Daniel had spent a lot of his off-duty time in his quarters, not for any particular reason, he just wanted to take the time to reflect on the mission, and ponder the likelihood of them coming across the Augments again anytime soon ...
He had contacted Star Fleet Intelligence via sub-space to give his report. They, hardly surprisingly, he requested the Excalibur's complete logs and records for the duration. He had informed them, several times in fact, that he did not have the authority to provide such information, and they would need to contact commodore Ryat herself, and most likely Star Fleet Command as well ... His superior was, understandably annoyed, but all he could do was shrug off the mans annoyance, after all, he was still at this point a member of the Excalibur Crew, despite his 'Intelligence Division' status.
~~~~~~~~~~
He was stood to the left of the Center Seat as the Excalibur dropped from warp almost two hundred thousand kilometers from Star Base Sixteen ... Located in the Aldebaran Sector, it orbited a barren, lifeless Planet, and although devoid of any form of atmosphere the Star Base used the surface as surplus storage, allowing them to be utilised as a mid-transit point for deep range or long haul cargo carriers. It was also used as a Maintenance and Repair Facility for the Fleet.
=^= USS Excalibur .. .. Reduce your approach speed to one quarter impulse .. We will contact you at the inner marker prior to taking remote helm control for docking =^= the 'Base dock-master instructed.
=^= Understood =^= Alyana gave the order to the Navigator and the ship began her slow approach ..... At the inner marker, set fifty thousand kilometers out, the 'Base took control of the Helm and expertly guided the massive Constitution Class Excalibur into her designated Berth. Umbilicus extended from the gantry and connected to the ship, then two pressurised walkways extended, meeting airlocks on the rim of the Saucer Section and also the Engineering Section.
=^= Excalibur .. you can shut down your warp core now .. you are on external power =^=
Daniel could see the Operations Chief doing as ordered then confirming the power status. commodore Ryat stood, informing the Senior Staff to arrange Shore Leave on a rota basis. She was going to go over to the 'Base herself but wanted to meet the new arrivals first, she walked down to the airlock, Schirra in tow, to greet the new crew members who would be coming on board. It was something she tried to do but the number of crew changes recently meant that she hadn't been able to greet them all, yet. Daniel could see the faces of the 'newbies' who were coming aboard, some who would be experiencing their first space-borne assignments. He could also see an older Officer, sporting a Captains Rank, but with the unmistakable logo of the Diplomatic corps above ....
Alyana offered her hand to the Ensign in blue who was the first to arrive. "Welcome to the Excalibur Ensign, I'm Commodore Alyana Ryat."
It had been a long journey to star-base 16 so when Snil finely stood in the arrival hall he was a little overwhelmed with all the noises and impression, he rubbed his ears it was a little much after so long with just small crew and passengers on board the small ship that had taken him from his home to the star base, he had had a couple of month leave on Vulcan before this new assignment. After a minimum of time to get acquainted with his surroundings he decided the most logical plan would be to locate one of the mess halls, he hoped to get a decent meal before another long stretch of space (interesting as it my be). On the way he attracted a few looks, not many male vulcans was seen whit long hair, or a frown and he had both. With a very unvulcan sigh he relaxed in one of the chairs and inhaled his food, it was good and time was running out, he had heard an announcement of the arrival of the USS Excalibur, his new post.
Snil wondered what kind of people the crew was made of, if it were mostly humans or a mixed bunch, not that it mattered much anyway. Snil was not nervous per se just a little apprehensive, he always was when meting new people especially people he would have to interact with, the only time he felt fine with meeting people was when he was at work. One of his biggest concerns was that he was uncertain that his mental shilds would be adequate after the long leave, and sins most other species was to him very touching he would have to be careful if he didn't want to invade peoples privacy.
When he was called to the airlock on the Excalibur, he took a moment to collect him self, he just hoped it would aright. When he arrived he looked coldly around there was a couple of people he thought would be his new crew mates, one of them walked up to him and presented her self, he looked at the hand she had offered and a small nervous look flickered in his eyes but was gone just as quick, instead of taking the hand he held up his own in the traditional vulcan greeting " greetings Commodore I'm Snil and I'm sorry to be impolite but my shields are a little shaken and I dare not touch you" he said and hoped she wouldn't hold it against him but he had found not to take her hand to be the lest offensive of the offered solution.
He watched the Vulcan as Commodore Ryat introduced herself and he reciprocated, somewhat nervously, especially for a Vulcan. This was something relatively new for Star Fleet, most of the Medical duties were encompassed withing the Chief Medical Officer's purview, so having a dedicated councillor on board was a trial in many ways ....
Nodding to the Vulcan he turned to see Captain Santos approaching:
"Captain, it's good to see you back, you may not remember me, I was part of a team that investi ....."
"The Tsinshan Situation, yes, I remember you, Commander." the Diplomat interrupted, "You're services were welcomed if memory serves. You are leaving the Excalibur ?" he asked, motioning to Schirra's black top.
"No, at least, not that I know of." he said with a wry grin, "But who knows with Intel .... If you'll excuse me Captain, I need to report to our, office. I hope we'll be able to share a drink in the Officers lounge once we're underway." He informed the Commodore that he would be gone for an hour having been ordered 'upstairs'. She grinned at his witticism.
~~~~~~~~~~
Arriving on Level Two he passed through the outer offices and into a long curved corridor circumnavigating the Space Station. Entering an office he strode to the young Lieutenant at the desk:
"Daniel Schirra." he said by way of identifying himself.
"The Admiral is waiting for you commander." she said, rising from her desk and asking him to accompany her along yet another corridor. At the end she tapped on the double doors, opening them before being told to do so. She allowed Schirra to enter and she walked around the large desk to place a PADD beside several others. He stood at the opposite side waiting for the man to acknowledge his presence, "Take a seat commander." the aide said before leaving the room.
"Commander. Good to see you are back with us. Figuratively speaking of course." Admiral Trood said picking up the PADD and looking over the data, "Let's go over a few things in your report." he said .....
~~~~~~~~~~
Two hours later he returned to the Excalibur ... The ship seemed to be almost overrun with Technicians, base Engineers, even a Carpenter. Master Chief T'Seng met him as he was about to step into the turbo-lift:
"Seems we're getting some extra attention Chief." Daniel said.
"Yes Sir. They have brought numerous updates for Tactical too. I'm not too sure how the Commodore is going to feel about the fact that they have taken her seat."
"Really ?" Dan asked.
"They've brought an 'updated' version apparently, more access to systems through arm-rest inputs et cetera. Though from what I gather she was kinda fond of that other chair .... Sir, mind if I ask a question ?"
"Feel free Chief."
"If, and it is just a remote 'if' at present, but if I wanted to try out for Officer training, would I need to leave the Excalibur entirely, or could I perhaps do some of the work while aboard ?"
"You want to go to the Academy, that's great ... Isn't it ?" he said, seeing her frown at the mention of the Academy, and obviously, Earth.
"As I said Sir, it was just a query. I'm more than happy where I am at present, but I had wondered if I could do it that was all. I'm the Tactical Officer on a Constitution Class Star Ship, so why would I even consider leaving to spend four years in school. If I had any aspirations of a command role in my future, I wouldn't hesitate obviously, but I'm a ....."
"A bloody good Master Chief Petty Officer." Daniel said, reassuring her. Koni smiled and thanked him for his time as the doors to the Bridge opened and they stepped into mayhem ! .... The Helm and Ops console was now larger, and several stations now had HUD interfaces, Tactical and Engineering had both received upgraded panels, Communications, Linguistics, Science stations too had benefited. It was almost as if command had had the equipment ready even before the Commodore decided to head for the Station.
"Where's Commander Psonoir ?"
"Off ship at present. As is the Commodore." T'Seng informed him as he strode to the 'window' ...
"Is this thing bigger ?" he asked.
"I don't think so." T'Seng replied grinning at his expression ..........
OOC: Have also posted on Echoes Beyond Echoes
Having received a subspace comm seventy lightyears out of Starbase 16 indicating his presence in the personnel department was required, Karka headed there immediately once the Excalibur had docked. He was shown into the office of an Admiral and told to sit down. "Yes, sir?" he said after a while when it appeared the Admiral had his mind on other matters.
"Ah. Yes," the Admiral coughed, "Commander... Sorry for bringing you in so soon after your arrival. I trust the Excalibur crew treated you well?"
