(OOC: Everyone seemed to have reached a good pause point in the last thread so I thought I'd take the opportunity to put up the next mission thread. Please continue right from where you left off as soon as you like. Also, I'd just like to thank everyone for the superb effort and enthusiasm you've all been putting in lately. Keep it up.)
[Main Bridge: Shortly following the new members' medical exams]
Savot sat on the bridge continuing the full systems' diagnostics after the two new Ensign's left to meet with Dr. Chavet. Although Savot had already intended to run a maximum scrutiny diagnostic on all of the El Salvador's systems including tactical, it was good to know Ensign Ingersoll's thinking was along his own under the circumstances, and that both of the Ensigns seemed to digest the ship's recent situation quickly and immediately dive in with insightful suggestions rather than become overwhelmed. He'd authorized Ingersoll's intended security drills without hesitation then let them go tend to their business with the doctor.
Life support was the first system to undergo diagnostics, and temporary programming firewalls were implemented to quarantine that system once it was declared clean so that if any remnant of virus did remain in the El Salvador it couldn't double-back and infect a system that had been given a clean bill of health. Simultaneous checks were run by Commander Delbridge in Engineering on the propulsion systems, since being able to breathe wouldn't help the crew much if the warp core decided to explode. Though unsurprised, all involved were still grateful to confirm that engineering systems were clean as well, and the same programming quarantine procedures were enacted there as with the life support coding. Savot left the Tactical systems diagnostic for Ingersoll since that was not only her area of concern but also her recommendation; until she could get to it he merely deactivated the weapon systems so no friendly fire incidents could take place if any of the virus had been able to hide itself there.
Ensign Jamison's scientific background and total recall capacity would make her a tremendous asset in checking the computer systems as well. Savot genuinely expected to find no further problems with the computers, but it was always prudent to double-check when lives were at stake. It also wouldn't do to lose the new El Salvador so soon after her initial launch. As a matter of fact, due to the interference of the computer virus they hadn't actually completed the shakedown run tests on the Tactical systems since that's what they were preparing to initiate when everything began to malfunction. Long-range communications passed the test; however, as Admiral Lisa Hayes' image popped on the main viewscreen with no trouble.
=^=Commodore Savot, it's good to see you well, you and your ship=^=, the considerate but no-nonsense flag officer said by way of greeting.
Savot dipped his head slightly in a show of gratitude, "Thank you Admiral, with the exception of Ensign Yutaro we had no significant casualties. Our Chief Medical Officer has; however, provided him excellent care especially given the circumstances of the past several hours. With your permission Admiral I'm sending a message to his family along with the shuttle taking him back to Starfleet Medical, and I state for the record his being welcome to rejoin us when he is able should he so desire."
Lisa's slightly weathered face smiled softly and she nodded, =^=Permission granted, Commodore. If your ship and crew are up to it, we've got an assignment of a diplomatic nature for you, which will happen to take you by the Lambda Threis facility which is equipped to assist in the de-radiating of your ship's hull in a timely fashion. Normal cycle takes as few as 5 hours, but they can do a more precise decontamination procedure that will avoid having to completely evacuate your ship that will only increase that timeframe to 21 hours. Seems to me a fair trade-off for the convenience it'll buy you.=^=
Savot arched an eyebrow in consideration of that point before asking, "Does the nature of our diplomatic assignment allow for a delay of that length Admiral?" Upon Hayes' assurance that it wouldn't be a problem Savot nodded, "In that event I am in full agreement with you. The crew have undergone enough strain even before the ship's launching; they have well earned a chance to properly settle in."
Admiral Hayes nodded fervently, =^=Couldn't agree more Commodore. I'll send you a full briefing once you arrive at Lambda Threis, but the basic details of your assignment will be to proceed to a world that joined the Federation a little shy of 5 years ago. Despite being Federation members they've been reluctant to allow their youth to undergo Starfleet Cadet training. With the El Salvador-C's role as an Academy vessel, we've been able to finally persuade them to take a first step by permitting a handful of their up-and-coming students to stay on the ship on a temporary basis, observing some of your missions to see how Starfleet goes about handling things, then the students can take what they've learned back to their world and give them a clearer picture upon which to base their decisions on whether or not to change their minds about letting their students apply to Starfleet Academy.=^=
Savot nodded with what enthusiasm was apparently on a vulcan by an external observer, "A worthy assignment indeed, Admiral. I thank you on behalf of the crew for being entrusted with so important a task. I'll contact you upon reaching the Lambda Threis station, Admiral."
=^=Godspeed, Commodore=^=, Hayes' face departed the viewscreen after a firm nod of support.
Savot turned from where he'd been working at Operations on the diagnostics towards where Ensign Jamison was sitting at her Science station. He double-checked the input at the Helm before speaking, "Ensign Jamison; as you heard we've been given our first assignment. Our first stop is the Lambda Threis station, coordinates have been laid in. Would you care to give the order to get underway?"

After grumbling over the doctor's medical questionaire for an hour, Sarah got herself a bite to eat, a shower, and a fresh uniform, and headed for the Bridge. She stepped off the lift just as Savot made his rather generous offer to Kate. Sarah, gave her friend a wink and an encouraging nod as she moved to the Tactical station. Once there, she saw that the Tactical systems were in Standby Mode, with the weapons de-activated. She immediately entered the commands to begin the diagnostic cycle. which, she was pleased to note, went very quickly indeed. It was only a couple of minutes before the console chirpped at her and declared the systems clear. "Captain, Tactical and Security systems diagnostic is cimplete. No sign of the virus. We can begin testing weapons at any time, sir."

The shuttle approached its host ship with care and some speed as getting aboard was imperative in starting the new mission. "Commander Gaz to the El Salvador; request permission to land."
<reply if wanted>
"Good to be home; proceeding with landing procedures." Taking the dorsal approach high, clearing the glide path and locking the localizer for an instrument landing, the shuttle was soon in the bay and settled into its locks. Leaving the up-link disabled due to the recent virus issues, shutting down the systems and safing the shuttle, Jamey exited the craft and headed to the bridge.
[prior to the command to get underway]
The bridge was a busy hustle, as it seemed to be most of the time for a ship named El Salvador, Jamey took his station at the CONN. New crew were arriving, taking stations, leaving for medical exams, and general maintenance of this system or that. Time for formal introductions was at a minimum. Jamey nodded at the new Ensign sitting at her Science station requesting, "Ensign, request quarantine of the flight systems. I'll be happy to run the purge and diagnostics from here." He didn't expect that the latest debacle caused much harm to the flight systems as 'adrift' was the main flight result from the virus.
<Ensign Jamison reply if wanted>
With the acknowledgement, Jamey started the high level diagnostics of the flight programs. Most of the routines were clear and reloaded from the safe backups that Savot has so cleverly orchestrated. Of the special routines that had grown over time and some from as far back when other ships held the name El Salvador - he had to recall, test, verify clean, and then restore. The system responded to the imposed firewall, clean and restored. Jamey stated running the basic flight, offensive, and defensive simulations he logged the result as returned nominal. RCS thruster systems were now at station keeping and running on normal systems - secured from safe mode and nominal as well. Reporting all of this to Savot via system message Jamey heard the following after the Admiral's communication was finished. "Ensign Jamison; as you heard we've been given our first assignment. Our first stop is the Lambda Threis station, coordinates have been laid in. Would you care to give the order to get underway?"
It would take some acclimation, being an academy ship, as it has been some time since he had been on such a ship (remembering the "H" named academy fleet of days gone by) he awaited a response with a smile - his hand hovering over the commit coordinates command now blinking ready to really test the new ships reconstituted systems.

