It had been a couple of hours since T’Vin had left Kirk’s office. He sat rather impatiently while he waited for a long time friend and Captain of the Poseidon Class Starship the USS Cougar, James Harper. After what seemed like a half hour his door chimed and he stood up to greet his fellow Captain.
The door slid open and Kirk caught the sly smile of his long time friend, “Look at you, you old war dog.” Harper said.
“James,” Kirk extended his hand to shake Harpers, “Is it good to see you.”
“Same here.” Harper replied. His attention quickly shifted to Kirk’s office. He looked around as if he was comparing his own office to Kirk’s, “How on Earth did you get such a small office.”
Kirk smiled at Harper’s joke and replied, “Came with the ship.”
“So,” Harper said knowing there was a reason why Kirk had called him over, “You wanted to talk about something?”
“Yeah I do.” Kirk sat down at his desk and hoped that Harper would do the same.
“Does it have anything to do with the planet Starfleet has labeled as ‘Miranda’?” Harper asked.
“It does actually. How did you know that?”
“Where else in this sector could we have received such damage.” Harper said.
“What happened?”
Harper leaned back in his chair, he looked as if he didn’t want to recount the battle but he started with out hesitation, “We got orders to investigate the place when Starfleet hadn’t heard back from you after a few days.”
Kirk began to think; he didn’t feel as if he had been down on the planet more than probably a day at most.
“Once we got into orbit two Romulan ships decloaked and started pounding on us. I fought back as best as I could but we eventually had to withdraw due to massive system shutdowns. We were lucky to make it out alive.”
“How many?” Kirk asked.
“Fifteen dead, thirty injured, and one man is missing. We think he was sucked out into space when a torpedo ripped open a section of our hull.”
Kirk sat silent in his chair; he was lucky to have only a few wounded crewmates and one killed, Ensign Jones. Losing that many crewmembers in one fight seemed high, but after all the USS Cougar was only a Poseidon Class ship. Not as well built for combat as the NX Class ships were.
“What do you have in mind?” Harper asked as if he already knew what was on Kirk’s mind.
------------LATER------------
Kirk pushed the ship wide COM button in his office and in front of Captain Harper he said, “This is the Captain speaking. Would all senior officers report to the Bridge at once.” With the closing of the COM both Kirk and Harper stepped out of the small office and onto the bridge to wait for the senior officers to arrive.

“This is the Captain speaking. Would all senior officers report to the Bridge at once.” Leth turned around from the direction he was going and headed back towards the bridge. Since he had finsihed the repairs on the hull, he didnt really have that much else to do. Aside from being yelled at for letting Sodon out in space with him, Leth hadnt really done anything to get noticed just yet. Arriving shortly before most of the other senior staff, Leth found a spot near a wall and waited.

Jack's visit to Vulcan was exactly what he needed to repair some of the emotional damage that he had sustained over the last few months. It was an intense three days where all emotion was abolished, fasting was forced, and his worst fears faced alone. The three days were hard, but he knew that it would be for the best. His ties to Vulcan teachings had always been known, but this expierence definately changed him. That change was even more profound as he entered the Challenger once more. He wasn't in his Starfleet uniform, but in robes that gave him a distinct Vulcan look.
"Sir?" a crewman asked as he saw Jack walking by him.
"Yes, Crewman?" Jack asked stopping and turning towards the confused man.
"Nothing sir, you just look different," was his reply.
"Yes, I do, I'll change shortly," Jack replied as he heard Andy's message. Picking up the pace, Jack quickly reached his quarters where he changed and headed towards the bridge where Andy and Harper were waiting.
"James it's been a long time," Jack said happy to see his friend. James had been in their Academy class so long ago and he hadn't been able to keep up with them all.
"You could have called," James said," my communications officer talks to you about once a week. I"m not feeling the love."
"You're always busy," Jack replied with a smile," what are you doing here anyways?"

Loken walked into the briefingroom, hesitating in the doorway. "I know you're calling for senior staf," he started, "but as a Miranda resident I think I have a right to be at this meeting. If we're going back, I will need to be here to provide information. It is, after all, my home. And Saryn is my friend even though I betrayed him."
Sinking into a seat, Loken sighed deeply. "I spoke with his wife and son earlier, and we may be faced with an even graver threat." He paused. "He's in danger of dying, if we don't get him back to his wife soon. That's all she told me, and made me promise I didn't reveal more."
~meanwhile~ A few hours had passed since Kaulo had joined them. "You need my help?" Saryn repeated, after the stranger had regained some of his strength. "I am but alone. My crewmates have abandoned me here, there is naught I can do for you. I am only trying to survive, and aiding this clan while I do survive."
He flinched when Vespis touched his bare skin, her touch feeling white hot. Turning, he gazed up at her, reminding himself how beautiful she was. ~no~ he thought grimly ~she is Tigis' mate. She is taken, as am I. It is wrong.~
Vespis, however seemed to know what he was thinking and beckoned him. She entered a quiet and hushed conversation with him, smiling encouragingly. "It is wrong," Saryn insisted, then walked back to Kaulo, certain he was back in control of his feelings. "Tell me more about your captors, and where you got your weapons. Surely you had no time to get them when you escaped. I find your story doubtful and open to deceit."

