema said with a bit of laughter "Aye sir, a set of restraints would be nice. I dont want to knock myself out on this console."Disasterman told Bema to keep the ship heading for Starbase Assailant unless he heard otherwise from Admiral Elron, who was busy going over the readings from the first test run of the new slipstream drive. <tag:Bema, Elron, Gary, J'Ka, Doug, ONE, or anyone who wants to say hi (lol) >

"Phase variances well within tolerances… sensors mapping at optimum frequency. The slipstream's stable!" shouted Elron excitedly. "Cmdr Saberwyn, how's helm?" asked Disasterman. "I've still got full control, but I feel like I'm flying blind. I'm used having navigational feedback on our location," he replied. "Don't worry, Bema. We won't be bumping into anything and it's all automated.""Structural integrity's holding… the epitaxy plating seems to be doing the trick. Shearing forces are within projected norms. Branson, how's the reactor?" asked Elron over the open commlink to Engineering. =/\= She's stable. The integrity field is a big drain on our energy, but I think I can re-route the verteron injector conduits to improve efficiency. The main thing is the Quantum Field is varying at precisely the right nutations according to the mapping parameters. =/\="I take it that's a good thing?" joked Bema quietly. "Anyone got any idea how fast we're going?" There was a pause as everyone looked at each other. Of course there was no way for them to check. For all they knew they could have been travelling at 6 miles per hour. Elron found himself staring into the hypnotic swirl of the blue slipstream vortex. They continued monitoring systems to make sure there weren't any unexpected side effects from the QSD, recording all diagnostics and results for later analysis. They were all slowly finding themselves hypnotised by the display when suddenly Bema's console beeped. Snapping to attention, he tapped his console rapidly. "Sirs, we're supposed to be nearing Assailant now… assuming the computers calculations are correct.""Careful now, Bema. This is the important bit. Bring the field strength down to 50%, just as you were shown." Elron crossed his finger again, silently praying that it'd be a smooth exit and the hull would be intact. Disasterman monitored the systems from the centre seat. "The drive's beginning to shut down. A mouth in the slipstream is opening ahead. Exiting slipstream in 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… mark," the Liaison Officer informed everyone. "Excellent!"As the USS Black Tulip flew elegantly out of the slipstream tunnel, the bridge crew were flung violently forward. "We are in one piece and on course. The systems held up well and we are now sixty light years closer to Starbase Assailant," reported the CNO from the conn. "Not bad, not bad at all," said Elron with quiet satisfaction, and rubbing a slightly bruised rib. "It would have been nice if we'd been a little closer, but it could have been a lot worse.""Hail the starbase and let them know we've arrived safely," ordered Disasterman. "Holi will probably want to give us a check over, to see if there were any adverse biological side-effects," sighed Elron, who loathed medicals. "USS Black Tulip to Starbase Assailant. I hope you've got our parking space ready!" Cmdr Hancock, the Acting CScO, hailed jovially. After a few minutes, the rather surprised Duty Commander of Starbase Assailant appeared on the screen. "I'm sorry Black Tulip, we weren’t expecting you for a couple of days. There must have been a mix up in communications, since we thought you were due to leave Bellicose this afternoon. We should have something available, though. Good to see you again.""Bema, you'd better take us to the starbase at impulse power," ordered Disasterman, as Elron pored over the results of the trial. "Remind me to have the crews install some restraints in the forward facing chairs. I don’t think I want to fall out of it again, especially when we have a full crew onboard."Bema said with a bit of laughter "Aye sir, a set of restraints would be nice. I don’t want to knock myself out on this console"=/\= Sorry bridge. We had a bit of trouble with the inertial dampers as we dropped out of slipstream. I’ll get to work on fixing the problem. =/\= called Branson from Engineering. "I'll give you hand, Doug," replied Elron heading for the turbolift. "Deck 16.""The good news," pointed out Hancock optimistically, "is that we just made a two day journey at maximum warp in a little under an hour. That's even better than we'd hoped!"[OFF]: I've discovered something a little inconvenient about most of the info available about QSD speeds. According to the faked message from Starfleet, the Dauntless covered about 60,000 light years in 3 months. That gives it a speed of about 240,000 times the speed of light. However, Voyager apparently used the same drive to travel 300 light years in about an hour according to most sources - a speed ten times greater! I'm thinking perhaps someone made a mistake in their sums. I can either assume that Voyager actually travelled for 10 hours (although they couldn't have survived that long) or that the Dauntless' faked message was wrong. I haven't decided exactly what speed to go with yet, but the larger one would mean Voyager could have gotten home in 10 days. That would severely change Star Trek as we know it, so I'm reluctant to make this drive too good. The drive featured in a later episode of Voyager was significantly faster, which is even worse for continuity! What do you think would be a good speed? 240,000 c is about 30 times Warp 9.99, so would that suffice? I don't know exactly how far Assailant is from Bellicose, but assuming it's about 2 or 3 sectors (~50 light years) then we went at about 438,000 c, or 55 times Warp 9.99. That sounds ok to me. We can easily change the numbers later though, since this is getting a little geeky even for me

As Col. Burgess and Lt. J’Ka where picking there selfs up from the floor after being thrown down when the ship dropped out of slipstream they noticed that the mods. that they made to the ships foward shields have changed by a .005 percent which isn't a big change but just .10% more will destablize the shields in thoses areas causing the ship to be riped apart.
<Col. Burgess to Main Engineering>
<Main Engineering> Go ahead Col.
<Col. Burgess> Engineering i need you all to increase power to section 3, 7, 9 of the foward shields i also need them to stay between 47.00% and 48.00% so that the ship isn't riped apart.
<Engineering> Aye Sir

Their first slipstream journey had apparently gone very well. They had made excellent time, but there were still a few minor problems that had to be worked out before they could risk trying out its long-range capabilities. That issue with inertial dampers needed to be sorted out before someone was seriously hurt and the slight variance Gary had observed in the forward deflector grids, if left unchecked, could escalate and cause the ship to break up on slipstream exit. Elron was down in Main Engineering to help with the integrity field modifications. Their current theory was that the interstitial harmonics between the epitaxy hull plating and the quantum Structural Integrity Field were accumulating and knocking the shield grid emitters out of phase. This could be fixed by carefully modifying the coherence of the field to cancel out any harmonic effects. This would also fix the side-effect on inertial dampers. While Doug and Jack Grant worked on putting this into practice, the Admiral received word that Commodore ONE was on-board Assailant and was requesting permission to come aboard. "Permission granted," replied a surprised Elron. He had expected the Commodore to be on Conqueror right now. At least this would save them a trip. "How long do you think this should take, Cmdr?" he asked Doug. "Not more than a couple of hours, I would hope," was the reply. "Good. I'll be with the Commodore. We can start preparing the ship for the next stage of her shakedown cruise."[OFF]: I'm putting the ship into a kind of time-line of its own, since Assailant is actually locked down and ONE should really be at the Academy preparing the Hepta for its next mission. That's not important though - maybe the slipstream has temporarily created an alternate reality for us