[Prior to arriving on the bridge, but after leaving sickbay]
Kate had just left sickbay, glad to be away from the doctor and out of sickbay. She tapped her combadge.
=/\= Ens. Jamison to Science Lab 1. How are preparations going? =/\=
A minute later her combadge chirped.
=/\= Ens. Phelps in Lab 1. Preparations are going as planned. We've had a few fluxuations in the main scanner and have contacted Engineering. They are sending someone to repair it. =/\=
She stepped into the turbolift and replied.
=/\= Jake, see that it gets done and send me a report when the repairs are finished. =/\=
She settled against the wall of the lift as it rose towards the bridge. Her mind drifting back...
Her hand slipped off the rock she was hanging from, her head snapped back as she fell the length of the tether holding her to the cliff face. She grunted as she pulled herself hand over hand back to where she'd been and wedged her feet against the cliff and gripped the rock face with her hands, her knuckles whitening.
Kate smiled as her mind drifted, her reverie ended as the turbolift doors opened. She stepped onto the bridge, glanced around and took her station.
[Bridge]
Time to get to work kiddo she told herself as she settled into the chair. Her hands moved over the console as she began running checks on the all the systems she had at her control. She had just finished her systems check when the Admirals image appeared on the main screen. She half listened as the Admiral and Captain spoke, her eyes on the console and not on the conversation. Her head jerking up at the Captains words.
Katie looked at him then at Sarah before returning her gaze to the Captain.
βYes sir.β
She was about to give the order when the helm officer, whom she had seen arrive on the bridge while she was doing her checks, spoke.
Kate swallowed and turned in his direction. She quickly ran through the roster in her head, as she set the quarantine.
βPlease do Commander Gaz.β
She paused before continuing with the order from the Captain. Her voice showing her nervousness. Don't stumble over your words Kate. She told herself.
βCommander, set course for Lambda Threis, warp four.β
She settled back in her seat, her mind once more on her job.
(Tag Commander Gaz)
"Course indeed laid in and ready, engaging." Jamey replied as the familiar spin up of the warp engines came to life and the streak of stars momentarily filled the view screen. "Captain, systems reporting nominal - warp core stable - power stable."

[Sometime later as the ship is underway to Lambda Threis, after shift change; side story stuff, introductions and such.]
As the duty shift ended and each stations replacement arrived on the bridge. Each officer updated the on-shift person of statuses and in progress actions. The next CONN officer was a young Benzite eagerly scanning over the flight plan as her respiration unit was adding trace amounts of needed gasses to the oxygen atmosphere. Jamey could remember that not so long ago that their respiration units were on the outside of their duty uniform. Advances in Benzite technology had all but made them invisible, and he assumed, part of their uniform.
With that hand off over and walking toward the turbo shaft he found himself sharing a lift with Ensign Jamison. Leaning over just a bit to talk, "I'm sorry about requesting that system quarantine without even a small introduction, but time seemed to be unfavorable." Turning to face Jamison and extending a hand, "Jamey Gaz, driver of this boat I guess you could say."

[At the end of Kates duty shift]
Ensign Jake Phelps relieved Kate at her station at the end of her shift. The two conversed briefly about the repairs that had been made in the science labs before she made her way to the turbolift. She reached it at the same time as Commander Gaz and they entered it together.
He spoke as the doors closed.
She took his hand as he introduced himself.
Kate settled slightly as she spoke.
βNo apology necessary Commander. The time wasn't right for introductions. I'm Kate Jamison, the new Chief of Science.β

[Joint Post with Kate Jamison][Side Story]βNo apology necessary Commander. The time wasn't right for introductions. I'm Kate Jamison, the new Chief of Science.β Smiling Jamey replied, βChief of Science, I have been one of those myself back in the day. Was a lieutenant back then I think - Intrepid class. Wasnβt my calling, transferred as soon as I could.β Kate nodded βDo you like being at the helm better? I would be afraid of sending the ship crashing or something. I can pilot a shuttle but not sure I could pilot something this large.β βYes, I enjoy piloting. Back to my first love I guess you could say. Grew up piloting cargo ships out of Bajor and Deep Space nine just before the war.β The lift came to a stop at deck 3, "Was heading to the officers' lounge, care to join me?" βIβd like that. I havenβt gotten to see much of the ship yet other than the labs.β She paused and thought for a second. βWhat else do you do when youβre off duty?β Smiling, Jamey thought for a moment then answered. βBoring stuff really, as a joined Trill, I have a lot of thought to muddle through. With the new academy ship, I have had my hands full programming holo lessons for flight Cadets.β Arriving at the lounge, the two walked in to a larger area with a bar on the back wall facing a large set of windows - facing forward to a field of stars as the ship made its way to Lambda Threis. Taking a seat near the windows, the waiter asked for their order. βI think Iβll have klah.β The waiter smiled sort of a sheepish smile and turned to Jamison. Katie didnβt have to think about what she wanted. There was one drink she always chose. βIβll have a raktajino please.β She turned back to the Commander indicating she was done with her order. Being a joined Trill, Jamey didn't mind asking people about their past as it was major part of his own life - life after joining he thought. βI hear you grew up around the academy? I think I remember a Jamison working around the Academy, your father maybe?β βYes my father was an instructor at the Academy. Although he spent most of his time aboard ship, teaching on-the-job so to speak. I often would go on trips with him. Thatβs how I learned the languages that I know.β She could have kept talking. She loved talking about her childhood but caught herself and stopped. βWhat about you Sir?β "Please, we are off the clock. Jamey is fine." Sitting back in his chair, lifetimes of memories were at the call, βYou may not know this, but as a joined Trill I could tell you several childhoods really. But mine was different than most on Trill. My father is human, my mother is Trill. My father worked as an Ambassador for Trill at the Federation; my mother remained on Trill working for the Symbiosis Commision. Being half human half Trill, this puts me odds with either race. When I was home, even with spots, I was teased. I was a stranger at home and on Earth, being apart of neither.β Rubbing his forehead, βIt was stressful to say the least. I much rather talk about my past hostβs memories.β Kate had known a few Trills and many other races. They all fascinated her and she enjoyed learning about them. Her ability to pick up languages and to be able to recall information made this easy for her. βIβd like to hear some of the stories of your hosts sometime if you donβt mind..β her voice trailed off as she suddenly felt embarrassed to be asking a senior officer something as personal as that. βNo, I donβt mind. I have to deal with those memories on a daily basis. They are as much an asset as they are a curse.β Not wanting to dominate the conversation, βWe can talk about that anytime, I would rather hear more about you. Any siblings?β Kate sipped her raktajino, which the waiter had placed in front of her, not wanting to interrupt their conversation. βI have a brother, he and I were close growing up but heβs gone off to do his own thing. He is doing research near the Klingon border and I havenβt heard from him in a while. My mother and father are back on Earth taking some time to just be together since I have left the nest, so to speak.β βIβm glad to hear about your parents taking some time for themselves,β He added. Hearing her talk about her parents recalled something he had glanced at in her academy records. βIβve only had a moment to scan your records but I noticed an expungement. I know a little about the Academyβs legal system, there must have been a lawsuit of some type.β Not wanting to sound to forward but sounding that way anyhow, βProbably nothing more than a first time offence. Any light you could shed on that for me, between senior officers?β It wasnβt Jameyβs responsibility to dive into a personβs past but he didnβt want to be caught in a situation with a shipmate without knowing character. Also, he knew all too well how hidden stories have a way of causing grief later down the road and affecting more than just a single person. Katies cheeks flushed at his question. Sheβd all but forgotten about the βincidentβ. βI β¦ um β¦. broke into the science labs in my first year. Thanks to my father they removed that little note from my files. I ended up in the wrong crowd and paid the price.β She had lowered her gaze and was staring into her drink as she spoke. Seeing her embarrassment caused somewhat of one in his own memories. With more than one lifetime of mistakes to remember, he quickly became sorry that he asked, or allowed himself to ask the question. βHey, Iβm sorry, I didnβt mean to make you uncomfortable.β The waiter was back and he took this time to break the awkward moment, βHow about another round?β

