Adams watched the stars out of the front window of the shuttle that would take him to his new assignment. In just moments, the orbital station would come into view and he would get his first glimpse of his new ship, Challenger.
Nine years ago he had been admitted to Starfleet Academy, and nine years ago, he had travelled into space for the first time in over 160 years. Of course, the humans weren't to know that. Sometimes, Adams regretted having to lie to them, but they weren't yet technically advanced enough for him to reveal himself. They would make first contact with the El Aurians one day.
Anyway, he thought of himself as a human now. He had lived on Earth, as a human for 166 years. In a way, he was more human than any of them.
When he had travelled in space the last time, he didn't really care for it, at least, it was nothing special, just a way to get from A to B. But as he had lived with humans, lived with them during 166 years of technical advancement, he had taken up their curiosity, their passion for exploration.
Now he wanted just as much as the humans to know what was out there. Whatever journey they were about to embark upon, he would be a part of it.
In fact, he already had been a part of it. He had served on Enterprise, no less. A ship that was now being heralded as one of the greatest, her crew, legendary. But, he was only a small part of the crew there. Here, he was the Chief Science Officer, and second in command of the vessel, too. It was here that he would make his real mark.
Adams was jerked from his musings as the young Irish ensign piloting the shuttle spoke.
"Shuttlecraft One to Challenger, request permission to dock."
"Shuttlecraft One, you are cleared to dock." Came the reply from the comm.
As they approached, Adams took in the magnificant vessel. He didn't think he had ever seen anything so beautiful.
------------------------
After the docking procedure had finished, Adams had been greeted by the Ensign in charge. After a short conversation, Adams headed to the Bridge.
The door to the lift opened onto the bridge. Adams stepped out of the lift. He took it all in, it looked wonderful.
None of the senior staff were on the bridge, but a young ensign informed Adams that the Captain was in his ready room.
Adams crossed the bridge to the Captain's ready room and pressed the door chime. After a short pause, a voice said, "Come in."
Adams opened the door and entered.
As the door closed, Adams stood to attention and said, "Lieutenant Shawn Adams reporting for duty sir."

Commander Benzin was disappointed. Excitement was what he was seeking on the Challenger. Not a cargo run. He had served aboard the cargo ship, The Bulwark, for a few years, and he shuddered to think that the Challenger could be the next Bulwark. Those many hours he had to stand guard, watching over the "Precious cargo" as the captain called it were boring to say the least. Well, at least this time he wouldn't be the one standing guard. The Commander had been grateful for being called upon to serve as First Officer, but he was looking forward to manning the weapons station as well. The crew were a mystery to him. He had never served with any of them personally, and only once before met the CO briefly when being introduced by Admiral Ivans.
He sighed deeply as he read the briefing, and lifted his head up. He had been in a shuttlepod for a couple of hours and was growing tired of sitting down, waiting. He got up from his seat and approached the pilot.
Benzin: Pilot, how much longer?
Pilot: Well sir, we should be seeing her soon, assuming I read the coordinates right. Ah, there she is!
The shuttlepod slowed down and carefully glided into range of the Challenger. Commander Benzin was quite impressed with the Challenger. He had served on the NX-02, but this one felt special in some way. Somehow he knew he belonged there. He leaned over the flight controls and peered up at the hard-edged yet beautiful vessel.
Benzin: Vat a ship she is...
The pilot opened up a comm channel to the Challenger.
Pilot: Greetings, Challenger. This is Shuttlepod 6 requesting docking.
Challenger: Acknowledged Shuttlepod 6. Shuttlebay doors will be opened shortly.
The pilot turned around to face the commander.
Pilot: Nothing to it sir. I've done this a million times, and it won't take long at all.
Benzin: You may vant to turn the ship a little, pilot.
The pilot turned around in his chair, spotting a large piece of debris heading their way. The pilot quickly took evasive maneuvers and the ship darted away from the object. It was a sharp jolt, which sent the commanders luggage flying off the shelves and onto the floor. The commander nearly lost his balance.
Pilot: Uh...Sorry. Let me help you with that.
Benzin: Just-...Just get me aboard and I'll handle the rest.
The pilot nodded slowly and continued onward. He moved the pod into position and it ascended into the shuttlebay. The doors closed beneath it and the pod finally came to a stop.
Pilot: Well, this is the final destination. Some people will be down here soon to take your luggage to your quarters.
Benzin: Thanks, pilot, but it isn't really necessary.
Commander Benzin stepped out of the pod and took his first steps onto the Challenger. It was very , very busy, with officers running back and forth, making last minute checks and modifications. They were yelling very noisily and using drills and other tools. It reminded him of his childhood, when he used to work at his fathers antique automobile shop. Commander Benzin was going to approach the officers and ask them when they'd be done, but he decided to just let them get on with their business. A short time later, several officers ran in, and approached him and his luggage.
Officer: Greetings sir, welcome to the Challenger. Would you like us to help you with your luggage?
Benzin: I don't think it vill be much of a problem. It shouldn't be too long of a trip.
The Commander picked up his luggage as best he could, and dragged them out of the shuttlebay. The decks were nearly the same as the shuttlebay, but the officers seemed to be finishing up their system checks. He continued to haul his luggage as he tried to remember where on the deck his quarters were.
E-Deck section 3...E-Deck section 3... he repeated over and over again in his head.
Benzin: Ah, here it is.
He walked in, turned the light on, and was relieved to set his luggage down and rest his arms. He didn't have time to look around, though. He had to get to the bridge and report to the CO. He wiped the sweat off of his forehead, and assumed it was the environmental controls that were acting up. Once he rubbed himself off, he exited his quarters and headed straight to the bridge, and he began to look for the captain among all the noise and tech officers.
Hopefully he would have a better working relation ship with Captain Dowding then he did with Captain Hernandez...