Mike was running some diagnostics on the engines, he had finally got rid of the Vulcan presence in Engineering. It felt like they were never going to leave but now that Challenger was back to 100% there was no need for the vulcans to be there and Mike had kindly asked them to leave. All the engineers seemed to rejoice once the final vulcan had left, they were grateful for the help but it was nice to pick up a pda without knowing a vulcan was watching your every move. As Mike gathered up the pdas he had checked over and signed off on all the repairs he handed them to one of his Engineers to file away. Leaning back in his chair he listened to the subtle echo of the warp engine as it lay dormant.
Mike was only interrupted from his trance like state by a ship wide comm booming from the internal comm system. “This is the Captain speaking. Would all senior officers report to the Bridge at once.” Mike grabbed his pda on the status of the engines and stuffed it in his jumpsuit pocket then headed for the door and the lift up to the bridge. Reaching the lift he found himself jostling for position with some of the other senior staff just to get into the lift. As the doors swished open Mike stepped out onto the Bridge to find no sign of Andy. He did notice an Armoury Officer leaning on the far wall of the bridge, Mike cast him a glance and then approached.
“Mike Wallace, Chief Engineer.” Mike offered his hand to the new officer. “I take it you are the new Chief Armoury Officer then?” Mike continued.
<Leth>
The new officer introduced himself before firmly shaking Mike’s hand.

Kirk let the officers who knew each other get to know both Captain Harper and Ensign Leth. He knew they would all need to become good friends if they were going to be watching each other’s back on Miranda.
Once all the pleasantries were finished Kirk changed his tone and became serious, “If you direct your attention to the star chart.” Kirk said as he turned on the chart that sat on a long table in the back of the bridge, “This is the planet we are calling Miranda. Saryn is stranded on that planet and I intend to bring him home.”
Kirk paused and looked up at each of his senior officers. He quickly studied the looks on each of their faces and found not a single disapproving look.
“Captain Harper here is in command of the USS Cougar and he has volunteered to assist us in our rescue mission by providing cover for us while we are in orbit. Ensign Leth I want you to get a hold of the Cougar’s tactical officer and coordinate an attack pattern when we are in orbit.”
<Tag Leth>
After finishing up with some minor details Kirk dismissed the group, but as they started to break up Kirk called out, “Jack, Mike could you join me for a moment.”
The two officers looked at each other with a curious look but stayed never the less. Once Kirk felt as if he had the privacy that he wanted he opened up to his friends, “This mission is going against Admiral Gardner’s direct orders but I am not going to leave Saryn there to die. What I need is for our communication equipment to go dead unexpectedly once we leave the station. Jack I think you can find a way to make that happen. Mike, I need you to ready our MACO troops for an covert mission down to Miranda. I need this done quickly because we are scheduled to be underway once James’ ships is out from repairs.”

As Mike got to know the new Armoury Officer, Leth the rest of the senior staff began to filter onto the Bridge. In addition to a Starfleet Captain who had accompanied Captain Kirk onto the Bridge. Andy began the briefing by directing everyone’s attention to the star chart at the far side of the Bridge.
“If you direct your attention to the star chart. This is the planet we are calling Miranda. Saryn is stranded on that planet and I intend to bring him home.”
Mike clenched his fist behind his back in approval, this would give the Challenger and her crew to right a big wrong from their last mission and rescue his friend Saryn. Mike nodded to Andy to signal his approval for the mission, as the Captain paused to view the reaction of his crew before continuing with briefing…
Captain Harper, Mike had heard the name but didn’t recognise the face. He had been one of the first Starship Captains in the fleet and he had no doubt he was a man of the highest integrity. As Andy ended the briefing and dismissed the senior staff he called Mike and Jack back…
“Jack, Mike could you join me for a moment.”
Mike cast Jack a puzzled glance before walking with him and joining Andy as the bridge began to empty.
“This mission is going against Admiral Gardner’s direct orders but I am not going to leave Saryn there to die.
Mike and Jack knew what they both had to do, they had their orders from their friend and they had to rescue another.
“I’m with you all the way Andy.”
Mike replied as he darted off the Bridge to brief the MACO troops. Mike had not had many dealing with MACO officers but he had found that they tended to be self –important and often arrogant. He hoped they would respect his authority as their superior and their XO!
Mike arrived at the Armoury after communicating with Engineering that he would be unavailable and Lieutenant Scott would be Acting Chief Engineer during his absence. Mike knew the XO of the MACOs, a Lieutenant John Atkins – he was one of the first Officers that Mike had met on Challenger. Mike found Atkins leant against the Armoury wall briefing a young officer.
“John, I don’t know if Andy has informed you that I’ll be joining you and your MACO officers. I need you to gather them up for a briefing, we’re going back to Miranda.”
John cast Mike a bemused glance. “Understood Sir, I don’t know if you know how one of these works.” John said tossing Mike a phase rifle. “But you better get yourself acquainted.”

~Miranda~
"You need my help?" Saryn repeated, after the stranger had regained some of his strength. "I am but alone. My crewmates have abandoned me here, there is naught I can do for you. I am only trying to survive, and aiding th. is clan while I do survive."
"I am sorry to hear of your abandonment. I had only meant to ask the help of any who were willing to lend it." Kaulo took long breaths as he tried to gather his strength. He watched as the foreign man talked with a paleface from the tribe, both of whom seemed to enjoy each other company. "Tell me more about your captors, and where you got your weapons. Surely you had no time to get them when you escaped. I find your story doubtful and open to deceit."
"what weapons, i have no weapons" Kaulo said confused and angered at being accused of deceit by this "alien" "My captors, wore hooded clothing, so we could not see there faces, but at time we caught glimpses of their ears, much like your own. The dark skinned ones, often beat us for no reason, and followed the orders of the hooded ones."
~Challenger~
“Mike Wallace, Chief Engineer.” Mike offered his hand to the new officer. “I take it you are the new Chief Armoury Officer then?” Mike continued.
"yes sir, ensign Lethmir Dawson, Leth for short" Leth shook the mans hand firmly, and smiled, glad to finally meet someone new. As the meeting started, Leth listened intently, catching all the details he could before being assigned his mission.
"Aye sir, what kind of resistance are we expecting?" Leth asked, hoping to get a fair amount of information to work his attack patterns.