Nayomi awoke feeling refreshed, she looked over her clock and gasped. She had slept for almost ten hours! She jumped out of bed, grabbed her comm and called sickbay who assured her things had not fallen apart without her, everything was in order. Yutaro had been successfully transferred and they did not need her back immediately to solve any crisis. This left Nayomi somewhat uncertain as to what to do with the rest of her time off. So she pulled on a fresh uniform, brushed her hair and teeth and headed down the hall to the officerβs lounge for a chai tea and some breakfast.
The officerβs lounge was quite busy, now that things had calmed down everyone seemed to be taking the opportunity to get to know each other. Nayomi scanned the room for an empty table, and found nothing, she did however spot two familiar faces by the windows with an empty seat and weighed the proβs and conβs of interrupting. She decided to go with the proβs.
βCommander Gaz, nice to see you back on board again. Ensign Jamison, how are you settling in? Mind if I join you?β
<Tag Gaz and Jamison>
The waiter came by and Nayomi ordered here tea and a strawberry danish.
βDo either of you know anything about Lambda Treis?β She had read over the destination brief in her quarters, but beyond the name and that they would be scrubbing the ship of the last residues of radiation, she was at an impass. She was intrigued by having the new βcadetsβ on board and was looking forward to sharing her sickbay with some eager young minds.

βCommander Gaz, nice to see you back on board again. Ensign Jamison, how are you settling in? Mind if I join you?β Happy to see the familiar spots, Jamey smiled at Noyomi, "Please do; it's good to see you again." Jamey stood and pulled the seat for his crew mate and Jamison stood to shake Nayomi's hand. βDo either of you know anything about Lambda Treis?β With the trio seated, Jamey replied, "I only know for it's de-radiating facility. It is the diplomatic mission afterward that is of interest to me." <tag Nayomi / Kate>

"Sure join us. I'm finding my way around with no problems. Thanks for asking."
She leaned back in her seat and sipped her drink and nodded as the Commander answered her question regarding Lambda Treis.
"That's all I know as well."
It was nice to meet new people and get to know the crew in a relaxing environment. You got to see how they were when they were not on duty. It was a nice change.

Post by Savot on Mar 20, 2014 1:56:52 GMT
[Main Bridge: 3 hours from arrival at Lambda Threis]
Savot, due to both his vulcan heritage and physical conditioning over the years, was capable of remaining awake for several days if need be without losing effectiveness in senses or mental faculty. Though the crisis with the El Salvador-C was over, he wanted to keep a personal eye on things until the ship reached the station for de-radiating procedures. That being said, he also knew the necessity of making the crew comfortable with their duties in the absence of a senior officer looking over their shoulder. Ergo, Savot sat not closed in his Ready Room, but in the small Senior Officer's Mess that shared a wall with it in the short corridor behind the aft wall of the Bridge.
With the doors to the Mess left open, it was both invitation to any crewmember wanting to approach the captain with a question or issue, and allowed Savot to hear if anything happened on the bridge that required his return to the conn. He sat with a cup of fruit juice of Vulcan origin that had the consistency of somewhat pulpy orange juice but tasted more tart than sweet to most humans. To Savot it tasted like unsweetened grapefruit juice and while he didn't drink it regularly he found it pleasant enough.
He sat reviewing departmental damage reports and Lieutenant Commander Delbridge's repair estimates. Though Savot was at a loss as to why a report stating that some of the temporary power re-routing resulting in a warp field fluctuation if they travel at precisely Warp 5.5 needed to be accompanied by an audio component with a male voice singing the words: 'I can't drive 55'. The vulcan captain chalked it up to one of his friend's quirks involving a cultural reference that would doubtless be lost on Savot, so that when he asked Delbridge it would give the engineer the excuse to wax nostalgic. Of all the friendships Savot had formed over the years, and granted they were not numerous, the one with Chester W. Delbridge was by far the strangest.
They'd met several years earlier shortly after Savot was rescued from Mirror Universe captivity by the El Salvador-A. Savot had been permitted to join the crew once his origin in this universe had been confirmed and he served several months as Operations Chief until the -A was destroyed and he served briefly in the same station aboard the then-newly launched Prometheus-class El Salvador-B. News received shortly thereafter from his sister on Vulcan as well as the necessity of taking time to study the general history of the universe during his 7 years' absence in the MU drove Savot to transfer back to the Jupiter Propulsion Research Station in the Sol System where he'd been assigned before the test flight that had landed him in the MU in the first place. This time; however, he worked solely on engine design and warp theory where he encountered a young human who frequently bounced back and forth between the ranks of full Lieutenant and Lieutenant JG due to his frequent albeit quite ingenious pranks on station grounds.
The prankster, whose name Savot learned relatively quickly, often shared duty shifts with the, in his opinion, far too serious vulcan and decided to challenge himself to loosen him up or at least try and irritate him for the pure fun of it. There were many attempts over the years, a few legendary with some of the personnel still on Jupiter, and they'd continued even after Savot had finally returned to ship duty. Culminating in this latest, but undoubtedly not last, attempt with the musical report.
Savot countered as he usually did, by coming up with some method of using the elements of Delbridge's prank in such a way as to create something boringly intellectual. In this case, he assigned numerals to each of the notes contained in the brief audio recording and used them to write a complex equation using a non base-10 mathematical system. To solve it Delbridge would first have to deduce what base the equation was written in, which Savot had no doubt the engineer could accomplish but it would definitely be far more mundane and dull than Delbridge would have preferred. The 'elbow to the ribs' component would be that Delbridge himself had supplied Savot with the means to retort with the boredom in the first place.
Savot tapped the padd's controls to transmit his official reply to the repair estimate report as well as his personal addition back to the Acting Chief Engineer for his amusement and finished the remainder of his drink in silent musing for several minutes. This ship was new, but parts of the last El Salvador were with her; some of the most important of which were several members of the former crew. The El Salvador-B and her crew had become fundamental aspects of Savot's life. The bulkheads and deckplates of this ship would become just as much his home in time, as the new members of her crew would join with the returning crew to create a new whole. A gathering of beings working in camaraderie toward the common ideals that had brought each of them to Starfleet. The need to explore, to learn more about the universe and in turn about themselves, to risk adversity and come through it stronger for having faced the challenge, and to help where help was needed and they were able.
The unanticipated trouble with the computer-virus crisis notwithstanding... Captain Savot of the Federation starship El Salvador, was quite looking forward to it.

