"True, to be a warrior one must start at one place with a tutor that gives them wisdom to grow upon and then that person can truely be called the warrior. As for the Federation, The Federation will grow and prosper with growing alliances among other races, its just a matter of time wither the races choose to come into the family." Duke called back.
He nodded slowly, "This is true. I never said that violence is the only answer to anything. There is a difference between committing acts of war and living one's life as a warrior. I am a peaceful being and would never wish to end a life, as I hope you know. These are the principles that Starfleet are based on, are they not? I would not break them and I promise that to you. I, however, stand on the honor of my family name."
"And you will be addressed as Ensign Zarath, in a far more proper tone, and if there were any slight misunderstandings I am sorry for the lack of judgment on my part and will see to it that all things are put to the necessary adequacy of the crew." Duke mentioned to zarath.
"If there were anything more addressing that may come up later, please feel free to come to either me, or one of the crew and we will try our best to sift threw the situation as best we can" as duke continued to work on the consoles
The Andorian raised his eyebrows slowly, looking to be quite impressed with the response that was given to him by this. It was obvious that he had expected a far more terse and unhappy reaction to his words.
It almost seemed as though he was happy with the return.
"I am..most gracious. I believe then that it should be understood that my words were simply in response to such things and I assure you that I meant no disrespect. I believe that as a crew we must be able to hold ourselves properly."
He nodded slightly, returning to one of the consoles and reinserting the tape. After peering down into the recesses of the plate viewer, he looked back up with a nod. "This too experiences those patterns." He pressed a few of the controls, moving on likewise to the environmental control station.
It was here that he again repeated the process, now able to repair the console again through whole usage of software, "Sir? Do you believe this to be an isolated case of unmaintained requirements or do you believe there is some foul play?"
He raised an eyebrow in a rather worried fashion - strange for an Anodorian considering how they viewed themselves. Such a proud race would seldom admit to fear.

"I seriously doubt that Ensign," Ephrem said moving uncomfortably in his chair," we're in the middle of the Federation. The nearest Klingon or Romulan post is at least twenty five lightyears away. John what do you think?"
(John)
"Ensign, I don't want this to be priority, but I would like for you and the Chief to look into the navigational sensors and see if anything interesting has happened," Ephrem said as he walked near his science officer.
"Chief, I suppose that those little malfunctions have been taken care of?" Ephrem asked.
(Mira)
"Good, please set a course and engage," Ephrem said looking at his young Chief.
"Lieutenant, I would like for you to set up a small drill for just the senior staff," Ephrem said," I want everyone to participate since we won't be arriving at our next destination for sixteen hours."
(Duke)
"One more thing, I want this drill to be full contact," Ephrem said which surprised many," I think we need to enhance our hand to hand combat abilities. I for one don't want my butt handed to me anymore."

"Given the nature of our recent encounters with other... people... odds are we wouldn't meet them again so soon." John shrugged. "Based on the number of times the human body becomes ill, I'm surprised we haven't had the occasional system malfunction. Then again, I'm hardly the computer type."
"Ensign, I don't want this to be priority, but I would like for you and the Chief to look into the navigational sensors and see if anything interesting has happened," Ephrem said as he walked near his science officer.

John frowned, keeping his mouth shut. It wasn't hard to imagine where he and Ephrem would end up in an physical confrontation: dead last. McCalister was bigger than John was, Zarath looked about as friendly as a Klingon, and Mira had already proven her ability to toss John around on a training mat. The doctor had relatively little combat experience, and the only thing he had learned in his few sessions with Mira (as far as personal defense was concerned) was how to get out of the way. The first officer exited the Bridge while the others went to work. John had to at least avoid making a fool of himself, and only one person outside the senior staff could help him.

