[Three weeks after the events of 12.1]
A new, fully constructed custom-variant of the Excalibur-class starship project lay nestled within the confines of the Utopia Planitia Shipyards orbiting the planet Mars. Circuitry and infrastructure had been installed and calibrated; crew both new and old had come aboard and begun settling in to their roles. Every last hull plate was securely in place and emblazoned several times upon them was the vessel's name: U.S.S. El Salvador NCC-750029-C
The bridge held more officers than usual since many were there simply to observe the launching ceremony. The main viewscreen followed the flight of a miniscule projectile preparing to impact the hull. Though none felt the slightest physical impact when the bottle broke upon the ship, the emotions of many swelled during the old-fashioned christening. As the champagne floated in blobs for mere instants before crystallizing in open space the viewscreen then shifted to show the many Flag Officers and Construction heads who were watching from the observation deck of the shipyard itself.
Admiral Hayes had shuttled in for the ceremony to do the official honors and her voice came through over the comm system even as those aboard watched her speak, =^=Effective immediately, Stardate 2399.0623, the U.S.S. El Salvador-C is commissioned in the service of the United Federation of Planets to carry on the best traditions and ideals of Starfleet. Commodore Savot, you and your crew are hereby authorized to begin your shakedown cruise at your discretion. May your journey be free of incident.=^=
Savot stood in front of the captain's chair on the bridge, bowing his head in grateful acceptance of the Admiral's words, "Acknowledged Admiral; I express my gratitude to the crew of the El Salvador and especially to the personnel of Utopia Planitia without whom this launch would not be taking place. We will do our utmost to honor the herculean efforts made by all those involved. Savot out."
As Admiral Hayes' smiling nod vanished from the screen to reveal the starfield directly ahead of the ship, Savot took his seat, looking to ensure all the bridge stations were manned, received confirmation that all umbillicals had been disengaged and their departure path was clear of equipment and EVA personnel. Then he nodded towards the helm, "Mr. Gaz, please take us out. Thrusters ahead until we've cleared the station, then proceed at your discretion to the designated coordinates for sub-warp systems performance tests."
Savot watched the starfield begin to shift ever so slightly as the new El Salvador started to move under her own power.

Yutaro had arrived on the ship and he went to report to his captain. "Ensign Yutaro reporting for duty Commodore. There are no problems with the engines" he said, and saluted.
Now the ship had just launched, he realized there was a problem in the engine room. There was an issue with warp core. "What is the matter crewman" asked Yutaro.
"The main engine has gone to automatic safe mode. It seems to be a system error," answered the crewman.
"I guess there is no way we could use the second engine..." Yutaro muttered. He accessed the main console to find out the issue. "Will you report it to Savot please?'' He shook his head, "Just what we needed at the start of the shakedown cruise..."

[Main Bridge]
As the ship prepared to leave its berth, Savot received an alert from Engineering on the arm console of his chair saying the Warp Core had entered an automatic safe-mode lockdown. Arching an eyebrow, Savot was about to respond when a video message came up on his screen showing Delbridge, =^=Delbridge here, just gimme one second Savot I need to check something with the shipyard. Thrusters are working fine you can keep using those no problem.=^=
Though curious, Savot decided to give Delbridge the moment he'd requested to check on the situation...
************************************************** [Main Engineering]
A human male with short brown hair wearing the yellow of an Engineer approached the newly arrived Ensign, "Chief Engineer... Yutaro is it? Hey good to meet ya; Lieutenant Commander Delbridge at your service. I know this is your show but since you just got here I'd appreciate it if you'd let me check this problem out. I think I know what's wrong and if we move fast we can avoid upsetting any of the VIPs."
With that Delbridge, worked the console and opened a communication channel to the Engineering section of the Shipyard that had handled the El Salvador's construction. A worried-looking Lieutenant appeared on the screen, =^=El Salvador, we're showing a lockdown of the Warp Core what's going on?=^=
Delbridge waved his hand back and forth to try and calm the man down and get him to stop talking politely, "Shipyard, I think your remote Core diagnostic is still actively broadcasting. Can you double-check for me and turn it off if I'm right?"
Delbridge's guess was that during the last system check someone had neglected to disengage the remote computer diagnostic that made sure the Warp Core stayed offline during construction/repair so that no workers could get injured by being inside the Core when it started up.
He rubbed the tips of his thumbs against his index and middle fingers; it was one of Delbridge's little quirks when he was impatient or nervous while having to do nothing but wait. Seconds ticked away until finally the shipyard Lieutenant came back to the screen looking like he'd eaten something that had gone bad, =^=Shipyard to Delbridge... assessment confirmed, and we just shut it down. Should be good to go now.=^=
His sick-stomached expression was understandable, somebody making a slip like that on launch-day for a new starship with Admirals and Politicians looking on in expectation was not great for the career. Which is exactly why Delbridge asked Savot to give him a second to handle it outside the spotlight so-to-speak.
Delbridge went over to Yutaro to explain exactly that, "Sorry about stepping into your territory there Ensign, but I've watched these folks put in a lot of hard hours getting this ship built and I didn't want anybody getting chewed out for a stupid mistake if I could help avoid it. It's not quite following the rulebook, but if anyone finds out and grumbles about it I'll be the only one that catches any heat for it."
He gave a mischievous half-grin before returning his expression a bit more serious, "I'll try not to step on your toes again. You're in charge, I'm just here to help during the shakedown. After that I'll probably head back to Propulsion Research on Jupiter. Anyway, if you'd like, you can tell the bridge we're all set now. Warp Core's fired up and ready to go."

