Jared could understand her feeling of nervousness. After all, they were both probably from radically different communities to the norm, but like love and death, chocolate unites all so they had at least three things to link them already. As for first impressions, they weren't reliable so he didn't bother with them. After all, he had managed to call Lt McCormick 'cadet' so best just to be reassuring.
"Well you're in the right place!" He smiled and led her to the group, still talking. "So you like chcocolate? Maybe we could form a club."
He stopped just short of the table, thinking. 'I've heard your name before, I remember because it sounds like my mother's name, Alyanna. Have we met before on Qo'noS?'

E'Liana thought for a moment but then shook her head.
"I'm not sure, I met a lot of my mother's friends in various places around the Quadrant. If you know me then you would probably have seen me with my family...my mother is a dark-haired fair skinned human, my dad is a big scary Klingon guy, I have a half-sister who has red hair and an attitude problem and a full Klingon half-brother who wants to open a resturant on Bajor...ring any bells?"
"Does your dad have a ship?"
"Yes...well, he did. Then he managed to get it blown up a few months ago due to a Borg attack. He had to kill 2 of his own men before they were assimilated. Perhaps my father did business with yours...if so, then I apologise...he's not exactly what you'd call a 'legitimate businessman'." E'Liana laughed. "Although, to be honest, I don't remember him trading with humans - he would have told my mum if he had - he usually delt with anyone who didn't work through...um... official channels."
"Well...to tell the truth, neither does my father. He's always preferred more 'efficient' methods for making some Latinum."
E'Liana smiled, thinking. "I remember a few years ago when I was with my father on his ship for some training that we met a man and his son. If I remember correctly, the son was about your age. It could've been you...?"
"Perhaps. I'll check with my father."
"Oh, no! The man was a Betazoid. I remember now, because my father didn't like them much as he doesn't like the idea of people knowing what he's thinking. But you never know, we could've met before. Anyway, aren't you going to introduce me to these nice people?" She smiled nervously at the group who were now watching the pair with suspicion as it had taken them an awful long time to get to the table...

Illito told Joan her suggestion for what to do next, and was waiting for Joan’s response when she noticed someone appeared to be staring at her, yet embarrassed because of it. Illito smiled slightly, she got a lot of stares. Illito watched the Cadet out of the corner of her eye. Briefly considering going up and introducing herself, Illito was relieved when Jared chose to do it instead.
The two talked for a while, and then started to head towards the table. Then they continued to head toward the table. Then they stopped a little way away from the table and talked some more. Then they finally reached the table. “Anyway, aren't you going to introduce me to these nice people?” asked the new Cadet.
“I’m Lieutenant Illito Tintagel,” Illito offered. “Just graduated from the Hanson.”

Jared thought about this for a moment.
'Ah yes!' he exclaimed, a bit too loudly and lowered his voice as other patrons looked at him. 'I remember him, he was unusually hard to read anyway since he was generally thinking about five different things. I am a Betazoid though, but my talents became latent a few years ago so I find it's generally easier to wear contacts so people take me for human.'
Jared looked away for a moment, remembering something. Then he looked back.
'Anyway, you better come and meet the people. These are Lt. Joan McCormick, Dr Illito Tintagel, cadet like us Matt Reynolds and Commander... I'm sorry I missed your name.'
And the names of the minature people you seem to be carrying around like two bags of bubbly squeaks, he thought.
'S'reena' she replied.
'Commander S'reena' Jared repeated to E'liana, rather needlessly.
'People, this is E'Liana BeTor, who also likes chocolate bread'

S'reena wrinkled her nose at the mention of chocolate. "You actually like that brown stuff?" she asked, motioning for the two cadets to please take a seat. She just managed to restrain Kahlan on her lap because the toddler was just about to clamber off and grease the spotless uniforms of the newcomers with her sticky hands.
Quickly, she reached for a nappy and wiped her daughter's hands clean with it. Next, she reached for her tea and Tompouce. "I actually like these more. It's pastry with custard between it and a pink iced topping. As you see, you get very sticky hands from them if you're not careful."
S'reena grimaced as Kahlan again tried to get away, however now that the child's hands were clean, she let her go. "Don't go too far Kahlan," she warned, then turned to Illito. "Yarna quite dotes on you," she smiled.
Then she returned her attention to the newcomers. "And what would you both be training in?" she asked, regarding them with interest. The young woman obviously was part Klingon, but the young man appeared to be human. However, she knew first hand that appearances didn't have to be what they seemed.

