(OOC: I had some time available at the library, and miss doing this)
Jason plopped himself down after a long day's work at the desk in his quarters, after adding his uniform jacket to the increasing clutter in the room. He started to pull up Selina's patient file again, hoping to gain some insight into this puzzling ailment, but stopped himself. He had been working for 18 hours straight...no, make that 19, he confirmed after checking a chronometer. A face of certain young Academy Instructor popped into his mind, as it did so often recently while he was working, and he tapped a button on the console. "Computer, begin audiovisual recording."
It beeped, and then he smiled. "Hello, Joan. I'm sorry it's been so long since I've contacted you. I've just been so busy with my work that I often come back to my quarters in the evening and collapse. The Institute's actual Chief Medical Officer is ready to throw a fit about how poorly I take care of myself. Doctors really do make the worst patients, huh? Anyway, you may be able to see behind me..." he moved to the side to give the recording a proper view of his quarters, "evidence of how poorly I'm maintaining myself outside of work. Don't tell your mother," he added quickly
He settled back in front of the camera, sighed, then continued. "My patients, or 'research subjects', as Starfleet Command is so found of calling them, dehumanizing in my opinion, require attention that is unpredictable and at all-hours, so the working shifts are near constant. I guess I didn't properly explain what I'm doing before I left. I'm involved in researching a currently incurable neurological syndrome, known as Orphi syndrome. I have personal motives as Orphi was a factor that led to my little sister's death. It's a neurological disorder that causes acute, split-second paralysis in various parts of the body. Usually its only an arm or a leg, but sometimes its both arms, or both legs, or sometimes one side or the other. At the time of my sister's death, it was only partially treatable, and the implant she had to control it malfunctioned at exactly the wrong moment. That hawk attacked her in the tree, and the side of her body she was using to hold onto the tree limb went dead, so down she went..." Jason's eyes had been tearing, and now a single tear went down his cheek.
"But anyway, enough about me. How's it going on Conquerer? Missing me horribly or are you too wrapped up in helping the Academy? I have one patient, Selina, that I swear looks almost exactly you, same age even, and working with her is unnerving sometimes because I can't help but thinking what it would be like to have you with this horrible ailment," he said, and shuddered. "No, I'm not going to think about that. Anyway, take care of yourself, my dear. I love you," he said, and brought up his hand, kissed the fingertips, and touched them to the screen. "Bye," he said, and ending the recording.
"Computer, encode recording for transmission and send it by subspace to Commander Joan McCormick, Starbase Conquerer, Sellah sector."

OOC: I don't know Gary, but don't. He and I had a thread going and I do believe many people we reading. Oh well, life on a starbase, everyone reads everything lol.....
IC:
Joan was busy walking to her new hangout, when one of her padds beeped. She didn't expect anything today, and found a nice little surprise, a message from Jason. She gulped when the reality of who the message was from set in. She headed for the Black Hole any ways, and sat down at her favorite table. She ordered, and then hit play for the message.
She was touched by what he had said about his sister. She wasn't sure how she was going to tell him, but she knew she must. Things had changed for her, and she liked what had happened. She sighed, and waited for her drink, it didn't take long for it to arrive. She started to think of what to say to him, and wanted to wait until she was alone before she broke the news to him. She drank her drink and didn't stay long. She left a message with one of the waitresses for Tom, and headed to her quarters to come up with some kind of reply.
Once inside, she got a little relaxed, and sat down in front of her computer. She told the computer to record.
"Jay, I didn't expect a message from you, but am delighted you thought of me. It is wonderful to hear you are working on curing a disease. It is awful having them, and I don't know what I would have done if there wasn't a doc looking for a cure. Work around here has been good, but not too harsh that I would forget about you," she said, and then took a sip of her drink. She didn't know how to tell him, or how to even get to this at all.
"Jay, things have changed around her, not that that is a bad thing. I.... um.... have changed, and have.... found.... someone else," she said hoping this wouldn't hurt him. She figured when he left that she had lost him. She had had a hard time moving in any direction because he left.
"I am sure there is someone out there for you, but it isn't me. I am sorry if this hurts you, that is the last thing I want to do. Can we just be friends?" She said, and knew this sounded harsh. She had the computer end and send it.

