Jared wandered into the bakery.
'Bonjour, tante Maria, je voudrais un pain au chocolat' he ordered, and then twigged that the Universal Translator would do him the favour of translating it and thus making it about as impressive as going fishing and only catching the worm you put on the hook. He looked around the interior of the bakery.
'Hello, cadets. What's happening? I'll trade some chocolate bread for some tips on the starbase.'

"Well, hello there. Would you like to join us? We were just discussing food. However I wouldn't mind a change in topics. I am always happy to help, but you don't need to trade anything for it. So what does a nice cadet dude like you do for fun?" She says chuckling and hushing Illito at the same time, knowing what it is like to be corrected for a rank mistake.

OOC; your rank under your name says cadet 4th class IC: Jared looked surprised for a moment. 'I do apologise, that's what comes of speaking without actually looking at people. I was inspecting my bread to make sure that the brown bits are actually chocolate. I lived for too long on my father's less than tidy starship. We once lost our entire meat stock when the cargo bay doors decided being closed wasn't their true vocation. To be honest, hunting on the nearest planet for anything edible improved the food quality. This led to my passtime being growing my own food quietly in my quarters. Still, enough about me, what's happening on planet starbase that's fun?'

"Oh not much going on here. A few other cadets will be camping soon in the holodeck. You can join them, or stay with us. Your choice. Don't worry about the rank. It is an honest mistake, and I even did that. Unfortunately when I did it, it was an admiral. I called her a captain. She didn't really care. I don't mind too much. Besides I am only a Lieutenant Junior Grade. You could be too at the end of your mission. It isn't too hard to earn." She says smiling.
OOC: I don't control what it says under my name. That would be the Personel Department I think. They can get behind sometimes.

'Even so, you earned it so it's important. Anyway, it's higher rank than I am. Sorry, I keep forgetting the 'sir'. I'm not used to it, my old captain was just 'father', the pilot was 'Jerry' and so on. What's your job in Starfleet, sir?'

"Relax, cadet. I am not on duty, so you can drop the 'sir' part. I am now a Science Instructor aboard the Hanson. I liked my training vessel so much, I decide to join the crew. What are you going to train in?" She says, then takes a bite of her bear claw finding out how wonderful it really is. She should contine to try new pastries, but only if she remember to exercise as well.

Jared coughed awkwardly. 'Well I was hoping to train as a science officer so there would be a nice way to start off a professional career. I used to do the science on Ambition you see, as well as the backup doctor. That was my father's starship. How did you come to Starfleet, if you don't mind me prying?'

She looked around for a moment and shifted in her chair.
"I see you like to pry. You had better watch out for that habit, as I have heard some don't much care for it. This was my birthday gift. I was allowed to come and try out starfleet. I didn't know for how long, and they restricted it to two weeks. I went over with my training mission, and was adopted only a short time ago." She says smiling, hoping this isn't boring Illito, as she already knows the facts and had been there for some of it.
"You are quiet, Illito, is there something wrong?" She says hoping her friend is okay.

'You have to say if I pry too much. Part of living in a close knit community means that you tend to forget others have a greater sense of privacy. Shipmates together and all that, it borders on creepy for some people.'
Jared had just thought that Illito was a bit shy or something, but now his eyes glazed over as he felt the same feeling of concern and started to feel disorientated. After a few seconds he recovered and took a bite of the snack which he realised he had been neglecting.

"Yes, well just be careful. You don't want to go overboard with it. I don't think we need to learn things that way, at least I don't plan on doing it that way. I hope that doesn't bother my cadet when the time comes."She says and shrugs eating more of her bear claw, and sipping on her now cold cider. She makes a face at the cold cider, and Maria sees it. She takes Joan's cider and warms it back up, and when returning it she shakes her head chuckling. Joan just smiles and thanks her. She returns to her kitchen.
"Another thing, you might want to be careful about rank. Many really don't like being called a cadet if they are a captain, or the like. Not that I mind, and I don't think Illito does too much, but I know others will, and I am just warning you." She says feeling more like an instructor by the minute.
"So, do you have any family?" She says hoping to get rid of the serious mood around the party, and wonders if she should do another handstand.

