Today was a very important day for the twenty seven year old former communications officer. At 0700 hours Ephrem Santos would begin his tenure as commanding officer of the USS Excalibur. He of course had dreamed of this day, but he never imagined it would come so soon. His heart of course was heavy with sorrow. It had only been a few weeks ago that a great man sat in the seat that he would occupy in a few hours.
Ephrem doubted that he would ever be half the man that Robert James was, but that wouldn't stop him from trying. As he picked up his new uniform, he couldn't help but worry. He wasn't sure that he was ready for the responsibility that he had been given. When he accepted the position he had reservations, but the excitement of it all drowned that away.
~Get a hold of yourself, you can do this~ Ephrem said to himself as he pressed his uniform. He had been unable to sleep for long that night, but he knew that he would have enough adrenaline to keep him going for a few days.
"Computer begin playing from Ephrem Tango program, song number five," Ephrem said as he read the itinerary for the day. Captain Voran and his crew were due to arrive at 0845 and Ephrem was planning on meeting them. He had already decided that he would be joined by John and Mira.
That of course brought up another problem. Ephrem had yet to find an executive officer. He had searched but was unable to find one. He was going to ask John to double up as acting first officer for this mission. It would be a temporary position until he found a suitable replacement.
The rest of the day would go by slowly, but Ephrem had make sure to fill it with some surprise inspections. He knew all the department heads so he didn't expect it to be so bad.
As he finished buttoning his yellow vest, he paid a homage to predecessor. It was an old ritual that he had learned many years ago. Hopefully they were all wrong and Captain James was alive somewhere, but if he wasn't hopefully he would help his former crew somehow.
"Well let's get this started," Ephrem said as he left his quarters and headed towards the bridge, his bridge.

Captain Voran, Commander Sentelek and Doctor Sloyan walked through the corridors of Starbase 301.
"I'm tellin' ya Russ, I ain't sleepin' on the floor d'you hear? I'm 66 years old and I don't need that at my age." Said Sloyan, but he was cut off by Voran.
"Don't worry, Lex, you can have the bed." Said Voran, rolling his eyes.
"I tell ya, it's a disgrace to make a man of my age share quarters." Said Sloyan.
"You're only 66!" Said Voran exasperatedly, "There was a time when that was considered old, but not anymore. Besides, there's going to be over 650 people on the ship, which normally only has a compliment of about 400. Everyone has to share quarters, and it's only for a short while."
The doctor grunted, but Voran knew that his friend was only being adversarial for the fun of it.
"Who are you with, Sentelek?" Asked Sloyan.
"I do not know, I have not had time to review the cabin assignments, however, I slept several days ago and do not anticipate needing to do so again for several days."
"I wish I was a Vulcan." He said with a chuckle.
"Intriguing." Remarked Sentelek.
Voran laughed as they reached the airlock. They crossed the small tunnel until the emerged face-to-face with Commander Santos and two others.

When he arrived at the brige he was met with a plesant surprise. The entire bridge crew had already arrived accompanied by John. When they saw him enter someone, he didn't know who, called the room to order. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked at them all. He was so honored to be leading them and he knew that they would do anything for them as he would for each of them.
"As you were," Ephrem said as he walked towards the captain's chair. He had sat in that same chair many times before, but this was very different. He took a moment and then sat down.
"I think he likes it," Barbara said from her station.
"Yes, so what?" Ephrem said smiling. His last statement was followed by a wierd minute of silence. Everyone was there doing there work, but it was just quiet.
"John, Mira, Barabara could you please join me in the conference room," Ephrem said as he stood and walked into the room. He let the three of them get situated before he began to talk.
"As you must now know, we are to escort Captain Voran to his ship the Constituiton," Ephrem said," I don't expect this mission to be anything out of the ordinary and should let us get back into the groove of things again."
"That being said, and knowing our history there needs to be a chain of command if I go down," Ephrem said," I respect Captain Voran, but I want this ship to be commanded by her own crew. I have contacted some officers around the fleet, but no one has become available. So John I'm asking you to pull double duty and become my temporary XO. If everything goes as planned and you want it, we could see about making you permanet XO."
<Tag John and Mira>
"Captain, Captain Voran and his crew have started boarding the ship," Ensign Mitchell said.
"Thank you Ensign," Ephrem said as he stood up," John, Mira will you please join me. Barbara you have the bridge."
The three officers made there way to the airlock and waited for the Captain to arrive. Ephrem was more than a bit nervous. Captain Voran was a legend and very few people had the experience he did.
"Captain Voran, Commanders welcome to the Excalibur," Ephrem said," let me introduce to you my Executive officer and doctor, Doctor John Mann and my Chief Tactical Officer, Chief Petty Officer Mira Green."
<Tag Voran, Mira, and John>
"Gentlemen if you will follow me, I would like for everyone to be debriefed before we head out," Ephrem said realizing that it would be a quick one at that. "Captain, if you or your crew require anything please do not hesitate. You are at home while you're with us."

