“Thank you Commander,” Drew said, taking the offered seat, “and don’t believe a word of what she told, the section menace is Commodore Sonak Reckus.”
There were laughs across the table, although Drew was amused to see, some were nervous laughs. Taking a few slips from his glass, Drew turned back to face S’reena, in order to answer her questions.
“You may, or may not be pleased to hear that I will be sticking around Commander, there is a little surprise in store for you.”
“Not another one” S’reena exclaimed, “I am not sure how many more I can take in such short time.”
Drew noticed the beaming smile as she said those words; it was the smile of someone who had just had some very good news. The sort his wife would have at a certain time.
“You know Commander, I seem to recall last time we had met, you had just had a child,” Drew said, a smiling coming to his face.
“That is correct sir,” S’reena answered.
She still had that smile on her face, and a twinkle in her eye, although she looked like she was in pain at the same time. Drew hadn’t failed to notice her present condition, clearly something horrible had happened to her recently, but the news she had had seemed to be cheering her up no end.
“Would I also be correct if I were to say ‘congratulations’?”
“Indeed you would sir,” S’reena replied, laughing a little.
“Excellent news,” Drew said, beaming back at S’reena, “but tell me Commander, what has happened to you?”

S'reena's smile abruptly faded, and she looked away. "Too much sir," she said softly, "admiral McCormick has suggested that talking about the experience might lift the weight off my shoulders but I'm not sure I can."
She felt the encouraging hand of Joan on her arm, and smiled as the teenager gently squeezed it. "The Hanson was taken over by Romulans, and I pretended to be one of them and while doing so assisted Commander Bates in sabotaging the ship. I failed a test of honour." S'reena trailed off and sipped her tea, which now had gone stone cold. "They set an interrogator in me and I am very certain the person had quite a ball. I wouldn't talk to him, and he relished in inflicting injury and agony. I nearly lost my life, and my child."
She paused again, desperately thinking of a way to change the subject. "however, Doctor Black says I am well on my way to recovery and I am encouraged to take short walks, leaving this horrible thing at home. But enough of me, how have you been? What happened when you had disappeared?"

She notices the admiral enter before she can reply to the commander. She smiles as he joins the group.
"I'm Lt. Commander Joan McCormick, sir. It is a pleasure to meet you. Oh and I know all about S'reena being a handful, sir, I served with her for a time. Now, S'reena, what rumors would those be? I only heard about the ones about you. You cadets have gotten quiet, something wrong?" She says noticing the quiet duo.

"Me? A handful?" S'reena exclaimed, mock insulted, "hardly admiral. You mustn't believe one word she says!" She grinned broadly at the younger officer, but her smile fell when the announcement came that Hepta instructors and cadets had to report to the Hepta as soon as possible.
"May the wind be in your sails commander," S'reena called after the retreating young woman.
Now that the young people had departed, it was only herself and Admiral Drew left at the table, who seemed to be pleased to have a little more room to sit comfortable. On the next table, Doctor Black was sitting all by himself, seemingly looking a bit lost now that his company had departed as well.
"Doctor, why don't you come and join us!" S'reena called to him, waving him over, wincing slightly as she did so. She was feeling much better, even though some muscles still hurt a lot more than others did. "Admiral Drew, my I introduce you to the Hanson's chief medical officer, Commander Jason Black. Now I know, you're probably surprised that Salek has left, but Salek needed new challenges. I assure you though, Jason is up to par, and he is much nicer I tell you! At least he smiles when he says things when trying to comfort a patient. In that aspect Salek was so....dull."

