Nicole sat at a table drinking a raktajino for the first time. She was just relaxing after a hard day at the Academy and was new so she was wanting to make some friends. After sitting for about a half an hour she heard someone walking toward her table...

Jason walked down the Promenade, deciding on what he was in the mood for today. He approached Heather on the Hill, but began to pass it by. The cowboy wasnt that interested in Gaelic culture today.
But he stopped as something caught his eye. A lone female cadet, sitting by herself at a table. He quickly changed his mind about the restaurant, and went inside.
Sally Meriweather smiled from behind the bar. "Well Doctor, I don't see you here often. What can I get you?"
"Make it a blend of herbal tea. Surprise me," he said as he walked past.
He approached the lone cadet. "Greetings, I'm Doctor Jason Black, Chief Medical Officer of the Hanson. May I join you?"

ooc: going from Noah's last post on "Home again" to Jason's last response on this thread. Hope ya don't mind me joining ya cadet;)
S'reena merely smiled. If Kahlan wanted to call the chief engineer uncle, then it was her choice. "I think you've deserved it," she told the surprised chief, "and she doesn't call everyone uncle or aunt, just people she trusts." She watched as Kahlan made herself comfortable on his lap and smiled to herself, as she held on to her youngest child. In a month, the little girl would not be able to do it anymore, and she would have to start pulling out her maternity uniforms again.
Sighing heavily, she keyed the controlson the hoverchair and turned to leave sickbay. "Commander, do please have her home by dinner would you?" she called over her shoulder, "I'm going to try a new place for lunch in an hour, after I get something more comfortable to wear. I'm on leave, I don't know what I'm doing, wearing a uniform, honestly!"
The hoverchair hummed softly as it glided out of sickbay, and S'reena steered it (without hitting a wall once) to her own quarters and changed into something more comfortable. Wearing a jogging shirt and pants, and trainers, she finally found her way to "Heather on the Hill" an establishment she'd never been before, but had wanted to try out for quite some time now. To her surprise, the CMO had found this place also, and seemed just to have asked a young cadet if he could join her.
"Doctor, Cadet," she said jovially, as she clutched Yarna to her while maneuvring the chair into place with one hand. "you two don't mind if I join you, do you?" she querried, hoping she wasn't interrupting anything. She frowned, as the chair didn't quite fit. "A hand please?" she enquired, releasing controls of the hoverchair, allowing for manual maneuvring.

No, I'd be honored. I'm Cadet Soaringstar and new to the Academy," she replied in a calm welcoming voice, gesturing them to join her.
Nicole appearance was typical of a Klingon/Human hybrid; long black hair, a very beautiful crest, tall strong body frame, but the strangest feature in her appearace is her eyes. They are bright blue, very rare coming from a Cherokee father and a Klingon mother.

"A hand please?" S'reena asked, obviously needing help fitting into the available space.
"Certainly Commander," Jason said, coming over quickly to help her. He handled the chair with care, as it was easy to exert too hard on the effectively weightless chair and send S'reena flying across the room, or more likely, crashing into the table.
"No, I'd be honored. I'm Cadet Soaringstar and new to the Academy," Nicole replied, as she gestured for them to join her.
Jason finished moving S'reena's chair into place, then plopped down in one himself. "Welcome to the Academy, Cadet. This is Commander S'reena Hope, First Officer of the Hanson. So what are you going to be training in?" he asked Soaringstar
Sally then brought over his tea, placing it down in front of him. He picked it up, sipping it. "Whoo! Spicy," Jason said, and took another sip. "Very nice. Thanks Sally. Either of you want anything?" he said to his female companions. "It's on me."

"Thank you, but no," she said courteously, "I'm training to be a security officer and hopefully, someday, I'll recieve my own command." After that, she took another sip of her raktajino and looked at the Commander and Doctor in turn, " You mentioned earlier that you both serve aboard the Hanson? What's it like?" she asked inquisitively, truely wanting to know what to expect when she got assigned to a training vessel.

"The Hanson is a magnificient ship," Jason replied, proud of the vessel. "A state of the art Intrepid class. But then, what makes a good ship is as much about the crew as it is the vessel itself. We're an eccentric bunch, to say the least. We've got a First Officer that finds herself in the Brig on a regular basis," Jason said eyeing Commander Hope.
"Then theres the fact that the Chief Medical Officer is a cowboy, and because of his heritage will just as fast reach for a band-aid for a bruise as he would a dermal regenerator. The last Commanding Officer defected to the Maquis for a short time. Our Chief Engineer is permanently confined to a wheelchair. Did I miss anything, Commander?" he asked looking over at S'reena.

