Mann on transporting all wounded to the base's medical facilities. Once this is done there R&R will commence, Santos out=^=
Everyone on the bridge stopped speaking when Ephrem began to make his announcement. When he finished, they went back to work again much to his dismay.
"Excuse me, didn't I order everyone to take a couple days off?" Ephrem asked getting from the center seat and looking at his bridge staff.
"Yes, sir, but we have work to do," Yeoman Rose replied from under a station.
"Yeoman get out from under there," Ephrem ordered," I wasn't joking, I want all of you to stop what ever you are doing. Leave instructions for repair teams and go take a break. Is that understood?"
"Aye sir," was the unison response.
"Barbara, please tell Mira and John to join me in the Conference room at 2000 hours, we'll need to talk about a few things," Ephrem said as he began to usher out his entire crew.

"...and an update on Wundt's condition as soon as you've got it," requested John.
The CMO, a Commander, nodded quickly. "Of course, Lieutenant. I'll be glad to provide all you have requested. Nurse Wundt is expected to recover, though I'm afraid he must be pulled from active duty for at least four months. I'll have the report sent to you after I've finished reviewing your injured."
"Thank you," replied John. "I've got to run, but if you need anything here help yourself. When should I meet with you to compare reports?"
"Tomorrow, whenever is best for you," replied the doctor. "Get some rest, and I'll be waiting in Sickbay whenever you can spare a minute."
Several meters away, a man in a medical uniform with the pips of a Lt. Commander spoke quietly with Ben Navidomskis. "We feel it unsafe to trust him due to his proximity with his last superior officer. She's been nothing but pain at HQ, from what I'm told."
Ben scoffed. "You can't be serious. I'll watch him, of course, but John's harmless."
"That's what I was told about his cousin. Oddly enough, he's made over a dozen trips to Romulan space in the last decade." He held up his hands as Ben began to object. "I know, I know, black sheep of the family and all. Still, we might be forced to use this one as bait. I'll keep you posted."

"Mira!" Mira turned when she heard her name being called, wondering who would be calling for her. John had gone off about his business, checking up on the wounded that had been sent to the starbase. Personally, Mira had gone aboard the base to get a change of scenery and just to have a long walk. She hadn't expected to find anyone even remotely familiar to her aboard the base.
"Mira!" There was the voice again, but she had yet to locate it. Then, a copper-haired young man came charging up to her, sweeping her off her feet in a strong hug. "What're you doing here?"
Mira stared up in her twin's grey eyes, then smiled. "I could ask you the same question Francis," she retorted, then pointed in the direction she had come from. "My ship's docked here for repairs."
"Mine too," Francis replied, releasing his sister from his hug. Then he cupped her chin in his hand and studied her face. "Something's bothering you sis," he said earnestly, "c'mon, spill it to your brother. What's bugging you?"
That's where Mira broke down to tears, sobbing quietly on her brother's shoulder as she told him of the loss of a beloved captain, her earlier adventures and the lack of proper relaxation. "And what of that bloke of yours?" Francis querried, putting her at arm's length, "he any good to you? He'd better be you know, or he'll be dealing with me."
At that moment, Mira's communicator went off and she flipped it open in one fluid movement after retrieving it from her uniform. "Chief Green," she answered, "go ahead ma'am."
"Captain Santos wants you in his office at 2000 hours," Barbara replied, "don't be late chief."
"Acknowledged," Mira replied, before snapping the communicator shut. Wide-eyed, she stared at her twin. "Now what would he want with me?" she wondered aloud, then gasped. "Oh no, I hope it's not about that incident in weapons control."
"What incident?" Francis wanted to know, then listened with growing amazement as she told him. "You struck a senior officer? Oh my god, Mira that's a court martial offense! At least, it is among officers, but you're not an officer yet...you're only 18 years old."
"19, where the captain's concerned," Mira answered timidly, "and just when I wanted to tell Captain James, he was lost in action." Tears welled up again, but she fought them bravely. "Coming? I'd like you to meet John, so you can see for yourself how good he is to me. And before you ask, he's 22 years old, and a very good doctor. He's saved my life numerous times now."
Francis smiled wickedly. "Only because you want him to keep saving you," he smirked.
"Well, I'm meeting John for breakfast tomorrow, but you're staying with me tonight. We've a lot of catching up to do!" Mira hadn't seen her brother since joining the Excalibur, nor had she been in touch with her other family members. "I've got a meeting with the captain now, it seems. You want to wait in my quarters?" At her twin's nod, they walked back to the Excalibur, where Francis was told to wait in the chief's quarters.
Mira, meanwhile had found her way to the captain's office. "You wanted to see me sir?" she asked timidly, as she shuffled into his office, then snapped to attention as she remembered proper protocol. "Chief Petty Officer Mira Elaine Green reporting as ordered, sir!" she stated smartly, waiting to be told to relax.

