He cursed himself for letting himself get stuck on the blasted ship called the USS Excalibur. Thier mission had been simple. Surprise the enemy, take control of the ships primary systems, and then expand there population by hundreds. That was not going to happen today. Even with Jozara's help, they hadn't been able to complete this vital task.
It was up to him now to get off the ship and reach his comrades. That was goign to be difficult since his host was injuried and there would be security teams everywhere on the ship.
~Please stop, I don't want to die~ his voice said to himself.
~Shut up or I will supress you forever~
When he heard nothing from his host, he proceeded with his plan. He would try to reach deflector or helm control and reroute the transporters from there. If he could he would try to cause a chain reaction throughout the ship once the transport was complete.
=^=All security teams report the Transporter room, we'll be boarding the Constitution=^=
~Damn, I better hurry~

"Security teams? Hey miss posh that's you!" Mira yelled over her shoulder when she noticed Logan wasn't reacting. Logan ignored the girl and grimly continued working at her own console. "Yo!" Mira yelled, getting up from her seat and sharply prodding the security chief.
"Get lost," Logan snapped, "can't you see I'm working? If you're so adamant about me going there, why don't you go yourself."
"Oh miss uppity knows it better huh?" Mira snapped back, "well we'll see who's in trouble when the captain gets back. I am not the one with stripes to lose!" Mira gave her a final scowl before hurrying into the turbolift, fully intending to report to the transporter room.
She ran from the turbolift, strapping her phaser to her belt and slinging the tricorder over her shoulders. When she rounded the corner, she smacked hard into someone who was running full speed in her direction. "Hey!" Mira yelled as both tumbled to the deck.
The male who had run her over scrambled to his feet, scowling down at her. "Out of my way!" he snapped, shoving her roughly aside as she too got back to her feet. Only when he strode past her did Mira notice the odd tools he was carrying, and the direction he was headed. "Something wrong at navigational control?" she querried.
The male turned, his scowl deepening. "None of your business girl, go back to your girlfriends."
"It is my business if navigation is concerned, and I don't recall you being on the navigation staff." It was then that the male broke into a full run and Mira pulled out her phaser, without aiming firing a single shot. The man went down with a scream and Mira was at his side in no time.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth when she turned him over, and the girl knew he was dying. "Who ordered this!" she demanded, "tell me and I'll get you to sickbay."
Light fading already in his eyes, the male turned his head to face Mira. "Must have peace of mind," he breathed, his speech often interrupted by gurgling coughs and grimaces of agony. "Logan," he finally whispered on his last breath.
"Logan?" Mira murmured, then stormed towards the nearest wall panel. "Captain Adams, do NOT beam to the Constitution!" she called, "I repeat do NOT beam to Constitution. It's a trap! Security report to the bridge and arrest Lieutenant Logan. She's a spy!" Fortunately, Mira's had been sensible enough to record the dying man's confession.