Out of Character:
This is a joint post between Mira and Zarath
Red = Mira
Yellow = Zarath
In character:
Zarath had changed into his 'recreation' uniform and stood at attention on the gym. Despite the Doctor's thoughts, he would surely protect him in this exercise, should the Doctor be engaged as was the typical Andorian fashion. Regardless, it was beside the point as he stood there, awaiting what may come.
Mira had changed into her usual training outfit and stood flexing and stretching her muscles, occasionally joggin in place by way of warming up. She wasn't about to engage anyone if she wasn't properly warmed up. Others were arriving now too and she smiled brightly at each of them, reserving her special smile for Mann. She wouldn't engage him this time, as she preferred not to embarass him.
The Andorian stood, slowly smiling to Mira. He nodded to her, "It is not my usual way, however, I must admit I have great respect for one such as yourself."
Is that so?" Mira replied, while continuing her warming up. She didn't look up at the Andorian as she was focusing on stretching her hamstrings and thus stood bent forwards with her hands flat on the floor.
He nodded gently, "This is true. You are young, yet nominally in practice you outrank me. You are obviously one who bears much skill. Furthermore, I respect anyone who serves beside me in Starfleet."
Respect isn't given just like that ensign," Mira replied, smoothly straightening up again. "It is earned. And age has nothing to do with skill." She saw his antennae twitch as she spoke. "I a brother at the academy, but he's not nearly as good a pilot as I am. Oh and he's my twin brother..."
He raised an eyebrow, "Not just given? I do not hand out respect. We Andorians bleed honor and can sense it thus wise. If I mention that I have respect for you, I speak in earnest." He nodded, "Does he run the airtrams?"
Airtrams? Oh no, he's still learning to be a pilot." Mira grinned up at the taller officer. "So are you just talk or do you do action too? I haven't come here to just chat you know." She lashed out with her right foot and flattened the surprised Andorian.
He looked up to her, now no longer using words. He moved over to her quickly, placing his hand around her throat so that he might sprawl her down to the mat. With thus he glared down upon her.
She fell as he charged at her, his fingers around her throat, and sprawled backwards. "That's more like it," she chuckled, as she broke his grip, rolled over and sat on him, locking his legs under hers, putting her weight on her arms, thus holding his arms down at his wrists. "Can you do more?"
In the style of a classical wrestler, he leaned her over so that he could have her in a ball shape. Her legs were pinned over the top of her head, "I can, though I do not wish to harm a human."
"Hah!" she scoffed, "you won't hurt me." She struggled in his grip and wiggled herself free, swatting him on the shoulder. Then she took him in a headlock, forcing him down on his knees. "Just because I'm a girl, doesn't mean you have to go easy on me you know. I'm offended if you thought that."
He jumped out of her grip, putting her in an equal Nelson as he manuvered his body across her back, "It was because you are a human, not a girl, that I am concerned. I do not mean this to sound in a racist fashion."
Mira lay flat on her back, the Andorian hovering over her as he held her down. "You're no fun," she challenged, "why don't we try something different. How familiar are you with karate? Or is there any Andorian fighting style you could teach me?"
Mira hated losing and this Andorian was strong, even though he had the advantage of height. That, and this was someone of a different species who could possibly teach her something new.
He smiled as he stood before her, brushing off his training uniform. "Well, if you would allow me, there is one I believe would be applied well to humans. Are you fearful of me attempting something straight on you?"
Do I strike you as a fearful person?" Mira retorted, her stance challenging. "Show me."
He looked to her, his antennae twitching as would be so typical. He attempted to control this, as he knew that she would not be able to receive the extra-perception that he received from them. He leaned out an arm, placing it under her's, and moved slowly so she might take note. Quickly flipping her over by way of her armpit, he leaned back on her.
That's almost like a Judo move," Mira commented, climbing back to her feet, accepting his assistance. "Show me again, and explain how you did that so quickly."
He shook his head, "Judo involves certain positions. This involves equilibrium. Stand with your arms at your hips."
Mira did, placing her hands on her hips as she was told to do. She glanced up at the Andorian, expectantly.
"Notice you are at a good balance, correct?"
Mira nodded.
Thalin rose an eyebrow, jutting out his arm, "This throws you off equilibrium - your eyes and senses are drawn to the exaggerated movement. I do whatever I care to as you are distracted."
But that's just it," Mira commented, not at all put off by his move. She kept the focus on his eyes. "I wasn't expecting you to do that, yet you still pulled it off."
Zarath smirked, "That's the point of it all."
Is it?" Mira couldn't believe it. "So why isn't it working now then?" She watched his body language, the movement of his antenna, then sidestepped as he wanted to make his move. He was unbalanced now and she gave him a firm shove, sending him sprawling.
"You are a fast learning student," said the blue skinned science officer with a smile.
I have been doing this since I could walk," Mira smirked as she held out her hand to him. "Any more moves you'd like to show me?"
"Perhaps we should wait for the others."