[Main bridge; Senior Officer's Mess]
The lift stopped and the doors opened to the small corridor just off from the main bridge. With just a few number of steps from the lift, Jamey saw the door to the senior officer's mess was open. Not that normal of a thing on a modern star-ship. Stepping into the door way, Savot was seated a one of the tables in the small yet efficient area.
Jamey had been assigned to the El Salvador B as a junior officer and became a flight control officer soon after. He had been through some, not all, of the trying times that accompanied the El Salvador. However, he had been transferred before Savot became Captain. He had only read reports and heard rumors about the change of command the El Salvador went through in its transition from the former Captain, now current XO Commander Deis Irae. Irae was Jamey's Captain during his time aboard but thought it unnecessary to even speak of the swap in position and rank but it intrigued him all-the-same.
He grew to be fond of Savot when he was the XO of the ship but gained more respect of him as Captain with each passing mission. Even though singular events aboard the ship seemed to be 'mission-length' now days. Confidence seemed to just pour from the Vulcan and endue the people near just by being in the same room. Being somewhat socially inept, Jamey wondered the difference - other than the Vulcan-fact. It was different for joined Trills. People seemed to want to know about past hosts and thus, intentionally or not, implied that the knowledge was somehow less because it was "from the worm" living inside. And while it was true that the memories and knowledge was more-or-less instant, it still took understanding and application for it to manifest externally. After all, he studied and had his own education before joining. It really was more of an amalgamation.
For years after joining, Jamey didn't want to take the symbiont name for that very reason. It was a joining of the two - a union, a blend- and taking the Gaz name was somehow admitting that the host was not part of the union. That somehow the host just became a medium of transportation. Jamey always thought during his more primary school days that the stories of the first union between a Trillian and symbiont was largely based upon the deception of the latter. The need for one to get out of the pools just to be able to explore - like putting on a pair of shoes. While he later took the name, it still pains him that it was because the Symbiosis Commission strongly urged him to 'get those thoughts behind him,' that he did.
Savot looked up from his reading and Jamey stepped the remaining step into the room. "May I join you Sir?" With the invitation he quickly paused at the replicator for a drink and with the new materialized cup in hand took a seat opposite to the Captain. "I have the flight plan for our trip to pick up the new Cadets. After our de-radiating at the Lambda Threis facility, I recommend this flight plan to Lumpur Seven in the Kuala System. It is along Federation flight paths and is traveled mostly by cargo carriers between systems." Using an old-Earth gesture, knocking on the table's surface, "Knock on, uh, what-ever this is made of, should be a normal, short flight and just slightly under the recommended speed of warp five; Engineering requested we stay away from warp 5.5 for the time being." With a smile, Jamey handed Savot the flight plan for his review.

[Main Bridge, Main Science Station]
Kate relieved Ensign Phelps upon returning to the bridge after sharing a drink with Commander Jaz Gaz and Lieutenant Chavet. It wasn't her shift and she knew she had more time coming before her official shift started but also knew her place was on the bridge. Her hands moved over the console as she performed the scans of the area through which they were traveling. She settled as she worked, becoming more comfortable with the station and her position as time passed. She tapped the comm, opening a direct line to the Senior Officer's Mess.
=/\= Captain, Is there anything specific you want me looking for Sir? =/\=
It felt good to be back working. She liked relaxation as much as the rest but liked her job even more. Even when off duty she was always looking for things to study.

Having filled her belly, slept and visited with her crew members Nayomi was feeling much more refreshed. The only thing not refreshing about her time off was her vid comm chat with her mother, but that could hardly be avoided, If Nayomi did not check in at least once a week the women was likely to commandeer a ship and drop by just to check in on her.
Once Nayomi arrived back at Sickby she had her head Nurse Janice give her a full report, all but three of the computer virusβs victims had been discharged and although those three where on bed rest, all of them had improved dramatically. Apart from a few scheduled physicals and organizing a inventory check on the supplies they had received from the shuttle, she had very little on the days schedule so retired to her office.
Nayomi pulled up the federation report on the Lambda Threis facility and read it over. The de-radiation procedures they used where advanced and she was pleased to know they would not need to leave the ship. It looked like about 50 members of their specialized crew would come over with their tech and do a room by room, deck by deck sweep. She would have to remember to make her bed.
She then brought up the file on the Lampurians. She had a child-hood friend study inter-planetary Archeology there and knew if was considered one of the highest educated planets in this quadrant, which made it even more odd to her that they had, thus far, kept any of their own children from joining the academy. Perhaps they did not feel it was good enough? Clearly she would need to make a good impression.
It sounded like their general society valued hard work, a well tuned mind and keen commerce. They had a few odd holidays (although none quite as odd as the earth tradition of wearing green for a day in march, drinking too much alcohol and claiming to be Irish all in the name of a long dead saint who would probably disapprove of the festivities had he been alive).
Medical wise there were no red flags, they breathed the same air as most species, and had no adverse reactions to anything common. They had bright orange blood, light orange skin, cat like eyes and slightly webbed hands, most likely thanks to the 90% water on their planets surface. They were shorter than most species, but made up for it in their louder than normal way of speaking. The report noted that they were considered to be graceful, and considering the only one Nayomi had seen before was a dancer in her sisterβs company, she could believe that.
Her research was interrupted by Janice who informed her that her first physical for the day had arrived, a Vulcan engineer. The rest of her day went by fairly quickly and it did not feel like long before she felt the familiar light jerk of the ship as it dropped out of warp. Sickbay had no windows, but she expected that they had arrived.

[Senior Officer's Mess]
"May I join you sir?", Jamey Gaz inquired as he entered the Mess and procured a beverage for himself from the replicator.
Savot nodded and extended his hand toward a chair, "Please do, Commander."
He listened with interest as the El Salvador's chief helmsman explained their projected flight plan, nodding in approval at Jamey's choice. Savot arched a brow and looked down at the table a moment before responding, "I believe the metallic furniture aboard ship consists of a reconstituted blend of polyduranide and nillimite; though I do understand your intended sentiment. While adversity is often believed to bring out 'the best' in us, I would not wish for the recent graduates among our crew to think that adversity is all that we face."
Jamey handed Savot the flight plan and the vulcan examined it as he finished the last of his juice, nodding as he returned his cup to the replicator for recycling then returning to the table and passing back the padd, "Indeed, I too have been apprised of Engineering's temporary warp incongruity via Mr. Delbridge's usual flair. Flight plan approved, Commander, well conceived."
Ensign Jamison's voice then came through over the Mess' intraship comms, =/\= Captain, Is there anything specific you want me looking for Sir? =/\=
Savot tapped his commbadge in response, "Upon confirmation of the computer virus being completely purged from all ship systems, utilize internal sensors to perform a detailed scan of the ship for levels of Theta radiation contamination. Prioritize ship sections from highest to lowest exposure so we can provide an efficient decontamination plan to the Lambda Threis teams and transmit your results to the station upon our arrival."
<Insert any further exchange with Jamey or other officers>
*************************************************************************************************************************************** [Main Bridge: Upon Arrival at Lambda Threis]
The El Salvador dropped out of warp near the de-radiating station, Savot sat in the center seat and turned toward Deis, "Commander Irae, please inform the station of our arrival. Request docking instructions and take us in." While he was perfectly capable of giving the orders to bring them into the station's docking pylons, he felt it important that the crew particularly the newer members to get used to receiving orders from the First Officer.