When the he felt the phaser fire hit him he knew that he and his host would soon be dead. He cried out in pain once and fell to the floor. In an act of self sacrifice, Jolen, released a chemical agent into his host that would cause complete ecstasy. In the end they were a civilized people, they had just become lost in the quest to keep their species alive.
"Who ordered this!" she demanded, "tell me and I'll get you to sickbay."
He could hear the girl speaking to him. She could not have been older than his oldest daughter. The last time he had seen his daughter was ten seasons ago. He knew that he would join his ancestors soon, but he would need to help the person that set him free.
Light fading already in his eyes, the man known as Ozar turned his head to face Mira. "Must have peace of mind," he breathed, his speech often interrupted by gurgling coughs and grimaces of agony. "Logan," he finally whispered on his last breath.
The light faded into nothing and Ozar of Caldik Prime passed into the afterlife where his ancestors were waiting for him with open arms.
---------------------------
"I will not allow myself to become a host to whatever you are!" Ephrem shouted now desperate for something to happen. He knew that his people were getting the upper hand, but casualties were still being reported.
Without warning the Constitution shook violently which caused both men to fall to the floor. Ephrem seeing his chance arise pounced on his enemy. Jamus ready was ready and landed a well placed knee in the Captain's stomach. Ephrem found himself without breath for a second, but retaliated with a punch to the face. The force of the punch stunned Jamus, which allowed Ephrem to land a blow to the chest and stomach. Feeling that this was his chance to end things, Ephrem wheel kicked Jamus which sent him flying five feet in the wrong direction.
"Computer are transporters still active?" Ephrem asked walking slowly back to his injured crewman.
"Affirmative."
"Transport, Crewman Jennings back to the Excalibur and inform Captain Voran that the pirates are controlled by a sentient species that takes them as host," Ephrem said as he made his way towards the bridge. Before entering the bridge he could clearly hear voices coming from it. He could three distinct voices whom he was certain could be dealt with quickly.
~This is for your crew, Seth~ Ephrem told himself as he took a deep breath and entered the bridge where he found the three pirates to slow to fire back. As she fell to his phaser, Ephrem quickly went to a command console and went ship wide to both vessels.
=^=This is Captain Ephrem Santos now in control of the bridge of the USS Constitution. For the pirates on the Constitution, I'm giving you the chance to leave our ships via shuttle pods. You will not be pursued. Your dead will be returned to you. Acknowledge.=^=

Mira sighed with relief when she heard Santos' voice over the ship's intercom. She dialed in on the captain's frequency to respond. "Captain, you've no idea how glad I am to hear your voice!" she cried, while hoisting the pirates corpse onto her shoulders.
The pirate was heavy but Mira was determined to get him to sickbay, for Mann to examine. "I've got some bad news captain," she continued, "I've caught one of the pirates, but he was injured pretty badly. Before he died, he told me that Logan is our traitor. I've had security snatch her from the bridge and dump her in the brig. I'm now on my way to get the corpse to sickbay. Will keep you informed, Green out."
Mira snapped the communicator shut and walked on. When she finally reached sickbay, she found the doors closed. She knew Mann was on the bridge, but she really wasn't going to drag this corpse any further, and certainly not towards the bridge. She rammed her fist onto the non-budging door, calling Wundt's name. "Yo doc I got a dead guy here....Doc Mann will want to have a look at him. Ship's secure now you can open the door!"
There was no response and Mira walked over to the nearest wall panel. "Bridge this is Green, is Doc Mann still up there?"
(bridge)
"John, something's up in sickbay, did you close the door when you left?"
(Mann)
"Yes well, I got a dead guy here that I'd like to store in the morgue, but I find the doors shut and locked and I can't override. I called for Wundt to open the door but he's not responding and...hey!"
(Mann, anyone in sickbay?)

=^= Bridge this is Green, is Doc Mann still up there? =^=
"Yes, he was about to return to Sickbay," replied Adams, looking at the medical officer as he neared the turbolift. John paused as he heard the conversation.
=^= John, something's up in sickbay, did you close the door when you left?=^=
"I didn't lock the doors, no," said John, confused. "Why?"
"Yes well, I got a dead guy here that I'd like to store in the morgue, but I find the doors shut and locked and I can't override. I called for Wundt to open the door but he's not responding and...hey!"
"Mira?" asked John. The communication had been terminated. John jumped into the turbolift, anxiously wondering what had happened several decks below. Meldova slipped in after him before the doors shut.
************************************************
As Wundt slowly died on the floor, Ben Navidomskis continued with his work. The rest of the medical staff did their best to move as little as possible while the intruder tried to watch all of them at once. The tension in the room was almost palpable. After what seemed to be an eternity, someone knocked on the door. The intruder cursed, attempting to watch all of the medical staff as he advanced to the door. He paused for a moment, and then opened the door, phaser ready to fire.
Navidomskis had not only been working on the engineer. He had also managed to collect a significant array of scaples and other surgical instruments. As the door opened the neurosurgeon threw one at the intruder. It missed by a meter, but by the time it had hit the wall two other nurses had grabbed fistfuls of the small but possibly lethal instruments. One found its mark, burying itself in the arm of the intruder.
His first shot had missed Mira completely, partly due to her quick reflexes, the height difference between the two, and Navidomskis' distracting scapulae. Caught between two hostile forces, the intruder hesitated a moment too long. Mira lunged at him, disarmed him, and knocked him off his feet in one smooth motion. Two nurses moved Wundt up to a bed while the rest of the medical staff turned into a mob. Mira didn't have time to do anything before the nurses had injected the intruder with enough various medications to sedate a Terran elephant. The intruder went limp, his pulse slow and faint. Mann and Meldova arrived moments later, amazed at the sight in front of them. At first, Mann moved toward Mira, but then he caught sight of Wundt's bloodied body. As a doctor, he couldn't ignore the sight of one of his own in such critical condition. Knowing that Mira would understand, John left the business of the intruder to her and Meldova while he rushed to Wundt's side. Sheer blood loss was enough to nearly kill the man, and he certainly should have been dead. It appeared that something - his coffee cup, though John hadn't figured that out yet - had saved Wundt's life from a phaser blast... barely. The man had virtually no pulse, and the coffee shards buried in his chest would prove exasperatingly difficult to eliminate. John began to work.

