[El Salvador: Main Bridge; During the Command Briefing aboard SB47]
Lieutenant Alexi Tamarov manned the bridge as Deis returned to Sickbay to lend what endurance she had remaining to the treatment of the now non-critical cases. As such it was the Russian officer who was in position to respond to the unexpected signal that came in from the previously-unoccupied Maracanda, =^=USS El Salvador, this is Commander Blakus of the USS Raven. Pardon my indiscretion. I am on the USS Maracanda, and have found a residue of thalaron in the computer core... Say, your vessel couldn't have been carrying anything like that, in storage, a medical specimen perhaps? That somehow found its way into the data stream?=^=
Tamarov furrowed his brow, taken aback for a brief moment but his training soon kicked in and he nodded to Karysta to open a response signal, "No apology needed, Commander; it's good to hear from anyone under the circumstances. Lieutenant Tamarov, current bridge officer. Just to confirm... you said thalaron residue, yes? One moment, sir; I'll check with medical." His tone of voice indicated how unlikely he thought it was that El Sal would be carrying anything that hazardous but it was only sensible to confirm, especially at the request of a superior officer who was even now at potential risk from exposure to it regardless of the origin. Alexi tapped his commbadge and spoke, =^=Bridge to Commander Irae; sorry to interrupt ma'am, but we've got an officer aboard the Maracanda picking up thalaron readings. We've been asked to confirm or deny if we might be the source via the data stream. Are sickbay systems functioning enough to give us a readout of any such specimens we might have aboard that are thalaron in nature?=^=
Tamarov grimaced and Cadet Zhegras the Tellarite at Engineering made a mental note to remember a couple of the choice words Irae used in her response that there'd bloody well better not be any such idiotic risk having been accepted aboard without her having been notified beforehand. Given the seriousness of the situation; however, she went to personally confirm via cross-reference of the medical storage logs, transporter logs, and Tamarov on the bridge had Karysta and Zhegras run scans of the data stream itself to confirm there was no thalaron transfer. Within 5 minutes of Commander Blakus' initial query, Tamarov replied to him aboard the Maracanda, "Commander Blakus, apologies for the wait, sir. We've confirmed to the best of our ability that the El Salvador is not the source of the residue you're reading. Do you need to activate the Maracanda's containment fields? We may be able to perform a minor power transfer over the link enough for you to power some of the Maracanda's minor systems."

*************************************************************************************************************************** [El Salvador: Main Bridge; Event Day 13]
Savot had returned to the El Salvador following the Command briefing aboard the Starbase. Though the merits of both bringing the El Salvador into dock and leaving her outside the station were discussed, it was left to Commodore Savot which course of action to follow. He felt that under the circumstances, with what had already transpired and the increasingly uncertain future situations that could arise, it was most beneficial to have at least 1 vessel outside the station. This was taken advantage of shortly thereafter as the El Sal shifted location in front of the traveling starbase to monitor and report on any fallback from efforts to slow the enormous construction's rotation. The vulcan captain noted that despite the rotational time to bring the damaged space doors back into view being irregular as the efforts to slow rotation were having their intended effect, every bridge member's head rose from their station to look up and into the station without fail each time it happened. He thought it probable that they took comfort in being able to see the Raven and Enzio still functioning within the starbase, and he could not blame them for seeking that small visual reassurance when it became attainable.
The Excalibur-class ship's repairs had made more than fair progress in the days since the Command briefing: 3/4 impulse power had been restored though warp drive was still at least 3 weeks away due to the damage sustained to their port nacelle; the EMH program had been successfully activated and could be sustained without fear of deactivation mid-surgery, though not all of the ship's holo-emitter's had been repaired so he was limited to only certain regions; the Cadets had proven themselves in the aftermath, assisting officers in repair tasks by performing the majority of the go-and-fetch portions themselves leaving the officers and enlisted crewmen to devote their stamina entirely to the 'meat' of the tasks at hand. The fact that the final construction months of the new El Salvador had been undertaken by her crew as well as the shipyard personnel was proving a great asset as crew familiarity with the 'guts' of their vessel made repairs as smooth as they could be under the circumstances; no time had to be taken to ascertain what personal quirks had been implemented in a given system by a stranger light years away before repairs could be initiated.
As Karysta was off-duty for the moment, recuperating with her roommate Cadet Zhegras in preparation for their next shifts, Savot himself sat at the Ops station running sensor scans. Despite years now of command, Ops would always be Savot's most comfortable duty station. Running confirmation checks of the long-range sensor telemetry he was reading, Savot had begun to initiate a hail to Starbase 47 when they hailed him first. Blinking at the coincidental timing, Savot looked up to see Admirals Gheskori and Tetsutaro that he recognized, as well as an officer to the side who met the description of the El Salvador's new intended Tactical officer he'd been told about by the Section Admiral when he'd been on-station for the briefing. Savot dipped his head slightly in a bow of acknowledgement, =^=Greetings, Admirals. How may we be of assistance?=^=
<Tag: Any in the Control Room>
Savot arched a brow, =^=Indeed, sirs. I had in fact begun to hail you regarding long-range sensor readings to see if yours concurred. We've detected a small field of micrometeoroid-scale particulates within our current trajectory; at current velocity we should enter the field in approximately 3.1 hours though our passing through it should require no more than 64 seconds. My concern is the status of the base's deflector shielding. As of course the admirals are aware, even particles of this size if not deflected would pass through the starbase causing significant hull damage and depressurization. As Starbase 47 continues to rotate, albeit at a slower rate, power will need to be distributed to each new sector of arrays as they become the forward-facing arrays. Does the station's current state of repair allow for this? Our phasers are intact and if necessary it should be possible to alter their apertures to a wider range and blanket a given sector with low-powered beams still sufficient to disintegrate the particulates, in which case the station could focus navigational deflector power to a limited area. We stand prepared to follow your instructions upon your evaluation of the situation, sirs.=^= The vulcan then paused to give the starbase officers time to review the data and judge the best course of action.

"We've found we're soon to be entering a region of increased particle density which at current velocity would have us in there for approximately a minute, still sufficient to do damage however. Has the El Salvador detected any such of these bodies?" Gheskori asked Savot.
Savot reacted with surprise at their foreknowledge and gave an exposition on what could occur and what they may possibly need to do to avert the crisis. Ghes glanced at Tetsutaro and after receiving the latter's nod stated they concurred. "We should have sufficient power to rotate an area of the external hull with increased navigational shielding and... reinforced structural integrity about the station in tandem with reduction of our rotational velocity."
Ghes was pausing every now and then as he was continuously advised by officers about him with the requisite expertise in specific areas, "And... yes, your efforts to eliminate the particles with wide-beam phasers before they reach us would be appreciated, Commodore, if you can yourself spare the power."
They had scanned farther ahead - as best as they were able with the currently patchy long range sensors - to see what other spots of increased particle density may lie in their path - so far they had found none, at least not in the length of space over which the rotation of the Starbase was to be eliminated. Once through that zone, three hours from now, there would be only another six hours before the Starbase would merely be 'translating' and not rotating.
"We have a further matter to bring to each other's attention, Commodore," and Ghes gestured the way of Lieutenant Hood, who he saw Savot had already spotted. "Your new Chief Tactical & Security Officer is ready to take up his post." He looked Hood's way, "If you are finished with your current duties, Lieutenant."
<Tag Hood, Savot>
Ghes had learned that his SMO of the Enzio hadn't yet rejoined the ship (the officer in command and Lieutenant Clark's repairs were continuing in earnest) but was still making periodic visits to the temporary Starbase sickbay for check-ups on her injury sustained during the initial impact of the nebula shockwave (nearly two weeks ago now, Ghes noted to his astonishment - the time had flown).
Casting off his irksome aides and advisors and the infinite trail of diplomats and their representatives that fanned out behind him, he made for the section through which Tavik would pass - to reach sickbay for her latest check and possibly treatment - in approximately a minute from now.
"Colonel," he greeted the marine as she rounded the corner ahead. "I haven't seen you since Sato's staff briefing; you seem to be walking a lot better since then. How is Lieutenant Vren?" Vren the poor quartermaster who'd been taken by the incorporeal entities during the last Enzio assignment (seeming a lifetime ago now) and, after being recovered along with the other Enzio missing persons, had now been knocked into a coma - he'd thrown himself in the way of a falling piece of bulkhead that would otherwise have struck and likely killed Colonel Tavik.
<Tag Tavik>
"I'm planning to get back aboard the Enzio shortly; check on the Commander's progress and Clark's contingencies. Good luck with your check up and give Lieutenant Vren my regards if he has regained or soon regains consciousness."

Command Center ::=^= You are of course correct Commodore .. We will indeed incur considerable damage should the micro-meteoroid particulates be allowed to impact the Starbase .. .. =^= Admiral Tetsutaro said, rubbing his chin as if it were a lamp containing a genie they could make use of, alas, this was not the case. "Do you have a suggestion Sato ?" Gheskori asked. The Japanese Officer nodded: =^= Commodore .. It is highly unlikely that your vessel could successfully remove all obstacles without suffering damage that could prove problematic for you and your crew .. I do however believe that a second Starship placed above or below you might be sufficient to protect us with minimal damage from stray particulates =^= he looked away from the large screen and asked the communications Officer to patch in the USS Raven. The screen split and Harry Wedlerson appeared. Sato asked him to request Admiral Torek attend the conference. moments later, after his brush with the irate Ferengi, Carl appeared on screen. =^= Admiral Torek .. .. What is the status of the Raven ? =^= Sato asked, Carl frowned, knowing the man could only be asking for one reason. =^= We still have to fit the new warp core .. All systems are now up and running .. Manoeuvring Thrusters and Impulse are on-line using our reserves .. But that won't last long .. Did you have something in mind for us ? =^= =^= Two warp cores are en-route to the Raven as we speak Admiral .. Once they are in situ I believe you could be of assistance with a little issue we are facing =^= =^= Sorry Admiral .. What do you have in mind .. Exactly ? =^= Torek asked, eyes flicking to his Bridge Officers off-screen. Sato explained what they needed, Carl was understandably pessimistic, not because the plan was flawed, but the Raven had taken a battering, they may well pass outside the Starbase only to find themselves falling behind and beyond any hope of either going home, or catching the speeding Starbase. The thing was four kilometers in length, even with two Starships using every megawatt of their phaser power is was unlikely that they would stop everything, but if positioned right, and 'IF' the Raven was able to help, they would at the least be able to protect all, or most of the vital and occupied levels. =^= If I may .. .. This situation requires your full attention Admiral =^= Sato urged. =^= I'll have the Raven moving as soon as the cores arrive =^= Carl said, turning as Harry informed him that they were already aboard. Carl couldn't wait to see Andae's face when he explained their sudden and unexpected good fortune .... Two hours forty minutes later - USS Raven-C ::"Helm .... Bring thrusters and impulse drives on-line." Carl ordered. Marionette, who had spent the last two hours in Engineering assisting the Chief Engineer, turned to her panel then confirmed they had internal power.
To maximise their effectiveness, the two Starships would need to take up equidistant positions along the vertical axis of the towering Starbase. The El Salvador, having not suffered the damage the Raven had, would slowly begin to drop below the Dome until she was parallel with Level One One One Zero, which housed Life support among other vital services needed to keep the Starbase alive, it would also protect the most densely populated area's of the Base. The Raven, once successfully outside, would also drop, but only to the lower rim of the massive eleven kilometer circumference of the Dome, protecting the Fusion Reactors and the Command Center and those area's occupied by the sick and injured.
"Helm, disconnect from externals, move us away from the dock, thirty meters only !" Carl ordered. He sat in silence as the Raven disconnected her umbilicus and seemingly 'drifted' away from her mooring. When that was done he asked her to rotate the ship until aligned with the gaping maw that was the former Space-doors.
"Admiral." Harry said, motioning to the view-screen .... There, looking almost tiny and immensely fragile, was the USS El Salvador.
"Comms, inform Commodore Savot we are ready to assist." Carl said ..........

After the commotion died down, Hood began running maintenance on his failing terminal. The tools, left scattered by a previous crewman in a hurry, were difficult to locate. As Hood got lost in his dream of having his own terminal backβ¦
βWe have a further matter to bring to each other's attention, Commodore,β and Ghes gestured the way of Lieutenant Hood, who he saw Savot had already spotted. βYour new Chief Tactical & Security Officer is ready to take up his post.β He looked Hood's way, βIf you are finished with your current duties, Lieutenant.β
Hood stood abruptly, barely missing the corner of his station. He had hardly realized the admirals were addressing him.
βYes, sir,β Hood began, βI been looking forward to my transfer. You wouldnβt happen to have a functioning security station on the bridge, would you, sir?β
Hood immediately second-guessed attempting to make small-talk with an admiral, especially, considering the functionality of his bridge.