Jason came over. "Thanks, I was feeling a bit lonely watching Joan leave. Commander, I saw the wince, are you alright?"
"I'll...be fine," she said. She moved her arm a bit.
"Uh-huh," he said, sounding unconvinced. "I'd prove you wrong except my tricorder is back with my uniform," he said, noting the civilian clothing he was wearing. "Just be careful. You've got another little person to watch after," he said, smiling a bit.
He then turned to the Admiral. "Pleasure to meet you, Admiral. I've heard of you.
"Oh?" said Drew, "And what have you heard?"
"Oh, nothing you need to worry about, sir," he said and chuckled. "Just your name, rank, position, species and general age. But given that you're our new Commanding Officer, in a short time, I'll now quite a bit about you," he said winking.
"Stop by and see me in Sickbay, when you get a chance," Jason then said, and waited to see the Admiral's response, to gauge his attitude towards physicals, sickbays, and doctors in general.

Paikea had left the little group a half hour ago and it seemed that there was a new person in it. When Paikea saw who it was his jaw just dropped. It was Paul Drew former captain of the USS Fang.
"Paikea your back," Joan said as she called him over. Paikea slowly headed towards there way. He was awedstruck.
"Paikea this is Admiral Paul Drew, the new Captain of the USS Hanson," Joan said.
"Hee-ll-looo Admiral," Paikea said. He couldn't believe that he was meeting one of his heroes.

Drew smiled as Dr. Black mentioned sickbays and physicals, as many of Drew’s former Doctor’s had found out, it was incredibly difficult to get him to go to sickbay for anything. Of course, there was no need to tell Dr. Black that just yet.
“I’ll make sure to come down and see you as soon as I can,” Drew lied, hoping that his poker face was as good as he believed.
Dr. Black smiled back at him, and for a few seconds Drew was sure that Black had sussed him out.
“See that you do Admiral,” Black answered, “I’ll be ready and waiting.”
It was just then that Cadet Paikea approached the table, eager to escape the Doctor’s talk of physicals; Drew rose to greet Paikea, the young officer seemed a little nervous as Drew offered him his hand to shake. Out of the corner of his eye, Drew could still see Black watching him; clearly this was going to be one Doctor it was going to be hard to avoid.
“So Cadet tell me,” Drew said, trying to change the subject of conversation, “what will you be studying?”

"Well sir, I will be studying in the science department," Paikea said smiling. He just loved science, that was a big reason that he had joined starfleet. He always wanted to discover new and more advance technology and phenomena

“See that you do Admiral,” Black answered, “I’ll be ready and waiting.” You liar, he didn't add.
He noticed how enthusiastically he greeted Paikea. I've had too much experience with stubborn superiors to be fooled by that. All he needs to do is take a look at S'reena's record and he'll be really sure.
"Well sir, I will be studying in the science department," Paikea said smiling.
"It's a shame you couldn't study under Science under Joan McCormick, Cadet," Jason added. "She's quite good. But alas, she's doing Engineering this time around."

S'reena chuckled, she knew exactly what a handful commanding officers, or first officers for that matter, could be when it came to physicals. A classic example was Captain Kirk who often managed to dodge his physicals.
As the two men gazed her way, she quickly picked up her mug and tried to sip it. However as the waitress had just replaced her cold tea, her drink was extremely hot. She slapped her hand over her mouth and rubbed it, hissing as she set the mug back down, gazing at it angrily.
She glared at the men as they chuckled in return. "Right, I'd love to see your faces when you burn your mouth on a drink you expected to be cold. Doctor, I'm coming to sickbay later today, I was due a check up anyway."
She turned her attention back to Drew. "So how is your family doing these days? Joanna still into science? I'd love to exchange a few ideas with her, she is coming to the Hanson too isn't she?"

“She is doing well thank you S’reena,” Drew replied, “we haven’t decided yet what arrangements will be made with my family, for now it will just be me aboard Hanson.”
“My own husband works in sickbay,” S’reena said, “You will no doubt get the chance to meet him properly this time.”
“Hopefully,” Drew answered, taking another slip from his drink, “last time I was on the Hanson, you had just had one of your children.”
“And now she is about to have another,” Black laughed, “the Hanson is going to be even more crowed than usual.”
Drew had to agree with him there, unlike the Galaxy class ships, Intrepid class had much less room for family members, usually only the ship’s senior officers were able to bring any family aboard. S’reena’s new arrival would no doubt require work to extend her quarters.
“It must be something they put in the Hanson’s replicators,” Drew joked.
“Or someone just forgets to take there birth control pill,” Black smiled.
“So when is your baby going to be due S’reena?” Drew asked, taking another offered drink from the waitress.