Ephrem heard Mira's report and couldn't believe what he was hearing. It seemed that these people had been preparing for this for a very long time. The only thing he didn't understand was Logan's involvement. Her record clearly showed that she was a human. The only time that she was ever unaccounted for was a two week shuttle mission while in the Academy. Since it had been in Risa, no one would have given it another thought. He had finished transporting the injured to sickbay and know he would wait until Captain Voran and his crew took care of things and retook the ship. This would make Ephrem face the grim reality that it was a member of his crew that cost the lives of so many.
The thoughts of failure didn't sit well with the young captain. In actuality it was starting to overwhelm him. He wanted to hit something really really hard. Without realizing it his fist went found its mark on the tactical console. He already knew that it would be bleeding, but he didn't care.
"Captain Santos, this is Captain Voran," Voran said over the comm.
"Yes, Captain," Ephrem responded.
"My crew have completed a deck by deck sweep of the Constitution, the pirates have taken you advice and taken all shuttles and escape pods," Voran explained," the ship is ours again."
"Captain, if you don't mind, I would like to head back to my own ship," Ephrem said," and get things going once again."
"Understood," Voran replied," thank you Captain."
Ephrem quickly shook off the pain and transported himself back to his bridge. He found engineers trying to repair systems and consoles.
"How bad is it?" Ephrem asked to no one in particular.
"Bad sir," an engineer responded," Ensign Mann is headed towards sickbay to help out the injured. Though we have been unable to get a hold of them. Chief Mira's communication was cut short."
"What do you mean short?" Ephrem asked perplexed.
"I don't know sir," the engineer responded," we were informed to continue to work with repairs. Security was called to investigate."
"Alright, I'll be down in sickbay," Ephrem said as he quickly got into the turbolift. He quickly realized as Captain he would not be able to sulk in his failures. He was the leader of these men and women and he would need to stay strong in times of peril.
The whooshing sound of the turbolift doors opening signaled his arrival on Deck 6. He was shocked to see the chaos around him. Injured were laid down on the floor waiting to be attended to. He also noticed that the Doctor Mann was attending to Doctor Wundt.
"What happened?" Ephrem asked.