OOC: Why in blazes do I feel guilty about reading someone elses mail? Yeah, no worries about reading that, Gary. As Joan said, we had quite the audience for our romance threads by the time I resigned. We had quite the following. Not that there'll be anything to follow in the future, thanks to Joan breaking Jason's heart . Kidding

Well, poor Jason will just have to get over it. Oh and who knows what might happen in Joan's future.... just not Jason. What you expected her to sit and wait for Jason? I figured he wasn't coming back to her, and a long distance relationship doesn't work very well. She had a hard time with it, but then moved on. How are things going for you Dan?

(OOC: Going splendidly. I've lost about 10 pounds so I'm down to 165, I have a significant farmer's tan, and the sun is slowly bleaching my hair blonde. Getting warmer here, and I may have to start using sunscreen to keep from burning.)
Jason was hunched over slightly in a stool, hovering over Selina. She was asleep, but the bio-readings suggested that she was having brief moments of paralysis every few minutes on different limbs. He was testing the performance of a promising new treatment, when the door to the Med Lab opened. He squinted in the bright light, as he had had the room dimmed as to not disturb Selina.
Entering was Doctor Carmichael, the Institute's CMO. After Jason could see properly, he recognized her, and said, "Oh, hi Elissa," then turned back to Selina
"Doctor Black," Carmichael said with a concerned tone, "how long has it been since you slept?"
"Umm, its been..." he faltered, unsure of the time. "Computer, what time is it?"
"0539 hours," was the monotone female reply.
"About 39 hours I believe," Jason then said, after a moment's thought. "I think I'm making progress with Selina and this new treatment."
"You're not going to make any proper progress if your mind is impaired from lack of sleep. Look at yourself!" She turned a mirror toward him. His eyes were a bit gaunt, and he was horribly unshaven. "I order you to get some sleep," she said, actually taking away the equipment around him.
"Alright, alright," he said, standing up. He was a bit stiff, having hunched over for so long.
"Your file said you were a bit reckless when it came to your own well-being, but I never expected this," she said.
"Yes," Jason said nodding, "Back at the Academy, my Assistant CMO made frequent reports to the Captain about concerns over my health. But anyway, good night, Doctor," he said, lumbering out of the Med Lab.
He walked bleary-eyed down the rather vacant corridors to his quarters. As he passed his desk, he noticed a message was waited. He hit play as he dropped into his chair. His heart sank as he watched.
When it was over, although very hesistant, he hit record. "Joan...." he started, "Well, first off, forgive the appearance. The CMO just ordered me to get some sleep after working 39 hours straight. Though I must say that that's nothing compared to your message. I can understand. I did notice that there were alot of guys on the Starbase eyeing you before I left, particularly when word of my departure got around. I've just glad that your young heart wasn't wounded by my leaving. I'm happy for you, in a way. But I'm not 100% sure on the friends thing. Only time will tell that," he said, and sent the mesage.
After showering and shaving, during which the image of Joan asking "Can we just be friends?" running through his mind unendingly, he headed to the Galley, suddenly realizing that he was starving.
After getting of a heaping dish of he-didnt-care-what-he-was-so-hungry, he sat down at the nearest empty table. As he started to dig in, Nedra, one of the other researchers, came and sat down. "I heard that Carmichael ordered you off-duty. That true?" Jason nodded. "But a day and a half of straight work isn't what's weighing on your mind right now, is it?" she asked.
Betazoids. Not so good to be around when you didn't want to talk about it. "I just got a Dear John letter from Joan."
"Ah," she said, nodding. "And as I recall, for humans that means she broke up with you?" He nodded in reply. "Oh, Jason, I'm sorry."