"A penitent individual," remarked the Vulcan standing before Kylee Christiansen. "Though I must deny your transfer request. Doctor Mann has already lost one of his top three nurses, and I cannot excuse you to see your sibling's wedding." The young woman nodded and stood up, ready to leave. "If you would give this to Doctor Mann," added the elderly Vulcan quickly, producing a small electronic chip, the sort of which Kylee had never seen before, "I would be... forced to reevaluate the situation and see if certain regulations might be... deemed inappropriate in this special case."
Kylee paused in mid-motion. "Of course," she said, taking the small object in her hand and pocketing it. "Thank you, Commander."
"I'm terribly sorry," said the vulcan with an uncharacteristic and forced wink.
***************************************************
"You should recieve Wundt's replacement within the week. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask."
John thanked the CMO of the Starbase once more before heading back for the Excalibur. He arrived after Mira, who was standing at attention, and waited behind her to be noticed.

Walking around port, duke took some interest in the new ship that had arrived, it was his assignment the USS Excalibur. Looking out of the port window he could see the lavish texture of constitution class. It was particularly huge, duke loved looking at the USS Excalibur. After it had arrived Duke made a careful approach to the docking bay doors. The doors had opened, and he walked into the ship.
Seeing the crew he had noticed some were very preoccupied with there duties. Then momentarily he had heard something on speaker "=^=Attention all hands this the Captain. We have arrived at port. All crew except medical teams are hereby ordered to take a couple days off. All medical teams will coordinate with Lt. Mann on transporting all wounded to the base's medical facilities. Once this is done there R&R will commence, Santos out=^=", hearing this duke was interested in making his way to meet the captain, but then again he was a busy man.
Walking around he later bumped into a chief petty officer. He did not know her name, "Excuse me Petty Officer, respectly request your last name, im new to the excalibur and i am meaning to meet the captain, it is also nice to meet you" duke smiled.

before Mira glanced up to see the ensign stare down on her. "I'm Chief Petty Officer Mira Green," she introduced herself with a grin, "Excalibur's tactical and navigations officer. You are?"
She checked her chonometer while McCalister introduced herself. "If you want to chat, you'll have to walk with me sir I have been called to see the captain."
Another smile lit up her young but troubled face. "Perhaps you'd like to come with me, then I can introduce you to the captain and you can report in for duty at the same time."
Mira rattled on and on about how new Santos was to being a captain, and compared him to the previous CO's she had served with. "He's pretty young, really new to command but also setting in quite well. He's very easy going, you'll like him quite well."

Answering the chief's reply, "My name is Duke McCalister, I will be the new Chief Security Officer, assigned to the USS Excalibur, im glad to be part of the crew rather and i like the look of the ship being that it is a constitution, we are on a prime ship at that"
Listening to her reply again after he made his response, Duke followed the Chief so that he could introduce himself to the captain. "Sounds like this me and him could get along well. I'd very much appreciate to meet the captain and to see what the plans are of the current situation." The two of them proceeded along.

