Joan sits in the Starburst alone drinking her drink. She looks up suddenly to see a man enter. She wishes he would come over and talk to her. He walks her way, but she thinks he is going to pass her by for another table. He takes her for surprise and sits down opposite of her. "I hope you don't mind, but I can't let you just sit here alone. It isn't right for a cadet to be alone here. There should be someone to show you around." He says smiling. "Thanks, but the admiral has already shown me the station. I am here to relax. That last encounter in the holodeck was something. I would like the company though. Just one thing, who are you?" She says. He chuckles. "Sorry, I suppose introductions are a must. The name is Black. Doctor Jason Black. Sorry I couldn't resist."He says smiling. "What do you mean? Was that a referrence for something?" She says. He looks shocked. "Where did you come from? Under a rock? It is in referrence to James Bond. It is how he introduces himself." He says before he takes a sip. "Actually, I came from an orphanage." She says. He looks like he wants to appologize. "Don't appologize. You couldn't have known." She says taking a sip.

Jason thought The Starburst would be a nice change. He had heard that the establishment had connections and offered certain Native American food and beverage that would interest him.
He noticed a young woman in a Cadet's uniform sitting alone. He had not seen her before, so he thought she must be new. But then, he had spent a considerable amount of his time in Conquerer's medical facilities. Just as he was about to pass by her table, he changed his mind and sat down.
"Still, I would feel better if I did. I should have thought before saying something like that. You see, I come from a large family, having 5 siblings. Because of my siblings' diverse interests and my parents' desire to make us well-rounded individuals, I was exposed to a wide variety of things."
And sat back for a moment, considering the woman opposite him.
"So, what brought you into Starfleet?"

"Well I was just turning sixteen, when the orphanage owner decided to surprise me. She said I could have anything for my birthday. I told her there was no offence to her establishment, and it wasn't anything she had done. I said I wanted to join Star Fleet. She helped me in every way possible. I needed a fresh start, and I felt this was the best way. Besides I can't get enough of those stars. I have always wanted to be out among them, and now I am. Enough about me though. What about you? Why did you join?" She says trying not to talk his ear off. It is an old habit, and she has yet to conquer it. "What is it like living in a big family?" She says before he has time to answer her. Knowing what she has done, she just smiles.

Jason chuckled slightly at the rapid-fire questions. He didn't mind the enthusiasm. He recognized it in himself.
"Actually the answers to those two questions aren't as seperate as you think. The two are intertwined. You see, I originally had 5 siblings. However, fifteen years ago, when I was 10 years old, my seven-year-old sister was playing in a tree. She feel from the tree, and landing on a small sharp boulder.
"I was there by her side when she died, half-blinded by tears. I decided then to devote my life to making other better. I become trained in First Aid, then became a Medic. When I was old enough, I entered Medical School. One of my older brothers, who is an Engineer, said that a Starship was challenging environment for any profession, particularly medicine. So, I joined Starfleet. So I guess you could say my family is the reason I joined Starfleet." He chuckled.
"As for living in a big family, I must say I was never felt lonely. There was always a sibling to spend time with. And as I said, the differing qualities of my siblings influenced my own."

She isn't surprised by his answer. She has always felt lonely as a child. "I am sorry about your sister. I had no idea. It must have been great though, living in a big family I mean. You had someone to care. Not to mention all of the family being around for birthdays and holidays." She says a little sad. She thinks she had better change the topic. "What kinds of things do you do for fun? I mean just you. I know there are several things for fun around here. The admiral showed and told me. It was fun being around her. I hope she and I can do that more often." She says a little more upbeat.

"Yes, Admiral McCormick can be quite an interesting person...as for my interests, none of them are something you do much on a starship or starbase, unless you're in a holodeck."
She looked at him curiously, so he continued.
"I prefer the outdoors. I like camping, hiking, and in particular dune buggies. As an explanation for that last one, I was born and raised in a desert-region of Earth. I love the sand and heat of Arizona. How about you?"

"We didn't go outside the orphanage. I have no idea what I like. I am still exploring my possiblities. So far I like holonovels. Unfortunately I am unexperienced in most things. By the way, what is a dune buggie? I have never heard of that before." She says looking intrigued. He seems nice.

Jason wasn't particularly surprised that she hadn't heard of a dune buggy before. Few people had, unless they came from a sandy region of earth.
"A dune buggy is a four-wheeled land vehicle. It's built low to the ground, and is equipped with strong shock-absorbers and high-tread tires. It's meant for driving around and over sand dunes in the desert."
Jason felt it was time to stop talking about himself so much.
"But enough about me. You mentioned holonovels. What kinds of programs have you tried?"

"I have only been in one. Admiral McCormick and I were visiting a horse ranch. It was a blast. I hadn't ridden a horse before. I would like to see what other kinds of programs they have." She says smiling. There is movement to her right. Someone just passed by their table. She turns to see who, but unfortunately she has missed them. She turns her attention back to the doctor. "I hear your vessel is the next out on a mission. What's that like? A mission I mean. I hear it is fast paced and exciting." She says taking another drink. She searches for topics to talk about. Unfortunately none come to mind. She has never really had any one to talk to before.