~ Miranda ~ ~ Mirandan Military Base ~
“I want them found, you understand?”
“Yes, Sir. We are searching for the alien intruders but the paleskins are a stubborn nomadic race spread through hundreds of different tribes it will take time!”
General Ankar replied, he had served in the military since he was a boy and here he found himself taking orders from their mystery allies. Allies who ordered him around but they had done much for mirandan society and despite his reservations Ankar served the government and they had faith in their mystery allies.
“I do not wish to hear your excuses, need I remind you that our alliance hangs in the balance!”
Ankar cast the hooded man a cold stare, “The intruders will be found. You have my word!”
As his supposed ally left, Ankar returned to his command room and addressed one of his closest aides. “Prepare the whole army for a siege on the paleskin villages and caves, I want their homes burned to the ground and I want those aliens found!”
“General, are you sure that is wise? The paleskins are obedient, if we slaughter them and burn their homes it could cause an uprising.”
Ankar scowled at his subordinate. “Do not question my orders again! Or it may be the last thing you do.”
“Understood.” Replied his aide as he ran to ready the battalions which made up the army.

~ Back on Challenger… ~
Mike was in the briefing room preparing to brief the MACO officers which Lieutenant Atkins had assembled before him. He looked around the room and he was surrounded by highly trained officers, trained specifically for the mission the Captain had in mind. Mike allowed Lieutenant Atkins to make the introductions;
“This is Lieutenant Wallace, some of you may recognise him as Challengers Chief Engineer…” Mike saw the smiles on some of the MACO’s faces as Atkins continued.
“He is also Acting XO of Challenger and is our superior. He will be giving us our mission briefing and leading us on our next mission. Lieutenant.” Atkins beckoned Mike to take the floor.
“Thank you Atkins, for those of you unaware of the Challenger’s last mission or for those of you who didn’t read the mission report, I’m going to give you a brief run down. Our last mission was to a planet Miranda to make first contact with the indigenous species there, unfortunately it got nasty. Our shuttlepod was shot down and we were out of contact with Challenger. We found evidence linking the Romulan Star Empire to the planet and found that out the hard way. Whilst escaping the planet in an alien shuttle we encountered 2 Romulan ships and fortunately Challenger took us aboard and fended off the ships. Unbeknown to us, our Vulcan Doctor – Saryn had returned to the surface to attempt a rescue. We regrettably couldn’t go back for him as we had endured significant damage during the firefight with the Romulans. Saryn is one of our own and we are going back for him.”
Mike paused to watch the reaction of the MACOs, there was universal agreement from the room and Mike continued….
“We are going back for Saryn, this is no ordinary search and rescue mission. In all likelihood the Romulans and the mirandans will be expecting us… we could be stepping into a war zone when we go down there. We need to be prepared for a quick extraction of Saryn, that is our primary objective. The mission will involve all 4 fire teams, Lieutenant Atkins will be drilling you all rigorously until we reach Miranda.”
Mike smiled at Atkins, he knew how fond the Lieutenant was of drills.
“Any questions?” Mike looked around the room, to his surprise there were no questions, “Well get to it then!”
Mike ordered as he watched the MACOs splinter into their fireteams and prepare the munitions and weapons they would need for the mission. This had been an odd change from staring at the dilithium injectors and the warp core down in engineering but he did miss it down there. Mike tapped the comm. button on the wall behind him and opened up a comm. to the Bridge.
“Wallace to Bridge, Inform the Captain that the MACOs have been briefed and are preparing for the mission.”

"You had a sword with you when you collapsed in our cave," Saryn countered, while helping Kaulo to his feet. He could sense Kaulo's anger and could understand it too. Yet he felt an unexplainable anger of his own, and it wasn't specifically directed at the refugee. "yes we know of the darkskins. They pursued us but we are safe for now. And the hooded ones are ruthless, so ruthless they kill their own when they show the merest compassion."
Leading Kaulo to a vacant alcove, Saryn lowered him on a cot. "When you feel better, join us at the fire. There should be food left for you. Then we can also talk more. The hooded ones do not belong here, and the darkskins are in their power. If we can make them see reason, then peace should be restored on this planet." With a nod, Saryn walked away, closing the curtain to the alcove on his way out.
Vespis approached him again, this time flanked by Tigis. "Have you reconsidered?" she asked, "your life is in danger Saryn. I can see you struggling, and your skin is as though on fire. We cannot afford to lose you, and what do we tell your crew when they come for you?"
Saryn sighed, then nodded. "Very well, I concede to your logic Vespis but I need the assurance that your mate is in approval."
Tigis cast him a toothy grin. "It was my suggestion," he chipped in.
Saryn nodded and followed Vespis to his own alcove. "Are you certain?" he asked her. She merely nodded and closed the curtain.
Numike glanced up at Tigis and tugged his sleeve to get his attention. "What's going on?" she asked, her eyes wide in surprise.
"Ah...adult business," the surgeon explained, still smiling, "you'll find out when you become of age in oh...twelve years. For now, you must leave them alone and refrain from running in there if you hear something." At that exact moment they heard a strangled cry and Tigis reached to hold Numike to him. "Part of the game," he explained. "Come child, we have a dinner to tend to. Our guest will be hungry and full of tales when he wakes up again."
~three weeks later~ Saryn's emotional turmoil seemed to have been dealt with and he was more restrained in his expressions. He had returned to his gardening after the clan had assisted him in evening out the crater. As expected, Vespis was pregnant and Tigis was now overly protective of her. Kaulo stayed with them, offering his skills to the clan and telling them everything he knew about the Hooded and the Darkskins.
As he rose, he shielded his eyes against the blazing sun. In the distance he could see dark clouds approaching but it wasn't that what drew his attention. As he fixed his eyes on the distant road, he saw vehicles approach. Dropping his tools he raced inside and went to fetch his sword and phase pistol. He hadn't used the pistol in weeks but he knew it was starting to get low on energy. His PDA had stopped functioning a long time ago. "They are coming," he called as he ran to the common room of the cave system. "Vespis, get the women and children organised and to safety." He briefly drew Numike to him. "That includes you Numike," he whispered as he hugged her fiercely. "There is a battle coming, and I need you to be safe. Do not return until I call for you, understood? If my people come, go to them at once and do what they tell you to do. Under no circumstance come to me unless it is safe to do so."
"Yes Saryn," Numike answered, then went to help Vespis, who to his surprise hadn't argued.
Saryn turned to Kaulo. "Tell uss what you know of their infantery," he demanded.