[El Salvador: Main Bridge, -2 hours 45 minutes]
Commodore Savot nodded to first Gheskori and then to the young officer to whom the Section Admiral had referred, =^=Indeed, Admiral. We stand ready to receive Lieutenant Hood at his readiness.=^=
Hood stood up and responded promptyly, βYes, sirβ, Hood began, βI've been looking forward to my transfer. You wouldnβt happen to have a functioning security station on the bridge, would you, sir?β
Under the circumstances Savot could well understand such a question being asked. With the plan they intended to soon implement, it would be crucial for the tactical officer to know whether or not his duty station required repairs, or if the damage was so significant that for the moment weapons control would need to be routed elsewhere until they'd passed through the particulate field. Fortunately, the vulcan Commodore was able to give the best-case-scenario response to that particularly inquiry, =^=Our tactical and security bridge controls are indeed functioning, Lieutenant Hood. I would rather our introduction were under less severe circumstances, but you are most welcome aboard the El Salvador nonetheless. The next rotational window of line-of-sight between the opened space doors and our vessel should occur in approximately 38 minutes, I recommend we transport you aboard at that time to lessen the potential for transporter signal interference. Can you be prepared to come aboard by then?=^=
At Hood's acknowledge, Savot gave his new officer a firm nod and signed off with a nod of gratitude to Admiral Sato and the Section Admiral to try and get as much work done as possible on further repairs before they intersected with the particulate field.
************************************************************************************************************************* [El Salvador: Main Bridge, Hood's Arrival]
After having to exchange turboshafts a few times to circumvent damaged sections of the tubes, Lieutenant Hood was finally deposited on the El Salvador-C's bridge with a whooshing open of the doors. Commodore Savot was on his back up to his shoulders in the underbelly of the Tactical station, running diagnostics on each of the conduits and pathways to ensure they were in ideal shape prior to their utilization against the particulate debris. Beside him having a slightly harder time fitting in the confined space to do the same checks on the Security station was a tailless Gorn in security yellow whose reptilian nostrils flared at the presence of a new smell on the bridge. "Sssir, the new lieutenant", the Gorn hissspoke at the vulcan who extricated himself from the Tactical innards and rose to his feet.
"Welcome aboard, Lieutenant Hood. I'm Commodore Savot, though aboard ship I utilize Captain as my form of address as it takes less time to say and serves the same purpose", the vulcan stated as he picked up a padd to hand to Hood, "Your quarters on Deck 3 and Main Security Office on Deck 4 are denoted here on ship's schematics. I'm pleased to have your experience at Tac/Sec. This is Chief Petty Officer Zakryn; he's been heading the departments since our shakedown cruise. If you prefer to focus on one aspect of the duties, he'll be able to supplement the other when necessary."
The Gorn had gotten to his feet, standing about 7.5 feet tall, bringing his clawed hands behind him at parade rest as he gave a small nod of the head towards Hood, "Good to meet you, bosss."
Savot then resumed speaking, getting down to business, "We'll need the phaser output beams dispersed as widely as possible to cover the greatest area of particulates. Sensor scans indicate no unusual composition so it should take a minimum level of potency to eliminate them therefore coverage is our priority. I want you to prepare to transfer all shield power to the forward shields as well, and refocus the shield configuration to project a vertical wedge. Based on sensor readings, simply impacting our shields at all should destroy over 98% of the particulates and with this configuration any that survive impact will be deflected to our port and starboard ideally missing Starbase 47 entirely or at the least impacting in areas which will sustain less critical damage." The vulcan had considered expanding their potential coverage by suggesting the deployment of shuttlecraft to add their weapons to the mix but the striking arc of most shuttle weapons would require far more shuttles than would even be efficient to launch at present, assuming that many were even spaceworthy at the present time...

***************************************************************************************************************************************** [El Salvador: Main Bridge, Time Equal With U.S.S. Raven]
Savot had only just resumed the center seat when it approached approximately one half-hour before reaching the particulate field. He turned first to the Engineering station where their Tellarite cadet was once again on duty, "Cadet Zhegras, inform Commander Delbridge we shall require all power possible routed to weapons and shields; medical systems are not to be deprived of power except by my direct order. Ops, synch our sensor data with those of the Raven and Starbase 47; denote each entity's weapon ranges and available targeting archs and relay those overlays to Lt. Hood's Tactical station so he can direct and prioritize fire at his best discretion." The last orders were directed toward Karysta, and Savot made a mental note to after the current crisis was past extend her an offer to become a genuine Acting-Cadet instead of the ruse she had perpetrated in order to get aboard and attempt his assassination weeks prior.
The readiness signal came through from the Raven as the El Salvador moved into position at level One One One Zero, Savot nodded acknowledgement, "Mr. Hood, my compliments to Admiral Torek, and the El Salvador stands ready to face this endeavor alongside the esteemed crew of the Raven. Relay our readiness to Starbase Command as well. Ops, give me verbal interception-ETA counts at 5 minute intervals."

Event Day Fourteen - 23:40 hours :: As the El Salvador began to drop, the newly emerging Raven took her place temporarily ..... "Harry, thank Commodore Savot on my behalf." "Helm, status ?" Torek asked. "We are currently holding station as ordered at coordinates provided by the USS El Salvador Captain." the Android informed him. "Andae, hows our core ?" Carl asked, but the Chief Engineer could only shrug in a 'your guess is as good as mine' noncommittal way, Carl would have rolled his eyes but they were already stinging with every blink. "Rear view on screen Harry." Carl requested, seeing the still slowing rotation taking the opening through which they had just passed through passing beyond their view. it was still going to take hours to halt the rotation completely alas, "Helm, thrusters only, begin dropping us down the Starbase until parallel with the lower rim of the Dome." Even though they were still travelling at thousands of kilometers per second, the ships and the behemoth Starbase appeared stationary, the problems would begin if they began to get closer, of worse still, further apart ! ... On the view-screen they watched as the Dome appeared to increase size as they dropped, this was somewhat of an false reading given the Raven had aligned her position with the central core and not the outer hull of the Starbase, so as they fell the curve of the Dome made it appear to be getting closer, it was a little unnerving given their precarious situation. He knew that almost two kilometers below them, the USS El Salvador was conducting the same manoeuvre until she reached her assigned position. But it was painstakingly slow going, even for a Starship using thrusters only. Finally, he could see beneath the rim of the Dome, it wasn't a view they normally got to see ... Commander Wedlerson at Ops turned to Carl: "Sir, just a suggestion, but are we sure we can hold position using thrusters, there is a pressure wave travelling ahead of that shower, nothing too drastic, but there all the same. Would it be plausible, even doable, to lock a tractor beam on the outer hull of the Starbase, effectively anchoring us in place, just in case the shockwave or any or the micro-meteorites get through and begin having an adverse effect on the Raven and El Salvador ?" "But wouldn't a tractor beam 'pull' us towards the Starbase ?" Calli asked. "Not if we use two." Andae said from the Engineering Station, making everyone look in his direction, "We could use two of the tractor emitters, one to hold position, the second to counteract the pull." Blakus explained. "So one pulling one pushing ?" Calli replied. "Exactly." "The hull of the Starbase has taken a battering it was never designed for ....." Carl said, deep in thought, "I'd like the area's the tractors will effect evacuated, at least the outermost sections ... Harry, contact Command, pass on our suggestion to Admiral's Tetsutaro and Gheskori, then inform the El Salvador, they'll be in the same position as us." "Captain. The shockwave is now eighteen minutes from impact with the Starbase." Marionette informed them. "Harry you have the Bridge, put me through to Command in my Ready Room, I'll speak with them, you pass on our suggestion to Commodore Savot for his appraisal." Carl said, rising, Andae and Calli following ..........

Back-post: approx. 1.5 days after event, aboard USS Maracanda
"... Do you need to activate the Maracanda's containment fields? We may be able to perform a minor power transfer over the link enough for you to power some of the Maracanda's minor systems."
"Thank you, Lieutenant, yes, that may well be useful," Blakus replied to Tamarov. Andae cast about the darkened corridors of the Maracanda, worried about what weaknesses lay within those bulkheads, how susceptible they were to allowing thalaron through their molecular structure. Although he knew the radiation didn't degrade non-organic tissue, that didn't preclude the possibility it could permeate through it to reach that which was living. He steeled himself to remain and regulate the power transfer from the El Salvador to the Maracanda - to establish containment fields, the first stage hopefully of an eventual power up - and fought to stave off thoughts of invisible thalaron drifting through the sepulchral corridors...
Day 13, aboard USS Raven
Left with the raving and borderline psychotic Ferengi Krall, Blakus tutted quietly at the man's remonstrations and glanced impatiently towards the briefing room door, "Yes, yes, quiet down, would you, you..." he cleared his throat, "Esteemed guest."
The Ferengi grinned toothily at him, "I wish to be entertained. Do you juggle?" Andae went to the replicator and bade the guest drink the substance he synthesised there, something that would make the Ferengi suitably docile without posing a risk to himself, to those around him or to the ship itself. "Don't think my friends here are confined to those of my own noble species," Krall said suddenly. "Profiteers from over the Alpha and Beta Quadrants are aligned with my little, not so little, consortium that I had going on this heap of junk -"
Blakus jolted upright in his seat. "The Starbase! The Starbase!" Krall yelled, cringing and looking terrified. "A group of us on the Starbase were looking for new opportunities in the sector, Sector 47 that is, until you and the Federation sprung this dastardly trap on us and thwarted our new venture before we could start it. Ah ha, this is a conspiracy, isn't it... Yet another example of the Federation, with its enlightened moneyless society, oppressing those who wish to pursue profit individually and for honourable ends."
"I will put you to an honourable end, if you wish it, Krall..." Blakus said through gritted teeth, gripping his ice water prehensilely. "Your consortium was looking for, what?"
Krall spoke a few drowsy words about untapped resources and Blakus pointed out there may be plenty of that where the Starbase may eventually arrive - though Krall's group wouldn't be permitted to get near it: departure of civilian ships would be monitored closely once the Starbase was stationary in its new surrounds which were still cloaked in mystery.
Day 14, aboard USS Raven
The Section Admiral seemed non-committal from Andae's perspective; he watched him on Carl's personal console with the others in the ready room. Quite strangely, Blakus found himself sharing the SA's sentiments, though he did think the issues with the plan could be overcome.
"Admiral," he spoke to Carl as the flag officers on the screen allowed Andae, Carl and Calli a moment to confer amongst themselves, "I think I understand their tentative objection; it's that the tractor beams of the Raven and El Salvador acting on the Starbase - even if it's for our ships' stability and even with using two beams, one push, one pull - could serve to introduce irregularities in the SB's rotational velocity reduction: extra spin vectors, new elements of rotation about 2 or 3 axes... The tractor beams will have to be very low power, or..." - this was the idea that'd occurred to him on entering the ready room - "... they could be phased partially out of normal space, such that most of the actual tractor energy will be imparted on some subspace layer and thus won't give too much extra angular momentum to the Starbase, and then allowing the requisite stopping force, to have us hold position, to be applied to the Raven and El Salvador."
They resumed the on-screen conference with the Admirals, though now the Section Admiral had disappeared. Admiral Tetsutaro and another flag officer approved of the plan of the tractor beam phase modifications and signalled that the Starbase, too, was ready to present its strongest front to the incoming particle shower (this was in the form of enhanced structural integrity and navigational deflector shielding - slowly shifted across the slowly rotating dome - as a last line of defence in case any of the micro-meteoroids did make it through the two starships' protective screen).