He had ordered them to leave the ship and he was pleased to know that they had listened to him. They had resisted at first, but in the end they listened.
"Computer what time is it?" Ephrem asked as he finished compiling his briefing report.
"1945 hours"
"Damn!" Ephrem said hoping that he would have more time to prepare. He had already received mission orders and they would be departing within the week. About five minutes later Mira and an acting Ensign walked into the conference room.
"Mira you're early," Ephrem said before he attended to the newest member of his staff," I presume you are Duke McCalister?"
(Mira and Duke)
"Well I suggest you take a seat and get something to drink, we will begin once John arrives," Ephrem said as he tried to hide the fact that he was working on the mission briefing.

With Captain Santos attending to one of his meetings he had wanted mira to be there as well as Duke, presently they had arrived earlier than expected, and the captain was suprised.
Duke nodded to the captain. "You are correct sir, I am Duke McCalister, I will be your new Chief Security Officer assigned to this beautiful ship of yours. I must say your crew has done a marvelous job at that of keeping it looking tip top shape." McCalister motioned to the Captain.
"Indeed i shall get something to drink captain, im a bit parched at the moment, do you have any synthesizers nearby." Looking around duke went to try and find a synthesizer and to his amazement there was one in the meeting room.
Duke walked to one of them and pull out his disk and inserted it into the synthesizer, a few seconds later a drink came out. Taking the drink duke walked back to the table and sat with the Captain and Mira. John would later arrive but in the mean time Captain Santos was getting his things together for the mission that was to take place.

"Here, Captain," replied John, the door sliding shut behind him. "I'm happy to report that everything I need to worry about is being taken care of by the station's CMO." He sat down next to Mira and finally took notice of the unfamiliar officer, but didn't ask any questions.
OOC: I was already here, but whatever... hope your brother had/has fun at his graduation, Lorian.

Seeing that John had arrived at the meeting was good news, everyone seemed to be here, and nothing was going wrong (at least he hoped nothing was going to go wrong).
Duke smiled at John and nodded to him without disturbing the meeting, knowing all well that the captain had something planned for them.
Duke stretched a little but enjoyed sitting in the room full of staff members and new crew that he had not met.
This was one of those experiences that McCalister would not want to forget. Breathing and then getting comfortable in his chair he looked over at the captain and waited for him to begin.
After getting situated he drank some more of the drink he had and listened intently.

Everyone had arrived and it was time to get this little meeting out of the way. Normally he would have done the mission briefing a lot later, but he wanted them to enjoy themselves as much as possible.
"I don't know if any of you know anything about Federation politics," Ephrem began as he showed everyone a picture of two human men," these are Theavis Jamal and Matthew Biko. They are the front runners in this years Presidential election."
Ephrem took this moment to give them each a padd on all known information about both men. He wanted them all to be acquainted as possible when they arrived.
"For some idiotic reason, they have both decided to tour new Federation planets and they have both agreed that Archanis IV will be there final destination," Ephrem said," and we are the ship that is going to transport them to Archanis."
"As you know the Archanis system is dangerously close to the Klingon border, we don't anticipate any problems, but Starfleet wants the added protection of a veteran crew. We are going to be on high alert for the entire duration of the mission and we are going to provide security while they are down on the planet."
(All)
"One...well two more things," Ephrem said glad that he would be able to do this now," Doctor Mann, if you still want the job of executive officer it is yours to keep. No more acting first officer."
(John)
"Also Mr. McCalister, this just came in today," Ephrem said as he passed the young man his new ensign rank," congratulations."

