On: <Aboard the Maxwell> <Enginerring>
While aboard the Maxwell Lieutenant Commander Youngblood and Cadet Bonner was captured by the Romulans in the engineering section. Youngblood replied to the Captain and said “I have field medic training and I will stabilize the wounded. The Romulans aboard the Maxwell finally was overpowered by the crew of the Hanson. Yahnie did his best on treating the wounded. Yahnie found his med kit while checking his people.
Yes Ma’am as Yahnie continued to treat the injured.
“As soon as I get everyone stable I will work on getting a message to the Hanson.”
“Captain Reynolds, I am a field medic I would like to treat you and give you something for the pain.
Yahnie finished with the wounded and moved on to the panel. Both Youngblood and Bonner pulled at the panel, It was a bit hard at first but we were able to pull the panel. Yahnie got to the comm. Channel and was able to send the message.
<Old stlye morse code>
Lieutenant Youngblood to the Hanson, We were able to regain control of the ship. We have wounded and they are stable The Message was sent in code.

"Well, what we need to is manipulate the warp drive to send a pulsating signal. In old Earth terms, it's referred to as Morse Code, a series of shorter and longer pulses to represent letters and numbers, and therefore words. Can you think of any outputs we could manipulate to catch the attention of the Hanson?"
Sloan got to work, and along with Youngblood, they were able to cause a powerful subspace pulse with the warp field generators. it's not about creating a signal, the cadet reminded himself, it's about making a signal that will be noticed and found to be unique amongst subspace. Sloans modifications and Youngblood's communications skills seemed to mesh, and soon, a morse signal was being sent out. With any luck, the Hanson would be beaming them off the ailing freighter in no time.

<On board the Maxwell> <Engineering>
Lieutenant Commander Yahnie Youngblood and Cadet Sloan made it so they could contact the Hanson. “Cadet Sloan, It was a genius’s idea to use an old earth style way of communication. I did know how to use the code but you figured out how to send it. Great Job Cadet” Yahnie went over to Commander S'reena Hope “I would like to inform you that Cadet Sloan and I got a message to the Hanson but not sure of a reply yet. We used an old style earth message to send it. We used old Morse code and Cadet Sloan had a way to send it while I knew the method Cadet Sloan had an ingénues way of sending it.”
Mmmm. Youngblood said thinking out loud. A powerful subspace pulse with the warp field generators, I don’t think any one has done it quite that way. “I probably would have sent it through the communication array.” Cadet Sloan Keep sending the signal until the Hanson answers it. Cadet Sloan nodded.
Yahnie went over to the wounded to check how they are doing.

After Yahnie checked the wounded The Commander had some things to say and Yahnie had went over to her and said “Commander, Is there any thing else I can do?

"I would remain out of the cargo bay as well. The radiation levels there are higher than you'll be able to block with a simple space suit. We had to line the walls with a special material... which is probably why you didn't detect anything in the first place," Reynolds warned.
"We'll keep out of there, for now," Commander Hope responded. "Though I have my suspicions you may be lying about that."
Noah looked around. There were way too many people around trying to do his job for him. This was Engineering, not the Bridge! "Alright, everyone. As for the Starfleet personnel, if you're not an engineer, I want you out! No if's and's or but's. You're getting in the way."
<Tag everyone except Sloan>
That left the engineers alone to do their work. "I'm getting a reply to your message," Barry commented from his station.
"What's it say?" Bates called.
"'Unfriendlies attacking, stand by' is all it says," Barry reported.
"You got any operational weapons or shields in this thing?" Bates asked.
"Of course not," Barry replied annoyingly.
"Sloan, get working on those," Bates called out, turning his head toward the Cadet.