This was what Jack had been working for four hard, long years. He had been given his orders to report to the Challenger. Jack knew that thousands of people applied for the jobs, but luckily Jack had gotten a letter of recommendation from another famous Ensign, Ensign Hoshi Sato. Jack had studied at her school four years ago when she was teaching in Brazil. Jack always wanted to join Starfleet and when Hoshi joined once again, Jack made up his mind.
He was now on a shuttle with a couple of junior officers. Like him they were all very excited, and could you not. Challenger was the third in the NX class, the most advance ship yet and commanded by a great captain.
"Have you heard what our mission is yet?" a young crewman asked the group.
"Yeah and its horrible," one of them said.
"How do you know that?" the crewman asked.
"Because my father works at HQ and he told me we were assigned a cargo mission," the same officer said. That brought a unified moan from everyone in the shuttle, but Jack didn't care. He was here and he would take full advantage of getting to know the ship, before she was put to a real test.
"We are closing on the space orbital," the pilot said slowing the shuttle down. Everyone on the shuttle made a V-line for a window to get a glimpse of Challenger. Luckily for Jack he didn't have to move, because he was already at the window. Jack couldn't help but let out a slight gasp as he saw the ship. She was magnificent, powerful, fast, and most important his. Just as he had done, everyone else awed and cheered as they saw Challenger.
"Gentleman and ladies, welcome to the NX-03 Challenger." At that announcement everyone cheered and hollered at the top of their lungs. Jack thought that this was going to be a rowdy bunch. In a matter of minutes the shuttle docked at the station and let them out. Everyone except Jack headed to wards the recreational area, Jack quickly headed to wards the Challenger so he could get an upper hand on his comm station. He would need to become intimately involved with his station and this was the best time to do that.
Jack headed towards the bridge quickly, but not so fast that he couldnt' admire the inside of the Challenger. Once he made it to the turbolift, he started to panic a little. This was it Jack thought as soon as he hit the bridge, he would offically start his career.
Jack heard a little clunk to signify that the turbolift had stopped. Jack slowly stepped into the bridge and looked around. He quickly noticed the Captain and headed his way.
"Ensign Jack Logan, Communications officer reports in for duty," Jack said realizing that his voice had become highly pitched.

Andrew Kirk had shown up hours before any of the other crew members started to show up. The pilot asked him why he had shown up so early, Andrew replied, "What kind of engineer would I be if I showed up last?"
Kirk noticed it had begun to be very crowded in engineering as crewmen and officers alike had started to file in and begin checking all the various systems on the ship. Kirk had felt honored that he was selected out of the many applicants to head up the engineering department on the new ship.
A crewman happened to pass by Kirk, he talked about how the Captain was now aboard the ship. I am going to kill that crewman when I see him next, Kirk thought as he turned back to his duties.
"Sir, I wanted to inform you the Captain is on board."
Kirk turned around to find the crewman he had asked earlier to inform him instantly when the Captain was on board.
"How long has he been on board?" Kirk asked turning back to finish what he was doing.
"Uh, awhile sir." The crewman replied.
"Thank you crewman." Kirk said still working.
As the crewman walked away Kirk looked up and watched the man leave. "I asked for one thing, one simple thing" Kirk mumbled to himself as he finished working on the keyboard in front of him.
Kirk placed his tools down in his old red tool box he had gotten from his grand father several years ago. The old man loved working on cars and taught Andrew everything he knew about basic mechanical repair. Picking up a single red rag from his tool box Kirk tried to clean his hands as he made his way to the lift to take him to Deck A.
As Kirk made his way to see the Captain he looked around the ship for any possible problems, listened for any cracks, creeks, sounds of running water where it should not be, and he finally placed his ear on the wall to listen to the hum of the power supply runners. Kirk smiled as he heard the hypnotic hum of power coursing through the ship.
Finally making his way to the bridge he found the Captain and another officer already talking. Kirk wanted to make this quick so he could get back to finishing up his check list before the ship departed.
"Sorry to interrupt, my name is Andrew Kirk and I am the Chief Engineer." Kirk said whipping his hands one last time with a smile before he extended his hand towards Captain Dowding.