"Uh... Yes, sir."
"I have assignment news for you, Mr Psonoir. You are being appointed to the position of Chief Engineering Officer of the USS Excalibur, effective immediately. I assume this pleases you, I can see you're smiling," the man had looked up, about to shift the padd with Karka's orders across the table. "Maybe burying the grief, yes I can understand that," he sighed, "Captain Escude for all his faults and for his final madness was a fine officer, well respected by many in the fleet and by not a few in the Admiralty, myself included... Oh, I know, Commander, I know, it will take some time adjusting to your new post given your discipline in the sciences. The engine room is a much different place from the science lab, though your background and qualifications indicate that you are well suited for such a change."
Karka coughed, "Indeed, sir, and Captain Escude will be a loss to the fleet. Umm..."
"Yes, Commander?" the Admiral jerked up suddenly from his reminiscence.
"This isn't the first time I have served aboard the Excalibur, sir."
The Admiral shot forward, inspecting another padd with, astonishingly, a monocle, "Ah. Yes. My apologies, Commander." He stood and dusted himself down, and with a few clearings of the throat, "Well, happy hunting."
He shook the Admiral's hand and exited, a smile on his face for more reasons than the Admiral's oversight, then remembered those few torturous moments on the approach to the coordinates of the Charon's presumed remnants:
"Nothing! Nothing!!" the navigator bashed the console, Schirra calming the man by means of talking over him to T'Seng, having her reload the torpedoes and then instructing the navigator to bring the ship about. Karka held on, fingers gripped - knuckles white - against the edge of the science console; the ship veered away from the object, unseen though it was, artificial gravity and inertial dampeners - already weakened - straining to keep them on the floor and in one piece.
"It was all impervious. The rush to memory. Antique signs above the doorway, a leprechaun sleeping in the corpuscular tunnels. A light from Hades drinking in lost souls... Of tripartite divisions of the stuff of the world, of arrival on the dark plain of the underside... the leprechaun was left in the subterranean chaos, indicted by the..."
He ceased listening to the recital, turning away blank-faced to be confronted with Lirwa. "Ah," the Hybrudean smiled and raised his champagne glass, "Karka. Glad you could make it. Isn't Wolui something?"
They were in the midst of a ball room, modelled on similar such buildings from twentieth century Earth, so Lirwa had told him. The place was opulently furnished almost to the point of nausea, of vulgarity. It shocked and amused him in equal measure to think this was the place where Lirwa's 'inner circle' of carousers, all from the Archive Lrotqi, met.
This was however as Lirwa had pointed out more than once the only place where he might be able to start his quest to become an 'official' vigilante, and explore the past of Hybrudea and of the quadrant, for there was no other time period the species could explore. Lirwa had given him access to the embarkation room, its security protocols less stringent than other archives currently in the same time period.
In that balance between archives existing close to each other in time - a subspace message's time to bridge the gap between the edifices being lost in the flux of the Standing Wave that passed insidiously through the region - there occurred to Karka some premonition (or was that rather a long ago remembrance, of someone not of his body? perhaps a common ancestor of all in the Alpha Quadrant?) of what was to come (or had been), out at the reaches at a particular set of coordinates - spatial only, the people he'd be with having only intermittent contact with the temporal flux that wove through all matter.
"Make sure he's taken care of, Lieutenant," Karka nodded to the man who stood to attention then led the young Vazon into the detention cells of Starbase 16. "John," he called down the narrow corridor, the 20 something one-time augment leader not turning round, "Remember what I told you. And stay out of trouble... Don't go taking any bribes."
Vazon slowly shook his head and marched off down the corridor, the security lieutenant hurrying to catch up. Shaking his head and smiling Karka started making his way back to the Excalibur.
The shuttle came in over the landing bay; it was going to be tight - the craft was at an odd angle to the ground, verging on what Psonoir may have called the acute, except that it was acute in all three axes of the spherical coordinate system. "Pilot... You realise we're nose-diving if you decide to hit the accelerator?"
"I know... I'm trying," Karka replied, squinting in concentration at the overlaid graphics on the forward viewer, the orange glow from them showing what correction in pitch and roll he should make to get himself aligned for a level ship, 20o glide slope descent towards the bay in its circular pit. He repositioned his hands over the attitude controls...
Rolling it hard to the left in an effort to correct the attitude by, as it were, turning into the slide, the shuttle actually flipped upside down; now in a premeditated move, before the unfortunate inversion, he applied forward thrust. The thruster ports ignited, shining bright piercing azure, and the craft was propelled forwards right into the landing bay's surrounding structure at its second storey level, crashing through transparent aluminium windows, Karka and the instructor shielding themselves instinctively before the simulator automatically shut down, the pixellated view of the splintering wreckage on the screen before him hung as if in freeze-frame now fading out to black.
There was a great deal of sighing. The instructor input the commands to reset the simulation, looking tiredly and not quite sympathetically at Karka.
He made his way to the bridge, taken aback slightly at the place's new layout. They're progressing faster than we thought, friend, he thought, imagining a conversation with Lirwa as he took the engineering console. "Where's Unwin?" he asked the engineer standing. He was on R&R, apparently, last spotted walking, or rather tottering, out of his third consecutive bar on S16's small promenade.
About to settle into his work, Psonoir noticed a blue-uniformed Vulcan standing on the upper deck. He stood and approached, extended a hand with the back of it presented to the Vulcan Ensign and bowed (after the manner of the humans of the colony which was his 'official' birth place in Starfleet records; it was of course part of his cover story).
"You are new here aren't you, Ensign? Lieutenant Commander Karka Psonoir, Chief Engineer. It is agreeable to make your acquaintance."
"Is this thing bigger ?" he asked.
"I don't think so." T'Seng replied grinning at his expression, as he turned to the 'window' eyeing it from top to bottom, left to right before shaking his head and going to the Center Seat, which still hadn't been fixed into place, but was seemingly dumped to the left out of the way ... Dropping into it, trying hard not to topple backwards as he realised the thing wasn't bolted down, he took a PADD from the Yeoman, who had apparently been waiting to give it to him, wondering vaguely if the Commander needed to lay down and rest.
It was information on crew re-assignments along with details of those transferring off the ship. He signed off on the information and handed it back to the young Yeoman.
Daniel noticed Karka stepping from the turbo-lift, his expression something similar to what his own must have been like. He walked to the Engineering Station and spoke with one of his staff:
"Where's Unwin ?"
"On the 'Base Commander." the man replied, about to move to the secondary engineering Station and transfer what he was doing over, but Psonoir told him to remain where he was. Dan got up, albeit tentatively, and approached him. Waiting while he introduced himself to the new Councillor .....
"Problems ?" he asked.
"No, well, I'll need to speak to Unwin, before anyone else gives him the news." Karka said, heading for the turbo-lift.
"I gather you are staying aboard, re-assignment from the Charon." Dan commented as they neared the 'lift, "Lieutenant Unwin is a bloody good Engineer, I intend to recommend his promotion with all due alacrity, and while I won't have any real say in the matter, i would hope that he is considered for a position as Chief Engineer as soon as one becomes available."
< tag : Karka >
He turned to T'Seng, was was trying not to get trampled by the two Maintenance Personnel pulling the Command seat into position.
"I'm going over to the Star Base. You have the Conn Chief." he said, stepping into the turbo-lift recently vacated by Psonoir ... he wasn't sure as to 'why' he was going over, but thought he just needed a break from things for an hour, maybe grab a drink and a bite to eat. He headed for his quarters and changed out of his uniform before heading for the tunnel ..........
Karka turned away from the new Counselor, the Vulcan having introduced himself, and made his way over to the science station. Half way there he paused, smiled to himself as he did an about to turn and went back over to the port side - how easy it was to forget that he had been and again was the chief engineer of the Excalibur.
He felt that his time on the Charon - what little of it there had been and how fraught it had been - had engrained the science position into him, along with the need to be at that console during those crucial moments at the end of the last assignment facing the augment-manned Triaud ships. Adding to that his natural aptitude with science as much as with the field of engineering, he felt almost at home there, as much as this century would allow him to feel that way. It was fortunate then that the Admiral had offered him a second option...
With these thoughts on his mind and the need to inform Unwin - drunk as he may be (and thus unkindly he may be in receiving the news from anyone else other than his chief) - he made for the turbolift. Schirra joined the clearly preoccupied engineer and Psonoir explained the situation.