Mira cheered happily upon hearing that her boyfriend had been selected as acting first officer, if anyone had deserved it, it was him. Otherwise, she quietly listened to Captain Santos briefing them on their upcoming mission. It was sad really, that Starfleet had no-one available to come strengthen their severely depleted command staff.
She and John followed Santos to the airlock, feeling somewhat nervous. Captain Voran was a legend among the legends and Mira for one was eager to finally meet him. She'd seen him talk to Santos back on starbase, when she'd been walking the skybridge, but hadn't met him in person.
"Gentlemen if you will follow me, I would like for everyone to be debriefed before we head out," Ephrem said realizing that it would be a quick one at that. "Captain, if you or your crew require anything please do not hesitate. You are at home while you're with us."
"Hey!" Mira protested, sharing a grin with Barbara, "me and her are hardly men you know!" She pointed between herself and Barbara, then pointed at Voran, Santos and Mann in turn. "You guys may be gentlemen...but surely we're ladies?"

John blinked in surprise. "Um... its a bit of a jump, but I think I can handle it." Mira grinned, clearly pleased at the informal promotion, and Ephrem was also smiling. "Do you want me on the Bridge or in Sickbay?" asked John.
"Hmm," mused Ephrem. "I hadn't thought about that. With all of our visitors, it might be less crowded on the Bridge if you stay in Sickbay... but no, you need to be on the Bridge to get a feel for your position. Wundt can handle Sickbay." John nodded.
John had no idea who Captain Voran was, but some of the other officers on the Bridge had been quietly and excitedly talking about the man. It seemed he was very well-known.
"Captain Voran, Commanders welcome to the Excalibur," Ephrem said," let me introduce to you my Executive officer and doctor, Doctor John Mann and my Chief Tactical Officer, Chief Petty Officer Mira Green." "And I'm very glad you are," said John, earning chuckles from several officers.

"My crew and I thank you for your hospitality, Captain, it's much appreciated. In turn, if there's anything we can do for you to earn our keep, as it were, we'd be happy to."
"That is much apreciated Captain," Ephrem said," but frankly I would prefer for my crew to do all the work. I would feel much better if your crew is relaxing and enjoying themselves."
This statement couldn't be any more true. Ephrem hoped that this would be the easiest mission ever. They were supposed to take the Constitution crew to there ship and then head back to the starbase. It was boring and he wanted it like that.
"I think its time for us to begin the mission briefing," Ephrem said allowing the Captain and his officers to pass. Before he followed them he gave Mira a fake mad look which caused her and Barbara to chuckle.
"John, I hope you take my side against them," Ephrem said before moving along. When everyone was in the lift, a tight fit at that, Ephrem ordered the lift to the bridge. The only noise in the lift was the light hum that the machine gave off. Ephrem was nervous being around a legend like Captain Voran. He could easily remember the lessons taught at the Academy concerning the missions done by Voran and his crew. If he was kid, Ephrem was positive that he would of asked the Captain for his autograph. The jolt of the lift signified that they had arrived at there location.
"Please follow me into the conference room," Ephrem said as he stepped forward. As the group was walking in he offered everyone something to drink. The offer was clearly meant for Captain Voran and his officers. Ephrem was glad that John, Mira, and Barbara had all declined.
"No thank you Captain," Captain Voran said.
"Well if that is the case I think we should begin this briefing," Ephrem said as he activated a star chart behind him," as you know our mission is to transport the crew of the Constitution to the Constitution. Starfleet ordered the ship to these coordinates in the Reloria system where they were to study a rare spacial anomly. We are to dock with the ship in the fourteen hours and help the crew transfer everything they brought onboard to there ship."
"Is there anything else that anyone wants to add?" Ephrem asked.