Jared watched the little one run off to try to cause maximum trouble whilst still maintaining an air of innocence and thought of how children from all races are alike.
'I'm hoping to cadet into Science Officer and E'Liana is probably going to be a chocolate or something.' Jared replied
'Mudical offifer' she spluttered through some chocolate bread.
'Ah, a mudical offifer' he imitated. 'By the way, your child is trying to remove the contents of that table, Commander.'

“You actually like that brown stuff?” S’reena asked. “I actually like these more. It's pastry with custard between it and a pink iced topping. As you see, you get very sticky hands from them if you're not careful.”
Illito glanced at the pastry disdainfully. If she had to choose between the two, she would choose chocolate, but only if it had a high concentration of cocoa.
“Don't go too far Kahlan,” S’reena warned, then turned to Illito. “Yarna quite dotes on you.”
Illito nodded slowly at S’reena, the words meaning a lot to her. Looking at Yarna, Illito thought that of all the things she had learned on the Hanson, the way that young children forgave so easily might be one of the most important.
“And what would you both be training in?” S’reena asked the Cadets.
“I'm hoping to cadet into Science Officer and E'Liana is probably going to be a chocolate or something.” Jared replied. Illito glanced at Jared, not finding his remark very funny at all.
“Mudical offifer” E’liana replied.
“Ah, a mudical offifer” Jared imitated. Illito felt sorry for E’Liana.
“I just finished training for medical,” Illito said, trying to put the part-klingon Cadet at ease. “On the Hanson, but I assume you will be going on the Hepta.”

... “I just finished training for medical,” Illito said, trying to put the part-klingon Cadet at ease. “On the Hanson, but I assume you will be going on the Hepta.”
"I've no idea where I'm going at the moment, I don't really mind, I just want to get out there!" Replied E'Liana, thankful for the diversion from her sloppy table manners - her mother would have killed her!
Turning to Reman Jared, she quirked her eyebrow and said "You do realise the danger of humiliating a part-klingon, right? Because I can assure you that with my medical training I can make anything I do look like an unfortunate accident...." She stared at him long enough to make him slightly ill at ease and then turned back to Illito, belatedly winking at her, as if to reassure the Cardassian that she was joking.
"I'm following my mum's footsteps in regards to medicine - she was a Doctor too, although not always for Starfleet. I may go to Qo'nos at some point and try to do something for Klingon medicine - Klingon's knowledge of their own needs is notoriously ill-informed. We do tend to view many important professions as 'dishonourable' due to their lack of bloodshed..."
E'Liana noticed a small blur whiz past her knee follwed by a cry. A rather small person had banged into the next table. "Well hello there" She said to the crying child. "Would you like some chocolate?"
The child was silenced immediately at the mention of the medicine known as "Chocolate" and E'Liana handed over what was left of her chocolate bread (Ie: the chocolate) and saw the child break into a grin and managed a rather shy "Thank you..." and ran away to mummy.
Looking at the two children, she said "Aren't they cute?"
OOC: I'll let you decide if I'm joking about the "accident" or not ;-)

S'reena frowned as her daughter wasn't looking where she was going, and held on to the table cloth when she banged into the next table. Fortunately, the new medical cadet was fast to reassure the girl. "Funny," S'reena remarked as she made sure that Kahlan didn't grease any more clothing with her now chocolate stained hands, "neither Michael nor myself like chocolate, yet Kahlan seems to love it."
She reached for another part of chocolate bread. "May I?" she enquired, then handed a small part to Yarna, who started sucking on it, then tossed it away with a sour look on her face. S'reena smiled brightly. "Why am I not surprised," she murmured. She reached for her tea and sipped it thoughtfully.
"Klingon medicine?" she finally enquired, then exchanged a glance with Illito and Joan. "The captain of the Hanson is part Klingon, Doctor Black would be very glad to have a trainee with knowledge of Klingon medicine. But alas, the Hepta will be setting out soon, and I doubt any of you would wait for the Hanson to set sail again. Any change of knowing anything about Romulans?" she finally asked carefully. She knew that not many Klingons liked the mention of Romulans, let alone be close to one or even befriended to one.
With a little shame, she recalled her first reaction on captain Marcells presence on the Hanson bridge, and his reaction to her own presence. They'd gotten off on the wrong foot, but eventually began trusting one another, and even befriending one another. Though trust and friendship was at a rather low point at present, loyalty played a large factor in their working relationship, and so far, loyalty still stood pretty high in the regard of one another.