Allan Hood commed his wife and let her know that they were moving to the El Salvador in about 30 minutes. By the time Hood at crawled and cat-walked his way to his quarters, they had 20 minutes left to depart. Hoodβs family packed light to their quarters on the station, but, had the rest of their belongings in the cargo bay.
Hood carried both daughters in his arms, both excited to move somewhere else, anywhere, other than the suffering space station.
βIs our new ship hurt, too?β Gracie asked from his right arm while Donna bounced around in his left arm. Lights still flickered in the corridor accompanied by a light humming that seemed to revitalize every 30 seconds.
βYes, our new ship is hurt, too,β Hood responded. βIf it looks scary, just close your eyes, but, itβs being fixed and remember it doesnβt hurt.β
Sami-Jo had the ships schematic on her padd, familiarizing herself, again, with where they were beaming in and living.
βWeβll be beaming in on Deck 4, but, they seem to be directing us through a short Jefferies tube,β she said, thinking about the girls and her slight claustrophobia.
βWeβll be fine; itβs barely five meters,β Hood rationalized after glancing toward the schematic, βI donβt want to request we beam to our quarters considering that they might be low on energy resources.β
***
A cadet met them as they dematerialized on the El Salvador emergency transporter pad. He seemed to have recently cut his temple, probably working on something before being called to escort Hoodβs family to their new home.
Grace loved crawling on her hands and feet up and down the Jefferies tube. Donna stayed really still huddled under her fatherβs arm while Grace zoomed past her.
By the time Sami-Joβs claustrophobia kicked in, they were crawling out into the darkened corridor. Gracie grew quite seeing a couple left over hoses and support struts lying on the floor and leaning on the bulkhead. As they made their way, Donna and Sami-Jo starting to relax as Gracie held his hand, staying close.
βWe have your cargo on Deck 11, sir,β the cadet said as they reached their quarters. The doors hesitated to open, barely allowing his family inside.
βIs there anything else, sir?β
βEverythingβs fine, cadet,β Hood replied, βmake sure you stop by sickbay on the way back.β
βYes, sir,β the cadet said, unconsciously touching his templeβs semidried blood.

Hood was taken aback at seeing the Gorn on the bridge, towering two and a half feet over his head. To top it off, Zakryn as a member of his security detail. The closest Hood had ever been to a Gorn is on the holodeck, in security training, against them. True, Hood had to have training against an assortment of species, whether in the Federation or not, but, to see one up close, in the flesh, reminded him how Starfleet truly is diverse.
Hood enjoyed seeing Commodore Savot getting his hands dirty, as a good captain should. Would the commodore/captain be working to replace his console if it had not been an emergency? Thatβs another matter.
Shield power to the forward shields, refocus the shield configuration to project a vertical wedgeβ¦got it.
βYes, sir. Iβll start immediately,β Hood responded to the captain, βthank you for your confidence.β Hood unconsciously glanced toward the Gorn and then back to his new captain. Hood had fought so many holographic Gorn that he was trying to keep from being visibly defensive.
I need to replace my Gorns with Talosians, Hood thought to himself. Mean Talosiansβ¦
***
Savot nodded acknowledgement, "Mr. Hood, my compliments to Admiral Torek, and the El Salvador stands ready to face this endeavor alongside the esteemed crew of the Raven. Relay our readiness to Starbase Command as well. Ops, give me verbal interception-ETA counts at 5 minute intervals."
Hood sent the message and turned over his shoulder to take in the crew. Like the cadets helping him with utilizing the shield modulators to match Captain Savotβs shield harmonic adjustments, a good portion of the bridge crew, at this time, seemed to be cadets, also. With Zakryn on his left, a couple other cadets were stationed around behind him. The trainee and instructor stations were vacant, which made sense considering all hands were needed on deck, recently. In the Academy, Hood had to shadow other officers temporarily, but, wasnβt given a post to himself. But, then again, those were easier days.
Hood turned back around and focused on his duties, before he got his first reprimand. He didnβt like not having the full view of the bridge before his eyes. Maybe he could get security transferred to the Master Situation Analysis station? Only time will tell, at the moment.

The little womans face is grim and frowning, perhaps a little tired, but steadfast regardless. Life, and duty, goes on.:: Current personnel loss count is a' 135. Lost Ensign Braccus, Lt. ::A shot of the transporter room is placed into the log here...just a minute of time in the day of people who somehow just keep going. ::20 minutes later, Irae has removed the medbay coat and taken up one of the shoulder strap medical kits, heading out of the office. She pauses to look at a couple of datapads that her new head nurse has for her, giving thumbprint authorization for controlled substance access and then gives the ladies and gents a nod, patting a cadet on the shoulder as a little forehead wound is sealed up, poor kid only just showed up to have that dealt with. She knows that she is a little late for bridge duty but since shes holding two jobs plus helping with others, a little late will have to do. Shes sure the Captain can manage to drive until she gets there. We may be half wrecked, missing a quarter of the crew, and all tired as hell, but protocol must be maintained...especially for new arrivals.::
::She has to take a detour here and there but eventually Deis Irae arrives at the new quarters of the newest family of the El Salvador. She is so very glad that the woman and child involved wernt injured. She had recieved a report that the wife had been suffering from claustrophobia so she had brought along a mild tranquilizer just in case, though even that kind of medication could only do so much. Once arriving, Deis gives herself a good once over to make sure she didnt have anything out of place. No spots on her uniform or anything of that nature, then reaches out and chimes the door. She is suprised to find that the door is answered by a small girl, but she quickly puts on her pleasant doctor smile:: Hello there...Im Dr. Deis. Can i be speakin wi yer mum?

::Shortly thereafter, the Doctor tries to shed her Doctorness a bit and put on her Commanders face, striding onto the bridge to give the Captain and bridge crew a nod:: Sorry I be late, Capn...busy busy. ::Waiting until the maneuvering has finished and then relieving the current helmsman::

[El Salvador: Main Bridge, Present Time]
As the particulate cloud approached mere minutes away now, Savot conferred with Engineering to hear the pleasing results that all power levels had returned to nominal levels following the transfer of what they'd been able to spare at the time to the Maracanda for Commander Blakus' utilization. The vulcan captain had read Tamarov's report of the comm-exchange with the Raven's officer but was unaware as to the ship's fate as he'd been too busy with repairs on the El Salvador to follow-up on it beyond ensuring Commander Blakus hadn't remained isolated on board and exposed to harm. He'd made a point in the previous days to make the proverbial rounds through the ship in between repair tasks, both to show the flag so to speak as well as to ensure ship's personnel were in fact taking time to rest at reasonable intervals. He had served with a great number of these beings for several years and knew their dedication was often targeted towards others before themselves. This was a noble quality and a necessary one in dire situations such as that with which they were now faced... but by the same token no one could do another any good if they succumbed to exhaustion. Savot himself had taken 3 periods of rest for 3 hours apiece since the shockwave impact; technically he should be capable of going without any sleep for at least 2 weeks but given that each new day potentially brought the Section 47 Fleet up against something that couldn't be anticipated it seemed prudent to take at least small periods of rest now in case he had to push that larger wakefulness window sometime in the near future.
The newly arrived Lt. Hood settled into place quickly and thus-far seemlessly, a fact that Savot took note of with satisfaction. He knew he himself could be distant from the rest of the crew, both due to his vulcan upbringing and his very position as commanding officer, so it was important to him that the crew feel a kindredness amongst each other so he knew they could all find support and camaraderie when it was most needed. Though this thought in and of itself spoke volumes about how much more approachable this particular vulcan could be than the expected cultural matter-of-factness.
As the ship settled into place at the appropriate vertical orientation and Commander Irae had made her timing apologies and relieved the officer at the helm, Savot gave her a welcoming nod and continued the 3-way communication exchange between the El Salvador, the Raven, and Starbase 47 Command. The latter 2 shared the El Salvador's viewscreen, split down the center as each representative spelled out their ideas and concerns regarding tractor use upon the Starbase. Savot appreciated Admiral Torek's concern; if any vessel separated from the Starbase and lost velocity it would have no way of catching up to the station's current speeds and at the very least would take weeks or months at high warp to reach the station's eventual point of rest. Likewise, however; the structural strain as well as inadvertent rotational force placed on the already devastated starbase physical integrity had to be considered first due to the vastly higher number of occupants therein as compared to the starships. As he was considering the issues, Savot was impressed once again with Blakus' mental acuity as he voiced a potential solution utilizing subspace to avoid physically acting on the starbase itself while accomplishing the same goal.
The vulcan captain then spoke, adding his own variables to the mix for consideration, =^=As the El Salvador was outside of dock and struck by the shockwave directly; our external momentum remains the same as Starbase 47 itself therefore I calculate our falling behind unlikely so no tractor power need be utilized on our behalf. I believe Commander Blakus' proposal regarding redirection of the physical counteraction toward a layer of subspace quite sound. Likewise, should additional measures be required as we proceed the El Salvador can lock our tractor onto the Raven adding our own forward momentum to hers; the mass of the vessel would have a slowing impact on our inertia but in the vacuum of space it should be negligible.=^=
Karysta interrupted as politely as possible, following Savot's orders to give a verbal count-off every 5 minute interval that fell away between the S47 fleet and the particulate cloud, "Captain, 5 minutes to outer envelope of the micrometeoroid cloud."
<Inserts: Any Raven or SB47 Responses>
Command gave their final well-wishes and instructions, then the screen was vacated and treated everyone on the bridge to the usually unimpressive sight of what was the equivalent of a large handful of sand thrown in space. But take away or compromise the marvel of navigational deflector screens and those grains could obliterate any entities traveling through said space.... Savot gave a quick look around to each of the bridge stations, seeing everyone poised and ready to begin their individual tasks that would hopefully form the symphonic resonance of success. He spoke an order to Cadet Zhegras at the Engineering console for her to forward to Commander Delbridge, "Engineering, deploy reserve power to the shield grid and phaser banks." Unfortunately torpedoes couldn't be used at the moment because as soon as they left the launchers the ship who fired them would catch up to them and damage themselves at the speeds they were being pushed at presently. Savot spoke next to Ops, "Miss Karysta, group segments of the cloud by particle density and plot their anticipated courses following impact with our wedge-formation shield projection, noting any anticipated impact locations on the starbase. Lieutenant Hood, prioritize your phaser fire on those groupings poised to hit the starbase in the most high-priority protection zones. In the absence of high-priority targets you may engage other particulate masses at your discretion. Prepare an opening phaser volley to thin the field before impact. Helm, maintain our current orientation; correct with maneuvering thrusters as needed if any impacting clusters are of sufficient mass to alter our heading."
The El Salvador thrummed in anticipation of the coming obstacle, ship and crew prepared to do their utmost to see their headquarters and more importantly the people within it safely through this next card dealt them by the cosmic whims of fate. The seconds ticked away until finally it read outer weapon range reached, Savot spoke calmly into the tense silence, "Mr. Hood, fire opening volley." And the 'battle', so to speak, was joined...

Post by Gheskori on May 25, 2017 0:31:04 GMT
Ghes surveyed the displays arrayed in a semi-circle arc about this part of Ops, casting glances up at the ceiling-mounted screens (showing the surrounding space, various tactical plots of the coming action against the meteoroid shower, situation reports from the ships out there and the Starbase itself) every so often to affirm to himself that all was proceeding as planned.
He'd left Sato in control of affairs while he'd been seeing to the injured Tavik and Vren (Enzio marines) nearby and inside the makeshift medical bay; now he'd returned, he found the operation ready to be commenced, El Salvador and Raven holding steady in their orientation above and below the latitudinal axis at the level of the dome's widest circumference, preparing to fire into the rapidly approaching particle shower.
"El Salvador has opened fire, sir," a controller reported to him quietly. Ghes nodded, eyes running over his console. "Initial results appear satisfactory; 30% of the denser sections of the foremost particles have been disintegrated..."
"Proportion of particles having made it through... less than 4% from the foremost denser sections," the sensor controller reported from across Ops, " Navigational shielding is deflecting the micro-meteoroid fragments from sensitive areas."
Again, Ghes acknowledged. They wouldn't even feel such near misses, the particles deflected out of the path of the onrushing Starbase - that simply couldn't manoeuvre out the way without tearing itself to pieces - well away from the superstructure of the dome, sent spiralling, receding nimbii, into the dark nothingness and abyss of unknown regions.
Here be dragons, they said on Earth when it was for them so much smaller, so much for them still to realise, the Denobulan mused.
What seemed like many minutes of silence ensued in Starbase Ops while the carving up of the micro-meteoroid system progressed, though in fact it was only forty seconds... Still Ghes found himself heading for the SA ready room situated just off Ops, content not only because of the fact of the silence in Ops - no unforeseen disasters in their operation, etc. - but because it embodied the idea that the crew of those two ships out there - the Excalibur class, the Sovereign class - were quietly going about their business.
As the Starbase continued to rotate slowly the areas of enhanced structural integrity - fields reenergised from depleted reserves which had gone to life support, general disaster recovery - and navigational shielding were rotated with it (though rotated counter of course to the Starbase's rotation about its longtitudinal axis).
Ghes - and Sato, the Denobulan imagined - was glad that they hadn't chosen to use unmodified tractor beams for the Raven; reports were suggesting such a tractor beam would've introduced a very undesirable precessional element into the Starbase's rotation... In just under three hours, the Starbase would've been rotating about an axis orthogonal to the longitudinal axis and which intersected with the very bottom tip of the Starbase, that is, it would've been being spun about in a flat disc, like grabbing a friend (the Starbase) by the 'hands' and spinning them off their feet around in a perpetual, mad and likely lethal loop.
As it was, the El Salvador was floating free relying on its momentum which was fundamentally the same as the Starbase's, whilst the Raven used its modified tractor beams to fix itself to the Starbase and not impinge upon the base's current orientation and velocity.
=/\=Admiral Gheskori, this is Carnett in Ops.=/\=
=/\=Go ahead, Carnett.=/\= He strode from the ready room and rejoined the others in Ops, Carnett now giving his report in person,
"Sir, we're reading a volume of micro-meteoroids behind the rest of the shower, of the highest density yet seen, almost to the level of tritanium in liquid state! It went undetected 'til now partly because it was obscured by the more immediate shower, partly because the high density volume also consists of an unknown type of gas, 4.3% of which constitutents are unrecognised exotic particles... they seem to have masked the trailing high density patch; originally, they masked the whole particle shower... That's why none of us detected it 'til it was virtually on top of us."
The three-way comm was still open, "Admiral, Commodore, did you get all that? Direct your sensors to the tail of the shower - there's a volume of super-high density particles and exotic gases at the end of the shower's trail."