"Fourteen hours," Mira piped in, "what do you think we are, a ship with indefinite warp speed? You'll give the poor chief engineer a heart attack! I'm sure I can find a few interstellar shortcuts here and there, but I wouldn't advise keeping an almost constant speed of plus warp five."
She chuckled. "Then again, we might break a speed record while we're at it. But ah...who'll pay our ticket for speeding?" It was clear that she was slowly turning into her old wicked self again, laughing happily and throwing the captain's comments right back at him in a merry way.
"Seriously though, why exactly do we need to transport the captain and his crew back to his ship? Why didn't he fly it here in the first place, mightn't that not have been a whole lot easier?" She shot Voran an apologetic look. "Not that I'd mind ferryin' you sir, it's my pleasure. I'd fly a legend like you anywhere!"

"The Science council found an interesting anomaly in the sector Mira," Ephrem said smiling," Captain Voran being the man he is didn't want to ruin his crews R&R and allowed some of his officers to perform this easy mission. Also before I forget again, Command has sent us a new security chief, an Ensign Saskia Logan. I'm pretty sure that she is on board already, so we will continue as planned."
Ephrem had been so preoccupied with his own questions and anxiousness that he forgot about the few roster changes that had occured. He would need to get aquainted with these crewman's profiles, but he was sure that they would all be a great addition to the crew, especially their new security chief.
"Well Captain, I of course cannot and will not order you to do anything, but it will be an honor for you to join me on the bridge with my senior staff," Ephrem said," this of course is extended to your senior officers. "
<Tag Voran>
"In fact I would like to know what you think of our ship," Ephrem said," I'm pretty sure that my executive officer would like to know what your doctor thinks of our sickbay."
<Tag John>
Ephrem didn't officially end the meeting, but the mood sure did. Everyone was chatting away making small talk. Even the Vulcan Commander had started a conversation with Mira. Ephrem could only wonder what they were talking about. After about ten minutes of light talking, the officers gravitated towards the door and the bridge.
"Captain, the dockmaster has given us permission to undock," Barbara reported.
"Ok, good, please make sure that Ensign Saskia Logan is on board first," Ephrem said," once I know she is here, we'll get under way."

Blue bed covers. Blue carpet. Blue bathrobes. Saskia dumped her red duffel bag onto the freshly made bed, revelling in the fact that it wasn’t blue, and hoped that it annoyed whoever had picked the colour scheme. Maybe she had missed her calling in life: perhaps she should ditch security and become an interior designer…She quickly scratched that thought; not everybody liked black as much as she did. Not everybody likes blue… She reminded herself, glancing around the petite room. But that didn’t stop these people did it…The quarters were moderate by some peoples standards, but compared to the crowded bunks at the Academy she thought it more than adequate. As if to prove to herself just how much larger it was, she stood with her back against the wall and paced from one side to the other. It only took five steps before her hands brushed the opposite wall, but it was two more steps than she would have been able to manage back on earth. Things were looking up.
As she turned back to the room she heard the door chime sound. “Enter.” She answered immediately, and waited with interest to see who was visiting her already. A small, nervous looking crewman stood in the corridor, rubbing his hands against one another in worry.
“En...ensign Logan?” He asked with a stutter.
She raised a coy eyebrow, making a sarcastic sweep of the otherwise empty room before answering. “Apparently so.” She said pointedly.
“Ah good.” He replied, seemingly unaware of her actions. “Commander Santos asked me to make sure you were on board before we left…” he explained, looking as though he wasn’t sure if he should cross the threshold into her room. She shot him a menacing look, and he remained where he was.
“Nope, I’m back on the station eating a ham sandwich…” She said coldly. “And couldn’t he have just sent a message?” She wasn’t going to make this easy for him.
“Well…well…he…” The crewman trailed off, apparently seeing the logic in her suggestion. “I…we thought we had better check in person that you were here…”
“Well, now you know.” She finished bluntly. “I reported in to the deck officer at least thirty minutes ago. Maybe you should ask him to update his records.” She finished, and practically shoved him backwards through the door as it closed. She rolled her eyes and began to unpack. At the academy she had continuously been informed that she was insensitive by nature, but seemingly was unable to shake the undesirable character trait. Sarcasm seemed to come naturally to her, and her father had always taught her to play to her strengths. Of course, that was before he had sent her away to military school at the age of eleven…but the lesson remained the same.
Once she had her affairs in order the tall blonde slipped into a freshly pressed uniform and smoothed it down with her fingers. It was a shame gold didn’t match the blue, everything, of her room. She thought for a minute she might have walked into the science officers quarters by mistake, and they had specially decorated gold ones for security personnel elsewhere…On reflection, that didn’t seem very likely. It looked like she was stuck with the blue. The change of scenery inside the turbolift was refreshing, and the sight of a working bridge as she stepped onto it was wholly comforting. The Captain was easily located, perched in the centre chair talking animatedly with another officer who was presumably one of their guests. Wasting no time Saskia stepped up and cleared her throat to interrupt their conversation. Commander Santos, she presumed, looked at her nonplussed.
”Ensign Saskia Logan reporting for duty, Sir.” She stated, unconcerned that most of the bridge crew were watching her. Politely the Commanding Officer rose from his chair and extended his hand for her to shake.
“Welcome aboard. Please accompany me to my ready room. Gentlemen.” He added, nodding towards his guests to excuse himself. Inside, he took his own seat and casually gestured that she should take one for herself. She declined, preferring to stand to attention, just as she had been taught. He didn’t seem to mind either way.
“We wondered for a minute if you were actually with us…” he reminded her. Her frown deepened slightly.
“Yes, so your…” She paused. She had been going to say ‘grunt’, but didn’t think that it was wholly appropriate. “…crewman said.” She finished, ignoring the hesitation.
OOC: Hey hope this is ok...I'm a little rusty on my ERA technology, so you'll have to let me know if I'm getting things mixed up...I'll try not to...cheers...