Launch day of any ship was exciting. The launch of a ship continuing the name of a previous, with added suffix, was somehow more. The legacy of a name, the pride of her crew, the memories of past crew - all surfacing with the touch of the CONN and first forward momentum the ship has taken on her own abilities.
Noticing the drop in power from the warp core, Jamey drew from the impulse systems for the power needed to keep the reaction control system moving the ship. With the ease of the transfer of power, the RCS system didn't even flicker.
While the core issue was being investigated, the ship cleared the docking structure. With a slight adjustment of the CONN the flight path was altered to bring the dorsal view of the ship in full view of the grandstand-like windows of the ship yard facility. After passing, the flight path was altered again to a high parking orbit around Deimos, one of the moons of Mars. This was planned to be a built-in pause in the flight plan to validate systems before the first sub-warp phase. And it seemed it was going to put to good use. The thirty hour orbital period of Deimos provided less stresses for maintaining orbit than Phobos' seven our period.
Before the ship could reach the moon however the core was back up and the tension on the bridge was easing down. Reporting calmly, "Core power stable, impulse systems ready for sub-warp trials. After our built-in hold, sub-warp course for Triton laid in and confirmed."

Nayomi had never been at a ship launching before and had never dreamed of being a crew member of a new ship. She happily joined the rest of the senior staff on the bridge to witness the occasion, choosing to stand near the back of the rather crowded bridge. She expected the combined amount of pips, given the amount of high level brass, was enough to fill a shuttle pod.
She let out a small cheer with the rest when the bottle smashed and gave the admiral next to her a broad smile. People always told her she had the type of smile that would turn the most cloudy day into a sunny one and she loved to share it with others. This particular admiral was a rather solemn looking Tellerite who did not return her gesture.
There was some issues with the engines, clearly someone had missed a rather important step and the entire bridge seemed to hold their breath while the issue was resolved.but as far as she saw it a hiccupy launch meant a good shake down. or at least she thought that superstition went. Maybe it was the opposite.
There would be more festivities later in the day to mark the occasion, but once the ship reached warp, this particular event had come to a close. Nayomi piled into the turbo lift with several others and returned to sick bay. There she discovered a minor problem.
'What are all these crates doing here!?" the floor and bio beds looked crowded once again and when she left for the bridge everything had been put away. "The admirals will be doing a tour of the ship in an hour. this place is a mess! Did you re-pack everything!?'
Nurse Gilley gasped. 'oh no doctor. These just arrived, I think there was a mistake. It looks like they sent our requested shipment for hypo-sprays, medications and med kits twice. I did not have time to contact the shipyards and go through the paper work to have them sent back without delaying the launch."
Nayomi groaned and took a seat on a clear section of bio bed. "Normally I would say the more equipment the better, but we have used up all our allotted storage space and started to impede on Hyrdoponic's share." she rubbed her temples, her spots had started to itch. They always did that when she was feeling put out. "I wish you had contacted me as soon as this happened. Have it transported to my quarters. Maybe we will run into a supply ship or come across a colony we can pass it on to."
She had not even finished unpacking her own belongings. It was a good thing she was used to sharing a cramped dorm room with a room mate, she would be sharing her new quarters with half a medical bay's worth of supplies!|

Yutaro hadn't wanted to report to Savot, because he had a slight worry he would be blamed for being responsible. The ship was on shakedown cruise, but Yutaro imagined the Commodore wouldn't want things breaking straight away on the ship's first mission.