=/\= Who's on the line, Brex? I don't recognise the voice? =/\=
"Ensign Heath, this is Brent Hopkins, Technician 3rd Class, Starbase 47 Maintenance and Repair. He was floating around outside cargo bay one, so Daniel and I let him in. He'd like to help, sir."
=/\= He's welcome. Does security know he's on board? =/\=
"No Sir, I contacted you first."
=/\= I'll sort that. Mr Hopkins, welcome to the Enzio. I'm sorry we are not able to meet face to face, but we're not able to open the bulkheads between the hull sections at present. Brex, we don't have any officers on the Secondary hull, I wan't you to take charge in Engineering there. The Bravo core is on the fritz after that antimatter impact, I'm concerned about main power. Mr Hopkins, if you have experience with any of the equipment you find is damaged, I'm sure Brexon would appreciate your input. =/\=
"Right Sir, I'll do my best."
=/\= Thank you Mr Hopkins. Brex, let me know if you need anything, I'll see what I can get for you. =/\=
"Ensign Heath, I will contact you regularly with our progress."
=/\= Excellent. Heath out. =/\=

"Damage reports," Lieutenant Miak requested.
Simon pulled himself back into his seat, wincing as a shock of nerves ran up his damaged arm. The console was flashing red lights in several areas, mostly communication failures. All he had to go on was the cumbersome text feed that was being fed to the bridge through the ops station.
"No reports of further casualties so far," Rivers said, "Sick bay has sent a report on its wounded. We have limited numbers of life threatening injuries, mostly bumps, bruises, breaks and burns. Some are major. We have seven confirmed deaths through the ship. I am awaiting further information."
"We need internal sensors and comms. If there are wounded in the ship who haven't called for help, we need to know about it. In the meantime, continue to coordinate manned searches of all decks."
"Yes sir. We only have comm-badges at present. What can we do, Clark?"
Simon had been pondering exactly this question for several minutes and was not surprised when someone brought it up.
"The Comm-badge repeaters are isolated from the main communication systems for security, to prevent anyone wirelessly tapping into the computer core."
"There's some context you've missed out there, Lieutenant," Miak said.
"Sorry, I was thinking it through when you asked. We could physically connect a comm-badge to the computer core on an encrypted channel and establish a data feed between different parts of the ship. Although the badges are not designed for that level of data load, we could be careful about it, and set up a middleware to translate data into a low bandwidth variant."
"What sort of connection would that give us?" Rivers asked.
"Low resolution feeds from any functional systems. Allow us to transmit commands, perhaps with a delay, but they'd get there. I don't know if we'd get any internal comms out of it, we don't currently have access to see the status of those controllers on the other parts of the ship to run diagnostics, but it would give us that, at least." Simon added.
"Sounds like an improvement. What do you need?" Miak asked, turning around from the tactical station to look over to Simon.
"I'll need an electrical technician on each hull section with a good arm to make the modifications to the comm-badges. We'll need one for each of the three computer cores. It's a bit of old-fashioned wiring. There's a software modification, which I can do here, and then transmit into the core once the connection is established by fitting the commbadge to one of the auxiliaries. Someone will need to oversee the connection at the other end to pass the security key."
"That does not sound like a small job, can we afford to divert resource from other repairs?" Miak asked.
"We're struggling to manage that resource without a proper reporting system." Rivers added.
"True. Well, get it done, Chief. Lets find out what it is we don't know we need to fix next".
"Yes, Sir." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ USS Enzio, Deck One, Main Bridge, Event +2:45hrs
When Commander Paul Yarwood returned to the bridge, his eyes were bloodshot, and the EMH trailed behind him. A severe expression on his face.
"Attention, bridge." All the seats turned to face the commander, who had reached the centre chair, "My behaviour in the last few hours has been unacceptable, I am finding it difficult to accept that Lisa is gone. In the absence of any other command officers on this part of the ship, I am staying on the bridge for now. The EMH will monitor, and will tell me if I'm snapping. I will make an announcement to the crew shortly. Ensign Rivers, I'd like an update on the current status of the ship, followed by a repair schedule from Lieutenant Clark. Thank you."
While Rivers announced her report, Simon prepared one of his own.
"Engineering's first priority is to restore power to the Bravo warp core to ensure life support, inertial dampeners and other critical ships systems remained powered. Engineering estimates three hours until repairs are progressed to restart the reactor. Alpha teams are addressing damage caused by the nacelle, and the antimatter release damage to decks five through seven. Power systems on the primary engineering hull are edgy, but holding at around 78%. Assessments of the damage are still in progress, I am expecting an update in around ten minutes. The Charlie team is focused on the computer core reintegration issue, we've some ideas we've been discussing in the last half hour, technician Lewis doing some trials on the computer core at present, but the self diagnostics are a little erratic, Sir."
"Doctor, I'm feeling dizzy," Ensign Rivers said, the tone of her voice rising in alarm.
"Hold still then, let me have a look at you," He pointed a medical tricorder in her direction, "Low blood sugar, evidence of dehydration. When did you last eat? Or drink? Or sleep?"
"Uh, I'm not really sure..."
"Replicators are still active, and there's a bunk in the CO's office. Eat something, drink water, and take a break. We'll get someone to climb the water spout and keep your chair warm for a few hours,"
This brought a sweep of amusement to River's face, "But it's the CO's office..."
"Don't make me order it of you, Ensign. I mean, with your permission, commander?"
"Denied," Yarwood responded. "Do as the doctor says, Ensign. And the rest of you. Get something to eat and drink, we'll sleep in shifts, as needed. There are two bunks on this deck, draw me a rota, doctor. I have completed my notes, I will address the crew."
He stood, and tapped his badge, "This is Commander Paul Yarwood to all hands. This is a general announcement." He paused, allowing time for the crew to stop what they were doing to listen, "The past few hours have been difficult for all of us, both on board the Enzio, and our colleagues on Starbase 47. We have limited information, though the disturbances through the station have reduced in frequency and magnitude. It is clear that we are not out of this yet. You, this crew, have performed admirably, and I know that you will continue to perform, to keep our ship, and each other, together. Starbase 47 is accelerating, and rotating, with the debris within the station drifting in line with those forces. Without inertial dampeners to protect them, we can only hope, until we can reestablish communications that the people on the starbase have been as reliant and resourceful as the crew of the Enzio."
The rattle of his next shaky breath edged through the comm system.
"It is with deepest sadness that I inform you now of our losses. Operations Ensign Jude Bower. Security Crewman Nim Vara. Security Petty Officer Ingrel. Logistics Crewman Iona Fellows. Science Technician Torkar. Engineering Technician Darren Barker. Science Lieutenant Lisa Yarwood."
Tears slid from his eyes to his cheeks. He kept his head high in the silence that followed on the bridge.
"We are proud to have served with them. We will honour their sacrifice. Not with anger... but with determination; that their loss, will be the last loss. We... will weather this storm. We will weather it together. And we will come through. Together. All of us. Stay safe. Do your duty. And look out for each other. Bridge out."
Simon felt the sting of tears in his own eyes as the commander sat down in the centre seat. He stood almost at once.
"Lieutenant Miak. I need a few minutes. You have the bridge."
Miak stood, and saluted smartly, his expression grim. "Yes, Sir."
Commander Yarwood inclined his head toward Miak as he entered his ready room.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ USS Enzio, Deck Two, Tertiary Computer Core, Event +3:20
Science Technician Mark Lewis, Second Class was sitting in a cramped compartment at the back of the tertiary computer core. He was the only crewman on this part of the ship with any wiring experience, and was being duly instructed by Lieutenant Clark over the comm.
"What next, chief?"
=/\= Look for a panel toward the left, about shoulder height if you're sitting. Lift the cover off. These are the computer auxiliary connections, they are normally used only for diagnostics by a specialist maintenance team. Be careful not to let any of the metal components off the commbadge touch the isolinear circuit casing. The auxiliary panel cover can be used as a shelf, if you've not lifted it off. =/\=
"Got it. There are four large, and two small auxiliary ports."
=/\= The smallest port nearest the hatch you entered by is port four, according to the schematic, this is the one that we've configured the middleware to work with. Connect the cable from the commbadge, and then secure it back to the panel using the wire clips. There should be a small drawer of them near the floor if you need some extras. =/\=.
"OK, done,"
=/\= I am initialising the middleware. Nice, that's working. You can come out now, crewman. That's a good job on your part. I just need to find someone on the other hull sections who can repeat the process with verbal instructions on the wiring. Want to give me a hand?" =/\=
"I'll have a go, sir,"
=/\= Good man. Come back up to the bridge, we'll use my workstation. =/\=
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ USS Enzio, Deck Nine, Bravo Engineering, Event +3:45
"How long now?"
Brexon turned and looked back at Brent Hopkins, with what she hoped was the stern expression that parents gave their youngest children. "That's the third time you've asked. In about five minutes the main batteries are empty and we fall back on emergency power. How long until you've realigned the containment field on that antimatter conduit?"
"Ten minutes?"
"I hope you enjoy working in the dark with no air."
"Call it twenty on the outside. Working in the dark is my specialist field. You?"
"I prefer to see what I'm working on. The purge cycle for the dylithium recrystalisation chamber will be complete in five minutes, that should get all of the warp plasma out. That valve up there needs replacing," she pointed up to where Third Technician Daniel Pixton was leaning out over a platform half a deck up, "with this one here so it doesn't back-flush, and the antimatter injector this side of where you are working needs replacing, so we can put antimatter into the warp core. I've ordered one, it's on it's way from storage."
"That's not a five minute job," Hopkins replied.
"We'll throw water at it."
"You'll what."
"It's an old expression. It means we'll apply our reserve effort." Hopkins gave her a quizzical look, so she turned behind her. "Hey Daniel?"
"I'm... just a minute," he climbed down the ladder, damaged valve in hand."
"Daniel? You're the technician from earlier. I never thanked you for letting me in."
"Aww, 't'is no sweat. What's up boss?"
"I need some heavy lifting. Will you rig up some straps on this crane, ready for when that injector arrives. We've got to lower it in just here. Do it now, or you'll be doing it in the dark."
"Sure, boss. Can I have some help?"
"I'll reseal the DRC, then yes, I'll help you,"
"Noone else?"
"They'll be here with the injector in a minute."
"Got it. Er... can I borrow your light?"
"Where's yours?" Brexon asked.
"Put it down somewhere. Can I?"
Brexon sighed. After so many years of working around humans she had picked up some of what they called body-language, and the sigh was a subtle indication of exasperation which she used to show that sterner words were coming shortly. Daniel had gotten very good at reading it.
He took the lamp from her hand. "Thanks, boss,"
They worked for a few minutes exchanging only the minimum of conversation while the power lasted. When it failed, the intensity of the artificial gravity dropped away, leaving only the residual fringes of the gravitational field from the decks well above them. The normal hum and buzz of of the dozens of pieces of equipment surrounding main engineering fell silent. Daniel's sharp intake of breath and the clunk of a spinning lamp hitting the deck indicated his inexperience of working in this sort of environment. To his credit, Hopkins continued working as if nothing had happened, the lamp on his shoulder illuminating his work area. Brexon smiled, she could do with more technicians like that on the team. She tapped her badge.
"Brexon to Lieutenant Heath"
=/\= Heath here =/\=
"Main power has failed on this deck, Sir, we are running emergency. Estimate fifteen minutes to reigniting Bravo."
=/\= Acknowledged. Keep me updated. =/\=
"Yes, Sir. Brexon out."
The main door to engineering clunked as the manual release was triggered. Two crewman came in, carrying the replacement antimatter injector awkwardly between them, struggling to manipulate it and themselves in the reduced gravity. Brexon helped them manoeuvre it into the slings of the crane, and lowered it slowly into position. Daniels checked the alignment, and ran a hyperspanner around its ends to secure it in place. He might be a joker, but Brexon did like him for his efficiency when it mattered.
"Injector seals checked Boss, it's good to go."
"Okay, I'm ready. This conduit is aligned."
"Just under the twenty minute mark. Nice work, Pixton, Hopkins."
"I'm good at what I do." Hopkins replied.
Daniel just grinned at her as he jumped out of the access area, and slid the cover plate into position, "You ever started a warp core, Boss?"
"I have been involved with the process many times and have completed the relevant training," Brexon responded levelly.
"That's not a very good yes."