~So her professors weren't lying~ Ephrem told himself. His new security chief was not going to be as easy going as the rest of them. It made no difference really. He would expect her to do her job to the best of her abilities and nothing more.
"Ensign, I know you just arrived, but I would prefer it if you started your shift immediately," Ephrem said," I'm sure that the Academy taught you many things, but there is nothing like hands on experience. I will expect a detailed report on your department and any recommendations you see fit."
"Understood, Captain," Ensign Logan responded.
"Like I said Ensign," Ephrem said now standing," welcome to the Excalibur."
The two once again shook hands and walked out to the bridge. Everyone was present and it was now time for their mission to finally get under way.
"Helm, we have clearance from the starbase, 1/4 impulse and once we clear go to Warp 4," Ephrem ordered as he sat down and waited for his orders to be carried out.

"Legend..." chuckled Voran, slightly embarrassed, "you're too kind, Miss Green."
"He doesn't mean it," said Sloyan to Mira, "he loves it really."
Voran rolled his eyes and Sentelek raised an eyebrow.
"The Science council found an interesting anomaly in the sector Mira," Ephrem said smiling," Captain Voran being the man he is didn't want to ruin his crew's R&R and allowed some of his officers to perform this easy mission."
"Well, it wasn't my first choice, but many of my crew had commitments on starbase and command overruled me."
"Well Captain, I of course cannot and will not order you to do anything, but it will be an honor for you to join me on the bridge with my senior staff," Ephrem said," this of course is extended to your senior officers."
"We'd be delighted." Said Voran.
"In fact I would like to know what you think of our ship," Ephrem said," I'm pretty sure that my executive officer would like to know what your doctor thinks of our sickbay."
"He's a pretty harsh judge." Said Voran with a chuckle, this time causing Sloyan to roll his eyes.
They made their way to the bridge and the officers took their stations, Santos sat down in his chair and Voran, Sentelek and Sloyan all stood around him.
Soon, however, Saskia Logan appeared on the bridge and Santos took her into his ready room for a private word. When they returned, Santos gave the order to get underway.
"Captain Santos, I would be happy to man the science station if it is required." Volunteered Sentelek.

