The war had come as if from nowhere, much like these Romulans. Nobody knew much about them, in fact, nobody had even seen a Romulan. The war had been going on for several months, but there hadn’t been any major action, a few minor incidents but no war altering battles.
Captain Shawn Adams stroked the stubble on his chin as he looked out of the window of his ready room. He didn’t seem to have much time for shaving these days, all the war reports and coordination with command and other ships took up a great deal of his time. Nobody on Earth had really expected this, Starfleet seemed too young to be thrown into a situation like this. They’d had to rush more ships into production, especially of the NX Class.
Luckily, Starfleet did not stand alone. With the founding of the Coalition of Planets, Earth had friends to stand with her which was fortunate. With the help of the military might of the Andorians and the Vulcans and the ship yards on Coridan, Earth was not doomed.
Challenger had seen her share of action, some battles with Romulan vessels, things like that. But, Adams mused, at least the war had at least one positive effect; everyone was a lot closer. On a large scale, this meant new ties with other worlds, and the enforced unity of the human people. On a smaller scale, Adams noticed how close his crew had all become, they were very different from the mismatch of personalities that had been thrown together a year ago, they’d melded into a team, become friends. Adams felt close to every one of them, even Wolfgang Rickman, although they still didn’t always get along, Adams had come to depend on his tactical insight. He trusted each of them with his life.
Also, Adams was closer to his fellow Captains, especially on the NX Classes; as Starfleet’s first line of defence, they all had to speak to each other at least once a week. The burden of command rested on them all. True, HQ was giving the overall orders, but they were the ones out on the front line, making it count.
Adams pressed a button on his terminal, “Captain’s log, October 12th 2156. We’ve been on patrol in the…”
“Captain Adams to the bridge please.” Came Benzin’s voice over the comm..
“Computer, pause recording.” Said Adams as he rose from his chair and exited through the door.
As he entered the bridge, Commander Benzin vacated the command chair. Adams sat down in it.
“Report.” He said.
“We’re receiving a distress call from the Andorian freighter Danara, audio only.” Reported Logan.
“On speakers.” Said Adams.
Heavy with interference, a message came over the speakers, “…dorian freighter Danara…ower failure…possible Romulan…assistance…”
“It cuts off there.” Said Logan.
“Helm, set a course to intercept the Danara and engage and maximum warp.” Ordered Adams.
Adams checked a nearby console to see which ships were closest to them.
“Jack, contact Atlantis and Enterprise and notify them of our course change. Tell them we may need assistance.” He said to Logan.
With that, Adams went back to his ready room to finish off his log.
OOC: I suggest you take this opportunity to fill us in on your characters and their feelings etc.

Walking the length of the engine room Kirk couldn't help but have pride in the way his engineers worked, and the pride they had. Although the Enterprise had become the ship everybody wanted to serve on, Kirk was fond of this ship and its crew. It was his home now.
During the last year Kirk had the chance to think about everything that had happened, the good and the bad. With a single computer virus they happened to set back an entire planet several years. It wasn't the proudest day for the Challenger or it's Chief Engineer. Thinking more Kirk remembered how several months after that they crew had saved a Vulcan ship from a random warp core melt down.
Kirk remembered being injured during an explosion on board the Vulcan ship, and had it not been for Jack Logan, Kirk knew he would have been killed on that ship. Jack's actions were so heroic that Captain Adams promoted Logan to Lieutenant Junior Grade shortly after.
The onset of the war with the Romulans wasn't the surprise that everybody was expecting. In Kirk's opinion it was only a matter of time before humans ran across a race that would become aggressive. He was just happy to find out they were on even footing.
"Power regulation looks good." Kirk said looking over information on a computer screen, "Lets run a test on the hull polarization emitters."
"Aye sir." Replied an engineer.
Stretching his back out Kirk found the war was hell on engineers. If he wasn't running tests on the defensive systems, he was running tests on the weapons. If he found he had free time he would sit at a computer and run simulations to try and improve the effectiveness of the hull polization.
With out notice red lights began to flash in engineering, it was a new system put into place to warn the engineers when a starship was going to maximum warp. This warning kept the engineers on their toes for any possible disuptions of the warp field.
"Alright people, look alive." Kirk yelled out to his engineers.