Exchanging a glance with Mann, Mira then acknowledged Santos' presence. "Captain," she started, not sure where to start. "A lot happened while you were away on the Constitution..." In short, she summarised what had happened. "When I entered sickbay, I was shot at, but thankfully this person wasn't a very good shot." She grimaced, then smiled proudly. "Wundt was injured and bleeding heavily. As soon as Doctor Mann came down here, he did everything he could for the poor man."
Again she glanced at her boyfriend. "Doctor Mann will know whether Wundt will make it, sir," she finished. It was obvious though, that Santos wasn't satisfied just yet, as he clearly stood waiting for more details.
"I think you'll want to know how I learned Logan was our saboteur," she continued, looking somewhat sheepish. "I ran into one of the pirates and I shot him. Before he died, he told me Logan was our saboteur. If needed, I'll subject myself to any test to prove that I'm not making this up." Her eyes flashed indignantly at Santos. "I know perfectly well that someone could just blame me for being partial, as it's well known Logan and I didn't get along."
Santos shook his head, seemingly bemused. "There's no need for that chief, I believe you. And Logan had the better of you anyway, should she have wanted you out of the way, she could've easily done so."
"Oh sure," Mira retorted, "maybe...but she's safely in a holding cell now. So...is Adams back on his own ship again? And Sentelek, is he all right after..." She fell silent, fiddling with her phaser. She looked up, suddenly not sure what else to report.

Wundt's vision was blurred as he regained consciousness. It failed to clear, but he soon realised that his entire body felt as if it were on fire. Several people were moving about at a quick pace. After some time, Wundt realised he was on an operating table. He felt something cold press against his neck and he fell back into darkness once more...
"...them all, any one of them could cause a fatal infection. Go over the area again. Ben, we'll need to pump more blood into him. He's already running on epinephrine." John watched his tricorder as medicine he had administered began to repair the damaged organs in Wundt's chest. Wundt would require months to recover fully, and the operation John was performing on him was merely an effort to keep him alive long enough to get him to a Starbase. It was very difficult, not helped with the many other wounded. Anyone with minor cuts and bruises had been turned away. Those that had more serious concerns, such as broken bones, internal bleeding, and concusions waited impatiently while critical cases such as Wundt were attended to.
"I've got the pump," said Navidomskis. "We can begin transferring the..."
...there was a bright light and Wundt winced as pain spasmed through his body. He reached out to touch the light, hoping it would provide some sort of relief. Instead, he was thrown painfully back into the world of Sickbay. He gasped, then cried out in pain. Excited voiced shouted around him...
"...stabalized him, sir."
"Good," replied John. "I want him watched constantly. Ben, take over the head injuries. Nurse Thufir is getting overwhelmed. I need to talk with the Captain for a moment." John made his way to the edge of broken bodies and pressed the comm. "Sickbay to Bridge. Captain, we've got to head to the nearest Starbase right now. I have three wounded who are going to die if they don't recieve proper medical attention, and my staff is getting tired."