[Main Bridge]
Savot waited calmly while the situation in Engineering was cleared up, and Jamey reported navigational readiness for the next phase.
"Skilled handling of the power fluctuation, Mr. Gaz. Proceed at your discretion through the holographic obstacle course between ourselves and Triton", Savot replied, referring to the various nav-points that would read on sensors as asteroids, ship debris, various different navigational hazards a starship would likely encounter. Holographic obstacles would allow for sensor measurements to confirm or deny having cleared each obstacle, without risking any damage to the ship if the engine's needed tweaking and the El Salvador-C failed to clear one.
Savot then punched up a communication line to Engineering, =^=Ensign Yutaro; we're approaching the obstacle range. Please monitor engine performance and alert Commander Gaz of any power fluctuations or nav malfunctions. Check to confirm whether the engines are performing within the projected efficiency parameters. Savot out.=^=

Next came signalling sickbay, =^=Bridge to Doctor Chavet; begin medical response drills throughout the ship. Report any failure on the computers' part to recognize Emergency Medical Override codes on hatches and turbolifts. The locations of the drills are at your discretion; everyone aboard needs to be able to focus despite distractions so no department is off-limits. Lastly, despite being drills we should always perform to the best of our abilities as if the scenario were a genuine emergency; Savot out.=^=
<Response if any from Chavet>
*************************************************** [Main Engineering]
Delbridge listened to Savot dole out the next set of instructions, and noticed Yutaro looked a little anxious. The older engineer walked over and patted Yutaro on the back gently with a friendly grin, "Don't look so glum, Ensign. You just got here so obviously the engine hiccup wasn't your fault. Just do your best; that's all Savot asks of anyone aboard. So then, Chief, where do you want me?"

=^= Aye Captain=^= Nayomi replied. “Right then team, let's start running these drills. Grett, Nichols and Verna, start checking the medical overides. We can't test them all, so just randomize it and report the results to me. You have eight hours.” The three technicians nodded and headed towards one of the terminals to begin their work. Nayomi turned to the head nurse “Janice, come into my office, I have another drill I want to run I will need your help with.”
Once in her office Nayomi took a seat “I saw on your record that you worked in makeup effects on the side while studying. Is that correct?”
Janice was clearly confused. “Well yes doctor, my sister is an actress and I helped with some of her shows.”
“How is your gore” Nayomi smiled.
“Convincing enough that my sister's production of Titus Andronicus came to a halt when members of the audiance thought Chiron and Demetrius really cut Lavinia's hands off”
“Excellent, I am going to recruit a few crew members for you to work with. I am going to run some drills on the crew to test their response time when they come across someone injured.” Nayomi had an instructor pull this move in her first year of medical school. It made her realise how much of her text book learning coudl fly out the window as soon as she saw a little blood. She needed to know how the crew would respond in a real emergency and this would be a good indication.
“Do you think that captain will approve?”
“I have a feeling this is exactly the type of thing he would approve of, but I will talk to him.”
With that Janice started collecting the supplies she would need and Nayomi headed for the bridge. “Captain, could I have a word in your ready room, I would like to pass a drill idea by you before I begin.”
Savot nodded, stood and they headed for the ready room. Once the door was closed Nayomi passed her idea by him. “So, is it a go Captain? Janice is already gathering what she needs and I already know which crew members I would like to recruit.”

Given the likelihood that the discussion with Doctor Chavet wouldn't take too long and the nigh-nonexistent chance of anything disastrous happening during the obstacle course, Savot excused himself and accompanied the Doctor to the Ready Room. Upon entering he took his seat at his desk, not so much because it was where the captain sits but more in case anything Chavet wished to discuss required entering authorization into the computer or making a note in the log Savot would have his console within easy reach.
Nayomi wasted no time in presenting the details of her idea, “So, is it a go Captain? Janice is already gathering what she needs and I already know which crew members I would like to recruit.”
Savot arched his brow, intrigued at the somewhat unorthodox plan. He not only liked the idea, but the breadth of creative thinking shown by the Doctor who was positing it.
"By all means, Doctor. You have a green light. Should you require additional victim resources please make use of the shipwide holographic projection systems to simulate any species and injury you deem appropriate for the drills", Savot stood by a moment to address any counter statements or questions Doctor Chavet might have, then they both left the Ready Room once more to attend their duties.
Savot resumed his seat with heightened confidence in the new El Salvador's well-being. He'd been pleased to see an officer with Commander Gaz' experience ship out as a senior officer once again, and now the ship's Chief Medical Officer showed quite a bit of promise as well. He regretted the absence of Stacey Jackson's counseling background both with regards to molding a new crew together and in working with Starfleet cadets, but Hannah Jackson appeared quite capable in that field herself.
Other officers would no doubt join the roster, but as Savot watched the beginnings of Jamey's helm maneuvers the vulcan captain thought to himself that they'd just have to catch up with the El Salvador-C wherever in the cosmos her duties guided her.