The bridge of NX-03 Challenger was healing from battle wounds, would it ever completely heal? No one really knew, but the her crew would do everything in there power to keep it together. The crew had now been together for a year now and they had grown extremely close. No one made a more drastic change than Jack Logan, the ships communications officer.
The breakout of the war really hit Jack hard, he had never expected it. Though Andy seemed to have been expecting it. When news came that Earth was at war, Jack laughed thinking that it was a cruel and bad joke. When Jack realized that it wasn't a joke he almost screamed out in horror.
That was then and in that time Jack had grown up a bit. He no longer expected to find friends everything he went. He no longer trusted a stranger and he no longer felt the urge to go explore. Jack's dream was to explore, bu the Romulan War just snapped all of that out of him. When the he realized this, he almost quit. No one, but Andy knew how close he had gotten to quitting.
Andy didn't talk him out of quitting, he was a friend and told him that he would support his decesion. Jack ended up staying realizing that this was the only way to protect his family back home on Earth.
"Jack are you contemplating our miserable lives again?" Captain Adams asked Jack.
"Of course sir," Jack replied getting back to work. It was common knowledge that Jack liked to reminice on the past. It was the only way he could get through things.
"Well what was it this time?" Commander Benzin asked from his console.
"Oh nothing, it was nothing," Jack turning around pretending to work.
"Captain, what did the doctor tell you about Ensign Sevik?" Commander Benzin asked. Captain Adams had just recieved a new update on the status of the ships helmsman. He still had not recovered from the attack he sustained almost six months ago.
The senior staff was known to go visit Sevik down in sickbay everyday. They would sit next to him and just talk to him as he if could listen. They knew he couldn't respond, but it seemed to be helping. His visitations were a modified shift, the Captain would go Monday, Commander Benzin would go Tuesday, Jack would go Wednesday and Thursday, and so on. Jack even got Andy to go once in while.
"The Doctor has seen a 3% growth in brain activity," Captain Adams reported," its going slow, but things are going as expected."
"I wish we could get some Vulcan Healers, but they have been sent up to the front with the Vulcan fleets," Commander Benzin responded.
"Don't we all," Captain Adams said as he went into his ready room. He was not there long since Jack picked up an Adorian distress call. Captain Adams immediately rushed back onto the bridge.
“Report.” He said.
“We’re receiving a distress call from the Andorian freighter Danara, audio only.” Jack reported.
“On speakers.” Said Adams.
"Heavy with interference, a message came over the speakers, “…dorian freighter Danara…ower failure…possible Romulan…assistance…”
"Understood, Captain," Jack said as he initiated the alert to Engineering. After doing this he sent out a short but right to the point message.
"Hoshi, Lucas, recieved distress call, Romulan involvement likely. Please help"

30 minutes later, they arrived at the site of the freighter. As Adams entered the bridge, he didn't know what to expect, but at least he had the NX-01 and the NX-05 on standby if they were needed.
"Onscreen." ordered Adams as he sat down in his chair.
The freighter appeared on the viewscreen at the front of the bridge. It looked normal enough.
"Open a channel." said Adams.
"Open."
"Freighter Danara, this is Captain Shawn Adams of the Starship Challenger, may we render assistance?"
Nothing happened. Adams looked over at Logan who shook his head.
"Are there any lifesigns?" Adams asked Saberwyn.
"Can't tell sir; their cargo is interfering with our sensors." Said Saberwyn.
"Are there any signs of Romulan vessels in the area?" Adams asked Benzin.
"No sir, but I don't need to remind you of their stealth technology." Returned Benzin.
Adams thought for a moment then moved over to the communications station, "Jack, I want you to take a landing party over there, find out what's going on. Take Desauma, Andy and Wolf with you. I don't need to remind you to be careful."
Normally, the Captain lead the landing party, but since the war started, Adams and his fellow Captains had found out that the Romulans had a habit of using their stealth technology to sneak up on ships. Adams needed to be on the bridge if that happened.
As the others headed to the shuttlebay, Adams sat back down in his chair and wondered. Was this another Romulan attack, or was it something else?
Only time would tell.

Desauma was hard at work in Science Lab 1. Since the start of the war with the Romulans, Desauma had been working on a way to get shields on the Starfleet ships. With the war there hadn't had much time for soil samples or plantary surveys. The science and engineering departments were working on weapon systems. The research had been a colaboration with the Science officers on six other Starfleet ships including Enterprise, Columbia, and Atlantis. The work was promissing and proceeding with help from the Coalition of Planets. He was running a simulation which was giving him difficulty. He left the lab and headed for the bridge. As soon as he walked onto the bridge he was greeted by Captain Adams. "Hello Desauma how is your day going?" Adams asked as Saberwyn sat at his station. "The research is proving to be more difficult than initaly believed," he replied. Captain Adams and Commander Benzin had a brief talk with Ensign Logan about Ensign Sevik, then Captain Adams left the bridge. He was not there long since Logan picked up an Andorian distress call. Captain Adams immediately rushed back onto the bridge.

"No sir, but I don't need to remind you of their stealth technology." Returned Benzin. Desauma used the sensors to see if there were any tachyon emissions, anti-protons, or neutrino emissions. There were none. "Commander even with the the cloaking device there are signs that do give away if they are in the area," Desauma said. Adams thought for a moment then moved over to the communications station, "Jack, I want you to take a landing party over there, find out what's going on. Take Desauma, Andy and Wolf with you. Captain Rickman and Ensign Kirk were there with phase pistols. Once the group was on the shuttlepod they launched from Challenger.