Jared had noticed already how much like her father E'Liana was. Had she not followed her mother's footsteps then he was sure that she would have been as sucessful as her father had been as a venturer. In some ways she was deadlier since she hid the might of her father behind a screen of vulnerability. He wondered how her father was doing now, he'd have to ask at a future date. Certainly Jared's father would want to invite hers along on his way to the Gamma quadrant if he was still in the business. He wondered how far she considered herself to be Klingon, if it was just a passing comment or if she yearned for full Klingon blood. It seemed odd to him, people never seemed happy with who they were, but the amount of half-bloods and displaced people he had met they seemed perfectly normal to him. Maybe if people could forget where they were from and concentrate on where they are then they would be a lot happier. But then he didn't really understand the attachment to a homeworld, since he had never had one. Maybe it was a bigger part of you than he thought it should be. Still, both of these two seemed rather progressive. E'Liana wanted to educate Qo'noS in the things they lacked and that was an admirable goal and Commander Hope seemed as much at home amongst humans as she would have been with Romulans. He wondered how much the two would take to each other since he had seen a full Klingon and an ex Tal Shia agent become good friends. He tried to remember if the Klingon had been E'Liana's father or not, it was really hard to remember that much about him but it was unlikely that it was, there are after all more than two Klingons in the whole universe.

"I don't know much about Romulan medicine, I'm afraid" E'Liana smiled at her reassuringly. "But that's merely because I didn't have the chance to study it. I know a little about Vulcans, of course, it comes with the training, so some of that logically - if you'll excuse the pun... - attributes itself to Romulans as well." She looked at her companions, noting the surprise on their faces.
"I see you're all a little surprised that I didn't try to 'rip S'Reena's heart out and eat it raw'?" She laughed lightly as she said this. "I was taught by my parents not to judge people merely by what race they are, or any other characteristic. I myself am both Human and Klingon, so what that means I don't know. Humans have a strained relationship Romulans in general, whilst Klingons, for the most part, hate them. Which am I to choose? I decided long ago not to think what people believe I ought to, but to base my opinions on each person as an individual...at least, thats what i TRY to do. It doesn't always work."
There were murmors of agreement from around the table, and E'Liana suddenly felt very self-conscious as she had been speaking for quite a while.
She sat thinking for a moment about the Captain of the Hanson. Part Klingon? Interesting...I didn't realise there were more of 'us' here...
OOC: I just thought of something incredibly profound and intelligent to say, but I can't remember it! I'll have to add it in when I do, so apologies if it doesn't link to anything else we talk about! :-D

Jared nodded along to the last part of E'Liana's speech. He only wished more people would think first and judge second.
'That's a good philosophy. If Medical Officer doesn't work out for you then maybe you could be the ship's counselor.'
He looked around the bakery and as much of the promenade as was visible from his seat.
'It's funny' he commented 'people aren't so different around the galaxy. Everyone wants to be happy and feel accepted. Vulcans talk of logic but they wouldn't be so fast on that if no other Vulcan thought like that. Klingons fight because their brethren fight. And Starfleet gives the type of acceptance that anyone can take part it, no matter where they're from. It's both very different from my old life and not so different at all.'
He wondered if what he had said made much sense. Probably the commander at least had heard this said so many times before anyway that she'd know what he meant. Ah well, cliche or not, it was said now.