S'reena rolled her eyes at Black. "Let's see.....uncontrollable first officer, cowboy CMO, disabled CEO," she counted off her fingers, "defecting CO...nope I think you've got it all." She smiled brightly at the cadet. "That first officer, by the way, would be me, and that cowboy would be him." She pointed at Black, just not jabbing him in the side.
She shifted uncomfortably, repositioning her daughter on her arm as she tried to reach for her tea. "Cadet, would you mind terribly holding her for a minute?"

"No I wouldn't mind at all," she said while reaching to take the baby from her hands, " what's her name?" S'reena gratefully handed Yarna to the young woman. "Her name is Yarna," she replied, "and she's almost a year old now. She's small for her age really, but she's very special. A little behind with talking too, but I'm sure she'll get beyond mommy and daddy soon." She watched the half-Klingon cadet cradle the toddler and smiled. "She seems to like you," she continued, when Yarna remained silent, "if she hadn't she'd be crying about now. My other daughter, Kahlan, is four years old, and she's currently with the chief engineer." She gazed sideways at Jason. "Thank you for your assistance," she said, then reached for her tea, "and it's good to have my hands free for a moment. With Michael on duty, and Kahlan with Noah, that leaves Yarna to me, and officially I'm not allowed back on duty, now am I?" She stiffled a yawn. "Sorry, I didn't get too much sleep last night. I still get sick even though we're in the fourth month now, and it generally pops up at night." She turned back to Soaringstar. "So, you wish to train in security. Any particular reason why? Tell us a little bit about yourself, why did you choose to join the academy, where are you from, etcetera. We really like to get to know the people we take under our wings."

"Well," she said, slightly uncomfortable about talking about herself, " I lived on Dorvan V all my life. Even though my mother and I were the only Klingons there everyone treated us as family. The thing I like to do the most is spar with the boys and, every now and then, we did sneak attacks on one another when we least expected it, to hone our reflexes and fighting skills." She chuckled softly at the memory, wishing they were with her now. "I suppose the reason I joined is to get away from my demanding parents," she said jokingly with laughter in her eyes, "No, it is because I love to explore and there is no better way to do that than on a starship. And the reason I want to be in security is that it is what I'm good at and probably the best way I could serve Starfleet." Looking at them with ginuine interest she asked, "What made you want to join Starfleet, Commander, or you Doctor?"

"Well, my story on that one starts when I was 10 years old. My 8-year-old sister was climbing a sizeable tree. She lost her grip, and fell 30 feet to the ground. She landed on a rock, breaking several ribs," Jason explained.
He fought back tears, swallowed and continued. "She was rushed to the hospital. They found that one rib went inward and punctured her lung. I watched her die on the biobed. From that point on, I devoted my life to making others better. I trained as a Medic when I was 18, then went into Medical School when I was 22. My brother suggested that Starfleet would be the most challenging to practice Medicine, so here I am."
He looked over at S'reena, though he didn't know why. "I've lost people due to rather unusual circumstances you only find out here, but I wouldn't trade it for anything."
He thought of what he had been through, and everything he'd gained, the people he met. Then he thought of Joan, and his head drooped a bit as he thought about her.
"Doctor?" Soaringstar asked noticing the change in his face.
Jason lifted his head. "Sorry, just thinking about my girlfriend, Commander Joan McCormick. She's our Chief Science Officer, tho she's temporarily serving on the other Academy vessel, the Hepta. I miss her quite a bit."

John had left his office heading for … well … he didn’t know. It was the first time on the Hanson and the ship was a bit unfamiliar to him; in fact he had never been on an Intrepid Class Starship. Stopping back by his quarters there as a message from the base that a shipment was waiting in one of the cargo bays. Cargo bays John thought, that star base must have hundreds of cargo bays. He wondered why the message didn’t say which one; but at any rate it was something to do while off duty.
Finding himself back on the Promenade, and because he was off duty, he wanted to see if there was a drink he could find that wasn’t sythohol. He had heard of a new place on base that was called Ronda on the Hill or Heather on the Mountain or something like that he chuckled and decided to find it. Walking up to a directory, he indeed found it. Being a new establishment it was a headliner on the directory; Heather on the Hill. Just around the next corner. That was good he thought … he had done enough walking today, not to mention a hover chair hit in the knee. As soon as he walked in, he saw that chair, with its occupant sitting. I wonder if I should just walk away he thought but … nah … what would be the fun in that.
Walking up behind a Cadet he heard her telling a story, about her life he guessed. That matched what he was feeling from her, happy thoughts, ones of joy. He heard her telling the part about getting away from demanding parents … and then asking Black and Hope why they joined Starfleet. John spoke up, “Well, it seems they joined to give people black eyes and the other to heal them.” The Cadet turn in her chair, John could suddenly perceive her thoughts change from reflective to protective. “Whoa Cadet, take it easy, I’m Commander John Graxen … the head Counselor on the Hanson. I’m sorry I startled you.” Looking at his new shipmates, both with smirks on their face John said, “Hello again you two,” looking around the new place, “huh … this is a nice place we have here. So, what do they specialize in I wonder.” Looking at S’reena now, “may I join you?”