0200 the clock read. Marshall rolled over again, trying to catch some last minute sleep. It wasn't going to happen. Day 1 of the Challenger mission had started 2 hours ago, Marshall had received a sketchy 3 hours of sleep and he was starting to feel it, a pounding headache began to throb just at the front of his head. He could tell it was going to get worse over the day.
He rolled over yet again, 0201.
"This is ridiculous." He muttered as he sat up in bed slowly got up.
He pulled on a shirt and then shuffled his way over to the small bathroom that had served him for the last week or so while Challenger had been under going last minute checks. He took a long, relaxing shower and then managed to drink half a cup of coffee before realising he was just putting off his arrival on Challenger.
He had no idea why he was this nervous, he had served on an NX class before and had been on Challenger many times since his return to Earth. There was just something different this time, something a whole lot different. This time he was repsonsible for all those lives. Today he would take that centre chair and order the Challenger out of dock and the lives of every single crewman would be on his shoulders.
"Stop it." He muttered to himself. "You'll do fine." He added as he pulled on the jumpsuit which would now serve as his uniform. The top of the sleeve proudly showed the Challenger Badge and Marshall smiled. He picked up his communicator and put it safely in his chest pocket.
Straightening his uniform one last time he headed out the door of his temporary quarters with bags he had packed days before. He slowly walked to the shuttle hanger that resided no more than a 5 minute walk away from his quarters. He had specifically asked to be this close so he could get to Challenger whenever he wanted... or needed.
When he arrived at the hanger a drowsy crewman greeted him and look shocked when Marshall said he wanted to get to Challenger now.
"It's 0300 Sir."
"I am well of that thank you Crewman. I'll pick up my bags you just prep the pod." He replied.
Marshall didn't have that many belongings, he had learnt that being attached to too many material posessions often resulted in loss of some description. He had the bare essentials. A photo of his immediate family, uniforms, civi's and the Bible which he hadn't read in over 5 years but for some reason still carried it with him wherever he went.
"The Pod is ready for departure Sir." The crewman said, leaning out of the craft.
Marshall boarded and stowed his bag away in one of the overhead compartments.
"Challenger is aware that we are on our way Sir."
"Thank you Crewman, when you are ready." Dowding replied.
The officer turned round and began the start up procedure. Soon the shuttle had launched into the Earth's atmosphere and the nerves doubled with every inch covered. Challenger was getting closer, and so was that responsibility.
The pod gracefully exited the Earth's atmosphere and continued on its course to Challenger and in a matter of minutes they had arrived and the familiar grapplers extended from the hanger bay to bring the pod into dock.
The doors to the pod hissed open and Marshall stepped onto the dimly lit deck. There was only one officer in sight but he had expected no different.
"May I take your bags Sir?" The officer asked.
"That won't be necessary thank you Ensign." He replied. "I will head straight to the Bridge and leave my luggage in my Ready Room."
The Ensign nodded and began to lead the way to the Bridge. Marshall knew perfectly well where he was going but he thought it best to allow the Ensign to think he was doing something useful, it was 3 in the morning and the poor guy had probably been on duty since the early evening of the day before.
Marshall stepped onto the Bridge and was shocked to see a slightly different layout. One new console that had not been on the NX-02 sat next to science and on further investigation it showed to be a station that was linked directly to Sickbay.
"Neat..." He whispered.
The Ensign left the Bridge leaving Marshall to his thoughts.
There was the chair, he stood there looking at it until he managed to make himself sit down.
"Oh.." He said, realising that this small action symbolised the start of a whole new chapter in his life.
After a while he stood to his feet and went to his Ready Room where he left his small bag of posessions on the desk before returning to the quiet and empty Bridge.
He slowly walked about the module.
"Morning Gal." He said, all to aware that if someone walked in now they would think him crazy. "I'm your Captain but you can call me Marshall. This is going to be good." He said.
After he had walked around the entire Bridge he sat down in the centre chair and picked up a padd that the Ensign had left him, it was a duty roster. There were still a number of positions yet to be filled but she was able to fly. Marshall recognised none of the names. It was certainly going to be interesting. He wondered how the crew would respond to their first mission...
Slowly as the morning dragged on Tech officers began to flood the Bridge, completing last minute checks and performance runs. Marshall began to feel extremely chlostrophobic and decided to return to the sanctuary of his Ready Room but no sooner than he had sat down at his desk the door chime sounded.
"Come in." He said loudly.
The doors hissed open and there stood a fresh uniformed Lt.
"Lieutenant Shawn Adams reporting for duty sir."
Marshall stood to his feet and smiled, offering his hand.
"A pleasure to meet you Lt. How do you like the look of Challenger then?"
<TAG Adams>
"Indeed, well I suppose we should return to the Bridge. the rest of the crew should be arriving soon."
The two officers stepped out onto the Bridge and into the chaos.
"You got my spanner!" Someone yelled accross Dowding's path and then flushed when he realised who he had yelled over.
Marshall laughed and walked around the Bridge again, Mr. Adams appeared to have dissapeared in the throng of people.
Just as Marshall managed to force his way past the turbolift an officer practically bounded out.
"Ensign Jack Logan, Communications officer reports in for duty."
"Morning Ensign." Marshall said supressing a smile at the eagerness and pitch of the young Officer.
"How are you finding Challenger so far? I hope you have found everything you need?"
<TAG Logan>
Marshall smiled and was about to respond when another officer approached.
"Sorry to interrupt, my name is Andrew Kirk and I am the Chief Engineer."
"No problem Mr. Kirk. I hope you're keeping my ship in tip-top condition." He said with a smile.
<TAG Kirk>
"I'm sure that is the case Ensign. Now if you could excuse me gentlemen, I believe I have just spotted my XO."
The two Ensigns allowed Marshall to pass and he slowly managed to walk through the crowd of people to reach his flustered looking XO.
"Commander Benzin?" He enquired, tapping the officer on the shoulder. "I am Captain Dowding."

"Of course sir. I just wanted to check in with you and inform you that everything is working as it is supposed to." Kirk replied.
I'm sure that is the case Ensign. Now if you could excuse me gentlemen, I believe I have just spotted my XO."
Kirk stepped aside to let his Captain move past himself and the other Ensign. He had not gotten the chance that he needed to come down to engineering and do his personal inspection of the ship and sign the paper work before the could head out. He's a Captain, he should know, Kirk thought to himself, He's a Captain and I am not going to forgot to do my duty.
"Sorry, I did not mean to be rude," Kirk said extending out his hand to the fellow Ensign, "Ensign Andrew Kirk."