Alyana had been assigned to the Excalibur, she knew that but her exact status was still in question. She had the credits and necessary training to be assigned as an Acting Ensign but the Trill Symbiosis Commission wasn't exactly enamoured of the idea. Maybe they would come round or maybe they wouldn't. Aly had been told very firmly to say out of the debate if she wished to remain assigned to a Starfleet vessel. As it was she had been told to report for duty and let things be sorted out over time.
She wasn't sure exactly what starfleet had been told about the Trill government's opposition to AE status and she didn't like starting off on her new ship with a lie, well several and most of them were things that no one else needed to know anyway. Since above everything she wanted to serve on a Starfleet ship she knew she had to keep her mouth shut.
"Miss Ryat?" The shuttle pilot's voice interrupted her thoughts. "We're ready to dock with the Excalibur." Aly nodded and went to gather her things while he dealt with the docking procedure.
She left the shuttle clutching a bag and her transfer orders she looked around the shuttle bay briefly in mild shock. This was a big ship. She knew she had to go and report in. Her first guess for the location of Captain Santos was the bridge and she was lucky.
"Alyana Ryat, reporting in for duty as Chief of Communications, sir."

Ephrem like the rest of the senior staff was headed towards the recreational facilities aboard Excalibur, but he would need to tend to something a little more important. He had just been informed that the Excalibur had just been assigned a new communications officer. Her name was Alyana Ryat from Trill.
~Why did I have to change so quickly~ Ephrem thought as he walked onto the bridge in his workout clothes.
"Captain I assume we can report to the bridge dressed like you in the future?" Barbara asked with a smile.
"I'd like to see you try," Ephrem said as he took his seat," I've been informed that we will be receiving a new crew mate very shortly."
"Speaking of which, a shuttle has just asked permission to dock," Barbara asked as she gave the shuttle clearance. Ephrem was a bit perplexed when he read the Symbiosis recommendation to assign her as a civilian. He didn't understand it, but he would make a final decision shortly.
"Alyana Ryat, reporting in for duty as Chief of Communications, sir."
"Welcome aboard the Excalibur, please follow me," Ephrem said as he led Alyana Ryat to his office. "Would you like anything to drink?"
(Ryat)
"I would like to apologize for my appearance," Ephrem said," the entire is going to begin some training exercises very soon. I presume that you know about the Symbiosis recommendation about your position on my ship?"
(Ryat)
"Since the Symbiosis has no authority on my ship and you clearly have the skills to serve on a Starfleet vessel, I'm granting you a field promotion of acting ensign. Congratulations"
(Ryat)
"Ensign, if you wish you can join the rest of the senior staff in the drill or you can get yourself acclimated," Ephrem asked as he handed her a padd," I have already assigned you quarters and your uniform is waiting for you."

"Welcome aboard the Excalibur, please follow me," Ephrem said as he led Alyana Ryat to his office. "Would you like anything to drink?"
"Thank-you for the welcome, and no thank-you on the drink" Aly replied with a slight smile
"I would like to apologize for my appearance," Ephrem said," the entire is going to begin some training exercises very soon. I presume that you know about the Symbiosis recommendation about your position on my ship?"
Aly wondered silently exactly what the symbiosis commission had told him and more to the point exactly what he thought they did. Certainly he wouldn't know the truth. The number of non-Trill who had been told was tiny. "I know my government was somewhat resistant to me becoming an officer. I gather they thought I would be better suited to diplomatic duties back home."
"Since the Symbiosis has no authority on my ship and you clearly have the skills to serve on a Starfleet vessel, I'm granting you a field promotion of acting ensign. Congratulations"
"Thank-you, sir" What more was there she could say. This was what she had wanted although she knew there could be consequences back home for her.
"Ensign, if you wish you can join the rest of the senior staff in the drill or you can get yourself acclimated," Ephrem asked as he handed her a padd," I have already assigned you quarters and your uniform is waiting for you."
"I would like to meet the rest of the senior staff, sir. I will join you as soon as I have changed. Thank-you again"
As soon as the Captain had dismissed her Aly made her way to her new quarters. She took a moment to look around her quarters and then quickly stripped off her travel gear and changed into some practical training kit.
She took a moment to admire the red uniform that lay ready for her before braiding her hair back and heading for the recreation/training areas.
There were several people present when Aly arrived including an Andorian. She noted that at least one pair of eyes had been drawn to the line of spots along the edge of her face. She wasn't surprised Trill weren't exactly common in starfleet.
"Hello everyone, I'm Alyana Ryat. The new Chief Communications Officer. Pleased to meet you"