"Sloan, get working on those," Bates called out, turning his head toward the Cadet.
Worried and hurried Sam rushed to a console and typed furiously. He reported his immediate findings aloud. "Some of the phaser arrays were damaged, but I think we can reroute the power from them to the remaining arrays. Aft torpedo tubes are completely disabled. I think I can get the forward tubes up and running from here, but we'll need to route power from one of the subsystems, sickbay sounds appropriate, there's few injured here," Sloan looked up to where their attackers had been subdued, "at least none I'd lose any sleep over. Shields are another story."
The cadet shifted to another console, and he looked grim. "Aft shielding generators are completely destroyed. We can link up a suitable grid on the ventral and dorsal sides, but I think it's best we show the enemy our chin instead of our coat tails. I'll link in the navigational deflectors, but all told, we're only going to be able to operate at 75% impulse."
"It'll have to do," The commander said briefly.
"Aye sir," Sloan commented, and went to work arranging the delicate arrangement of systems. He stared intently, hungrily, at the controls, visualizing every ounce of plasma, every hull plate, considering all the angles of the ship and it's system: in a machine this damaged, the balance of power was a delicate, refined art. He lacked the deft skill of experience behind Commander Bates, who's own work was strengthening their structural integrity, fortifying the warp field, maintaining the core aspects of the ships function and survival. It was in Sloan that the brute force of the craft was culled and molded, and he had nothing but wits and inherent comprehension of all things mechanical.
The ship shuddered again, a satisfying hum of energy as the shields reengaged. Cadet Sloan searched his training, his Starfleet expertise, the tactics both esoteric and mundane which would change the ship from a damaged object into a vessel of substance. It was moments such as these, when the terror of the before faded into the confident single minded goals of the here and now that steeled him. He stood from his uncomfortable hunch, his 6'4" frame too large for the cramped controls of the engineering section, and turned to Bates.
"Auxiliary reactor reactivated. Weapons and shields: on-line"

[Elizabeth Reynolds - USS Maxell Captain]
Lying on the floor with her hands behind her back, the Captain fought to reseat herself. The crew was enabling the weapon system to help mitigate the impending doom the Cardassians were going to impose. She knew they were Cardassians. They were the ones the delivery was suppose to be taken to... with stiff consequences if it were late. Their particular faction was very dependent on this shipment.
Reynolds chuckled to herself, realizing the hopelessness of trying to free herself from her bonds. The rest of the crew had already given up. Elizabeth wasn't about to be the first, but realizing she was last, she stopped her efforts.
She snickered to her first officer, tied next to her. "Even if they get the weapons online, they aren't going to have much firepower. This is a freighter vessel. It just has a couple weak phaser banks. Good thing I didn't take your suggestion on upgrades." The first officer agreed. Before the dangerous transport mission had started, he suggested the weapons be upgraded to more of an offensive array, rather than defensive. He was turned down. Reynolds seemed relieved now, but he knew that if they had the new weapons system online, they could have taken out more than the original Cardassian ship that first disabled their freighter... they could have gotten rid of Starfleet as well, thus rendering the argument moot.
Her attention returned to the Security officers they had captured earlier. The accused spy, and his supposed cadet. Reynolds was quite relieved that he was ignoring his superior's orders to search the cargo bay. She wouldn't bring up the cargo hold again unless provoked, in hopes the search was forgotten, or that her warning of radiation scared them off. There was still hope to retake the ship, but it was slim. The crew seemed a bit inept, trying to organize cadets, and train them, all while handling a hostile situation. If one were watching as a non-playing bystander, it would be quite amusing. None of the parties involved found it too amusing.
Yates, the pilot of the ship managed to free her right hand from her bond as the Maxell crew was escorted from main Engineering on Commander Bates's orders. Sickbay would be their temporary home until they were reunited with the Hanson. That was the plan, it seemed.
Yates managed to free her other hand. It wasn't long before she had managed to free the rest of the crew. They all feigned their bondage. It wouldn't be until they got to sickbay that they would manage to plan the escape.

S'reena threw her hands up in exhasperation when Bates and Sloan together ushered them from engineering. "That does it," she sighed, glancing sideways at Youngblood, Bonner and Klang, "remind me to give him a good stern talking to when we get back to the Hanson. Though, he did have a point, even though you apparently did manage to send a message to Hanson. Let's just hope they receive us hm?"
She pushed Reynolds ahead of her, not paying any attention to the conversation between herself and her first officer. "Be quiet," she told them repeatedly, though they paid no heed to her. The Romulan was distracted and it showed that she was concerned for her two instructors and their cadets. "Yahnie, when we have secured our prisoners in sickbay I want you to take Bonner and head for their cargobay. There's something in there they don't want us to find, and even though Captain Reynolds seems adamant on warning us against going there because of the radiation, I trust you to make the necessary safety precautions."
She nudged Reynolds between the ribs to indicate she had to keep moving, then led her into the doctor's office. "You will talk to me," she informed the fallen captain, "because, I assure you, that I am far more lenient than if I let Cadet Klang or even Commander Youngblood interrogate you. Go ahead, ask him if I am easier to get along with than him. Go on, ask him!"
S'reena waited for the captain to comply, then shoved her down in a seat. "Don't move," she warned, before turning her back on the woman to check with Youngblood. "Are you set to investigate?"