Rickman had seen the reactions to the war before. It was surprising how fast mostly opposing factions would band together to some extent when a fully opposing faction came up with violent intentions. The danger of course was what happened once it was over. Then all the infighting came up again and often worse. When the war began Starfleet suddenly received massive funding. The ship construction programme was sped up as much as possible even though so far the Romulans had not struck anywhere near Earth and right now the war was in a strange sort of skirmishing stalemate. Rickman couldn't help wondering when one side was going to try for a big push, but his money was on the Romulans doing it first. Like all the MACOs, he had been alarmed by how much they had been forgotten. They received no new men and no new equipment recently and that much they had was not being developed as quickly as the ships were. Also, the MACO command structure seemed to be becoming more and more subservient to the Starfleet one despite the Starfleet one being far less experienced in warfare of any kind. Calls for a push into the Romulan territory from the Generals had been ignored by Starfleet on the basis that the Vulcans were not doing so even though the Vulcans were less tactically aware than the human Generals. Something strange was going on; Starfleet was either being petulant or trying to suppress the land forces for their own gain, which was becoming dangerous. The irony was that the best line of defence the MACOs had against the politics were the Starfleet crews they served with. The crews needed the tactical expertise of the MACOs that Starfleet Command was trying to rid themselves of and the MACOs trusted the crews and their hospitality.
At the news of the Andorian vessel Rickman expected to be required. Even though the shuttle had limited capacity, Rickman still brought Ericson with him again although he would have to find himself a spot on the floor. Fortunately they were not beaming into the unknown where they would be open to landing fire. The tactic here would be to have the shuttle land, open the door and have Ericson move out first to cover anyone waiting for them without good reason. Then They would move in one-two fashion to the bridge where they could barricade themselves if necessary. The second fire team would stand by in the other active shuttlepod and the third by the transporter in case either approach was needed. It was unlikely that the few on the first shuttlepod could hold out if there was a large group of Romulans looking for a barney. Rickman checked his MACO rifle and Ericson checked his. In this case Ericson was carrying both guns since the priority was firepower over mobility. Without the sensors there was unlikely to be a beam-out; all the sensors could reliably target would be the docked shuttlepods so they would be used as landing platforms for team three if it was needed.
They took positions in the shuttle. 'When you're ready, Mr Logan' Rickman said
OOC:I changed the transport method to the shuttlepods because that's what Adams put as well as it being impossible to use the transporters without seeing where you were aiming.

"I know," Jack responded as he immediately left the bridge and headed towards the armory. Jack didn't like these type of situations, but he accepted them as necessary. Though he was extremely grateful that Wolf would be going with them. The start of the war was very controversial with the MACO's, but Jack knew that without them he would be dead now.
Jack quickly got ready and met up with his team in the shuttlebay.
"Wolf, Andy, Desauma, Mr. Ericson," Jack said as he entered the bay. It was weird being in command of an away team, but he knew that he could depend on theses people.
'When you're ready, Mr. Logan' Rickman said
"Wolf please don't call me Mr.," Jack said smiling as he motioned for everyone to get into the shuttle. It would be a tight fit, but this would be the safest way to do this.
"Desauma, when your ready," Jack said as he strapped a his vest on and gripped his phaser.

Kirk made his way to the shuttle bay, it have been awhile since he had to go on an away mission. As he entered the shuttle bay Kirk was quickly given a energy absorbing vest and a phase pistol and holster belt. Strapping on the holster Kirk quickly checked the pistol as he had been taught by the MACO's then holstered the pistol to put on the vest.
"Gentlemen." Kirk said as he stepped into the cramped shuttle taking a seat next to Saberwyn., "It seems that both the Starfleet Science Community and the Corp of Engineers are both working on the creation of shield system for starships. A friend of mine sent me a message informing me of your input into this project." Kirk said.