S'reena narrowed her eyes as she mock-glared at the CMO. "Are you accusing me of negligence doctor?" she said, but smiled brightly at him, "I do believe that I was the one that kept saying that I didn't want to go through yet another difficult labour." The Romulan first officer turned to the new commanding officer. "If our calculations are correct," she pondered, "the baby should be due around Christmas."
She sipped her tea, which again had gone stone cold and she grimaced. "Somebody please remind me to drink my tea when it's still warm?" she chided her company. "At any rate, a shame to hear that Joanna isn't coming to the Hanson just yet. I was looking forward to exchanging a few scientific ideas with her."

Jason chuckled. "Commander, perhaps you shouldn't talk so much. Then you wouldn't neglect your tea like you did your birth control pill," he said flatly, with a straight face.
When she started to look slightly offended, his face broke into a smile. "Only joking, ma'am. It doesn't matter how this baby was concieved, I'll give it the best care I can. I already lost a pregnant woman, and I'm not losing another one."
"Ah yes, I forgot about that. How did her husband take it?" she asked, her face softening.
"Ramon did not well take it well. First time I'd ever seen him cry. It was to be their first child, after all." But then, trying to lighten the conversation somewhat, he turned to Drew. "So Admiral, what department did you work in before you became Command?"

“I started out on the Engineering track,” Drew answered, “when I was first assigned to Section 47, it was as an Operations Manager aboard the South Carolina, in fact at one point I even served as an Operations Instructor aboard the Hanson.”
“I remember,” S’reena said smiling, “you were good friends with Admiral KezTrek.”
“She was my first First Officer,” Drew laughed.
There was a brief silence, as the three officers enjoyed there drinks, and the offered food the waitress had just brought over. The officer’s mess had actually emptied considerably in the last hour or so, largely due to the Hepta departing from the station. Drew was looking forward to be able to taking the Hanson out; it had been a long while since he had last had his own independent command. There was no feeling like being in the centre chair of your own starship.
“So what made you two go into training Cadets?” Drew asked, after finishing most of his plate of food, eager to hear more about his new crewmates.

"I completely blame Admiral Keztrek for that," S'reena smiled, "she was the one who managed to persuade me. Actually, it wasn't really a persuasion, it was more of an order. Truth to be told, this had never happened to me, usually I was shunned when it came to being assigned. After all, who wanted a Romulan aboard? But the admiral saw beyond that, and I'm still grateful for the opportunity she gave me."
She paused a few seconds, downing her stone cold tea in one gulp and set the mug back down. "At first I was teaching science cadets, and I must add that got me in quite a bit of trouble often enough. Then, quite by surprise, I was promoted to first officer. Though, I admit, that position hasn't kept me out of trouble either. Yet, I felt appreciated, and for some reason suddenly people started to trust my judgement instead of second-guessing it."
S'reena paused again, feeling rather embarassed at even admitting it. Though, she did still feel that new officers, and also cadets, mistrusted her based on the knowledge of her species. She mused that it would be a long time before the drilled in mistrust against Romulans would be extinct.
"How about you Jason?" she asked.

"That's a really good question. I'm not sure what it was exactly," he said, looking back and forth between his two superiors.
"When I graduated from the Academy, I was approached and asked to stay on as an Instructor. I had a passion for my work, and wanted to pass that on. So I accepted. I like challenges, and keeping an entire crew healthy and fit for duty, while training someone else who to do all that, certainly qualifies as a challenge."
He then turned to S'reena. "Commander, I've seen your file, having made an addition or two to it myself. Not only has the promotion not helped keep you in line, you getting into trouble seems to have increased since becoming First Officer," he said, winking.