Marshall stood to his feet and smiled, offering his hand.
"A pleasure to meet you Lt. How do you like the look of Challenger then?"
"She's a beautiful ship sir. I can't wait to begin. Lots of the crew seem disappointed that we'll be delivering cargo for our first mission, but it should be a good opportunity to get to know everything. Besides, Enterprise's first mission was a cargo mission of sorts." said Adams.
"I suppose so." chuckled Dowding.
Adams walked along the room slightly and noticed something else that Challenger had in common with Enterprise. On the wall of the ready room, there was a picture of the previous ships to bear the name Challenger. There was an old Earth sea vessel and a space shuttle.
"That was the one that exploded..." said Adams.
"Yes, in 1985, I believe." replied Dowding.
"1986 actually." said Adams, and then thinking it had sounded a bit rude, added, "Sir." He remembered seeing the explosion on television.
"We'll live up to the name." said Adams.
Captain Dowding smiled, "I'm sure we will Lieutenant."
Dowding then made for the door and said, "Indeed, well I suppose we should return to the Bridge. the rest of the crew should be arriving soon."
As they stepped out onto the bridge, there was a commotion and Shawn was brushed to one side by a number of busy crew members.
He made his way over to the science station and sat down. It felt wonderful.

The MACO unit, unlike the swashbuckling Starfleet personnel, were not on the small but comfortable shuttlepods. Rickman sat with his unit in a small passenger section on a ship to surface cargo transport carrying some small but possibly valuable cargo to the ship. What the cargo was he neither knew nor cared. Next to him was his second in command, Lt John Atkins. Atkins was dark haired and shorter than Rickman, but he was stockier. Although he was now back in good health, not a year before he had been in the army hospital for the third time after being shot in India under Rickman's command. In many ways he was Rickman's lucky charm; weapons always seemed to aim at him instead. Opposite the two was the only other one who had served with Rickman; Sergeant Eric Smith. Smith had been a private in the political intervention in China and when Rickman and Atkins had gone to India, he had served elsewhere. Now he was a sergeant and the three were catching up on old times. 'They had me stationed in Brazil for months with a peacekeeping unit. We spent most the time in barracks whilst the action went on in Chile. I dunno what they expected, but they didn't get it' Smith said 'Better bored in Brazil than incapcitated in India!' exclaimed Atkins, to a chorus of groans from the other two 'You knew the risks when you signed up, John' Rickman said 'Easy for you to say, you haven't been shot once. Not once! How does someone manage that without paying the enemy not to shoot him?' 'It's called being careful' 'It's called being lucky!'
The convsersation went on as the ship performed the space ship equivalent of waddling up to the side of the Challenger and the docking port. After the tedious process of connecting the tubes and whatever the hell else needed doing that seemed to take forever, the door opened. 'Carry on, sergeant' Rickman ordered 'Maaarines! Up!' barked the sergeant in that way that is crucial for all sergeants to manage The Marines stood. Rickman and Atkins left the sergeant to see the Marines to their billets on the ship. There were 14 in all including the sergeant, stationed in shared rooms. Ahh, the privileges of rank, Rickman mused as he and the Lieutenant left the transport. The lieutenant went to their quarters and Rickman headed for the bridge.
He soon found the captain, the bridge wasn't big. 'Captain Rickman reporting in with a squad of Marines' He presented the ship's captain with a list of the Marine squad; three fire teams, a corporal, a sergeant, Lt Atkins and himself. Technically that was more than a squad should have, but the change of environment called for a slightly larger chain of command. After all, there was no guarantee all of them, especially Atkins, would survive intact.