"It seems that both the Starfleet Science Community and the Corp of Engineers are both working on the creation of shield system for starships. A friend of mine sent me a message informing me of your input into this project." Kirk said as Desauma took the shuttlepod out of the launch bay. "I have been co-ordinating with the science officers on six other NX ships," Desauma replied as he took the pod toward the Andorian freighter. "I got a few ideas about using the deflector dish, but I am having a problem getting enough power to sustain a bubble for any extended period of time, got any thoughts?" Kirk asked. "That is an interesting idea. I think I should contact Commander T'Pol to find out how the Vulcans and Andorians power their shields. We might be able do something similar. We are approaching the Danara," Desauma directing the last comment to Logan. "Get us docked," Jack replied. Desauma complied and within a few seconds they were docked to the port side of the freighter. The group stood up and readied their weapons. Rickman stood at the hatch waiting for the ok from Jack Logan. Logan nodded, Rickman opened the hatch and the five left the pod into the dark Andorian freighter. [Tag: Landing party]

"Thy'lin, get the child into the office, if it is the Romulans or the Orions, we'll try to fight them off." Said Commander Telas.
Telas watched as Thy'lin did as he was instructed and took the boy from the bridge. He liked the human boy; he was very smart and knew a lot about starships. The colour of his hair still amused Telas. Andorian hair didn't vary much in colour, so to meet a boy with ginger hair was somewhat interesting to Telas.
Even if it weren't his mission to transport the boy safely to Alpha Centauri, Telas would have wanted to protect him.
Telas took out his own gun and motioned five of his officers to join him as they went to meet these intruders.
The apprehension built as Telas and his officers moved down the corridor. They didn't know why their systems had suddenly gone down, but they had, and now, they didn't even know who had docked with them, friend or foe.

The shuttlepod docked and Rickman and Ericson stood by the door. Rickman opened it and Ericson burst out, swinging his gun as he looked to cover anyone outside. As it was, there were none. Rickman moved out and forwards so the two were facing in opposite directions. 'The bridge should be furter forward and up several decks.' Rickman said. Unforunately the ship being down meant that they couldn't find out from the computer exactly where, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. From looking at the outside, if the decks were all the same height it should be three decks above. 'Saberwyn, we'll lead in leapfrog motion. Ericson will stay in the middle as heavy support. Logan, keep an eye to the rear and stay behind Ericson. Kirk, stay with him and watch the scanner for anything nearby coming at as. Move out' The five moved their way gradually towards the bridge. It was difficult to find anywhere to leapfrog forwards to since the hall was generally straight and most of the doors were locked.
Eventually, Kirk's scanner picked up signs of people. 'There are a few people coming towards us. I can't tell how many' he whispered 'Distance?' Rickman asked '20 metres?' Kirk said, sounding unsure. Apparently the hand scanner was just as affected as the ship ones. 'Fall back in good order' Rickman ordered 'we'll find somewhere to entrench. Logan look ahead, Saberwyn stay with me' So the group moved back down the corridor, Logan and Kirk moving forwards, Rickman, Saberwyn and Ericson moving backwards, turning only to check they weren't going to fall over anything. After about 20 yards they reached one of the unlocked rooms. Ericson kept cover whilst the others dragged furniture into the corridor to make a ten second barricade. They had just finished it when the others came into partial view in the darkness. From behind the turned over tables and boxes, Rickman spoke to Logan. 'You're up, Logan. We need to know who they are and if they're hostile. I'll hold your gun. If they start shooting, drop to the floor and we'll cover you.' Assuming they don't shoot him first, Rickman thought. Strangely, the group was coming at them in disorder, not in any professional way, suggesting these weren't any sort of attacking force or anyone used to fighting. As soon as the GPMG started up, it was likely they'd be down in seconds. <Logan>

As they moved down the corridor, Telas checked with one of his officers.
"They've moved into compartment 016."
This made no sense to Telas, if this was a party of invaders, why were they hiding?
They moved as close as they could, but kept cover, behind bulkheads.
Telas threw caution to the wind, knowing that these could very well be the last moments of his life, and readying his weapon, he shouted, "Who are you and what do you want?"

Ericson was the first of Jack's team to enter the Andorian frighter. Jack didn't feel like he was in any immediate danger, but that's why he wasn't a MACO. It was there job to take caution, plus the MACO's were prepared and trained to do this.
Once Jack made his way into the frieghter, it took his eyes a few seconds to get used to the darkness. He had never been on an Andorian ship, but its schematics weren't that confusing. Jack could easily tell where the bridge was located.
Everything was going as planned until Andy's scanner picked up some lifesigns. They were closing on them and they couldn't tell if they were friend or foe.
This uncertainity caused them to become very uncomfortable. The team backed into the corridor until they found an open room. Jack stayed behind and checked out the view. After a few moments, Jack made his way into the room where Rickman told him to...
'You're up, Logan. We need to know who they are and if they're hostile. I'll hold your gun. If they start shooting, drop to the floor and we'll cover you.'
Jack didn't know if he wanted to follow Rickman's plan. He didn't feel very safe without his weapon, but if he did take it was almost a certanity that whoever was closing on them would fire on sight.
"I suppose your right, but if I die I will haunt you," Jack said smiling trying to keep his stomach in check. Jack looked once again at his crewmates and walked out into the open corridor. He thought he saw someone move in the corner of his eye, but he couldn't be sure. It was about a minute of silence until Jack heard what he was waiting for.
"Who are you and what do you want?"
Jack saw a middle sized Andorian come into view. He was visablly shaking, but he stayed his ground. He's brave, Jack mused, but he's as scared as I am.
"I am Lt. Junior Grade Jack Logan of the Starship Challenger, we have come here in response to your distress call," Jack said," we tried to contact your ship but no one responded."

