"Thank you doctor," James answered jovially as he passed the chief medical officer out of his office. "Now, can I get back to work, please?" That John walked out of his office himself to join Holi and Kanz hopefully meant that he was and James walked away.
"The nerve," he murmured as he approached Q2's bed. "Hello counselor," he called, smiling gently, "how are you holding up?"
He watched as the El-Aurian shifted on his bed. "Do you need assistance in sitting up?" He stepped a little closer, concern spreading across his features. "I'll be glad to help. I see you're recovering nicely, you really were in a bad shape when we returned. The admiral, for some reason, is still unconscious, but there's hope he'll wake up soon."
His smile widened. "And I'm sure you'll want to counsel him on taking on this crazy mission as he did." James sat down on the chair near the bed. "And you were crazy, thinking that you could impersonate Admiral Drew. What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking pretty much what happened. Just with slightly less torture. Never in a million years were they gonna buy that I was Drew, but that wasn't the point. We needed someone else on that ship, and that's what I gave us. That, and it's always fun to do the opposite of what everyone else wants, because you get to go to those fun hearings to work out who was right." He finished sarcastically. "And yeh, counselling, that's top of my wants and desires! The first thing I want to do is transfer to some other damn department, and leave that mind stuff to you." He grinned sheepishly.
"You're just.."
"No seriously, as soon as I'm out of this bed I'm requesting a transfer to another position." He grin faded, partially as he cut in seriously, and partially as he put a bit too much strain on a still painful muscle. He'd been thinking this over while he lay in the bed. He wasn't really all that sure what position he did want, but even the few hours of counselling he'd had to do before the away mission had convinced him that it definitely wasn't his cup of tea. And the thrill of the mission itself was a drug that he just didn't want to give up. He was thinking either Ops or something security based, be it as a marine, or a fleeter. Something with more action anyway. He felt his grin returning as he thought of it.

As soon as the doctor had completed her physical, including the extra tests she'd managed to get herself into, Kanz left sickbay and returned to the Bridge. It wasn't that she wanted to get out of talking to the people in there... Okay so it partly was. But being in sickbay didn't suit her at all and the Bridge was much more familiar territory.
When she got there she was greeted with welcome news. "Commander Kanz, I was just about to call you. We're within half an hour of reaching Starbase Bellicose."
"Excellent, have you sent a message informing them of our position?"
"Yes Sir"
Kanz smiled and sat down in the Commanding Officer's chair. She had plans for Shore Leave that included relaxing and lots of calls home. It already felt like a lifetime since she'd seen Lucy.
She watched the Starbase get closer and closer on the viewscreen, before turning to watch the navigation officer on duty guide them in. She tapped on the console next to her, "All hands this is Commander Kanz. We've arrived at Starbase Bellicose. Shore leave now commencing with skeleton shifts left on board." She ended the communication and started giving instructions to those still on the Bridge.
"Check with engineering to make sure they actually talk to the starbase repair crews, they need to fix the right bits. And someone remind sickbay to transfer all injured patients to the starbase, they'll get better care over there for now." She paused for a second trying to think what else she had to say, "Oh, and enjoy your shore leave."

"All hands this is Commander Kanz. We've arrived at Starbase Bellicose. Shore leave now commencing with skeleton shifts left on board."
John heard the communication as he sat in his office writing a report.
"Computer activate the EMH please"
Holi appeared in front of him and he said "Shore leave has commenced, off you go, take your emitter and have a shop, and come back when you're ready i'll hold the fort here" He smiled at her, and she replied "Only if you're sure Doctor"
"I wouldn't have said it otherwise now would i?" He sad sarcastically, and smiled at her.
"Of Course"
John watched Holi leave, and walked into sickbay where his nurses were busying about doing what they do best. John stood in the centre of the room and spoke loudly "You've all heard the announcement, finish what yo're doing, write me a report and off you go"
John heard the murmuring as he walked back into his office and took a seat, he grapsed his cup of tea and tapped his com badge =/\="Commander Flanigan please report to my office, i need to talk"=/\=

"Not again," James murmured, just as he was about to hand his daughter her cup of tea. "I'm sorry honey, I'll be back soon," he promised.
"Don't worry dad," Antoinette answered with a sly smile, "I'll be fine. Are we still going shopping later? You promised..."
James ruffled her hair, just as Storey repeated his call. "Sure we are," he promised, then tapped his combadge. "On my way doctor, give me a minute to get my daughter settled." He looked down at the fourteen-year old. "You sure you'll be fine?"
The teen sighed. "Shoo," she teased, "I'm going to have a soak in the tub, so don't you dare walk in."
"Nothing there that I haven't seen when you were little," James grinned, a cheeky smile curving his mouth.
Toni cried out in exhasperation, tossing her orange at her father. "Ow!" James exclaimed, mock-fleeing their quarters. "Whimp!" he heard the girl call after him.
Minutes later, he walked into sickbay, looking happier than before. "You wanted to see me doctor?" he asked, somewhat cheerful. "Please make it quick, I promised Toni we'd go shopping."