I'm sure there has been many improvements in ship systems and I am eager to see what dis ship is capable of. So, I think I'fe been rambling on fur enough, and time is short. How can I be of service, sir?" Commander Benzin said.
Marshall smiled at his new FO. He could tell this was the kind of person he could relate to. Keen and eager, and obviously a dedicated officer.
"Well, you are right Commander. Challenger is very nearly ready to depart. There are just a few things that I must attend to before we depart but I assure you, we will be leaving on time." He said with another smile. "In regards to what you can do." He added motioning to the centre chair. "Why don't you take the Bridge while I give this ship one final essential areas tour?"
<TAG Benzin>
"You have the Bridge Commander." Marshall said as he headed for the turbolift.
The mass of technicians had slowly thinned out, only a few now remained and Marshall was pleased to see his ship glow in the way only the CO can see.
Before he left the Bridge an officer in a MACO uniform approached him. Now Marshall remembered, Starfleet had assigned a great deal of the MACO officers to Challenger, Marshall assumed it was because of the recent issues Starfleet had with a number of species including the Xindi, the Romulans and the Klingons.
"Captain Rickman reporting in with a squad of Marines." The officer said.
Marshall frowned at the use of Captain and then realised they were MACO ranks. That would take some getting used to. The officer also gave Marshall a list of the Marine Squadrons before the Captain could offer his welcoming handshake.
"Greetings Captain Rickman." Marshall said after briefly looking over the list... there sure was a lot... "I am Captain Marshall Dowding. It is a pleasure to meet you and serve with you." He said now offering his hand. "I assume you have found everything you need?"
<TAG Rickman>
"Very good Captain. Well if you could excuse me, I have one last tour of the ship to make. Good to meet you Rickman." Marshall said before leaving the Bridge via the only Turbolift.
He first destination was Sickbay, followed shortly by the Armoury, then Engineering then back to the Bridge for the departure ceremony. Marshall shuddered...
"And then space..." He muttered.
He soon arrived at Sickbay and was greeted by a friendly looking Nurse who was not who Marshall was expecting. The Nurse seemed to pick up on his confusion.
"I am Nurse King." She said. "I am aware you were probably expecting Dr. Mathews but he was unable to make it. There is a full report I believe, somewhere..."
"That is fine Nurse. It is good to meet you. Well it certainly looks like you have everything in order here. Keep up the good work Miss King."
"Thank you Captain, I'm sure I will."
Marshall once again continued on his way after checking out a few of the systems in Sickbay. His next destination was the Armoury, which he was most excited about. With all the upgrades, Challenger could blast her way through anything... in Marshall's opinion anyway...
"Captain on Deck!" A young officer yelled as Marshall walked into the Armoury.
He smiled. "Thank you Ensign but that is quite uneccesary. I just came down to take a look around and make sure everything is ok."
A few other officers joined the Captain and the Ensign and soon a full-blown discussion occurred. Marshall was thoroughly enjoying himself until he realised he had spent the better part of half an hour chatting to the enthusiastic new officers.
"Well thaank you very much gentlemen, but I really must be off. Perhaps we can continue this talk over breakfast sometime. I am very keen to understand how Starfleet has managed to increase the torpedo's yeild."
Ten minutes later and Marshall strolled into Engineering, which was most definately the busiest place he had been too yet. There were officers bustling about everywhere but he could not see his new CEO anywhere.
After a short talk with the Assistant CEO and the official activation of the Warp core Marshall headed back to the Bridge. A grin fixed to his face.
As he walked onto the Bridge everyone stood to attention and Marshall fixed his gaze onto the viewscreen. There was Admiral Clark with a glass of Champagne in his hand, smiling.
"Captain Dowding. I would like to raise a toast, to you, your new ship and fine new crew. May she soar the stars in safety and explore strange new worlds. Seeking out all different varieties of new life along with different cultures and civilisations." Clark smiled, and raised his glass. Marshall was given a glass by Commander Benzin who then took the Tactical station allowing Marshall to take the centre position. "To Challenger." Clark added.
"To Challenger!" The Bridge roared.
"God speed." Clark said before one last swig of the champagne and then the screen flickered off.
"Ok guys, drink up." Marshall said, taking his seat. "Let's get this gal moving.
A murmur of replies came as the chink of glasses were handed to a warrant officer who left the Bridge.
"All stations report." Marshall said, adjusting himself to a more comfortable position.
<TAG All Stations>
Marshall allowed a silence to fill the Bridge. This was a great day.
"Open a channel to all decks." He said.
"Aye Sir." Logan replied. "Channel open."
"Helm." Marshall started. "Take us out." He paused. "1/4 impulse until we clear the docking facility and then take us to Warp 2, destination Vulcan."
"Gladly Sir." Came the response from helm.
"All decks, let the mission begin."

"All stations report." Captain Dowding ordered.
Adams let Benzin give his report first as he was superior in rank to him.
<tag Benzin>
Next in line, Adams said, "Science is ready sir. The lateral sensor array is slightly out of alignment. Nothing to be too worried about, but if we get a chance, I'd like to perform some tests and reconfigurations."
The other officers gave their reports then Dowding said, "Take us out." He paused, "1/4 impulse until we clear the docking facility and then take us to Warp 2, destination Vulcan."
"Gladly Sir." Came the response from helm.
"All decks, let the mission begin." announced Dowding, and Shawn, along with the other officers on the bridge burst into applause. He was sure that there was much applause and cheering on the other decks, if they had been able to hear it.
This was it.

"All stations report." Captain Dowding ordered. Jack quickly got all the information that he would need to tell the Captain. Commander Benzin and Lt. Adams went first, much to Jack's relief.
"Captain operations and communication are at 100%," Jack said realizing that their was no reason to log down the answer.
"Take us out." He paused, "1/4 impulse until we clear the docking facility and then take us to Warp 2, destination Vulcan."
"Gladly Sir." Came the response from helm.
"All decks, let the mission begin." announced Dowding, and without realizing Jack started to clap, which was quickly followed by everyon esle. Right now nothing mattered to Jack except this moment, they were starting thier maiden voyage and he was in the middle of it.

The captain had requested that all departments report. Commander Benzin was only to happy to comply. He sat down at the tac station and began to look through the photonic torpedo inventory and made sure that phase cannons were fully operational and he checked to make sure the grappler was functioning without fault. Everything was good to go. Hull polarization was at the ready...incase they needed it.
Benzin: Tactical systems functioning perfectly, sir. Now if only ve could try for a test shot. But...ja, dis is only a cargo mission, after all.
Benzin sighed softly in disappointment, and he could tell that some of the others shared his disappointment. The young officers however, treated the mission as if it were their moment of total bliss. The commander was happy, nonetheless. It was an honor to be sitting at the tactical station, and serving the vessel as second in command.

Andrew had made his way back down to Engineering after introducing himself to the Captain. AS he walked back into Engineering he found it to be much too over crowded and began kicking reporters and dock workers out.
"Sir, we have a small wiring problem in one of the sub computer processors." Crewman Nickson, Kirk's Assistant Chief Engineer, reported.
"Alright I will take a look at it. Nicks, come get me when the Captain gets here to take turn on the engines."
"Of course sir." Nickson replied.
30+ minutes later
"What the hell?" Kirk said outloud as the warp engines back online for the first time. Kirk crawled quickly down the maintance shaft to the exit, looking down he noticed somebody had taken his ladder and he couldn't get down.
"Get me a ladder, now!" Kirk yelled to the nearest engineer.
With in seconds Kirk was back down from the maintance shaft and raced towards the crowd. It was not a very good sign for a Cheif Engineer to be missing during first start up of the engines. As he approached the crowd he saw the Captain talking with a few reporters before leaving engineering for the bridge.
"You and I need to have words." Kirk said to Nickson.
Sometime later Kirk heard the com system open up and Captain Dowding's voice came through loud and clear.
"All stations report."
Kirk listened as the other Senior Officer's stations reported in. After all the other stations reported in Kirk pushed the com button at his station in engineering and said, "Engines are running perfectly Captain."
"Take us out." He paused, "1/4 impulse until we clear the docking facility and then take us to Warp 2, destination Vulcan."
"Gladly Sir." Came the response from helm.
"All decks, let the mission begin."
You know, there should really be an Engineering station on the bridge, Kirk thought to himself.