Telas moved forward cautiously, trying to get a glimpse of the man. He saw him, a human male in a Starfleet uniform. Telas sighed with relief, a friendly face. He moved to where the human could see him, holstering his weapon.
"I am commander Telas of the Andorian Freighter Danara."
The human signalled to his companions and they came out from their hiding places.
"Your ship is of the NX Class, correct?" asked Telas
"Yes." said Jack, "What happened here?"
"We were transporting a human boy, the son of the First Minister of Alpha Centauri, back to his home. He travelled to Andoria with his father, but his father had to leave unexpectedly. We had heard rumours that the Orions may try to kidnap the boy, but our government thought little of it, we believe it was they who attacked us."
"But your message said something about the Romulans." said Rickman.
"I'm sure the Romulans would love to get their hands on a live human specimen, I thought they could be involved." said Telas.
"So what happened when they attacked you?" asked Kirk.
"They fired some sort of pulse at us, it disabled most of our systems. I don't know why they didn't kidnap the boy or finish us off, but that's all I know." said Telas.
"We're ready to help with your repairs, Commander..." said Logan but Telas cut him off.
"No, my crew can do that. Right now the boy is in danger, we must get him to your ship and you must deliver him to safety." Said Telas.
"I'll have to contact my Captain to confirm it." said Logan, and did so. He explained the situation to Adams.
"Okay, bring the boy over here," said Adams, "I'll contact Starfleet and request orders."
------------
Adams walked onto the bridge and addressed the officer at the helm.
"Set a course for Alpha Centauri and engage at warp five when the shuttle has docked."
"Aye sir."
Adams walked across the bridge to the elevator and made his way down to E Deck.
Once the shuttle had docked, Adams entered the back and helped his men of the shuttle. They were accompanied by a boy with ginger hair.
"This is Adam Harper." said Logan.
"Hello Adam, I'm Captain Shawn Adams."
He shook hands with the boy.
"What's the situation Captain?" asked Logan.
"We're on course for Alpha Centauri, Atlantis and Enterprise are covering our patrol." Replied Adams, "You can all return to your posts, I'll show Adam to his quarters."
<Tag All>
When they had all left, Adams led the boy through the corridor.
"So, how old are you Adam?"
"Fourteen."
Shawn had been wondering, he was a little small for his age, but not greatly.
"Have you been on many starships?"
"Yeah, my dad travels a lot, but I've never been on an NX Class before."
Shawn could hear the excitement in his voice.
"You interested in starships?"
"Yeah," said the boy enthusiastically, "I wanna be in Starfleet when I'm older."
Shawn smiled and opened the door as they reached it.
"Probably not quite what you're used to, being the son of the First Minister." said Shawn as the boy went inside.
"It's fine thank you, Captain." said the boy, beaming.
"You get settled in, I'll give you the tour later." said Shawn.
-------------------
They had seen all the major areas of the ship, engineering, sickbay, the science labs, the armoury, but now they came to the part the boy was really interested in, the bridge.
First, they went to the science station, Shawn introduced Adam to Desauma and explained some of the functions that were performed at that station.
Then they moved over to the communications station.
"This is Jack Logan, our communications officer..."
"Captain," said Benzin, "take a look at this."
Adams crossed to Benzin.
"It looks like an Orion ship." Said Benzin.
"Polarize the hull plating!" said Adams.
Suddenly, the whole bridge was thrown into darkness.
"What's going on?" Exclaimed Adams
There was a strange buzzing noise that grew and then faded.
In the pitch dark, Adams couldn't see anything.
"Nothing's responding Captain!" Came Saberwyn's voice.
They remained that way for maybe a few more minutes then, auxilliary lights came on.
Adams scanned the bridge and didn't see it at first, but then he noticed the abscence at the communications station. He crossed the bridge quickly.
Jack's uniform lay on his chair, his boots on the floor. Right next to it, a heap of clothes also lay where the boy had been standing.
Adams stared at the sight for a moment then grabbed a scanner.
"Are they dead?" asked Saberwyn, breaking the silence that had now fallen on the bridge.
Adams consulted the scanner, "I'm not picking up any organic material. I'd say they've been transported.
"But why take Logan as well?" asked Rickman.
"Maybe their transporters aren't very advanced, they probably just locked on to the area that the boy was in and got Jack as well." said Adams
"And why leave their clothes?" asked the officer at helm.
"Maybe their transporter can only transport organic material...either way, I don't think the Orions care if their prisoners have clothes."
"Have we got sensors?" asked Adams, knowing what the answer would be.
"No." Said Saberwyn "Everything's dead."
"We have to get back online." said Adams, "Desauma, get down to the engine room and apprise them of the situation, assist with repairs if needed. Wolf, we're vulnerable, put MACOs on guard at all sensitive areas of the ship."