"... I intend to recommend his promotion with all due alacrity, and while I won't have any real say in the matter, i would hope that he is considered for a position as Chief Engineer as soon as one becomes available," Schirra finished.
Karka cleared his throat, "Well, sir..." the turbolift arrived, Karka gesturing that he thought Dan might like to join him for a short time, but Schirra declined. Thus Karka suggested the conference room, "For reasons of confidentiality," he explained. They entered. "Commander. I've already informed the Commodore of this... The Admiral who told me of my reassignment to the Excalibur offered me a second option, that, coming from the Charon, I could take the role of Chief Science Officer on the Excal on a permanent basis. He said that if I chose this option Lieutenant Unwin would become first choice for taking the CEO position. And... well, I..." Karka coughed.
"Then what I've said about Unwin has made up your mind to switch to science?" Schirra said quietly, wondering if he was actually going to get a statement of intent out of Karka.
"Yes, sir. After giving Unwin the news of his likely promotion to my former position I'm going back to the Admiral to inform him I accept the offer of a switch to science."
"Talk about killing two birds with one stone..." Schirra laughed. Karka looked askance. "You know that expression, surely?" he asked.
"Ah," Karka smiled, "Yes, of course." He scolded himself internally, imagining Lirwa - the human expert - tutting and shaking his head 'back' in the 29th century or wherever he was. "Unwin will be promoted to Lieutenant Commander, so I'm told."
<Tag Dan possibly>
He headed back out to the turbolift, "Deck 17," he said and gripped the device on the wall.
* * * * *
Unwin had sobered up enough by now, but it didn't dampen his raucous celebration on learning from Karka of his likely promotion and appointment as Excal CEO. "Alright, sit down... The XO thinks very highly of you, it wouldn't do to change his impression wouldn't it?" Karka said jokingly. Unwin nodded and returned to his seat. They were in a cafe opposite Starbase 16's largest and busiest bar. "You've come on leaps and bounds, Unwin, since the nervous Ensign I remember at the bridge engineering station on my first assignment on the Excal. You could hardly speak to the Commodore in anything other than the regs' recommended vocabulary."
"Oh, don't remind me... I was greener than..."
"Yes, well. Congratulations are in order." Karka sipped at his coffee and sat back, taking in the sights of the promenade.
"Greetings Commodore I'm Snil and I'm sorry to be impolite but my shields are a little shaken and I dare not touch you" he said.
Aly blinked twice, clearly she was still more tired than she had thought, she dropped her hand and returned the salute. "Peace and Long Life. My apologies Ensign, I do know better than that.You were far from impolite" She said in precisely phrased if a little rusty Vulcan. It was nice to have an excuse to use her language skills. "Welcome to the Excalibur", she repeated.
Tag: Snil
"You have been assigned quarters on deck 3," Crewman Wilding will show you. She gestured at the young woman who dutifully headed for the corroridor to show the new officer to his quarters.
Aly stayed in the airlock to continue greeting the new arrivals. An Andorian sensor tech gave her another opportunity to flex her linguistic skills. She wondered about having a Counsellor on board, with the things they did and the things they did there was certainly a need for the crew to have some sort of outlet. After the last mission and the difficulties she was still having suggested that she put herself on the Counsellor's patient list. Of course in order to talk about things even semi-coherently she would need to work through some of them herself and deal with Ryat's reactions to things. Ryat hadn't had that exciting an existence prior to her and didn't always react to the craziness that was inherent Starfleet in the way Alyana would expect. She was still learning.
"Yes Sir. After giving Unwin the news of his likely promotion to my former position I'm going back to the Admiral to inform him I accept the offer of a switch to Science."
"Talk about killing two birds with one stone ..." Schirra laughed. Karka looked askance, "You know that expression, surely ?" Dan asked.
"Ah," Karka smiled, "Yes, of course .... Unwin will be promoted to Lieutenant Commander, so I'm told."
"Yes, he will, and truth be told his promotion is long overdue, thus my wanting to put the recommendation in myself. Obviously I had no idea regarding your news." Dan said, then bidding the Engineer, or rather, soon to be 'former' Engineer farewell, he headed for his quarters and then the Star Base .....
~~~~~
Passing the Commodore he informed her that the pandemonium was running to some sort of schedule, and that Chief T'Seng was currently Bridge Officer ... She thanked him and continued her 'welcome' of the new Officers and crew. As he walked off towards the nearby bank of turbo-lifts, he turned back to look his Commanding Officer. As far as he was aware, it was practically unheard-of for a CO to play host to new crew, it made him wonder what she was doing, maybe it was something she, or Star Fleet were trying out, make the newbies welcome et cetera. Shaking his head he stepped onto the turbo-lift and requested the Promenade ....
The Star Base wasn't large, if compared to the much larger designs, and especially the one in geosynchronous orbit above San Francisco, Earth. He exited the 'lift on the Promenade and began to walk clockwise. The 'prom consisted of all manner of outlets, from clothing, to religion, to bars, restaurants, and a myriad or other obscure establishments. It was only nineteen thirty hours, so the place was hardy bustling. He found what looked like a relatively quiet bar and entered. It was seemingly occupied by only two other patrons so he found a table and accessed the menu on the table screen:
"What can I get you ?" he looked up to see a young woman, obviously the bars waitress looking down at him.
"Erm, I was looking for ...." he said, scanning the menu quickly, "Do you have Brandy ?, and I mean the real stuff, not some synthetic mush."
"I 'might' have something under the bar, for, special occasions, let me go look." She vanished from the table and walked behind the bar, the Proprietor, an Andorian, approach her as she was looking and spoke, glancing at his table several times as he did so. The girl stood up, bottle in hand but the man said something to her and she shook her head. Daniel, not one to meddle in other peoples affairs, got up and approached the bar:
"Is there a problem, I don't want to get this young girl into trouble." he said, but the man completely ignored him and continued to berate his waitress, "Excuse me ... But shouldn't you be doing this out of earshot of your, clientele ?" the owner turned to face him with a lass than friendly expression welded to his face. He placed both large hands on the bar and glared at Schirra. Dan raised his eyebrows, somewhat amused at the likely escalation of the situation, he stepped back from the bar, arms out to his sides, wondering if the proprietor actually wanted to make this confrontation physical.
"How I deal with my staff, is my business, fella."
"Never said it wasn't, but you seem to have taken exception to her providing me with the drink I requested. I didn't ask for Romulan ale, I asked for an old Earth drink. You chewing her out over my request kind of makes it my business too. All you had to do was tell her there was none of the requested drink available, not rip her to pieces in front of you obviously discerning clientele, she would have come back and I would have selected an alternative beverage, I hardly calls for you reaction, OK. In fact, I've lost the desire for a drink, so you can get back to your brooding and I'll be going elsewhere." he said, turning to leave.
"You'll stand there until I am done." the man said. Dan was almost laughing at the complete absurdity of the situation now, he waved,his back still to the man when the girl suddenly shouted a warning. he turned in time to see the Andorian almost upon him ! ... Twisting he side-stepped the mans grasp, but the Andorian was quick, he spun and reached for Schirra, grasping one arm and aiming a fist, Dan deflected the blow and landed two to his kidney region in quick succession, dropping the man to his knee. The Andorian was reaching behind him, knife, phaser, Dan didn't have time to debate it, he slammed a fist into mans face, knocking him unconscious as Security arrived, they took hold of Schirra and the now semi-conscious Andorian as the waitress came over:
"It wasn't his fault Officer." she said, pointing to Schirra.
"None of your concern now Ma'am." the Lieutenant said, turning his attention to the Andorian, "Koval, this was your last chance. You'll be deported back to that little blue planet of yours for this."
"Lieutenant, if I may ..." Daniel began, but the man cut him off:
"As for you ... BRIG !" Dan could see someone entering the pub as the Lieutenant began to pull him towards the door, he was thankfull it was Lysia T'Seng:
"Explain to this, Officer, who I am will you." he said, exasperatedly.
"Never seen him before." T'Seng said, face impassively neutral, then spoke again as Schirra was practically dragged off, "Oh, wait, I remember now ... He is Commander Daniel Schirra ... Star Fleet Intelligence ......." The Lieutenant looked from his prisoner, to T'Seng, then back again, before motioning to one of his men, who approached and held out a Palm Scanner:
"Hand." he said, holding out the device, eyes locked on his detainee while the device did it's job.