~ Miranda ~ ~ Mirandan Military Base – Command Post ~
It had been several days since General Ankar had mobilised the mirandan army. Ankar had opted to send out all of the battalions under his command. It only entailed 4 different infantry battalions, with approximately 2,000 mirandan infantry each. There had never been much of a need for a massive army, the paleskins had always been passive but with this growing threat of aliens infiltrating their planet as paleskins and attempting to destroy Miranda, Ankar was faced with the prospect of compulsory conscription of the civilian population.
One of Ankar’s Lieutenants, Brutos approached the General as he stood over the battle map in the centre of the room with models representing his battalions and depicting the scene of the battles.
“General, we have captured 12 paleskin villages. We are approaching the paleskin’s cave networks. The paleskins have put up little resistance, but there is no sign of the aliens thus far, what do you want done with the paleskins?” Asked Lt. Brutos
Ankar turned away from his Lieutenant and paused momentarily, his own orders were to have the paleskins wiped out. These were orders handed down by their allies and Ankar was about to defy them.
“Have them detained for now in their villages, there is no need for any unnecessary bloodshed. Perhaps we can get the paleskins to help us find the aliens hiding amongst them!” Ankar replied.
“Understood General, if the paleskins resist what then? Bloodshed may be inevitable?”
“Use necessary force, lethal force is only to be used as a last resort. Brutos, keep me informed of the army’s progress and you are only to report to me. Understood?”
"You need not worry about that old friend, I am loyal to you."
Brutos nodded and then left the command post to communicate his orders to the Commanders out in the field. Whilst Ankar went to his office, he had defied his nameless allies but he was a man of honour he refused to slaughter farmers and their families. Ankar only hoped that the aliens were found soon, before his hooded allies knew that he was not doing as they had commanded.

The mood that had plaqued Jack had suddenly been lifted when Andy informed them that they would be travelling back to Miranda to save the dear old Vulcan doctor. He could already anticipate the orders that he would be given and he knew what he would need to do. The possibility of being reprimanded by the Admiral didn't affect his decision to go along with this plan. Gardner himself had helped the crew do something similiar a few years ago.
As he had anticpitated, Andy gave the orders and Jack immediately began tinkering with his station. It wouldn't take much to do what Andy had asked and in know time it had been done.
"Jack after we save your doctor, I'll take you and Andy out for a beer," James said as he stopped at his station before exiting the bridge.
"Andy where did we leave off last time we watched a game?" Jack asked his attitude now completely different that a few minutes ago. He knew they would save Saryn and that was all he cared about at the moment.

"Aye sir, what kind of resistance are we expecting?" Leth asked, hoping to get a fair amount of information to work his attack patterns. Kirk turned his attention to the new officer, “During our first encounter we were jumped by three Romulan Birds of Prey while in orbit, during the ensuing battle we were able to destroy one ship while the other two caused severe damage to our main systems and forced our withdrawal.” Kirk said taking a quick breath, “Captain Harper encountered the same technique and faired far less than we did. I hope our sensor logs can give us some insight as to how we can penetrate their cloaking device.” Kirk finished. After finishing his extended briefing with Leth, Kirk turned his attention to his old friend and classmate Captain Harper, “We need to get underway as soon as possible.” “I know.” Harper replied with a sympathetic tone, “I’ll go back to my ship and rush the repairs.” “Thanks.” Kirk said. Harper slapped Kirk on the shoulder but before he left he made his way over to Jack, "Jack after we save your doctor, I'll take you and Andy out for a beer," James said as he stopped at his station before exiting the bridge Kirk couldn’t help but smile at James and his knack for knowing what to say at the right times. It’s what made him a Captain before any of his other classmates, and not only that a good captain. It had been rumored that he was slated to captain the new class of ships that were to be in service with in the next several years. The honor it would be to captain a flagship, Kirk thought. “Andy where did we leave off last time we watched a game?" “Last I remember it was the 2007 AL and NLCS. Rockies were leading the Diamondbacks three games to none, where as the Indians and the Red Sox were tied one game apiece.” Kirk said with a large smile, he loved baseball. “That’s what I thought.” Jack replied, “How about tonight in the mess hall’s big screen?” “Sounds like a good idea, say 7:05 PM?” “Good call, oh and I do have something else for you.” Jack said in a subdued tone. “Oh?” “It was sent hidden with in a standard report from Starfleet. I nearly overlooked because it looked like normal subspace noise but something caught my eye.” “Can you patch it through?” Kirk asked as he pointed back to his office with his thumb. “Sure can.” “Thanks.” Kirk said. He wanted to invite Jack to take a look at the message but since his promotion he has been warned about his friendship and openness with his other officers. It had been made abundantly clear that there was now certain things that were for his eyes only, this was one of them. Sitting in front of his monitor the password-protected message came up on his screen: Know of plan. Take out Romulan industrial plant. Give ‘em hell.
G “How in the world?” Kirk said out loud, than it dawned on him and he had hoped that in the future he wouldn’t be so transparent. He had put too much emphasis on leaving Saryn behind and how he wanted to go back and rescue him. Admiral Gardner must have realized that a hard headed Captain is going to do what he feels is right no matter the consequences. Kirk was smart enough to know that Gardner had covered his own behind by sending his denial request before sending this encoded message. “There’s no safety net.” Kirk said to himself. “Sir, Lieutenant Wallace reports the MACOs have been briefed and are preparing for their mission.” “Have Lieutenant Wallace report back down to Engineering.” “Aye sir.” Getting up out of his office chair Kirk rushed to the bridge, the time had come. All hands looked at Kirk as he seemingly stormed onto the bridge from his office. “Helm, get clearance to depart.” Kirk said, “When you have it take us out.” “Aye sir.” “Jack, send a message to Captain Harper and inform him to meet us at the rendezvous location.” <Tag ALL>