Kirk was happy to get back to the Challenger, away missions were not his favorite thing. Checking in his weapon with the MACO armory officer Kirk felt a sense of relief but knew the feeling was temporary.
As he walked back to Engineering he kept thinking about what the Andorian had said about the young boy they had brought back to the ship.
"They fired some sort of pulse at us, it disabled most of our systems. I don't know why they didn't kidnap the boy or finish us off, but that's all I know."
The idea that a single blast from this energy weapon seemed to occupy almost all of Kirk's thoughts. The best he knew about most of the other races technology was that nobody was close to making such a weapon that would fit onto a starship.
After awhile Kirk watched Captain Adams and the young boy heading his way, with a quick wave to the Captain he caught their attention. Kirk was surprised to see the Captain taking the young boy on a tour of the ship but quickly realized they had never had any civilians on board so he couldn't understand why he found it weird. It was at that moment Kirk realized a starship was no place for civilians.
"Adam this is Ensign Andy Kirk, he is the man who runs our engine room." Captain Adams said introducing Kirk to Adam.
The conversation was short with the boy looking around at all the equipment in engineering. As Adam and Captain Adams left engineering Kirk felt a sudden relief come over him. It wasn't every day that he had to be a tour guide, and he was happy it was over.
"Jackson," Kirk said, "I want to see those engine reports."
"Aye sir." Jackson replied.
After a few moments Jackson came back with a scanner in his hand and gave it back to Kirk. Looking at the information in front of him Kirk began to frown with confusion. The scanner was showing his readings that he had never seen.
"What do you make of this?" Jackson asked.
"I don't know..." Kirk replied, "But these aren't the reports I was asking about."
"I know but I thought you should take a look at this fir-" Jackson was cut off when everything in Engineering went black.
"Report!" Kirk shouted over the sudden confusion.
"What's going on?" Somebody yelled from across the room.
"Everybody stay calm." Kirk said as he tried to feel his way around the pitch black engine room.
Looking down Kirk wondered why the scanner had gone dead, he had hoped to use the LCD's glow as a make shift flash light. Feeling his way to the end of the station Kirk reached underneath the console and opened an emergency container that housed a small flash light.
Just as Kirk turned on the flash light other lights began to pop on. The small light calmed the nervous engineers. Kirk's mind was racing, he thought about the Andorian ship, the Romulans and most importantly the anti-matter that fed the engines. He knew for the moment that whatever had hit them hadn't disrupted the magnetic seals that kept the anti-matter from coming into contact with the containment housing and destroying the ship.
Just as Kirk reached the stairs the red emergency lights came on. Turning around he noticed a lot of the engineers had massed into several large groups.
"Jackson!" Kirk yelled into the dark red room.
"Sir?" Jackson replied waving his hand.
"Get things organized down here, I need to get up to the bridge and reply our situation to the Captain." Kirk said.
"Aye sir."
Stepping onto the elevator Kirk hoped that the auxiliary power would keep the elevators working, he really wasn't looking forward to climbing up to A deck. Pushing the button he was surprised to find they were in working order.
The door opened onto the bridge and Kirk noticed the confusion was just as thick up here as it was down in engineering. The only difference was that Captain Adams was running from station to station trying to get a report from the department heads.
"Captain, engines are down as well as most anything that is electronic." Kirk said.
"I was just about to head down to you." Saberwyn said, "Do you need any help?"
"All that we can get." Kirk said patting the man on the shoulder.
"Andy, get those engines back on line ASAP!" Adams shouted from the other side of the bridge.
"Aye sir!" Kirk shouted back.
Turning around Kirk and Saberwyn ran into Rickman. He was holding two phase pistols and belts. Kirk had no idea where he had come from but he was there.
"You two, take these. There is a chance we could be boarded. If you happen to run into a hostile down hesitate to fire." Rickman said handing the two officers each a phase pistol and a pistol belt then he walked past them to arm the rest of the bridge officers.
Getting onto the elevator Kirk quickly strapped the belt on and checked the settings on the pistol to make sure they were set to stun. Holstering the weapon he pushed the button the elevator began its decent back down to engineering.