We are going to be on high alert for the entire duration of the mission and we are going to provide security while they are down on the planet."
"I take it you want weapons checked out then, as well as general defensive systems?" Mira piped in, when Santos finished his briefing, "my maintenance teams are currently repairing the shields, but weapons may take a little longer. They took quite a beating last mission, and one of our torpedo tubes has ended up misaligned."
The teen shuddered at mentioning the torpedo tubes, remembering vididly the time she was nearly shot out of one during a Romulan attack.
"One...well two more things," Ephrem said glad that he would be able to do this now," Doctor Mann, if you still want the job of executive officer it is yours to keep. No more acting first officer."
"Oooh!" Mira exclaimed, promptly hugging the young doctor, "you're going to take on the offer aren't you? Promotions of this kind are very rare I heard. Doctor and first officer.....you know usually this post goes to the science chief right? You should take it John, you've worked very hard for this!"
She ignored the fact that this was hardly proper decorum; an enlisted crewman hugging an officer, especially in front of other officers. It didn't even matter the two were involved.
"Also Mr. McCalister, this just came in today," Ephrem said as he passed the young man his new ensign rank," congratulations."
Mira beamed. "More good news," she laughed, as she sat back in her seat. Then her smile vanished and her good mood swung over into excited apprehension. "When do we leave?" she querried, wondering what would happen so close to Klingon space. Her face turned especially sour when the memory of Klingons reminded her of Captain James, and his friendship with certain Klingon officials, and of him teaching her Klingon fighting techniques. She still cherished the bat'leth he had made for her, while he taught her to fight like a Klingon.

Duke was getting interested in the meeting as it had further developed and there was some news for them all to hear. The Captain spoke.
("For some idiotic reason, they have both decided to tour new Federation planets and they have both agreed that Archanis IV will be there final destination," Ephrem said," and we are the ship that is going to transport them to Archanis.") - Captain Santos
("As you know the Archanis system is dangerously close to the Klingon border, we don't anticipate any problems, but Starfleet wants the added protection of a veteran crew. We are going to be on high alert for the entire duration of the mission and we are going to provide security while they are down on the planet.") - Captain Santos
The Captain spoke for a while about what was going to happen and it concerned two men and the location Archanis IV. Hearing the information duke was a little stunned as to this being a possible klingon conflict but that was up to that captain and the ships helm officer.
After having received the PaDD from the Captain, Duke took some time to look it over and speculate as to the security of the ships crew and the two named Theavis Jamal and Matthew Biko.
They of course wanted to both win the presidential election and it was up to the USS Excalibur and her crew to save the day if there were to be a problem, hopefully there wouldn't be.
Hearing the captain again it also seemed that he was rather pleasant to this news. Lt. jg. John Mann would be the executive officer of the ship, a very important position on any starfleet vessel second to commanding officer of the ship, which was the captain's duty.
Duke congratulated Doctor Mann on this new career change, and gave him a firm handshake along with a reply "Even though i haven't known you that long, it would be an honor to have you as our XO" duke later sat back down for the captain had some more news.
("Also Mr. McCalister, this just came in today," Ephrem said as he passed the young man his new ensign rank," congratulations.") - Captain Santos
Ensign Duke McCalister stood up and walked forward to Captain santos, "Thank you sir, i will continue to do my best working alongside you and the crew" duke replied then carefully took his new rank and sat back down, after the meeting duke would go to his compartment and get his rank sewn on properly.

John grinned and returned the embrace. "I need to get Sickbay set away, but I'll gladly take the promotion."
After McCalister congradulated John on his promotion and shook his hand, the roles were reversed as Duke was also promoted. Mira's inquiry, "When do we leave?" brought John back to earth... figuratively.
"Not for a few days, I hope," said John, wondering how long it would take to get Sickbay a new CMO.

Ephrem was pleased when John accepted the promotion to first officer. The young doctor had more than proven his worth during there last mission. He successfully transitioned himself to the bridge crew and was still able to deal with casualties that numbered in the dozens. Ephrem would work hard to get a commendation for the doctor, but the promotion to first officer was a step in the right direction.
"When do we leave?"
"Not for a few days, I hope," said John, wondering how long it would take to get Sickbay a new CMO.
"That all depends," Ephrem said with a bit of agitation," we will leave when they arrive. It shouldn't take more than a few days, but it could take a few weeks or more."

