Xin-Ling and Dr. Johnson were close ... very close. They had an arrangement similar to what she enjoyed with Commander 1C Edwards. Off-duty, amongst themselves, they were TJ, Barbara, and Xin-Ling (or, in the case of Xin-Ling, "Puddin'" – Dr. Johnson's pet name for her. TJ, of course, did not use the pet name.) They had been friends since the days when both the Asian and the Irishman were cadets at the Academy.
"It good to see you again, cadet," commented Xin-Ling as she took Athar's hand in response to her extending it first. "I remember we supposed to talk, but it not seem to happen. Maybe soon?"
"First chance we get?" asked the cadet, and turned to her Instructor to receive her assignment, while Xin-Ling waited. ... She giggles at that last bit, loving the "run amok" phrasing. "Well, get to it, Cadet; yer first target will be Commander TJ Edwards. Now if ya don't mine, me and Commander Chan here got some talkin' to do, and you got some councilin' to get about. As the acting CTSO watched Cadet Athar leave Dr. Johnson's office, Barbara extracted a hot herbal tea from the replicator and brought it to Xin-Ling.
"So, this is the first we've had to be chattin' in awhile. Take a seat, Puddin'," she invited.
Xin-Ling sat and sipped her tea.
"Tell me, sugar ... didja come because I asked yah too, or is this a purely social call?" Barbara grinned broadly.
"I have question," began the petite Asian officer.
"Out with it, girl."
"Well, I am want to arrange combat training for those aboard vessel."
"Now, that would be good, Xin-Ling, considerin' Akleth didn't have time to instruct this batch o' cadets."
"But thing is," commented Xin-Ling, her eyes downcast, "no one else will take duty of instructing class. I not sure I able to teach well."
Barbara looked at her incredulously.

What are you kiddin me? Yer Bruce Lee in a skirt!! I seen you fight Puddin and you caint fool me. Heck who you think i learned my kickin from?? ::just absolutly flabbergasted that her friend would doubt herself about THIS:: Ya should definatly do it, Ill even help out. I only got the one cadet this term...i got the time unless theres a crisis. Hey maybe we'll get lucky and Akleth will show up for a class or two. Hes a Klingon...they like that sorta thang. ::Barbara loves Klingon psychology personally...its so very dominant::
::She finally retakes her seat, still sipping her hot chocolate and looks at her delicatly pretty friend:: Yanno what your problem is Puddin? ::though this isnt the best way to begin a counceling session...which this has now become...her friend needs help and thats her job, so she wins twice really:: Your problem is that ya lack self confidence. Thats somethin we can address yanno? ::smiling warmly:: I think its very important for you ta do this here class honey. It would work wonders for your self esteem and confidence. Yer a much better fighter than ya give yerself credit for. Even back in the Academy you was like this. I suspect its your Momma :: psychiatrists always suspect the Mother...its very Freudian:: Im just kiddin ::she laughs::
::She then looks at her friend not having let her speak very much whilst barraging her with supportive and entirely correct information, looking at her as both a friend AND a patient:: As yer official "Head" Doctor onboard, i prescribe a combat class. And maybe a night on tha town or somethin...a lil bit of good old fashioned fun. Sure...were on a mission. But we dont gotta hate tha trip. ::she then giggles and lets her friend speak again, knowing nothing of the new information comming in::

Xin-Ling had not so much doubted her ability to fight as her ability to teach. But still, what Dr. Johnson had said had merit. This was a new experience for her, but being acting CTSO, this made her an instructor, and, thus, teaching such things was part of her job.
So, with new determination, once Barbara and Xin-Ling had finished talking, she set herself to instruct any cadets that might be interested. She told herself that if she would ask Commander Edwards for permission to begin the class, had he the authority, being former CTSO, he would require each cadet aboard to attend. The approval, however, was to be sought from the Captain.
Before she could check with the Captain, though, she needed to have everything in place. The holodeck she had previously reserved had to be programmed for the occasion.
She shared with Ensign Williams from her department exactly what she wanted, and asked him to enter a program to match her specifications, which, for lecture, was similar to the rural setting where Jordan and Athar had met her before the Hepta spacedock.
For combat sequences, Xin-Ling wanted variety. There were arid deserts, urban jungles, forests, and a multitude of other settings available. Beyond that, she had Ensign Williams program in a variety of assailants. She toyed with the idea of including someone like Diana the Terrible, but decided against it at the last moment, not knowing that much about her.
For sparing, she included a dojo.
When all this was set, she made her way to the captain’s quarters to seek permission for the Combat Class. She presented her request to him, and waited patiently for his response.