"We have the Maxell on sensor range, sir. I'm transferring the coordinates to the navigations console for Commander Shinsei."
The ship shuttered as phaser fire hit again, but the shields held. "I don't know what engineering is doing, but whatever it is, it's working."
The engineering staff had been running smoothly even though Commander Bates was not on board anymore. It was a testament to their reliability for the last year or so without a formal chief overlooking them. S'reena Hope kept a tightly run ship, and the chief-less crew managed to get by once again. The return of the former Chief of Engineering probably invigorated them as well. The Hanson was in no immediate danger, however, the Maxwell was.
"I'm still attempting to clear up the message the Maxell sent us. Their transmitting and receiving arrays are both offline... but one would think that they would be the first thing fixed in that sort of situation."
"Perhaps they are hurt, or the warp core is threatening to implode." Elal logically hypothesized.
"True. In that case, I guess sending messages wouldn't be prudent. There must be some trouble, though, since they did send us something. Can we run it through the phase discriminating algorithms you have been devising?" It was common knowledge that warp fields distorted subspace data transmissions. The properties of such a distortion were generally known quantities, due to the stability of the field. The phase difference could be calculated by calculating the difference in warp field strength along the subspace path. However, with a breaching core, the warp field became chaotic. Normal decoding algorithms became useless.
Elal, on the other hand, had been working on a way to clean up chaotically distorted data. By classifying the quantum peculiarities, the Vulcan science officer created subsets of algorithms that would optimally retrieve data. It wasn't perfect, and one had to empirically test every classification, but in experimentation it worked. It was his first chance to use the algorithms and prove to Konal that he was useful.
Admiral Drew asked for status.
"We saw a series of pulses from the ship earlier, and ran it through the universal translator, but it came back with nothing. It's due to the quantum distortion. Elal is running his declassification algorithm against it. We may be there by the time it finishes, though." She didn't intend an insult, but the implication was that the algorithm was too slow. Elal had noted the words, but not the tone. Not that inflection generally mattered much to a Vulcan. Still, he heard what he wanted to hear.
"Estimated time of arrival is 10 minutes" a bridge officer told the Admiral.
Commander Manto continued, but thinking out loud. "Hopefully the Maxell doesn't have the same Cardassian problem that we have!"

As Noah worked on the structural integrity field, his attention kept returning to the mysterious cargo in one the Maxell's holds. This was especially because it was interfering with the structural integrity field.
"Auxiliary reactor reactivated. Weapons and shields: on-line" Sloan proudly reported.
"Excellent. Well done, Cadet," Bates said, then turned back to Barry. "What's in that shielded cargo hold?"
"Like I'm going to tell you," Barry fired back quickly.
"Well then you're going to show us. Sloan, take Barry here with you and have him show you the contents of the cargo hold. Take a phaser with you. If he tries anything, shoot him."