"By all means," S'reena invited him, "if you can find a seat." With that, she returned her attention to the cadet. "Don't mind him too much," she smiled, "he got caught in an argument a few days ago, and was awared with a nice black eye."
She observed the young woman holding her daughter for a few seconds before continuing. "To be honest, I don't remember why exactly I joined. I would suppose to prove that Romulans deserve to be in Starfleet as much as anyone else. The first few times I applied I was refused, based on my background. Even though I am born on Earth," she said, her eyes losing the humoured spark they'd held earlier, "and it seems I proved them wrong. Up until joining the Hanson, my service record was clean. That is, the reprimand section. I'm still surprised I'm still in the service, for a few things they could easily have suspended me for life."
She paused again. "I'm a scientist by trade, and I joined Starfleet to be out here, explore the universe and meet new people. And meet new people I did, I met my husband on the Hanson, and in a few months our third child is due." She smiled again and leaned back in her chair. "If you're growing tired of holding her, do please say so. you're not required to hold on to her forever," she added, motioning at Yarna.

"Oh, I don't mind, just as long as she's quiet," she replied glancing at the baby and then at Commander Hope. She turned her chair slightly toward Commander Graxen and adjusted the baby. "So, Commander Graxen, what arguement did you get into to get a black eye? she asked with a mischievious grin spreading across her face. The few times that her parents argued it was more funny than anything else; sometimes her mother won (by throwing things) sometimes her father won, but they always came to a "fair" compromise. Remembering this she had an inward laugh.

"Well Cadet ... it was more like being in the wrong place at the wrong time; I wasn't even IN the argument." John responded back to the young Cadet.
"Talking about parents," John added, "I joined Starfleet to get away from my expected life; so-to-speak. You see I'm from Betazed and finished Engineering training because it was what was chosen for me and 'my' life. I guess I didn't see it that way. So, I left and joined Starfleet and became a Counselor and now have the Doctor title to go along with it ... funny ... I can adjust warp fields and fix EPS junctions and counsel all in the same day." John was smiling. "My parents think that I am wasting my Engineering training in Starfleet talking to people sitting on a couch."
OOC - LOA - I will not be around Sat, Oct 8th nor Sun. Oct 9th ... have a good week-end folks!

An empty bridge never felt right to Paul Drew, and right now he was having very mixed feelings about the emptyiness of the Hanson’s bridge. They were still waiting for all the Cadet’s to arrive at the Starbase, the result being that the Hanson was going to be in dry dock for a few days longer.
Most of the Hanson crew were still enjoying LOA on Conqueror; in fact it wouldn’t surprise Drew if most of them were spending the time in the various bars and cafes on the station.
“Admiral,” a young Ensign said, approaching Drew, “the latest status reports.”
The young man handed Drew a silver padd, containing details of the ship systems, the ship itself was now mission worthy, it just needed a mission to go on. Drew was about to sign the padd, when something caught his eye, when he came aboard he had instructed S’Reena to change the number of shifts on the Hanson to four, but according to this report the ship was still operating a three shift rotation.
Getting S’reena’s location from the computer, Drew left the Hanson bridge, padd in hand, ready to ask his new First Officer just what she thought she was doing.
<A bit of a shorty, S’reena will know how to carry this on, welcome to S-47 Cadet Soaringstar, I hope you have a wonderful time here with us in the Academy>

Calvin walked into the promenade on a mission. He was to report to the First Officer of the Hanson. He was also told about another cadet just like himself. Calvin had a PADD in hand with the picture of Commander S'reena. He knew she was here, unless the computer was malfunctioning.
Cadet Capps walked deeper into the room and looked around at all the tables. He looked to the right and left, but could not find who he was looking for. After a few moments and after he had twirled a few times he saw that there was a Klingon/Human sitting at a table with Cadets Pips on.
He walked over to the table where the cadet was sitting that was also joined by three other officers. As Calvin got closer he could see the ranks on their collars. That was when he knew he had found Commander S'reena.
"Hello, I am Cadet Calvin Capps. I am here to report in, and to meet the crew."

"Ah yes, we were expecting you," S'reena said, and motioned towards a vacant chair, "please, join us. I am Commander S'reena Hope. To my right you see Doctor Jason Black, and to my left you see Rear Admiral Paul Drew. Admiral Drew commands the USS Hanson, since ah...today actually."
She smiled as she waited for the newcomer to sit down. "So, cadet Capps, tell us a little bit about yourself. And if youve got questions for us, by all means fire away!"