“I have yet to meet a First Officer who could keep out of trouble,” Drew laughed, “It’s an occupational hazard.”
“The same can be said of Captain’s,” Black said, “in my experience anyone connected to command of a starship cannot stay out of trouble.”
“Very true Doctor,” Drew said, “but I tell you what all command officers are good at staying out of, sickbay!”
There were laughs all round the table, and as Drew reflected, he was glad he was getting on so well with his new crewmates. It could only be a good sign of things to come.

"Do you really think so admiral?" S'reena disagreed, "seems to me the last commanding officer did a great job getting to sickbay almost every mission. One of the last missions he spent a great deal of time in sickbay. Granted, so did I, but that isn't the point."
She flashed a grin at Jason. "Good luck though doctor, this one seems determined to stay out of sickbay, no matter what," she laughed, thumbing at Drew. "And I am going to try that trick too, after I can walk again...."
Now, she frowned at Black. "How long until I can again?" she asked, "I'm really starting to get tired of this thing. No matter what Noah says, I'll never get the hang of using this thing properly."

"That's only because you'll eventually have a choice, Commander. Bear in mind that Commander Bates is unlikely to ever be free of that chair, unless implants can be designed that his body will not reject," he said, coming off more stern than he intended.
He lightened his expression. "As I've said, you are currently allowed an hour's time each day outside the chair, which I'll increase next week, if you're doing well. You should be able to be completely free of that chair by the start of the next training mission. Particularly if you undergo physical therapy."
He leaned back, and looked between his superiors. "And as far as avoiding Sickbay, I want you both to bear in mind that I've had plenty of practice standing up to superiors on this. I find it odd that although they're supposed to setting a good example, Command officers usually avoid sickbay, creating a bad example for their crews." He went quiet, letting that fact get under their skin.

As Noah wheeled himself towards the restaurant district, there was one thought on his mind: FOOD. His stomach growled to seemingly emphasize the point.
He went along the restaurants, trying to decide what tickled his fancy today. Klingon food didn't; he didn't feel like having his food move around the plate on its own. Vulcan food was too bland for his taste. Canjun was too spicy. The Starburst looked a bit full...
But another look at the Starburst, and it attracted his attention. A certain First Officer floated in a hoverchair, so he wheeled his chair over.
Getting closer, he saw Doctor Black present as well, along with an Admiral. Carefully pushing his wheelchair up and onto the little raised area they were sitting at. S'reena noticed him coming.
"Ah, Commander Bates," she said, waving him over. "Meet our new Commanding Officer, Rear Admiral Paul Drew," she said, indicating the Admiral present.
Noah wheeled himself over. "Greetings Admiral. Commander Noah Bates, Chief Engineer," he said, extending his hand.

John had been on the base now for a couple of days … walking her and there, not on duty so he didn’t feel obligated to be busy working on official business. He did take great care in looking over his curriculum for the cadets who would be under his care; he decided to go find the instructor resource room to see what the Academy had to offer.
On his way to find where this resource was, he passed an establishment called “The Starburst”. Its sign was very colorful and put you in mind of … well … a starburst. Looking in he saw all the action and thought to himself … this was the place to be … at least it seemed that way. Forgetting all about doing some research on finding research material, he “plotted” a course into the restaurant to see what and who he could find. Entering, he made his way over to the bar and parked on top of a stool and ordered the only thing that he hadn’t had since he left Betazed … uttaberry crepes.
After ordering, he turn and looked over the room and saw a table full of high ranking people, because he really hadn’t talked to anybody since he arrived, he told the guy behind the bar that he would be back for his crepes. Walking over to the table he addressed the table, “Hello, don’t mean to interrupt, but my name is John Graxen, the new counselor instructor for the Hanson. Would you know where I could find any of the commanding officers?” Asking obvious questions was his way of breaking the ice. He hadn’t seen any images of the crew, he could have been talking to the crew now, but what a way to get introduced he thought.