"Identification confirmed." the man said, stepping back. The Lieutenant retained his grip for a long moment, before finally releasing Schirra.
"Apologies, Commander." he said, making an attempt to come to attention as Dan straightened his jacket, "There will be no charg ....."
"Thank you Lieutenant." he said, glancing at the Andorian, who was being led away, "You've had problems with him before I assume ?"
"Too many, and this was his last .... With your permission, Commander, I'll see to his processing." The man turned and left as the young girl approached:
"Brandy." she said, holding out a glass.
"One for my friend here, and get yourself one." Daniel said as they re-entered the bar, "So what will happen to this place now the owner has gone ?"
"It reverts back to me. I'd taken a loan from him once, and this was the collateral. He raised the interest beyond my means and thus took the bar. With him gone it's mine again. Take a seat, I'll get the drinks. These are on me." she said.
"You get into this kind of trouble every time you drink, Sir ?" Lysia asked, a wry grin on her face ..........

At the commodores words he visibly relaxed, it was nice to hear his own language even if it was a little stiff, he appreciated the gesture. "thank you commodore " he bow a little and nodded to the young woman and followed her, it would be nice to have a little time to him self before everyday life started up again. He look around with interest, maybe he would take a stroll around the ship after meditation just to get a feel of it all. When he had thanked his guide he closed the door and leaned against it with a sigh, this was going to be a little harder then he had anticipated, the ship was enormous and all those people, but he would deal with it just as he always had.
A couple of hours later he felt a little more in control and dared to re-enter the outside of his new quarters. As Snil wandered the halls, he found the rec. room and the mess hall, both nice to know were was. he had greeted a couple of people one of them was the Chief Engineer a, in Snils opinion, very polite man. After an hour of looking a round he found the sick bay a place he hoped his job would mostly keep him out of, he wondered were he would do his work and if it would be closer to his quarters. Snil hoped that he would be needed here on Excalibur, his last job had been for lack of other words boring, the small vessel had not been the most dangerous place to be, so most of his patients had been a collection of (uhh I'm so in love with .... inset name and I don't know what to do, I'm feeling under appreciated and finally.... the space is so big and empty it makes me scared) he had dealt with all of this as well as one could, but after a time he had longed after the assistant job he had on earth. After another half hour he returned to his quarters to read and prepare, people would no doubt find him if he was needed. He decided he would locate some food when time was either in the mess hall of the ship or down on the base maybe the base would be most interesting after the hours of quiet.

Finding a table out of the newly acquired 'limelight' Danial and Koni sat, waiting while their new host brought over the drinks ...
"Let's drop the rank while in civilian clothing, OK Chie ... Ms T'Seng." Daniel said.
"Koni."
"OK ... Koni," Dan said, returning the smile, "So how are you finding the Excalibur so far ?" he asked as the drinks arrived.
"Oh, it's usually the biggest thing over there." she replied, laughing at her own joke. he realised he was going to enjoy her company. After a couple more drinks and a bite to eat, he needed to get back to the ship. thanking her for the company he stood and turned away, then almost as an afterthought, turned back and took a small mahogany box from his pocket. He placed it on the table and slid it over to Lysia, telling her she couldn't touch it until he had left. he grinned at the sudden childish frustration on her face as her eyes flicked between him and the box.
"See you later." he said .......
Two Hours Later ::
Back on board the Excalibur he went to his quarters to change. checking his screen he could see a reply from his earlier recommendation. Opening it, he smiled and asked the computer the current location of Commander Psonoir .... Entering the Officers Lounge, he could see his friend sat at one of the tables.
"Mind if I join you ?" he asked, and receiving a nod he took the chair opposite, "I have some news, though to be honest, I think it should be the Commodore who tell's you, 'officially' anyway."
"Go on ...." Karka prompted.
"First off, your Deputy Chief, Unwin, I never knew his name was Mark by the way, has been promoted to Lieutenant Commander and appointed Chief Engineer." Daniel said, watching the man as he waited, "As for you ... Your Department transfer request to Chief Science Officer has also been approved. Both effective immediately, and one other piece of fortune, though I'm not too sure she will see it like that ..... Lysia T'Seng, has been promoted."
"Oh, I was under the impression that as a Master Chief Petty Officer, she couldn't go any higher without attending the Academy. so how did you swing that nugget ?"
"I didn't .... Though I did 'suggest' she hold a rank commensurate with her position." he shrugged.
"Oh please, do keep me in suspense." Karka said, in mock consternation.
"Well, I half expected to be ignored, but apparently she's making an impression, and apparently, my recommendation wasn't the first Command received .... So she will start her first Duty Shift tomorrow as a Full Lieutenant. It's going to be classed as a Field Promotion, and at some point in the future she 'will' need to attend the Academy, if just to get her Merits, but the promotion is genuine." he finished.
"You're joking." Psonoir said, impressed, but decidedly happy for the young Officer.
"Nope, she would have seen the pips by now. iIleft the box sitting on the table in front of her then got the hell out." he said almost laughing at the memory of her expression, "In all honesty, the promotion is more than deserved. Though we might have released the tiger." Dan said grinning, "She was vocal enough as a Non-Comm, so there's no telling if we'll get a word in during briefings from here on in. Anyway, I wanted to let you know the score re changes, no doubt the Commodore will want to tell you herself." he said, getting up.
"Dan ... Thank you."
"No problem." he said, heading out of the Officers Lounge ..........

Karka sat at the table a while longer before getting up and pouring himself a drink from the side cabinet. A security officer came up alongside him. Glancing at the man, Karka asked, "Where's Lieutenant Hearan?"
"In the shuttlebay, sir. You're being reassigned to Science, I understand?"
Karka rolled his eyes, "Word travels fast." Even when no word should've initially been put out, he thought. "What's Hearan doing in the shuttlebay?" Apparently he was overseeing some refits on the phaser banks and torpedoes of two of the shuttlecraft, making sure the engineers didn't mistake a nozzle for a power cell and things of that ilk. The man had previously been an engineer on the Excalibur, one of Karka's officers until he'd decided to take a security team leader position in the 'other' group of red-shirted officers - thus Hearan could lay some claim to being able to tell the current batch of engineers where they may be going wrong.
Deciding not to disturb Hearan's work (he'd been intending to find out if his former underling wished for a session of anbo-jitsu - in its early form in this century of course - in the rec room gymnasium), he headed back to the Starbase to locate an establishment offering a decent meal - they were few and far between on the promenade of the rather small Starbase 16.
He considered en route that he had much more in common with Hearan than he'd initially, had in fact always thought: both of them were now out of the engine room, both were more than sufficiently cross-skilled between engineering and the professions of their respective departmental destinations.
* * * * *
Ten minutes later he was sitting in a cramp but cosy, almost rustic in its decor, eatery, together with four other Excalibur crewmembers: Unwin, Totorski, Jan'Kres and Mirrus. Their table was jammed into a corner, and with the close proximity of other clientele it made the atmosphere slightly claustrophobic, nevertheless three of them looked out on an open window that offered a fine panoramic view of the promenade; Unwin and Totorski sat the other side, obscuring the window slightly, looking into the establishment.
"The Caesar salad, please," Karka ordered for the starter. Strange humans still use such names for their food, he thought; such titles alluded to what may be called branding or product labelling in the old world economy. Then again, it was Lirwa who was the expert, as Lirwa so often reminded his, in his words, foolhardy friend Karka who liked to tamper with the timeline - with his own and the several nearest anyway. It was his worldline, his existence if one willed; if it should come to a halt in one, Karka could rest assured it would be preserved for him in some other body, another version of himself who would look very different, not having assumed the identity of a human in 23rd century Federation space posing as coming from a Federation colony world with some odd customs.
If Lirwa, wherever and whenever he was, was truly the expert, he was showing it in a rather odd way: he was increasingly these days showing himself intransigent in not leaving the passage of time corresponding to the Wave. How could one be an expert on, and a researcher in, old Earth if one didn't leave the 29th century and/or thereabouts?
"So Unwin, you have your orders already?" he asked his former assistant - they both knew he had, the question was for the benefit of their company.
Congratulations were showered on Unwin as their starter was served, Karka picking at his salad undecidedly. "Oh, do you know we also have a new Counselor on board? A Vulcan, by all accounts."