Joan had just gotten ready for bed, and she heard the computer beep. ~Who could that be?~ She thought.
~You won't know until you answer it.~ Leena said kinda teasing. Joan sighed, and moved to the computer to see who was calling at this hour. She put on her robe when she saw it was Jason. She heard his message, and was a little worried. She told the computer to record.
"I was scared out of my socks when I saw you at first, talk about an apperance, gosh," she said teasing him hoping to get the friendship off to a good start.
"I hope all is going well with your work. As for the friendly gentlemen here on the base, I think they are more scared of my mom than interested in me. There is one, but he isn't an officer, so I think this might work. Who knows though? I am sure there is someone out there for you," she said trying to be helpful for once. She had the computer send the message.

OOC: No worries Gary, I am sure there are several people reading this. Some remember our previous thread together, and probably want to see what is next for this couple. I still can't believe the number of FANS we have, huh Jason? LOL

Yeah, really. But then, I think we are unique in s47 in that we were the only couple to have a real-life relationship reflect a s47 relationship (right down to it ending because I relocated).
And don't worry Gary. If we really wanted this to be private (and what's the fun in that), we would have PM'ed these to each other. You'll notice that it's not just the messages themselves in these posts. It's also the surrounding situation. I didn't want to leave everyone hanging, what Jason's doing all this time.

Jason looked at the clock in the lab. He was pushing 15 straight hours of being on duty. Selina was regressing, for reasons Jason couldn't understand. But then, that wasn't saying much, as they understood little about what Jason was starting to call the "nervous system gremlin".
The door opened again. From the vague reflection in one of the consoles, Jason recognized Elissa Carmichael. "Doctor Black, how long have you been on duty?"
Jason looked again. "Fifteen hours, two minutes."
"You know that I've restricted you down to a maximum of twelve hours of duty," she said, crossing her arms.
Jason spun his chair. "Elissa...the human body is a masterful machine, capable of withstanding great amounts of stress and long periods of activity. I am fine," he said, turning back to Selina's reading, though he wasn't sure what he was looking for.
"Doctors..." she said, shaking her head, "they know how to keep a patient well, but at the same time they know just how far their bodies will allow them. Leave the lab before I have Security remove you, or have Dr. Allgaer restrict your duties for your own good."
"Alright, alright. Loud and clear. Last thing I need is not to be allowed to attend to Selina when I need to," he said, and stood. "I'll go now."
He went back to his quarters, and found yet another message from Joan. He viewed it, then was about to press the Record button, when he looked at himself in the mirror. And he decided it best to shave and comb his hair. After that, he sat down and hit Record.
"Hello Joan. Again, sorry about the appearance last time. I decided to make myself presentable for this one. Yeah, being the Admiral's daughter does scare away the more sensable ones. But then, it can be an enticement for the foolish or more daring," he said winking. "You decide where I fit in there. Not an officer, huh? What's he do? As for me...well, I dunno. Though there is this one researcher, Nedra Dube. A betazoid. I think there might be something there, but I'm not sure."

Joan had a hard day with the drill, and then was chewed out a little about not warning some people about it. She sighed as she sent off the report, then she noticed she had a new message from Jay. She smiled, and listened to it, chuckling when he appolgized about his apperance last message. She started a message.
"Don't worry about how you looked that one time, we all do weird things like that. At least you weren't like my mom was, in flannel pjs. Now that was embarrasing, I was at my station when I opened her message too," she said and chuckled shaking her head.
"Good times, good time. Tom, that's the nonofficer's name, runs a place on the promenade called the Black Hole. Very cool place, but mom doesn't like me being there, oh well. Yeah it is a bonus when they are sensible and audacious. I would put you near the foolish category, maybe," Joan said and winked.
"I hope things are going good with your research. It good to hear you might have a new love interest. What's her name? Well I need to go, so many reports to read and process, the night is young," she said, and sent the message.