And then just for good measure and as a good chance to practice she repeated her greeting in Andorian.
Tag: Lt Zarath.

And then just for good measure and as a good chance to practice she repeated her greeting in Andorian.
The scientist was visibly impressed. He smiled slowly in a rather enigmatic way, bowing to her without his usual subterfuge. He seemed to rather be trusting of the other.
To this he offered his hand slowly, in a rather nervous sort of fashion that was not usual towards him. It seemed however that he was quite impressed with their new communications officer.
With a tilt of the head, and a twitch of the antenna he examined her before rushing out an apology, continued with words stating that he had never before met a Trill.
Further now with raised eyes he looked to her as he began to introduce himself, "I am Lieutenant Thalin Zarath, Science Officer of this vessel. i assure you kindly that it is my pleasure to meet you, Miss Ryat."
Another bemusement befell him as he thought, "Before I was demonstrating an Andorian technique of close quarters combat that involves confusing the enemy and thus removing their ability to ascertain equilibrium. Perhaps you would so be interested in the abilities incurred from this exercise?"
"The ability works very well against races of strong stature. In the manner of certain method's of Earth's fighting it is very similar to Judo, though it is a bit more cerebral. One far smaller than you or I could take down a full grown Klingon warrior with it."
He looked her over gently, thinking twice about applying the technique without any permission.

"Please call me Aly" she said

"That does sound useful" Aly said "I've not really learned any self-defense, how do I start?"

~How did she beat me?~ Ephrem thought as he walked inside the training facilities. The newest member of senior staff somehow had beaten him in arriving even though she had far many more things to do before arriving. He was pleased to see his Andorian science officer speaking to the new arrival. He was even more surprised to learn that Alyana spoke fluent Andorian. The ability to speak and learn alien languages was a defenant plus when it came to performing the duties of a communications officer.
"That does sound useful" Aly said "I've not really learned any self-defense, how do I start?"
"Ensign, some forms of martial arts take years to master," Ephrem said jumping in the conversation," I don't know this Andorian form, but I'm sure Lt. Zarath would be more than happy to train you."
(Zarath, Aly)
"Mira, would you like to spar against me?" Ephrem said knowing full well of her abilities. Luckily for him, Ephrem was trained as well. He wondered if John would object to this form of training, but Ephrem wanted everyone ready to defend themselves if the need ever arised. "Whoever wins, goes against Thalin."

He raised an eye softly, "It is truely quite simple. Stand with your hands at your hips." As was done before he placed his arm under her's slowly, so as to draw attention away from him. As he did so, he leaned forwards, placing her onto her face. However, fearful of what he knew of Trill physiology, he was a bit more careful with her than with Mira.
He shook his head, his antennae twitching with the motion, "I cannot have this. If there is one thing I shall not understand regarding humans it is their unnecessary lust for competition. There surely must be other outlets for your pent up aggressions."
He looked down to the communications officer as he helped her up, "It involves utilizing the enemy's inability to stay focused. They fear you will do something with one arm so greatly that they cease to pay attention to what the other arm is doing."
With an exhale he looked up, shutting and reopening his eyes in a fluid, nearly insectoid motion. With his hands behind his back, he took a glance around, "A far better proposition would be for us to let loose upon on another. Is this not a more accurate test of our skills?" He smirked a bit, though it honestly was not meant to be arrogant. "Though I really am flattered that I would be thought of as to have a match with the winner...unless.."
He failed then to finish his thought completely.