"By all accounts? You met him Karka," Unwin said.
"I think we should invite him over." Karka opened his communicator, "Ensign Snil, this is Lieutenant Commander Psonoir. Would you care to join us on the Starbase for lunch? We are at the IX Legio restaurant on the promenade."

He had seen nothing of Commodore Ryat since he came back aboard, so assumed she was on the Star Base .... Looking at the chronometer, he realised he had spent most of the day, and evening, watching an almost endless stream of Technicians dashing around the ship as if their very lives depended upon their completing their assigned tasked with all due haste, yet he knew the 'Grafters' as they were affectionately nicknamed, and rushing wasn't one of their stronger points. Not that the ship was needed elsewhere, thankfully ...
He decided, purely on a whim, that he would eat on the 'Base rather than in the ships refectory, the food, hopefully, would be much better. Handing the Conn to a young, nervous-looking Lieutenant, he headed for the gangway ... Ensign Snil was meters ahead of him and he vaguely wondered if he too was going to eat. He almost shouted the Vulcan, but decided to let him be for the evening. The new councillor hadn't had time to settle into his new role, and certainly wasn't used to the ship and her crew yet, so maybe he was, exploring ...
Stepping off the turbo-lift on the Promenade, he decided to go back to the scene of his confrontation with the rather nasty hoodlum, now whiling away his remaining hours in the Brig. Entering, he could see it was busier than earlier, 'maybe news had gotten around' he thought with a wry grin as he spotted the girl from earlier:
"Glutton for punishment are you ?" she asked.
"No, just hungry." Daniel replied, realising he actually liked this young woman, "Are you still doing food ?"
"Oh I'm sure I can have something knock-up for a gallant Officer." she said, taking his hand and leading him to one of the quieter booths, "Sandwiches, or would you prefer something hot ?" she said, a cheeky Irish brogue appearing.
"I'll leave it in your hands." he said, taking the brandy from the waitress who suddenly appeared, and that he couldn't remember ordering. As he waited his Communicator chirped:
=^= Schirra =^=
=^= Commander .. Would it be a bad time to meet with you ? =^=
=^= Koni ? .. .. No .. I'm at 'The Craic' .. On the promenade .. You can't miss it =^=
=^= OK =^= the Comm snapped off and he looked at the device before putting it on the table, moments later T'Seng arrived. Ignoring the waitress, she dropped onto the bench seat and glared at him:
"Problem ?" he asked, completely ignoring her change of uniform from Enlisted to Officer.
"THIS ! ... This ! .... This is my problem, Commander ... If I had wanted to become an Officer, I would have gone through the normal channels, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that earlier ?"
"Nothing to do with me." Dan said, shrugging, "Though, given you 'ARE' running Tactical, it seems fitting that you hold the rank ... Besides, you can always turn the Academy down when the time comes, hell what can they do, demote you ?" he said with a smile as his meal arrived. Lysia asked if his guest wanted something, and Koni had to admit the Irish Potato stew did smell superb, she said yes, then relaxed somewhat, her initial temper tantrum done with.
"I just passed the IX Legio restaurant, further down, a group of Excalibur Officers are in there having a good time. Any reason you're not with them ?"
"I wasn't invited." he said as her food arrived, pondering if that was where the Councillor was heading. he shrugged inwardly, maybe 'not invited' was too strong a phrase, given there hadn't actually been an arranged meeting. most Officers and crew tended to frequent the same bars and eateries when visiting Star Bases. he was relatively new to the ship, so wouldn't be expected to know that, "OK, I have to admit here. I did use a little of my limited influence, to persuade Command to agree to the promotion, but BEFORE YOU START OFF AGAIN, you DO deserve it, others thought so too, or you wouldn't be wearing that outfit, so relax and accept the pips." .....
~~~~~~~~~~
It was almost twenty three hundred when they finished their meal and drinks. Thanking Lysia for the evening they left the eatery and began to head back to the ship, passing the IX Legio restaurant on the way. Dan looked in and could see three of the Excalibur crew still sat at a table. Karka was one of those present. he wondered if he should go in and join them for the proverbial 'nightcap' ..........
The restaurant was still busy, now virtually transformed into a bar, many of the tables pushed back to the walls or taken into strange secluded spaces by the hurrying staff; up impossible staircases, into cupboards that seemed to contain spaces much larger than the floor area of the establishment would've allowed, and in a thousand other nooks. One nook still held three Excal officers from earlier in the day, with the tables arrayed much as they had been, that is jammed up close to the walls with the chairs in between near-impossible to get into.
Karka found himself arm-wrestling. At that moment Commander Schirra wandered by, seen by the Hybrudean out the window over Unwin's shoulder, "Daniel!" he called, and found his arm levered back, the back of his hand now flat against the coarse-grain wood of the table. "Ah!" He rubbed his hand, "Lieutenant, you cheated," he said faux-morosely.
"Lieutenant Commander," Unwin corrected.
Karka was tempted to tell him, not until he was given his new uniform, but Schirra - apparently having already spotted them before Karka's distraction and subsequent losing of the arm wrestle - having stood there seemingly undecided was now making for the entrance of the IX Legio.
Jan'Kres excused himself to go upstairs for a moment as Schirra reached the table. "What will it be, Commander?" Unwin asked, Karka unsure if it was wise to drop ranks at this time and thus thinking that Unwin had done well and played on the safe side. Not that the Intel officer was averse to being called by his actual name. It seemed indeed that Schirra was quite relaxed.
"I heard you went back to the place where you had your... disagreement," Karka commented as the Commander decided whether he would like a drink. "Did T'Seng take her promotion well?" he asked drolly.
<Tag Dan>
As Jan'Kres arrived back a Klingon left the bar and followed behind the junior Operations officer, making his way towards their table. Karka had to wonder what a Klingon was doing on a Starfleet installation well within Federation space, and why he hadn't been attracting attention. Of course the Klingon Empire and Federation were yet to go to war over possession of Organia - a war averted by the intervention of the Organians who at that time had taken on corporeal form on the planet that was in dispute - however the absence of an atmosphere of hostility was still puzzling. It was precisely that kind of hostility which had gone a long way to provoking such a war in the first place.
"Excuse me, fellow," Unwin was saying to the Klingon as Ensign Jan'Kres took his seat and the Klingon persisted in standing behind his chair, "Can you please step back, return to your drink, whatever it is you are... imbibing," the new CEO cleared his throat, having lost his voice for a moment.
The Klingon showed his teeth, repeating after Unwin slowly, "Excuse me. Please." He grinned toothily and began making gurgling guttural sounds - laughter.
"Which ship are you with?" Karka said irritatedly. "The BortaS'tej? I thought it was a freighter, not part of the Klingon Defence Force."
The Klingon growled and threw aside Crewman Mirrus's empty chair - the young man had left a couple hours earlier. The noise level around the restaurant dropped significantly as most in the establishment turned to peer into the corner in which the unhappy exchange was taking place. Then before Karka could react, an enraged Jan'Kres stood up, turning rapidly and stared into the Klingon's yellow eyes, mere inches from the warrior's face. If it came to it, Karka felt confident by a burst of consciousness acceleration he could beat the Klingon for agility. He glanced at Schirra, "Twice in less than a day? Our ship's going to be banned from the station at this rate."
Dan looked at Koni, grinning, then walked into IX Legio ...
"I heard you went back to the place where you had your ... Disagreement." Karka commented as the Commander decided whether he would like a drink. "Did T'Seng take her promotion well ?" he asked drolly.
"You can ask her yourself, she's bringing the drinks over now." Dan said, eyeing the seemingly irate Klingon but choosing not to interfere. Koni came towards them, her teal tunic highlighting the broad silver stripe around the cuff of each arm. she looked less than amused, but at least not as 'vocal' about her imposed promotion.
"Lieutenant." Unwin said, raising his glass.
"Commander." Koni replied, copying the salute as the Klingon again decided he was being hard done by. Karka turned his attention to the Centurion while Daniel relaxed outwardly and took a long sup of his ale, apparently a 'stout' called Guinness, almost black with a white head. He eyed T'Seng, who pleaded innocence, saying the bartender suggested it. Actually, Dan decided he liked the drink and took a second deep swig. Koni too drank from her glass, same drink, same glass size, no half measures for this woman ...