"Too true. Fortunately we have Mr Hopkins with us, who has done this many times in the course of starship repair."
"Brent! Our saviour! Good job we were there to let you in, huh?"
Brexon ignored him, and tapped her badge. "Brexon to Ensign Heath. We are beginning Bravo core startup sequence."
=/\= Acknowledged. Go steady on the antimatter. Internals are still down, we'll need to use hand scanners to detect any containment fluctuations on the primary flow. Minimum requirements for the Secondary Hull, just enough to start trickling the main battery. =/\=
"Yes, sir. I will maintain this channel while we work. Beginning pre-initialisation checks, Hopkins?" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ USS Enzio, Primary Hull, Deck Five, Main computer core - Sub-level, Event +4:20 hrs
"Are you sure this will work, Lieutenant?"
=/\= Not entirely. We still don't know what the fault is. But between this, and going MVAM, I'd rather try this. Putting a starship back together with this much debris around it would be... er ... challenging =/\=
"Good point. Auxiliary port 1?"
=/\= That's it. Don't let the comm badge touch the isolinear channels =/\=
"I wouldn't dream of it. Okay, it's in."
=/\= Checking... Yes, that's a good connection. Nice job, Heath. =/\=
"Thank you, Sir. What's next."
=/\= Now we do the same on deck eleven. Who's in that section? =/\=
"There's no officers in engineering on that deck, we were all in Alpha Engineering at the time. Brexon is in charge. They've just cold started the Bravo warp core."
=/\= Good on them. How's it holding? =/\=
"At the last report, they had a stable reaction at five percent rated maximum. They're keeping it steady while they check all the connections. I'll give them another quarter hour before I bug them."
=/\= Brexon to Ensign Heath =/\=
"One moment, Chief." Heath tapped his badge, "Heath here."
=/\= Sir, the computer has come back up, it's reporting that it cannot reestablish connections with the rest of the ship. =/\=
"Yes, we are aware of that issue. Lieutenant Clark is looking into it from the Bridge. Have you got anyone there with wiring experience?"
=/\= I don't think so, Sir. I'll check. =/\=
Heath bent down to tidy up the cable clips he had dropped.
=/\= If we are going to want MVAM at short notice on this ship, we need to keep officers in each of the hull sections at all times. =/\=
"Agreed, Sir. This has been an unusual case."
=/\= Even so, I think it's worth making an engineering protocol. =/\=
=/\= Hopkins has wiring experience. What do you need? =/\=
=/\= Brexon, this is Clark. Who is Hopkins, I'm not sure I've met him yet, he's not on my skills matrix. =/\=
=/\= Sir, I didn't realise you were on the line. Hopkins is Starbase Maintenance and Repair. We picked him up after that antimatter explosion. =/\=
=/\= Understood. We need a commbadge wiring into the sub-level of the secondary computer core =/\=
=/\= He says he can do it, Sir, and asks which port, and for another twenty minutes to stabilise the Bravo antimatter containment flow. =/\=
=/\= Excellent. Ask him to contact me directly when he is ready. =/\=
=/\= Yes, Sir. Brexon out. =/\=
"What next, Chief?"
=/\= Ship reintegration and repairs. Ops has a priority list of the reported damage. Cover as much of it as you can. Don't ignore anything critical that you find, and keep Ops updated. Commander Yarwood is keeping us to a tight schedule. I'll work with Hopkins on the computer core. Get any and all injuries to medical treatment as priority ahead of anything but the most critical ship repairs. =/\=
"Yes, sir. Mend everything, crew first, ship second, stay ahead of the second officer's challenging schedule."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ USS Enzio, Deck One, Main Bridge, Event +4:55 hrs
=/\= Ensign Clark, this is Brent Hopkins. I've completed the connection of the port to the comm badge =/\=
"Excellent. I am testing the connection. That's good. Beginning transmission of security key. Give me a readout from the auxiliary panel."
=/\= It's showing a string of characters, sir =/\=
"That's right. Read out the last four groups."
Hopkins duly read out the groupings of characters, while Simon keyed them into his console with his good arm.
"Okay, the return key is entered into the console on the lower panel. Ready? Alpha-Six-Charlie-Two, Delta-Tango-Oscar-Nine, Four-India-Zero-Five, Three-Two-Bravo-Six."
=/\= All right, the light is green =/\=
"Connection established. Nice job."
=/\= Do you need me to do anything else, sir =/\=
"Stand by, the middleware configuration is transferring onto the auxiliary data bus. I'm trying to work out why the secondary computer core is reporting a connection fault and the other two are not even registering that there is a connection. What's different about this one?"
=/\= This one's had a power failure, maybe? I'm sorry sir, I have less experience with this sort of equipment. =/\=
"Thats all right, Mr Hopkins, it was mostly a question to myself. However that is a good thought. If I can't find anything else, I'll come back to that. I might need you in half an hour or so. I'll keep you posted."
=/\= I'll find something to fix nearby. Hopkins out. =/\=
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ USS Enzio, Deck One, Main Bridge, Event +5:40 hrs
"Commander Yarwood, Sir?"
"Lieutenant Clark?"
"I want to simultaneously turn off the primary, secondary and tertiary computer cores, sir."
Commander Yarwood nodded, as he considered the request. There had been much discussion in the last hour over the state of the Enzio's three disagreeing computer cores. "What's the risk?"
"Around ten minutes of outage, a very low risk of total computer failure, and a reasonable likelihood of restoring connections throughout the ship."
"Reasonable, Chief?"
"Yes, Sir. The secondary computer core is attempting re-connection every five minutes after it were powered up on deck eleven. Connections are not being established, as there is no response from the other cores, which are running in independent operation mode, and do not acknowledge the connection. Without going to MVAM, they are unable to communicate with each other over the subspace integration system. The flag to reset the operation mode is too deep within the security kernel for it to be accessible remotely through the auxiliary port comm-badge we have set up, and there's no-one on the other hulls with sufficient computer security privileges to reset it."
"Have you found the root cause of the issue?"
"No sir, but I am confident of this resolution. I have every intention of investigating further at a more convenient time."
Commander Yarwood turned away from the engineering station to look at the blank view screen. "Thoughts from the Bridge?"
Lieutenant Miak spoke up. "Try it, Commander. Computers are robust. They come back up."
Nods of assent passed around the room.
"Proceed, Lieutenant. Do a ship wide announcement first, I don't want any surprises."
Speaking ship wide was well outside of Simon's comfort zone. He considered briefly all that he needed to say, and tapped his badge with a buzz in his stomach.
"Lieutenant Clark to all hands. In ten minutes the main computer on all three hulls of the Enzio will be powered down for approximately five minutes. If you are using computer controlled equipment, make it safe prior to the outage. We are expecting connectivity between the three hull sections of the Enzio to be restored. Contact the bridge with any questions. Clark out."
=/\= "Nurse Walker to Lieutenant Clark." Simon remembered this nurse from his first visit to sick bay, a tall woman with an overbearing motherliness. She sounded haggard. "I want confirmation that the holographic systems in sick bay will be unaffected. We have two critical surgeries in progress, and I don't want any loss of life. =/\=
Simon glanced at the EMH on the bridge, who shrugged at him. He hadn't really expected the doctor to know a great deal about holo-engineering. "Clark to Walker. Sick bay holo systems have a secondary independent control. I'll have someone check it, now."
=/\= Let me know. =/\=
"Clark to Ensign Heath."
=/\= Heath here =/\=
"I need someone to check the secondary holo controls in sick bay before the computer goes down. If you can, switch them onto that secondary unit prior to the computer restart."
=/\= Understood. I think one of the holo-lab specialists is on that deck. I'll have them take a look. =/\=
Soon Simon was deep in questions from the crew about emergency force fields, plasma containment, sensor readouts, life support and many other ship systems. Secondary tractor control had been damaged, so the forward tractor beams would fail without main computer control. Helm confirmed that the aft tractors should be sufficient to hold the ship stationary unless they received any more shock waves. As they had no way to tell, they opted to take the risk.
"Clark to computer rooms. Confirm readiness." Two technicians and one Engineering officer confirmed good to go. "I am transmitting power down. You will have twenty seconds to confirm. Once the computers are off, wait five seconds and re-power to the standard process."
Across the bridge, console panels and displays blanked. Some like helm control, were hard wired with secondary processors providing the relevant functionality. Clark wondered how much of this ship were redundant systems. The lights blinked off and on again, and the hum of the air circulation clicked instantaneously to silence before continuing on secondary controls. The EMH vanished.
"Commander Yarwood, I propose we make this a regular test of secondary systems."
"Not now Lieutenant." The commander barked back at him.
Perhaps now was not such a good time. Simon thought. Feeling chastened, he made a note to propose it again later. Screens and displays flicked back into colour, and Simon brought his attention to the tertiary computer core diagnostics. "Connectivity is being queried. We have connection to the primary core, and the secondary. Running diagnostics and standard reports.
"Prioritise internal communications," commander Yarwood said, "We need to know what's happening throughout the ship."
"Yes, Sir. Preliminaries show a partial coverage. We have no access to some systems on decks five through seven. Transporters remain non responsive. Internal comms are limited to the remainder of the primary hull, there's some damage on the secondary hull section. I'm queuing it for engineering to investigate. No ventral sensors, or to port, and nothing on the secondary hull. Internals are scatty throughout the ship, we've fires on deck fifteen... no... now it's vacuum. Intermittent. I think it's a fault. Comm-badge repeaters are responding across the ship. Main power on secondary is critical, but climbing. Confirmed vacuum on deck seven. We've a hull breach in crew quarters. Force fields have failed; bulkheads are holding the atmosphere. Tractors are steady. Sickbay fully powered. No apparent damage to holo systems on any responding deck; confirmed 80% coverage. Main computer cores are aligned and within normal operating parameters. All standard reports are in progress and will shortly be available at your console, Sir. I will review and provide a summary of the engineering functions."
Simon sat back in his chair, blowing his relief into the air around him.
"Twenty minutes, Lieutenant." The commander replied, sternly.
"Yes, Sir."
The Emergency Medical Hologram buzzed back into existence on the bridge. He nodded to Clark, and then approached the center chair.
"If I may, Sir: how long have you been awake?"
"Is that a relevant question, Doctor?"
"All of the bridge crew have been under an immense amount of strain in the last few hours."
"What are you implying doctor? I would prefer it if you got to the point."
"Sir. You could all use a good rest, Sir. It's 5am. Let the Alpha shift have the bridge."
There was a long silence while Yaywood stared at the doctor. He opened his mouth to say something, and closed it again, his face turning a shade of red. For a moment, Clark thought he would issue another tirade against the doctor. He didn't. He swallowed, and sat back in the chair, closing his eyes. He didn't open them when he spoke. "Very well. Bridge, call your relief, and get some rest. Miak, wake Rivers, and have her do the same. Clark, you are going to need some assistance getting to sick bay. See that you get it. "Yarwood to Commander V'Maz," the commander tapped his badge.
Commander V'Maz pushed open the jeffries tube hatch alongside the turbolift doors. "V'Maz here,"
Yarwood turned to the doctor, an expression as severe as any he'd yet seen on Commander Yarwood, "I suppose you arranged this?"
"Coincidence, Sir," Doctor Reynolds replied, levelly.
"I came up as soon as the bulkheads cleared. You look... 'worse-for-wear'... I think the expression goes." He glanced around the bridge, taking it all in. He stepped forward, and put his hand on commander Yarwood's shoulder. "I'm sorry for your loss, Paul. What you said in your announcement... inspiring. The crew are living your words."
Commander Yarwood nodded, tears starting to form again in his eyes. He looks away while he wipes them with his fingers, and then snaps a salute. "You have the bridge, Commander,"
"Thank you, Commander. Let me know if you need anything. I'm sorry to say that your own quarters are unavailable at this time. I have taken the liberty of allocating you a space in the VIP quarters on deck three."
Yarwood nods again, and climbs into the jeffries tube.
V'Maz addressed the bridge, as Ensign rivers was brought out of the Admiral's ready room. "If I deard rightly, your relief will be here shortly. I'd like a brief update from each of your prior to their arrival. Your performance through this time has been exemplary, and it's thanks to you that we still have a ship to command. Good work. Clark, nice holograms. Unorthadox - I'd never have approved them. However, lives were saved, I'd like to review the idea for future use, in a less restrictive form."
"Yes, Sir. Thank you. I'm sorry if it caused hindrance, Sir."
Commander V'Maz nodded. "Lieutenant Miak, I'll take your input first, I'll join you at your station in a moment."
Around him, the presence of Commander V'Maz on the bridge was comfortably familiar, and he felt the atmosphere shift slightly. Confidence and surety were the marks of their first officer, and of the Admiral, somewhere on the starbase, who they had not yet been able to contact.