Jason took a sip of his drink before continuing.
"Yes, we are indeed scheduled to go out soon, although I don't know exactly when it will be. As for as fast-paced, yes; exciting is not always the word I would choose to describe. A couple missions ago we entered a nebula that made all but less-experienced crew disappear. Unfortunately that meant myself and a Cadet were left to run the Bridge and solve the problem. We discovered after a while that it was in fact alive, and was holding us there. We also found out that the disappeared crew had phase-shifted. And were all around us. We never determined why being chose to do that. I nearly collapsed by the time the problem was solved. One may describe that as exciting, but it was certainly nerve-wracking at the time."

"Wow, now that sounds like a really big challenge. At least you got through it though. This place is beautiful. I love the flora and fauna. Do you happen to know what kind of flower that is?" She says pointing at a spotted lilly.

Jason looked over at the flower she indicated. It was a large red spotted flower.
"Lilium lancifolium," he said, then turned back to her. "A tiger lily. Its grown in the region of Earth known as the Orient, particularly in China. Although most people cultivate it for its beauty, the Chinese value it because its bulb is edible."

"I like it. It is different from all the other flowers. It doesn't have to be beautiful. It is there for other reasons. Kind of like me. I am not here to be pretty. I am here to help out. I wonder if anyone has thought about a tiger lily like that." She says. He looks at her amazed. "What did I do now?" she says looking his way. "Nothing really. I hadn't thought of it like that before. I guess your right though. A tiger lily does have a use. Then again some do like it for a beautiful flower. It may not always know it is beautiful though." He says looking at the flower and then back at her. What is wrong with me? I shouldn't feel this way. He is an officer, but he is good looking too. She tries not to stare at him, but is a little unsuccessful. She manages to look away at the flowers again. She puts her hands on the table. She wants to start up the conversation, but she doesn't know what to say.

Just as Anderson was about to say something a female bajoran walks into the stardust and walks over to their table. "May I join you or am I interrupting something?" She asked with a playful gleam in her eyes.

Having just retuned from their mission, she and the good doctor walk down the corridor. He has decided to take her somewhere to celebrate, but she has no idea where. She smiles as they walk the corridor, and she remember the note.
"So, what about that note I sent you?" She says grateful that nobody tagged along with them.

Jason then remembered the message she had sent him. "Ah yes, that note. Sorry for not doing much about it at the time, but I was rather busy at the time getting ready for the Away Mission. Also, it wouldn't have been entirely appropriate then because I was one of your Instructors at the time."
He looked over at her, and for some reason he realized just now for the first time just how pretty she was. When she caught him staring, he quickly looked away.
"So, what exactly did you have in mind?" he asked as they continued to walk. He offered his arm to her.

A little nervous, she isn't sure what to say. She would like to try a relationship, but has never been in one before. She accepts his arm, and smiles.
"Well, I guess I meant what I said in the note. So, where are you taking me?" She says still smiling.

Joan seemed a little nervous, but Jason ignored that. She was a little young, and probably wasnt used to this.
"A holo-suite, if you don't mind. Since you've never been to Earth, theres a place there close to where I was born that I'd like to show you. Its called the Grand Canyon, and its the largest Canyon on Earth. Quite an impressive site."
They continued on, until they reached a holo-suite. He entered in the program, and they entered. It put them on the Rim on the canyon, giving them an excellent view of it.
He inhaled deeply, invigorated by the desert air. He turned to look at her. "So, what do you think?"

On: "Wow, this is gorgeous. Must be wonderful climbing up or down it. Is all of Earth this beautiful?" She says staring at the breath taking view.

"Yes, it is rather interesting getting up and done. We have a four-legged pack animal called a mule that we use to get up and down. It's like a horse if you've ever seen one of those."
He looked around again. "And yes, many parts of Earth are as beautiful or even more. Fortunately we've managed to recover the areas that were once destroyed by our industrial activities a couple hundred years ago. Would you like to explore the Canyon or would you like to see other parts of earth?"

"I don't know about the animals. I have never seen either, and know very little about them. Have you ever done any mountain climbing." She says her fingers itching. She smiles wickedly, and turns back to him.
"As for which I would like to do, is there time for the canyon and other parts of Earth?" She says excitedly.

"There most certainly is time for all of that. I've booked this holo-suite for about 3 hours figuring you'd be interested in other parts of earth. As for the animals, you sit on its back, which is horizontal, as it walks along. If you wish, you could ride and I'll lead it to make sure nothing goes wrong. Interested?"

"Not in the animals. Tell you what. You go down that way, and I will meet you somewhere you plan to stop. Good idea about the holo-suite time. You will have to pick the places though." She smiles with a plan, and is off before he can say anything.

Jason thought it rather odd that she just left. He was curious about she intended. He started walking along the edge of the canyon, glad to be back, even though it was just a hologram.
He missed the summers of walking along the canyon, spending hours with his older siblings exploring inside it, and his little sister before she died. He looked around and sighed, feeling nostalgia for home.

She moves to the edge, and flips herself on the side to start her climb down. She was so ready for this, and felt it too. The last time she climbed was too long ago, and she felt it too.