S'reena grinned brightly at the newcomer, and then at her fellow officers. "Have you seen any Hanson instructors?" she asked them, her grin widening.
The men around her shrugged indifferently and shook their heads, all of them very obviously trying to stiffle their grins. "No didn't think so," S'reena laughed, then motioned for the newcomer to join them. "Why don't you sit down, and I'll give you a round of introductions," she continued.
She first pointed at Drew. "That guy overthere, with the bar in his collar is Rear Admiral Paul Drew, the new Hanson commanding officer. The young man overthere is Doctor Jason Black, CMO and this guy overhere in the wheelchair is Commander Noah Bates, CEO." At last she thumbed herself on the chest. "I'm Commander S'reena Hope, Hanson's first officer."
She noticed he still hadn't sat down, and gazed at them with a stunned expression on his face. "Sit!" she said, a little more forcefully, shoving a glass towards him, "looks like our new counselor needs a drink, what do you think fella's?"

"I agree!" Jason said. "Drink up, counselor. Don't want you getting dehydrated," he said winking
Graxen sat down and tenatively took the drink. "I can't tell you how happy I am to have you aboard," Jason continued. "So often recently I have been forced to be both Doctor and Psychologist to the Hanson crew. And although I paid attention in my psychology courses, it is no substitute for a degree in Counseling."
He now took a sip of his own drink. "So, what's your specialty in Psychology? I assume you had one before you specialized to Counseling?"

John knew it was the crew … he could sense the mischievousness in the people around him just after he had asked the question. But he had found by working around people without telepathic abilities, it made most uncomfortable. So, he just let them have their fun … and smiled back at them.
Commander S'reena Hope noticed he still hadn't sat down, and gazed at them with a stunned expression on his face. "Sit!" she said, a little more forcefully, shoving a glass towards him, "looks like our new counselor needs a drink, what do you think fella's?"
Jamey didn’t understand the forcefulness behind S’reena’s voice … it seemed a bit frustrated … like she had recently been through something that made her … well … not as willing to wait on things as she maybe could be. But that didn’t matter … he didn’t need to form an opinion on first sight, it was time for drinks; and boy, was he glad he found his crewmates.
Dr. Jason Black now took a sip of his own drink. "So, what's your specialty in Psychology? I assume you had one before you specialized to Counseling?"
“Yes,” John said back to the doctor, “being from Betazed, I specialize in rehabilitation Psychology; with my people, those who do not take well to their telepathic abilities sometimes need help in adjusting to life. Very much like someone who has been in a labor camp and needs help re-entering the society. I have also had my try with social psychology. But my favorite is the Psychology of Religion … you know … the functions of religion, development across a person’s life-span, religion and morality and the trophy,” John look at each of them before continuing, waiting for the response … “the association between religion and psychological well-being.” Their faces were a bit ashen and their eyes were somewhat glossed over. Waiting for it, John thought, “nah … I just like helping people.” Taking another sip of his drink. ;D
All of that was true, but he just wanted to show them that he could give back just as much as he could take … or they could dish out … ribbing from crew members was something that John saw as a hobby. Most people took councilors to seriously anyway … heck … most councilors took themselves to seriously. He just wanted to show them that he could poke fun too. John was off the clock and generally didn’t talk shop or take house calls off duty; it was his way of leaving work … at work.

"Rehabilitation psychology," S'reena repeated, almost stumbling over the long word, "well, looks like you'll have your work cut out for you then." This time, she cast a wan smile at the counselor; as soon as counselors started talking about their work she'd get nervous. She knew it would be a long time before she'd trust the new one, just as it had taken a very long time to feel comfortable around Yrdis. Right now, she actually missed the Ornaran, and she could tell the children missed him as well.
~I should write him~ she thought idly, gazing up at the new counselor again. "This crew has a tendency to get into trouble," she said earnestly, "and the first officer in particular I might add."