::sending her friend out with new confidence Barb smiles and sets out amongst her rounds. She really should see the Captain...mostly because she was late but also because she hasnt spoken to him in quite some time. Even a Borg type had to have a psyche. Plus she was curious about the training simulation, she somehow lost the finer details of it. EIther way its been far too long since shes inquired about our good Captains well being...she sets out for the bridge to find him::

Athar set out in search of Commander Edwards, her first target for the day. Being the first Officer she decided it would be a fair bet he would be on the bridge. Athar headed for the turbolift, entered and requested the bridge.
OFF I'll leave Commander Edwards to decide how our encounter should start.

TJ felt it, there was no doubt about it. Those of his cultural background had often been marked, with or without reason, as brawlers, some even making a living from the fact, such as John L. Sullivan of three centuries back. While his own confrontational tendencies had been redirected into more constructive venues, TJ was still a fighter, and this was why he could not simply wait there to "see what the end’s gonna be."
The image of the danger the Hepta was facing by this time filled the entire monitor, and this was not good. TJ wanted a more open view, to keep informed of any activity, particularly that of a hostile nature, the thing in the viewscreen represented.
"Mr. Franz," he said, directing his attention first to the Navigation cadet currently covering the Operations console, "Lower magnification t’ keep that thing in full view on our screen, an’ keep me informed o’ th’ level o’ magnification in current use anytime ye change it.
Also, ‘tis highly interested I’d be t’ know if, providin’ we follow our current course an’ speed, will there be a collision with that thing on th’ monitor?
An’ keep me informed of any change in th’ status o’ that thing on th’ monitor, as well as its distance from us." <Tag … Cadet Franz> At that moment, near the Bridge on deck one of the Hepta, the turbolift door opened and Cadet Athar finished her trek to the command center of the vessel. She paused momentarily at the door of the Bridge, took a deep breath, and entered.
With a whoosh! the door closed again behind her, and she again paused, just for a few seconds, intending to determine which was Commander Edwards. That was not hard to do, as he was now seated in his command chair, but the instant she determined which he was, just like the others on the Bridge, her attention was riveted on the viewscreen as she took in the drama being played out there.
TJ noticed the teal-clad cadet entering, but could not at this time recognize her.
Like everyone else on the Bridge, TJ was highly concerned about the lack of perhaps-needed power to avoid or repel the approaching danger. Tapping his comm badge, he made his obvious concern known.
"TJ t’ Commander Hayash-Kyat."
— /\ — "What is it?" — /\ —
"I’m wonderin’ just how soon full power can be restored t’ our systems, me friend. We could be usin’ ‘em up here about now."<Tag … Harash-Kyat> Next, turning to the cadet at Navigation and his instructor, Commander Trenia Torban, he continued to line out his avoidance of the upcoming catastrophe.
"Mr. Zoarial, please see t’ it you’re prepared with an evasive course if it becomes necessary, accordin' t' Mr. Franz's report. Proceed with it on me instruction t' do so." <Tag … Cadet Zoarial and/or Commander Torban > Finally, turning his attention to the young cadet sitting at the Tactical console, Linda McCallister, TJ proceeded to set up the final and (hopefully) unnecessary requirement – that of combat, should it become necessary.
"Ms. McCallister, might I be requestin’ yer hands be preparin’ t’ provide us with defensive firepower th’ instant it becomes available, startin’ with phaser banks, and proceedin’ with photon torpedoes, on me mark only, is that clear?"
"Yes, sir," replied the cadet at the Tactical console, taking her orders as near to completion as she could under the current conditions.
Now that his instructions for dealing with the situation were set, TJ spoke to the Counseling cadet who had, up to this time, stood silently at the entry to the Bridge.
"Ye may proceed, colleen. What can I be doin’ for ye?"
TJ’s characteristic smile was absent from his face, being replaced with a look of concern over the current situation. He was anxious to avoid a hostile confrontation, but needed to be prepared, should that dilemma be forced upon them. <Tag … Cadet Athar. Be gentle with me … this is my first time out as an FO.>