Mike kicked back his chair and put his feet on the desk in the briefing room, he had briefed the marines and was just running through the inventories to ensure everything was in order for their upcoming mission mission. Atkins had finished prepping the MACO fireteams individually and had returned to the briefing room as Mike received the comm. from the bridge.
“Captain wants you back in Engineering, we are about to depart the Vulcan station.”
Mike turned to Atkins who had overheard the comm. message.
“Keep prepping the MACOs John, I’ll see you on the surface. Perhaps you can show me how one of these works.” Mike said tossing the plasma rifle, Atkins had passed him earlier.
“I’ll be sure to show you how us MACOs do it.” Atkins replied before Mike left for Engineering.
Mike made his way back to Engineering, as he entered all seemed calm. Challenger had just departed the vulcan station and was travelling at warp heading back towards Miranda. Mike sat at his station with several pdas having piled up detailing diagnostic after diagnostic which he had to review and ensure everything was in order.
“You could have done some of these for me when I was away Lucy.” Mike said as his Assistant Chief Engineer passed.
“I wouldn’t want to deprive you of your paperwork Chief.” Lucy replied flippantly.
“Are you kidding this is the best part of the job, what’s our eta until rendezvous with the Cougar?”
“Approximately 2 hours before we rendevous, then 2 more days at warp 4 to reach Miranda.”
Mike nodded in acknowledgement, he wished they could get back to Miranda faster but the journey time would give them time to prepare for the mission. It would also give the MACOs time to prepare for the surface, if they ever got there. This mission wouldn’t be easy…
Mike's train of thought was interrupted by Loken walking past Main Engineering. Mike shot up from his seat and ran for the door, truth be told he hadn't spoken to Loken much since Miranda and had completely forgotten that Loken was only a passenger and hadn't seen his home in some time.
"Loken... hold up a minute." Mike called as Loken turned round.
"I guess you have heard, we are heading back to Miranda? How are you holding up?"

The truth was plain and simple, Kirk missed being down in the engine room. There was a certain smell the warp engines gave off that only a engineer seemed to be able and smell. When he used to talk about it to other section officers they just laughed and went about their business. Now as the ships Captain if he said the engines had a certain smell to them by God they had a smell to them.
Kirk had left Jack in charge as he took a stroll around the ship. Everybody acknowledged his presence as he past them in the corridors, most saying polite and courteous greetings while some were more distant and formal. Those men and women were obviously new to the ship.
His heart raced as he stepped into the Main Engine Room. He couldn’t help but smile as he felt as if he was back home from a long trip. He instantly forgot about the four pips on his collar and went back and began speaking to his fellow engineers as if they were long time friends.
“What brings you down there parts Andrew?” Kirk recognized the familiar Scottish voice of one of his close friends and mentors.
“John,” Kirk said with a smile on his face as he turned around. John MacTherder was an old enlisted engineer who frequently threw out the handbook on how to fix things. He had been quoted saying, ‘If those bloody designers would have to fix these engines as well…things would be different.’ Nearly every engineer felt the same way, “How you doing?”
“Fine Cap’n, fine.” John said shaking Kirk’s hand, “But ye haven’t answered me question just yet have ya? Whatcha doin’ in my engine room?”
“Don’t worry this isn’t a surprise inspection or anything.” Kirk replied.
“Just miss us do ya?”
“Something like that.” Kirk said with a laugh. He was right, he did miss them thought. The bridge was quiet in comparison to the louder and routy engineers.
“Something tells me that you wish the bridge could be moved down to there parts.”
“You think it could be done?” Kirk asked.
“Aye. Just don’t think you can sit on your butt while we move your office down stairs if you catch my drift.”
Just behind John a few lights began to blink and soon a small alert alarmed went off letting the engineer know his break time was over, “If you’ll excuse me Cap’n.”
John left Kirk to attend to the needs of the Challenger and her mighty engines and this left the ships Captain standing in the middle of the engine room to soak up the nostalgic feelings before having to report back to the bridge.
Looking around Kirk spotted Wallace talking to Loken. He wasn’t sure if it was the right time to approach so he decided to walk around and have a mini inspection.
He knew that Wallace handled himself brilliantly in the field but he had yet to really prove himself as the ships new Chief Engineer. A position that Kirk didn’t take lightly.
After some time Kirk saw his chance to approach as Loken peeled off, “Mike,” He said catching Wallace off guard, “I want to talk to you about something.”