[USS Maxell - Sickbay]
In less than ten seconds, sickbay was thrown into complete chaos. The Captain started by disarming Commander Hope, who was completely caught off guard. The security officer, Youngblood, was overcome by Yates before he could come to aid. The others had no time to react before the Maxell crew had taken them over. They hadn't even a chance to call for help.
Binding them with medical restraints meant for patients who were hemorrhaging or seizing, Captain Reynolds, her first officer, and their crew dragged the conscious officers to the corner of sickbay. Lucky for them, the chief engineer had kicked the Hanson crew out of engineering. He wouldn't be looking for them anytime soon, which gave them time to act.
The bonds weren't fool proof. The Hanson, according to Youngblood's earlier statement, was probably on the way. The only hope for Reynolds and her crew were to make a quick escape. Options were weighed... weighed quickly... after the first Cardassian fighter sent a phaser blast onto the almost defenseless ship.
"They are here already. You fools! You led them right to us with your stupid warp burst!" It wouldn't have been hard to find the large ship adrift in space, but Reynolds was very intent on blaming the Hanson crew for their shortcomings. "We need to get out of here. Leave the Hanson crew to fend for themselves!"
Reynolds led the team out of sickbay to the nearest transporter pad. It was online, luckily. But where were they going to transport to?
"I have an idea Captain." Yates said, full focused. The pilot was probably the calmest of all that were present. "We'll hail the Cardassians. Let them know that the Federation ship interfered with our delivery. We can asked to be beamed aboard. After all, it wasn't our fault."
Elizabeth considered this. Cardassians didn't care about fault. They cared about results. Whether or not it was the Maxell's fault for the late delivery, they were there to collect their shipment, and insolence would be inferred by the lack of arrival at the pre-arranged dropoff point. Still, remaining on board meant that the Cardassians would probably take their cargo, then destroy the ship with them on it.
"If the Cardassians are here, then surely Starfleet has made it too. Their ships are probably faster." The dilemma was now to decide whether Starfleet would handle their fate, or the Cardassians. The Cardassian fate was uncertain, and thus one could dilute one's senses into thinking it may be better. The Starfleet route was quite clear. A federation penal colony, probably for the rest of their lives.
"Hail the Cardassian ship. Tell them we will be among the supplies when they beam them out. Tell them that we have been infiltrated by the federation, and seek asylum. Remind them that we are their only source for the medical supplies we have been shipping them, and to let us get captured or killed means they will not be receiving any more shipments any time soon." The bargaining chip they had on the Cardassians tipped her decision in favor of the unknown.
"I've established a connection, Captain, with the lead Cardassian ship. They are being attacked by the USS Hanson. They said make it quick." The Captain explained the situation, but there was only one problem.
"We will need to drop our shields to transport the equipment and supplies on board. We approximate for two seconds, which will be long enough for the Hanson to detect and permanently disable us. And you have destroyed our other fighter.. we only have two out here." the Cardassian captain sounded rushed.
"Acknowledged." The Reynolds closed the channel.
"Beam us to the doors of the cargo bay." Reynolds ordered. Yates set the controls, ran over to the transporter pad just in time for it to energize. The cargo bay had been reinforced due to the radiation of the supplies, so transport could not be directly into the hold.
"The radiation levels are poisonous... but if we are in there for a short time the effects should be reversible." Reynolds told the crew. "We'll have to drop the ionophillic barrier in order for them to be able to beam us out."
"Acknowledged. Barrier dropped."
"I am commanding the ship to move directly between the Hanson and the Cardassian fighter. Their cargo hold will have enough room for roughly a quarter of the supplies." Yates entered some commands into the computer.
Sparks flew in engineering as the ship made an unexpected turn, sharper and more direct than the ship was typically capable of handling.
A glow was seen by the crew as they, and part of the cargo were transported to the Cardassian ship. Once materialized, they awaited their fate on the bridge of the smaller vessel.
"Brace yourselves" someone yelled, as they outmaneuvered the latest Hanson fire.
"We don't have time to destroy the Maxell, sir!"
The Cardassian fighter Captain acknowledged. "We have what we need. Take us back to alpha base."
[Hanson Bridge]
Sir, the fighters are breaking off their attack, should be follow?"
"We need to make sure our crew is alright on the Maxell. We can't afford to. Take us within transporter range and beam everyone straight to sickbay. I want a containment field around all non-Hanson personnel. We'll sort this mess from there." Admiral Drew, and the Hanson crew, were still oblivious to the happenings on the Maxell. The first priority was to account for their crew members.
Konal acknowledged the last statement directed toward her and communiqued down to the transporter chief, who readied the transporters.
"Ready, sir." he replied to Konal.
"We are in range. Engage!"