Event Day Fifteen - 09:45 hrs ::
It had been decided that the use of the tractor beams 'pushing' against the Starbase at this point was unwise, so the Raven would exit the dock and drop to her allocated position. She would use minimal thrusters to keep pace ahead of the Starbase, should the Sovereign Class Raven get into trouble, the El Salvador would use her tractor to keep the Raven in place for the duration, and with luck their efforts wouldn't affect their own stabilisation ahead of the 'base ... "Harry, time to impact ?" "Eight minutes Admiral." Wedlerson replied from Ops. "OK, Lysia, bring all phaser arrays on-line, forget photons." Carl ordered, "Widest possible beam, eighty percent power." They waited, listening to both the Command Center and the USS El Salvador as they too prepared. Minutes later Harry spoke: "Sir, the El Salvador has begun firing." "Very well, whenever you're ready Lieutenant." he said, glancing at T'Seng. As the first beams lanced from the raven into the countless micro-meteors, the screen began to almost glisten with pin-points of light, these increased constantly until the screen was a blue green red wash of incandescence, adjusting by the second to ensure no-one viewing would sustain injury. It was almost hypnotic to watch as the countless particles vanished from existence. "How's our position Commander ?" Carl asked the Helm Officer. "Holding Sir. I have increased thruster output by zero point zero three percent to compensate for phaser output." "Keep an eye on that, I don't want us falling back towards the Starbase. Harry, how is El Salvador doing ?" Wedlerson was about to reply when they heard from the Command Center: "Sir, we're reading a volume of micro-meteoroids behind the rest of the shower, of the highest density yet seen, almost to the level of tritanium in liquid state! It went undetected until now, partly because it was obscured by the more immediate shower, partly because the high density volume also consists of an unknown type of gas, 4.3% of which constituents are unrecognised exotic particles ... They seem to have masked the trailing high density patch; originally, they masked the whole particle shower ... That's why none of us detected it until it was virtually on top of us." =^= Admiral .. Commodore .. Did you get all that ? .. Direct your sensors to the tail of the shower - There's a volume of super-high density particles and exotic gases at the end of the shower's trail =^= "Concentrate all sensors on the area behind the main cloud." Carl said, still fascinated by the myriad of fluidic colour on the main view-screen, ".... and lets shut that off unless there's something else to look at." he said. "Scans confirm some unknown particles embedded within the gaseous cloud. But we're having trouble identifying some of the more exotic without attaining samples." Lieutenant Svensson said from the Science Station. "Well that's not going to happen." Carl said, but Svensson continued: "I am sorry Admiral, but if we fire on the unknown elements without knowing their precise makeup we could risk anything, they could ignite, or worse, explode causing a cascade self-destruction that would engulf the Starbase." Carl almost allowed his eye to roll, 'As if we don't have enough on our collective plates' he thought wryly, then continued: =^= Command .. Commodore .. did you get what my Science Officer just said ? =^= .......... [ Tag : Gheskori / Savot ][ Tag : All ]

She has to take a detour here and there but eventually Deis Irae arrives at the new quarters of the newest family of the El Salvador. Deis. Can i be speakin wi yer mum?
βMommy, thereβs a stranger at the door,β Grace Hood calls out as she hisses the door closed in Deisβ face. Sami-Jo Hood reactivates the doors a couple moments later.
βIβm so sorry about that,β Sami-Jo apologized, βwe teach her not to open the door to strangers. βPlease come in.β
Deis and Sami-Jo heading toward the dining area where Donna was playing with her food at the table. Grace was unsuccessfully hiding on the other side of the living area behind a chair, not so much out of fear, instead, spying on their conversation.
βShe gets that from her father,β Sami-Jo alluded to her husband, βsheβs very cautious and protective.β
Deis casually took in the Hoodβs quarters. Family photographs hung on the wall going back to the invention of photography, from both Sami-Joβs and her husbandβs families.
The doctorβs eyes came to rest on a Swedish longsword hanging on the wall. A plaque contained the inscription, βPassed down since the time of the Swedish Intervention in the Thirty Years' War from first born to first born. This longsword was wielded by the patriarch of the Hood family between 1630 and 1635 against the Holy Roman Empire.

Lieutenant Hood, prioritize your phaser fire on those groupings poised to hit the starbase in the most high-priority protection zones. In the absence of high-priority targets you may engage other particulate masses at your discretion. Prepare an opening phaser volley to thin the field before impact.
βYes, sir,β Hood called slightly over his shoulder. He powered the phaser banks and set the computer to filter out only the micrometeors that may threaten the ship. Though it was next to impossible for both the computer and him to miss, Hoodβs faith reservoir was in the shipβs reinforced tritanium alloy hull. He stood ready, not only to fire, but, to transfer power from the class IX-B warp core (salvaged from the previous El Salvador), to phasers or shields, if need be. What the El Salvador lacked in heavy firepower, it made up with by featuring advanced sensors and laboratory modules, being primarily, a science vessel.
βOur soul waiteth for YHVH: He is our Help and our Shieldβ¦β Hood muttered to himself.
Savot spoke calmly into the tense silence, "Mr. Hood, fire opening volley." And the 'battle', so to speak, was joined...
Both the computer and Hood began firing. The largest meteoroids deemed worthy for oblivion were selected and screened by the computer. Hood targeted and destroyed the smaller ones that still potentially posed a threat, but, were too small to be successfully targeted by the computer one hundred percent of the time.
The idea that the Excalibur-class honored the USS Excaliburβs 400 crew members killed in 2268 by the tragic M-5 wargame simulation creeped into Hoodβs mind. The computer was eventually beaten and deactivated by Captain James T. Kirk after he made the computer realize that it violated βthe laws of Man and God.β
Hood forced himself to clear his head and concentrate on the task at hand. An alarm alerted Hood that the sensors misread one large meteoroid as two smaller meteoroids, of which phasers would not be able to push or disintegrate. Being surrounded by super-highly dense particles and exotic gases, the computer must have misinterpreted its readings. Hood heard orders being given, whether to him or not, it did not register. He realized he did not have time to request permission and took the initiative.
<Tag Torek>
Hood needed an energy discharge from the main navigational deflector to push or break up the incoming meteoroid. He knew by the time he alerted the bridge crew to their situation, it would be too late. Hood jumped from his terminal and sprinted up the bridge, to his right, to the engineering station. Though smaller meteoroids were rocking the ship in his absence, he realized if there was any serious damage, it would be minimal, compared to the potential catastrophe he aimed to avoid. Nobody needed another catastrophe, not today.
To the shock of the engineer manning her station, Hood quickly bypassed the relays to activate the deflector beam powerful enough to divert the meteoroid. But, the automated systems rejected the overload, so Hood had to switch to manual control.
After sprinting back to his terminal and firing the deflector, the first attempt barely scratched the meteoroidβs surface, so Hood siphoned power from the warp core, transporters, replicators, and holodecks to secure enough energy. The second attempt was a success, breaking the meteoroid into two pieces, barely missing the El Salvador. If this had be any regular, high firepower combat or escort vessel, this operation would not have been successful or executed so quickly.