Suddenly Joan decides she is thirsty, and wonders if she should head to the bakery. She changes her mind, and decides to enter the Heather, since she is right there. Entering she sees a small group in one corner, and wonders if she should join them, or go to a separate table for now. She starts to walk over to that table seeing a few new faces, and figuring any cadets around would actually be congregating near Commander Hope. One thing she couldn't figure out was why.
Just as she is only a row away, Joan finds someone has grabbed her arm. "Hey honey, how about another round for my friends." A large Angregan says, and she feels repulsed as the unsavory aroma coming from his direction hits her nostrils.
"Go and find your waitress, I don't work here, and even if I did, I wouldn't serve the likes of you. Now remove your hand before I have to make you regret your actions." She says not very happy about this, and she wonders what else could go wrong for her today.
"Well, you could use some manners, but lucky for you I am more thirsty than angry. Go your own way, and I will find someone to serve us. Sorry about the mix-up." He says letting go of her, and she continues on to the table as if she didn't have an encounter of the smelly kind.
"Hello, Commander Hope, I see you have good company around you, but I am wondering something. May I join your little party?" She says happy to see a face she knows.

Calvin Capps continued to stand as the Commander took the PADD away from him. She then initiated for him to take a seat with the rest of the officers around the table. He sat down in the closet chair to him.
Commander S'reena had introduced the rest of the officers around the table, and in respect Calvin quickly nodded his head and said hello to each individual.
"So, cadet Capps, tell us a little bit about you. And if you've got questions for us, by all means fire away!"
Calvin had to think of what exactly what he wanted to say. He wasn't the best person for social talk, but knew he needed to work on it. He was expecting to take all the effective communication classes he could.
Cadet Capps really did not like to talk about his past life, so he tried to aim all his conversation to the present or the future.
"Well, I come to Starfleet because I believe this is my fate. I postulate that everything I have done in the past has brought me here. I intend to do my best here and in the future to bring myself to the outcome that I am hoping for."
After Calvin finished talking he started to think that it sounded as if he was going into some sort of speech. He wondered if it was corny, or if the other officer thought he had no kind of social skills at all.
Luckily another officer at that time came up to the table. An officer with Commander Rank pips.

Hannah exited the shuttle and walked around the long corridor from the airlock to the promenade. She had had a long journey from Earth to the starbase conqueror and was staving. She strolled around the promenade looking at the many faces that passed her. It remaindered her of when she was 6 years old and her parents had taken her aboard a similar space station, all the different species fascinated her, she had asked tons and tons of questions about them.
She looked at all the different establishments trying to pick which to eat at. Then this Irish pub caught her eye. The Heather on the Hill, it was called. She entered and noticed a group of officers sat one of the tables. She walked over to them passing a group of large Angregans.
“Excuse me, I’m Cadet Hannah Stevenson, may I join you?” she asked the group.

S'reena listened with interest to Capps story, and felt that he wasn't telling them everything. ~can't blame him~ she thought ~I didn't either when I signed up~
"Got any hobbies?" she enquired, beckoning Joan to please join them. "I mean the Hanson crew often visits the holodecks when they are on leave, and generally cadets are invited along, as part of holodeck training, or just to have fun. Aboard the Hanson, we endeavour to make sure that cadets understand that a training mission isn't all about just being on a mission, but to get a feel of life aboard a ship also."
She gazes up at Joan, who appears to be a little haggard looking. "Are you all right commander?" she asks, sounding concerned, "you look as if you've been through hell and back."
However, before Joan can answer, another cadet walks up to them, formally announcing herself. "Welcome Cadet Stevenson," S'reena says, then beckons her to find a seat. "What position will you be training in Ms Stevenson?" she continues, "Cadet Capps just informs us he'll be training in operations, and Ms Soaringstar here will be training in security." She continues to give off another round of introductions again, where Jason Black, Paul Drew, Joan McCormick and both other cadets nod in turn as their names are announced.
<Capps, Hannah, Soaringstar, McCormick......oh and everyone else lol>

Joan pulls up a chair listening interested in what she heard, and then she smiles as she realizes there is an ops cadet. Joan chuckles when she hears Hope's question to her.
"I do believe that is putting it mildly. Besides I hear hell is a lot nicer than the brig, oh and I would know. I have been there more times than the earth has been around the sun, or at least it feels like it. What have you been up to?" She says listening to the commander until S'reena turns her attention to the new cadet. "So, Cadet Capps, why did you choose operations to study?" She turns to the cadet, interrested to learn more about him.

While keeping her attention to the three cadets, S'reena quietly answers Joan's question, turning a little pale around the nose at the memory. "I nearly got killed by Romulans," she whispers, "there was one who tortured me, and nearly killed me, and my child." She smiles weakly at Joan. "I am pregnant."
She turns her full attention back to the cadets, not really wanting to discuss the matter any further. The sooner she could forget it, the better, even though being in her hoverchair reminded her of it on a daily basis.
"you were saying, cadet?" she asks Capps.