OFF I'll be as easy as I can, this is my first counselling position.
Athar walked up to the Commander. Athar: Commander TJ Edwards I presume? TJ: Yes Cadet. How may I be of service? Athar: Well Commander, my first assignment is to go though the bridge, engineering and medical staff and observe how they react to things. Basically I would like to have a chat and then watch for a bit so I can report back on whether the bridge staff are under stress. If that is ok with you Commander. If you don't mind my saying so, you seem to have a bit if situation here. This would be the perfect oportunity for me to work my magic so to speak, would you mind filling me in.
OFF: I'm not sure how to go on from here and you'll be best at explaining the situation TJ. btw hope I'm npot doing too badly

You're doing just fine. As your confidence increases, so will the length of your posts and the level of characterization in your simming. Also, don't forget that, sometimes, the situation may actually call for just a short post. The main thing I'd suggest at this stage is to relax and have fun with this. We won't bite!
And how to go on? Just "go with the flow".Dividing his attention between the viewscreen and the Counseling cadet, and, under the current circumstances, being forced to give most of it to the viewscreen, TJ answered.
"Well, as ye can see, colleen, th' Bridge staff is definitely under a level of stress. An' while I can't release ye t' go about th' Bridge crew freely at this time, ye might start with Cadet Linda McCallister at th' Weapons console there. From her, ye can talk with whoever isn't required in th' forefront o' th' situation.
"An' as t' workin' your magic, you're welcome t' do so."
As an afterthought, TJ was able to force a weak smile and say, "Welcome t' th' Hepta, cadet."Linda at the Weapons console is an NPC. Feel free to have her say anything to you or respond in any way you'd like, as I just created her at the last moment to have someone at that station.

It had been but scant moments since the menace on the viewscreen had made its appearance, and, things now nearly prepared for avoidance or combat as soon as the needed power was restored, TJ felt the need for the Captain to be on the Bridge.
He tapped his comm badge.
"Commander Edwards t' Captain ONE."
After a few seconds, the response came.
— /\ — ONE here. — /\ —
"We have a situation on th' Bridge, Captain. 'Tis thinkin' I am that your presence up here would be highly desirable."

As Commander Edwards was now in session with Cadet Athar, Zoarial was left alone at his console, at first he wasn't able to locate Commander Torban, so Zoarial stressed.
He wasn't ready for a task like this, he knew he wasn't. But he had to figure a clever tactical maneuvre to win as much time as possible for the engineering team to get the fire power online. Just going straight ahead, away from the other vessel was an option. He had to know the speed of the other vessel, and the capable speed of the Hepta itself.
"Mr. Franz, could you please inform me about the current speed of the alien craft? And is it locked on target, flying to the Hepta the fastest route as possible? I need to know this to do some maths about how we are able to escape from the alien ship"
<<Franz>>
After that, Zoarial turned to Commander Harash-Kyat
"Sir, what is the maximum capable speed of the Hepta at the moment? We're now flying at 2,5 warp factor, but I'm definately sure that this speed is not sufficient to elude the danger."
<<Harash-Kyat>>
As Zoarial got all this info, he did a little maths.
A moment later he had the whole plan figured out. He saw that Commander Edwards was once again available.
"Commander Edwards, if I may, I think I've figured out a plan that will give us as much time as possible; do you know the problem with the hare getting to it's lair and the dog chaising the hare? This is how I'm planning to do it."
Zoarial got a notepad out of his jacket, and drew everything out.
"Together with the alien vessel, we are currently flying in one direction, like this."
<-----------
"I'm going to alter the Hepta's flightdirection, I'm planning to fly like this."
^ (this is the new flight direction of the Hepta | | | |<---------- (this is the flight direction of the other ship)
"This way, the other ship is constantely altering it's flight-direction, thus traveling a lot more kloms, this might provide us with enough time to get the shields and weapons online. Please correct any flaws in this plan, or throw it completely away, it's a mere suggestion."