Turning to Reman Jared, E'Liana quirked her eyebrow and said “You do realise the danger of humiliating a part-klingon, right? Because I can assure you that with my medical training I can make anything I do look like an unfortunate accident....” she said then turned back to Illito, winking at her.
Illito raised an eyebrow. “I’m not sure about that,” she replied lightly. “After all, you’ve threatened him in the presence of quite a few people. I would suggest that next time you do it where there aren’t so many witnesses.” Illito was fairly certain that E’Liana was joking, but Illito was giving fairly useful advice.
“Klingon medicine?” S’reena asked. Illito glanced at Joan, thinking that might come in use for Captain Marcell. Illito listened as E’Liana answered S’reena’s question about her knowledge of Romulan medicine. Illito wasn’t very surprised that E’Liana didn’t try to ‘rip S'Reena's heart out and eat it raw.’ For one, it seemed like a barbaric way to dispose of someone. Besides, if E’Liana reacted that strongly to differences of species, she probably would have been a good deal more hostile towards Illito.
There were murmors of agreement from a lot of the rest of the table as to what E’Liana said about accepting people no matter their race. Illito smiled wryly. Given the fact that everyone seemed to agree with what E’Liana had said, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem being accepted as a Cardassian. And so far there hadn’t been, so evidently these were people who lived by their words. Interesting.
“It's funny” Jared commented “people aren't so different around the galaxy. Everyone wants to be happy and feel accepted. And Starfleet gives the type of acceptance that anyone can take part it, no matter where they're from. It's both very different from my old life and not so different at all.”
“I’m not quite sure about that,” Illito disagreed, thinking about what he had said. “I certainly didn’t come here expecting or looking for acceptance. If I have found it, it may be a good thing, but I wasn’t seeking it. I didn’t join Starfleet because of it. There’s a strength in being different, in being unaccepted and knowing that nothing you do will make you be accepted.”

Jared bridled at Illito's disagreement, he didn't feel that she has quite understood, but then he had been rather vague.
'I didn't say that everyone was looking for acceptance in Starfleet, just that they could find it if they wished. And while, yes, there is strength in being different, people should be able to accept differences as much as they accept similarities. If we were all the same then life would be rather boring, but we can still find common ground. Not being able to find that ground in my opinion suggests a rather xenophobic outlook.'
He considered this for a minute, it didn't quite seem to fit with the bakery.
'Anyway, do you have children? You look a bit young but seem to take well to the little'un you have there.'

Jared bridled at Illito's disagreement, which she found very inexplicable. How could he say something that he wasn’t prepared to defend? “I didn't say that everyone was looking for acceptance in Starfleet, just that they could find it if they wished. And while, yes, there is strength in being different, people should be able to accept differences as much as they accept similarities. If we were all the same then life would be rather boring, but we can still find common ground. Not being able to find that ground in my opinion suggests a rather xenophobic outlook.”
Not giving her any chance to respond, which seemed rather contrary to a good argument, Jared changed teh subject. “Anyway, do you have children?” he asked. “You look a bit young but seem to take well to the little'un you have there.”
“No, I don’t have any children,” Illito replied, giving no sign that she had almost burst out laughing. At least, no sign beyond a vague smile. “And I haven’t the slightest clue why Yarna likes me. It’s quite a complement though, and it’s one that I’m willing to accept.” Illito was still smiling from the idea of her having children. She couldn’t see her with young ones always following her, even if they were Cardassian young ones they would still get into trouble.

Didn't they see that at there little table where a Klingon, Cardassian, and a Romulan. Of course there was diversity in Starfleet, there are over 150 member planets in the Federation. Matt had been quite for the longest time and now he felt that it was his time to give an opinion, but was distracted by the Commander's baby. The baby was so cute to Matt's eyes, he loved children, except cleaning them of course. Commander S'reena saw this and asked him,
"Do you what to hold her?" Commander S'reena asked.
"Really, sure of course," Matt said. The commander then gave her bundle of joy to Matt. Matt was happy that he could do this since he hadn't had a baby in his arms for a long time. "You are so cute aren't you." Matt told the baby.
"Illito I bet you would be a great mother," Commander S'reena told her.
"Thank you ma'am, but for now I will focus on my career," Illto responded and everyone started to laugh at that response.