Ephrem quietly watched as the doctor tried to save members of his crew. He could only hope that something could be done to save their lives. While these thoughts were going through his head, Mira was also giving her reports. He had almost forgottened about the Logan situation, but he decided that he wouldn't deal with it immediately. He would take care of his crew and ship first.
"Chief, the Commander is resting in his quarters on the Constitution," Ephrem responded hoping to ease the young women's fears," the Constitution is now under the control of her crew. Chief, I need you to help me oversee the repairs to the ship."
(Mira)
"Doctor Mann, I'll be on the bridge," Ephrem said," if you need anything I'm a moment away."
(John)
Ephrem made his way back to his bridge, where repair crews were already hard at work. He had always known that this crew worked well under pressure, but for the first time he realized that they would never show fear. They would deal with the problem, fix anything that was broken in the process and keep going. Yet with all these hardships none of them ever lost the essence of who they are.
"Barbara is the subspace communications array still operational?" Ephrem asked hoping to contact Command.
"Yes, but not a full capacity," Barbara responded from her comm station.
"Alright, I'll be in my ready room," Ephrem said as he made his way into his ready room," you have the bridge."
"Computer contact Admiral Morrow at Starfleet Command. Priority One"
It only took a few moments for the face of Admiral Harry Morrow to appear on his screen. The admiral was known to be strict in his ways, but listened to the captains under his command.
"Ephrem you look like you have been through hell, where is Captain Adams?" Morrow asked getting straight to the point.
"Sir as you know the Constitution was stolen by a band of pirates, who subsequently used it to destroy a Federation colony," Ephrem said.
"Yes, I know that Captain" Morrow responded.
"We have retaken the Constitution, but we have suffered heavy losses and have sustained many casualties. Captain Adams is currently overseeing the repairs of his ship, but it could take days."
"Understood, Captain, I will dispatch the Avenger and Republic to meet you," Morrow said," I'm sorry to hear about your losses, Captain."
"Sir that isn't all," Ephrem said," the pirates were able to take control of the Constitution because they had inside help. They had a spy on my ship, Admiral. Ensign Logan, my new tactical officer is under the influence....................."
The report to Admiral Morrow had become an hour long discussion of recent events. When he had informed him about Logan he immediately contact someone to look into who she had come into contact with in the last year. He also deployed the Fearless and Vanquisher from Starbase 6 to meet with the Avenger and Republic. They would have a complete escort back to port.
"Sir excuse me for a second," Ephrem said as the doctor contacted him.
"Sickbay to Bridge. Captain, we've got to head to the nearest Starbase right now. I have three wounded who are going to die if they don't receive proper medical attention, and my staff is getting tired."
"Understood, doctor, I'll see what I can do," Ephrem said already seeing the dilemma. He couldn't just leave the Constitution in her current condition, but he couldn't allow three members of his crew to die. He activated the comm link to Admiral Morrow once again and informed him of his situation.
"Captain," Morrow said glad not to be in Ephrem's situation," I will not order you to let your crewmen die, but I don't have to remind you how easy it would be for enemies of the Federation to take advantage of the Constitution's current condition. The decision is yours."
"Understood sir," Ephrem said as he cut the link and headed back to the bridge," Barbara inform the Captain Adams that we have a medical emergency and must head back to Starbase 6."
"Understood," Barbara replied.
"Inform him that he will be accompanied back to port by Captain Soto and the Avenger," Ephrem said as he notified all departments that they were about to go to warp.
"Captain we must take it easy on the engines, I can only give you warp 4.7 at the moment," the chief engineer reported.
"Understood, we need to reach Starbase 6 as soon as possible, getting the engine to full capacity is your first priority," Ephrem ordered.
"Course laid in Captain," helm reported.
"Engage"

Stunned, Mira raised an eyebrow, fearing her commanding officer had lost his mind. "Repairs sir? Me?" She took a step back raising her hands before her in dismissal. "Oh no, I'm not an engineer sir, I wouldn't be helping our engineers, I'd be driving them crazy. No sir, I think I'm better off giving poor Doctor Mann a hand."
Of course, she would want to spend some time with her boyfriend, even though she would indeed be helping him out as she said she would. She just wanted the comfort of his presence for a little while.
"I am, however, relieved to hear Commander Sentelek is recovering rather well. I'll be back later on the bridge, to oversee repairs to the weapons systems, but that's all the repairs I'm qualified to oversee. I'm sorry."
The teenage chief turned to Mann. "Where do I start?"

Mira questioned her command ability which caused Ephrem to remember her age. She was so young, but Ephrem had faith in her. He would need to remind her that leading a group of people involved more than just the know how. He would give her time to adjust to her responsibility, but with the current state of things he couldn't give her long.
"Captain, our warp factor has increased once again," Barbara reported from comm stationed. They had left the Constitution three hours ago, but were keeping in touch every thirty minutes.
"Santos to Mann, what's the situation down there?" Santos asked wanting to know the condition of the wounded.

Mira turned to Mann. "Where do I start?"
John glanced around Sickbay. "Um... Nurse Christiansen's only got one functioning arm at the moment. She should be in her quarters resting, but because she's one of the best nurses I've got I needed her to supervise most of the moderate and minor injuries. I'm sure she could use a hand." John moved slightly as if to embrace Mira, but noticed his hands were bloodied.
Navidomskis and a nurse rushed past, carrying a security officer between them. "We've got two more on their way, John," warned Ben as he passed.
"I'll buy you dinner when we get to wherever it is we're going," promised John, discarding his gloves and selecting new ones. He kissed her quickly before hurrying to where two security personnel were waiting impatiently with one of their own.
**************************************************
=^=Santos to Mann, what's the situation down there? =^=
Navidomskis looked at the doctor and moved to take the call. Mann was tied up in one of the last major operations - by now almost ever officer with major or moderate injuries had been attended to. "This is Ben Navidomskis," said the acting executive medical officer. "Dr. Mann is busy at the moment. We've lost two people so far, Captain, not counting the ones brought in without... the ones we never had a chance with. There are a couple more officers we still need to perform surgery on, but I think we'll be finished with all serious cases within the hour. Wundt and several others remain in critical condition. Our best estimates indicate we will start losing people in two or three hours. We are currently operating with two-thirds of our staff."