'Greetings Captain Rickman.' Marshall said 'I am Captain Marshall Dowding. It is a pleasure to meet you and serve with you." He said now offering his hand. "I assume you have found everything you need?'
Rickman shook Dowding's hand in that 'I'm not going to crush your hand but I could' way that seems obligatory for all military personnel.
'My sergeant is seeing my men to their billets and my lieutenant will check the ship's layout once he's unpacked in his quarters. So far everything seems to be in order, thank you Captain'
'Very good Captain. Well if you could excuse me, I have one last tour of the ship to make. Good to meet you Rickman.'
In all honesty, Rickman wasn't overenamoured with the mission to come. Yes, there was always scope for attack but without knowing what the cargo was, Rickman couldn't judge. Either way, he was stuck now with the only really professional fighting force on a small ship going to the middle of nowhere full of rather new officers.
Eventually the captain was back on the bridge and they shared a toast to the new ship. 'All stations report.', Marshall ordered
Rickman wasn't sure if this applied to him, but he replied nonetheless. 'MACO squad ready to go'

Challenger cut through space like a knife, the upgraded deflector technology certainly doing its job.
Challenger had departed 28 minutes ago, leaving approximately 2 days, 23 hours and 32 minutes until they arrived at Vulcan.
There was very little the crew could do at this time except run checks and make sure the ship was running effectively. On the return to Earth several weapons tests had been planned as well as a test of how fast the shuttle pods could be crewed and launched. However, Marshall had decided to not tell the crew this yet...
Let it be a surprise.He thought.
He rose to his feet and approached the Tactical station where his XO sat.
"Commander Benzin, may I have a moment?"
<TAG Benzin>
"Thank you Commander, could we perhaps step into my Ready Room?"
<TAG Benzin>
"Lieutenant Adams, you have the Bridge." Marshall said as he entered the Ready Room just off the bridge, followed closely by Benzin.
"Please take a seat Commander." Marshall said motioning to one of the empty seats. "Can I get you anything to drink?"
<TAG Benzin>
Marshall smiled and accessed the replicator, getting his Cappucino and the beverage Benzin had asked for. He passed the standard issue mug to his XO and then sat down, taking a sip of his steaming coffee before speaking.
"As you are aware Commander, this mission has the potential to be very boring." He said with a wry smile. "I suggest we liven things up a little. Perhaps the possibilty of a few surprise battle-prep scenarios or an intruder alert situation?"
<TAG Benzin>
"Sounds excellent Commander, I assume I can leave this in your capable hands? Perhaps schedule one for within the next two hours. Obviously keep this perfectly quiet until then."
<TAG Benzin>
"Very good Commander. Now tell me a little about yourself. I have read your service record but I feel you can learn so much more from the person themselves."
<TAG Benzin>
Marshall listened itently to his XO. A good command relationship required these sort of conversations. Marshall hoped that the journey to Vulcan would provide an oppurtunity to get to know his senior staff lot better.
Benzin stopped talking, obviously deciding that any more of his life story would bore his Captain. This was far from the case, Marshall was a people person and greatly enjoyed hearing the past behind the people.
He stood to his feet and so did Benzin. "Well, thank you very much for your company Commander. We must share breakfast sometime but right now I suggest we return to the Bridge."
Both officers exited the Ready Room to be greeted by Mr. Adams standing up as Benzin took his position.
"I trust you took care of my ship Lieutenant?" Marshall said jokingly, taking the centre chair.
<TAG Adams>
"Very good Lieutenant. Could I possibly get a review of the science department as soon as possible Lieutenant? And how is that lateral sensor array looking?"
<TAG Adams>
"Thank you Lieutenant. There's no hurry on that report."
Adams returned to his console and Marshall opened a comm link to Engineering throught the use of the controls on the arm of his chair.
"Engineering, how's everything down there? Any problems with the core?" Marshall asked, this was after all their maidon voyage, a perfect time for things to be tested and re-tested.
<TAG Kirk>
"Very good Ensign. Keep me posted every three hours on the engines performance. Dowding out." He closed the comm and fixed his attention to the Cargo manifest a warrant officer had just given him.
Nothing too exciting. A casket of 2005 Chardonay from France, a crate of belgian chocolates, a shipment of phaser rifles and a small box of the latest fashions from New York. An odd collection, but Marshall assumed that the majority of the cargo was for the Ambassadors to Vulcan from Earth.
2 days, 22 hours and 47 minutes.