"Captain Santos, I would be happy to man the science station if it is required." volunteered Sentelek.
"You are more than welcomed to Commander," Ephrem said glad that he would have someone experienced at the science console. He took these few seconds to look around the bridge and he couldn't help but smile.
The ship shook as it seperated from the starbase docking clamps, but that quickly ceased. The Excalibur, after a month of rest, was finally on her way again.
"Captain we have cleared the starbase," helm reported," we are also being hailed by Admiral Torres."
"Open channel"
"Captain, I would like to personally wish you and your crew good luck," Torres said.
"Thank you Admiral, we will do our best," Ephrem rsponded.
"I know you will Captain," Torres said who clearly didn't share Ephrem's view," God speed."
~I'll have to prove you wrong Admiral~ Ephrem thought as he looked at the people who would help him accomplish this.
"Helm lay in the course," Ephrem ordered.
"Course laid in captain," was helm's response.
"Engage"

John raised his eyebrows, appearing very innocent. "Don't look at me. Me exec's the one I expect to take the blame."
Saskia Logan appeared on the bridge and Santos took her into his ready room for a private word.
"And now that he's out of the way," started John, grinning devilishly and slipping into the center chair, "let's see what these buttons do."
"A little young for your post," observed Sloyan. "Perhaps you ought to go back to Sickbay where you belong."
"Careful," said John with the best authoritative and reprimanding look he could muster. It was rather poor, especially in comparison to his psuedo-innocent expression. "I have vested in me the powers of command and chief medical officer! That means no one can veto me." He glanced at Mira quickly, who looked pointedly at John's apporpriate seat, and the doctor quickly hopped back where he belonged. Sloyan chuckled as Ephrem and the new security officer came back on the Bridge.

The welcome Captain Santos gave was brief but friendly. The taughtness of it all did not bother the security officer, she was more than happy to get immediately to work. She took her station at the Captains request and began to run vigorous checks of all the systems in place. Naturally once she had heard that she would be moving to this position as Chief of Security she had taken the time to familiarise herself with the specifications of the Constitution Class Vessel. Everything looked pretty normal, but she was going to keep a keen eye out as they left the Starbase. Nothing would get past her.
Santos gave the command to engage and the ship slid into motion. Saskia’s eyes darted across the security console. It hadn’t changed in the last thirty seconds, and she would make sure it stayed that way. As so often happened to her when she was working her eyes began to sting and water. She blinked, only once. She couldn’t afford to miss and trick, and that included anything that happened while she was moistening her eyeballs. All of the bridge crew were intent on their stations as the ship moved out into space. Saskia had taken very little notice of the others when she had entered the bridge, apart from performing a quick head count of their guests for future reference. For now the bridge was silent as their voyage got underway.
A quick peripheral scan showed very little in the surrounding area. There was a single comet, orbiting a wayside planet on the outskirts of their sensors, but nothing else of any substance. Double-checking this as she always did she was finally satisfied that they were in no immediate danger from without, and turned her attention elsewhere. The ships internal scanners were all clear. Naturally, she had expected this, they had only been free flying for six and a half minutes. Satisfied once more, she moved on to exploring the ships computer. Their crew compliment was small, much smaller than what she had thought it would have been. She supposed it matched their present task. Ferrying Captain Voran to his ship was never going to be the ultimate adventure whichever way you looked at it. Perhaps it was best this way, after all, it was only her first time out as Chief of Security. Still, she had rather hoped for something more exciting, having always had great confidence in her own abilities. She had made it so far so fast under the tutelage of her father, and wished to continue to advance in her work now that she was out of the Academy. She sincerely hoped the rest of the crew would not stand in her way.
She had no doubt that Captain Santos had already glanced through her personnel file. It was less colourful then she would have liked, but then again she had only been out of the Academy for two years. There was still a lot of time to prove herself but she had yet to master patience. If he had not done so already, Santos would discover early Saskia’s ambition and drive for success was fierce. She was here to work, and provide security to the best of her ability. He wouldn’t have to worry in that department. Her social ineptitudes, on the other hand, were an altogether different story. Being new to the ship, she would have to remember to keep her comments under wraps. As she had already demonstrated sarcasm seemed to roll off her tongue as though it were her first language. The others, as usual, would just have to deal with it. She never asked them to like her for it.
A frown suddenly jumped over her features as several lights blinked on the console. A mass almost as big as their ship was approaching them at speed from the starboard side. She was just about to announce its appearance to the Captain before she changed her mind. Someone else would probably do that for her anyway. Better to find out what it was first. She cross checked the course of the unknown vessel against flight plans for that sector. Sure enough, she spotted the chart of the freighter ship USS Neptune which matched its trajectory exactly. Still, it was heading on a very close course to the Excalibur’s present position.
“Captain Santos.” She said loudly, getting his attention. “There is a freighter ship heading this way that will pass very close to the Excalibur.” She informed him in a monotone and formal voice.
An officer from the front of the bridge, who she assumed to be working operations, added his opinion. “Agreed Sir. Recommend we contact them and alter our course.” He said, puzzled as to how such a close crossover could have occurred.