:: Barb heads in through the sliding doors of the Bridge just to take in the atmosphere and look in on her Cadet...but she sees the place is much busier than she had at first guessed. She stands there for a few moments out of the way hearing the various words spoken and seeing various screens. How does she always end up comming here when its pandemonium? Nods quickly to the bridge crew and says to Athar:: might wanna make it quick in here. Come with me and we will go about tha less busy areas. We dun wanna get in their way. They will need us later ::winks and turns to leave the bridge::

"On my way," ONE tapped his combadge again and stood up. He quickly wrapped up the work he was doing on his computer and walked to the Bridge. Commander Edwards was sitting in the center chair, Doctor Johnson was standing by the turbolift, Commander Torban was at the helm with one of her cadets, and a myriad of other cadets and officers were busy working at their stations.
TJ stood when the captain entered the Bridge and briefly filled him in on the situation. "Who's at Ops?" ONE asked, then answered his own question in the same breath. "Cadet Franz?"
"Yessir?"
"I want you to scan the heck out of that thing. Tell me everything you can about it."
"Aye sir." While Cadet Franz was scanning, ONE stepped up to helm to talk with Cadet Zoarial about his evasive techniques. After a few minutes, Franz came up with something. "Captain, the object appears to be made mostly of metal, with a lot of hollow sections and support structure in the middle. What's strange is that the alloys used are all different, matching several different species from across the quadrant. Oh my, there's even some Federation signatures showing up."
"How much?" ONE inquired.
"Well, it's extremely hard to tell, sir, but I'd say about... one ship's worth."

Jason: Doctor, since we're most likely to have a disaster situation soon, I would recommend we return to Sickbay.
Jordan: Agreed. Let's go.
They headed to the nearest turbolift just down the hall.
Jason: Deck 12
The doors closed and they began to move.
Jason: I joined Starfleet Medical because I wanted the challenge that Space Medicine offered. I'm certainly going to see what it's like now.
The door opened, and they stepped out the turbolift, and went down the hall. They entered Sickbay.
Jason: And here's the heart of all of it.

To Athar:
Were gunna head down to tha sickbay. If things is bout ta start goin down then we should be on-hand ta help. Sides sickbay is a much better place to start off...as ya saw, the bridge is total pandemonium. I think its always like that.
::she steps back into the turbolift and motions for her Cadet to enter:: We can getcha some hands on practice this way.

Having relinquished the command chair to him whose it was, TJ was glad for the Captain's presence on the Bridge. This released him to do what he had previously felt no time to do.
"Beggin' pardon, sir," he addressed the Commanding Officer, "but 'tis wonderin' I am if I might be havin' your permission t' contact th' heads o' th' various departments that don't know as yet what's happenin' up here. I'm thinkin' at least they should be kept posted, an' they can inform their people as they feel th' need."
Anyone who's been able to watch Trek TNG/VOY, etc. more recently than I, is there any link by comm badge I could use to contact all Department Heads at once, or else can I do that from the FO's chair?

When TJ requested permission to inform the Department Heads of the current situation, Captain ONE looked at him, first with an annoyed amazement, then softening slightly.
"It would a good idea, Mr. Edwards."
As soon as he had spoken these words, his comm badge chirped, and he was called away by the officer he had previously been with to continue dealing with a highly dangerous internal situation. Heading toward the turbolift, he turned slightly to TJ and spoke.
"Mr. Edwards," he said, "You have the comm. And one other thing..."
"Aye, sir?"
ONE forced a slight smile.
"Try not to blow up my ship."
"Aye, sir."
And with that, the Captain left the Bridge.
"Cadet Zoarial, 'tis likin' your plan I am. Lay in th' course ye propose, an' proceed on me mark."
<Zoarial>
"Mr. Franz, open a channel t' all Department Heads."
"Aye, sir."
"Edwards t' all Department Heads. I'm requestin' ye t' take a look at your private viewscreens."
He turned his attention again to Cadet Franz and said, "Mr. Franz, relay th' image from th' main viewscreen t' every department head's personal monitor."
Tapping a few areas of the console, Cadet Franz responded, "Done, Mr. Edwards."
"What ye're seein' on your monitors," TJ continued to the Department Heads, "is what we have on our main viewscreen. That image is approachin' us, an' fast.
"Relay this information t' your department as ye may feel th' need t' do so, an' in th' meantime ... prepare yourselves for an increase in activity! Edwards out."
Looking around on the occupants of the Bridge, TJ spoke to all.
"An' now, mates, keep our communications open an' our responses fast. Mr. Franz, inform me th' instant full power is available.
"Th' rest o' ye – all o' ye, for that matter ... let's get this incident behind us, an' continue on with our mission."