Jared still couldn't believe he mistook an officer for a cadet. It was just as well she was so understanding about it, it could have been a one way trip back to where he came from otherwise.
'I'll keep it in mind, thanks.'
He thought about his family that was now all but gone and wondered what exactly he should tell her. Too much would make him sound like the main character of a country song, but too little could end up with an awkward situation later, say at graduation when people wonder why his family aren't there. It was also a first for him to be asked this sort of thing. Previously everyone he had known had known his past and he had known theirs, not actually knowing was a new one on him.
'Well my whole family were basically adventurers on their ship the Ambition. My mother and twin brother died tragically a few years ago but my father and sister have gone to prospect for wealth in unexplored areas of the Gamma quadrant. It was a life of great freedom, but it didn't offer the type of inspiration a good Starfleet career can, as I'm sure you will have. I suppose they just preferred the challenge of exploration and new trading opportunities to the intellectual stimulation on a Federation ship.'
Jared hoped he sounded optimistic enough to fend off any possible worry that she could have over the tragedies. He also was hoping she wouldn't inquire too closely into what exactly his father did for the money; he wasn't sure if the truth would damage his career, but he didn't want to risk it.
But one thing had been niggling him since he realised who she was. He had to ask: 'So how comes you share a name with the station CO? Are you two related or is it just coincidence?'
His snack had still spectacularly failed to eat itself so he took another bite. It tasted odd since it had all the proper ingredients and was served by someone who actually knew how to make good food.

His story didn't take her off guard as it might some one else. She was used to death and losing loved one, as she had been through it. She realizes he has family still alive, so he doesn't know what it is like to loose a whole family as she does. She feels his pain, even though he isn't showing it, and realizes he might be over the grieving process. She doesn't show anything emotions wise on her face, as she just smiles and nods through the story.
"I understand loosing those you love. I was an orphan, so I went through it too. As for the CO being related to me, yes she is. She adopted me. We haven't really had time to talk or be together since then though. Duty calls, and oh well we will have time for family stuff later. You might see her around, don't worry though her bark is worse than her bite. Well if she has a bark." Joan says chuckling hoping not to scare the cadet. She smiles and finishes off her pastry and drink.

Jared considered this. Since she was a human, to her orphan would mean both parents, not just the father as he was aware some paternal societies thought of it. He wondered if she knew they were dead or if there was a chance of their return, but he didn't ask more since old wounds were best left. Her apparent unreaction suggested to him that she was happy with what he had told her, although he doubted she knew he would probably never see his father or sister again. Still, he was here to make a new life and he should concentrate on the future, not the past.
'Oh good, a non-biting CO. Means I don't need a tetanus boost this year. Would either of you you like some chocolat pain? It's very nice and it's made by French people instead of bears.'
Jared tore some off and offered it to them, wonderig if this would be seen as normal behaviour. He knew adapting away from nomadic life would be hard since he had known people tended to be more distant from each other in static life, but he hadn't expected it to be such a hard habit to break.

The look on his face meant he was thinking something, but decided not to ask him about it, as it could be something personal.
"Oh good, a non-biting CO. Means I don't need a tetanus boost this year. Would either of you you like some chocolat pain? It's very nice and it's made by French people instead of bears." He says tearing some off and offering it to us.
"Oh we better watch out, Illito, we have a commedian here. As for the bread, I wouldn't mind tasting some. I am always open to new things." She says taking the small piece from him. She puts it in her mouth not sure what to expect. At first it is different, and like nothing she has tasted before, but all new things are like that, as she has yet to experience most of life. She chews the bread slowly trying to get an opinion of it. After she finishes she finds she likes it.
"Thanks, that was good. Is there anything you want to know about starfleet?" She says hoping to help him answer any questions she might have the answer to.