Commander Benzin was busy glazing over his console when he heard the captain speak to him.
Benzin: Hm? Oh, yes of course sir.
Benzin: Certainly sir.
Benzin: Hmm. I'll just have some black coffee, if you have that.
The captain nodded and poured him a cup of coffee.
Benzin: Much appreciated sir.
The commander looked up, excited, and then he tried to contain himself.
Benzin: That sounds like an excellent idea, sir. I'll come up vit something. It should whip everyone into shape.
Benzin: Yes sir, it shouldn't be a problem. Er...Although, Captain Rickman... Should he be told about these drills? I'm just saying, since I've heard stories of conflicts between MACOs and Starfleet officers. Malcolm Reed and MACO Major Hayes, for example. Or is this just a drill for the Starfleet officers?
<tag Dowding>
Benzin: Well sir...I was born in Nuremberg in Deutchland, or Germany if you prefer. I uh... I grew up in a good household, in a section of a village that kept to tradition and the old way of life. We relied more on human touch then on technology. I don't have any siblings, which did get rather lonely at times. My parents were hard working intelligent people. My mother vas a farmer/gardener. She vas a fantastic landscaper. These days she has gotten older and doesn't work as much as she used to. From time to time she works on her garden. My father was a mechanic, and that vas his major line of work. He repaired small crafts for a while, but he grew bored vith it, and one day when he was walking near a lone forest he found an antique car, a 2002 Mercedes Benz, and he took on the challenge of repairing the car. It became a sort of hobby, until people heard of his work. People from all over would take their antique cars to him, and he fell into that line of work. He still works on them, but not as much as he used to.
I went to school for a normal education, and met my former flame, which was a serious relationship, Jennifer a few years later. She vas a fantastic woman, perfect for me. But then we went our separate ways when it came to moving on vit life. She went off to uni to study psychology, and I ended up in Bundeswehr, or the military as you would call it. And that's pretty much my life in a nut schell. Oh, and I also enjoy reading Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, poetry writer. And listening to 20th-21st century German rock music. Ahem. I'm sorry, seems I got carried away.
Benzin stood and smiled and followed his captain onto the bridge.
"Well, the captain of this ship certainly is a breath of fresh air, compared with my former CO's." Benzin thought.

Engineering, how's everything down there? Any problems with the core?" Marshall asked, this was after all their maiden voyage, a perfect time for things to be tested and re-tested.
"Things are looking good down here Captain," Kirk said looking over his instruments, "Right now the core is stable and it looks to remain that way. The main read outs from the core indicate a healthy reaction with in the core."
"Very good Ensign. Keep me posted every three hours on the engines performance. Dowding out."
"Of Course sir." Kirk said just before Captain Dowding closed the channel.
Looking over the read outs again Kirk noticed a slight 3% drop in total power output but with in seconds the 3% drop had jumped back to normal specs.
Thats not normal, Kirk thought to himself.
"Nicks, I want you to run a quick diagnostic on the Warp Core. I just saw a 3% drop in power output."
"But that is with in acceptable tolerances sir." Nixon replied.
Kirk was half way to the main computer station next to the core when he turned around to face his assistant engineer, "Nix, I would like it if you would please just do as I ask. 3% is acceptable, but I want to know why it suddenly dropped and then came back. I never want anything to happen in my engine room that I cannot explain to the Captain. Understood?"
"Yes sir." Crewman Nixon said sulking.
Kirk shook his head as he watched Nixon walk to the main diagnostics station in engineering. I should have chosen another person to be my assistant, Kirk thought getting in front of the console connected to the warp core.
Pushing the com button Kirk opened a channel to the Operations station on the bridge, "This is Ensign Kirk down in Engineering, are you guys running any heavy internal or external scans at the moment?"

Things got underway as soon as the Captain and first officer went into the Captain's ready room, which Jack was very pleased about. He wanted to get to work and this was the best time to do it. Jack once again looked over his station and decided that it was time that the ran a comprehensive internal analysis of most major systems. Jack just pushed a couple of button's and the scans started shortly there after.
"This is Ensign Kirk down in Engineering, are you guys running any heavy internal or external scans at the moment?" Jack was running the scans, but made sure that nothing interfered with egineering, something his father had always told him. Never mess with an engineers engine.
"Yes ensign, we are running internal scans, but not on engineering," Jack responded hoping that his scand hadn't caused a major problem.
"If you want I will stop scanning the ship until you discover the root of your problem?" Jack offered the ensign at the end of the comm.

No, thats fine. Go ahead and continue the scan, I will keep close watch on the power levels down here. Do me a favor and keep an eye on them up there and see if you spot anything unusual. Kirk out."
<Tag Ensign Jack Logan>
Kirk scratched his head and began to look at the numbers again as he watched the numbers continue to ossolate from 98% to 95%. Kirk wanted to report this issue to the Captain, but as Nixon said it was with in specs and it would be a waste of the Captain's time to report a problem he could not yet identify.

"Lieutenant Adams, you have the Bridge." Marshall said as he entered the Ready Room just off the bridge, followed closely by Benzin.
Adams got up from the science station which was taken by a young female ensign. He had been looking forward to this, the captain's chair. Of course, he was third in command of the ship and was hoping to get some action in the centre chair over the next few years, but he had never sat in one before.
He walked over to the chair, and sat down. He rested his arms on the arms of the chair and crossed his legs. He savoured the moment. He was at the centre of the ship, in command, and the chair was quite comfortable too.
After about ten minutes in the chair, the novelty had worn off a little. It would have been more interesting if a few hostile aliens had been firing at them, but there was plenty of time for that later.
He got up from the chair and got a padd from the science station that contained a departmental report he had been working on. He went back to the chair and worked on it.
About half an hour later, the Captain and Commander Benzin emerged from the ready room. Adams stood up and greeted the two officers.
"I trust you took care of my ship Lieutenant?" Marshall said jokingly, taking the centre chair.
"We ran into a couple of Klingon battleships and there was a minor hostage situation, but nothing worth disturbing you for sir." said Adams winking at the Captain.
"Very good Lieutenant. Could I possibly get a review of the science department as soon as possible Lieutenant? And how is that lateral sensor array looking?"
Adams was glad he decided to work on that report, "Actually sir, I just finished the report."
He handed it to Dowding who looked mildly impressed.
"And I suppose you've got the sensors running at 200% efficiency?" joked Dowding.
"Not quite sir," Adams chuckled, "but I've got people running tests on the array. We should be able to recalibrate in an hour or two.