The disappearance of Logan and the boy had been surprising to say the least and the power of the pulse had been equally so. Rickman didn't know what it was; he suspected an EM pulse but he wasn't an engineer so there might be other things which created similar effects. 'Wolf, we're vulnerable, put MACOs on guard at all sensitive areas of the ship.' Rickman went straight to it, but knew the few MACO's they had would not be enough. First, he sought permission from Benzin to use the Starfleet security officers, which Benzin agreed to. Then he went to a hidden supply cabinet at the back of the bridge. He had stashed two phase pistol belts here. One for him, one for Benzin or Atkins depending on who was around. He checked the pulse hadn't disabled them by firing against the floor. Two black marks showed they were fine. Since Benzin was now off the bridge, probably making sure his men were armed, Rickman gave them to Saberwyn and Kirk. He knew Saberwyn had enough experience with a pistol to be a decent marksman and Kirk as an engineer had the guts to walk into a dangerous situation. 'You two, take these. There is a chance we could be boarded. If you happen to run into a hostile don't hesitate to fire.'
Rickman made his way to the MACO quarters and called his men into the corridor outside his quarters, which he thought of as the MACO HQ. He found the men almost ready. 'We have been attacked by Orion ships. I don't know what they're like, but they're organic so shoot as normal. Make sure you have conventional side arms since they have some sort of energy draining device. Night vision goggles too. Placement; fire team one take sickbay. Team two, main engineering. Team three, stay central in case of boarding. We'll have Starfleet security at the air locks to hold them until you can arrive. Smith, Grey and Atkins, we'll take the bridge. Smith, bring your SMG.' 'What about the armoury, sir?' Atkins asked 'Benzin's men will watch that.'
It was true that few attackers ever relied on finding the enemy's weapons to use when inside the target, but there was no point taking risks. With armed Starfleet security in every hall, teleporting in would be very dangerous due to the lag between appearing and being complete. Also, any attempt to move into sickbay, engineering, the bridge or the decks of those would be met with a swift hail of energy and bullets. About the only option then would be to come in the air lock and fight tooth and nail to the target location. In that case, hopefully the Starfleet men would be able to hold long enough for the MACOs to arrive.
On the bridge, Adams didn't look too happy at the sight of the handguns and Smith's MP5, mounted with telescopic and laser sights. It was probably because he suspected the damage it could do to the computers and walls. However, if their rifles had their power drained somehow, it would come down to these. Also, the sound of the guns was terrifying to someone not used to fighting and the psychological impact even on hardened troops who were unused to them was not to be underestimated. It was fortunate for Sevik that he was stable in sickbay. The Vulcan sense of hearing risked damage from close proximity to the loud sounds. Rickman hoped the Orions might use similar tactics to Starfleet with equipment, where the combatants wore no armour and carried only one weapon. If so, they might retreat in the face of well equipped, armed and trained troops.
'Critical areas are secured by either Marines or security.' Rickman reported to Adams 'All Marines are armed with energy and ballistic weapons in case their pulse device has hand versions too.' He wondered if Adams had noticed the MACOs were also wearing bayonets. The rifles had not been designed to take them, but the sizable knives were the alternative to stun batons in a no-energy environment. Anyone coming on THIS ship was going to find themselves fried, holed, stunned or skewered.

"Good. Let's hope it's only a precaution." said Adams, frowning at the black marks that Rickman's little phase pistol test had left on his floor.

Jack somehow had felt it coming, but when it came there was nothing that he could do to stop it from happening. He realized that he was being transported off the ship a second before the process finished. The next second he was on a slimy, gooing surface. The coldness of the floor stung against his now naked body, it felt as he was being prodded by thousands of little daggers.
Jack opened his eyes and looked around the pitch black room. He could feel someone's breathing and he realized that it must of been Adam's.
"Adam are you alright?" Jack asked trying to find some light and the boy.
"Yes I am here, but its really uncomfortable, it feels like i'm...," Adams said and Jack joined him.
"being stabbed with knives."
"Yes, you too then," Jack said as he heard a creak coming not so far away. There was little light, but Jack could see someone standing at the door way.
"Put these on, our clients would not want to see you like that," the person said as they through two pair of ragged torn clothes. The door closed almost immediately, but not before Jack found the clothes and started to put it done. Once he finished he gave Adam his clothes, which was a bit harder than expected.
As if they knew they had already dressed the door opened and someone said,"Follow us."

Desauma took a few moments, after he returned to his post , to contact Commander T'Pol on Enterprise. After he was finished Captain Adams returned to the bridge with Adam Harper. They came over to Desauma's station first. "This is Ensign Desauma Saberwyn, he's our Chief Science officer," Captain Adams commented to Adam. "What are your duties on this ship?" Adam asked. "My department does astrological and planetery surveys. As well as co-ordinating exobiological studies on all the species we encounter with the medical department," Desauma said in 'matter-of-fact' way. The boy smiled and turned with the Captain to Jack's station.

