Cadet Tovan arrived in his quarters, where he would await assignment to his first vessel. Noting the cramped size and lack of distracting furniture, he reasoned that it would be an excellent place for meditation. He just hoped that station operations had been notified to deactivate the fire supression systems in his quarters. He didn't need another incident like the one on the transport... He placed his bag on the bed, as he knew it would be illogical to unpack. Considering that he required several hours before he needed to meditate, he decided to walk the station to become better acquainted with his surroundings. He stepped out the door, and began to walk...

Crystal might not hang out with the other officers much, but she generally preferred solitude. Even so, she still desired some human interaction, and it was that desire that led her to be walking the promenade, her head down. The promenade had a few problems that led her to generally doing anything on the promenade besides walking from place to place. The largest problem of the promenade was, of course, the windows.
Crystal was walking from the dock, where she had made sure the Hanson was safe and home, to wherever she happened to end up, probably eventually some restaurant. Making sure her eyes went every way except toward the windows was occasionally difficult, but it let her see the people she passed much better.
She had paused to examine a restaurant, one Heather on the Hill. She didn't know if she was quite in the mood for that kind of atmosphere at the moment, but she did think it might be worth checking out at some other point. As she turned away from the menu a cadet had to sidestep quickly to avoid having her collide into him. “I'm very sorry,” Crystal apologized. She noticed that he was in cadet's uniform, and, being an academy instructor, decided to introduce herself. “Welcome to Starbase Conqueror, by the way. I'm Commander Crystal Shinsei, Navigation Instructor on the Hanson.”

Tovan wandered the corridors, first stopping by the Hanson's mooring to get a look at would may be his new ship. It seemed to be satisfactory. The next logical course of action, he reasoned, would be to inspect the promenade, so that he would know where he may acquire any items he may require. He headed off in that direction.
As he walked by various shops and restauraunts, he watched the multitude of other species passing them by. Many of them were human, which, he knew, were some of the most emotional and illogical beings a Vulcan could encounter. He would simply have to rely on his training to get him through this. As he was passing by a small restaurant, Heather on the Hill, a woman who had been looking at a menu suddenly turned into his path. He had to sidestep quite quickly to avoid her.
"I'm very sorry," she apologized. Appearing to notice his cadet's uniform, she introduced herself. "Welcome to Starbase Conqueror, by the way. I'm Commander Crystal Shinsei, Navigation Instructor on the Hanson."
Recognizing the Hanson as his likely assignment, Tovan replied, "Greetings, Commander Shinsei. I am Tovan. It is likely I will be posted to the Hanson, so I believe I will be serving under your tutelage. I look forward to learning from your experience."

Crystal tilted her head slightly, glancing over the cadet more carefully now that she knew he was to be her student. “I look forward to teaching you.” The cadet was Vulcan, nothing terribly surprising in that. For all the emotion prevalent on Starfleet ships, they still seemed to have an illogically high number of Vulcans.
Crystal couldn't tell much about the cadet now, but she also suspected he couldn't tell a ton about each other. But if they were going to be working together, maybe she should try to fix that some. “Did you move into your quarters and see the Hanson already?” Crystal asked. OK, maybe as getting to know you questions went that one wasn't very good. But it would let her know whether Tovan had something he had to do or whether he was more-or-less consigned to wandering the station.

Initially, Tovan felt no need to engage in conversation, but, as he thought about it, he realized that it would proabably be a good idea to get to know his instructor a little better, so as to form a better working relationship. He knew that many humans were uncomfortable around Vulcans, and that that could impact effciency. Getting to know those humans would go a ways towards alleviating that tension.
"Yes," he replied to the commander, "I have moved into my quarters, and also seen the Hanson. She seems like an excellent ship. However, I was thinking of getting something to eat, perhaps you could point me in the direction of suitable facility?"

Crystal wasn't quite sure what to answer. Jayli's Nest sounded interesting, but its location disqualified it, at least for Crystal. She was aware that most people didn't quite share her...feelings about space. But since she hadn't ever been there, nor ever would, she couldn't exactly recommend it. On the other hand the only other restaurant without an overly social atmosphere that sprang to Crystal's mind was the Asian Garden Restaurant. The problem with it was that it was far too upscale. Crystal realized she still hadn't answered the question, and that she should probably have an answer. After all, whenever the Hanson was docked she checked out a few new restaurants. She was absolutely horrible at cooking, so it had seemed to be to her advantage to find a good restaurant.
“There's a vegetarian restaurant: Zor Fiss” Crystal said, making her decision. “I don't know what language the name is in.” Crystal realized that Tovan probably didn't care in the slightest. But Crystal had tried to look it up, unsuccessfully. For a while she had thought it might be Trill, but it wasn't. “On deck 23, section 28. They make quite a few good dishes, from a variety of cultures.”
Crystal wasn't sure if Tovan wanted to eat with her or not. Her guess would be no, given the phrasing he had used, but she didn't just want to abandon him on an unfamiliar base in case that wasn't what he meant. She supposed she could just ask. “Do you want to eat on your own, or can I join you? Feel free to tell me no, I won't be offended.” She smiled warmly, adding to her final statement.

The question was unexpected to Tovan, but, upon further consideration, he remembered that his logical manner often seemed stand-offish in an emotional context. He found the commander's directness to be very refreshing. So many humans never said what they meant. The universe would be a much more efficient place if everybeing just spoke outright, he thought. The vegetarian restauraunt sounded appropriate.
"It would be agreeable if you joined me. I have found that crewmates sharing meals lessens pre-mission tension, and overall makes promotes efficieny. If you will lead the way, Commander."

“Great,” Crystal replied. She understood what Tovan was saying, though she thought there had to be more direct ways to say it. Maybe the phrasing was a by-product of the logic. But Crystal really didn't know that many Vulcans. She knew one of the senior staff was Vulcan, but neither of them really socialized outside of official academy gatherings. And before....though Vulcans had been in about the same position as Terrans most of the Vulcans who tried to actively resist weren't all logical. Oh well. It was actually a good thing to know she didn't know something about everything.
“So, what made you want to join Starfleet?” Crystal asked, as they neared the restaurant.

"It seemed the most logical course of action," Tovan replied.
"My skills tend toward navigation and piloting. A planetary location doesn't have many oppurtunities for someone with these skills to contribute. After careful consideration, I decided that Starfleet would be the best way to put my skills to use to serve the greater good."