Marshall sat in the centre chair, just thinking. He wondered when Benzin would begin the tactical scenarios, he had allowed the Marines to be informed on a matter of principle. They were there to protect the ship just at much as the Starfleet Officers were.
It had been two hours since Marshall was in the Ready Room with Benzin and this time had allowed the CO of Challenger to read over the crew personnel files. She was yet to be fully staffed but the crew she did have was the best around, better than that of Columbia or even Enterprise Marshall would have wagered... if he were a betting man.
Marshall looked over to Benzin and raised an eyebrow, in a non-imposing kind of way. As if to say, "When you are ready Commander."
Benzin opened his mouth to speak but was stopped as his console flashed.
"A Vulcan Cruiser is approaching at Warp 4 from Vulcan." He said.
Marshall stood to his feet. Starfleet hadn't said anything about an escort. He turned to comms.
"Get me a link Mr. Logan." Marshall said.
<TAG Logan>
The screen flickered on and a stern looking Vulcan appeared on the screen.
"I am Commander T'Omar of the Vulcan Military Vessel, Kisari. We have been sent by the High Command to guide you the rest of the way to Vulcan."
Marshall smiled. "It is a pleasure to meet you Commander T'Omar, I am Captain Marshall Dowding of Challenger."
"I know who you are Captain, we will rendevouz at these co-ordinates and your cargo shall be transported aboard the Kisari, we will then escort you to Vulcan for the rest of your shakedown cruise. Kisari out." The screen flickered for a moment and the image of T'Omar was replaced by flashing stars."
"We have received the co-ordinates Captain." Logan said.
Marshall sighed. "How odd..." He muttered. "Helm alter course and drop out of warp when we arrive."
2 days, 20 hours and 19 minutes.

"We are dropping out of Warp Captain." Came the helmsmans voice. Marshall stood to his feet and the viewscreen flickered to an image of the Vulcan vessel. "Open a channel to the Kisari." He said to Logan. The screen flickered once again and there was T'Omar, looking like he hadn't moved since they last spoke. "Yes Captain?" He said. "Why were did we need to rendevouz Commander?" Marshall asked. "Could we have not continued on our way to Vulcan?" He asked. "Negative. You are now to transport your Cargo to the Kisari." "Now wait a minute..." Dowding started. Now more than a little confused. "I have the official documents here Captain. I will send them to your communications officer." Seconds later Logan's console flashed and then a few minutes after that he nodded. "It's all here Sir." He said. Marshall sighed. "Very well Commander. We will transport the Cargo over within the hour. Challenger out." The screen flickered off and Marshall sat down. "Any ideas as to what is going on here?" He asked, addressing no one in particular. <TAG Everyone> Marshall sighed again and stood to his feet. Let's get that Cargo sent over then. 1.2 Hours later "Transport succesful." Benzin said from his station. "The Kisari is haling Sir." Logan said. "On screen." Marshall replied. "Let us begin the journey to Vulcan." Was all he said before the screen returned to the image of stars and the T'Omar jumping to warp. Challenger followed seconds later and was soon crusing at a smilar speed. "Captain!" Adams yelled. "I am reading an extremely high energy build up on the Kisari, I have no idea..." However Adams did not get to finish his sentence as a shockwave hit Challenger, the ship rocked violently and the lights flickered out. Marshall was thrown to the floor, as were several other crew members and the vessel juddered to a shakey halt. Dowding stood quickly to his feet. "What the hell just happened?!" He asked, yelling over the din of fire extinguishers being used. "The Kisari!" Benzin excalimed. "She exploded." Marshall spun round to face his XO, shock showing on his face. 2 Days, 17 hours and 34 minutes

The screen flickered off and Marshall sat down. "Any ideas as to what is going on here?" He asked, addressing no one in particular.
Adams looked up at the Captain. "I'd be wary sir; T'Omar said that the High Command sent them, but the High Command was abolished earlier this year. May just be a case of mis-speaking, but in a Vulcan, I'm not so sure. Who knows, maybe they could have fake the orders, they're certainly resourceful."
Marshall sighed again and stood to his feet. Let's get that Cargo sent over then.
About an hour later, Benzin annonced that the cargo had been transported successfully. Shawn had been running intensive scans of the Kisari for that time but still hadn't been able to come up with anything.
The Kisari hailed and confirmed the cargo receipt. As she went to warp, Challenger followed moments later.
A couple of minutes after the jump to warp, Adams' console made a loud and nasty beeping noise. It was one of the computer's attention attracting beeps, used for urgency. Adams read the data.
"Captain!" Adams yelled. "I am reading an extremely high energy build up on the Kisari, I have no idea..."
But that was all he got out as a bright explosion erupted onto the viewscreen which had, milliseconds earlier, been displaying an image of the Kisari.
The ship shook violently and Adams' head jumped forward and hit is console. He felt dizzy for a few seconds and for a moment thought of the old seat belt protection devices that had been used in Earth vehicles decades earlier and briefly wondered why starships weren't equipped with them.
There were fires at the back of the bridge and a crewmen lay on the floor, his head bloodied, being attended to by one of his shipmates.
Dowding stood quickly to his feet. "What the hell just happened?!" He asked, yelling over the din of fire extinguishers being used.
"The Kisari!" Benzin excalimed. "She exploded."
As Dowding spun round to face his First Officer, Adams looked down at his console and saw that Benzin was right.
"No survivors sir." said Adams in a tone that conveyed all the shock on Dowding's face.