Mira noticed John's bloodied hand, smiled at him and wrapped her arms briefly around his waist. Then she joined Christiansen and helped her out wherever she could. It was tiresome but rewarding work to treat the moaning injured, then see them smile again as their needs were tended to.
After a while though, Mira realised she was now keeping her captain waiting in getting the much needed repairs done. "I will return later if I can," she first told the nurse, then repeated her words to the chief medical officer.
Mira washed her hands thoroughly before leaving sickbay and sped by her quarters first to get a brief, but much needed shower and a change of uniforms. Not a scant fifteen minutes later, she reported to the bridge and squatted down beside the tactical console, now deeply involved with one of the engineers in repairing the station.
"I'm afraid we'll need a week in drydock to get this fixed," she reported after a long and heated discussion with the engineer, who returned to engineering with an exhasperated sigh. After the engineer's departure, Mira moved over to the security station. "This one too is fried."
The teenager didn't like the fact that for now she had to cover security as well, as she wasn't trained for this.

"Our best estimates indicate we will start losing people in two or three hours. We are currently operating with two-thirds of our staff."
"Navidomskis, you are to find all members of the crew who have any medical training and get them to sickbay," Ephrem ordered," I know it might not help much, but they should allow some of the medical staff to take an hour break."
"Understood"
At last report it would take them fifteen hours to reach the nearest starbase. If Navidomskis report was correct that would mean at most seven members of his crew would loose their lives. Engineering was working as hard as they could, and at best they could cut four hours into the trip.
"Computer what is the nearest Federation starship?" Ephrem asked realizing that his ship could not save all of her crew.
"The USS Avenger"
Ephrem left his ready room and walked onto the bridge where Mira was having a spat with one of the engineers. They stress of the last few weeks was catching up with everyone. He was about to say something, but it seemed to have resolved itself.
"Barbara get me the captain of the Avenger," Ephrem said as he took his seat in the center seat.
"Captain, we are in route to meet with the Constitution, what is it that you need?" Harris, the Avenger's captain asked.
"My ship will be unable to reach Starbase 7 in time to keep my crewmen alive," Ephrem said," the Avenger can dock with us in an a couple hours and take our critically injured to port where they will receive the medical attention they need to survive."
"What about the Constitution?" Harris asked.
"Three other Federation ships are in route as we speak," Ephrem replied.
"Understood, we'll dock with you within two hour, Harris out,"
"Santos to Mann, please prep all our critically injured to be transported within two hours," Ephrem ordered," the Avenger will dock with us and take them to Starbase 7."
Eight Hours Later
"Captain we have arrived at port," Harris reported," I'm sorry to report that we lost three members of your crew, you have my sincere apologize."
"Thank you Captain, what about my other crewmen?" Ephrem asked.
"They are currently in surgery, we won't anything for a few hours," Harris responded," we also have confirmation that the Constitution is on her way towards Starbase 7."
"Understood, Santos out," Ephrem said as rubbed his head. He would need to contact the families of those who died. He had never understood how a captain was able to deal with this part of the job. He know knew that they were never able to deal with it.
"Captain, we will be arriving at Starbase 7 in 2 hours and 12 minutes," Barbara reported.
"Alright, please inform everyone that as soon as we dock everyone is to take shore leave," Ephrem responded," also inform them that if they refuse to take some time off, they will be reprimanded. The port engineers will take care of the Excalibur."
(The End)