Matt had gone back to his room to take a shower and change his uniform. For some reason he felt extremely hungry. He then asked someone in his dorm if they new any good places to eat.
"Theres a good bakery down the street," the cadet said.
"Thanks," Matt replied.
As he was walking to the backery he could hear some laughing coming from inside. As he looked inside he was glad to see Joan and Illito were there. They were talking to another cadet.
"Hey do you mind if I join you?" Matt asked.
"No of course not," Joan said.
"Well first I have to order something don't I," Matt smiled at them. As he went to the counter an urge for kolaches came over him. Kolaches at this time of the day. Yeah wierd the thought, but when he ordered them the clerk did not say anything.
"Hey Matt I like to introduce to you Reman Jared, Reman this is Matt," Joan smiled
"Hey Reman," Matt said.
"Hello, Matt," Reman smiled back.
"What were you talking about?" Matt asked as he took a bite of his kolache.
Off: Hello Reman nice to meet you.

Illito listened as Reman and Joan talked. She decided that although she could talk, she would rather just listen for a while. After all, the other two seemed to have enough to talk about without her scintillating remarks. What is your favorite food! What had she been thinking? Obviously nothing much.
"Oh we better watch out, Illito, we have a commedian here," Joan remarked.
Illito smiled slightly at Joan, refusing to be drawn into the conversation yet. After all, she still hadn't really thought of anything to say. What could she really add to a conversation about the past? At least, Illito didn't see that she could really add anything interesting.
Illito accepted the bread, and found it...very unbreadlike. It was, after all, quite chocolaty.
She finally had decided to talk again, thinking that she might have something to say that would add to the conversation, but another Matt walked in and joined them.
"What were you talking about?" Matt asked.
Illito wasn't sure how much she could summarize, given the fact that she hadn't actually participated in the conversation, so she left that to someone else.
OOC: Wow, you guys wrote a lot. Took a long time to read it all.

"Welcome, Matt, to our little group. As for the conversation, we have basically been talking about food and our pasts. We could always start a new topic though, if no one is comfortable with these. I personally don't care what we talk about. If you two new cadets have any questions, please feel free to ask. Illito and I both have graduated now. I can't speak for her, but I will do my best to answer any questions given." Joan says as Matt pulls up a chair. He orders some kinda of food she has never seen before, and smiles.
"Illito, you being quiet is a little unnerving, is something wrong? I know you a little, and I bet it is the topic." She says not used to the woman being quiet at all. Joan gives her one of those hundred watt smiles, and tries not to laugh in the process.

"Joan, its a kolache. You know has some meat and cheese inside," Matt smiled at the Lt. "I just had some craving for it you know. Are any of you good in quantum physics? It's my hardest class, and I need some help."

"Illito, you being quiet is a little unnerving, is something wrong? I know you a little, and I bet it is the topic." Joan smiled at her.
Illito looked at Joan, and shrugged. "Nothing's wrong. But at least I can still do something to unnerve you. Although I do admit that it is not nearly as good as doing a handstand in the middle of the promenade, or sending a Cadet to call the Captain by his first name." Illito smiled at Matt. "Which he handled very well. In truth, though, I was just listening. And thinking," Illito added quietly.
"Are any of you good in quantum physics? It's my hardest class, and I need some help," Matt asked.

"You certainly did surprise everyone," Illito agreed. "At least, I would hope that you surprised them. I would be a little worried if they expected you to join the Maquis," Illito joked.
Illito turned to Matt. "I'm sorry, I'm not any good at Quantum Physics. Fortunately I doubt I will need to handle situations that involve it too much. I'm a doctor," Illito explained. "So I'm sorry, but I probably know the least out of anyone at this table."

"I sincerely doubt that lieutenant," S'reena said, as she approached the table, a backpack slung on her back and holding a small child at one hand, another child on her arm. "I am a scientist, and I don't know much about quantum physics either. In fact, it is somewhat the only subject I failed in the academy."
Yarna cooed at Illito and Joan, holding out her little hands to the Cardassian doctor. S'reena obliged and handed the infant to the doctor. She then sat down in the nearest available chair, hung her pack over the backrest and pulled Kahlan onto her lap.
"So....tell us about Quantum Physics mister," the Romulan first officer coaxed the cadet, "what've you learned so far?"