Xin-Ling was in the Security/Tactical office when TJ's announcement sounded over her comm badge, so she turned on her private monitor as requested. Along with every other department head, she was made aware of the situation the USS Hepta was currently facing.
After the initial surprise reaction, her face went to a steely mask of determination as she told herself, "Commander Edwards say to prepare for increase in activity? Then I prepare."
Arming herself with her darts, which had been stored in her new desk, she made certain she could be reached by comm badge, and proceeded to the holodeck to look over the components of the Combat Training program one last time before she planned to report to the Bridge.
Fifteen minutes in the holodeck were sufficient, and Xin-Ling started for the Bridge.

As Commander ONE left the bridge, it seemed for urgent matters, Commander Edwards turned to Zoarial. He spoke: "Cadet Zoarial, 'tis likin' your plan I am. Lay in th' course ye propose, an' proceed on me mark." "Aye Sir!" Zoarial responded, and he continued "OK everybody here, listen up, we have to minimize the speed-loss at the maneuvre were going to make. So pay attention I want to make a sharp turn, 90 degrees to starboard. (OOC is it spelled that way??? IC) I want to build up our speed to warp factor 5, after me make the turn. Speeding up now will only spoil energy, and then a part of the surprise is gone. Ok, on my mark, momentarely disengage the right engine, my calculations have pointed out that 0,00072 miliseconds will be sufficient for a 90 degree turn, after this momentarely powerdrain, I want both engines at full power, and when we reach warp factor 5, I want to maintain that speed. Ok, does everybody understand what to do?" "Yes Cadet Zoarial" the crew responded. "Allright everyone! On my mark!"
Zoarial was now waiting for the official command to start this plan. He hoped his calculations were right and that he would buy enough time to fix the weapons. "All set Commander Edwards!" he said.
Carefully listening and watching, he waited for Commander Edwards command.

Jordan watched her comscreen and sighed. Knowing TJ, there were going to be some high-level tactics going on, which meant people might get a bit thrown around. She stepped out of her office and joined Jason in preping sickbay for any injuries that might come about. Her adrenaline was running and she worked like mad. She looked over at a nurse and saw what happened next in what seemed like slow motion. The nurse had been running some diagnostics and was lowering her finger to hit one of the keys. Jordan suddenly realized what was going to happen next and ran towards the nurse, whose finger was still lowering to one of the keys. She hit it just as Jordan grabbed her and then it exploded in front of them. They flew backwards together and the nurse landed on top of Jordan. She moved herself out from under the nurse and saw that there was no hope of saving her, her jugular had been severed and then cauterized by the heat of the blast. Jordan slowly stood up and felt a stabbing pain in her leg. She fell down and she managed to focus on her leg before losing consciousness. It was a twisted, mangled mess. A nurse rushed to the bio systems and was unable to do anything. The keys had all been blown out. Everyone's attention went to Jason.
The blast rocked the ship slightly and everyone on the bridge looked around.
Lieutenant: What was that?