"Oh jolly," Mira muttered upon hearing the mention of training. "Training for what exactly, don't we get enough of that during missions while we change the bad guys across our ship or the universe?" She threw up her hands in exhasperation, then walked out of the meetingroom. They were, after all dismissed to their free time.
Mira was fully intent on enjoying her shoreleave, hoping John would accompany her. Though when she saw the look on his face she already knew he would be spending time with his injured medical officer. She understood his need to do that, they were after all friends. Instead, she walked off the ship alone and spent a few long hours roaming the starbase.
At one point however, she came across what appeared to be a barfight gone awry. Pulling her phaser she marched over and fired one shot into the air. "Break it up!" she snapped, pulling one of the fighting parties aside. As a reward, the other fighter stormed at her and punched her hard in the abdomen. Mira doubled over in pain, coughing as she tried to breathe. When she recovered, the two parties were once more fighting. This time, she aimed her phaser, set on the lowest stun setting, at the one who had punched her.
"I said break it up!" she ordered. As she was still in uniform, in essence she was entitled to break up a fight. Yet the fighters took no notice of her, until she shot at one of them. "Enough!" she yelled at both, then glared at the gathered spectators. "Fun is over, return to your leisures or your duties!"
At that moment, base security arrived. "What is going on here?"
"She shot me," the fallen fighter said, casting a sly smile at the young Excalibur navigator. "We was just having a little fun when she poked her nose in and shot me."
"That is not true," Mira retorted, "they were having a rough fight and I tried to break it up. When he attacked me instead, I stunned him." She handed her phaser over when the security guard held out his hand towards her. "Lowest stun setting," she explained.
"She provoked me," the fighter argued, "we was just having a friendly argument, wasn't we?"
The other fighter nodded, though he didn't seem too eager to do so. "Yes, she provoked him. She fired first before he defended himself. She fired twice...once before he defended himself and once after." Several spectators nodded their assent; after all their fun had been disrupted, and all bets were now off.
The guard glared down at Mira. "Your commanding officer will hear of this," he commented as he took hold of the young woman as he took her into custody, "until then, I believe shoreleave is over for you and you are safer in my brig than out here."
Mira didn't understand what was going on, though she went with the commander without argument. Yet she broke down in tears once she heard the forcefield snap into place behind her, after he had pushed her into the nearest vacant cell.
"Commander Thomas McGee to USS Excalibur," the commander called into his communications unit, "I am looking for the commanding officer. I have one of his crew here in my custody. Please respond."