"The The BortaS'tej ...... Her Commander once challenged me." Dan said to Koni as a casual remark, but knowing the Klingon would hear it, and he did, turning from the glaring Jan'Kres to look at Schirra, "Oh, no need to worry, he recovered very quickly. Anyway, don't mind me, I can see you are, busy." he said, holding his hands in the air careful not to spill his 'Stout' before turning away and facing Koni, who was now also watching the two Klingon's at a nearby table in her peripheral vision.
"Twice in less than a day ? ... Our ship's going to be banned from the station at this rate." Karka said, rising to his feet.
"Ensign Snil. I'm glad to see you are meeting other members of the crew." Schirra said, seeing the young Vulcan standing off to one side as if trying not to be directly involved in proceedings. Snil merely nodded.
Surprisingly, Daniel didn't even see where the first punch originated from. He half suspected Jan'Kres had taken advantage of the distraction to set himself ready, then as the Klingon began to return his gaze to the man he was already in full swing, and he needed to be, as the Klingon, while shaken by the unexpected blow, didn't go down immediately, but fell backwards, crashing into the table behind him. Dan was already looking for somewhere to put his drink down as his head impacted the table. He managed to see Koni, slamming two closed fist blows in quick succession into one of the previously seated Klingon Officers throats as he regained his senses.
"The drinks, as well as the repair bill are on you, you know that don't you." he said to Karka as the Science Officer was knocked off balance for a second before he reacted .......
Ten Minutes Later ::
The bar, minutes earlier occupied with quiet couples and those wanting a nightcap, was now a shambles, and practically overrun with Security Personnel !
Star Fleet Officers, Klingon Defence Force Officers, Civilians, and Guests, were all tending their wounds ... While the bar owner was practically demanding the cost of the Star Base to refurbish the bar and fixtures and fittings. Dan was having a cut to his lip and a heavily bruised shoulder tended to when he noticed Koni, a bruise was rapidly developing over her right eye, but he knew that whoever had inflicted the black eye, he suffered much more for their presumption that they could beat her in a one to one, Klingon or no Klingon. He grinned at her, painfully, and she smiled. He could see Karka and Mark (?) Unwin, both having come better off in their bouts, the four Klingon's ... 'Hold on, there were only three originally' he thought, but couldn't be sure, were refusing treatment of any kind, hardly a surprise ...
Dan wondered vaguely if he could hide this, fracas, from Commodore Ryat, then decided that given what the Excalibur crew had gone through, they fully deserved the blow-out, and thanks to the ever irritable Klingon's, they got it ! ..........
the room was dark except for the small lamp on the bedside table, Snil sat up and looked around the room he hadn't planed on falling asleep. He yawned and wondered what had woken him when a small but insistent beeping made him look at the communicator on his desk, he frowned who would contact him he didn't really know anyone yet, but on the other hand it could be important. Snil sat down and listened, interestingly enough it was an invitation to lunch with Commander Psonoir and some others, probably some friends or crew-mates. " commander?" he blinked " lunch, yes thank you that would be agreeable, I will meet you there then." Snil looked a little confused at the communicator, some one had just asked for his company, that was not something that happened often, not that it bothered him, not much did, but he found it interesting. He made himself presentable, and quickly made his way to the station and the promenade, it didn't take long to locate the IX Legio, he wend in but stooped, he suddenly realised that he only knew what the commander looked like, and he couldn't see him he did see some people in the right uniform, so he made his way over there.
After he had greeted the people at the table for it was indeed the right one, he observed them more than talk to them, but he answered when spoken to of cause. After lunch he bid them goodbye, as he didn't see much reason to stick around he had his meal, and he had promised to be back later when the restaurant became a bar, he didn't relay know what to do at a bar but then again he might find out later. Snil walked around the base for a couple of hours sins he needed to buy some things before the ship departed again.
When he returned the bar was even more packet with people he found it a little intimidating but quickly pushed it away with a small sigh, he had only just arrived at the table when the man who had nodded to him when he first arrived, said something he didn't really hear so he just inclined his head and hoped that the man would be satisfied with that. He observed the skirmish with the Klingon, he didn't see the point in getting involved unless it was pressingly necessary and it looked like the others could handle it. Ten minutes later he could see that he might have miscalculated a little in that regard sins the bar and most of his crew mates had been damaged in the fight, he had with a lot of difficulty necessary in staying out of it, though it he had had some close calls with chairs and a bar guest that just happened to fly in his direction.
Karka had done his best to avoid becoming entangled in the worst of the fighting, merely using two bursts of consciousness acceleration when the situation called for it. Once to outmanoeuvre a Klingon and escape from the 'epicentre' of the combat, and a second time where his engineered mind had, in its speeding up of how it perceived events both external and internal, only been able to match the rate of perception of a Vulcan:
He had amusingly darted out of the way of a flying civilian at the same time as Ensign Snil, as if the two of them were performing a synchronised dance act, with the hurt flying civilian who'd been sitting at the table nearest them the third part of their routine - he was the one who often required the services of an auto-suture, the medical implement on this occasion applied to his face after it'd struck the bar.
Avoiding a night in the station's cells, in part due to the Klingons cooperation but also because of a forgiving security officer, Karka and the others were able to negotiate their way out of the establishment. "Ensign," he nodded to Snil as the Vulcan fell in alongside him, "I promise you it isn't always like this on shore leave." That was mostly true.
Unwin stifled a laugh and started walking away from them, "I'll be on the Excalibur. I have my report on the engines to submit to the Commodore."
Karka nodded and turned back to the Vulcan, a question occurring to him unbidden, "Did you study psychotherapy before the Academy, Snil?"
<Tag Snil>
Schirra and Jan'Kres had caught up, "I believe that will be enough for one evening," Psonoir observed, "I can't expect the BortaS'tej to remain here for much longer. Either our opponents will be reporting to their officers their glorious victory or they'll be returning to sulk silently in their quarters. Speaking of which, I'll take my leave, sir," he stood to attention before Schirra and nodded to Snil and Jan'Kres.
* * *
He brightened the lights in his quarters and cast off his uniform jacket, leaving it to lie on the back of a chair. The Starbase temporary quarters assigned to him were well equipped, perhaps even slightly larger than his room on the Excalibur - still no bath though.
Resting in the chair, his mind wandered towards the future that was seen along the perceptual networks that opened up in his vision, projected over his sight as if it were a physical object - this was his mind's non-human architecture splayed out before him, in the same manner that it would if he were in any Hybrudean archive at its nerve centre, hovering near the top of the shining white atrium in something that approximated the lotos position.
Lirwa had found the connection between that particular form of Earth meditation and the Hybrudean neural-architecture reconfiguration 'enlightening' he knew, and had revealed himself in such a guise once, on the heights of a mountain whose peaks were wrapped about with mists filtered green by the false space and roof above them. Time in that place flowed in no conventional way, the experience being more akin to a serious of snapshots, flickering stills one after the other slotting into place like an early 20th century Earth image projector. Each still was separated by epochs or by a nanosecond, even by negative time where they all folded back on one another and Karka arrived at the peak before he set out.
He drifted into sleep and worked an element of his still-active conscious towards a null marker, wondering if along the highway he might encounter the vestiges, the residue of another him working its way along its own worldline. What of the future? What of an alternate path?
The chaos that followed the small fight and the way the Excalibur crew talked there way out of a possible stay in a cell, was for lack of a better word fascinating, Snil almost smiled at the descriptive explanations but caught him self in time. Outside he came to walk along side the Chief Engineer at first he didn't pay much attention to his surroundings, still caught in the happenings of the evening, but when he spoke Snil quickly looked at him, he tilted his head a little "I'm glad to here that commander I would have to much work I presume if that was the case" he paused "and if you would use my name, I believe it would make it easier to gain the trust of the crew if may name is used, it's more personal wouldn't you say?" He nodded to Unwin when he left, and answered Karkas question, he was a little confused to why he would think that " no commander, I studied Xenopsychology and medicine at the Vucan Science Academy, before I came to earth" Snil acknowledge the other two when they caught up to them "have a pleasant night" he told Karka before the man left, he thought about returning to the ship, but before he did that there was something he needed to know " commander Schirra, will there be any repercussion for the actions preformed this evening? I'm not familiar with the repercussion of a starship in this case" It wasn't that he feared for retaliations but he still wanted to know what to expct from the base or the captain, he just hoped it wouldn't be to bad, he sighed he had never in his wildest fantasies imagined that he would be associated whit a bar fight on his first evening assigned to the Excalibur.