ooc: I am moving things forward a little, after a brief backpost. At the end of my post, ALL OF US are back on Hanson and we're pursuing the Cardassians but they WILL get away!
ic:
S'reena had just turned her back to check that Youngblood and Bonner were following her orders, while Klang was keeping an eye on the Maxell's first officer. A second later, she was jumped from behind and overpowered seconds later. Her phaser was pried from her hand and she felt its pressure against the small of her back as her other hand was firmly held behind her back. From the pressure on her arm, she figured the slightest movement would break it, and she wasn't quite ready to suffer any injuries now.
She was soon joined by an angry looking Klingon and confused looking security chief and his cadet. They were bound, then left to fend for themselves. "Don't worry," she whispered, as she watched Reynolds and her crew leave, "we'll be out of here in no time." She tugged at her bonds, then turned her back to Youngblood. "Commander, why don't we give eachother a hand? Klang, Bonner, follow suit!"
They had freed eachother in no time, then ran out of sickbay after their escapees. Not a minute later, they found themselves running off a transporter pad, straight into a console. "Ow," S'reena scowled, rubbing her arm, then gave her collegues an embarassed smile. "That's never happened before, how odd." She turned to the transporter chief. "Bates and Sloan are in engineering aboard that vessel. We were separated."
Turning back to Youngblood, she beckoned him and his two cadets. "We're going to the bridge, Im sure Admiral Drew will want to hear what you have to report." She wasn't surprised to see an angry looking Trill the moment she stepped onto the bridge. Dharma Meri trusted no-one and absolutely hated anything with pointed ears, Romulans in particular.
"It's good to be back admiral, it was some adventure on that ship. They didn't want to be helped and thought we were pirates. They do have cargo concealed in their hold and tried desperately to keep us away from it. I'm sure Commander Youngblood can now scan their vessel and see what was in there, after we disable it and go after the Cardies." She shot Konal an apologetic look. "No offense intended commander."
=^=Bridge this is transporter room. We got Bates and Sloan, they're on their way to engineering now.=^=
"Good," Drew replied, while listening to his first officer's report, "Bates this is Drew. Give the Hanson all she's got, we're going after a few mercenaries!" Smoothing his tunic, he sat down in his seat, motioning for S'reena to do the same. Other than that, he still hadn't acknowledged her presence in any way, nor had he spoken to her. From this, S'reena gathered that he still hadn't forgotten her betrayal several months ago. And it would still take several months for him to get over it. She understood, but it still hurt.

<Maxwell’s Cargo Bay>
Lieutenant Commander Youngblood and Cadet Bonner headed for the Cargo Bay when they left engineering. As they arrived to the Cargo hold Cadet Bonner was leading the way since he knew the layout of the Maxwell’s ship. Cadet Bonner opened the door of the Cargo hold and went inside. Once inside they saw several crates that were sealed. As Lieutenant Commander Youngblood went to look around while Cadet Bonner went ahead and opened one of the crates. When the crate was opened up the Cadet had a surprised look on his face. “Commander Youngblood, Come over here and look at the contents of this case.” Yahnie looked in the case and said, “We must report of what we found to Commander Hope.” “Since we cannot communicate because of the dampening field blocking their communicators, we must head to sickbay.”
<Maxwell’s Sickbay>
Commander Youngblood and Cadet Bonner arrived in Sickbay and Cadet Bonner spoke to Commander Hope. Commander said the young Cadet “We found out what they had in the Cargo Hold.” “They are smuggling medical supplies.” When the Commander turned to the Captain of the Maxwell got out of her restraints and overpowered Commander Hope and disarmed her. As the commotion was going on Lt. Commander Youngblood was about to come to her aid and was overpowered by the Maxwell’s crew.
The Hanson crew again was in control again and no way to contact the Hanson. Hopefully they received our message they sent earlier. The Hanson crew was once again bound by restraints. The Cardassian fighter fired on the Maxwell and it rocked the ship. The next moment the Hanson crew was beamed to the Hanson’s sickbay.

All of a sudden, Bates and Sloan were caught up in a transporter beam.
"Main Engineering, pronto," Bates said to Sloan as he, in a daring move, launched his chair clean off the transporter pad with a rolling start, and barely paused to make sure Sloan was following behind him before heading out the door.
"Bridge this is transporter room. We got Bates and Sloan, they're on their way to engineering now," the Transporter Chief said, but Bates only heard the first half as they went down the corridor.
"This is the downside of using my chair's power system to liberate," Noah said as he rolled towards the turbolift. "I can't use my transporter."
"Bates this is Drew. Give the Hanson all she's got, we're going after a few mercenaries!"
"Acknowledged, Admiral," Noah said as he entered the turbolift. "Deck 11," he ordered, then tapped his comm-badge. "Bates to Brac, we're gunning the engines. I want you to have squeezed every millicochrane out of them by the time I get there."
"Yes Commander," came Roland's reply over the comm. "But what are you going to do?"
"Get all the ones you didn't, of course," Bates replied, smiling.
"Ah, yes sir. We're on it," Roland replied.
Noah looked up at Sloan as they left the turbolift. "All this should seem a piece of cake for you now compared to the past few hours."