The Captains reply to her question came over the comm
=/\= Upon confirmation of the computer virus being completely purged from all ship systems, utilize internal sensors to perform a detailed scan of the ship for levels of Theta radiation contamination. Kate acknowledged the comm and set right to work running the required scans and formulating decom schedule that would satisfy all the necessary requirements.
She turned to the Captain and the Exec. "Sirs, I have the schedule of those scans for you and am ready to transmit to the station when needed." She tapped her console as she continued to speak. "I've also sent you both a copy of the schedule."
With that she turned her attention back to her station.

::For the first time in years, Deis has overslept. When she crashed it was hard and totally so it is a good solid half hour of alarm chime happening before she twitches and sucks in a deep breath, eyes snapping open into full wakefulness. Greyish eyes turn to toe chronometer and she utters a gruff sounding:: Shite! ::Dead sleep to fully awake and indeed physically reactive, pushing up off her bunk into immediate movement, pulling jammies off and just chucking them wherever. Being able to sleep and wake ready for full action is a skill that shes cultivated over the last few years and it is a skill that has saved her life a couple of times:: Computer shut it! ::grumbling to silence the alarm as she steps into the bathroom. Undress, sonic shower, "morning stuff", hair detangling wand, clothes::
::its maybe 8 minutes after waking that Deis is stepping out of her quarters and into the corridors, hitting the first turbolift to get to the bridge. To hell with breakfast she simply carries a mug of extremely strong and heavily sugared coffee with her, chugging it down with one hand as she gets her pips in place with the other:: Bridge. ::Stepping out of the turbolift and tossing the empty mug to a passing ensign:: Get rid o tha, aye...good man. ::Not even looking at the guy as he catches the mug, juggling the padd he was already holding, sliding into the FO's chair just as our fearless leader speaks::
Savot: "Commander Irae, please inform the station of our arrival. Request docking instructions and take us in."
::Deis gives her Captain an incremental respectful nod accompanied with an "aye Sor":: Open us a hail, iffen ye please. ::This only takes a moment as we were expected. Station informed of arrival, the screen blinks to life, the docking officer of the station appearing:: Rad Station this be First Officer Irae o th USS El Salvador requestin permission t dock fer de-rad procedures. ::Shes answered back pleasantly and instructions for pylon designation relayed to the helmsman on duty currently:: Right, take us in fer dock helmsman. ::wondering how long the de-irradiation will take us now that were here and goin::

[9 Hours Later...At the end of her duty shift]
Kate had gotten the requested scan schedule to the Captain and finished her shift. One of the joys of being the head of the department was long hours and the occasional double or triple shift. By the time she stepped into the turbolift to head for her quarters memories of those sleepless nights while in the Academy flooded her head.
Once back in her quarters she slipped into the shower and spent the next 20 minutes letting the water rush over her tired body. The water warm at first helped her muscles to relax. As it cooled it calmed the ache which had settled in her shoulders and lower back from sitting for so many hours. After such a relaxing shower it only made sense to find somewhere, other than her quarters to relax for the next few hours before finding some shut eye. Trying to sleep right off of a duty shift, especially a long one tended to leave her feeling even more drained. With this in mind she dressed and stepped from her quarters.
Next came a meal in the mess hall. The question being, which one was it β breakfast, lunch or dinner? She wondered considering she'd missed at least one, possibly two while on duty. She stood at the replicator for several minutes contemplating her choices. She finally chose to indulge in a hot fudge sundae with all the trimmings and a warm cup of hot chocolate. Nothing like an overload of caffeine to help in the relaxation process.
She stepped into the holodeck half an hour later, after having completely indulging in the sundae, right down to licking the bowl. The process of finding the right program took several minutes as she read through the list of installed programs. Once the program was chosen and installed she stepped into the holodeck, the door closing behind her β¦