“Agreed Sir. Recommend we contact them and alter our course.” He said, puzzled as to how such a close crossover could have occurred.
As the minutes passed, so did the silence. Everyone on the bridge was doing there duties until the newest member of the crew reported something about a Starfleet freighter on an intercept course.
"All stop. Open a channel to the Neptune," Ephrem ordered. The viewscreen came to life as the face of the Neptune's captain appeared. Ephrem was startled by the Captain's appearance. His face was smeared with dirt and suet. The bulkheads around him were in disarray and repairs were going on around him.
"Captain, what the hell happened?" Ephrem asked now alarmed.
"We were attacked on our way towards 307," Captain Jennings responded.
"By whom?" Ephrem asked.
"That I cannot tell you, Captain," Jennings responded," our sensors along side most of our critical systems are offline. We were lucky to find another ship near by and we changed our course to get your attention. Our communications array was damaged. Your officers by now should of boosted your signal strength a couple times by now."
"He's right, sir," Barbara said.
"Captain, we are ready to offer our assistance," Ephrem said.
"No, Captain, I don't think the people who attacked us would go this far into Federation space," Jennings said.
"Fair enough, Captain, but I will contact Admiral Torres to send you some support," Ephrem said.
"That is acceptable, Captain," Jennings said," once our systems our fixed, we'll send you all the information we have."
"That would be appreciated Captain," Ephrem said," Santos out."
"Who would attack a Starfleet vessel?" Barbara asked.
"I don't know, but I want this ship ready," Ephrem said," Ensign Logan, I need you to have security personal ready for anything. Mira, I know we don't have a full tactical staff, but do your best to have all our weapons ready. I don't want to take any chances."

"Change our course accordingly and I want tabs on the Neptune as long as possible," Ephrem ordered as he looked at his counterpart. Would he do the same thing if he was in charge?

Hearing about the report of this phantom attacker, Voran worried, he hoped that the understaffed and mostly inexperience skeleton crew on his ship had not encountered this mystery assailant.
Then, to make sure that his concern did not show, he said "You know, the first Starfleet ship I ever served on was called Neptune."
"Indeed." Said Sentelek turning around from the science station for a moment, "A Neptune-Class, warp 2 capable, survey vessel, in service from..."
"Thank you, Mr Sentelek, no need to show off your encyclopedic knowledge."
"Show off?" Repeated Sentelek, raising an eyebrow.
Voran grinned at the look on his first officer's face.

"I have vested in me the powers of command and chief medical officer! That means no one can veto me."
Mira chuckled then shot him a look of warning as the doors to the captain's office started to open. Quickly he scurried back to where he belonged. Not long after Santos had returned to the bridge with the new security chief, activity started to flurry as a captain Jennings hailed the excalibur.
"Mira do the best you can in getting weapons active," Santos ordered.
"Yes sir," she answered as she turned to face her console. "Shields are functional up to 70%, but if engineering can spare a maintenance team they should be up to 100% in no time. Phasers are fully operational, torpedo's need maintenance." She cast Santos a look of fright. "I'm not going down there to fix it," she stated, remembering what happened the last time.
Once things were arranged, she walked up to the newcomer. "Hi, I'm Mira Green, chief navigator and tactical. Do you need help finding your way around?"