John had not reached Sickbay before he was intercepted by Kylee Anderson and a small computer chip. She hurried away without an explanation back the way she had come. Puzzled, the doctor continued toward Sickbay and loaded the chip into his workstation. The room was empty save for one lone nurse sitting near the far wall, reading an old paper book. John fumbled around, trying to find out where the chip was supposed to go, and finally got it into the right slot. He wasn't sure why computers had to be so complicated...
As the program loaded, he gathered what few personal belongings he had, ready to take them to his quarters. When he looked back at the screen he nearly dropped everything. The message was from Starfleet HQ and was very well encrypted. John entered his serial number, full name, and authorization code as prompted before the message opened. It was very short.
I'm pleased with your performance this far, John. Life here can often be dull, and I always enjoy checking in on old friends. However, recent events have prompted me to contact you directly. I'm afraid there is something terribly wrong with someone here. I can't say anything specific, in the likely case that this message fails to reach you before being corrupted. All I can legally declare is that you may be in danger in the near future, or at any time in the next few years. When the time comes - and you will recognize it when it does - do not trust anyone. Not your family, not your medical staff, not your superiors. I'm not saying you should ignore or disobey anyone at that time, but be cautious. I had a friend run background checks; you can trust Santos, Green, and Anderson. Benjamin Navidomskis is no longer your friend, John. Do not let him see this letter. If you are in Sickbay, follow my instructions to erase this completely from the computer's memory. Again, I apologize for being so vague. I'll be in touch periodically. Stay Safe - Kwani
John re-read the letter twice before erasing it. He didn't move for a while, his mind unable to fully comprehend everything Kwani had told him. What was his old CMO telling him? John Mann was a fairly bland officer when it came to politics and in-house fighting. He didn't understand half of what Kwani had told him. Yet one thing was clear. If she thought he could be in danger, he wasn't going to doubt her. John stood up and headed for the Starbase to find Mira.
****************************************************
John entered the vacant Bridge, looking for Santos to officially inform him he was leaving the ship. He failed to locate the Captain, and assumed he was gone. Just as the doctor was entering the turbolift, a voice cut across the Bridge.
=^=Commander Thomas McGee to USS Excalibur. I am looking for the commanding officer. I have one of his crew here in my custody. Please respond.=^=
Seeing as how there was no one else in sight, John took the call. "I think you haven't been informed, Commander. This ship is almost completely devoid of the regular crew at the moment. I'm the CMO - well, XO now - of the Excalibur. The Captain is not available at the moment. How may I help?"
There was a slight pause. =^=Your crewmember fired a weapon on an unarmed civilian. I have her in the brig at the moment. The phaser was on its lowest setting, so I doubt she meant any real harm. Still, this action is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated on this Starbase.=^=
"That... that sounds reasonable," agreed John, confused. "Can you get me a report of the incident?"
=^=Of course. I'll have it sent over with Miss... hold on...=^= There was a moment of silence, and John yawned. He hoped the Excalibur didn't go anywhere soon. A week of relaxation sounded wonderful at the moment. =^= ...with Miss Green. McGee ou- =^=
John sputtered into the communication. "I'm sorry, who did you say? Mira Green is in your brig?"
=^= Have you had problems with her before?=^=
There must have been something wrong with his hearing, but he was wide awake now. "Look, I'm coming down there, Commander, and maybe we can sort this all out. But I can guarantee that Mira Green is innocent and should not be in that brig. I'll be there in a minute. Excalibur out."

[green]"That all depends," Ephrem said with a bit of agitation," we will leave when they arrive. It shouldn't take more than a few days, but it could take a few weeks or more."[/green]
Listening to the captain and chewing on the food that he had beside him, Duke was interested in the mission and thought about the few days wait or even a few weeks. This could give him some time to get some more training time in the Security Office and manage the personnel there while they wait for them to arrive. This was good and Duke nodded with delight at this mention and continued on with his chewing of food and closely listening to new news from the captain.
[green]"If we end up staying for a few weeks, I'll begin training sessions for the entire crew," Ephrem said," I want us to be prepared for anything."[/green]
"Very good idea sir, and i totally agree with this and will have the security crew ready for training when able." Duke replied, then casually sat back in his chair analyzing the data on the two president candidates.

[green]The guard glared down at Mira.
Please respond."[/green]
Walking out of the conference room Duke walked up to Commander Thomas and noticed that something had not been right so in the mean time he striked up conversation. "Sir, what happens to be the problem?" nodding with the answer from the commander Duke was a little shaken, "This is not good, i will be down there to help out." he replied then made it on his way to the turbolift to head to the brig.
After arriving the XO had received the news from the Commander along with Mira looking at Duke and Mann akwardly. Duke walked up to one of the security personnel in the brig and replied. "Please explain the situation to me fully and let me also have the Mira's explaination, im sure this will all be settled out." Then walking up to Mira, "I have talked to Security who his holding you right now and they have explained to me about what happened, can you tell me your end?"