[11 hours after docking at Lambda Threis: Captain's Quarters]
With the ship successfully docked and the decon teams already well into their work (each team accompanied at all times by 1 member of security, 1 engineer, and 1 medical to check on each major sector of the bio-linear chips), Savot left the bridge at the end of his shift and returned to his quarters. Ensuring Alfred and Isabel were safe and well in their fish tank off to the right against a far wall upon entering the CO's quarters, the vulcan captain unclasped his uniform jacket after removing his rank pips and secured it in the clothing refresher for cleaning before his next shift. The cleaning process took all of 5 minutes if that, but Savot saw no pressing reason to put it off.
Left in his uniform slacks and the black full-sleeved shirt he wore beneath his jacket, he activated the lights in one of the side chambers over a small table with 2 chairs around it's square surface. Delbridge had insisted that in addition to a workdesk the Captain should have a table in his quarters where he could host informal 1 on 1 discussions with his officers as needed.
::It had been a busy shift period. The Commander had spent her time getting everything checked out, squared away, and then followed with one of the decon groups for an hour or so. It didn't take long, however, for her to realize that shes was really just hindering the process and decided to try this "offtime" thing. Once to her quarters she just sits there for a while. Realizing that she has NOTHING to do in here. And being stuck in here will only make her dwell on things...one thing in particular.:: me an me bloody one track mind. ::She cant take the inaction. Deis gets up and heads to her closet, shedding uniform bits as she goes, dressing in the only other outfit she really has. Black, skintight, and covering her from just beneath the jaw/chin to the second knuckle of her hands, all the way down to the wedge heeled boots slid onto her feet, calves, knees. This isn't exactly a dawn colored gown...but it'll have to do. Once dressed she leaves her quarters, clothing strewn about carelessly. It'll be there later::
::It's straight to her Captain's quarters she goes, hitting the chime and lifting her chin a little, hoping she doesn't flat out blow it::
Savot was just dispensing some food into the fish tank when the chime rang on his door, and while he could wager a guess who it was he couldn't be certain so he stuck with a non-specific response of, "Enter."
He looked toward the opening door, dipping his head in greeting to the woman behind it, "Welcome, Commander. Please come in." His quarters looked fairly similar to how they'd looked on the El Salvador-B. The main entry area was the largest, housing his fish tank and with room along the floor for him to both meditate and practice some of his basic melee forms without having to go to a holodeck. To the right there was a smaller section of room separated by a wall with an open arch that led to his personal work space and the current location of his 'dinner table' of sorts. The chamber to the left housed his bed, and at the very back of that area were the sonic shower and restroom facilities.
Some vulcan weapons hung on the wall in places, out of reach of children oddly enough, as though he'd had young visitors in the semi-recent past. There was a phaser pistol on his workdesk in a state of mid-refit. The housing was a Starfleet model from the general time-frame of the Genesis incident, but it was clear by the components on the desk that it was being re-worked to house modern day phaser components, just inside the older pistol model.
::Deis passes through the door in all her somewhat dark glory and immediately finds herself somewhat comforted. Its the familiarity. Its nice to know that some things in life can be steadfast...no surprise at all that it should be Savot. She looks around the quarters with a little smile that she doesn't even realize is there, and it brightens when she sees the fish:: Laird...Alfred has a wee friend.
::Then she realizes that she hasn't exactly explained her presence here. Looking over the weaponry and especially the vintage phaser housing she casts for a work related reason...and just cant find one that makes any sense at all. So she sucks it up, takes a breath and blurts out:: I wondered iffen ye and I could talk, Cap'n. ::correcting herself here...she is apparently a little on the nervous side:: Savot. Ach...an I've interrupted dinner fer all, humanoid an ichthys.
Savot arches an eyebrow ever so slightly in pleasant surprise at the presence of a small smile on Irae's countenance, and follows her gaze to the fish tank where he nods in reply, "Indeed. During an emergency mission to the Mirror Universe where non-essential personnel were offloaded onto a Starbase for their safety, young Yarna Hope, daughter of then Science Officer S'reena Hope was somehow overlooked in the evacuation. When she was discovered aboard the mission window necessitated keeping her aboard with us so she stayed in my quarters as we had developed a rapport. In her time there she concluded that Alfred was lonely due to his solitude and needed a friend, which she then procured and donated to the cause."
He noted Deis' apparent discomfort but waited with quiet patience for her to initiate discussion on whatever was bothering her at her own pace. He quirks another brow at her initial use of rank then name, nodding to her extending a hand toward the opposing chair at the smallish square table, "You are always welcome to speak with me... Deis. Either in our capacity as the command pairing for this vessel or with regard to our long-standing friendship. Something appears to be occupying your thoughts. If you've not eaten your evening meal as yet you are welcome to do so here, while we speak, effectively eliminating 2 flying creatures with a single projectile."
::Deis smiles again...she remembers the name S'reena Hope. The idea of you playing Vulcan Uncle to a child actually makes her laugh. But its in a "Daaaw" sort of way...in no way derisive. That must be why all the weapons are on the higher parts of the walls. Makes sense::
::Its the "2 birds with one stone" comment that causes the tension in her to break and she laughs rather deeply...something that she has not done in a long time. At first its almost painful but once the initial release of it passes...it comes much easier. To the point of near tears. Its like a light flashing on in the dark. The jump of heartbeat on a flat-lined console.:: I will tha' then. ::And goes to the replicator. Canteloupe and Honey. She has a thing for sweets these days. Hard to come by in her previous "position". Once she has sat down she does feel a bit easier.:: T begin wi...as little as it helps...I am so sorry. Fer leavin. I didnae ave a choice. ::and here she nerves herself up, spearing a chunk of melon on a skewer:: An i missed ye ever day. I cannae explain a lot o it...classified. But i want t...anyway.
Savot gets his meal after his Exec, asking the replicator to produce a relatively simple salad and some sliced bread with a thin pool of mixed oil and herbs to dip said bread into. He didn't exercise the aversion to touching food with his hands that some vulcans still upheld, though he did refrain from eating meat whenever possible. His friend Delbridge's mother in Tennessee on Earth had made veggie versions of a number of her recipes in the vulcan's honor which were, admittedly, quite pleasing to one's palette.
He lifts a glass of Altair water to his mouth as he listens, blinking and furrowing his brow slightly at Deis' words before shaking his head, "You are not obligated to explain your actions to me. As your First Officer it was my responsibility to be prepared to assume command if the need arose. It did, and I did. I've never aspired to command, but I agreed to support your captaincy and whatever unfolded from that. I expected to be replaced following the mission during which you departed, but clearly that hasn't occurred even in the aftermath of the El Salvador B's loss, to my genuine surprise."
He took a bite of salad and lowered his fork as he drank another sip, "It was only to Starfleet that you owed an explanation for departing your assigned command without leave. And as your presence at this table aboard this ship indicates, they found your explanation fully satisfying to them, though I understand Section 31 leaves what I believe is called a 'sour taste' in the mouths of those who speak its name. And I am pleased at your return. This ship carries even more of its predecessor's spirit for your being aboard."

::Deis listens to this with something like frustration settling in place, and smothered as quickly as possible. She has to remind herself that she is dealing with a Vulcan here. A moment of silence spins out while she rises and goes back to the replicator, ordering a mug of fiercely sweetened green chai tea, sipping from it as she returns to the seat on the other side of Savots table. Putting that down she skewers a chunk of melon and honeys it, letting it drip before making it dissappear rather delicately::
Didnae say there be obligation, Savot. An when it come righ down t it...tis nae bout th El Salvador a'tall. Though she woulda been a poorer vessel fer th lack o ye. I will say tha...i knew i was leavin 'er in good 'ands...th best. Ill serve wi me whole heart this ship and 'er crew. Makes me happy tha she lives on in another form. But tha isnae why I returned t Starfleet. I took this position...t... ::Hell how do you say this kind of thing without just making a fool of yourself? Without setting yourself up for a rejection that is, frankly, logical. She holds a hand up to forstall his speaking before she has finished...tilting her head to the side and looking at him from beneath a spiking of inky black:: Do ye really nae know?
::Taking a breath and scowling a little:: Thar be one reason tha i still live. When th "accident" 'appened...::lifting a hand up to absently rub against the scarred jaw of her face:: i almost died. Shoulda died. Proper medicine was nearly nonexistant...th pain was...otherworldly. Blacked out a' one point...an i swear to th Stars twas yer face i saw. The door to the holodeck closed behind Kate. The stark black and gold checked walls no longer existed. The air around her alive with colors and sound. The trees and bushes alive with animals, and birds of various types. The scenario that of a tropical jungle. Kate took a few minutes to inhale the scents around her before bending over and picking up a long staff which lay at her feet. A slight smile crossing her face as she turned her head slightly taking in the sounds, listening intently for a sound she knew would be there.
A hoot sounded off in the distance and Kate took off through the jungle towards the sound. Her feet no longer encased in boots but bare, her clothing no longer that of starfleet, not even her normal off duty uniform but a light color tunic and drawstring slacks. Her feet making no sound as they hit the hard packed earth.
The distant hoot echoed through the trees once more, Kate had to stop several times to get her bearings and changed direction several times before finding a path which was overgrown and barely visible in the undergrowth. The sunlight filtered through the trees casting shadows around her as she moved, slowly now, her movements slow and methodical as she continued on the path, her eyes and ears intent on the world around her. She was close now.
Kate stepped off the path and knelt, her hands and eyes searching for tell tale sighs she knew was there. Her tunic sticking to her as the tropical heat caused her to sweat. She pulled a small vine from a nearby tree and tied her hair back away from her face as she continued to study the ground.
"Come on, where are you?" she murmured. Her eyes searching, a frown crossed her features as the signs told her something was different. A hoot, close by, too close caused her to stand and search for the creature which made the sound. Her eyes saw the creature, no more than a dozen steps from her. Their eyes met as she studied him, and he studied her. His features, that of an ape-like creature. His body covered with a soft, short gray - no silver fur. He wore a clothe wrap around his waist and nothing else.