"Ensign, some forms of martial arts take years to master," Ephrem said jumping in the conversation," I don't know this Andorian form, but I'm sure Lt. Zarath would be more than happy to train you."
Aly looked from the newly arrived Captain back to Thalin, it seemed that most of the senior staff were self-defence trained to some degree or other.
"It is truly quite simple. Stand with your hands at your hips." Aly did as instructed and he threw her very gently forward. She lay on the mat for a moment as she tried to work out how she had come to be there.
"Mira, would you like to spar against me?" The Captain asked "Whoever wins, goes against Thalin." Aly heard, that was two competitions she was determined to stay out of.
Thalin shook his head "If there is one thing I shall not understand regarding humans it is their unnecessary lust for competition. There surely must be other outlets for your pent up aggressions." He looked down at Aly and helped her to her feet. "It involves utilizing the enemy's inability to stay focused. They fear you will do something with one arm so greatly that they cease to pay attention to what the other arm is doing."
Aly thought about that as the science officer spoke again to the Captain.
"A far better proposition would be for us to let loose upon on another. Is this not a more accurate test of our skills? Though I really am flattered that I would be thought of as to have a match with the winner...unless.." The words trailed off and Aly considered where this was going. She turned to address Thalin.
"Could you show me that move again please?" She resumed the stance he had shown her. (Thalin)

"Could you show me that move again please?" She resumed the stance he had shown her.
He nodded slowly, "I would only be so happy to do so."
He leaned towards her, standing himself on a wide and sturdy base with his legs spread. With a slow, exaggerated, motion that was intended to illustrate the move, he placed his arm underneath one of her own. With her eyes being drawn to this aformentioned arm he was easily able to lean down upon her so that his weight combined with the teetering momentum was able to force her down to the mat.
With this action completed he looked to her slowly with a nod as a hand was reached down to help her up; his antennae were twitching. "Perhaps it best now if you were to attempt it upon me; would you disagree or not?"

"I suppose you are right Mr. Zarath, I suppose my human competitiveness will get the better of me most of the time," Ephrem said as he gave Mira a wicked smile. He had hoped to spar with her, but he knew that she would give him a run for his money.
Ephrem silently watched as the Andorian and Trill began to train once again. He was pleased to see that everyone was taking this seriously especially his two newest arrivals. He knew that Zarath was trained as was he and Mira, but he was a bit worried about John and Alyana.
"Mira would you mind teaching me what he has thought you?" Ephrem said as he approached her one more time.
"Yeah of course," Mira said as he got herself into the correct posture," stand like this. You should feel a lot more centered than other stances."
"Yeah your right.......

Without a mat, John had acquired several bruises as Meldova threw him to the ground over and over again. "You can't expect to simply defend yourself without training and exercise, John," cautioned Meldova as the doctor wiped a trickle of blood from his mouth.
"I just don't want to look too incompetant," muttered John, dropping into the crouch Meldova had taught him. His left foot and fist were closest to Meldova, while he had turned his body to give his opponent less area to hit.
Meldova sighed before lunging at the smaller man. John rolled backward and sprung to his feet. The security guard's leg flew dangerously close to John's head, but the officer caught the leg as it passed and twisted it. Meldova seemed to fly off the ground, kicking John in the chest with his free leg. John was propelled backward and hit the wall. He somehow managed to remain on his feet. Meldova has landed and was coming toward John once more. John deflected the first two punches, but Meldova caught John on the arm and flipped him over. John landed on his back and groaned as fresh pain shot up through his spine.
"At least you're doing better," said Meldova, slightly amused. "If I were you, though, I'd get down to Sickbay before you try sparring with anyone else."
John nodded as he got to his feet. "Yeah," he coughed. "I think so. Thanks."
Meldova waved him away. "Think nothing of it. I'll help you any time, but we should practice in the gym from now on."
After a brief and annoying stop at Dr. Ryan's Sickbay (and a few medications to help dull the pain - both that he had suffered and that he was going to suffer) John arrived to see everyone but McCalister already busy.