"I managed to contact Commander T'Pol. She suggested that we shunt some power through the warp reactor,"
"Did she have any idea what might have hit us?" Kirk asked.
"No."
Damn, Kirk thought. It was clear that it was an electromagnetic pulse of some kind but to be able to take down a starship it would have to be big, a giant gun.
What troubled Kirk was the fact that EM pulses had been around for hundreds of years but an Earth Starship was built with new alloys that had become very resilient to sudden electromagnetic changes. The ships hull was designed to keep the harsh vacuum of space from wreaking havoc on the life giving systems inside the ship.
"Ion storms..." Kirk mumbled.
"What was that?" Saberwyn asked.
"I have read a few reports were freighter ships have had the same sort of sudden power loss when hit by a sudden ion storm." Kirk explained as the elevator stopped in Engineering.
"This was no ion storm though, we would have picked up a storm on the sensors." Saberwyn rebutted.
"I know, but ionic energy could be used as a weapon, much like our phase canons. It would just take a lot more power than we are capable of generating to use such a weapon," Kirk said as he continued to walk through the dimly lit engine room, "I hate knowing that we might not be the most advanced race in the galaxy. Especially when we are at war with a race we haven't even seen yet."
"What's the situation?" Kirk asked Jackson.
"We have auxiliary power but we can't say for sure when the engines will be back online." Jackson replied.
"Alright," Kirk said taking a moment to think, "I will take a look at the engines I want you and Ensign Saberwyn to work on getting power back to critical systems, life support and long range communications." Kirk said.

Desauma nodded and moved with Jackson to an open access panel. They worked on life support first. "All these main circuits are completely fried," he commented to Jackson, who nodded. "Hey Andy, I think you may have been right about this weapon," he raised his voice a little as he called out to the chief engineer. He returned to the task at hand. It took a while but he managed to reroute the life support circuits through the auxiliary processors. "Success. We have life support," he reported to Kirk. With in an hour they had restored the sysems. Kirk walked over to a wall companel. "Engineering to bridge," he said into the companel. "Bridge here, go ahead Ensign Kirk," Commander Benzin replied. [Tag: Benzin, Kirk] After Kirk closed the channel Desauma turned to him. "Hey Krik do you want to work on those shield simmulations?" Desauma asked as Kirk finished on the warp reactor.

It had been over an hour since Jack and Adam had been abducted. The crew, Adams included had been working non-stop to try and get power back, with partial success.
Adams was on his back underneath the science station on the bridge, he and several other officers on the bridge were attempting to get key systems online.
He finished making his modifications and opened a channel to sensor control. "Okay, you can try it again."
The people in sensor control did their stuff and some controls lit up on the science station.
"Yes! We did it!" exclaimed Adams, "Good work boys."
As he closed the channel to sensor control, Benzin came over to where Adams was sitting at the science station.
"Do we have sensors back?" Asked Benzin.
"Yes." Said Adams. He worked some controls. "We have them on sensors. They're moving away at Warp 4."
He tapped the comm panel again.
"Engineering, we've got sensors back up here. When am I gonna get my engines and weapons back?"

"Hey Kirk do you want to work on those shield simulations?"
"Yeah just as soon as I get this reaction chamber going again." Kirk said as he passed Saberwyn.
"Engineering, we've got sensors back up here. When am I gonna get my engines and weapons back?"
Of all the, Kirk thought as he quickly made his way over to a COM station, "Just a couple more minutes Captain."
Rushing from the COM station Kirk didn't wait to hear if Adams has anything else to say. He had a engine to get back online and there was nothing that was going to stop him. Standing in front of the warp core Kirk began to slowly introduce the matter and anti-matter into the reaction chamber. All eyes were on the reaction chamber when suddenly bright flashes started to come from the reaction chamber. For most of the engineers it was the first time they had actually seen the annihilation of matter and anti-matter outside the class room environment, for Kirk it was a nervous moment as the slightest sudden change in calculations would lead to the ultimate destruction of the Challenger.
With in a couple of minutes the Challenger's engine room began to hum like it always and engineers started going about their normal repair duties. Kirk found himself sweating bullets, he knew that nobody on the bridge had any idea on the fine line they were walking when the engines went down and Kirk would never tell them.
Kirk knew that the sensors would tell the bridge that the engines were back online but he still needed to report in, "Engineering to Bridge. Engines are back online, and the phase canon's capacitors should be fully charged with in the hour." Closing the COM channel Kirk looked down to Saberwyn and stepped down from them engine platform.
"How about those simulations." Kirk asked.

The call came from engineering that the warp drive was back on line.
"Helm, pursuit course, engage at maximum warp!" ordered Adams.
Challenger was a few hours behind the Orion vessel but they couldn't keep running forever.
"Mr Rickman," said Adams, "prepare the MACOs for a rescue operation."
"Comms," he said to the officer at communications, "Tell Enterprise and Atlantis we may need back up."