Savot picked up on the brief flash of impatience, though surprisingly little of it was visible on her face, but he held his reply for the moment as it seemed clear Deis had more to say. He does raise an eyebrow in slight surprise when she says it's not at all about the ship.
While unexpected silences often inspire listeners to offer suggestions or guess what the other person was trying to say, Savot continued to hold his peace, confident in his friend's ability to convey what she intended. Though it seemed a rhetorical question and she continued speaking quickly after posing it, he did shake his head when she asked if he really didn't know what she was getting at.
He listened intently as she referenced the accident that caused her injuries, the true severity of which he believed he might not ever fully learn. He tilted his head slightly in intrigued consideration before nodding, "It's not inconceivable. During our service together we have had occasion to utilize the vulcan mind meld more than once. With particularly compatible mental 'essences' so to speak, repeated melds can establish a semi-permanent bond. This can often allow one participant to know the other's current emotional state when they're in close proximity. Though the range increment in this instance is certainly further than one would expect, if it was in any way responsible for your survival I'm extremely grateful for it."
::The look on Deis face after Savot stops speaking can only be described as long sufferingly deadpan. Yet at the same time she actually wants to laugh and facepalm herself repeatedly. Savot is the most intelligent person she has ever known...but hes just not picking up what shes laying down here. Finally a bit of the almost laughter comes to her face and she murmurs:: This be like crushin diamonds in me 'ands. Bloody Vulcans.
::This is...excrutiating. She cant come right out and just SAY it...and he is not exactly reading between the lines here. But then He wouldnt. Hes probably never even considered it. Shes not even the same species. Deis sits back, puts down her melon skewer and looks at him, a ghostly faint quirk of smile comming over her lips as he actually gives her an idea here:: Ye ken Savot...i amna explainin this th best. But i 'ave a elegant solution. Weve melded afore, aye? Lets just do tha. Because i be thinkin i can show ye better'n i can tell ye. Mm?
His brows raise again at her slightly colorful language and knows enough of human idioms to gather that there's something he's not getting. And due to their proximity he can slightly sense that it's something she's a little shaky about revealing, but she surprises him with a willingness to meld.
Savot's brow rises but he nods slightly, "If you wish, I'm willing to perform a meld with you. However, if there are details about your absence whose revelation you're unwilling to leave to chance, I might pick them up unintentionally. Are you certain?"
::That makes her smile much more truely. She didnt even consider that it might make a LOT of "storytime" much more efficient. There are a few things that she simply refuses to speak of...and then there are the things that she SHOULD not disclose. But when it comes right down to it...melding with this man is inevitable.:: Given our mutual experiences o'er th years...i ken tha its gunna 'appen sooner r later. Tis logical t bow t th inevitable. This way emotion does nae hinder me...an yer lack thereof willnae cause barrier t understandin. ::He would know that wasnt an accusation of coldness or obtusity. Call it a cultural differential:: Fair warnin dearlin...some of it isnae very pretty...but tis nevertheless true. Do it. I trust ye wi me inner self.
Savot takes a sip of water before rising and carrying his chair around to the other end of the table so as not to worry about reaching over plates of food during the contact. "I don't know if you're aware of the depth of compliment that statement means to a vulcan. Our katra is the essence of all that we are, all that we have the potential to be. I shall endeavor to remain worthy of that trust."
Resuming his seat, with Deis' own chair turned to face his, Savot reaches slowly for the katra contact points common to most humanoid species. His thumbs touch her chin, index fingers under the eyes beside the nose, middles on her temples, ring fingers landing near where the underbelly of the earlobes begins to come away from the head. His voice speaks low and steady, "My mind to your mind... my thoughts to your thoughts... our minds are merging.... our minds... are One."
An occasional side effect of initial contact, both Savot and Deis see their faces through the other's eyes. And then 'mental images' of each of their bodies appear in the visualization of Deis' shared mind formed by personal thoughts and identity. Savot's appearance remains as it did during dinner, while Deis was dressed in a uniform with a blue medical department collar, but with the 4 pips of a captain. And they stood in what appeared to be a hybrid room aboard the last El Salvador, half sickbay and half captain's ready room. Savot stood silently, the 'driver' of the journey, awaiting the navigator's guidance to the destination she wished to reach.
::Hearing those words, the chant that accompanies the meld, takes her back quite a ways. When he makes contact with her face she slowly closes her eyes, heart hammering just a little, hands entwining together for a moment before she manages to relax. It was and remains the strangest sensation that Deis has, or will ever know. Feeling and seeing Savot there all at once, a part of her.::
::Her hair is different...the soft light brown that she used to wear tightly coiled up, but is down on her shoulders while within. No scarring to her face...she looks younger and for reasons well known with her doctor captain unform she is wearing a pair of black ballet slippers. This shifts back and forth though...one moment she is garbed as the younger doctor captain, the next in a gown made of dawnlight orange and yellow. The brightness fades into the deep black that she favors lately, hair spiking midnight. Savot appears in full dress uniform one moment with First officer pips, black shorts alone another, wearing a particular brimmed hat another. It is a lot easier with this paradigm than formless emotion alone. She inputs coordinates, and the destination is no less complicated a place than her heart.::
::Once the pair are blazing through the stars of the inner mind, a hundred different memories overlay the screens and consoles around the "Bridge". One of them shows a brand new Doctor walking onto the old El Sal, while another has Deis in her Readyroom as Savot is talking with growing intensity to someone who is not there. Delivering a child on a strange planet. Attending a lecture on Gorn Anatomy. Performing surgery with green blood on her hands, repairing an axe wound::
::Every single image of import, every image that truely means something is in the Vulcan's presence. So many images of his face, and how amazingly beautiful he's always appeared to her. The last image is shown on the large overhead screen. Deis is curled up on her side, almost in a little ball. There is no sound but she is screaming. Half of her clothing is burned away on the left hand side from the side of her face to knees, even her hair on that side. The burn damage is extensive and very nearly mortal. She seems to be hiding behind a bulkhead as things smoke and sizzle around her. Phaser and disruptor fire blazes overhead as she reaches to a fine chain carried around her neck and pulls out a holo locket. The face inside it is his and even with the pain, before her vision goes black she smiles, clasps that beloved countenance to her...then there is nothing::

Kate moved slowly, her eyes still on the creature before her. She side-stepped back onto the path. She never took her eyes off the creature as he soon joined her on the path. She heard rustling in the trees above and in the surrounding underbrush. "You've brought friends this time." she stated as she took a step backwards. The program had a random factor to it which she enjoyed. No two trips into this adventure were the same. She smiled as she swiveled on her toes and took off down the path. She heard the excited hoots above and on either side of her as the creatures there gave chase. Not chase exactly, but keeping pace with her, herding her. Kate laughed as she ran.
Kate stopped and leaned against a tree to catch her breath. She listened as the underbrush and trees became silent. Now what? she thought as she slowly straightened. Her eyes searching the path and the surrounding area. There was nothing, no sound, no movement anywhere, even her silver shadow, who had been right behind her the whole time, hooting and hollering was gone. Several minutes went by before she began moving again, this time slowly and carefully as she searched the ground before her and listened for anything out of place among the trees beside the path and above. She knew they couldn't have gone far.
The trees thinned and soon fell away revealing a clearing about 20 feet in diameter, an almost perfect circle. In the center there stood a small round mound of dirt. It appeared to be, not a mound of dirt but a dirt hut of sorts. βYes, time for the real fun to begin.β she said out loud, seeming to the air. But she knew from experience that her voice was indeed heard and her words understood.
She moved slowly into the circle as she did the underbrush around the circle began to sway as other creatures, similar in stature to the silverback moved out into the circle. The silverback himself stepped from the underbrush not 2 feet from where she stood. Kate turned to face him, her eyes on his, neither moved, the only sound was a soft hooting from the creatures around them as they took stock of each other.