It was decided that both vessels would extend their shields and adopt a rotating frequency modulation to hopefully counteract the exotic particles found ... it was risky, but they had more than enough on their minds and this was a 'quick-fix' until they could establish the exact content, or at the very least a more informative knowledge ....
Both ships continued firing on the seemingly inexhaustible micro-meteors assaulting the Starbase. Some were getting through, some even making it into the Starbase and undoubtedly causing damage. Thankfully all personnel had been moved away from the outer perimeter so if there were any breaches in the 'base shields that caused decompression, no-one would be hurt and these breaches could be rectified when time permits.
Carl was informed that the El Salvador was using her main deflector dish to send out a pulse that would act on three larger meteors, these, anything but micro in nature could be seen trailing the larger band, and all three were on a direct impact course with the Starbase.
"Tactical ... Monitor the El Salvador's progress." he said, watching the dimmed view on their main screen, "Lock one of the phaser array's on the smaller of the three meteors and be ready to fire Lieutenant ....."
~~~~~
Long minutes passed as both vessels and arrays that rotated into view from the Starbase continued to fire. Wedlerson estimated the far side of the meteor shower was now approximately seven minutes away, and if they could hold out for that long there would only be residual stragglers to contend with, but he was worried that if they had discovered three larger, more destructive meteors, then there could be more trailing the main body, but scans could not penetrate beyond the micro-shower at present so it was impossible to prepare ...
"Commander Blakus. I'm reading fluctuations in our aft thrusters." Lieutenant Milyanov, the Deputy Chief Engineer suddenly informed them.
< Tag : Andae >
"Just make sure we stay in position, if we begin drifting again bring the impulse drive on-line and use that to hold us." Carl ordered. He looked again at the view-screen, frustrated at the fact that they were practically blind due to the shear number of micro-meteors being destroyed by the phasers, or impacting the now rotating shields, "Harry, see if you can something with the view-screen, I'd like to see what's going on out there." Something occurred to him and he spoke to Admiral Gheskori and Commodore Savot:
=^= Gentlemen .. Any thoughts on how we could implement a faster solution to our predicament ? .. .. .. My Operations Officer seems to be of the opinion that if we extend our distance ahead of the Starbase we could effectively drill a hole if you will through the main mass of the meteor shower which the Starbase could pass through =^=
He listened to both experienced Flag Officers ........
[El Salvador: Main Bridge]
Savot noted with satisfaction the calm and focus demonstrated by their new Tactical officer and returned his focus to the situation at large. He used his chair arm consoles to bring up duplicates of the visuals from both sensors and tactical, checking occasionally on the status of the Raven to ensure their comrade vessel wasn't suffering any loss of position and thus far there was no such issue. At the speeds they were all traveling there was a mere 1.3 second delay between their opening phaser volley and the shields of the 2 starships becoming peppered with incessant micrometeroidal impacts that flared and died out as quickly as they came. Savot saw that shield power was holding and the wedge formation of the shields did seem to be deflecting a good portion of the particles not destroyed either completely to the side of SB47 or at least into areas that should be free of possible casualties from the impacts and piercings...
The El Salvador's sensors, dealing not only with the cloud itself but also registering thousands of small hits and deflections across their screens took approximately 7.4 seconds longer to detect the same unfamiliar component material that Starbase 47 noted. The vulcan captain then blinked, arching an eyebrow as he saw Lt. Hood dash from the tactical station towards the engineering console without a word and while his instinct was to halt the officer, in the middle of this crisis that could possibly do more harm than good. As Savot tied his chair arm readouts into Tactical so he could resume weapons fire personally he noted the power alterations Hood was making to enhance the main deflector over the shoulder of Cadet Zhegras whose expression was surprised at the unexpected usurpation but as he was a superior and Senior officer the Tellarite did nothing but lean back to give him as much room as possible until he'd finished and dashed back to Tactical. Savot deactivated his remote access to the Tactical controls so Hood could perform the deflector strike he had presumably made the power modifications for.
Two beams pulsed outward from the El Salvador's deflector dish, the latter of the two succeeding in breaching the meteoroid sending each half spiraling to either side of both the ship and thereby the starbase behind them. The ongoing discourse between themselves, the Raven, and SB47 concluded that rotational shielding adjustments were the best bet for contending with impacts of these unknown composition pieces. "Mr. Hood, make the appropriate adjustments to our shields", Savot instructed and added as he saw the Raven's sensor data indicating a lock on the 3rd smallest of the larger bodies, "then concentrate fire on the Raven's target. Both ships' weapons in concert may be sufficient to disperse it."
Admiral Torek's voice came through over the open comm channel, =^=Gentlemen .. Any thoughts on how we could implement a faster solution to our predicament? .. .. .. My Operations Officer seems to be of the opinion that if we extend our distance ahead of the Starbase we could effectively drill a hole if you will through the main mass of the meteor shower which the Starbase could pass through =^=
Savot inclined his head slightly as he replied, =^=As the shockwave has already propelled us to a faster rate than we can achieve by our own means, the only way to increase the distance between ourselves and Starbase 47 would be for the station to apply sufficient thrust to lower their speed. If both the Raven and El Salvador were to generate deflector dish beams at opposing polarities targeted at identical coordinates, the counteracting repulsion effect may be capable of altering the incoming matter's trajectory sufficiently ahead of us that their new paths of travel would avoid impact with the base. Given our relative position beneath the Raven, the El Salvador can roll 180 degrees to better align our deflector for such an attempt.=^=
OOC: Catching up... +++ USS Enzio, In dock, Deck One, Main Bridge. Event +12 days.
"Commander Yarwood, we have an incoming transmission from Starbase operations. It's Admiral Gheskori."
"On Screen, Ensign Rivers."
Simon felt the mood lighten on the bridge as the familiar image of Admiral Gheskori peered through the mist of interference on the the bridge. He gave them all a thin smile.
"Admiral, it's good to see you again."
"Likewise, Paul. How are you holding up?"
Simon knew, like everyone else, that it was a double-barrelled question, and he saw the commander stiffen as he considered both his personal answer, and his commander's answer.
"We're keeping it together, Sir," the commander replied.
"That's good. Latest status report, commander?"
"Yes, Sir. Ensign Rivers, Lieutenant Clark, if you would. Crew and Damage report."
"Sir," Simon watched Alison dip her head to consult her console before she began, "Crew status: we confirm eleven KIA, and two further crew in critical condition in sick bay. All other injuries are healing or healed, with five crew relieved of active duty at present time. Most of us have been on double shifts for the last week with limited down time. Sick bay reports increased cases of stress related maladies, presently manageable. Once incident of physical disagreement between two crew members was dealt with by Commander V'Maz on yesterday's Alpha shift. We are... keeping it together, Sir," humour edged her tone, and Simon thought he saw the corners of the denobulan's cheek ridges lift slightly. Commander Yarwood was less impressed, and turned immediately to Simon.
"Lieutenant Clark. Full damage and repair report."
Simon was learning that commander Yarwood respected and utilised the skills and experience of his bridge team, and required of them that an up-to-date report on the status of their function be available at any time, both in data and voice format. For Simon, it was slightly nerve-wracking, and he was uncomfortable not only voicing his report, but in the feeling of having to poke his nose into his Gamma shift's business while they were working. Simon was also learning that their second officer was holding back a short temper behind a thin, stern, facade, so different from the man he had met just a few weeks ago when he joined this crew. With the computers back up and the ship connected, he had automated much of the information gathering, and limited the verbal status updates of each lead engineer to once every two hours. That said, this still gave him a full schedule of meetings over the comm, and he had had significantly less opportunity to focus on the repair tasks that he had allocated to himself than he would have liked, which he was finding somewhat frustrating. He wasn't expecting to give a full report to the Admiral, but he was prepared.
"Engineering reports emergency repairs are complete. Hull breaches are patched, 97% of the ship is aired, except on deck seven, where two sections are exposed to vacuum. All hazardous energy sources have been sealed and locked out until repairs can be addressed, including clearance of the debris surrounding the port dorsal nacelle.
"Main power is at 100%, with 92% power coverage throughout the ship, and some intermittent power anomalies on primary hull, mostly from plasma fires. Energy is being routed around damaged sections so they can be replaced. The Enzio is warp capable with an untested warp six safety limit, given the damage sustained. The primary engineering hull cannot warp independently, the starboard nacelle is fine, but there was some damage to the plasma conduits connecting it to the alpha core. Charlie core has been powered down. Primary fusion reactors are online throughout the ship, deuterium levels are at 20% on the secondary hull, we've not wanted to risk shunting the tanks internally without first checking for leaks. 100% coverage artificial gravity. Environmental systems at 95%, there's an oxygen processor damaged on deck eleven due for repair within the next two days.
"Computer systems are functioning within normal parameters. Holo-systems have 85% starship coverage, repairs are queued, but not yet scheduled. Forward tractor controls are offline, but holding steady under main computer control. Repairs are scheduled this morning. Thrusters at 60%, we took a lot of debris damage, repairs are queued. Shields are offline for repair, we lost port shield generators on the primary hull, and ventral and aft on the secondary. We have sufficient spare for one generator, the industrial replicators are offline, and we ruptured a metallic matter tank near cargo bay one. 80% of food replicators are online, reliability is patchy below deck eleven, and deck seven systems are offline. Internal sensors are intermittent and unreliable, I've got someone scheduled to look at the master controller tomorrow afternoon. Significant damage to the primary hull sensor systems ventral and port, and aft sensors are limited to the visual spectrum. Forward and dorsal sensors have been repaired, we are tracking the debris within the station and supporting the worker teams who are clearing it.
"Internal communications are online, excluding un-powered sections. Short range communications are online, and we've diverted some of the spare capacity in the comm-badge repeaters to support virtual networks within the starbase, facilitating communication in areas where the main systems have failed."
"That was you?" The Admiral interrupted, "I wondered where the improvement had come from,"
"Yes, sir. I've been thinking of a way to improve comm badge connectivity below deck sixteen twenty-one using shuttles as mobile repeaters."
"Interesting. We're still using hand communicators down there, there's a lot of feedback. Forward me the details, we'll take a look. Continue report."
"Transporters are offline. Scope of damage has not yet been ascertained. End damage report."
"Weapons?" The Admiral asked.
Simon had unintentionally omitted the weapon systems from his report. He fumbled through the various displays to find the one that was needed. In his haste, accidentally discarded it.
"Sir," Lieutenant Miak spoke from the tactical station, "I will report weapon status."
"Proceed, Lieutenant."
The Admiral's focus slid away from Simon while the other members of the bridge team gave their reports of the various functions, the admiral nodding as he listened, prompting the occasional question for the officers. The needs of Starbase operations had limited the time that had been available for the Admiral to learn of the status of the Enzio, this was the first set of full reports that had been issued in person since the Betreka event a week ago.
"A comprehensive set of reports, commander. Good work. By and by - I intend to get over there shortly... won't be long now."
"Yes, Sir. We look forward to having you aboard. Will there be anything else , Sir?" Commander Yarwood asked.
::Deis cannot help but let out a little laugh as the door snaps closed in her face. That is definately a first...and totally adorable. Good girl, that one. So there is a little halfsmile on her face when the door opens again.::
βIβm so sorry about that,β Sami-Jo apologized, βwe teach her not to open the door to strangers. βPlease come in.β βShe gets that from her father,β Sami-Jo alluded to her husband, βsheβs very cautious and protective.β
Dinna fash yerself...ahem...i mean dinna worry. Smart girl wi a good head on 'er shoulders. Thanks. ::And thus she follows the Wife inside, taking a good look around:: I see ye didna waste any time makin th space familiar. Good. More comfy tha way. ::The photos are one thing, one hell of a family record very well done...but then there is an actual honest to goodness sword. Yes she will probably get along with the new tactical officer though she owns no archaic weaponery of her own. She actually goes to ask about it and then remembers that she came here for a reason.:: Right. Im just to give ye three th standard physical scans, provide any innoculations necessary though i doubt any are. Confirm current medical information an th like. Shouldna take but a few moments o yer time. AN ye can introduce me t her daughters all proper so they dinna consider me a stranger. ::Actually chuckling again about that. Dawww. She takes the medical tricorder from the shoulder strap case.:: Who will be first?
<tag Hood> ============Present, Bridge===========
::Once Hood is dashing about, the Commander simply casts a quick glance back to the Captain with a little nod and raise of brow to indicate, "ill handle it.", before returning her attention to the job at hand. But quickly enough the Captain is speaking to the Admiral and others. She flashes an almost predatory grin when her favorite Vulcan gives the suggestion for a 180 degree roll. Sure, we dont feel the difference, but it still quietly tickles Deis to put herself belly to belly with another ship...even if they wernt bellied up that close. She dosent need his direct order to follow his commands, not after all the time shes served at his side. She simply goes to it. Giving a visible nod while hes speaking with others to indicate "180 roll acknowledged" and then making sure to maintain velocity and distance from the starbase without an increment of change, Deis slides her fingers over the console to tap two of them over the circular display to cast up the spherical holographic interface. This she places her hand inside and gently moves from palm down, to palm up, in a single smooth motion with no jarring suddenness. Again...it cannot be felt in a ship this large, but Deis fancies herself to have the tummy roll with it...there is nothing quite like helming a ship this size::
"Commander Blakus. I'm reading fluctuations in our aft thrusters." Lieutenant Milyanov, the Deputy Chief Engineer suddenly informed them.
Blakus was at the engineering console while his deputy had temporarily taken science - the officer whose station it was was indisposed in sickbay. He gripped the edge of his seat, feeling the vibrations through the deck along the Raven's longitudinal axis; he nodded, "She keeps wanting to jump ahead of us, the aft accelerating faster than the fore... now the other way round." He read a few more lines of data that streamed metaphorical lightspeed down the screen, worked the console, "Got it; thruster firings equalised."
"Just make sure we stay in position, if we begin drifting again bring the impulse drive on-line and use that to hold us." Carl ordered.
"Sir." Not long after, strain on the tritanium-deuterium chassis built up again for a few seconds as it was stretched by the uneven between fore and aft power distribution of the Raven's 'four wheel drive'. "Nothing we can't handle at the moment, though keeping us in one place over an extended period of time is going to be difficult, sir."