Later when he sad down to meditate before sleep he couldn't help thinking that his time onboard this ship would be any thing but boring, if he crew metes were all like the ones he had met this night, nor would he lack patients if the reckless nature was transferred to missions as well.
"Commander Schirra, will there be any repercussion for the actions preformed this evening ? ... I am not familiar with the repercussion of a star-ship in this case." Dan grinned, it was obviously something of a shock for the newest member of the Excalibur, he stopped walking and faced the young Officer:
"You have no need to worry Ensign. There will be no further repercussions from tonight's, activities ..... We don't normally dock looking for a fight, but sometimes steam is let off."
"That's for sure." Koni T'Seng said with a wry grin.
"On occasion, the said Officers will find themselves in the Brig for the night, and be stood before the Captain the following morning, but tonight was something else." Daniel continued, trying to think of how to vocalise the previous issue but gave up, he smiled, "Rest assured Ensign, there will be nothing going on your record, besides, you were hardly the instigator of the brawl, and the Owner was more than happy with his 'compensation' despite his attitude and seemed annoyance. Have a good evening, what's left of it, Ensign." he said, tapping the man on the shoulder and receiving a look of puzzlement from the Vulcan for his efforts.
Watching the Vulcan walk away, he wondered vaguely why he had remained on the Excalibur ... After all, he 'could' have returned to his duties as an Intelligence Officer, but then .....
"Are we going to get something to eat at all tonight ?" Koni asked rhetorically.
"Yes ! ...... We'll try there." Dan said, pointing to a small café-type frontage. Entering they found a table and ordered something for what was now supper .....
Following Morning ::
Dan opened his eyes, immediately feeling the aftereffects of the copious amounts of non-synthale he had managed to consume, both during the meal with Koni, and afterwards at the bar, where the café had live music, and something called 'karaoke' ... Despite countless nudges and urging from the newly promoted T'Seng, he steadfastly refused to get out of his seat. Koni on the other hand had been more than willing to jump right in and sing. he recalled it was somewhere in the region of zero three hundred when they returned to the Excalibur, much to the amusement of the Security Officer at the tunnel to the ship. Dragging himself off the bed he hit the shower, a long shower, then took something to counteract the alcohol in his bloodstream. Dressing, he headed for the Bridge ... Apparently, commodore Ryat had spent the night on the Space Station rather than returning,nothing unusual about that, many Officers preferred a night off-ship when they could get one. He took the offered PADD, showing the progress of the upgrades and refits the ship was undergoing. The list seemed endless, but he knew that Star Fleet Engineers and Technicians were good at their jobs, and the list would dwindle quickly.
"Can someone get me a black coffee ?" he asked no-one in particular ..........
Karka left Starbase 16's procurement and storage area having fulfilled the second part of his task, that which came after being given official notice of his departmental change by the base's personnel office: donning his new uniform. He smoothed down the blue shirt and decided it looked reasonably good, heading now for a subsidiary docking ring where a shuttlecraft was waiting for him.
"Commander, it's only for six hours. You'll be back here in no time."
Karka kept a frown from his face, "It's not the length of time I'm worried about, sir. It's merely that I don't know the doctor, and... am currently in a training program to improve my piloting ability." He coughed, "Accordingly, I don't believe I'm best suited for this assignment. I cannot guarantee the safety of this civilian from Mitchell's Star Colony."
An orders pad was scraped off the cabinet by the Admiral and passed into his hand, "Have a good time, Commander."
The shuttle pushed its way out of dock and into the outer blackness, making rendezvous with a requisitioned Gorn freighter some 50 million km from the station. Bringing the craft alongside and wincing slightly as he initially found himself off longitudinal axis with respect to the freighter, Karka activated autopilot and ran his hands over a second panel, flipping switches and pulling a lever. He watched the man coalesce in golden waves in the aft section of the craft.
Karka had moved to the secondary console by the time they reached the planetoid, the man in the pilot's chair as they made orbit despite the complete lack of appreciable gravity. Karka looked at the man, Doctor Ahri Maltis, out of the corner of his eye, smiling as he accessed the sensor grid. For a fellow Mitchell Star colonist (Karka's home planet in accordance with his assumed identity; no good telling everyone he was from the 29th century) he wasn't like he'd imagined.
"There, got it! That's three subaquatic fish, shoals of them, in the southern hemisphere, coords -11.04 by 15.2495."
Karka checked the sensors, "Confirmed. Congratulations, Doctor." They swapped seats and he began plotting a course for the Starbase. Maltis laughed uproariously.
"Sorry, Commander... I'm not usually like this. And forgive me for not offering you the salute... It's terrible, you know, I've never let it slip in... Well, it must be 5 years." The doctor now made this salute, the Mitchell equivalent of the Earth handshake. Karka returned it, glad the man had gone first as he had trouble remembering it. "Where are you from, Mr Psonoir?"
"Lake Tlemlis," he answered, "On the northern shore. A small village called -"
"Yes," an inquisitive look came upon Maltis's face and he looked to the ceiling of the shuttle before it became evident his mind had alighted on something "Yes, of course! Sarpedon City. Quaintly and oddly named for a place of less than a thousand inhabitants," he chuckled, "Fine views from there for sure. Karka nodded, saying indeed. "I visited last summer. Let me relate to you what I hoped to see there." Of course Karka had never actually been to the Star Colony, let alone Sarpedon City; he had to admit... his curiosity was piqued.
Throughout the day, Daniel had managed to get rid of the colossal hangover. He could have taken something to counteract the alcohol instantly, but he believed in something he had heard originating from Earth's nineteen sixties of seventies, that if you can't do the time don't do the crime. He'd often wondered how many 'sayings' were from that era.
Having been informed that commodore Ryat would be on the station for the best part of the day he got to work, or rather, tried to keep out of the way of the multitude of maintenance technicians, carpenters, and a myriad of other personnel. The Excalibur's Department Heads had come to him one by one, either complaining about the chaos in their respective departments, or requesting a plethora of items and equipment they were in sudden desperate need of, or more frequently, a combination of the two, with the notable exception of Commander Psonoir ... Puzzled, he hit the Comm link on the Captain's seat:
=^= Schirra to Psonoir .. .. .. =^=
=^= Schirra to Commander Psonoir .. .. .. =^= again no reply.
"Computer. Locate Commander Karka Psonoir."
'Commander Psonoir is no longer aboard the ship.'
"I know that ..." Dan said, feeling the first twinge of his headache returning, "Where is he ?"
'Commander Psonoir departed the Star Base four hours fifty one minutes ago' the computer replied casually.
"He left the station ?"
'Please restate the question.'
"Forget it." he said, the throbbing in his temple beginning to irritate him now. rising from the center seat he left the Bridge and headed for Sick-bay .....
~~~~~
"Ahh, our champion drinker." Doctor Townes said as Dan entered, apparently his prowess with the grape had preceded him, "I'm going to take one of those proverbial stabs in the dark here, and say you want something for the headache ?"
"You're wit never fails to amuse me Doctor." he said, dropping onto a Bio-bed, "Anyone else been in here ?"
"Doctor Patient privilege I'm afraid Commander." Townes said grinning as he placed the hypo-spray against his neck and activating it, "I hear you were in 'The Craic' last night, most of it in fact. Lysia is a very good host, and you can't beat her for managing to get hold of the real thing, so to speak." he said. Dan got up and thanked the Doctor ... Heading back to the Bridge he wondered if he should consult Amanda regarding Karka's absence. Technically, the newly reassigned Science Officer had done nothing wrong, he wasn't needed at present on the ship as the modifications to his consoles and within his Department had all but been completed, but it was more a worry to Daniel as he would have expected his friend would have at least mentioned he was going off Station.
On the Bridge he sat in the Command seat and pondered. He decided to give it another few hours, then he would make further enquiries ...

It was well into the ship's afternoon when Dan had a moment to himself .... Tapping the Comm link in the armrest he tried to contact Karka ...