Mike had propped himself up on the corridor wall as he had been discussing things with Loken. Truth be told, Mike still blamed Loken for what had happened to Saryn and it was only now that Challenger was returning to save his friend, he had learnt to forgive Loken. His conversation with Loken had taken his attention off of Engineering not for anymore than 5 minutes but in that time Mike had missed Andy enter the Main Engine Room.
"Well Loken, it has been nice catching up. I assume you'll be wanting to return to the surface to help Saryn, I'll have you on the team with me when we return." Mike stated, before parting ways with Loken.
As Mike finished up his conversation, he turned to head back to Engineering when the Captain’s voice caught him by surprise.
“Mike,” Andy said catching Mike off guard, “I want to talk to you about something.”
Before Mike could respond, his mind started racing – not another inspection he thought to himself. Smiling warmly at Andy, he began to speak.
“Its good to see you down here Sir, I see you still know where Engineering is… You know if you ever fancy a shift down in the Engine Room you’re always welcome.”
Mike answered, he knew that Andy having been an Engineer before still craved working in Engineering, as an Engineer it was in your blood. There was just something about Engineering which was unique and unrivalled aboard a starship and Mike could see that Andy thought the same way.
“What is it you need to talk to me about? It sounds serious.”

“It’s good to see you down here Sir, I see you still know where Engineering is… You know if you ever fancy a shift down in the Engine Room you’re always welcome.”
Kirk smiled but if his responsibilities weren’t sitting on the bridge he would’ve taken Mike up on his little offer.
“What is it you need to talk to me about? It sounds serious.”
“It’s nothing too serious,” Kirk said. He pulled out a PDA from his leg pocket and presented it to Wallace, “This…is something myself and another officer whom isn’t on board anymore started to work on. We had heard rumors flying around that some ships had been using plasma to form a ‘shield’ around their ship. The problem is that we couldn’t get it to work. We had several power problems and our time on the frontlines kept us from really giving it a real shot.”
Kirk handed Wallace the PDA, “I’ve been obsessed with this idea for the past several years but I don’t have the time to really give it the attention it needs, and on top of that I thought a fresh approach might do it some good.”
<Tag Wallace>
“We have a day to sit idle while we finalize the attack plans, and then the four days to Miranda. Now, I’m not expecting a fully functioning shields system in five days, that’s just not possible. If there was some way to gain an edge to modify our hull plating that might just be able to keep us in the fight those few more seconds.” Kirk voice trailed off. He didn’t feel he needed to elaborate on the possibility that the Challenger or the Cougar might not make it back.
“Bridge to Captain Kirk.”
Kirk moved slightly to push the COM button on the station close to Wallace, “Go ahead Jack.”
“I found another message; I suggest you come take a look at it.”
“I’ll be right there.” Kirk stood up straight and hoped he hadn’t put too much pressure on Wallace. He had read Wallace’s biography and he had heard very good things about this young engineer and even with their limited time knowing each other he saw everything his instructors saw in him. He was bright, and above all he was a good engineer, probably a better engineer than Kirk was when he first got started. A natural leader who Kirk knew would have his own command one day, but right now Kirk wanted him to deliver the near impossible, “Keep me posted.” Kirk said before leaving Engineering.

“Jack, send a message to Captain Harper and inform him to meet us at the rendezvous location.”
"Already done, Captain," Jack replied as he finished his conversation with the Cougar's communications officer," according to our projections the Cougar will beat us to the rendezvous point thirteen hours ahead of us."
"Understood, you have the bridge," Andy said as he motioned for the lift in the back. Jack already knew that Andy was headed towards the one place he truly felt at home, main engineering. The pressures of command was something that Andrew Kirk hadn't anticipated so early in his career, but if anyone was ready it was him.
"Commander, what are your orders?" the helm officer asked.
"Once the Cougar has left the system, head towards these coordinates," Jack said as he pointed to a nearby sector. Once they reached that location the ship would experience a momentary blackout which would result in all loss of communications.
"Understood," the helms officer replied knowing that something was up. All seasoned crew members on board would undoubtedly know about the plan. Jack had also informed all communication officers within Challenger's fleet. Once they read his message they would inform their captain. The illegal mission that they were going to partake in would be known to all captains of the fleet shortly.
"How long have you served on the Challenger sir?" the helm officer asked wanting to continue a conversation.
"It's been years now, I came here right out of the Academy with the Captain," Jack said," I almost left a long time ago, but the Captain and Captain Voran helped me through it."
"Ever thought about transferring to another ship?" the helm's man asked," I know Atlantis is looking for an XO."
"I know, Captain Tsang has already called, but I told him no," Jack said smiling," I don't think I'm ever going to leave. Not as long as the Challenger can fly."
"Sir, we got two messages coming through via the comm network," the helm officer reported," one is from the Columbia and another marked confidential."
"Bridge to Captain Kirk"
“I found another message; I suggest you come take a look at it,” Jack said as he accessed the first message.
~If you need any help, we're two days away~
The message was clear and short and it immediately brought a smile to his face. Having the Cougar was great, but knowing that they would have some sort of backup was amazing.
"What is it Jack?" Andy asked.
"I've got some good news," Jack said as he told him about Atlantis," we also got another message. Level 9 clearance."