Aly picked herself up off the floor for approximately the umteenth time. She felt she was starting to get some of what Thalin was attempting (very patiently it had to be said) to explain to her. She stretched, noting that she had been in a far worse condition after playing raquetball, and noticed that someone new had arrived. She waved a hand.
"Hi, I'm Alyana Ryat the new chief comms officer. Feel free to call me Aly." She grinned "Do you know much about self-defence?"

In one swift motion, Mira floored her captain. "This is too easy," she grinned, "and you're out of shape captain, sir!" She held out her hand and helped him back to his feet. From the corner of her eyes she saw the Andorian teach his trick to the spotted girl, but when he moved on, she was left alone until John entered and the girl walked up to him.
Ignoring it, Mira returned her attention to Ephrem. She wasn't going to spar with John, she'd save him at least that humiliation. Unless he'd insist of course, in which case she'd help him as much as possible. Again, she floored Ephrem. "Come on captain, is that all you can give me?" she complained loudly, watching McCallister snigger from the sideline. "You're not listening..."
That's where Mira fell flat on her back, gasping for breath as air was knocked from her lungs on impact. She grinned as Ephrem helped her back to her feet. "Very clever," she praised, "now.." She grabbed the front of his tunic with one hand, the waistband of his slacks with the other and in one fluid motion swung him over her shoulder. As he fell, she rolled with him and took him in a headlock. "Try and get out of that one," she urged, "and if you can, I'll teach you how to do it."

Zarath shook his head in the sort of manner that a classical eraed wise man would. "Madam, your skill is clearly becoming more impressive as well as to a greater bit, however, on Andor we never tolerate the insult of an opponent. It shall always be your downfall. Arrogance is a great detriment to your cause."

He frowned deeply, "Remember the story of Icarus well - unchecked ambition can lead to a swift downfall from great heights." With an exhalation he looked around slowly, soon taking a seat before moving up behind the somewhat fazed Mira. As he again took an arm around her, his this time placed it around her stomach, tossing he to the ground as he stood behind her in a continual manner. "This is your second lesson, and one I believe the teachers at Starfleet Academy preach - expect the unexpected." He smiled, "I have great faith in you."

"Hi, I'm Alyana Ryat the new chief comms officer. Feel free to call me Aly." She grinned "Do you know much about self-defence?"
John shook his head. "No. I'm a doctor. At least, I used to be. Mira tried teaching me some of the basics a while ago, but..." he trailed off. "We got distracted. I'm John Mann, first officer."
Ephrem, freed from his bout with Mira due to the Andorian's intervention, approached the two officers as they shook hands. "Are you ready, John?" he asked.
The younger man smiled slightly. "Certainly, Ephrem. If you'll excuse us, Miss Ryat." John followed his friend to the mat.

ooc: meh I hate opera for not opening a crew manifest in a new tab...I lost my post because of it Mira yelped in surprise as a new set of arms snaked around her waist and bodily tossed her aside. She recovered sufficiently to roll with the toss, but not enough to prevent herself from bumping into the wall harder than expected. Jumping to her feet, she glared at the science officer. "That's not fair, sneaking up from behind like that," she scowled. She then saw Mann walk off with the captain and silently wished her boyfriend good luck on wrestling with the captain. Her distraction was again taken advantage of by the Andorian, who tried yet another of his many techniques on her. She countered, however, with a Klingon move Captain James had taught her. She positioned herself on his abdomen even as Zarath fell, trapping his left arm under his own body while bracing his right across his own throat. "Now what," she chuckled, "and trying to encourage your opponent is hardly insulting. The captain does need the practice as obviously do we all." She beckoned McCallister over. "Yo McCallister, why don't you battle our blue friend here for a while? Then us girls," she nodded over to Ryat, "can have a little bout together. The girl looks like she might faint, and I don't want any of you guys embarassing her!" She released Zarath and rolled to her feet. "What do you say, Miss Ryat?" Mira walked up to the Trill and extended her hand. "I don't think we've met yet. I'm Mira Green, ships navigator and tactical uh..officer."