=^= Schirra to Commander Psonoir .. .. =^=
Nothing, he tried again with the same result then opened a comm to the Star Base command Center:
=^= Excalibur to Base Command =^=
=^= Command Center .. Lieutenant Hettul .. Go ahead Excalibur =^=
=^= I am trying to locate one of our Officers .. He was last seen on the 'base eight hours ago =^=
=^= I'm not sure how we can help you Commander Schirra .. Is it possible he enjoyed shore leave a little too much and is sleeping it off .. I'm sure he will turn up in good time Sir =^= Dan pondered the man's comment and, seeming lack of concern that someone had been missing for the best part of eight hours, but the thing that piqued his instinct for the not quite right was the fact that he had been addressed by name ... He quickly recalled their brief conversation and realised that he hadn't identified himself to the Lieutenant, so how did the man know 'who' he was speaking to ?
=^= Lieutenant .. I would appreciate it if you could patch me through to your superior =^= there was a long moments delay then someone else spoke:
=^= Commander Schirra .. I'm Commander Leech ..Duty Operations Officer .. How can I help ? =^=
=^= I'm trying to find one of the Excelibur's Officers .. Who your Lieute .. .. .. =^=
=^= As you were informed Commander .. We cannot help you .. I suggest reporting the Officer missing through official channels =^= the Comm snapped off before he could reply. Dan glared at the armrest as if it was personally causing him grief, then he got out of the Center Seat, informed Commander Unwin that he had the Conn, requested Lieutenant T'Seng meet him in the transporter room, then headed for the turbo-lift.
~~~~~
"What's going on ?" Koni said as she got into stride with him.
"Commander Psonoir was over on the Station with us last night, he's gone missing." Dan was filling her in whth his conversation when the new Councillor came around the corner, almost bumping into the two Officers, "Ensign Snil ... You were on the Station last evening, in the Irish Bar, the Criac."
"Indeed." Snil replied quickly.
"Good, you're with us." Dan said, continuing his march to the transporter room, T'Seng and Snil in close formation behind. They stepped onto the platform, the Transporter Chief surprised to see them there, "Chief, I want you to put us in the Command Center of the 'Base ..."
"Sir ?"
"Right now Chief." Dan said dangerously.
The man worked quickly, Snil looking at his Senior Officers with almost no expression on his face that belayed his inward concern about what was happening. A second later they materialised .. Daniel looked around, immediately identifying the Lieutenant he had previously spoken with by his expression. The trio walked over to him and he stood as they approached.
"I do not appreciate being cut off mid-sentence Lieutenant."
"That was my doing I'm afraid." they turned to see an elderly Admiral ..........
Snil had started the day by being called to his obligatory physical test by one of the medical staff, it hadn't been necessary in Snils opinion and he had told the man precisely that, but no matter what he said it did nothing to change the doctors mind, though he did manage to get a later appointment. Snil was pleased by this sins there was some work he needed to do before his real duties could begin. The next couple of hours went quickly with paperwork and a lot of reading Later when he arrived in sick bay at the appointed time he was greeted by a nurse or that what he thought she was, she showed him to a examination table and told him to wait, what a waist of time he could had used this time better in his room where he had all his reading materials, he grabbed the PADD he had taken with him and was soon lost to the world. He didn't get to read much before he was interrupted by a doctor or close enough to one, "as I stated earlier, this is not necessary, I had a full physical just before transferring" Snil commented the doctor just nodded "yes yes no reason to be scared" Snil frowned it was clearly that the doctor hadn't heard a word he said, so he gave up and let them do what they do best, he was of cause fit for duty. On the way back to his quarters he almost walked right in to a couple of his superiors, do to having his nose way down in his PADD. He mumbled an apology continued on his path, still completely engrossed in the text, but he turned when the commander talked, "Ensign Snil ... You were on the Station last evening, in the Irish Bar, the Criac." "Indeed." Snil replied quickly, he wondered what was happening sins they would need him before he was on regular duty, but he just shrugged and followed, things would probably be reviled in time. It did surprise him though that there destination was the command center at the base, maybe they had gotten into some trouble for the escapade last night. He looked at his companions the commander looked a little displeased it worried him a little, maybe it was something else after all. When they arrived he just followed it was now clear to him that something had happened earlier that he didn't know anything about, so he thought it wisest to just observe until he was needed
"I do not appreciate being cut off mid-sentence, Lieutenant !"
"That was my doing I'm afraid." they turned to see an elderly Admiral, "Commander Schirra, I wasn't aware that you had requested to see me, nor was I aware that i had relaxed the regulations regarding transports."
"Apologies for the 'unconventional' mode of arrival, but I felt it important enough given one of my Officers is missing, and your Staff seem somewhat, indifferent to the issue." The Admiral eyed Koni T'seng, then looked at the Vulcan Ensign, finally returning his gaze to Schirra, "Admiral Williams, may we speak in private ?" the Admiral eyed his Second in Command Commander Leech, and the group moved from the Command Center to the Admiral's Office ....
"Now Commander ...." Williams said, easing himself into his seat while Leech stood off to one side, eyeing the Excalibur Officers with obvious contempt, "I believe that allocation or reassignment, be it permanent, or of a temporary nature, is my purview, is it not ?" Daniel didn't answer, Leech was seriously annoying him.
"I was under the impression ...." Commander Leech interjected, ".... That I had informed you of the correct channels in this matter."
"Have you informed Commodore Rayt of this issue ?" he countered.
"Issue, I fail to se ...."
"Commander Psonoir was on this Star Base less than ten hours ago. He is not here now, and as his immediate Superior Officer I feel I am entitled to know if he has been reassigned, or otherwise ..." he began, but again was interrupted:
"Are you due to depart Star base sixteen, Commander ?" Leech asked, the sarcasm obvious.
"You know full well we are not ...." Daniel said, turning his full attention on the snide Commander now, "I think you had better begin to rethink how you speak to me in front of Junior Officers, and while you are at it, maybe give some thought to your attitude in general 'Commander' ... While not one to anger easily, you really don't want to be on my wrong side, I assure you."
"Gentlemen." Williams said raising his hands in mock surrender, "It is simple Commander. I asked mister Psonoir to undertake a 'task' on my behalf. My request of him was of a personal nature, and as the Commander is technically on Shore Leave, I was under no obligation to inform anyone, and I fail to see why my action warranted the attention of an Intelligence Officer, a newly promoted Lieutenant, and a newly arrived Councillor. Now, if that is all, Commander ?" Williams finished. Leech moved to the door, opening it and standing aside, he snide grin returning. Dan wanted to smack that grin right off his face but turned to the Admiral instead:
"Just one question Admiral, if I may ?" Williams nodded, "When I initially contacted Command, you knew who I was, makes me wonder ....."
"Then please feel free to 'wonder' on your own time. Good day Commander." they stepped out of the office, barely missing being hit by the closing door.
"Well, that was, unusual." Koni said as they headed for the turbo-lifts, deciding not to annoy the Admiral further by beaming away.
"Admiral Williams is known for his habit of allowing just the right amount of information to leak out to others, you should see him play poker." Schirra said as they stepped into the 'lift, "It could be just as he said, he asked for a favour and Karka obliged." Dan said, not believing a word of what he just said ..........
From long experience Alyana knew she was unlikely to be able to enjoy too much shoreleave before something demanded her attention. She had taken quarters on the base, simple so that people doing things to the ship did literally trip over her and then attempt to update her on what had been going on. It had happened before.
She settled back on the sofa with a variety of reading material. If her spoken language skills hadn't been getting much of a work out her reading skills had had even less of late. She intended to plough through as many different languages as she could before she got called that something was going on.
As it was she read four novels and one text on Vulcan history before having a long leisurely shower and turning in for the night. Yes, it was technically an early night which was possibly her mistake as she was woken out of her dreams to receive a notification that several of her crew had been involved in a brawl. She asked several questions and finding out none of them had been arrested or injured she was greatly relieved. She debated calling on the miscreants early the following morning when they were likely to be suffering as a result of their excesses the night before but decided against it. There was nothing preventing Starfleet crew on leave burning of steam that way. It wasn't something she ever wanted to hear about happening away from shoreleave and she would remind them of that later.
***** Some time later ****
Aly took a walk along the outer ring of the base looking at the stars and the other ships in dock. She was quite surprised when she stepped into the lift and found she was sharing with Dan, Ensign Snil and Lt T'Seng, all of whom seemed a littled perturbed. Well it was hard to tell in Snil's case. Maybe it was just they had their CO in a lift with them but Aly doubted it. She turned to Dan.
"What's going on?"