“This…is something myself and another officer whom isn’t on board anymore started to work on. We had heard rumors flying around that some ships had been using plasma to form a ‘shield’ around their ship. The problem is that we couldn’t get it to work. We had several power problems and our time on the frontlines kept us from really giving it a real shot.”
Andy said as he handed Mike the pda with his research on plasma shielding…
“I’ve been obsessed with this idea for the past several years but I don’t have the time to really give it the attention it needs, and on top of that I thought a fresh approach might do it some good.”
Mike gave a quizzical look at the data, before his assignment to Challenger he had worked on something similar which ultimately resulted in failure whilst working in R&D.
“Aye sir,” Mike answered, as Andy continued…
“We have a day to sit idle while we finalize the attack plans, and then the four days to Miranda. Now, I’m not expecting a fully functioning shields system in five days, that’s just not possible. If there was some way to gain an edge to modify our hull plating that might just be able to keep us in the fight those few more seconds.”
“Understood Sir, I’ll certainly give it my best shot.”
As Mike was interrupted by a COM from the bridge for the Captain. According to Jack they had found another hidden message… Mike wondered what it could be, but he had more important things to do. The idea of plasma shielding, it was an attractive proposition – Mike just hoped it was achievable.
“Keep me posted.”Andy said before leaving engineering to return to the Bridge.
Mike sat at his desk and reviewed the pda in front of him, the data was interesting to say the least but it was a long way from a workable plasma shield. From the research in front of him, Mike wasn’t even sure that Challenger could generate enough plasma to enforce the hull plating. Mike stared down at the duty roster and began to contact the Engineers who were off duty to meet him in engineering to find some sort of workable solution. Mike’s immediate thought was to use the warp plasma and channel it into a generator attached to the hull plating – it was a brutal approach and was more of a quick fix than a solution but Mike thought it may just work…

Loken looked up at the first officer, a sad look in his eyes. "yes, I'm glad to return home commander," he replied, "and I'll do everything I can to help you get the doctor back. He's my friend too, if you remember and I regret that he was left behind." He shook his head in misery. "I spoke briefly to his mate and his child. Though they're not expressing much of how they feel, I got the impression Miss T'Vin does miss her mate, and needed him home urgently for something. She almost looked agitated. The boy didn't seem to understand what was going on, but he's old enough to understand something is wrong."
Sadness was replaced with urgency. "Tell me, how can I help set this right. I'll do anything to help when we get to my home. Just give me something to do, I can't stand sitting around idling, when you all are busy staging a rescue!"
~ Miranda ~
When the military came, the clan didn't fight them. They were met without hostility and Saryn watched from a distance how Tigis and Somon were handling the 'interrogations'. Nobody was harassed and Somon allowed a few soldiers into the caves to ask about the aliens that were supposedly invading Miranda.
Saryn himself didn't meet any soldiers just yet as everyone seemed to steer them away from him as much as possible. "He's our doctor but he can't stand crowds," he heard one say, while another claimed he wasn't a public person at all, that he was pretty much a loner. The truth was quite contrary, as Saryn enjoyed the company of the men and women in the clan, including the children with Numike in particular.
When the soldiers left, he emerged from the shadows. "We cannot hold them off forever," he warned, "they will be back and next time they will be less patient. They are soldiers, used to paleskin obedience. And you cannot protect me forever either. Perhaps, the next time I should try and reason with their commander. Assure them that all I want is to go home and that I have taken shelter here to survive." He looked around the crowd, at faces he did and didn't recognise, faces that nodded in agreement or shook their heads in denial. He knew exactly who he could trust, but he didn't know who he couldn't trust at all. What he did know, was that he didn't trust the newcomer, Kaulo.

Kirk looked down at the text and he couldn’t help but smile. There seemed to be a unwritten brotherhood between Captains and it even extended to new rookie Captains such as him. Level 9 clearance, Kirk thought. He knew this had something important on it and he needed to make sure he viewed it in private. “Could you patch that through to my office?” Kirk asked. “Of course.” Jack replied. Again, Kirk quickly disappeared into his office to take a look at the new message. This time to his surprise the message was a little cryptic. Spy on home world, locate the one they call Istamia. Kirk sat back in his chair and thought about the message for a second before he finally came to a solution, “Kirk to Wallace.” Kirk said into the COM system. “Go ahead Captain.” Wallace replied. “Could you come up and bring the Mirandans with you?” “I’ll be right there.” <Tag Wallace and Mirandans>

Three months it had been since Saryn had been left behind on Miranda, and in those three months, the Vulcan doctor had made quite a living for himself. He still tended to the sick, together with Tigis and he also tended to his garden, growing vegetables that would provide the nutrition he needed. Sometimes, Numike would help him in his garden; at other times Somon would assist him.
Since the last attack on the clan, they hadn't been bothered by the dark skinned military again, for which Saryn was grateful. He didn't have time to make strategic plans, nor did he wish to do so. He did, however, continue his sword practice with Somon and by now he was just as skilled as the swordmaster himself. He carried the sword Somon had given him with pride, and he felt he would need it especially since his phase pistol had been drained of energy. He had used it to clear his field of a stubborn tree stump that just wouldn't be moved, but had to be in order to plant the vegetable seeds.
Wiping his long hair from his face, Saryn inspected his fields. His hair had grown to shoulder length and he hadn't seen fit to have it cut back to its usual cropped length. Reaching, he tucked the stray strands back behind his pointed ears, then picked up his shovel again and walked back to the caves. "Where is Kaulo?" he queried, when he looked around for the stranger.
"I don't know," Somon answered, "last I saw him he was going for a walk together with Semmik. But that was even before morning meal." Somon walked off to return to his work, leaving Saryn to wonder where the stranger had gone off to. Shrugging, Saryn put the shovel away and walked over to his alcove to get freshened up.
The afternoon was sunny but Saryn felt a season change was coming up. The days were colder even though they were still fairly hot. He had pulled off his tunic and reached for a cloth to dry his skin when his sharp hearing picked up a sound he couldn't identify. Reaching for his sword, he turned and stood face to face with a dark skin. The man looked young, but also quite experienced. The Vulcan froze when he felt something cold against his bare skin and he released the handle of his sword, raising both hands to show he wasn't going to resist whatever the darkskin was planning to do.