The Captain was sparring with his first officer and Thalin was being tossed around by the young coppery haired woman whose name Aly had yet to catch. Aly found herself back against one of the room's walls watching the others warily and trying to stay out of the way of flying hands, feet and bodies.
As Aly watched the young woman pinned Thalin to the mats in a position that looked very uncomfortable and didn't seem to leave him much room to struggle.
"Now what," she chuckled, "and trying to encourage your opponent is hardly insulting. The captain does need the practice as obviously do we all." That was a sentiment Aly agreed with although she had been amazed to watch the young woman spar.
She beckoned to someone else who had been standing by the walls and had escaped Aly's notice. "Yo McCallister, why don't you battle our blue friend here for a while? Then us girls," she nodded over to Ryat, "can have a little bout together. The girl looks like she might faint, and I don't want any of you guys embarrassing her!" She released Zarath and rolled to her feet. "What do you say, Miss Ryat?"
Aly gave a non committal sort of shrug, she knew this was going to be hard work "Umm.. okay". The woman walked towards her and extended a hand. "I don't think we've met yet. I'm Mira Green, ships navigator and tactical uh..officer."
Aly took the offered hand as she replied. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Alyana Ryat. New comms officer. Feel free to call me Aly."
She allowed herself to be led back towards the center of the mats Mira might be a similar build to Aly and only a little taller but she knew how to handle herself. Aly resigned herself to another lesson with a lot of getting up of the floor.
Still it was an interesting experience and Aly was learning a lot. If only about how many different parts of her anatomy she could land on and then still get up again.
She thought she had surprised Mira once by quite spontaneously coming out with a sacrifice throw that Zedan had been taught on Vulcan. Aly had certainly surprised herself with the move although it hadn't worked quite correctly and while Mira had gone down she had actually landed on Aly. Aly just hoped Mira wouldn't ask any awkward questions. She didn't want to have to lie.
A while later Aly gasped and paused for a moment trying to catch her breath. "So... aside from bouncing people round the mats, do you have any other hobbies?"

In the past Ephrem would have easily taken down Mira and subdued the fiery navigations chief, but as she had stated his physical shape was no better than an old man. Ephrem was no more than ten years her senior and yet she was easily able to bring him to the floor multiple times. The fact that both were trained in martial arts gave the advantage to Mira. If it hadn't been for her being distracted, he would have never gotten that punch in. His embarrassing performance against Mira meant that Ephrem would once again begin his Academy day regiment of exercise and healthy eating. With that in mind, Ephrem approached John who had just arrived from sickbay.
"Are you ready, John?" Ephrem asked approaching his first officer
"Certainly, Ephrem. If you'll excuse us, Miss Ryat." John said.
"I saw what Meldova was doing to you," Ephrem said as he got into his first stance," I'm not looking for blood, but I don't plan on going easy on you either."
With that being said Ephrem started with a flurry of punches to the abdomen, chest, and arms. Seeing that this took John off guard he quickly slammed him to the ground and held him in a full body lock. After a few seconds of this torture, Ephrem let go of John and helped his friend up.
"John, are you alright?" Ephrem asked before he felt himself being push back by a strong kick to the gut. "I take that as a yes."

Meldova must have noticed Ephrem was watching. Why didn't he say anything? wondered John, frustrated. Ephrem seemed oblivious to the connection John's foot had made with his stomach. The older man started at John again, but his earlier, more serious rounds had slowed him somewhat. John was able to deflect multiple kicks and punches before Ephrem kicked the first officer's legs out. John landed on his back. He paused for a breath before rolling out of the way, narrowly escaping a follow-up lunge by Ephrem. He shouldn't have paused...
The Captain didn't wait for the doctor to get to his feet, and John nearly lost his footing as he side-stepped a lunge. Instead of pressing his luck and attempting to catch Ephrem as he traveled past, John backed away, dropping once more into the crouch Meldova had taught him. He breathed heavily, sweat lining his brow as the two men faced each other. Ephrem moved first, feinting. John jumped away, keeping his front toward where Ephrem should have been. But the Captain had not moved as far as John had anticipated, and wasted no time in commencing a true grasp for John's arm. John slapped away the outstretched arm, kicking Ephrem in the gut a second time. A slight gasp escaped Ephrem's lips before John's legs were swept out from him a second time. He managed to jump slightly, but not entirely, and his jaw connected firmly with the mat. John coughed, tasting blood. He must have inadvertently bit his tongue.
Ephrem had also ended up on the ground, but was back up. John struggled to his feet, only to be sent to the ground once more by a well-placed kick to the chest. John reached out, grabbing the foot as he fell and taking Ephrem with him. His own landing was cushioned while Ephrem hit harder than he had expected. John hit the mat with his palm twice as Meldova had taught him, indicating a break was needed.
"You might not have been looking for it," said John after his heart rate began to return to normal. He wiped his hand on his chin as he continued, "...but you got some blood. Is your ankle hurt?" John guestured to the foot he had pulled Ephrem by.