Mira wasn't sure if she wanted to tell her story yet another time. She had explained it to Thomas first, then Francis had come to visit her and demanded to know what had happened, and now McCallister wanted to know as well. She sighed, having the distinct feeling she was going to tell him anyhow, willingly or not. She decided willingly would be the better option.
"Well, I was walking down the promenade to meet with my brother for the afternoon, when I came across what looked to be a bar fight. Nobody was stepping in, no actually everyone was cheering the two fighters on. As public fighting is prohibited on the station, and security was not yet anywhere in sight, I felt the need to step in. I called out to them to quit their activities but they apparently did not hear me."
Mira paused to take a few deep breaths and started pacing her cell. She glanced from Mann to McCallister, then back to Mann. She felt miserable as she saw the look of disappointment and disbelief on his face. "When they didn't respond, I fired my phaser once, into the air, hoping the sound would attract their attention. When it did not, I tried pulling them apart. One of them punched me..." The teen raised her tunic to show them the nasty bruise she'd been hiding. "It still hurts, very much. I spent at least a minute trying to breathe again as he punched so hard it knocked the air from my lungs."
She paused again as she lowered her tunic again and straightened her uniform. "That was when I stunned him. He attacked me when I tried to break up their illegal fight."

"Well, if it was illegal and you were merely trying to break it up i see no reason why you should be in the brig right now. I will have security get this under control and have you back with us and seeing as the XO is here he might be able to clear this whole mess up and see to it that nothing happened, but you never know" Duke replied and walked across the room over to the cell that Mira had been originally placed in.
"For now i gotta get some training done with my security detail and have them prepped and ready for the two president candidate that are supposed to arrive soon. I want to make sure they are properly settled in and will be able to have a safe trip to there destination, so for now, i must bid you farewell and i will see you on the bridge with the rest of the crew." mccalister replied after cleaning up the areas in the brig.
Then he made his way out the door and called for his security detail to meet him at the hangar bay for some preparatory exercises.

McGee glared at the back of McCalister as the officer walked away. John was inwards putting his head in his hands, wondering how this could have possibly happened. Mira had obviously been wronged, but John had met enough security officers to be familiar with their egos. McCalister had just snubbed McGee, and John knew that he would end up taking the brunt of the older, more senior officer's anger.
"Who the hell does he think he is?" asked McGee, turning his glare upon the doctor.
"I'm terribly sorry for this whole incident," replied John, doing his best not to shrink back from the intimidating officer. "I don't think Mr. McCalister-"
"THIS IS MY BRIG!" shouted the security officer, casuing John to wince. "And I'll be damned if some junior walks in here and give his opinion to the entire world without consulting with me!"
Apparently, McGee was not as nice an officer as the base's CMO. John tried to salvage the situation. "I... I'll talk to him first thing after I leave. May Mir- Miss Green be excused?"
McGee took several calming breaths, then nodded. "Right, right." He nodded to one of his men and the force field was dropped. "Maybe I was a little too hasty. Next time," he said to Mira, "contact the base security when you're a visitor. And keep your officers in line," he practically spat at John before leaving.
"Nice to meet you, too," muttered John. Mira walked out of the brig, and John immediately remembered her light wound. "I'll take care of the bruise," he promised after hugging her.

"Someone's not happy with being stuck on a starbase," Mira added as she winced when John hugged her. "Careful, that hurts," she sputtered. "So...what happens now? Am I released? Am I just being transferred from one private little cell to another?"
She glanced over at John and smiled. The look on his face was answer enough. "Thank you," she stated, leaning into him to reduce the weight on her own body. "Darn this really is starting to hurt now...he must've punched harder than I thought..." They slowly walked out of the secured area, John firmly supporting the younger woman as they moved.
Earlier, Mira had been lying down in the cell to reduce the pain, but when both McCallister and John had come to visit, she'd started pacing. But now, she was standing upright, straining muscles that were bruised badly. "John?" she started, suddenly looking a little pale.
At that moment, a red-haired young man walked up to hem. At first he wore a huge grin on his face, but that was just as quickly replaced by a worried frown. "Mira? You ok sis?" He glanced from his twin to the young man holding her up. He could see from the body language that this man obviously cared a great deal for his sister. "Is she all right?"
Francis walked up to his sister's other side. "Mira?"
Mira looked up, smiling feebly at her brother. "Yeh, I'm fine. Just got myself involved in a barfight and got arrested while I actually broke up said fight. And got the wind knocked out of me." She laughed grimly then winced. "John, I don't think it's just a bruise, I-" She sagged against the young doctor.
"Mira!" Francis cried out in alarm as both men caught the young navigator. Alarmed, he gazed up at Mann. "Tell me the truth, what's going on with my sister? Why did she faint like that? Who did this to her...I want to press charges for assault. This is outrageous."