Fortunately, there was now good news in that respect, as Carl concocted a plan whereby they might create a gap in the field through which the Raven, El Salvador and lumbering Starbase might pass through unscathed... It necessitated a move forward by the Raven and El Sal, and thus there would be no need to keep the vessel in one place, though was such a thing possible? He didn't trust the PDNs to supply evenly or in accordance with their varying power supplies thrusters throughout the ship, and there might be issues with actually accelerating faster than the Starbase.
"Admiral, I should be able to do more from engineering," he informed Torek, the Admiral nodding. "Milyanov, take engineering station."
"Wait a minute, Andae. Where is Krall."
Blakus looked over his shoulder at the turbolift, "Well, as far as I know he's still in the conference room."
"Alone?"
"Yes, sir." Blakus's expression now contorted to convey a curious mixture of amusement and disgruntlement, "Yes, sir... alone." Growling at his forgetfulness (while also recalling he'd administered a gentle sedative to keep the Ferengi docile while in there) he strode over to the door of the conference room, remembering now that he'd locked it; releasing the lock, he made to stride in to check the Ferengi hadn't set about nefarious sabotage works or the like... but found his way blocked by the falling, collapsing form of Krall at his feet - the Ferengi rolled over onto his front on the threshold of the bridge, the face pale, almost albino-white... Comatose, medics would soon discover, not dead.
"How? The sedative...?" Blakus mused as gasps went up around the bridge. Thoughts occurred to him in rapid succession: an allergic reaction? unlikely; someone tampering with the sedating drink Andae had replicated for the Ferengi?; perhaps a fault with the replicator itself?; perhaps even Blakus had tampered with the drink unknowingly...? outlandish that last one, but he had to entertain all possibilities, even those whose flight through his mind was precipitated wholly by shock.
Torek continued, =^=My Operations Officer seems to be of the opinion that if we extend our distance ahead of the Starbase we could effectively drill a hole if you will through the main mass of the meteor shower which the Starbase could pass through =^=
"... the only way to increase the distance between ourselves and Starbase 47 would be for the station to apply sufficient thrust to lower their speed. If both the Raven and El Salvador were to generate deflector dish beams... Given our relative position beneath the Raven, the El Salvador can roll 180 degrees to better align our deflector for such an attempt.=^= Savot commented.
Ghes and Sato turned to each other in apprehension, before Tetsutaro spoke over the open comm, "Carl, we will proceed with your plan to cut through the field if we're able to ascertain thruster usage to slow the Starbase won't cause any irrevocable damage."
Ghes addressed Savot to elaborate on what Sato had implied, "Acknowledged, your suggestion, Commodore. Execute your roll, if you can keep yourself stable with respect to the Starbase and the micro-meteoroid cloud, in preparation for such an action. Note, however, that to use the Starbase thrusters to slow us at this stage - when simulations testing the feasibility of reducing acceleration using Starbase propulsion systems alone are still only in the early stages - constitutes or could constitute a significant risk to the base's dome superstructure and overall structural integrity."
They took a five minute recess from open communications with El Salvador and Raven, as specialists were called in from the various anterooms to Ops and from the floors below to discuss whether such an action could be attempted. Ghes took his place on the upper deck and let those with the knowledge go about their business; at least using this plan they might be able to reach the final stopping point of the Starbase sooner than expected, he thought.
A series of quick brainstorming meetings took place, conducted by some of the best minds in the sector - well, the sector that the Starbase had once held jurisdiction over, Ghes mused darkly - in the various rooms off Ops and in the workrooms of departments, the members of which reported to their respective senior officers stationed in Ops itself.
Now having ascertained readiness, they reopened the comm to the two vessels (one positioned above the dome's circumferential leading edge, tilted z+ very slightly; the other symmetrically opposite below the leading edge and inverted, also tilting in (its own) z+ so that - like the Raven - it aimed into the heart of the still-oncoming particle shower.
"Admiral, Commodore... Check your sensors, we're now slowing the Starbase's acceleration by 11 ms-2. Our velocity's still increasing, but to a lesser degree than your own," Ghes spoke.
"Acknowledged. We register increasing distance," one of the two vessels' CO's reported, both ships visible as grey specks on the expansive viewscreen.
"When ready begin emission from your nav deflectors into the centre of the shower; in tandem, at your discretion; may I also advise, if it becomes necessary, use of low-yield torpedoes to clear anything the deflectors may not be powerful enough to shift," Captain Beekes, one of the science-engineering technical staff, spoke from behind Ghes and Sato and over the three-way comm.
<Tag Raven, El Salvador>
"Once this is over I need to check by Mwv'mci. I need to check my ship," Ghes said hurriedly to Tetsutaro and marched past the Intelligence Director to starboard and the holodeck functionality panels of the environmental controllers' stations, of all places, leaving Sato slightly bemused.
Carl listened to the communication between the two vessels and Command, he'd almost begun to second guess his proposal, especially as there was no concrete evidence that it would even work, but finally the Section Admiral replied, giving them the go ahead for the attempt: "Put the El Salvador on screen." the view changed from the rainbow effect of the micro-meteors, to the massive Excalibur Class El Salvador almost two thousand meters below them. Everyone on the Bridge watched as the ship began an almost leisurely roll finally slowing to a stop when she was completely inverted. he tapped the Comm button on the arm of his chair: =^= Raven to El Salvador .. We are ready on your mark .. .. .. =^= "Forward view on screen please Harry." He waited, the distance between the two Starships and the Base increasing slowly, finally Commodore Savot gave the instruction, "Now Commander." he said to Lysia T'Seng at Tactical ... ~~~~~Both ships were now emitting enormous amounts of energy which slammed into the on-coming meteors eliminating them by the hundreds of thousands every second. Both ships continued to increase the distance from the Starbase and Carl could now see a small opening forming. Sensors confirmed but the opening was less than one hundred meters. Carl ordered an increased output from the deflector array, pushing it beyond normal operating parameters. If it should burn out then as long as the 'hole' was complete they could always replace the destroyed equipment, but they had to be careful for if it went off-line 'before' the opening was complete it could prove fatal for both the two vessels 'AND' the following helpless Starbase ! "El Salvador has increased their deflector output Admiral." T'Seng informed him. "How long before the opening is large enough to allow the Starbase to pass through unharmed ?" "Impossible to accurately compute Admiral." Lysia said, hands flirting over her panels, "But at the rate we are clearing the meteors and the rate of increase of the aperture, we should be able to ensure the Base can pass through in seventeen minutes. That is of course not allowing for any unidentified larger objects in our path that we cannot detect at this time." "Seventeen minutes." Carl repeated. "Aye Sir." "How's the El Salvador doing ?" he asked. "No changes reported as yet Admiral." Harry confirmed. "OK, make sure that all Communication channels, both to El Sal and the Starbase are maintained, it's vital we know the second anything begins to fluctuate." "Yes Sir." the Comms Officer replied. Carl sat in silence watching the 'hole' growing ever larger as both ships and the Starbase continually fired all their phaser array's into the maelstrom ahead ..........
[El Salvador: Main Bridge]
=^=Admiral, Commodore... Check your sensors, we're now slowing the Starbase's acceleration by 11 ms-2. Our velocity's still increasing, but to a lesser degree than your own=^=, Section Admiral Gheskori spoke from the starbase. Savot knew it was unnecessary to confirm but did so anyway to be on the safe side, glancing down to his chair's sensor readouts with icons representing both external starships and the station they preceded. "Acknowledged. We register increasing distance", the vulcan captain confirmed as Deis brought the ship deftly into a rotated position with their belly now facing upward towards the Raven's.
=^= Raven to El Salvador .. We are ready on your mark .. .. .. =^=, came the efficient response from their fellow vessel. Savot confirmed that their deflector beam was set to an exact opposite of the Raven's beam's polarity, then gave Hood the order, "Commence deflector fire."
The beams met in space, coming in at angles that formed a vertical wedge in the not-so-vacant vacuum... and Savot was relieved to see that despite encountering forms and gasses of unfamiliar composition, that at least the universe laws still seemed to govern as they should. The opposing polarities created a repulsion field at the point of intersect that simply made it impossible for any matter to occupy that area thereby insisting that it move to the nearest available space to the sides of the repulsion field. It looked rather like someone pushing a large stone with a mildly pointed front through a field of sand, shunting the sand to either side and leaving a smoothened path behind the stone, only this stone was a force of science and it was being 'pushed' by the power output of 2 struggling space vessels.
Savot kept a close vigil over the sensor readings, looking especially close at the estimated paths of the shunted material and comparing them to Starbase 47's partially slowed approach... and it looked promising, barring any further disaster. The vulcan captain took preparatory steps to do his best to ensure no further disaster occurred, =^=Savot to Engineering, maintain power surplus to the Main Deflector. Indications of overload?=^=
Commander Delbridge's voice rang in response over the ship's intercoms, =^=Negative, boss. The bio-linear chips are handling the load nicely. The emitters themselves will burn out if we maintain this intensity but I should be able to give you at least 20 more minutes.=^=
The following 17 minutes were both shorter and longer than many of the participants expected. A very few men, women, and beings performing constant effort at a frantic but controlled pace, while others had naught to do but look on and wait in hopeful anticipation. Finally, when both nerves and ship components approached yet new breaking points and were having to draw from 3rd or 4th winds... phaser fire ceased. First from the Tactical officers of the Raven and El Salvador, and then from the Starbase trailing them. The deflector beams continued for another several seconds as Captains as sensor officers double-checked each others' readings until at last each of them could let out a proverbial sigh of relief in whatever manner they felt would best express it. Savot's countenance was neutral aside from a slowed blink and slight swelling of his chest from an extended silent inhalation, "Discontinue deflector beam, Lieutenant Hood. Commander Irae, return the ship to its previous rotation."
He then keyed the open channel between the Raven and SB47, =^=Admirals, long range sensors detect no further impediment within range. We will maintain a vigil for any new threats and begin immediate study of the readings from the unfamiliar substances we all registered. My personal commendations to you and your crews, sirs. El Salvador has suffered no further critical damage or casualties; our medical staff are available should the station or any other vessel require additional hands for treatment, Commodore Savot out.=^=
The now less threatening starfield swam past the vessels and starbase as they continued forward on the velocity insisted upon them by the nebula explosion. Perhaps the greatest calamity ever faced by the Section 47 fleet... followed almost immediately by another imminent doom... and they had weathered it yet again. All hoped, silently or in commiseration with their fellows, that their next challenge would come only when the time came to fully arrest Starbase 47's momentum. That prospect alone was fraught with risk, but for right now, for this moment in cosmic history with unparalleled endurance of both body and spirit, and luck, the S47 survivors had survived another day.
With both ships working together they had managed, albeit barely, to make enough of an opening for all but the lower thirty one levels of the Starbase to pass through. Those levels, now sealed off, would receive attention over the coming weeks ... Command had watched events unfold, thankful that they had escaped with relatively little damage. =^= Admirals .. Long range sensors detect no further impediment within range .. We will maintain a vigil for any new threats and begin immediate study of the readings from the unfamiliar substances we all registered .. My personal commendations to you and your crews Sirs .. El Salvador has suffered no further critical damage or casualties; our Medical Staff are available should the station or any other vessel require additional hands for treatment .. Commodore Savot out =^= =^= Tetsutaro to El Salvador and Raven .. Congratulations to both vessels on an excellent job .. Admiral Torek .. Your vessel is still in need of some vital repairs .. Please re-enter the Dome when possible .. Commodore Savot .. Given your stating you are in no immediate need of assistance you may decide on remaining ahead of the Starbase or taking this opportunity to also dock .. Our long-range sensors are sufficient to ensure we pick up anything ahead in good time .. The option is yours Commodore .. Raven we will expect you shortly .. Thank you to both and your stellar crews .. Tetsutaro out =^= "Commander Marionette, contact the dock-master and begin our return ... I'll be in my Ready Room ... Andae you have the Bridge ..... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Please Note : We are now jumping ahead approximately SIXTY DAYS * ..... EVENT DAY SEVENTY TWO .. SD: 2403.00.0501 ..... Starbase Velocity : 0.183c ..... Distance Travelled : 5.84 x 108 Kilometres ..... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Over the last two months much work had been done on the enormous Starbase. While life was not by any means getting 'back to normal' there was a sense that the survivors had now in the most part at least, come to terms with their predicament. Several vessels were now fully operational, these included: USS El Salvador-C USS Enzio USS Raven-C USS Maracanda
and three smaller vessels. Due to excessive strains on the superstructure of the four kilometer long Starbase, it had been decided to slow the rate of rotation minimally rather than cause more damage by rushing. Starbase forty Seven was still travelling at a almost unimaginable speed, triangulation with nearby Star clusters set their forward velocity at point one eight 2wo 'c' and they had travelled almost eight thousand light years, the initial shockwave moving the Base almost half that distance in the first month, but now they were slowing, not fast enough by any means, and it was the now the highest priority ... The four Starships: El Salvador, Enzio, Raven, and Maracanda, were taking turns positioning themselves before the on-rushing Starbase:
The Raven was ten thousand meters ahead of the Starbase and due to be relieved by the El Salvador in three hours. It had become something of a routine ,though not in the general sense, given the unknowns that could be before them. Commander Wedlerson was on duty on the Bridge when T'Seng asked his advice. Harry got up and approached the Tactical Station: "What do we have Lysia ?" "Long-range sensors are picking up something, or rather, they are detecting something beyond our maximum scanning range." the Tactical Officer said as Harry leaned in, adjusting the sensor calibration to see if he could get more information, "It's not even showing as 'anything' let alone something we can categorise, it's strange." "Maybe the Starbase has more information." Harry said, mulling the problem over. "Sir. The Enzio has the new long-range array's fitted. We were due them at the next refit but ...." Wedlerson nodded then returned to the center seat. "Comms, open a channel to Command." seconds later Admiral Tetsutaro appeared on the viewscreen: =^= Raven .. How are things over there Commander ? =^= the aged Japanese Admiral asked. =^= Admiral .. .. We are picking up something just outside our maximum scan range for the sensors .. I believe the USS Enzio is fitted with the new sensor array's .. I would like to request she join us out here =^= =^= The El Salvador is due to relieve you is it not Commander ? =^= =^= Yes Sir .. But she is fitted with the sane array's as we are =^= =^= You feel we could be in danger Commander ? =^= =^= No way to tell at this point Admiral =^= Harry said, wishing the Admiral would just allow his request, bureaucracy certainly hadn't got any better even this far out he mused. =^= Very well .. I will instruct the Enzio to follow the El Salvador out to meet you Commander .. We shall monitor your readings from here .. .. Out =^= All he could do now was wait for the Enzio ..........