His fast track to a command had come across a serious threat. His current commanding officer had assigned him patrol watch. This in itself was no problem, the problem was the location. He had been assigned to patrol an area that had already been searched by the military. His assignment to the small clan village meant that there would be no serious involvement for months. With this bitterness in mind Zilan began his daily patrol of the area.
Doing the same patrol for three weeks had become more than mundane and boring to the young Mirandan but today it would be different. He would patrol outside his search area and hopefully he would find someone breaking the law. At first it was just like any patrol, but it didn't take long for him to notice someone in a garden. Not recognizing them he immeidately took out his weapon. At the moment it was no longer than a foot, but if the situation merited he would activate it; making it a very effective staff weapon.
Making sure that the stranger would not hear him immediately, Zilan carefully walked up behind them. When they eventually heard him it was already to late. His weapon was ready to be used.
"Pick up your sword and throw it!" Zilan ordered," if you try to attack me, you'll be dead within seconds."
(Saryn)
"Where are you from?" Zilan asked," I have never seen any of your kind in this area. I didn't know Mirandan's could look like you. Though I have heard about aliens invading us."

"Pick up your sword and throw it!" Zilan ordered," if you try to attack me, you'll be dead within seconds."
The Vulcan regarded the Mirandan across him with mute interest, wondering if he was at all using his eyes. His sword was sitting in it's scabbard, which in turn was attached to a belt around Saryn's waist. However, Saryn also noted trying to attack this Mirandan was moot, considering he already had some form of weapon trained on him, and seemed to be looking for an excuse to use it.
Nodding silently, Saryn lowered one hand and pulled the sword from its scabbard, then handed it over to Zilan. "Please treat it with reverence," he requested, "it was gifted to me and has great personal value." His request went ignored, even though Saryn thought that he saw a slight nod from his captor. He shivered against the rapid cooling temperature in his alcove, but didn't move to retrieve a clean tunic.
"Where are you from?" Zilan asked," I have never seen any of your kind in this area. I didn't know Mirandan's could look like you. Though I have heard about aliens invading us."
"I am Vulcan," Saryn answered calmly, while weighing his options on defeating his captor, "I was left behind by my crewmates when Romulans attacked our ship. I am, obviously, not Mirandan, nor do I pretend to be one. And I am not part of an invasion, however your planet has been invaded, by black-clad masked people."
The Vulcan shifted his weight, still observing his opponent, who was now holding his sword. He saw movement from the corner of his eye, and quietly made a few handsignals, that weren't lost on Zilan. Saryn sighed when Numike disobeyed him and walked straight up to him. "Numike, go find Somon and stay with him. I will be all right."
The girl shook her head and glared at the darkskin. "He's holding a weapon on you, you won't be all right. They're ruthless, they murder their captives."
"I am quite sure he will not kill me. His superiors have been hunting me, and I am quite certain they want me alive, preferably unharmed." When Zilan prodded him with his weapon, he fell silent, raising his hands again to shoulder level. "Obey me Numike."
Numike glared at Zilan. "If you hurt him..." she threatened, then ran off.
Saryn raised an eyebrow. "How do you propose we proceed?" he queried, "you do realise I could easily overpower you. I have more endurance than you have and I am quite possibly older than you are."

-On board the USS COUGAR-
“Helm, what is our present position?” Harper asked.
“Right where we should be sir, although he we early.”
“What is the Challengers ETA?” Harper asked, this time sounding more concerned.
“They are scheduled to arrive at our position in less than twenty-four hours sir.”
“Good,” Harper said shifting in his chair, “Let our contact know of the Challengers arrival time.”
“Aye sir.”
Harper sat in his chair and looked out into the black void of space that was being projected from his main view screen. Just behind him in the shadows a slow red blinking started. It continued and without warning began to move forward. In just a few steps a figure appeared on the bridge of the Cougar, but the face of this figure remained hidden in the shadows.
“You are doing well Captain.”
Harper didn’t bother to acknowledge the voice from the back of the bridge. His expression continued to remain blank, but his eyes told a different story. His eyes told a story of hatred but not for the Challenger or his mission but for the situation the mysterious man who remained in the shadows had put him into.
-On board the USS CHALLENGER-
“What do you make of it?” Kirk asked.
Wallace kept a stunned look on his face while his Mirandian friend looked well interested in the messages. He looked as if he wanted to speak but kept quiet being as he was the visitor onboard an alien spacecraft. It didn’t take long for Kirk to notice the antsy Mirandian male.
“What is it?” Kirk asked.
“I think I know that name.”
“You do?” Kirk replied with another question. It was something he tried his best not to do but it happened when he was trying to pry more information out of somebody who was less than willing to give it up.
“Yes, but it has been some time now.”
“Could you elaborate please?” Kirk asked, his patience starting to grow thin.
“What does that word mean? Elaborate.”
This was the last thing Kirk wanted to run into, a translation problem. So far Jack’s universal translators were working with out a problem, but now the ‘P word’ was starting to show its ugly head.
“It means to explain it more, with more detail.” Wallace said.
“I see,” Said the Mirandian male, “If this is the same Istamia that I know he is then become a very important man on my home world.”
“How so?”
“Istamia is what you would call a…” He began to search for the right word, “President. He would be the President of my country.”
“Why would the President of your country be a spy for Starfleet?” Kirk asked to himself.
“I do not know.”
Kirk ignored the Mirandian male’s answer, it seemed that he didn’t know what a rhetorical question was. This new information made Kirk pace in his office, both Wallace and the Mirandian fell silent and watched as Kirk pinched his bottom lip together with his fingers. It was something he did when he was deep in thought, something his fellow engineers used to razz him about to no end, something he was sure Wallace had already heard about.
“What should we do?” Wallace asked.
“I’m not sure yet.” Kirk replied honestly.