Phasers are fully operational, torpedo's need maintenance." She cast Santos a look of fright. "I'm not going down there to fix it," she stated, remembering what happened the last time.
"Who said I was going to ask you to?" Ephrem said glad that he was able to speak with his crewmembers in a comfortable manner. " Engieering, please send a maintenance team defense field control. I want them at full power before we reach the Constitution."
"Understood, Captain."
A few minutes ago Ephrem was very comfortable with the status of the ship, but Captain's Jennings report had disturbed him. Who would have the guts to actually attack in Federation space? There of course were some possibilities mainly Klingons, Orions, Tholians, and Romulans.
The stifled laughs of the bridge crew aroused Ephrem's attention. It seemed that Captain Voran had made a joke at the expense of his first officer. With a single statement he had been able to drop the tension level on the bridge considerably. Ephrem had been so preoccupied with his feelings of anxiousness that he totally forgot about his crew.
"Helm, Warp 7 I want....."
"Captain you do not have to justify your orders," Captain Voran whispered so that only he heard.
"Warp 7 engaged Captain."
With the increased speed it would take them three more hours to reach the Constitution. Ephrem would feel a lot better if Captain Voran and the rest of his crew were on there ship. From what the Captain had informed him the Constitution was being manned by a true skeleton crew.
"Commander Gold, can we contact to the Constitution from this distance?" Ephrem asked.
"We should be able to?" Gold responded.
"Then try to hail them," Ephrem ordered and waited for the viewscreen to show the Lt. running Captain Voran's ship, but that didn't happen.
"Captain the Excalibur isn't there," Barbara said which caused every officer on the bridge to stop what they were doing and wait for orders.

"Captain, the Constitution isn't there." Said the communications officer causing a silence to fall on the bridge.
Voran's heart skipped a beat and he looked towards his first officer, "Sentelek?"
"Indeed, the Constitution is not at the pre-arranged coordinates." Said Sentelek, "Now scanning on long-range sensors."
As Sentelek worked the science station, Voran crossed the bridge and stood beside Sentelek, looking at the readouts. They were soon joined by Santos.
"Anything, Mr Sentelek?" Asked Santos.
"I am not picking her up on long-range sensors." Reported Sentelek.
"Well where the hell is she?" Interjected Sloyan.
"Just because she's not on the sensors, doesn't mean she's not there." Said Voran.

"Barbara would there be any reason as to why the Constitution isn't at the preordained coordinates?" Ephrem said as he glanced at Captain Voran. He was visibly worried but he was keeping his cool.
"There is Captain," Barbara reported," a Level 5 ion storm passed through those exact coordinates a day ago. They're probably in that nebula, which is 4.5 lightyears away from where they are supposed to be."
"Alright, lets go with that now," Ephrem said," helm I want to get there as fast as possible."
"Mira, Mr Sentelek, the moment we arrive I want extensive scans performed," Ephrem said," try to find the Constitution's warp trail."
"Captain, we are recieving another priority one message from Starbase 307," Barbara reported," they want to speak to you and Captain Voran privately."
"Alright, John you have the bridge," Ephrem said as headed towards his briefing room followed by Voran.

OCC: Okay we are about to reach the meeting point. No one will be there, but we do find a small debris field. The ship was destroyed by the Constitution. Those are the things that need to be done, but you guys can add any tidbits you see fit.

After the alarming communications with the USS Neptune, the bridge staff were all extra alert. The thought of an unknown enemy willing to attack to close to a Federation Starbase often did that to people. So far, nothing out of the ordinary had come along, but Saskia wasn’t going to let anything sneak up on them. Captain Voran broke through the icy atmosphere with a few pointed comments aimed at his first officer, which most of the crew found amusing, but Saskia found demeaning: she had never been known for her sense of humour. When the ensuing quite returned, the another female officer on deck approached her from the front.
"Hi, I'm Mira Green, chief navigator and tactical. Do you need help finding your way around?" By the looks of things she was a couple of years younger than Saskia herself, and a little shorter. That was not uncommon, however, because the young security officer was just over six feet in height. She looked at the other woman from above her pointed cheekbones before glancing back at the empty security console.
“I think I can manage.” She replied coldly, her voice holding none of the friendly edge that the others had. Keeping her features composed, she turned back to the console and looked over the readings she had seen at least twenty times before. Looking unimpressed the young woman took a breath and was probably about to retort when they were interrupted.
“Captain, the Constitution isn’t there.” Came another female voice. Saskia damned herself for not paying attention, and quickly checked with the computer. She was right. It wasn’t there. How could it not be there? A quick-fire question-and-answer session struck up between Captains Santos and Voran, before they came to a decision.
"Alright, lets go with that now," Ephrem said," Helm I want to get there as fast as possible. Mira, Mr Sentelek, the moment we arrive I want extensive scans performed, try to find the Constitution's warp trail." Mira shot back to the helm station to take control, which was probably for the best – Saskia didn’t think it was a pertinent time for a fist fight to have broken out on the bridge.
John Mann was occupying the centre chair when they finally reached the nebula which was identifiable on the Starfleet database as the Dras Nebula. To Saskia, it looked rather dull, and there appeared to be no sign of the missing constitution. Of course, Santos has only been guessing when he ordered them in this direction; they could be still be light years away. The Captain promptly returned to the bridge, only to be informed of the same thing.
“Sir, there’s no sign of the Constitution.” Came the subdued report. Santos frowned.
“What about a warp signature?” He asked hopefully.
The Ensign that had spoken shook his head. “Nothing I’m afraid Sir. Actually, there’s not much of anything out there except…”
“Except what?” Captain Voran inquired. The Ensign paused again.
”I can’t really tell. It appears to be some kind of debris field. There.” He added, pointing it out on the viewscreen. Saskia noted that he had been right. It really was the only thing out there.
“Any idea what it was?” Santos asked.
“If it was a ship, it wasn’t a very big one.” Saskia pointed out. The debris field itself was very small compared to the Excalibur itself, although that didn’t rule out the possibility that it had once been a small vessel. Unfortunately there also seemed to be very little in the vicinity that indicated just what might have blown it into little pieces.