Joan smiles at hearing the argument.
"Well I certainly don't think anyone would accept my behavior lately. I have been goofing off a little. Okay, maybe a lot. Still I think there are stereotypes for everyone. I don't like them, especially mine, and we can do something about that. I plan to change what people think of me, I can be fun, but I can also be serious when needed. At least that is the message I hope to send, and I don't think Matt much liked my silly side. I can always try to show people who I really am, but it is really up to them to decide what they think. Besides I don't need anyone's approval or acceptance of who I am. I never needed that, and it shouldn't stop anyone else either. I AM different no matter what. The events of my past lead to me being different. I don't really care. They can like me or hate me. Just as long as they take me as I am." She says happy to finally say that. She realizes the whole group is looking at her a little strange. She just shrugs it off and looks to see what the little ones are doing.

"I quite agree," S'reena cut in, as Illito handed Yarna to Matt Reynolds, "I believe that people should not try to become someone other people would accept, but rather remain true to one's heritage and beliefs and hope that someone will just accept a person who he or she is."
She paused a long moment. "When I was young, my parents had a tough time getting accepted because of who they are. Yet, they remained true to their Romulan heritage and managed to make a home for themselves amongst humans. They gained respect from people because of who they were and fought to remain to be. They have taught my brother and myself the same, an he's had it twice as tough as me. I was born on Earth, but he was born in the Empire, yet he always stood up for me when needed while facing his own troubles."
She smiled at her children, and her companions. "I was lucky," she admitted, "and my parents were very glad when I married Michael. At first, of course they didn't approve of a human for son-in-law, but they accepted him when they got to know him. I always find myself subjected to prejudice because the first thing people see is "Romulan" before the see beyond that and see who I really am. A perfect example is my friendship with Captain Tony Marcell, a part Klingon."
She locked gazes with E'Liana BeTor. "No, I did not expect you to jump and tear my heart out just because you are part Klingon, and me full Romulan," she admitted, "the thought crossed my mind, but I didn't expect it. This is what I mean with prejudice, people are expected to do something because it had been the norm for years, but when the norm changes, they are surprised by it. I find it encouraging to see more different species working together, regardless of heritage, and respecting one another just as a person, and not because of their species. I believe this is what Starfleet is about."
She casually gestured at the people before her. "Just look at us," she commented, "there used to be a day when Klingons and humans and romulans would not sit at one table, talking. A day when Cardassians were shunned just because they are Cardassian. And yet here we are, a couple of humans, a Betazoid, a Romulan, a Klingon and a Cardassian just chatting and having fun. You'll have to agree that this is more entertaining than aiming phasers at one another." She chuckled. "Unless of course we'd be engaged in a tactical exercise on the holodeck."

Hearing S'reena talk like that, she finds it strange. She wonders if she should do her homework on Starfleet for next time, so she isn't taken by surprise.
"Wow, sounds like Starfleet was on shaky ground before. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do, if I am to be a good instructor. The atmosphere in here just became to serious. We need something. Since our little party seems to be growing, I suggest we grab the surrounding tables, so other cadets can join us if they want to. Our table is a little full. We could push them all together. That might help. So tell us something about yourselves, just a little something like what you like to do for fun, or something like that. You never know who you will serve with, and I would like to know a little about the ones who are possibilites. Hold that thought though, as I want to make sure it is okay to move the tables." Joan says changing the subject so it isn't as serious, and leaving the group to go and talk to Maria. She returns quickly.
"She says its alright to do so, but we must put them back when we leave. She doesn't mind, and says the more company the better," Joan says chuckling. "Now about yourselves. I already know a little about Illito and S'reena, so if you two want you can say something, or not." She says turning to the cadets, then to the two women, and back to the cadets. She hopes this doesn't sound like an order, as she isn't ordering anyone to do anything, but simply requesting.