OCC: Since things have gone a bit dead here I'm attempting to move things along a little.
After the training session Aly felt rather bruised but elated. She planned to have a swim with Mira when time permitted and was determined to learn more self defence. She returned to her quarters and indulged in a nice long shower. She ran a quick check on her isoboramine levels, a daily ritual that she would have to get used to, and was unsurprised to find them normal.
Aly returned her med scanner to it's case and tucked it out of sight under the bed before changing into her new uniform and returning to the bridge. Most of the rest of the senior staff were present suggesting to Aly that she had indulged a little too long in the shower.
She settled herself at the communications station and began checking the systems over. She didn't when the Excalibur's last CCO had left but the logs were a little fragmentary and vague to say the least. She muttered to herself in several different languages as she tried tried to work out what the old officer was saying. She had long concluded that Klingon was the most effective language for someone wishing to express their dissatisfaction with something as the sentiments tended to be clear even if the terminology was not. Still she sorted out the logs before having to resort to Klingon terminology.
She then checked over the communications array and the Universal translator databanks. The diagnostics on the latter turned up something strange. She quickly typed out a message and ran it through the translator.
She stared at the output for a long moment. Not only was the output incorrect. It was also gibberish.
Aly turned towards the Captain. "Sir, There seems to be a problem with the base translation matrix. My predecessor's logs weren't exactly detailed and I wondered if this was a recurrence of a old failure. I've never seen a matrix corrupted like this before."

"I understand, Sir. I should be able to fix it but in the mean time I'll have to translations manually."
Aly walked over to the Andorian at the science station. "Lieutenant, I have noticed that there is a corruption in the translation matrix. I am worried that it is a symptom of a larger database or computer problem. Would you mind checking?"

"No, just a small sprain," Ephrem replied with a beaming smile. He remembered the days when Mira would pound him into the ground like a baby does with their toy. He was being trained and Ephrem liked the determination he had seen in his first officer. He wouldn't let anyone push him around anytime soon. "If you want to keep sparing please do so, but I'm throwing in the towel. I think a good nice long shower will do me good."
Ephrem couldn't be sure, but he was positive that he had heard John snicker when he told him this. Ephrem just laughed and walked away. Every member of the crew would be doing this in the coming days, so the bruises would soon become the norm. As he walked towards his quarters, Ephrem thought of different ways to make the lives of his officer a bit harder. With Aly's arrival, Ephrem decided that he would tinker with the communications systems even more. He remembered the day he came aboard the Excalibur and worked at communications for the first time. It was a mad house. It had taken him countless hours to get everything fixed. He would make sure to see how Aly reated to this when she reported for her first shift in a few hours.
"Computer use Ephrem Trial One program on communications system, save current settings in the ships secondary files and deny all access except for mine," Ephrem said as he walked into his quarters and headed towards the shower. The little chime of the computer told him that his orders had been followed and he enjoyed his well deserved shower.
"Sir, There seems to be a problem with the base translation matrix. My predecessor's logs weren't exactly detailed and I wondered if this was a recurrence of a old failure. I've never seen a matrix corrupted like this before."
"Your predecessor just happens to be me Ensign," Ephrem said smiling at the young Trill," and please refrain from cursing. Like you I can speak many languages, Klingon just happens to be one of my favorites."
(Aly)
"Matrices are keen to become corrupted every so often, but I have to agree with your observation about this one. I think I've seen one this bad only once before, but I'm sure you will be able to fix it," Ephrem said from his chair.
"I understand, Sir. I should be able to fix it but in the mean time I'll have to translations manually."
"Yes, I had to do the same thing," Ephrem said," it took me thirty eight hours to fix though."