"What can I do for you Admiral?" Ephrem asked cooly. The fact that he was being contacted by the sector's commanding officer didn't sit well with him.
"Is Captain Voran with you, Captain?" Admiral Torres asked.
"Yes sir, he's right here," Ephrem said as he adjusted the viewscreen.
"We have unconfirmed reports that a Federation vessel has just raided the Largos colony," Torres reported.
Both men didn't immediately respond, their minds were processing what the Admiral had just said. Why would a Federation vessel attack one of its own colonies.
"You are the closest ship to Largos, I'm ordering you to go investigate," Torres said.
"But sir, we have yet to find the Constitution," Ephrem said.
"What do you mean, Captain?" Torres asked.
"The ship isn't where its supposed to be," Ephrem said," we are about to reach the destination in a matter of minutes."
"Fine, see if you can locate their warp signature, but finding the Constitution is no longer your main priority," Torres ordered.
"Understood," Ephrem responded not agreeing with the orders. If there was a ship attacking colonies, odds would be much better with two starships.
"Torres out."
Ephrem frowned at the current situation. He had wanted to drop off the captain and his crew and get back to port. That wasn't going to happen, but he would try to make the best out of it.
“What about a warp signature?” Ephrem asked walking back onto the bridge.
“Any idea what it was?” Ephrem asked.
“If it was a ship, it wasn’t a very big one.” Saskia pointed out.
" Ensign Logan, I want detailed scan on that debris field," Ephrem ordered," I want to know what type of ship that was and who was on it."
"Chief, I want to know who destroyed that ship," Ephrem asked looking over at Mira. The ship was pratically rubble, it would take a very powerful ship to do that.
"Mr Sentelek, please help us out on the science station," Ephrem said as he looked over his navigator's shoulder.
"Captain, the debris is from a J-class freighter," the ensign reported," they are known to be used by less than honorable people."
"You mean pirates?" Ephrem asked.
"Possibily," the ensign reported.
"Captain, the ship that destroyed the frieghter was a Federation vessel," Mr. Sentelek," and if I'm not mistaken it was destroyed by the Constitution."

"Well then ensign, I'll leave you to get lost on this ship then," Mira shot back then turned and stalked back to her own station. "She's cocky," she scowled at her neighbour at the helm, "she'll talk differently when she gets lost just once on this ship."
She turned to glance at Sentelek, who'd taken up the science station. "Sir, any sign of the Constitution yet?" The Vulcan shook his head in response. "I'm not picking up anything ei-" Mira broke off as she glanced at the starchart beside her console.
She leaned sideways to get a closer look, wiping a hand over the screen to be certain it wasn't a speck of dust. "Sir, I'm picking up something. It's moving fast on course oh eight seven mark zero four. I can't tell for certain what sort of moving vehicle I'm looking at, I'm not reading a warp trail."
Mira glanced up at Sentelek. "Sir, sensor output?"

"Black box!" Ephrem said getting up from his chair.
"Sir?" an ensign asked confused.
"J-Class frieghters had black boxes, they usually store the last few moments of a ships life," Ephrem explained," if we can find it we'll know who destroyed this ship and why."
"Ensign Logan, Chief Green I want you to work together to find this thing," Ephrem said," right now its our only lead."