After pointing the new cadet in the direction of the bakery, Q2 had decided that he wouldn't mind one of Maria's famous eclair's either. He smiled as he saw the large group of cadets sat around the table, and once he had bought an eclair, he grabbed a seat and pulled it up to the table.
He had heard the question that Joan had asked while he was purchasing his eclair, and he leant forwards.
"If I may field the question first?" When noone objected, he continued. "Mostly, the things I like to do overlap a lot with what I actually have to do with starfleet. Although I have been stuck on this starbase for much longer than I would have liked, I am by no means a starbase officer. Indeed, as you may have noticed from my uniform, I serve in the marine corps. My hobbies are all adventure sports, kayaking, climbing, hiking, that kind of thing. So, although I originally signed up as otherwise, I sought a transfer to the marines, and now I get to do a lot of those hobbies as part of my job. It's great fun, and there is the sense that you are doing something that not many other people can do. You see, within the marines, there is a lot more specialisation than in starfleet proper. There are probably only two or three other people in the whole of the marines who can do what I do, and I doubt any of them hold my rank."
He paused to take a bite from his eclair, and realised he had spoken for longer than he had meant to. With his hand, he motioned for someone else to take over from him.

A high-ranking Marine joined them and answered Joan’s question. When he had done, Illito sighed reluctantly. “I have to go, report to my ship, the Scavenger,” she said. “It has been great talking to you all, meeting you, talking to the people I already knew.” Illito smiled at Joan, S’reena, and the Commander’s daughters.
“Keep in touch, okay?” Illito asked Joan quietly before leaving. “And don’t join the Maquis again. Please.” Illito smiled slightly, to show that she didn’t really think it was a possibility.
OOC: It has been great talking to you guys.

Seeing a new member, she isn't sure if she should stand at attention or not. She ops not to since they both are off duty, and this is a relaxed setting. She hopes she made the right choice. She notices Illito is sad, and starts to wonder why, but doesn't have to wait long.
"I have to go report to my ship, the Scavenger," she says. "It has been great talking to you all, meeting you, talking to hte people I already knew." Illito says looking over at her, the commander, and the commander's daughters. Illito had been one of Joan's only friends, and she wondered exactly what would happen now.
"Keep in touch, okay?" Illito asked her in a hushed tone before leaving. "And don't join the Maquis again. Please." Illito says smiling slighty, before Joan could say anything. She shakes her head and laughs.
"Well that would be something wouldn't it? I don't think I like the Maquis that much, and besides I can get into enough trouble without being one of them. Not to mention my new mom would't like that. Don't worry though, I plan to keep in touch with you. Next time you are on shore leave send me a message, and I will try to come and see you, if I am not on a mission at the time." She says sad to see a friend leaving, but she knew it would happen some day, as they all had to head to their various posts.
"Just don't be too much trouble. I hear they don't like that on the Scavenger." Joan says hoping to get the last word in.

“Have you been playing long? If you would like you can come and join us in the bakery. I know we have a large group, but the more the merrier. Besides if I am right you are going to get to know those cadets anyways. That happens on a training mission. I hope you will come and join us.” The instructor, Lt. McCormick, hoping to make another new friend.
“Thanks for the complement,” Kedzie answered, following the instructor. “I’ve been playing most of my life, but not the flute. I just picked that up on a lunar colony. I’m Shikako Kedzie,” she said, introducing herself to the group of tables that the instructor led her to. The other woman hadn’t been kidding, there were a lot of people. Kedzie hoped that she could remember all of their names.

The small group of three had now become the main attraction in the backery. As people came in the first thing they saw was a bunch of cadet's with some officers talking like there was no tomorrow. Matt was still glad that he had Yarna, this way he could for go all the talking and just pay attention to the conversation. Matt saw that Yarna was starting to fall asleep, so he sang her a little lullybuy hoping no one would hear him except the little bundle of joy in his arms.

Kedzie took a seat at one of the tables, and decided to give a little background on who she was. “I’m not in Starfleet, I’m a musician, but I will be going on the training mission with most of you. I was born on Bajor. You can call me Kedzie.”
She finished her brief summary, hoping that would prompt others to say a little about themselves, since she didn’t know anyone here. Looking around the table, she saw a young child in the arms of one of the Cadets. The child was at least part Romulan, or Vulcan, and the Cadet obviously wasn’t. Besides, he wasn’t treating her the way parents treat their own children. He was more mesmerized by her than Kedzie would think would be normal for a parent. Kedzie glanced around the table, and saw the person she would guess the child, belonged to, a Romulan Commander. The Commander also held a child who was a little older. Kedzie smiled at the older of the two girls, the one that was held by the Commander.