Jason looked just in time to see Jordan pull back the Nurse before a pieces of equipment exploded, rocking the ship. The nurse was killed, and Jordan had a badly damaged leg. She stood, fell over and went unconscious. A nurse checked the Medical systems.
Nurse: Medical Systems are down!
All eyes turned to Jason. He grabbed a tricorder and moved to Jordan. He ran the peripheral over her, checking for any broken bones.
Jason: Her leg is broken. Let's get her onto a bio-bed, carefully
Nurse: But theyre not working!
Jason: That doesn't matter. I'm not treating her on the floor!
With the help of 2 nurses, Jason lifted Jordan to a bio-bed.
TJ: =/\= Bridge to Sickbay. Whats happening down there, Jordan? =/\=
(OOC: My apologies for not mimicking your accent, Commander, but its not important here)
Jason: =/\= This is Cadet Black. We had an explosion. It looks like the entire Medical system overloaded. You'll have to send an Engineering team down here if you want more details. I've got wounded to deal with. =/\=
TJ: =/\= Is Doctor Mackler alright? =/\=
Jason: =/\= No, sir. The explosion killed a nurse, and Dr. Mackler's leg is badly injured. Shes unconscious. I've got to get to work. Black out =/\=
Jason turned his attention back to Jordan. Her leg was broken in two places, and her entire leg was charred black with third-degree burns. Shrapnel from the explosion was embedded in her leg.
Jason: We've got to get this bio-bed working. Someone get Engineering to send over a portable generator.

Images of castigating Mr. Murphy of "Murphy's Law fame flooded TJ's thoughts. Had it not been for this blowhard of the twentieth century, doubtless this mission would be going smoothly. But no! This Murphy guy had to write: "If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong, at the worst possible moment and in the worst possible way!" TJ wished Murphy was alive and aboard. He would have loved to have Commander Chan clap him in irons!
From his chair, he flicked a switch and connected with Engineering.
"TJ t' Harash-Kyat."
–/\– Go ahead, Mr. Edwards. –/\–
"There's been an explosion in Sickbay, an' they're requestin' an Engineerin' team. Please comply.
"Oh, an' when might I be expectin' repairs t' weapons systems an' warp drive functionality?"

"Priority t' warp drive repair, followed by weapons. An' mind ye, don't be forgettin' Sickbay's request for an engineerin' team. Commander Edwards out."
"Mr. Franz, can ye be tellin' me if we have t' be preparin' for hostilities?"
<Cadet Franz>
Ms. McCallister, direct your weapons t' th' stern. When – an' if – we fire, I want it t' be when that ship is in pursuit. But do not fire unless I give th' word. An' when I do, fire immediately, usin' phasers at full; be prepared, if necessary, t' follow with a volley o' photon torpedoes. "
"Aye, sir," answered Linda.
"Mr. Zoarial, position your hand close t' th' course ye laid in. On me mark, move into it immediately. I want t' see if they follow us."
<Cadet Zoarial>
"Mr. Davis, open a hailin' frequency t' th' ship. I want t' have a palaver with them."
Cadet James Davis attempted to do so, but turned to TJ.
"No response on any frequency, sir."

Zoarial suddenly noticed a little rumble and he immideately thought the enemy ship was taking them under fire. Confused, he turned to commander Edwards.
"sir...?"
But the commander was allready busy talking to someone else on his combadge.
"There's been an explosion in Sickbay, an' they're requestin' an Engineerin' team. Please comply." he said.
<<And explosion in sickbay???>> Zoarial thought, <<that too?!>>
"Sir you might also want to inform them..." zoarial started whispering, but he suddenly realised his stupidity <<the firing did not happen, the explosion in sickbay did>>
How horrible! And in such an inconvenient time! He wondered if anybody got hurt.
<<Never mind about that now>> Zoarial thought, as Commander Edwards was now turning to him:
"Mr. Zoarial, position your hand close t' th' course ye laid in. On me mark, move into it immediately. I want t' see if they follow us."
"Aye Sir!" Zoarial responded, immideatly forgetting all the commotion in sickbay, and turning to the console. "Programmed course: 000,0 I want to change to 045,0 on my command" Zoarial murmured, "The speedincrease is not yet available so we'll let that be." After that he spoke up to the helm-crew. We are only going to make a 45 degree angle, so I only need a shut-down of 0,00036 seconds instead of 0,00072 seconds is that clear?"
As everybody nodded, Zoarial typed the new course in his console, he waited for the official command from commander Edwards to change direction.