Noah looked up at Sloan as they left the turbolift. "All this should seem a piece of cake for you now compared to the past few hours."
Sloan nodded. After the experience on the Maxwell, the engineering section of the Hanson was a welcome sight. He realised of course, that away missions and danger were a common fact in Starfleet. But then again, that was the trade one made for such an oppurtunity.
The engineering section was a buzz with activity. His first priority was to find a station from which to work. Taking up near the warp core, he tried to asses the efficency of the core. The crew had done a good job of handling the Hanson in Bates' absense, it was true. But the matter injectors were not well optimized, and core output was lower than it could have been. Sloan made some careful adjustments. An almost imperceptible change in the timber of the core's hum told him he had done well. "Commander," Sloan called out to Bates, "I've optimized our matter/antimatter flow, and we're pushing about 99.6% efficiency. Anymore, and I'd be worried about our dylithium matrix."
A crewman joined Sloan, monitoring the dylithium matrix. "Bates wants everthing we can give him, but I doubt we'll have any luck finding those Cardassians. They had some head start."
"Not necessarily," Sloan realised. He remembered his tricorder suddenly, and opened it. "You know, when we were on the Maxwell that ship, the Cardassian ship as it were, beamed out part of the crew. They dropped their shields momentarily to do so. My tricorder downloaded all the sensor logs it could before we were beamed off the derelict." Sloan downloaded all the data he had into a PADD, and looked it over. "I think the Maxwell's passive sensors may have picked up their engine signatures."
The crewman nodded. "You might want to get this information to the admiral."
Sloan agreed. He stepped into the turbolift near engineering. "Bridge." He ordered the computer tersely. In a few moments, he stepped onto the Hanson's bridge. Every station was manned and ready. The cadet aproached the admiral, who sat in the command chair. Despite all the experiences on the Maxwell, Sloan still felt like a green cadet, especially in the pressence of an admiral.
"Sir," the cadet said to Admiral Drew, getting his atention.
"Cadet Sloan, glad to see you're back in one piece."
"As am I, sir. Actually I wanted to discuss the Maxwell with you. Before we were beamed back to the Hanson, I took the liberty of downloading some of the Maxwell's sensor logs to my tricorder." Sloan handed the PADD to the admiral. "These are the passive sensor logs from the few seconds the Cardassian ship dropped its shields. It has a pretty acurate assesment of the ships energy signature. It also detected a minor ion leak in the port nacelle."

Admiral Drew, nodded, correcting the Cadet, "Maxell, not Maxwell.... I even made the mistake once myself,". The news was good news. It meant they would be able to pursue successfully.
"Great work, Cadet,"
Konal, meanwhile, was in the science lab. The cat and mouse game didn't need anyone as high level as her monitoring something like ion trails. She left that to Elal. He had wanted more responsibilities anyway. Instead she was down in the science lab analyzing the cargo material found on the Maxell. It was behind a forcefield, and her hands had to be inside a special material to penatrate it.
~/\~ Analysis complete ~/\~ the computer chimed as she had just finished rotating the cap off of the canister.
"That was quick!" Konal could remember a time when it took at least twenty seconds to give a full melocular decomposition of a substance. Now it was three. It was amazing how computing abilities have increased in just a few years.
She looked at the readings. The implications of what she viewed would probably cause more questioning on her part, and the fear of what she saw made her turn away. She didn't expect this to be related to the Outpost 1.2.9 mission, but it seemed increasingly so.
=/\= Computer, please route the data to Admiral Drew's ready room. =/\= He'll probably want to see this, she figured. She cringed as she spoke the command, but since the computer could not recognize Konal's uneasiness, it cheerfully acknowledged that the command had been executed.
She flipped on the view screen again, trying to see if there was some hope it would have changed. [Illium-629] was on the screen. The hallucingen that Vash and his cohorts were trying to steal from the Outpost dilithium mine. It was contained in medical containers, which was why Youngblood's first assessment was that the cargo hold had medical supplies. But this wasn't the type of medicine that one used for good... and the Cardassians were very interested in this substance. She was embarrassed for her own kind, but at the same time thankful that she had defected years ago. The transport or sale was highly illegal.
She pulled her hands from the forcefield and removed the gloves. They weren't contaminated by the radiation - the radiation being the main inducer of the the transatonic mental state. She checked herself for radiation, and on the satisfaction that she was 'clean', she headed back to the bridge. The information wouldn't be needed for catching the Cardassians and the Maxell crew, but Drew and Hope would probably want to know why they are in the predicament they are in.