[In the shared depths of their minds]
Savot's mental presence accompanied Deis' through the journey down the proverbial memory lane. The only one that elicited an outward response on his mental avatar's features was the one in which he'd spoken to a hallucination of his deceased father in Captain Irae's Ready Room, but his composure returned nigh instantaneously following a brief appearance of his stoic Healer mother and Priestess novitiate sister. He makes no outward reaction to his changing wardrobe through each scene.
The last collage of imagery in particular the final violent scene in which he also features leave no middle ground for lack of understanding this time, and he finally grasps her meaning. His head dips in understanding, eyes close momentarily in sympathy with the suffering of her horrific burns. The scene around them reverts to the Ready Room of the Prometheus class predecessor, Savot's image standing over an abandoned quartet of rank pips with a young human Science officer trying to absorb the news rising to strength everyone except himself had known was there.
Several instances of communication on the Main Viewer play back to back, each time the vulcan referred to himself not as Captain of the ship, but commanding the ship, unwilling to cement the former Captain's absence.
Then, after the damning explosions that crippled the El Salvador-B, after the services for the lost crew, after the Court Martial proceedings to determine the vulcan's culpability in the vessel's loss. The deaths of living beings far more important, obviously, but alone with his thoughts Savot would ponder the hypothetical return of his former Commanding Officer. Having to tell her he had failed to keep her ship safe.
::The physical Deis sits there perfectly still, greyish eyes closed, yet there is expression on her face, one not seen since she blew the airlock from the Prometheus El Salvador. Unhidden pain, and tears. Unaware of them, yet still she hadn't thought herself capable of them anymore.::
::Inside the meldscape she just watches the screens, head tilted with a barely perceptable frown...not of dissapproval. Of regret. Regret so deep that it colors each sight from her eyes, each breath she takes, every moment until returning to this ship. As He shows her his shock, and eventual growth into what she always knew him capable of, she stands from the helmsmans chair and raises fingers to the screen showing her old readyroom. The scene changes to her removing her pips, sheer anger on her face as she receives orders from a rather obscure Admiral. His face is blurred, voice distorted...but the faces of her dead Mother and Father are not. Nor is the face of a certain cardassian of rather high rank::
::It was rage that sent her out...but it was bloody justice that kept her going afterwards. There were no channels through which she could pursue it. And no time to make arrangements. No time even to tell the one that mattered most why, oh god why. Throughout the loss of the El Sal-B, the memorials, the court proceedings he would see the image of her standing ghostly behind him. Oh she knew. But she couldn't help him without tainting everything with the disaster that was coming.::
::Over the screens there is a barrage of imagery. Broken down space scow battles. Close range melee. A hundred of these scenes. Battle after battle after battle that turned an innocent woman, doctor, Captain...into what can only be termed as an antihero... for a time. There is the imagery of her holding a very old fashioned romulan disruptor in the face of a battered cardassian... but she manages to kill the image before making him see her executing him. She was already scarred and hardened by the time the final blast came::
::Her mental self turns and speaks to the inner self of the man, Savot, just seeking to give him ease on the old destruction:: Nae e'er value a thing above those ye serve. Those who serve wi' ye. Thank ye... fer becommin everythin that I en ye were. An forgive me fer forcin it.
Savot's avatar nods slowly, firmly agreeing with her spoken sentiment, then shaking his head at her last words, "Change is in our nature, in the nature of the universe itself. Even stars do not burn eternal. You didn't force the change. Your Admiral didn't force it; the Cardassian didn't force it. Each played a part, became one variable among millions that added up to become the events that unfolded for each of us."
"Your willingness for this meld has not only shared your reasoning with me, but permitted me the opportunity to release the final remnants of the illogical guilt I bore for failing to perform at a standard you hadn't actually demanded of me", the avatar begins to open his mouth to continue, but he appears to think better of it and instead releases the meld.
********************************************* [Captain's Quarters]
The mental theater fades, and the vision of their genuine surroundings returns to each participant. Readily noticeable to Deis would be a nearly dried streak of ever so slight wetness down his cheek though his expression no longer bore any sign of it otherwise.
"I felt it more appropriate to say these words outside the mind meld. I care significantly for you as well. I valued our friendship, admired your proficiency as a healer and your willingness to rise to command when the need arose. That served as a behavior template I looked to many times for inspiration when the same duty fell to me. Illogical as the statement is, I believe I am at the peak of my potential when in your company, regardless of the challenges of the moment", it was a honest declaration, and very likely the closest he would come in this particular moment to saying that he loved her.

[Upon Successful Completion of the De-Radiation Procedure: Main Bridge]
Savot stood in front of the center seat directing his attention towards the speaker on the Main Viewscreen. "Our final confirmation teams have just disembarked Captain; the El Salvador is good to go."
The vulcan captain dipped his head in gratitude, "Your help is most appreciated, Threis Control. Please extend my thanks to your teams for their time and effort. Request permission to disengage." The station's deck officer nodded his approval and waved a farewell before ending the transmission leaving the El Salvador's viewer displaying the space ahead of them. "Lieutenant Tamarov, disengage docking umbilicals. Commander Gaz, thrusters until we clear the station, then lay in your derived course for Lumpur 7 in the Kuala system and engage at the region-permissible warp speed of 4.8."
"Commander Irae, please contact the Lumpurian government and inform them of our ETA. Arrange the duty roster so that Doctor Chavet is rested and on-duty upon our arrival so she can perform the initial physical examinations on our guest students", turning from his trusted First Officer, Savot takes his seat and taps the intraship communications to Engineering, "Savot to Delbridge. When the engine output fluctuation has been repaired, please confirm the operable status of all equipment within the student quarters. Replicators, lighting, refreshers, in preparation for our imminent arrivals. Bridge out."
Savot turned in his chair to face the Tactical station, "Ms. Ingersoll, please arrange security escorts for the students during their time aboard. Allow them their personal space of course, but as they are non-Starfleet personnel regulations dictate they not be completely unattended in mission-critical areas of the ship. Escorts are to exercise full diplomatic respect with their assigned students."
"Lieutenant Jamison, review the students' files and determine each one's focus of study to determine who best to have them shadow during their time with us. I was told there is at least 1 student in each of the main branches of Navigation, Tactical, Operations, Science, Medical, and Engineering, with 15 students in total", Savot instructed the young Science chief.
(Assume about 9 hour travel time from here to Lumpur 7. Commander Irae's next post will establish our arrival. I'll be posting a basic plot outline and mission details in the Mission OOC thread to provide a framework in which people can feel confident posting without fear of derailing the intended plot flow.)