John knew he'd probably annoyed the Commander, but he needed someone to talk to, and he didn't know who else to turn to. He was sitting at his desk doing a bit of report writing.
The door hissed open and the Commander walked in, "You wanted to see me doctor?" he asked, somewhat cheerful. "Please make it quick, I promised Toni we'd go shopping."
"i do apologise, but i was wondering if you'd like to .. ermm .. maybe go for a drink or something to eat sometime ? For me to apologise for my earlier behaviour when i first arrived here, and also i need a chat with someone, and i don't know who else to turn to" John's face grew red with embarrassment.
'oh bloody hell' John thought to himself as the Commander stood there looking at him, his little grey matter obviously ticking over what he'd just been asked
James looked down at the seated physician. "When?" he asked nochalantly, not seeing the harm in going for a drink with the doctor. Toni seemed to like the man, after all he'd let her help out in sickbay while he'd been away.
John thought for a moment "Whenever you are free, but if you're busy i don't wish to keep you" John smiled in response
Forcing himself to smile. James inclined his head ever so slightly in acceptance. "Toni still has her homework to finish, so now would work, as long as I meet her this afternoon." This time he smiled wryly. "We'll be looked at, I'm sure. How often does a girl go shopping with her old man?"
John thought again, and replied "i wouldn't know, i go shopping on my own never been married or anything, been too interested in my work to care about that, if ya let me finish this report for Commander Kanz and meet me in the mess in about ten minutes would that be acceptable ?"
"Certainly. And I have been married..." He trailed off, his expression clouding briefly with a distinct sadness. "My partner died eleven years ago," he added quietly. He nodded again. "Ten minutes," he repeated.
"Sorry to hear that" John said looking at James in a new light "see you up there" John said as James left him with his report.
The report sitting in front of him was incredibly boring but it must be done, an inventory of all stocks and medical equipment, but luckily Holi had ordered more than that was needed before they left for their last mission, now all that was needed was the basics. With that done, John stood up, straightened his uniform and proceeded to the mess where James was waiting, he strolled him and sat down when the waiter came by "White Wine with a dash of Soda Water please" John turned to James as he ordered his drink.
"Hot milk with coffee," James ordered, looking somewhat sheepish as the waiter walked off with an odd look on his face, rolling his eyes at a collegue. "What?" he asked, "never heard someone order coffee with loads of milk? I like my coffee hot, so hot milk otherwise I'll have cold coffee and I don't like that."
John looked a bit confused "i see, Tea or White Wine for me, either or, tea on shift, wine off shift" John laughed "anyway yeah errmmm the reason i wanted to talk to you about, i seem to have been a bit insensitive since i got on board, and i wanted you to know that if you wanted anyone to talk to that i'm here and you know where you can find me"
Shrugging, James picked up the large mug the waiter had set in front of him. "I'm a counselor," he answered, not particularly wanting to discuss his private life with the doctor. "but thank you." He didn't want to sound insensitive either. "So, what did you want to talk about?"
"Well, okay i've recently just broke up with a long term partner, i did say i wasn't married or anything, just had partners, and i feel like death warmed up, plus i've just found out i am a twin and she's out there somewhere, and i am muddled" John spilled out in one long rant.
"Hmm," the counselor murmured into his cup, glancing over the brim of it at the other man. "I understand," he proceeded, setting the cup back down, "my daughter is half of twins. Except she never knew her sister, not really. I don't think she remembers her, but I do." He nodded again. "Please, continue." An encouraging smile. "And with partners, you never felt the urge to get married? To ask her to stay with you forever?"
"Her ? I never said the partner was a her ..."
James' eyes widened ever so slightly, his cheeks flushing in embarassment. "True," he conceded, "you never said your partner was a she. I just assumed.." He trailed off, looking away for a second. "Nonetheless, the question stands..."
John looked away "that's the thing, I did, it just didn't work out as i wanted it to" Tears glistening in his eyes he turned back to face James.
Resisting the urge to just reach out, the counselor sighed. "It generally doesn't." He sighed again. "I would've liked to grow old with Tony, but alas it wasn't meant to be. Move around the galaxy with our girls and just be happy. Now, I just have Toni, she's the only family I have left." He didn't feel like it to mention his estranged parents just yet. He downed the last of his coffee and flagged the waiter to come over. "Another one please," he ordered, looking expectantly at John.
"i'll have another one too, i think i'll need it" john said to the waiter "thanks alot" He turned back to James "Strange how things work out isn't it ? You are very happy and then something goes tits up and ruins it all" John laughed "and here i am sitting here with a wine, spilling my feelings out"
James smiled, raising an eyebrow. "Well, I am a counselor aren't I?" he quipped, "people tend to talk to me about their feelings when they're comfortable doing so." He nodded towards the wine. "And I think you're getting comfortable." His smile widened a little as he leaned forward, this time actually reaching for John's hand. "Will it make a difference if I assure you that in the end, everything will turn out just right?"
John blushed and smiled "It does indeed, after this glass of wine i think i shall bid you farewell as i need some sleep, need to do some stuff tomorrow before i head off onto shore leave, you got any plans for it James ?"
"Not yet." James hadn't really thought about shoreleave; Toni would possibly be attending the school at Bellicose, so he'd have some time for himself for a while. "You?" It was his turn to blush now and he looked away, not removing his hand from John's.
"I shall enjoy staying in bed till strange hours, although i shall no doubt offer my hand at the Bellicose Medical Bay as i feel empty not doing anything, anyway" John finished his glass "i should be off, remember my offer still stands, farewell James" John nodded to him and took his leave.
"You could come with me," James hastily called after him, causing the doctor to stop dead in his tracks. "I mean....I'd like it if you'd come with us..."
John turned around "i think i'll pass but thank you for the offer, sleep sounds very appealing, i've been working non stop thanks to you lot on this ship, always something medically wrong going on around here i'll tell you that, good night James" He said and walked around and out into the corridor, the only thought running through his head was 'oh my gods' he reached the turbolift and headed towards his quarters.