The Cardassians had escaped and the engineering cadet came to them with sensor log data that he wanted them to see. "Go ahead cadet, tell us what you discovered," S'reena encouraged him, after ordering Crystal to set course back for Conqueror. With the Cardassians gone, taking the Maxell crew with them, there was nothing much left for them to do. "Take the Maxell into tow," she ordered, then turned back to Sloan. "Please continue."
She listened impatiently as the cadet explained what the sensors indicated, though her eyes widened when Drew showed her a message he had just received from Manto. "Illium-629!" she exclaimed, gasping in surprise and shock. "That's highly illegal, not to mention toxic and dangerous! Sloan, tell me, did your sensor logs show any interference that could be caused by this radioactive substance? The behaviour of the crew, does it coincide with Commander Manto's findings?"
Again she listened, but more attentively now. She bolted upright when an explosion rocked the ship and she reached to steady the cadet, firmly gripping his arm to keep him on his feet. Beside her, Drew cursed as he was nearly tossed from his seat and she heard the security chief's cry behind her when he was tossed to the deck. "Report!" she cried, the cadet and his report forgotten.
"The Maxell exploded when I activated the tractorbeam," Crystal apologised, looking stricken. "I don't understand..."
"I do," S'reena replied, grinding her teeth in anger, "they probably sabotaged the ship so it couldn't be taken into tow. Beam the debris to cargohold two, we'll examine it when we get to Conqueror. I'm sure something will be found sooner or later. Increase speed to warp 6, I want us to get home as soon as possible."
"Warp 6," Shinsei acknowledged, "ETA to Conqueror is three hours."

Sloan straightened his uniform, still feeling the anxiety caused by the Maxell's destruction. The Cadet considered Commander Hope's question.
"The crew of the Maxell were agitated and paranoid. Not to mention their chief engineer seemed disoriented at times. Illium-629 would certainly cause the symptoms, though I'm no doctor." The cadet looked over the sensor logs on the PADD. "I don't have any sensor data that corroborates it, though. Then again passive scan wouldn't pick up Illium isotopes, I'm afraid."
An imperceptible change in the Commanders expression told Sloan that S'Reena Hope was a woman who was not pleased "no" and "can't" and "wasn't able to's". She didn't seem ruthless, but she did expect results. "However," Sloan added quickly, "I have some experience in decrystalized dilithium. With your permission, I might be able to assist Commander Manto in further analysis of the Illium. Could yield some valuable information."

Conqueror at last. This was only the third... fourth..? time returning from a mission. This was one of the first ones where she hadn't been subjected to a whole bunch of physical stresses, other than being hurdled through space.
She approached Elal, who was busy submitting the rest of the samples to molecular tests. "So far, we have mostly Ilium-629, with some traces of dilithium." Since the illium was used in dilithium mining, this wasn't unusual. The substances were probably stolen from a dilithium mine. Konal knew the nightmare of the outpost wouldn't end.
"Are you almost finished?"
"Indeed, Commander. Cadet Sloan asked to help, but I told him I could handle it myself. Plus, he's graduating soon." The last sentence Elal said with almost too much gratification, as if he was happy to rid himself of the cadet. "He was a valuable asset, I hear."
Konal agreed. "But not as good as you, of course."
The ship shook as it made it into dock.[END] Congrats, Samuel Sloan. Future posts should be placed here. section47.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=SBCON&action=display&thread=1192390387&page=1#1192390387Great mission everyone!