The control-freak McGee's over-inflated ego, the false arrest of Mira, and McCalister's disregard of McGee's attitude (although John could hardly blame the Excalibur's chief of security for trying to expedite things) was all manageable for John. But this new development was not. As the two men lay Mira down gently to the floor, John reached for his medical tricorder. It was missing. He must have left it in Sickbay.
"Get the base CMO," snapped John, probing the bruised area. It seemed all of Mira's bones were in place, but that didn't mean there wasn't any internal bleeding... or cracked ribs...
Francis - for it must have been him, John thought - was racing away toward the nearest directory. For all his training, there was little John could do. He had no equipment with him. Desperately, he tried to find some other injury than might have been the cause of Mira's collapse, but there was none. A nurse arrived, who John was relieved to see. "Hand me your tricorder," he snapped.
The nurse begin to protest, so John simply grabbed it. A fairly quick scan revealed she was suffering minor internal bleeding. She was fine for the moment, but in a few hours she would be dead if not treated. Two other nurses and a stretcher arrived moments later, Francis leading the way. The nurses loaded Mira onto the stretcher and hurried to Sickbay, John and Francis right behind them.
"You're a doctor, then?" asked Francis.
John nodded. "Or at least I was. I've been promoted to Excalibur's XO."
"Ah," said Francis. "So you can help find out who did this?"
"Trust me," said John, his face as dark as Francis' was, "I want whoever did this as much as you do. Trouble is, there isn't any way to find whoever it is that hit her. No conventional way, at least."
****************************************************
While Mira lay unconcious, Francis watching intently as the Sickbay staff tended to her wounds, John spoke quietly with a security guard from the Excalibur. Meldova nodded quietly before slipping away.

Francis sat beside his sister's bed, quietly stroking the back of her hand, encouraging her to get well. From the corner of his eyes, he saw Mann talk to an officer dressed in red, so he assumed it would be a security officer. "Sureley there were witnesses to the incident?" he encouraged, "didn't internal sensors record anything?"
The cadet cast hopeful eyes on the lieutenant doctor, while he continued to stroke Mira's hand. Inside, he was seething. On the one side because someone had injured his little sister (though she was only minutes younger than him) and on the other hand because she was so stupid to get caught up in a bar fight. "She'll be all right, won't she?" he asked, as he got up from his seat, waving Mann over to take his place. "Someone needs to watch her. I'm going to talk to your captain about this...besides I had wanted to meet your captain anyway. Mira promised to introduce me, before she got called away."
He stepped away from the bed. "I hope she'll be all right, both physically and mentally. I know she suffers from the loss of your previous captain and she needs all the support she can get. You be good to her, you hear me? Or you'll have to deal with me."
Francis walked out of the medical bay and went in search for Captain Santos, at last finding him on the bridge of his ship. "Excuse me, Captain Santos?" Francis walked up to the young captain. "I am Francis Green, Mira's brother. Could I have a word with you? It concerns the incident on the starbase this afternoon. I wish to press charges against the person who beat up my sister. She's currently unconscious in sickbay, suffering internal bleedings. How would I go about finding the person who did this to her?"
Meanwhile in sickbay, Mira at last stirred and groaned, then lay still again. Slowly, she opened her eyes, her face a mask of confusion. "Where am I?" she managed, before slipping back into the mercy of unconsciousness.