"Well first off it has turned out to be my favorite class, so far," Matt began. This came to a surprise to the officer's especially S'reena, but she was biased thought Matt. "Commander William Ford teaches the class and he lets everyone give his or her opinion. We started with the basics like energy E of the basic quantum is directly proportional to the frequency ƒË of the oscillator, or E = h ƒË, where h is a constant, now called Planck's constant, having the value 6.63~10 or how quantum theory holds only probability, not absolutes, rules any physical system. Quantum theory also holds that things can materialize out of the vacuum, although they tend to vanish back into it. This principle led to the experimentation with particle physics which led to modern technoligies such as warp drive , medical scans , sheilding and matter transporters." Matt had realized that he couldn't stop talking about the subject and he blushed with embarresment.
"Oh its okay Cadet, I know the feeling," Commander S'reena smiled at him.
"Oh and we also talked about the ethics of quantum physics," Matt said.
"Ethics," Illto said.
"Yes, because this particular science has a great potenial for greatness, but also an equally potenial for destruction. If we can control quantum physics, we will be able to make weapons that can destroy entire civilizations," Matt said.
"Well I never thought about it like that," Illtio said.

"Well I do try to stand out." She said smiling and shaking her head at what Illito said.
Commander Hope came with her daughters and joined the group. She smiles when the youngest recognizes her. It isn't long before Matt is talking about his physics class.
"Well if I think about joining that class,I won't have too much trouble catching up." She says smiling at Matt.
"So what is our next adventure. It might just be you and me, Illito, as these cadets might want to go camping." She says noticing S'reena's backpack for the first time.

"I guess it's up to you," Illito decided. "After all, my way to attract attention is to stay quiet. It doesn't work very well."
Joan shook her head. "No," she replied. "It's your turn to cause trouble."
"Fine," Illito decided, then racked her brain for a plan. "We could go a little longer without actually making trouble. We could just have a little fun. We could go to a holoprogram like the one you showed me before we left, The Secret Garden. Something else with plants?" Illito suggested. She tickled Yarna, who let out a surprised giggle.

OOC: Yey me, I remembered to log in this time ... IC: E'Liana wandered around the Promenade, looking for something to eat that wasn't Klingon - not that she didn't like Klingon food but there's only so much Gagh a half-human stomach can take before it protests. Spying the bakery, she made her way there, glad that there was such a thing as the universal translator, the signs were all in French. "What would you like?" 'Anything' She thought, rather hungry... "Um...something where the chocolate ratio is higher than average?" She said, flashing a smile. She was her mother's daughter alright. Leaving the bakery with her pain au chocolat and a hot chocolate (why only go half-way? ;-), E'Liana noticed a group of Starfleet personnel. Were they laughing? 'That's odd...' She decided to hover around, hoping that someone would notice her when she saw a Cardassian. Whilst trying not to openly stare at her, she noticed the irony of a half Klingon in a Starfleet uniform staring at a Cardassian in the same atire. She suddenly felt very bad. Her face reddened slightly ('Damn my human side') she turned to walk away but - "Are you new here?" A cadet was addressing her, 'should I ignore it? That would seem rude...' "I'd speak in Klingon too, but the translator would render that pointless...." She turned suddenly. "Why would you need to speak in Klingon to me? I can speak more than one language you know..." "..." The cadet looked mildly surprised. "Um...sorry? Didn't mean to offend. I'm Reman Jared. And you are...?" She sighed inwardly, surprised at her own abilty to mess things up before they had even begun. "I'm E'Liana BeTor. I'm also sorry. A bit nervous about all this you see..." She half smiled, hoping that he wouldn't think she was too strange. "Well you're in the right place!" He smiled and led her to the group, still talking. "So you like chcocolate..?"
